RSPCA Plant Stall And Open Garden At Snowy Owl’s House In Cropston Article by Irene Marriott

I would like to thank everybody who came along to my two day open garden and plant stall on Latimer Road in Cropston at the end of June. Special thanks must go to Ruth and Sue (and Lottie, the dog) from the RSPCA, who sheltered from the wind under the gazebo and cheerfully answered animal questions as well as selling veg plants, flowering plants, shrubs, dog toys, shopping bags etc. Recent strong winds and rain had ruined my lovely display of white roses and tangled up the raspberries and currants. However in the front garden my exotic New Zealand Bottle Brush, with its flame red blooms, burst into flower the day before and welcomed people to the event and was quite a talking point. Visitors arrived, used the hand gel and, keeping to social distancing advice, followed a one way system around the flower borders, greenhouse and fruit and vegetable plots. Star attractions were the view across the fields and Rothley Brook to Thurcaston, the plant pot people and the huge Green Man made from netting on the rockery, the enormous cucumber in the greenhouse, the wind spinner, the willow weave insects flying above your head as they dangled from the Eucalyptus tree, the giant lollipop bay trees with Hot Lips Salvia blooming underneath. A very special thank you to two 1st. Thurcaston Brownies, Holly and Alethea who had made and donated friendship bracelets and macrame items to sell. Christine Miranda, Barn Owl, deserves thanks too for help putting up posters on all the surrounding village notice boards and dog walking foot paths. Several people had read the posters and appeared before the event with donations of spare plants. Thank You. By the end of Saturday, Ruth and Sue had sold so many plants that I had to send a message to the Brownies, and to Thurcaston and Cropston Open Gardeners, appealing for spare plants and carrier bags for the next day. Sunday morning and to great relief I saw that the gazebo was still standing. Chris and I had tied the gazebo’s guy ropes to two trees, a drainpipe and a secure trellis

before the strong winds could blow it away. A £5 note had been pushed through the letterbox. T & C Open Gardeners and Brownies appeared with bags and plants. Thank you so very much to all who helped. Sunday whizzed by selling well and chatting to visitors but less people today as we were competing with a televised football match with no one in the stands. Leicester City 0 : 1 Chelsea. At the end of the weekend, thank you lovely people, we raised £511.46. for the RSPCA. The spare perennial plants are to be sold at Ruth and Sue’s house in Glenfield (see below). The left over vegetable plants have found a home at the forest preschool in Shepshed. In past years my Open Garden has included a stall for the Glenfield (WI) Country Market and there were a few disappointed visitors who had hoped to buy cakes and jams as well as plants. But here is how the market has recently installed a way of keeping in touch with customers old and new: Are you missing home made cakes, savouries and jams? Glenfield (W.I) Country Market has temporarily closed because of the Corona Virus pandemic. However, the cakes, savouries, jams, marmalades and chutneys are available through our new Order and Collect service. Collection is from 44 Triumph Rd, Glenfield LE3 8FS, fortnightly on Fridays 10.30 -11.30 am. Plants to support the RSPCA Leicestershire Branch based at Woodside Animal Centre are available to buy at the collection address. We hope to expand our “Order and Collect” service to include cards and crafts in the future. Contact glenfieldmarket@gmail.com for more details and an order form.

Anstey WI Sheila Timms

Once the committee of Anstey WI were able to meet via Zoom, they began to think about ways to compensate members for the loss of several meetings, and goody bags were settled on. In July there is usually a garden party in a member’s garden, so the bags contained the components of an afternoon tea: a teabag, several homemade cakes and a pretty floral paper napkin. In addition, there was a felt heart crafted by Angela Rossa, and a colourful newsletter to let members know what some of their fellows had been up to during lockdown. This was compiled by Sheila Timms and Anne Spanswick. A cryptic quiz, for which a prize will be awarded, was included to keep those grey cells working, and lastly each bag held a ticket for the National Federation of Womens Institutes’ annual raffle. The bags were packed and delivered by Angela Rossa and Jan Chandler. Clearly they struck a chord, as over the next few days a flurry of thank you messages were received on email and WhatsApp, many saying it had been a lovely surprise. On the doorstep Jan and Angela were told it was a treat to have someone call in person, and how people had missed being able to meet. Soon afterwards, a few members met for a walk, followed by a picnic in a garden. The weather was not promising, so fewer ladies came than had been expected, but they are now to be a regular event, so we hope that numbers will grow. It was so good to have a good natter with a real person in the flesh. We are optimistic of more such opportunities in the future.

