Support Taylor Gough
Article by The Matt Hampson Foundation Taylor Gough remains in intensive care at Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham, where the Leicester Tigers back-rower has been since mid-June after being involved in a major road incident. The 20-year-old suffered multiple injuries, including severe spinal injuries, on the weekend ahead of the squads return to Phase One training at Oval Park and is currently suffering from paralysis and unable to move his legs. Speaking on behalf of the club, Leicester Tigers Chairman Peter Tom said We were all very sad to receive the news and, since finding out, everyone at Tigers has had Taylor in their thoughts. We have remained in daily contact with his family and will continue to support Taylor and them through this situation.

The club has supported him however we can at the moment and will continue to do so, for however long Taylor and his family need. His team-mates, especially those who he came through the junior ranks with, have had this on their minds during what has already been a challenging period and I cant speak highly enough about each of them and the way they have shown support and compassion for Taylor and his family, ahead of anything else.

Protecting Your Family’s Inheritance Article by Klara Hesling
Anstey WI
Article by Sheila Timms
Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually.
In August, Anstey WI committee held their first face to face meeting in a garden, which everyone agreed was much more satisfactory than using Zoom. The following week, four committee members entertained a group of ladies in their gardens. The weather was hot and oppressive, so finding enough shade was an issue, but a good time was had by all. It was a chance to socialise and catch up with friends, and we enjoyed a really good natter For one or two members it was the first such opportunity they had had. Many a grateful message was received afterwards.
But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT).
Roll On Bowls!
A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased.
Article by Sam Dobson Bowls has always been a great game and with a few minor changes it is easily adapted to comply with social distancing. This is what we are doing at St Margaret's Bowls Club and I can tell you that returning to the relaxed social environment is just what we need after the endless weeks of lockdown. We hear from Bowls England that an increasing number of people are taking up the game and many clubs have seen a real serge in membership since the lifting of lockdown. Now could be a great opportunity to give bowls a try, whatever your age or level of fitness. For further information, please contact me on: 0116 2677372
Film Presentations Thurcaston And Cropston Parish Council “Downton Abbey Article by Diana and Richard
We know this film is very popular. In fact, we have sold many tickets and know that we would have had a capacity audience in March, before we all realised how easy it is to develop the Coronavirus. If we were to show this film in September or October, we would need willing volunteers and a willing audience. However, with social distancing under the current restrictions, there would be insufficient room to present the film safely. We may have to wait until the New Year to show a film.

The surviving partner, under the terms of the Trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased's share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children's inheritance is protected. This last point can be of particular interest to couples who have come together and have children from different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property they can still sell the property and the proceeds be used to purchase a new property; the terms of the Trust remain over the new property. Kornerstone Wealth Protection and Legal services will assess your current circumstances and arrange the trust that will provide the best protection for you, your family and your assets.

Deborah Taylor Borough Councillor for Anstey
T: 0116 2350126 E: cllr.deborah.taylor@charnwood.gov.uk Cancelled Events Due to Covid-19, Charnwood Borough Council has had to cancel or modify key events for the rest of the year. • Loughborough Fair will not be happening in its usual format but instead a ceremony will take place to mark the 799th year of the Royal Charter Fair, accompanied by a few children’s rides • The Town Hall panto, Aladdin, will be postponed until 2021 • The usual Loughborough Christmas lights switch-on event in Market Place will be cancelled and replaced with a Christmas Market. The Christmas lights in Loughborough will still be switched on • The Remembrance Sunday service at the Carillon will still go ahead in November but it is proposed to cancel the parade. Remembrance Sunday Service at the Carillon in Queen’s Park will include prayers, the playing of the Last Post, and poppies being cascaded from the top of the Carillon. The service will be broadcast on social media so that all residents can be part of the remembrance service. All these events take months of planning so a decision needs to be taken now to focus efforts on alternative celebrations and to avoid incurring costs which cannot be recovered. All events will follow the guidance in place at the time on social distancing. Leisure Centres Charnwood Borough Council have been working with their partner Fusion, who operate the leisure centres on behalf of the Council, for the reopening of all the leisure centres in Charnwood. Fusion reopened the health and fitness facilities at Soar Valley Leisure Centre on the 3rd August, South Charnwood Leisure Centre on 10th August and Loughborough on 13th August. The swimming pools across all three sites also