Many people think of varicose veins as being a ‘female affliction’ and while pregnancy can be a contributing factor, many men are affected too, especially those with jobs that require them to spend hours at a time on their feet, or sat behind a desk. In addition to the veins themselves, legs can often feel tired and heavy and may be prone to swelling and cramping. In severe cases surgery is the sensible option, but if you take care of your legs before they get to such a serious stage, then less drastic treatments can go a long way.

Adopt an anti-inflammatory diet. Make sure you are getting plenty of fibre as constipation can make you more vulnerable to varicose veins. Eat plenty of fruit and veg and drink plenty of water to keep things moving. Certain herbs and spices are brilliant for tackling inflammation, with cinnamon, garlic, turmeric and cayenne pepper being excellent for supporting a healthy circulation. As far as herbal remedies are concerned, horse chestnut is often used to help with varicose veins. It is the seeds of the horse chestnut tree which are used medicinally and these are the same seeds gathered each autumn for the game of conkers. Try A.Vogel’s Venaforce Horse Chestnut tablets. To help reduce heavy legs and swelling, elevate your legs above the level of your heart for about 10 minutes each day. A simple way of achieving this is by lying down and resting your legs on a stack of pillows. You could also try rubbing Venagel Horse Chestnut Gel into tired legs. Smooth upwards and massage into legs. For further information visit Gary and his team at Healthy Route, 18 Silver Street, Leicester.

Snowy Owl’s Plant Stall For RSPCA In Cropston Article by Irene Marriott

At 66 Latimer Rd in Cropston I have a small plant stall selling mainly perennial plants and shrubs. Since the beginning of 2021, I had collected £68 for the RSPCA but expanded into a giant plant stall when my garden was one of the sixteen for visitors to view in the highly successful Thurcaston and Cropston Open Gardens weekend. Ruth and Sue from the RSPCA manned the sales table while I answered any queries from visitors. One lady was looking puzzled, ‘Can I help?’ ‘I’m looking for the Snowy Owl nest, this is Snowy Owl’s garden?’ she replied. I smiled as I explained that I was Snowy Owl (of Thurcaston Brownies). There was a nest, but a robin’s nest. People admired the enormous Bay lollipop trees, Yellow Gentian (Phlomis) and Red Lychnis plants in particular, looked for the Jolly Green Giant and admired the view across the fields to Thurcaston. The weekend was a lovely time, the weather was kind and everyone was glad to be out enjoying themselves, chatting to neighbours and friends that they had not seen because of Covid 19. We respected the advice for socially distancing, hand sanitizing, masks etc. After the Open Gardens, the money for the RSPCA increased to an amazing £448. and a little later, kind neighbours made a donation to increase the total to £470.

I would like to thank everyone who donated plant pots, named plants and yogurt pots and margarine tubs to cut up into plant labels. Also a big thank you to the fruit and veg shop, Whitfield’s, in Anstey for saving lots of blue plastic trays. The plant stall is still operating along my low garden wall so please carry on buying and bringing plant pots/yogurt pots as I have cuttings to grow and containers of Spring bulbs to plant. I have made new friends amongst the people (and their dogs) stopping to look at the plants. Many, many thanks everyone. Snowy Owl.

