2
INTRODUCTION The year 2015 – 2016 was notable for the Trustees’ authorisation of STAGE TWO, the Theatre Royal’s learning and participation centre. The decision involved allocating costs of £111,354 that had already been incurred from revenue to capital. The audited annual accounts for the previous year therefore show a net surplus of £219,397 rather than the £108,043 that were reported in the 2014 - 2015 (pre-audit) Economic Impact Survey. In the year 2015 – 2016 the Theatre Royal sold 401,153 tickets to 445 performances on its main stage & studio, at an average price paid of £20.03. We sold tickets to the value of £9,563,034 and retained £2,492,788 an average retention of 26%. Inside this Survey you’ll find more detailed analyses of trends, provenance and allocation. The consolidated results record a net surplus of £572,410, an increase of £353,013 from the audited figure. We had anticipated and predicted this increase, so though it was welcome it was not unexpected. It has not altered our resolve to present a balanced programme that has broad appeal, as well as to invest in our environmental, educational, and community work, as well as ongoing improvements in access, comfort and safety. Once again the first quarter hit the ground running, with the return of TOP HAT. This proved as popular as in its first appearance three years ago, and was followed by THE GREAT GATSBY, Northern Ballet’s version of Scott Fitzgerald’s great novel. BRUCE FORSYTH put in an appearance before the Norfolk and Norwich Festival’s welcome annual residence at the Theatre Royal for a week in May, which itself was followed by the first (of two this year) visits to Norwich by KEN DODD. Those lucky enough to see Dodd know they were in the presence of a representative of an older era, one that may never be replicated. It was a privilege to host him. The second quarter is always the trickiest, covering as it does the summer months when the temptations of the beach, the river, the garden, the barbecue and the late evening sunshine offer so many alternatives to an evening in the theatre. Luckily we had planned a trio of blockbuster musicals (JERSEY BOYS, DIRTY DANCING and ANNIE) to occupy much of June and July, and had interspersed the National Theatre’s breathtaking production of THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT TIME, an international hit from the moment it was produced in the Cottesloe Theatre in 2008, and Kneehigh’s interesting version of Daphne du Maurier’s REBECCA. Between them these productions ensured that we reached the safer ground of October in good shape. (We started selling tickets for THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT TIME over a year in advance, and sold out every performance as a result. In the old days of books of tickets stubs this wouldn’t have been so easy. This is one of the unexpected consequences of computerised box offices.) In August David Lambert, our doughty Director of the Arts Courses, brought us his imaginative and well-populated version of PETER PAN RETURNS TO NEVERLAND, as always written, directed and produced by him. This annual production by the Youth Company is always a joy, especially as it brings so many young people onto our stage and through our doors. 3
The first of the autumn musicals – DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS and JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR - were disappointing at the box office though terrific on stage, as was the play HANDBAGGED, Moira Buffini’s entertaining and thoughtful view of the relationship between Mrs Thatcher (brilliantly played by Kate Fahy) and Queen Elizabeth. THE LAST TANGO and AN INSPECTOR CALLS delivered good returns and were much admired. But the standout external success of the third quarter was Northern Ballet’s NUTCRACKER, which soared above all previous visits in terms of both quality and appeal. Our relationship with Northern Ballet is a precious one, balancing as it does the other companies who bring dance and ballet throughout the year. Northern Ballet remains a cornerstone of our programming. We’d been bracing ourselves for an excellent pantomime season with Richard Gauntlett’s return to play Dame in his own SNOW WHITE, but were completely unprepared for the brilliance of the conception of the dwarves as puppets, created by the excellent Norwich Puppet Theatre and manipulated by our own dancing ensemble, who for once were able to expand their talents beyond appearing as Villagers, Townspeople and various choruses. They rose to the challenge with flair and imagination, and the collaboration with the Puppet Theatre was a pleasure throughout. Norfolk and Norwich Operatic Society’s version of SUNSET BOULEVARD was January’s highlight, followed in February by the touring version of PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT, in which Simon Green as Bernadette displayed a delicacy and grace that lifted the show quite beautifully. Both shows attracted good audiences and maintained high standards. Matthew Kelly and Robert Powell starred in, respectively, TOAST and CHARLES III, in March. We were pleased to have high-definition plays and stars on our stage, especially as they bookended the newly ennobled Sir Matthew Bourne’s brilliant SLEEPING BEAUTY, here on an extremely welcome return visit. Matthew’s a favourite in Norwich, which since 1996 has hosted every one of his great productions. Long may it – and he - last. The year rounded off with HAIRSPRAY, which once again proved that there’s nothing like a feelgood musical to make you feel good. I wrote last year that the relatively poor results from 2014 – 2015 were a useful reminder of the fragility of theatre business, and I make no apology for repeating that warning. The Theatre Royal – largely unsubsidised - risks many hundreds of thousands of pounds many months in advance on the assumption, and in the hope, that Norfolk audiences will appreciate the banquet that will be laid out. The occasional disappointment doesn’t negate the frequent triumphs, of which I hope there will over the years be many more. Peter Wilson

OVERALL ECONOMIC IMPACT – 2015/2016 The Theatre Royal contributes to the value of the local economy in two ways: direct and indirect. Its direct impact is made up of its own spending locally: for example, the amount spent on purchasing supplies locally, or the amount spent on resident staff wages which is then spent on housing, food, clothes etc. locally. The indirect impact takes into account the ‘knock-on’ effect which is generated by the direct impact, where money spent results in more money being spent: for example, the purchase of supplies from a local company results in that company spending on their staff wages, other supplies they purchase etc. All that expenditure builds up in the local economy, helping to preserve and create jobs, and grow the economy. The following formula is used by the Arts Councils of England, Wales & Northern Ireland, and Creative Scotland to calculate a theatre’s economic impact and was used in the first UK-wide study of the economic impact of theatres, finding that this impact in 2002/03 exceeded £2.6 billion. The formula used to calculate economic impact is: Economic impact = [1. Turnover + 2. Overseas earnings + 3. Additional visitor spend + 4. Salaries + 5. Subsistence allowances + 6. Supplies purchased locally] x 1.5 (to take into account the knock-on effect in the local economy) 1. For 2015/16, the Theatre Royal’s turnover was £14,981,356 2. There were no overseas earnings in the year. 3. Additional visitor spend is the money spent by people attending the theatre to see a performance, over and above any money spent on tickets or in the theatre itself, and covers travel, accommodation (if visiting the area specifically to go to the theatre), domestic costs (e.g. babysitter) and any food and drink purchased outside the home. For 2015/16, the amounts were as follows: Travel Accommodation Domestic costs Food & drink
£593,706 £140,404 £100,288 £2,302,618
Sub-total £3,137,016
4. £1,617,586 was spent on locally resident staff wages during the year. 5. Subsistence allowances are paid to all performers and support staff, visiting the Theatre Royal with each production, to cover the cost of travel, accommodation, food and other living expenses. In the year 2015/16, nearly 1,700 performers and support staff visited the theatre, making up over 9,400 overnight stays. At a very conservative estimate of only £25 per head per overnight stay, this represents £235,050 of expenditure. 6. Supplies purchased locally totalled £2,594,449 So the total impact of Norwich Theatre Royal on the local economy for 2015/16 was £33,848,185, an increase of 19% on the previous year (£28,393,173)
