INTRODUCTION In the year 2014 – 2015, the consolidated results record a net surplus of £108,043 before depreciation and transfers, a decrease of £675,291 on the previous year. In last year’s survey I had predicted that this year would be more challenging, so the outcome was not unexpected. The current year will restore the balance. Three main factors contributed to this decrease. The first and greatest was a drop in retained box office income; some, although not all, of this was due to the sales and expenditure of the visiting Wagnerian operas from Freiburg in June 2014, but there were also some disappointing sales generated elsewhere as well, although some of the impact was mitigated by the excellent results from the pantomime. Secondly we missed the income from David Cholmondeley’s exhibition HOUGHTON REVISITED that had been fruitful for us in 2013, and finally in the year in question we spent £132,000 on account of total fee costs for STAGE TWO, our new education and training centre. The year got off to a cracking start with the return of CATS, which played to 99% of its financial capacity over the first fortnight in April. Though there was some concern that this 35-year old production might show its age, our audiences appreciated it as much as if it had been newly produced. Britten Sinfonia’s brilliant ST JOHN’S PASSION followed a fortnight later, preceding the radio antidote to panel games I’M SORRY I HAVEN’T A CLUE, proving once more that the Theatre Royal’s ambition to present a wide range of entertainment isn’t just lip service. Artistically and financially the greatest risk this quarter was THE TWO WORLDS OF CHARLIE F, a dramatized exploration of the lives of veterans who had lost limbs in the UK’s various and current foreign wars. It was a powerful reminder of the price we ask our soldiers to pay, and though it did not hit its financial target it was a production we were proud to have hosted. In May the Norfolk and Norwich Festival brought its smorgasbord of high quality international work to the Theatre Royal. The highlights were Madeleine Peyroux and Hugh Masekela, and it was a privilege to be the temporary home of Michael Clark. In June we brought Chichester Festival Theatre’s wonderful production of SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN to our stage, complete with 15,000 litres of water and ponchos for the first few rows of the audience. The second quarter included the Theatre Royal’s biggest risk to date when we hosted Theater Freiburg’s productions of PARSIFAL and TANNHAUSER, a demonstration of our belief that the cultural ties that bind us to our continental friends are greater and longer lasting than the political ones that separate us, and which had led to the world war whose outbreak we were commemorating. A week later we produced our own commemoration, when Sir John Hurt led a company of young actors from schools across Norfolk in TO END ALL WARS, a dramatic and musical realisation of the lives of six Norfolk individuals who were alive in 1914.
3
By way of contrast, August brought the Nimmo Twins to the Theatre Royal main stage for two performances of their locally aimed revue show that sold out months in advance, and which proved that their humour moves smoothly from the smaller stage at the Playhouse. And September‘s offering, WEST SIDE STORY, played to 99% houses for a production that once again proved the brilliance on every front of the Sondheim/Bernstein/Laurents musical. The autumn quarter is traditionally the busiest, the most ambitious and the most heavyweight, and 2014 was no exception. The Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of both parts of HENRY IV, the visit of Glyndebourne, the National Theatre’s ONE MAN TWO GUV’NORS, balanced by Al Murray, Alan Davies, THE FULL MONTY, Ross Noble, Northern Ballet’s CINDERELLA, Britten Sinfonia’s KALEIDOSCOPES and JEEVES AND WOOSTER from the West End – these were all welcome, high quality and successful. But the absolute highlight of the quarter was Matthew Bourne’s version, using young local male dancers, of LORD OF THE FLIES. It had been a considerable risk to commit ourselves to this production over a year in advance, before we knew much about its ambitions or had identified whether there was enough local talent, but in the event our collaboration with The Garage, and particularly our reliance on our ambassadors for the production, meant that it was solidly supported, brilliantly performed and gratifyingly popular. Together with TO END ALL WARS and the Norfolk Schools Project performance in November, LORD OF THE FLIES constituted a busy period for our powerful education team, who met the various challenges with energy to spare. They will have deserved STAGE TWO where their vision can find fuller expression than is possible within the confines of the Theatre Royal. Our pantomime, once again led by the indefatigable Richard Gauntlett, was of extremely high quality and gave huge pleasure, not least at the box office, where it was the highest grossing Christmas show in the Theatre Royal’s history and only failed by £4,000 to hit £1 million in sales. Highlights of the fourth quarter were the return of Matthew Bourne’s EDWARD SCISSORHANDS and Headlong’s production of THE ABSENCE OF WAR, David Hare’s great – and timely, given the imminent General Election - play about the Labour Party. We were gratified by the immediate success of SING-A-LONG-A FROZEN, which brought a younger audience to the Theatre Royal than usual. After the financial successes of previous years the relative drop in surplus was a good reminder of how fragile the business of theatre is. We deal in ‘theatrical futures’ – committing ourselves many months in advance to hundreds of thousands of pounds of risk in the belief, backed by our expertise and supported by our Trustees, that tickets will be bought in sufficient quantities.
4
That we have been proved right so often over the years is a tribute to the remarkable abilities of our programming and marketing personnel, every department that deals with our audiences and the incoming companies, and every one of my colleagues throughout the Theatre Royal and the Playhouse. To all of them, and to the Trustees who give so generously of their time and expertise, thanks are due.
Peter Wilson MBE DL Chief Executive November 2015

OVERALL ECONOMIC IMPACT – 2014/2015 The Theatre Royal contributes to the value of the local economy in two ways: direct and indirect. Its direct impact is made up of its own spending locally: for example, the amount spent on purchasing supplies locally, or the amount spent on resident staff wages which is then spent on housing, food, clothes etc. locally. The indirect impact takes into account the ‘knock-on’ effect which is generated by the direct impact, where money spent results in more money being spent: for example, the purchase of supplies from a local company results in that company spending on their staff wages, other supplies they purchase etc. All that expenditure builds up in the local economy, helping to preserve and create jobs, and grow the economy. The following formula is used by the Arts Councils of England, Wales & Northern Ireland, and Creative Scotland to calculate a theatre’s economic impact and was used in the first UK-wide study of the economic impact of theatres, finding that this impact in 2002/03 exceeded £2.6 billion. The formula used to calculate economic impact is: Economic impact = [1. Turnover + 2. Overseas earnings + 3. Additional visitor spend + 4. Salaries + 5. Subsistence allowances + 6. Supplies purchased locally] x 1.5 (to take into account the knock-on effect in the local economy) 1. For 2014/15, the Theatre Royal’s turnover was £12,777,874 2. There were no overseas earnings in the year. 3. Additional visitor spend is the money spent by people attending the theatre to see a performance, over and above any money spent on tickets or in the theatre itself, and covers travel, accommodation (if visiting the area specifically to go to the theatre), domestic costs (e.g. babysitter) and any food and drink purchased outside the home. For 2014/15, the amounts were as follows: Travel Accommodation Domestic costs Food & drink
£561,389 £123,892 £85,176 £2,183,610
Sub-total £2,954,067
4. £1,516,408 was spent on locally resident staff wages during the year. 5. Subsistence allowances are paid to all performers and support staff visiting the Theatre Royal with each production, to cover the cost of travel, accommodation, food and other living expenses. In the year 2014/15, over 1,600 performers and support staff visited the theatre, making up over 9,300 overnight stays. At a very conservative estimate of only £25 per head per overnight stay, this represents £233,775 of expenditure. 6. Supplies purchased locally totalled £1,446,658 So the total impact of Norwich Theatre Royal on the local economy for 2014/15 was £28,393,173, a decrease of 2.3% on the previous year (£29,071,038)