Report For Thurcaston Brownies Summer Term 2021 When we were able to resume face to face meetings with our Brownies we had some tasks of the interrupted Painting Badge and Camping Badge to finish. One of the pop up beach tents was believed to be in Mablethorpe but a search of the caravan was unsuccessful. However a beach side shop did have just one left, an ex display item from last season which was kindly given to us for free when the shopkeeper heard it was for the Brownies. He smiled too, perhaps he knew the ‘fun’ we would have trying to fold and twist the strong and springy plastic frame to get the tent back into its small bag!! The Brownies needed to learn about looking after tents; no muddy shoes inside, don’t trip over the guy ropes, do not touch the walls of your tent as this encourages rain to seep through. We pretended it was bedtime and had several races against the other Brownies to put on our PJs over our uniforms in the confined space of the tents. We had already done some cooking of savouries on small BBQ s but now it was time to learn how to start a fire with twigs and leaves, gradually working up to thicker pieces of dry wood. When the embers were hot enough we toasted lots of marshmallows. Next, how to put a fire out and safely dispose of the remains. At the end of April we started at The Wheatsheaf car park and in separate small groups went opposite ways around a square of roads in Thurcaston trying to find the answers to our exploration trail. Q. How much does the house with the red door cost? A. Penny (Cottage) Q. What animals are on the thatched roof? A. Chickens (made of straw). Back to the Painting Badge and the girls decorated empty wine bottles and inserted a small string of tiny fairy lights that were battery operated. These bottle -lamps set the atmosphere for our Mocktail Evening the following week. Mocktails are non alcoholic cocktails and the girls learned how to sugar coat the cocktail glasses, how to use a lemon squeezer and make delicious concoctions from the fruit, juices, ice and lemonade available. Cherries and tiny paper parasols were not compulsory but were a great hit. Before half term we learned the ‘One Stroke’ technique where two colours are loaded onto the opposite ends of a flat brush. We used this idea on miniature wooden bird houses and created swirl patterns of the two colours and the mixed colour where the paints merged. We returned after half term and danced around our Toadstool as part of the Enrolment Ceremony for our new Brownies then set to work colouring posters for the Thurcaston & Cropston Open Gardens. Our treasured helper, Pat, had been very busy as well as Barn Owl so that the Brownies could make Owls from pine cones, Piggy banks and Bees from plastic bottles, and bee cards for Father’s Day, The week end of June 26th, 27th saw the very successful T & C Open Gardens raising money for the Air Ambulance. With Brown Owl answering enquiries, the Brownie crafts were on display at Barn Owl’s garden in Thurcaston and my (Snowy Owl’s) garden was open in Cropston with a giant plant sale for the RSPCA. The following Wednesday we met on Station Rd in Cropston. We were in the capable hands of Matt and learned all about alpacas and took them for a walk in the field. ‘It tickles’ said one Brownie as an alpaca fed from her hand. ‘Best night ever’ said another as her Mum took her home. Do you remember the evening of July 7th. with heavy rain and thunderstorms? We had to cancel our proposed orienteering in Castle Hill park. For our final meeting we partied, played pass the parcel, parachute games, Fishes, Sharks and Seaweed, ate chocolates and biscuits and ended with the favourite game of hide and seek in the church yard as an older Brownie showed a new recruit the best places to hide. Sadly, several of our Brownies are now 10 +years old and moving on. So we do have spaces for new girls. Minimum age 7, and open to all girls, there is no requirement to live in Thurcaston or to attend the church. We meet on Wednesday Evenings in term time 6 - 7,15pm at the Harrison room, Thurcaston church. More details from Brown Owl, Louise Keran 07711-422350 but please avoid work hours. Snowy Owl.