reopened on 13th August. There are significant financial implications for the Council to support the leisure centres to reopen and remain viable, due to the restrictions on numbers inside the centres to maintain the current social distancing guidelines, but it is hoped that government funding will cover the majority of these costs. The Council recognise the importance of staying healthy and active and that is why they were keen to reopen the leisure centres as soon as possible. Fusion’s website has all the details about bookings and the procedures that they have put in place to ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable visit. For more information about the reopening of all three leisure centres please visit the Fusion website: www.fusion-lifestyle.com/contracts/charnwood/ Booth Wood Local Nature Reserve Residents and visitors to Loughborough’s Booth Wood are being invited to have their say on plans to turn the area into a local nature reserve. Charnwood Borough Council is working with their partners idverde, to protect the wildlife at the beauty-spot and is running a consultation to hear the views of residents and visitors. The decision to designate the area as a local nature reserve will be made by Natural England. Local nature reserves receive a high level of protection from nearby development, meaning planners will need to take the area into consideration when looking at local planning proposals. As part of the process of becoming a local nature reserve, the council has produced a five-year management plan which outlines how they

and their partners will look after the area in the future. The plan includes ways to improve access to the wood, reduce antisocial behaviour and encourage more native species to populate the area. To read the five-year management plan for Booth Wood and have your say visit: www.charnwood.gov.uk/Boothwood Licencing Residents, landlords and businesses in Charnwood are being asked to give their views on two proposed licencing schemes. The Borough Council is proposing to introduce two different licencing schemes for private landlords. The aim is to improve the quality of privately-rented accommodation and reduce its impact on the local community. The online consultations are now open and will run until 23rd October. For more information about each proposed scheme and to take part in the online consultation visit: www.charnwood.gov.uk/ pslc Following the consultations, Charnwood’s Cabinet will consider whether to adopt the proposed licencing schemes in December. Guided Walks Residents of Charnwood will be able to enjoy guided walks again from 10th August. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the guided walks, organised by Charnwood Borough Council’s Active Charnwood team, will be a bit different to previous events to ensure Government guidelines are followed and risks to residents and walk leaders are minimised. The team have published a list of walks that began on Tuesday 11th August and will now be published on a regular fortnightly basis. The differences in place for the time being to keep everyone safe are: • All places on the walks are for pre-booking only. This is to ensure the group size doesn't exceed the Government guidelines and that the team have the necessary details in case of the need to support a test and trace process • Anyone turning up to a walk who has not pre-booked will be turned away. This includes other members of your own household who have not had a place booked for them • Walks will be split into groups of up to six people including the walk leader • There is unlikely to be access to toilets at the start/finish • There may not be access to a cafe at the end of the walk. To enable as many people as possible to join in on regular group walks, the number of places available to book at any one time will be limited. At present, one place can be booked per person per fortnight. The team will hold waiting lists for walks and record interest from you if you wish to be considered for extra walks within the fortnight. They will then contact names on the waiting list on a first come first served basis if there are places available in the day, or days prior to the walk. This process will be reviewed regularly. You are encouraged to bring your own face coverings and PPE. The walks will be adhering to 2m social distancing, or 1m+ for short periods where this is not possible. In general, the routes will avoid touch points like gates and stiles. However, these may be encountered, therefore bringing your own hand-sanitiser is advised. Walk schedules, details and booking information can be found on the Charnwood Sport website at www.charnwoodsport.org.uk/
walking and promoted on Facebook @ActiveCharnwood, Twitter @ ActiveCharnwood and Instagram Active_Charnwood as new walks are added and published. Updates The new bollards have now been installed outside the Post Office on Bradgate Road to make the area safer for pedestrians and prevent vehicles mounting the pavement.

The play area on the Davidsons, Groby Road estate, has been vandalised again. This has been reported to Davidsons and we are awaiting a repair. If anyone has any information regarding the damage, please pass this onto the police. A few of the businesses in the village have been targeted by shoplifters over the past few months. We are pleased to report that as a shoplifter ran out of the door of QD recently, our local Police beat team were patrolling across the road. They gave chase and the shoplifter was caught. He was also wanted for other crimes and is now awaiting trial. A good result for the partnership working within the village and sends a strong message out that we are working hard to keep the village safe and we will not tolerate crime.