The Charnwood Gardener Article by Peter Flood

Lessons From A LockedDown Allotment Leicester’s return to stricter lockdown measures created a unique situation for me and Mrs Charnwood Gardener. Our allotment was inside the restricted zone, but we were outside. A surprise Salvia viridis at our plot As much as we might have felt otherwise, we couldn’t really justify going there as essential travel, so we bit the bullet and left it to fend for itself. Although the outer area of Leicester had restrictions lifted earlier than other parts, by the time I finally made my way there it had been close to four weeks. As I pulled in through the gates and made my way down the grassy path, I was expecting to come across a jungle of weeds and spoiled produce; a ruinous wasteland of neglect. But when I reached our plot, I was shocked. Rather than brambles and nettles, dozens of flowers had popped up. Annuals that we’d grown last year for our wedding had self-sown everywhere and, having escaped my over-zealous hoeing, managed to flower. Not only that, but our veg was thriving – tomatoes, squash and courgettes were all benefitting from the influx of pollinators attracted by the colourful volunteers. It was something to behold. A happy accident created by unhappy circumstances – a thriving, colourful plot with a lovely nostalgic twist. Nature is quite the garden designer – sometimes I think we should give up and leave her to it. AUGUST TIP: This month’s tip is inspired by my allotment experience. If you’re fortunate enough to garden the same space for several years, you can gradually alter the resident flora, and by doing so almost remove the need to weed. Initially, be sure to remove all weeds regularly, before they flower. Over time, these will become less and less prolific as the seed burden in the soil is depleted. Meanwhile, introduce garden plants that will happily selfseed, like hellebores, geraniums and foxgloves. Over time, the only ‘weeds’ you’ll get will be beautiful ornamentals.

Protecting Your Family’s Inheritance Article by Klara Hesling Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually. But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the Trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased's share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children's inheritance is protected. This last point can be of particular interest to couples who have come together and have children from different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property they can still sell the property and the proceeds be used to purchase a new property; the terms of the Trust remain over the new property. Kornerstone Wealth Protection and Legal services will assess your current circumstances and arrange the trust that will provide the best protection for you, your family and your assets.

Deborah Taylor Borough Councillor for Anstey

T: 0116 2350126 E: cllr.deborah.taylor@charnwood.gov.uk Local Lockdown A month is a long time when the country is in the middle of a pandemic. In our last report we were welcoming the relaxing of the lockdown to allow more shops and services to open their doors for the first time since March. Within days of going to print, the whole situation had changed locally, with Leicester City going back into a local area lockdown. This also affected parts of Charnwood including Birstall, Wanlip, Thurmaston and part of Anstey. Residents of Charnwood were naturally very frustrated by being included in the lockdown zone but due to some of Charnwood being in close proximity to the city and the natural movement of people, Public Health England advised that parts of the county should be included within the lockdown zone. This was done to try and prevent the spread of the infection and to save lives. The data and reasoning are far too complex to put into our report but if you need any more information or support, please do contact us. The local area lockdown was reviewed on Thursday 16th July and the boundary of the lockdown area was changed. Leicester City and Oadby and Wigston remain in a local area lockdown but all areas of Charnwood were removed from the lockdown on 18th July and are now in line with the rest of England. There is further information on Charnwood Borough Council’s website: www.charnwood.gov. uk/pages/restrictions Business Community Following our patch walk around the village with the Police and Crime Commissioner in the autumn last year, we became aware that we had a major issue in the village with shop lifting and people behaving in a suspicious manner. We created a ‘WhatsApp’ business group which has now grown to 23 businesses on the group. We share important information, more recently about the local lockdown, scams that are going around and CCTV images are shared of shop lifters. The CCTV images are shared quickly, and this puts all the other businesses on high alert in case those shoplifters are going from shop to shop. These crimes are all reported to the police and shop lifting is an area of concern that we have raised with the new Police Sargent for Anstey, Sgt Kilsby. The group have also supported each other during the closure of many of the businesses during the lockdown and kept everyone’s sprits up. If any other business would like to join the group, please do get in touch with your mobile phone number and we can add you to the group. It would be great if we could get all Anstey's businesses to join the group. Annual Council Meeting The first ever virtual council meeting ran without a hitch on Monday 29th June. Charnwood’s Mayoral chains were handed over virtually as Cllr David Snartt became the 47th first citizen of the borough. The Mayor of Charnwood normally attends up to 500 events per year, but since March all engagements have been cancelled or postponed. The Mayor will continue to represent the borough and citizens at official engagements, whether they are socially distanced or virtual. Cllr Snartt was first elected to the council in 2003 and lately sat on the Plans Committee. From 2005 to 2017 he also served as a County Councillor for the Bradgate Division and on retiring from the role was made an Honorary Alderman. Cllr Snartt has chosen Loros and Admiral Nurses as the 2020-21 Mayoral charities. Cllr Paul Baines was also appointed as Deputy Mayor. During the meeting the new look Cabinet at Charnwood was approved. Deborah has stepped down from her Cabinet role for Communities, Wellbeing and Safety, to take up a new position