Deborah Taylor Borough Councillor for Anstey

T: 0116 2350126 E: cllr.deborah.taylor@charnwood.gov.uk Planning Permission We have both continued to work on the planning application submitted by Callington Construction Ltd on Anstey Lane; looking into the issue of the number of large lorries travelling on Cropston Road also and whether or not they exceed the weight restrictions for the road and consequently break the law. We have received a response from the Local Highway Authority (LHA). They have reviewed all the information we sent to them and they have discussed it with their Traffic & Signals team who deal with weight restrictions. In this case, the issue of HGVs/large vehicles using Cropston Road (which is a weight restricted road to 7.5 tonnes) is not something which the LHA is reviewing at this time and they consider it a matter for the Police to enforce and address. However, we have since learned that HGVs are exempt in abiding by weight restrictions such as this one when they are accessing a site for the purposes of loading/unloading, when that site is within a weight restricted area. In relation to the planning application at Callington Construction Ltd, the LHA have reviewed the submitted trip information and considered the level of trips including HGV trips (2 two-way trips in both the AM/PM peak period and 16 daily trips) cannot be considered to have a severe impact on the public highway network and thereby warrant a reason for refusal. We have also spoken to the Police Commander for Charnwood to ask for his support in the enforcement of the weight limits on Cropston Road. The Inspector has confirmed that they will enforce the law when they are able to, but in this case the police are unable to enforce the weight restriction as the vehicles have an exemption given that they are loading and unloading at the site. At the same time, he acknowledged the impact on residents from the noise and on the impact on the environment from the weight of the vehicles. Nevertheless, what drivers are doing is lawful. We have had a number of people contact us to say they believe that wide-load lorries are forcing cars approaching from the other end of Cropston Road onto the kerb, and therefore causing obstruction as well as being a hazard to pedestrians. If anyone has any footage of such incidents, please do send them through to either or both of us. This will allow us to look into this further. We are both continuing to push the planning authority to make a decision on this application and we’ll update you in due course. Cropston Road Burglaries We have been supporting residents from the Cropston Road end of the villages after a spate of burglaries and attempted burglaries. It has been a very unsettling period for residents in that area. We requested that the streetlights were turned back on all night to aid residents to see clearly outside overnight. This did happen though not as speedily as we would have liked. Streetlights numbers 15 to 31 have been switched on all night for a period of 3 months, this happened on the 12th July. After 3 months, a review will be undertaken with the police and they may then be converted back to part night operation if they are no longer required to be lit all night. We urged the police to carry out some reassurance work in the area and to ensure that residents have support to make their properties as secure as possible. We also requested that the police carry out additional patrols overnight in the area and we were assured that was happening. The patrols have been carried out in marked and in unmarked police cars. Patrols on foot were also carried out, during the day and night. We welcomed the setting up of a WhatsApp group for residents in the area and the start of a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme. We are always stronger when working together. The police have provided updates to us and they are working hard in the background to catch the perpetrators. We are unable to share that current activity with you, but we wanted to reassure residents that police work is ongoing. We are hopeful that all the measures that have been put in place have sent a strong message to would-be burglars that Anstey is on high alert and that they will be caught. Please continue to report incidents to the police on 101 or via 999 if your report concerns a burglary that is happening at the time of your call. Your Store A social supermarket is being launched in Charnwood to help people access affordable shopping and support. ‘Your Store’ is being created by a partnership involving Charnwood Borough Council, John Storer Charnwood,