The Odes Of Aunt Pat Article by Kirby Lad
I've wondered where I got the knack Of writing verses back to back On subjects ranging far and wide On things I like, or can't abide I've rang on bells and knocked on doors And searched the world with ne'er a pause I've been up avenues and roads To find the source of all these odes
Anstey Nomads
Article by Adam Etheridge As preseason winds down to its climax, Anstey Nomads have turned their attentions to the coming season. Through their first seven friendlies, the Nomads won four, drew one and lost two. Preseason got out to a flying start with Corey Armeni bagging a hat-trick as Anstey came from behind to defeat Kirby Muxloe 4-2. Allexton & New Parks were comfortably dispatched 5-0 before a 4-0 defeat at home to Barwell. A side made-up largely of trialists fell 3-1 at home to Bingham Town before Nomads bounced back with wins over Hinckley AFC and Long Buckby AFC either side of a 3-3 draw with big-spending Newark. The preparation has been invaluable for Tony Blanchard’s side as they begin their FA Cup campaign on the 1st of September, with a home tie versus UCL Premier Division rivals Sleaford Town. The two sides met at Cropston Road in January, when a Henry Bestwick hat-trick helped the Nomads to a 9-0 win. A similar result in the Cup would see Anstey handed another home tie, this time to Worksop Town (that potential tie would be played on Saturday the 12th of September). Hot on the heals of the FA Cup is the beginning of their UCL Premier Division campaign. The Nomads start at home to Holbeach United. The Tigers most recent visit to Callingtons Community Complex saw the Lincolnshire side triumph 2-0 on Saturday the 17th of August 2019. Anstey's first away trip of the season will see them head south to face Northampton O.N. Chenecks on Wednesday the 9th of September. The Nomads' first Leicestershire derby falls on Wednesday the 16th, when they entertain Lutterworth Town. Then it's back on the road as they travel to Nottinghamshire where they'll meet Hucknall Town in the FA Vase on the 19th. The Nomads round out September with League matches away to Wellingborough Town (Saturday 26th) and their first Leicestershire derby on the road, versus Shepshed Dynamo (Tuesday 29th).
Across the world I’ve met with with sages And questioned them for simply ages Had conversations of all sorts And closely studied their reports And having gathered all their thought The gist of which I think I've caught I have great volumes to review To analyse and think anew And now I've studied all the gen From all the women and the men I've worked out what the whole thing means The rhyming comes from Aunt Pat's genes The words come streaming from her head 'bout birds and bees and men called Fred If on Ebay I’m sure a lot'll Buy her genes for sale in bottles
Bobbin Lace
Article by Susan Marlow Bobbin lace is a craft that is slowly seeing a revival along with other crafts such as knitting and dressmaking. As with most crafts, having someone to help you with the basics is a big help. Bobbin lace classes are being held at Groby Village Hall, Leicester Road, Groby, LE6 0DQ on Tuesday evenings and Wednesday mornings. They are suitable for beginners and those with some knowledge. Equipment can be borrowed for a short period to see if bobbin lace is for them and the first week is free as a taster session. A beginners bobbin lace kit is available for purchase from the tutor as it is difficult to purchase from Leicester shops. The cost of each session works out at £3.70p per week for 30 weeks. Deborah Taylor County Councillor for Bradgate Division
T: 0116 2350126 - E: deborah.taylor@leics.gov.uk I am still working from home and all my meetings are on the ‘virtual’ platform. I did manage to get out to Ashby to put the first spade in the ground for the foundations of a new 210-place primary school being built. The state-of-the-art Holywell Spring Farm Primary School on Burton Road is being created as part of a new 400-home development being built in the area. The new school is estimated to cost in the region of £5.5m with funding from Leicestershire County Council capital building programme and contributions from developers. It was good to get out and about and I look forward to returning to Ashby once the school is built.