at the County Council. Deborah remains as Chair of Charnwood Community Safety Partnership. Cllr Bailey and Cllr Rattray become new members of the Cabinet. The details of the new cabinet can be found here: https://charnwood.moderngov.co.uk/ mgCommitteeDetails.aspx?ID=137 Online Activities A virtual activity timetable will help families in Charnwood stay active this summer. The borough council’s Active Charnwood team has worked with partners to put together a six-week timetable of online activities as an alternative to its usual summer holiday programme. The timetable went live on Monday 13th July and includes a range of sessions for families to do at home including a daily challenge from Leicestershire Rutland Sport, love family fit with Tayplay, football skills with Leicester City Football Club and dance with Bhangra Fusion. There will also be resources and activity ideas for people to do in their own time throughout the six-week holiday. Most of the activities will be free but there is a small charge for some of the sessions offered by external providers. Organisations involved in the six-week virtual programme include Leicestershire Rutland Sport, Leicester City Football Club, Leicestershire County Cricket Club, Tayplay, Blue Wave, Bhangra Fusion, b-buddies, Shelthorpe Golf Academy, GSM Tennis Coaching and The Creation Station. To keep up to date with the timetable follow Active Charnwood on Twitter @ActiveCharnwood or like their Facebook page. www. facebook.com/activecharnwood Leisure Centres Charnwood Borough Council welcomed the Government’s recent announcement on the reopening of indoor gyms, leisure centres and swimming pools from 25th July 2020. The Loughborough, Soar Valley and South Charnwood leisure centres, which are operated on behalf of the Council by Fusion, have been closed since March due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Council are now carefully working through the guidance with Fusion on how and when it will be possible to safely reopen its leisure centres on a phased return. The guidance will change the way the centres operate and reduce their capacity, and this will require careful consideration and could have a financial impact on the Council. For the latest information and news about Council services please visit: www.charnwood.gov.uk/coronavirus Free Car Parking The borough council car parks in Loughborough are being made more Covid-19 secure. Charnwood Borough Council is installing contactless barriers and ticket machines at the Beehive Lane and Granby Street car parks. The Council had committed to supporting local businesses by keeping parking free in all council-owned car parks until the end of July, but the charges are now being reintroduced. The Council suspended parking charges in March when lockdown restrictions were brought in to make it easier for key workers to park. The Council is losing around £75,000 a month in lost parking income. This funding is used to maintain the car parks and contribute towards other services including maintaining the parks, street cleaning, enforcement, street furniture and environmental protection. These services have continued but income has dropped significantly.

Charnwood will continue to work with Love Loughborough, other partners, and businesses to lead the recovery of the borough. Updates Just a few updates on work remaining to be done in the village. The re-location of the bus stop from Leicester Road to Stadon Road has been added to the work program and the work will be carried out when it is safe to commence the work. Three new bollards on Bradgate Road outside the Post Office have also been added to the work program. These bollards will stop vehicles mounting the pavement where pedestrians cross the road, to park on the shop frontage, thereby protecting the safety of pedestrians. The double yellow lines on Albion Street will be refreshed and further enforcement patrols will be carried out in the area due to vehicles parking near the junction and blocking visibility. If you have any issues or concerns, we are here to help.

David Snartt Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate

T: 01530 244804 - E: cllr.david.snartt@charnwood.gov.uk Mayor Of Charnwood At a virtual Mayor Making ceremony during Charnwood Borough Council’s annual meeting on Monday 29th June, I was honoured to be appointed the 47th Mayor of the Borough of Charnwood. I will serve along side my wife Joan, who will be Mayoress during my term of office.

Until I understand more fully the impact this will have on near neighbours’ privacy, I have ‘called in’ this application to be determined by a planning committee. I also note that the Parish Council have strongly objected to this application along with several neighbours.

After representing the Forest Bradgate Council Ward for 17 years, I realise how important the role of Mayor is to the people of Charnwood. I will do my very best to uphold the excellent contribution past Mayors have given to this Borough.

Reception Open Charnwood Borough Council have opened its’ Customer Service Centre to customers with essential enquiries on an appointment only basis. Customers will be able to make appointments to visit the Council offices in Southfields Road, Loughborough by calling 01509 634560. Appointments with a customer advisor are available from Monday to Friday 8.30am until 4.30pm, closed one hour for lunch from 12.30pm. Customers will be given a 30 minute slot with an advisor.

In my acceptance speech I said ‘I believe this will be a challenging time not only for the Council, but for many residents during the coming year. I commit to help in any way I can’. I also announced that the charity appeal for my Mayoral year will contribute towards LOROS and Admiral Nurses. I know it will be a difficult time for charities. Therefore, I would be grateful for any help supporting these two charities. LOROS: A local hospice, caring for local people, who deliver free high quality, compassionate care and support to terminally ill patients, their families and carers. Admiral Nurses: This charity provides the specialist dementia support that families need when things get challenging or difficult. Giving expert practical and emotional care and support for family carers, as well as the person with dementia. Vehicle Parking I am grateful to the Newtown Linford Parish Council for the time they are taking to try and resolve the vehicle parking issues that exist in the village and the wider Parish. Both myself and County Councillor Deborah Taylor are working with the Parish Council to finalise an outcome that will be beneficial to residents.