Located at John Storer House in Loughborough, ‘Your Store’ will help people currently using foodbanks become more independent by offering food at discounted prices. Support will also be offered across a wide range of areas including mental health, debt advice and budgeting. Customers will initially be identified by the Charnwood Food Poverty Group and ‘Your Store’ is aiming to open its doors to its first customers in August. Each ‘Your Store’ membership will give the member access to two weekly shops at ‘Your Store’. Each shop will be made up of a range of food items and will cost from £3, this will be around a quarter of the cost in a typical supermarket. Members will also be able to buy additional items such as cleaning, personal hygiene, and baby products. The store in Loughborough is a pilot scheme for a year and it is hoped ‘Your Store’ will become self-sustaining over time through income from members shopping there, sponsorship and donations. Alongside the shop at John Storer House there are plans for a number of weekly pop-up versions across the borough. Mountsorrel will be the first pop-up ‘Your Store’, which is being supported by Mountsorrel United Charities Relief in Need Fund. ‘Your Store’ aims to help around 300 households during the pilot project. www.charnwood.gov.uk/news/2021/07/14/social_supermarket_to_offer_ affordable_shopping_to_people_in_need Charnwood Local Plan Charnwood Borough Council has launched a six-week consultation about its new Local Plan and vision for the area over the next 16 years. The consultation runs from 12th July 2021 to 23rd August 2021. This public consultation will enable residents, businesses and other interested parties to submit comments about the ‘soundness’ of the local plan. The Local Plan is a key strategic framework for supporting future growth and developing healthy communities and environmental safeguards. It guides development and identifies locations for housing and employment land. The Local Plan also considers the impacts of climate change, infrastructure needs and protection of green spaces. The purpose of the consultation is for interested parties to comment on the ‘soundness’ of the Local Plan in meeting standards set out in the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF). Representations will be collected by the Council and submitted to Government alongside the Local Plan. A Planning Inspector will then be appointed to consider the documents during a public examination. Guidance on ‘soundness’ and how to make effective representations is available on the website along with some frequently asked questions. The Council has provided a host of information about the Local Plan on its website, including a set of frequently asked questions. In addition, the Council will also be holding two virtual briefings for people to attend. To find out more about the Local Plan, make your comments during the consultation and sign up to the briefings, please visit www.charnwood.gov. uk/localplan You can also email localplans@charnwood.gov.uk or call the Local Plan Team on 01509 634929 to find out more about how to have your say if you do not have access to the internet. Hard copies of the documents are available for viewing at the Council Offices at Southfield Road in Loughborough. Visitors will require a pre-booked appointment. Please call 01509 634 560 to arrange a time for viewing. We have submitted a more detailed report in this edition of ‘Your Local’ on how this affects Anstey and our thoughts and responses to the Local Plan. Online Forms Charnwood Borough Council has a large number of online forms that customers can access 24/7. Mayoral Activity The Mayor’s charities for this year are Marie Curie (caring for people with terminal illnesses) and Living Without Abuse (a local domestic abuse charity). On July 24th, I'll be taking part in the Marie Curie 'trek' of 26.2m in the Peak District with the Mayoress Ning Baines, Cllr Deborah Taylor, Laura Knights and Karen Widdowson (both officers from Charnwood Borough Council). At the time of sending in our report to ‘Your Local’, we will be days away from setting off on our charity walk. Our training has been going well: we walked the 17 odd miles from Leicester Abbey Park to Loughborough Train station along the canal tow-path last Sunday in 31°C heat and completed it in 6 hours 45 minutes including a short lunch break. At the time of writing, we have nearly hit our team target of £2,000 for Marie Curie. There is still time to sponsor us though as we would like to go well above and beyond our target! All the details are on our Just Giving website here: https://www.justgiving.com/team/charnwoodmayor. Just to put

it all in context, one hour of nursing care in someone’s home costs Marie Curie £20. Please do therefore consider giving no matter how small the amount as even little donations help! Photos and a summary of the day will be shared in our report, next month. We are now in the process of organising tables for the Living Without Abuse Winter Ball on Saturday 4th December at 7pm at the Leicester Marriott. The early bird price is a very reasonable £40 for a 3-course meal with a drink on entry at the present time. If you wish to attend, and support the Mayor and this excellent charity, please visit the following website for further details: https://lwa.enthuse.com/cf/lwa-winter-ball. If you have any questions about the Ball, please email fundraising@lwa.org.uk. If you wish to organise a table of up to 10 people, say for a sports or hobby group you are a part of, and have all the details of the people who want to attend, please email Carol Hardy at Charnwood Borough Council on mayor@charnwood.gov.uk with your request and we will be able to arrange your table for you. Mayoral events are now starting up a bit more than in the past months. In the last couple of weeks, we've opened a charity run, a new Hobbycraft Store, painted the eyes on a new dragon boat, attended various Loughborough University events, supported Armed Forces Day, recognised a retiring market stall-holder, attended the Annual General Inspection at Welbeck in its final, closing year, and much more. You can engage, follow and share Charnwood’s Mayoral events as they happen on Facebook; please search for ‘Charnwood Mayor’. Many thanks for taking the time to read this circular. We do hope that you have found it useful. In the meantime, although we are now freer of restrictions than we were, it doesn’t mean that the health risks from Covid have gone. We therefore urge everyone to continue to be considerate of others especially the vulnerable, to continue to wear your masks in crowded places and, above all, to stay safe. Deborah and Paul