I have also been supporting schools in getting ready for pupils to go back for the autumn term. By the time you read this edition of ‘Your Local’ all schools should be open for all pupils. We continue to have local ‘hot spots’ of Covid-19 outbreaks but we are managing to contain these. Please ensure you continue to follow the current government guidance by wearing face coverings, washing your hands regularly and maintaining 2m distance from other people. There is also some useful advice about car sharing further down in my report. This has been highlighted as an area that needs focus after a few local outbreaks have been traced back to car sharing. Society is beginning to open more, and I have been supporting local eateries by using the government scheme ‘Eat out to Help out’. It was certainly nice not to have to cook for a few nights! I also managed to get away for a ‘staycation’ during August and enjoyed a week away at a cottage in Shropshire with our two dogs. It was good to get away to relax and switch off both the laptops. It has been a very busy few months and this was my first break since Christmas, so it was definitely needed! Car Sharing Advice for car sharers about ways to keep safe is now available. National advice is to try not to share a vehicle with those outside your household or support bubble, whilst recognising this isn’t always possible. Some of the suggested safety measures to take are: • If possible, share the transport with the same people each time • Keep to small groups of people at any one time • Open windows for ventilation • Travel side by side or behind other people, rather than facing them, where seating arrangements allow • Face away from each other • Consider seating arrangements to maximise distance between people in the vehicle • Clean your car between journeys using standard cleaning

products - make sure you clean door handles and other areas that people may touch • Ask the driver and passengers to wear face coverings • Use hand sanitiser in the car Drivers are also reminded to expect more pedestrians and cyclists, especially at the peak times of the day. Where possible, allow other road users to maintain social distancing. For example, give cyclists space at traffic lights. The above information is available in nine different languages and can be downloaded online at: https://www. leicestershire.gov.uk/prevent-the-spread-of-the-virus Wildflower Revolution Twelve parishes have signed up for wild flower verges this year. The county council’s verge initiative aims to improve biodiversity and encourage wildlife, by leaving wildflowers to flourish on roadside verges across Leicestershire. The initiative forms part of the council’s wider work to tackle climate change and commitment to becoming carbon neutral by 2030. The twelve parish councils across Leicestershire are working hard planting and cultivating verges for their new wildflower verges to bloom next year. Residents and Parishes interested in joining the wild flower verge scheme can contact the team on: ETDSpecialProjects@leics.gov.uk As well as the wild flower initiative the county council has changed their management of rural verges between towns and villages. This year marked the largest reduction in the areas of rural verges that the county council has cut, all to allow wildflowers to thrive and encourage pollinators. Bradgate Parking Scheme I am continuing to work hard on securing the funding for this scheme. Newtown Linford Parish Council (PC) have been working closely with myself, Cllr Snartt and the highways department at the county council to pull this scheme together. It has been enjoyable to witness great partnership working, with the clear focus of improving obstructive parking in the villages around Bradgate Park. I am pleased to report that Thurcaston & Cropston PC are in support of the scheme and are considering offering some financial support to Newtown Linford PC to provide funding towards the overall scheme, if it goes ahead following the public consultation. They have also added additional areas within their parish to the consultation where they too, have issues with parking. Anstey PC has also had sight of the proposed scheme and held a discussion around the scheme and funding. There are some areas of Anstey included in the overall scheme. Anstey PC has decided to wait until the outcome of the public consultation before taking a decision regarding financially supporting the overall scheme. The proposed maps for the scheme are just being finalised and it is hoped that we will be ready to go out for public consultation by the end of August/beginning of September for 4 weeks. Unfortunately, this does not coincide with the publication of ‘Your Local’ so please keep an eye on the Leicestershire County Council consultation page: www.leicestershire.gov.uk/search/site/ Consultations?nid=66651 I will also be advertising the public consultation on my Facebook Page: www.facebook.com/CllrDTaylor and Twitter Feed: @ CllrDTaylor This will also include the details of how to submit your comments. Please take the time to respond to the consultation, whether you support the scheme or not, to ensure that your voice is heard. This is a big change in the parking restrictions around Bradgate Park and we must get it right. We need the views of as many residents as possible.