Full details can be found on the Charnwood Borough Council’s website planning portal under planning application P/20/0829/2. I will keep you informed as this application progresses through the planning cycle.

Customers are urged to continue to use online services where possible. The Council website can be used to make payments, submit planning applications, apply for housing, manage your council tax and benefits and much more. Keep up to date on any service changes during the coronavirus pandemic by visiting www.charnwood.gov.uk/coronavirus. Activities Through The Summer Holidays Charnwood Borough Council’s Active Charnwood Team have worked with partners to put together a timetable of on-line activities as an alternative to its usual summer holiday programme. The timetable includes a range of sessions for families to do at home including a daily challenge from Leicestershire Rutland Sport and football skills with Leicester City Football Club. The timetable for the virtual programme will be shared across the Active Charnwood’s social media channels and information can be found on the Active Charnwood Alliance website. Although this timetable started during July it will be continuing through until Friday 21st August. You may also get more details about each activity by visiting www.charnwood.gov.uk/holidayprogrammes or call 01509 634561.

You may recall there was a good response to the Parish Traffic Survey, with just under 100 replies. The detail from the returns is guiding the interested parties to make the necessary changes to parking restrictions within the whole of the Parish boundary. You may also remember from the earlier public meeting in the Village Hall, the main outcome was to have a whole village solution to the current vehicle parking issues. Recent piecemeal parking restrictions have seen vehicles parking in other locations within the village. I am sure this will be guiding the final decision making process when the final proposals are made.

Leisure Centres Charnwood Borough Council welcomes the Government’s recent announcement on re-opening of indoor gyms, leisure centres and swimming pools from July 25th. The Loughborough, Soar Valley and South Charnwood leisure centres have been closed since March due to the pandemic. The Council will look to see how and when it will be possible to safely open its three leisure centres on a phased return. The guidance will change the way the centres operate and will reduce their capacity. For the latest information and news about Council services please visit www.charnwood. gov.uk/coronavirus.

Subject to finance being available, there will be a consultation on the proposals. In my view, it is important that people have their say, most importantly the residents who support the proposals in the consultation should also contribute to the final outcome. This may be a final chance to make a difference to secure the necessary changes to parking restrictions, which were indicated at the public meeting and in the survey returns.

Loughborough Car Parks I know residents within my Council Ward do make visits to Loughborough. Therefore, I thought you may be interested in detail about the Council owned car parks.

Planning Application A planning application has been received by Charnwood Borough Council proposing a two storey side and single storey front extensions, installation of rear dormers and a change to external materials at 11 Windmill Rise, Woodhouse Eaves.

8 | www.openboxpromotions.co.uk/news

Work is underway to make the Borough Council car parks in Loughborough more covid-19 secure. The Council are installing contactless barriers and ticket machines at Beehive Lane and Granby Street car parks. The Council has been supportive of business by keeping parking free in all Council owned car parks until the end of July, after which parking charges will be re-introduced.

Deborah Taylor County Councillor for Bradgate Division

T: 0116 2350126 - E: deborah.taylor@leics.gov.uk Leicester Area Lockdown I am sure you are all aware of the local area lockdown of Leicester City that included parts of the county that borders onto the city. Public Health England and local authorities had been trying to find the source of the out-break to try and look at a local lockdown. It was not possible to do this, as the virus had spread across the city, so the decision was taken to go into an area lockdown. The city, plus the part of the county that borders with the city, went into strict lockdown with non-essential shops closing and schools closing early for the summer. This is a very difficult situation and very fast moving and information is becoming out of date very quickly. Extensive testing has been conducted in the city, whether residents have symptoms or not. Oadby and Wigston still have very high rates of infection and testing has now been stepped up in the district and every resident is being encouraged to get tested, whether they have symptoms or not. The latest data available as I write this report are the weekly rates per 100,000 of population of positive cases: • Leicester: 126 cases per 100,000 of population • Leicestershire: 17 cases per 100,000 of population • Derby: 9 cases per 100,000 of population • Nottingham: 5 cases per 100,000 of population. As you can see, the county is certainly not out of the water yet and there is a risk of the infection spreading, so we all need to continue to be very careful, consider the risk to ourselves, and take the necessary action for our own family’s wellbeing. The mandatory wearing of face coverings in shops also comes into force on 24th July. There is a postcode checker on the LCC website to check what areas are within the lockdown area: https://public.tableau. com/views/Covid-19LocalLockdown-PostcodeChecker/ Postcodes?:language=en-GB&:display_count=y&:origin=viz_share_ link&:showVizHome=no# The lockdown area was reviewed on 16th July, and the majority of the county was removed from the lockdown zone, apart from Oadby and Wigston. The lockdown area will be reviewed before 1st August and possibly before you receive your copy of Your Local, so this information may well have changed before then when new data become available. School Admissions Applications for primary school places are now open. Parents and carers with children due to start at primary schools in Leicestershire in September 2021 can now apply for places at their preferred schools and have until 15th January 2021 to submit their applications. There is no automatic entry system for any specific school place in the county, so parents should ensure that they exercise their right to apply for three school preferences and are aware of the closing date. Late applications have the lowest priority at being processed after those made on time. More information about schools in Leicestershire and the application process can be found on our school admissions page. www.leicestershire.gov.uk/education-and-children/schools-collegesand-academies/school-admissions For further advice on your preferred schools and information around virtual open days, please contact the individual schools directly.