Cllr Baines and Cllr Taylor will be holding an open-air public meeting on 4th August 2021 between 5.30pm and 7.00pm. We will be on the recreation ground, behind the Parish Office. We welcome residents that would like to come and discuss the proposed Charnwood Local Plan with us Charnwood Local Plan The Charnwood’s Local Plan is now out for public consultation. You can access the plan and submit your comments here: https://www.charnwood.gov. uk/pages/charnwood_local_ plan_2021_37 The consultation is open until 5pm on 23rd August 2021. There are four sites identified within Anstey and this proposed plan adds up to an additional 937 dwellings. Some of these sites already have planning applications submitted. This includes 30 houses for area HA13 and 220 houses (of the proposed 600) for area HA43. Area HA43 will include the building of a new primary school. The four sites are marked on the map below in orange and we have included the housing numbers for each of the identified possible development sites. • HA12 - Land at Gynsill Lane and Anstey Lane, Glenfield, 260 homes • HA13 - Park View Nursery Site, off Gynsill Lane, Glenfield, 30 homes • HA43 - Land west of Anstey, Anstey, 600 homes • HA44 - Fairhaven Farm, Anstey, 47 homes The Local Plan was presented to the Full Council in June 2021 and the council agreed to go out to public consultation. At the meeting in June, both Cllr Baines and Cllr Taylor abstained from the vote as we cannot support such large development within Anstey with no guarantee of substantial new infrastructure being built. However, now the Local Plan has gone out for consultation, we think it is fundamental that residents now have their say on the plan. We raised the following points at the council meeting held in June: • Anstey has already taken a large amount of housing as one of Charnwood’s service centres. • The Nook alterations from the previous 250+ houses over the last 2 years has given rise to a substantial flow of traffic onto Cropston Road, with

8 | www.openboxpromotions.co.uk/news

queues at all times of the day, not just at peak times. • Putting more housing on Groby Road will send traffic into The Nook along Bradgate Road, which will affect the Cropston Road arm of the roundabout further, causing even more queuing in that area. • Increasing pressure on our services: doctors, dentist, chemist, and so on. Yes, they could expand, but the car parks are at capacity as it is. • There are far fewer buses serving the area than previously and if money is secured from developers for a bus stop, it will only be funded for 5 years and then we would have to revert to car use. • We have now lost our final banking organisation within the village. • There is one way in and one way out of Anstey (different to other service centres, where multiple exits exist). Anstey cannot cope with further development. • Anstey is used to access other rural villages. • Anstey is a village and is fast becoming an urban centre. Anstey residents wish the area to remain a village. Anstey is the gateway to Charnwood Forest and needs to retain its rural and village feel and not be subjected to unsustainable growth. • We have the Ashton Green development being built out in the city and that will have a knock-on effect for traffic congestion (Cropston Road end again). • Leicester City also have plans to develop just behind Thurcaston; this will have a major impact on Anstey. Some of the above could be mitigated by opening up the existing A50 junction to allow another ‘in and out’ of Anstey. This could be a partial solution but would still push traffic to the junction of Bradgate Road/Groby Road, which is a blind junction. We believe the Local Plan as it stands and in relation to Anstey proposes unsustainable growth. We believe Anstey is full and cannot take the 900 plus houses proposed in this Local Plan. We would urge all residents to respond to the Local Plan public consultation and share their thoughts and comments in response to what we believe to be unsustainable planned growth for Anstey. You can find out more about the consultation process and how to share your comments to the Planning Inspector online or offline here: https://bit.ly/3zjVS32. Please do take the time to read the Local Plan and to respond accordingly. Cllr Paul Baines and Cllr Deborah Taylor Ward Members for Anstey Charnwood Borough Council