Recycling Sites Leicestershire County Council’s last two sites have now reopened. Loughborough and Somerby recycling and household waste sites are now open and that means that all of the 14 sites in the county are now open to the public. Nine of the sites will be open five days a week and two sites have increased to opening seven days. The remaining sites will be open for 2-3 days each week during the ongoing pandemic. The county council has been monitoring site usage, and the new opening times reflect demand across the sites. Mountsorrel and Whetstone are the county’s busiest, and since reopening have had over 20,000 visitors to each site. Both sites have had an average of 250-300 visitors each day. Visitors will still need to book a slot to visit, so that social distancing can be observed, and restrictions on some waste types are still in place at some sites. Sites will continue to be open between 9am and 5pm. For more information about individual sites’ opening times’, to book an appointment and for further details on recycling and waste in Leicestershire, visit: www.leicestershire.gov.uk/waste or call 0116 305 0001. Leicester College To Re-Open To Students On 1st September 2020 Article by Simon Gribbon
Leicester College will officially re-open for the autumn term on Tuesday 1 September 2020. In line with government guidelines, Leicester College has conducted significant work to keep staff and students as safe as possible and ensure that all campuses are COVID-secure. This will enable the College to welcome thousands of students and staff across its four main campuses in the city. New safety procedures at Leicester College include: • Hand sanitizer stations at every entrance • Additional signage to advise on how to keep safe on campus

• Students and staff will be expected to wear a face covering while on campus (unless they have a medical reason not to do so) • Social distancing will be maintained in classrooms so most class sizes will be reduced - teaching will be a combination of online and onsite lessons • Receptions and student services centres have perspex screens • Only people with breathing or mobility difficulties will be permitted to use the lifts • To maintain social distancing, some lessons will be taught remotely and there will be more independent study away from College. Tutors will be in regular contact with students throughout their timetable and additional support will be available. New and existing students will enrol online and will be issued with a timetable. They should only come into College buildings when timetabled to do so or if they need to access other facilities such as the library. To enrol online, read the FAQs or for more information on the safety guidelines in place, visit https://leicestercollege.ac.uk/about/wereopen-for-the-autumn-term/ Verity Hancock, Principal and CEO at Leicester College said: “Our staff and support teams have been extremely diligent in getting ready for the autumn term, following all government and official public health guidelines to ensure that all of our facilities, services and courses are ready for the re-opening. The way we work and how each of our campuses look will be a bit different and although we understand that it may take some time to get used to the new arrangements, we can’t wait to get started again and are all really looking forward to welcoming students back to the College.” For anyone still unsure about what to do for the next stages of their education, it’s not too late to apply for a course at Leicester College.

Anstey Parish Council Article by Liz Hawkes
Social Distancing & Active Travel in Anstey Leicestershire CC are supporting Anstey recover from the COVID 19 pandemic by funding temporary Social Distancing measures and supporting Active Travel. Anstey PC will be putting forward the following proposal to the County Council at this point in time we are unsure if they will be acceptable from a Highways Safety Perspective. Anstey Parish Council propose to implement the following temporary Social Distancing measures within Anstey. These would initially be for 3 months, at which point their continued presence and duration will be considered against the Government guidance in place at that time as well as their local impacts. Please contact the Parish Council with any concerns about the following proposals, by 11th September 2020. Widening of the pavement around The Nook from the Dentist on Bradgate Road to No 10 Stadon Road. This pavement is very narrow and is used by people who are sitting outside Peppercorns CafĂŠ and queuing the Post Office, Chemist and Hardware store widening it will make it possible to pass people queuing for the shops at a safe distance. The pavement is also used by those using the cash dispenser on Stadon Road. Removal of 3 parking bays outside the Coach and Horses. This will create more pedestrian space on the route to school. Social distancing signs at schools including signs to remind people of the socially distancing rules in place and bollards outside of school gates where space is limited. Your can contact the Council in the following ways. By Post: Parish Office, Jubilee Hall, Stadon Road, Anstey, Leicester LE7 7AY Telephone: (0116) 236 2646 mobile: 07458 305025 Email: clerk@ansteypc.org Parish Council Meetings will be held on the following Tuesday evenings 1st September and 22nd September starting at 7.30 meetings are currently virtually via zoom the link to the meetings is advertised on the agenda which can be found on the councils website. www.ansteypc.org.uk/council-meetings.html all members of the public are welcome to these meetings. David Snartt Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate
T: 01530 244804 - E: cllr.david.snartt@charnwood.gov.uk The Loughborough Town Hall Panto, Aladdin, will be postponed until 2021 and the Loughborough Christmas lights switch on event in the Market Place will be cancelled, replacing it with a Christmas market. The Christmas lights will still be switched on. I also note, the Remembrance Sunday Service at the Carillon will go ahead in November, it is proposed to cancel the parade.