Cabinet Role At the annual meeting of the County Council on 8th July, I took over the role as Cabinet Lead Member for Children, Families, and Safer Communities. I have been the Cabinet support member for the previous Lead Member, Mr Ivan Ould CBE for the past 2 years, so I do have a good understanding of the department. Saying that, Mr Ould has been in the role since 1999, so he brought a great wealth of experience and knowledge to the role. It is difficult enough following in Mr Ould’s footsteps but made more difficult due to the current pandemic situation and it will take some time to adjust to my new role. I have therefore stepped down from my Cabinet role at Charnwood Borough Council as Lead Member for Communities, Wellbeing and Safety to devote more time to this role. Recycling Centres Six more sites will begin to re-open from later in July, starting at Bottesford on Thursday 30th July and sites at Kibworth and Coalville will re-open on Monday 3rd August and Tuesday 4th August respectively. Lutterworth's waste site will re-open from Friday 14th August, the Loughborough site from Saturday 15th August and Somerby from Sunday 16th August. Online bookings for all three sites will be made available from Friday 31st July. All sites require residents to book an appointment in advance to ensure the safety of site users and staff as social distancing is maintained. A booking system, which has been in operation for the sites already open, will help ensure queuing is kept to a minimum, and residents can safely use the sites without delay. Locations at Barwell, Lount, Market Harborough, Melton Mowbray, Mountsorrel, Oadby and Whetstone re-opened in mid-May. These sites will continue to be open for the extended period of seven days a week, with the Shepshed site continuing to open for five days a week, including weekends. These arrangements will be subject to change as more sites re-open. Bradgate Park Parking Work is continuing on the plan for a blanket ban on parking in the surrounding areas of Bradgate Park’s three entrances. This is a huge project and I am working closely with Newtown Linford, Cropston and Thurcaston and Anstey Parish Councils. We are sourcing funding for the project from a range of partners and we are just working through that at the moment. The plan is to go out for a full consultation on the proposed plan for 4 weeks and comments will be welcome from everyone that is likely to be affected. I will be encouraging all residents to submit a response whether that is in support of the plan or objections. We need to get a view from all residents as this will mean a huge change to parking within the local area. I am hoping to bring you more details in my report next month. Libraries Launch Click and Collect Service The County Council has announced details of the click and collect service which is available at some libraries from the beginning of July. In a first step towards resuming a normal service, library members now have the opportunity to request a selection of books and audiobooks from their local library. The service is available at 11 of Leicestershire’s 16 main libraries with some communitymanaged libraries also offering click and collect. Selections will be hand-picked by library staff based on customers’ preferences, including their favourite author or genre, which can be saved to aid future requests. The loan period for click and collect items will be four weeks. Hand sanitisers will be available at all sites and any returned items will be put in safe storage for 72 hours before being put back on the shelves. Library users will be able to request items using the form on the council’s website and a member

of the libraries team will be in contact to confirm a date and time for collection.

To place a click and collect request, visit: www.leicestershire.gov. uk/click-and-collect. Users who cannot complete an online form can request their selection by calling 0116 305 2695. Reservations via the library's online catalogue remain on hold until further notice. Warm Homes Fund Even though we are (hopefully) enjoying some summer weather the County Council is already planning for colder times ahead by working with E.ON and Age UK to help people across Leicestershire improve their heating. The work involves the installation of 500 first-time gas central heating systems in eligible residents’ homes following a successful funding bid by the County Council to the Warm Homes Fund. In addition to the first-time gas central heating, eligible residents may be able to receive free insulation measures for their homes and can also benefit from free energy efficiency advice and support on how to better manage their income from Age UK Leicester Shire and Rutland. Residents must meet certain criteria to be eligible - but they do not have to be an E.ON customer to benefit. This scheme aligns with the County Council’s aim to reduce excess winter deaths and ill-health caused by cold homes. Over the past two years, the Warm Homes Service, which is part of public health at County Hall, has provided more than 3,700 Leicestershire households with free, impartial advice to help them stay warm at home and keep their energy bills down. Many of these households have benefited from the support needed to switch energy supplier. In addition, over 1,900 referrals have been made to access grants, benefits, energy discounts and related services to help make heating homes more affordable, easier to manage and safe.

