Welcome to the Theatre Royal Welcome to our new season at Norwich Theatre Royal. Since I came to Norwich at the beginning of the year, lots of people have asked me about my vision for our artistic programme over the coming years. My response is always a straightforward one: there won’t be a revolution, but look out for some evolution. We will continue to bring the very best work across the broadest spectrum of the performing arts to our stages but you will also see some artists, companies and productions that are new to Norwich. I think that this season is a great example of that commitment. I know how much excitement and enjoyment our musicals programme brings to our audiences and we have an incredible lineup to enjoy from the award-winning Jersey Boys to the heart-wrenching Miss Saigon and, of course, one of the most eagerly anticipated new musicals, The Band, featuring the music of Take That.

comedians including Jimmy Carr, Sarah Millican, David Baddiel and a very welcome return to the Theatre Royal for Norfolk’s own Nimmo Twins. If that wasn’t enough, this autumn In Stage Two we are delighted to launch Creative Matters, our new series of month-long seasons of performances, installations, activities and events focusing on issues which directly affect people of all ages and backgrounds. We hope that, as always, there will be something for everyone to enjoy. Stephen Crocker Chief Executive

We also have two fantastic dramas in The Kite Runner and This House and both shows come to us following hugely successful runs in the West End. In dance, you can look forward to the smash-hit Tap Factory and the returns of our partners Richard Alston Dance Company and New Adventures, with Matthew Bourne’s wonderful Cinderella. Finally, as we head towards the winter months we’ve also made sure that there is plenty to make you laugh out loud with shows from some of the country’s favourite

Tuesday 19 - Saturday 23 September The legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences. Few musicals have received such acclaim as the multi-award-winning Blood Brothers. Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. LYN PAUL returns to the iconic role she has played many times in the West End. Lyn rose to fame as a member of the pop group New Seekers whose numerous number one hits include I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing. It has been christened the ‘Standing Ovation Musical’, as it “brings the audience cheering to its feet and roaring its approval” (The Daily Mail). ‘ONE OF THE FUNNIEST SHOWS… COMEDY GOLD’ THE TIMES

Monday 27 November - Saturday 2 December Following its critically acclaimed West End revival at the Haymarket, Alan Ayckbourn’s hilarious tale of matrimonial mishaps, and London’s funniest comedy of 2016, embarks on a national tour. Bob and Fiona clumsily try to cover up their affair but their spouses’ intervention only adds to the confusion. William and Mary Featherstone become stuck in the middle, falsely accused of adultery, with no idea as to how they’ve become involved. The plot culminates in two disastrous dinner parties on successive nights, shown at the same time, Friends & Corporate Club: Half price first night after which the future of all three couples seems in jeopardy… The star cast includes leading stage and TV actor ROBERT DAWS, (The Royal, Outside Edge and Roger Roger) opposite CAROLINE LANGRISHE (Lovejoy, Holby City and Judge John Deed). Joining them is MATTHEW COTTLE (BAFTA-nominated Game On and who transfers from the West End), SARA CROWE, (West End: Absurd Person Singular and The Constant Wife, and on screen in the film Four Weddings and a Funeral), CHARLIE BROOKS (everyone’s favourite villain as Janine Butcher in EastEnders), and LEON OCKENDEN (currently Will in Coronation Street).

TOP Hat

THE MUSICAL

MUSIC & LYRICS

BASED ON

BY IRVING BERLIN

RKO’S MOTION PICTURE BOOK BY

MATTHEW WHITE & HOWARD JACQUES

Friday 2 - Saturday 3 February Richard Alston Dance Company is an avidly followed UK dance company with some of the world’s most beautiful contemporary dancers. It returns with a full programme of works including a brand new world premiere for Norwich by Associate Choreographer Martin Lawrance.

Following the sell-out success of the West End run and UK tour, the Norfolk & Norwich Operatic Society is proud to bring the style and glamour of Hollywood’s Golden Age to the Theatre Royal stage in one of the greatest musicals of all time. Based on the magical Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers screwball musical comedy film of the same name, Top Hat is packed with Irving Berlin’s greatest hits, including Cheek to Cheek, Top Hat, White Tie and Tails, Let’s Face the Music and Dance and Puttin’ on the Ritz. It tells the story of Broadway star Jerry Travers and his pursuit of society girl Dale Tremont, as they dance their way across Europe. With colourful costumes, dazzling dance routines and riotous romantic comedy, Top Hat will leave you with a smile on your face and a song in your heart.

Over the course of one Midsummer’s Night, the whole world is turned upside down. By turns hilarious, poetic and magical, this is one of Shakespeare’s best-loved plays.

Thursday 14 – Saturday 16 December, 7.30pm at Stage Two

Following a sold out run at London’s Menier Chocolate Factory and two critically-acclaimed West End runs, David Baddiel takes his Olivier-nominated one-man show to theatres nationwide. My Family: Not the Sitcom is a show about memory, ageing, infidelity, dysfunctional relatives, moral policing on social media, golf, and gay cats. A massively disrespectful celebration of the lives of David Baddiel’s late sex-mad mother, Sarah, and dementia-ridden father, Colin. Come and be offended on David’s behalf!

CREATIVE MATTERS: GENDER & SEXUAL IDENTITY Wednesday 13 September, 7pm

RUBBER RING by James McDermott Friday 15 Sept, 7.30pm 14+

THE ADVENTURES OF PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT, cert15 When drag queen Anthony (Hugo Weaving) agress to take his act on the road, he invites fellow cross-dresser Adam (Guy Pearce) and transsexual Bernadette (Terence Stamp) to come along. In their colourful bus, Priscilla, the three performers travel across the Australian desert performing for enthusiastic crowds and homophobic locals. But when the other two performers learn the truth about why Anthony took the job, it threatens their act and their friendship.

Jimmy is sixteen, sexually confused and stuck in Sheringham. When pop star Morrissey comes to London, Jimmy flees to the city to try and find his hero and himself. A laugh-outloud coming of age comedy about a Norfolk teenager’s struggle with sexual and regional identity comes to Stage Two following critically acclaimed runs at Pleasance Islington, Brighton Fringe and The Tristan Bates Theatre in London’s West End. £8

Sunday 24 September, 2.30pm

THE DANISH GIRL, cert15

TESTOSTERONE presented by Rhum and Clay Wednesday 27 Sept 7.30pm 16+ This comical piece of physical theatre is an exploration of masculine identity through the lens of a ‘brand new man’, asking a series of questions: ‘When did I become a man?’, ‘Have I ever been a woman?’, and ‘When did I lose the right to cry?’. These questions are not merely rhetorical. As a trans man a year after his first injection of testosterone, Kit asks them, not only to better understand himself, but also to unpack the complex, contradictory and sometimes toxic world of men. £12

Based on the book by David Ebershoff, The Danish Girl is the remarkable love story inspired by the lives of Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener (portrayed by Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne [The Theory of Everything] and Alicia Vikander [Ex Machina]), and directed by Academy Award winner Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech, Les Misérables). Lili and Gerda’s marriage and work evolve as they navigate Lili’s groundbreaking journey as a transgender pioneer.