Mayor of Charnwood Since becoming Mayor of Charnwood at a virtual Mayor Making ceremony the Mayoress and myself have started to attend engagements. We visited Loughborough University where we were able to welcome Olympic Gold Medal winner Adam Peaty back to the swimming pool, which is now open for Loughborough’s international athletes to resume training in the run-up to the Olympic Games in Tokyo next year. We also made a visit to the Charnwood Community Action Hub to mark the delivery of the 10,000th food parcel. Since launching in March, Charnwood Community Action, which is a partnership with the Borough Council, John Storer House and other voluntary organisations, have delivered this amount of parcels and they are currently delivering to around 600 households each week. The team have also been providing a befriending service to residents and signposting people to a range of services. For more information please visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/cca I recorded a message on VJ Day to mark the 75th anniversary of the ending of the Second World War. This day is a significant moment in our history and it is important, in my view, for us all to acknowledge and remember the sacrifices made by many, including those who continued the battle in the Far East until Japan surrendered on August 15th 1945. On VJ Day this year we also attended, along with Colonel Martin, the unveiling of the Thorpe Acre War Memorial, which had the names of local servicemen who paid the ultimate sacrifice during both World Wars. Community Stars More than 60 individuals, community groups and local businesses have been recognised as Community Stars helping their local communities during the coronavirus pandemic. Community Action Stars was launched by the Borough Council to give people the chance to say a public thank you to those who have made a difference by helping others. I am delighted that Newtown Linford Parish Council are included in the Roll of Honour for co-ordinating a leaflet that was sent to every household in the Parish, giving details of volunteers who were willing to help, and the Woodhouse Good Neighbour Scheme for the excellent work they are doing to help communities within the Parish. Also included, John Patterson for delivering newspapers to residents around Newtown Linford every day of the week. Planning Application In last months’ report I referred to a planning application at 11 Windmill Rise, Woodhouse Eaves. This has since been amended with a revised description of a single storey extension to the south side of dwelling, two storey extension to west side and raising the roof by 0.77 metres over resultant dwelling. Erection of a single garage. Full details can be found on Charnwood Borough Council’s website under the original planning application number P/20/0829/2 Planning For An Alternative Christmas And Fair Charnwood Borough Council is looking at alternative ways to celebrate Christmas and mark the annual Loughborough Fair in November as it considers cancelling key events due to the coronavirus pandemic. Loughborough Fair will not happen in its usual format, there will be no big rides and instead a ceremony will take place to mark the 799th year of the Royal Charter Fair, accompanied by a few children’s rides.
16 | www.openboxpromotions.co.uk/news
As the Mayor of Charnwood this is most disappointing, I know the Christmas events are enjoyed by so many people. I do though understand with the current circumstances the safety of everyone is paramount. These events take months of planning and Charnwood Borough Council says it needs to make decisions now to focus efforts on alternative celebrations and to avoid incurring costs which cannot be recovered. I have already asked if it would be possible to have an event in the Town Hall to support my two charities LOROS and Admiral Nurses. I am keen to do all I can to support my charities at this difficult time, I will let you know if I am successful in arranging an event during the Christmas period. Reception Open Charnwood Borough Council have opened its’ Customer Service Centre to customers with essential enquiries on an appointment only basis. Customers will be able to make appointments to visit the Council offices in Southfields Road, Loughborough by calling 01509 634560. Appointments with a customer advisor are available from Monday to Friday 8.30am until 4.30pm, closed one hour for lunch from 12.30pm. Customers will be given a 30 minute slot with an advisor. Customers are urged to continue to use online services where possible. The Council website can be used to make payments, submit planning applications, apply for housing, manage your council tax and benefits and much more. Keep up to date on any service changes during the coronavirus pandemic by visiting www.charnwood.gov.uk/coronavirus Guided Walks Around Charnwood Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the guided walks organised by the Borough Council’s Active Charnwood Team, will be a bit different to previous events to ensure Government guidelines are followed and risks to walkers and leaders are minimised. The team will publish the list of walks on a fortnightly basis. The differences in place for the time being include: All places on the walks are for pre-booking only. This is to ensure the group size does not exceed the Government guidelines and the team have the necessary details in case of the need to support a test and trace process. Anyone turning up to walk who has not pre-booked will be turned away. More information, walk schedules, details and booking information can be found on Charnwood Sport Website at www.charnwoodsport.org.uk/walking Grants Available For Homes And Businesses Residents of Charnwood who were victims of flooding after Storms Ciara