The Warm Homes service is available all year round, even during the summer months and switching to a cheaper energy tariff will save money at any time of the year. For Warm Homes advice, or to register your interest in the Warm Homes Fund offer, please call First Contact Plus on 0116 305 4286 or see the Warm Homes Fund website: www.leicestershire.gov.uk/healthand-wellbeing/seasonal-health/leicestershire-warm-homes-fund Part-Night Street Lighting The County Council has ended the temporary measure of switchingoff part-night street lighting an hour earlier at 11pm. This was activated when the Government introduced measures to tackle the spread of Covid-19 by closing hospitality and leisure facilities, as well as community-based events which greatly reduced night-time activity. From the middle of July, the County Council has reverted to the previous arrangements of switching off all part-night lighting at 12 midnight. The initiative of switching off the lights at 11pm is estimated to have saved 18,300 kWh of energy and 4.7 tonnes of carbon emissions. For more information, visit: www.leicestershire.gov.uk/roads-andtravel/road-maintenance/report-a-street-light-problem If you have any issues or concerns, I’m here to help.

Feelgood Farm Now At 85 Forest Gate, Anstey, LE7 7FJ Article by Alan Chapman

Moved from 1 Groby Road, now downsized and re-emerging. Feelgood Farm is a place for guided personal growth and wellbeing, especially through music, arts, books, nature, and creativity. Learn/teach/sense/experience, buy/swap/fix, etc., through a helpful network (be part of it too). • Growth/wellbeing especially in grief/suicide. • Music especially guitar/song-writing/singing. • Arts especially writing, language, books - and all sorts. • Nature especially local countryside and the garden, and what we can grow to eat and drink. • Creativity is anything you love to do, how we can make a better world, and show and share and help enable this for others. Feelgood Farm is an emerging model of a more local sustainable way to live and work, like we are evolved and designed to be. This grows into leadership, healing, arts, peace, and other ways to help people and planet. Guided growth is help for your own living and being: Joyfully and authentically. Purposefully and meaningfully. Powerfully and fearlessly. However you want to be. Have you been missing your annual local Open Gardens fix this year? No wandering around in the sunshine, or dodging the showers, tracking your progress on a map, judging where the best scones and tea will be, or planning the loo stops. Thurcaston and Cropston Open Gardeners are also extremely disappointed that they could not show off much hard work and some very beautiful gardens this year and miss the opportunity to raise money for Air Ambulance. So, gardeners have come up with the Lockdown Digital Alternative Open Gardens for Thurcaston and Cropston. Two different opportunities are on offer for you to enjoy in the comfort of your own home, and you can stay for as long as you like. Don’t Let Stress Get The Better Of You Article by Gary Trickett

During times of challenge it is important to focus on the things we are in control of. Keep an eye on your diet. When feeling stressed, it’s all too easy to grab a quick snack on the go when really our body is crying out for the nutrients it needs to help it cope with extra pressure. Wholegrain carbohydrates (brown bread, brown pasta) will give long-term energy without causing sugar highs and lows and cravings. Stimulants such as tea, coffee, refined sugar and alcohol can agitate the nervous system. It might be tempting to reach for a glass of red at the end of a long day, but this will only heighten your stress and impact on your sleep, possibly even your waistline. Chamomile, lemon verbena and green tea are more supportive of the nervous system. Do make sure you drink plenty of water, as it’s important you stay hydrated. As far as specific nutrients are concerned, B vitamins help to support the nervous system and vitamin C the adrenal glands (which help you to cope in times of stress and distress). The B vits are found naturally in potatoes, bananas, lentils, peppers, tempeh, beans and brewer’s yeast; and vitamin C is of course found in most fresh fruit and veg, including broccoli, kale, peppers, oranges and strawberries. Other essential nutrients include magnesium for the nervous system (think pumpkin seeds, Brazil nuts and spinach) and iron for energy (liver, sardines, figs and apricots). Herbals can also help. Passiflora has been used for centuries as a mild sedative and is particularly beneficial when mixed with other restorative herbs such as Avena sativa. Together they help to combat both the physical and mental symptoms of stress, helping to prolong sleep time, relieve muscle tension and alleviate mild anxiety. For further advice visit Gary and his team at Healthy Route, 18 Silver Street, Leicester or call 0116 253 9097.