and Dennis in February 2020 may be eligible for a grant. The Property Flood Resilience Recovery Support Scheme Grant 2020 is funded by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs and administered by Charnwood Borough Council to residents on their behalf. The recovery grant can cover works up to the value of £5,000 (inclusive of VAT) with the aim of helping home or business owners to make their properties resilient to future floods as part of the repair process. The Council is aware of approximately 40 properties that were affected and are contacting the owners directly, but any property owners who could benefit from the support are encouraged to check the eligibility criteria and apply. Claims will be dealt with promptly, and all eligible funding is expected to be claimed within the current financial year (March 31st 2021). The final date for applications is December 31st 2020. In exceptional cases, extensions to these deadlines may be granted. Visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/flood_grant for full details and to apply. Anstey Slimmers Come Back Together After Months Of Virtual Slimming Article by Louise Valk
Slimmers from ANSTEY are making a ‘comeback’ as their Slimming World groups reopen, with Louise Valk the local Slimming World Consultants saying she's excited to be back helping members to lose weight and improve their health in person. Slimming World has been supporting members virtually in online weekly groups since March, when lockdown closed all of the organisation’s community support groups. Now, following the current easing of restrictions in many areas, real-life groups are beginning to reopen step-by-step. Louise the Slimming World Consultants in Anstey and Groby are putting measures in place to ensure groups comply fully with government and local guidance and that their members can return safely to their much-loved Slimming World groups from 3 September. Louise was a Groby group member in 2016 and has been taking care of all Anstey members in groups over lockdown as well as her Groby and Birstall groups and says, our virtual groups have been a vital lifeline of support and I’m so proud of how my members have been there for each other through these difficult months and continued to lose weight and get more active. There’s nothing quite like the magic of our real-life groups, though, and research of our members during lockdown has shown that while our members have loved attending their virtual groups they’ve missed the motivational power and accountability of meeting in person each week.” The health and safety of members has been the top priority in planning the return of Slimming World groups: “Members will find a few things have changed in our groups to ensure that everyone feels as safe, confident and comfortable as they possibly can. This includes appropriate social distancing, hygiene measures and shorter sessions, which we’ll be asking members to book in to before attending. What hasn’t changed is the gorgeous warm welcome, feeling of togetherness and the joy of being ‘in it together’ week on week.
Please Help Us Stay Open Article by Loros We are currently experiencing a severe volunteer shortage, with many of our shops operating reduced hours and trading days. Could you spare just a few hours a week to help us? With school out for summer, and many of us still on furlough, there's never been a better time to help your local Hospice. We have a range of exciting opportunities available in the warehouse, shops and selling on eBay, and when you sign up to volunteer, we'll work with you to find a position that's perfect for you. We are recruiting across all shops, with an urgent need for help in our Market Harborough, Oakham, Ashby and Coalville shops. Please, help us stay open. Email, joelliott@loros. co.uk, for more information and to apply.

“As well as looking forward to ‘that feeling’ of being back together with our existing Slimming World members, we can’t wait to welcome new members in my groups too. Obesity is a huge issue in the news at the moment with evidence showing that carrying extra weight makes it harder for the body to fight COVID-19, and the Government announcing brand-new plans to tackle obesity across the UK – which Slimming World are very proud be part of. Plus, we know many people’s routines were turned upside down by lockdown and lots of us have been feeling more worried or anxious than usual, all of which can have an impact on making healthy choices.” “ For anyone who’s worrying about their weight or health – especially if they’ve put on extra pounds during lockdown – there will be absolutely no judgement at a Slimming World group – just lots of understanding and a very warm welcome. At Slimming World losing weight isn’t about going hungry – our eating plan is extra easy, very delicious and super generous. And moving more doesn’t mean running marathons – unless you want to, of course. “Our groups are hubs of recipe-swapping, idea-sharing and problem-solving activity. Through our weekly sessions, you’ll discover how to identify the stoppers and potential pitfalls that could send you off track – or that have maybe prevented you from reaching your weight-loss goals in the past – and learn to develop strategies to overcome them. The new healthy habits you’ll discover will soon become habits of a lifetime, and there really is no better time to start afresh when it comes to developing new lifelong healthy habits around food and activity because, as many of the members of our groups have seen, when you lose weight you’re already doing one of the very best things you can to future-proof your health.” Anstey Slimming World groups run on wednesdays throughout the day in Anstey Methodist Church. For more info Louise on 07525 447752.