Hough Mill, Swannington Mark Temple

It was in 1790 that a tower mill was built on St. George’s Hill, between Swannington and Pegg’s Green in an area which was originally part of Thringstone parish. Built by John Boultbee, Lord of the manor of Thringstone, it was acquired in 1791 by John Griffin for £50. In the 1870s the last of three generations of Griffins decided to move into other occupations. By 1874 the mill had been leased to James Kirby. In 1878 the mill and mill-house transferred (for £1,175) into the ownership to John Hough, Land Steward for Sir George Beaumont of Coleorton Hall. John Hough owned the mill up until his death in 1915. It is known that in the mill was still being used at the outbreak of war in 1914 for grinding animal feed (grist) by Walter Chester, John Hough’s son-in-law. It is very likely the sails were already defunct by this time and that just one pair of stones on the ground floor of the mill were being used; probably powered by an external oil engine. This work ceased by the mid-1920s. In 1940 most of the mill’s remaining ironwork was removed for the war effort. With a derelict cap structure letting in the weather, the rest of the mill’s timber-work was soon ravaged by rot and, once the main joists succumbed, all the floors collapsed leaving just a brick shell. During the 1980’s, North West Leicestershire District Council purchased the empty brick-shell of the mill from the hough family, agreeing to rename the mill, ‘Hough Mill.’ Swannington Heritage Trust bought the Mill on 23rd August 1994 spending several years planning restoration and fundraising as part of the Swannington Heritage scheme. Heritage Lottery Funding provided a grant in 1998 to start rebuilding the mill’s internal structure and a Grantscape restoration fund enabled the building and installation of a newly constructed fantail and windshaft in 2009. All the machinery and timberwork had to be made from scratch or scavenged from the derelict remains of other mills. In 2019 a generous donation from a local family enabled the trust to explore the possibility of re-installing sail-frames. Thanks to excellent work by millwrights, crane driver and cherrypicker operator both stocks and frames, made off-site, were installed in September 2019. The sight of sails on Hough Mill for the first time in almost 100 years is already having an impact on people in the local area. Unfortunately, the coronavirus pandemic has thwarted many of this year’s plans but we soon hope to be able to invite visitors to see all the work that has been down. A tremendous effort has been made by local volunteers over the past 25 years to rescue this wonderful old girl. Mill guide, Mark Temple, is hoping, once to present crisis is over, to offer talks on ‘Lost Leicestershire Windmills’ to local history groups to provide some funds for future projects at the mill. Anstey Parish Council Article by Liz Hawkes

Opening up of facilities in Anstey Playparks The parks at the recreation ground, Stadon Road, Millfield Playing Field and Long Close are all open. The Government Guidelines have been followed and risk assessments completed to allow this to happen. Those using the parks must consider their own health and safety when doing so and follow the guidance which appears on the signs at the park. This reminds people to social distance and wash hands frequently. Public Toilets The public toilets were vandalised on Sunday 5th of July and the doorways are currently boarded up. This is extremely disappointing that again the toilets have become a target for this type of anti-social behaviour. This comes at a cost to the whole community as repairing the damage caused will be paid for by money received from residents of Anstey through the Council Tax. If you have any information about this do get in touch and information will be forwarded to the police. We are expecting to have the doors replaced in the next few weeks and will then be in a position to open this facility. Jubilee Hall Government guidelines have allowed the opening of the Community Building. Currently it is not possible to meet the requirements whilst restoring the building as a place of work for all staff and Council meetings are still held remotely. There is a lot of information still required about how to comply with the requirements. The Jubilee Hall remains closed to the public. Community Support In last month’s report it was mentioned that it would be a priority of the Council to support the community of Anstey, where people have been affected as a direct result of the Coronavirus pandemic. Your views on where help is required are important and as of yet no responses have been received. Do get in touch if you have ideas on where problems have arisen and which people need support. Bradgate Park Parking As mentioned by County Councillor Deborah Taylor elsewhere in this publication, there is a consultation underway to reduce the problems of parking at Bradgate Park - particularly at Newtown Linford. The scheme looks to restrict opportunities for parking outside of the official Bradgate Park car park and there is a concern that parking will be displaced into Anstey. The proposal looks to have double yellow lines into Anstey along Bradgate Road. The consultation from the County Council will last for four weeks and it is important that you put forward your comments. Your can contact the Council in the following ways. By Post: Parish Office, Jubilee Hall, Stadon Road, Anstey, Leicester LE7 7AY Telephone: (0116) 236 2646 mobile: 07458 305025 Email: clerk@ansteypc.org Parish Council Meetings will be held on the following Tuesday evenings, 11th August, 1st September and 22nd September starting at 7.30 meetings are currently virtually via zoom the link to the meetings is advertised on the agenda which can be found on the councils website. www.ansteypc.org.uk/council-meetings.html all members of the public are welcome to these meetings.

Name That Bin Wagon!

Article by Charnwood Borough Council Young residents are being asked to name a new shining fleet of refuse and recycling vehicles which have started to arrive in Charnwood. Charnwood Borough Council’s current vehicles are being replaced with a new fleet of 41 new lorries, vans and road sweepers. Whether it’s Bin Diesel, Forrest Dump or Johnny Trash, local children are being asked to enter the Name That Wagon competition and submit their name suggestions. The more pun-tastic the better but remember to keep them clean! No pun intended and please no Binlorry McBinFace suggestions. Or if you want, put forward names of someone you know or who you think is special. Names will appear on the side of the 21 bin lorries and four road sweepers. The first vehicle has been named Florence, a dedication to the NHS heroes and key workers who are on the front line supporting the public during the coronavirus pandemic. The vehicle will also feature a large rainbow on the side along with a thank you message. The Council is investing around £4.8 million in a more efficient and safer fleet which will include the latest technology. The refuse lorries will have new in-cab technology to give the crews real-time information on operational issues as they carry out their rounds in the borough. A 360-degree camera system will also be installed on each lorry to provide additional safety of for staff members, other road users and members of the public, particularly cyclists and pedestrians. Four cameras will capture live recordings from the front, rear and sides of the vehicle. The view from the cameras will be displayed on the in-cab screen, giving drivers an improved view of potential cyclists and other road users to the rear of the lorry whilst reversing. The front facing camera also provides a wide-angle lens for a greater field of vision. An additional camera to the rear of the vehicle will focus on the main working area to provide extra protection for the crew. The vehicles which are being manufactured by Dennis Eagle will also be more environmentally friendly and contribute towards the Council’s target of becoming carbon neutral by 2030. The new fleet of lorries complies with the latest emissions’ standards and is expected to reduce the Council’s carbon footprint. The fleet will also include two Nissan electric vehicles and two hybrid vehicles from Ford. The four new road sweepers are being supplied by Johnston, a company which has been making sweepers for more than 75 years. The current fleet of bin lorries collects all refuse and recycling from the borough’s 75,000 homes as well as serving more than 30,000 customers of the Council’s garden waste service. The vehicles empty household bins around five million times a year. Entries for the Name That Wagon competition are now open and will close on Friday August 21, 2020. For more information and to enter please visit: www.charnwood.gov.uk/NameThatWagon The winners will be contacted by the Council directly and the new names will be revealed later in the summer.

Anstey Nomads

Article by Adam Etheridge 25 five years on from the Nomads best run in the FA Vase, there’s a familiar name that links todays Anstey side and the 1995/96 vintage. Corey Armeni made 30 appearances for the Nomads last season, scoring eight times from midfield, including the winner in the County Cup semi-final, but he’s not the only Armeni to contribute winning strikes in big cup ties. A quarter of a century ago, his father, Chris Armeni, was instrumental in that FA Vase run to the fifth round. “I still remember scoring that winner against Oldbury United” recalled Chris, “we’d fallen behind but managed to fight back and I grabbed a late one to send us through.” Whilst Chris, a former Notts County apprentice, was only with the Nomads for about six months, it was a great time to be involved. Joining the competition in the second qualifying round the Nomads eased past Radford 4-1 at Cropston Road. The home tie with Oldbury United was the reward for making the competition proper and Chris’ goal sent Anstey through as they defeated “The Blues” 2-1. The second round saw another home draw as the Nomads entertained local rivals Shepshed Dynamo. “We fell behind again” said Armeni, “but David Postlethwaite came off the bench and scored four in 15 minutes to turn it around on, what was, a boggy pitch.” After three straight home draws the Nomads endured three straight away ties. The third round offered a trip to County Durham where the Nomads came home with a 3-2 victory over Easington Colliery. The same scoreline saw Anstey victorious in Yorkshire as they overcame North Ferriby United in the fourth round. A trip south saw the impressive run end with a 6-0 defeat to London Spartan League side Collier Row but that fifth round performance remains the deepest that the club has gone in the competition. Chris went on to appear for Ibstock Welfare before moving to Sunday football as it was more enjoyable. However, his impact on Anstey football was far from over. “I’ve always known my Dad played football” said Corey “He used to tell me stories about when he played, which is something I love hearing about because things have seriously changed since then. When I first signed for the Nomads he’d said before that he was there for a short period, which is nice to know as it adds to the feeling that Anstey is my home. However, I never knew that he was part of a team that went on the best run the club has ever had in the Vase, but I’m sure we’ll top that in the coming years.”

“It was clear from a very young age that Corey was keen to play football” said proud Father Chris “He started at Sileby and came through with Benno (Jon Benson) before moving to Anstey. He plays midfield now, the same as I used to, but he’s a much better player than I ever was, and his fitness levels are something else.” “I knew from a young age I was always going to play football” recalled Corey. “My childhood revolved around football, anywhere we went I would take one. My family have always played a pivotal part in me playing football, my Nan, Grandad and especially my Mum, they used to take me to all my junior football matches home and away. “They still even come to watch now when we travel to all these away games, rain or shine I could never thank them enough for where they have helped me get to now.” Chris added “I get to see him play whenever I can, including travelling down to watch him for Barwell when they were away to Lowestoft. We made a weekend of it and stayed in Cromer whilst Corey spent four and a half hours on the coach getting back.” “It’s very beneficial having my Dad play a high level of football” Concluded Corey “when I’m not playing very well I can always go to him to get great advice as to what I can do to change something in my game or whether I need to stop overthinking things and stop trying so hard, which is at times what I do wrong. I’ve learnt there are ups and downs playing football and they are so far apart. When you’re on a winning streak and the team are playing well, we know that there is nothing that can stop us, which is an amazing feeling. But when you’re having a few bad games and the pressure’s on, it’s hard to pick yourself back up. But that’s why we love football.” With the season set to begin on Tuesday the 1st of September, The Nomads are currently scheduled to begin their FA Vase quest eighteen days later.