Anstey RFC Are Awaiting A Start Date For The 2020/21 Season Article by Chris Apperley
It was great to see Premiership Rugby return in recent weeks where the big clubs are finishing off the 2019/20 season - Good luck to the new look Leicester Tigers! Internationals restart in late October and the new Premiership 2020/21 Rugby Season kicks off on 20th November. All being well, now that the top flight have been given their start dates for the new season this will very soon trickle down to Community Local Rugby and finally Anstey RFC will be able to start the new campaign. Preparations at your local village club have been intense in recent weeks where we are keen to build on our top of the table finish to the 2019/20 season. Best ever numbers have been training at our Link Road Ground every Wednesday evening, complimented by long bike rides and runs during the week giving us a highly toned up and fit squad all ready and eager to take on all comers. Like all small clubs we have been following the Rugby Football Union’s (RFU) ‘Return To Rugby Road Map for the Community Game’ which maps out a six phased plan getting training and playing under way again post the strictest Covid -19 restrictions. For ages we have been stuck on the second stage B, but the good news is that since early August we have been able to move to stage C giving us greater opportunities to expand training activities in much larger groups and more. So Onwards and Upwards. We have a strong experienced committee in place following our AGM on 5th July with all roles filled which compliments the continued enthusiasm of our ever growing playing squad.

smARTsy The Art Of Glass Fusion Article by Ali Groschl
Did you know that there is a thriving glass fusion business in the heart of Ratby? Run by ex-teacher Ali Groschl, family business ‘smARTsy’ began five years ago, when Ali identified a lack of arts and crafts provision in the area. Initially working with local primary schools in Kirby Muxloe, Groby, and Ratby, Ali ran after school art clubs, as well as setting up a Saturday Art School at her Ratby home. In addition, classes for adults were offered in the evenings. Most new businesses evolve over time, and now smARTsy is best known for offering affordable and friendly glass fusion workshops to a wide range of people including schools, families, scouting and guiding groups, WI groups and corporate organisations. Recognition of Ali’s entrepreneurial skills came recently when she was chosen to be one of 365 U.K. women to feature in a book SHECAN#365, which ironically arrived during lockdown. The instant closure of workshops in March and the loss of 50 customers making their own glass every week meant that Ali had to diversify. Since lockdown, Ali has given her time for free to make over 700 rainbow arches for NHS and key workers but an income needed to be made too, so glass fusion kits to make at home are available to hire, plus glass art is available to buy and commissions welcomed. Ali has also welcomed the chance to focus on developing a new side to the business which focuses on affordable and very personal fused glass memorials. Along with her daughter, May, Ali has perfected the art of incorporating ashes into glass, and so far between them have made some beautifully bespoke pieces that include the ashes of people and of pets. All small businesses rely on the support of their local community so please take a look at both smARTsy on Facebook, and the sister page Forget Me Not Fused Glass Memorials. If you are interested in making your own glass items, have a look at the website www.smartsy.co.uk, or email Ali at smartsy@hotmail.co.uk (Please refer to our website www.smartsy.co.uk for dates with spaces. The symbols represent how many spaces are available. When you have chosen your date, please either use ‘InstantBook’ on the website to book with PayPal, or email to arrange a bank transfer or cheque. There is an ‘essential reading’ section that we ask you to read prior to booking please.)

St Botolph’s Church Christian Aid Group Covid-19 Cookbook Article by Jane Payne
Throughout COVID-19 lockdown we have seen many symbols of hope, love and community spirit, and, we have been witness to the gifts of creativity within the community of Shepshed. In the lockdown St Botolph’s Church did many creative things, we decorated the railings for Easter, VE Day and Pentecost. Many of the church members volunteered to help people by shopping, collecting prescriptions, visiting, phoning and baking for others. The church quickly adapted to the changing times by using their talents to help one another. It was so difficult that we couldn’t do the normal house to house collections and other events had to be cancelled that we usually organise for Christian Aid. The following words from a member of the St Botolph’s Church Christian Aid Group during lockdown has inspired the creation of a Covid-19 Cookbook: "Presently, we are not able to meet or sit around a table for companionship. However, we could contribute to spiritually feeding one another by sharing our talents, as another way of demonstrating hope during difficult times" As you will be aware many charities are struggling with their fundraising this year due to COVID-19. Christian Aid is no different as their traditional fund-raising methods have been cancelled Door to Door collection, Sponsored Walk, Cake Stall, Coffee Morning and Concert. Here in Shepshed two members of our Christian Aid fundraising group Kath and Sam came up with the brilliant idea of creating a COVID-19 cookbook using recipes from our local community. It contains more than 40 favourite recipes some of which have been passed between generations and friends, such as soup, curry, lasagne, pudding and of course cakes and traybakes. Please support this worthy charity. If you would like a copy of the cookbook please contact Jane Payne 07980 033556, Isobel Goodliffe 07810 241302 or email office@ shepshedandoaks.co.uk so that collection and payment of £5 can be arranged. Thank you in anticipation for your support.