Deborah Taylor

County Councillor for Bradgate Division T: 0116 2350126 E: deborah.taylor@leics.gov.uk It’s nice to get back to some semblance of ‘normal’. I am starting to attend more meetings in Council offices and social events. The Covid-19 restrictions were lifted on 19th July. I know that for many people it will be a huge relief. I would however ask that you continue to take care. The virus has not disappeared, and the infections rates are increasing very quickly. We have not seen a huge rise in hospital admissions yet, but that could change over the coming weeks. Please take up the offer of the vaccine, if you have not done so already, and ensure that you attend your second jab. I will continue to observe social distancing, limit the number of people I have contact with, and continue to wear my face covering when inside crowded places and on public transport. You can still catch and pass on the virus, even if you have received both of your vaccinations, and we are still seeing a huge number of people suffering with long Covid. It’s been a busy month for sporting events. Following the disappointment of losing in the final of the Euros to Italy, I was further disappointed with the racial abuse that followed, directed to some of the England team. Abuse of any kind is not acceptable, and I think our team did us proud. I have also been glued to the Wimbledon highlights and really enjoyed this year’s championships with spectators back at capacity for the finals. I was delighted to be invited to the Anstey WI’s annual garden party. It was a beautiful afternoon and it was a great to have a catch up with all the lovely ladies after so long. It was a great event, I won the raffle, ate cake and even had a game of lawn croquet. I was very happy to be voted in as Chair of the Police and Crime Panel for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. The panel’s role is to hold the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) to account. We have a new PCC in place, Rupert Matthews, and I look forward to working with Rupert and the panel over the next year. I deputised for the Leader of the County Council, at a campaign launch for ‘Uncover the Story’, held at the King Richard III Visitor Centre on Wednesday 21st July. The joint campaign, with Leicester City, is to promote Leicester and Leicestershire’s tourism offer to national and international visitors. It will explore the unusual and fascinating stories that lie behind some of our local attractions and unique places, using eye-catching artwork and ‘teasers’ to encourage the visitor to uncover the full story. It is hoped that the campaign will support the city and county tourism businesses such as visitor attractions, accommodation providers, museums, food and drink producers, restaurants, bars and cafes, market towns, cultural attractions, and festivals and events. Further details can be found here: www. visitleicester.info/uncoverthestory We are now heading into the summer recess, with a reduction in meetings. I am hoping to take some time away from the day job. I have worked continually since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020, as have a lot of people, and I need to switch the laptops off for a week or two and take some time out, ready for the September return.

logged, so we have some idea of the volumes being collected. There is an organised litter pick once a month, so if you are interested please get in touch. Please search for Anstey and Cropston Litter Wombles on Facebook. The group now has over 70 members. This is a fantastic achievement with the sole aim of keeping our local streets and paths tidy. Please help us by not dropping litter and taking it home with you. Recycling Centres From Monday 19th July, no appointments will be necessary to visit a county council recycling and household waste site in Leicestershire. However, vans, pick-ups and cars with trailers must have a waste permit to visit a waste site. Permits are also required for any vehicle bringing in asbestos, chemicals or liquid paint. I know some residents liked the booking system, but the majority didn’t. The amount of complaints that have come into the contact centre have been huge. All complaints are responded to and this takes up a lot of time and resources. Therefore, the decision was taken to remove the booking system as soon as it was safe to do so. Cycling and Walking Plans to boost cycling and walking by creating more networks, revamping routes and teaming up with schools and workplaces have been unveiled. The County Council’s ambition to improve the cycling and walking network across Leicestershire is outlined in a recent cabinet report. This followed a consultation which attracted more than 2,400 responses with the feedback being discussed by Cabinet members at their meeting on 20th July. They gave the green light to the cycling and walking strategy (CaWS) and an accompanying action plan. The CaWS sets out a vision to upgrade and provide cycle routes, cycle parking, and pedestrian facilities to create healthy streets and spaces. It will also include the provision of traffic education measures and cycle training for schools and workplaces to increase the number of cyclists and walkers. The initial target over 10 years is to increase cycle and walking trips to schools and employment by 10% and a rise in walking and cycling trips in the county by 15%. It is hoped that the CaWS will provide the evidence base behind future plans to improve pavements and cycleways, as well as supporting funding bids to Government. Following Cabinet approval, action will be taken now to develop a number of local, county-wide plans to improve cycling and walking infrastructure. Following a study to identify priority areas, the next areas will be Loughborough and the south-east quadrant of the Leicester Principal Urban Area, which includes Oadby, Wigston and Blaby. More details will be provided as the action plan is developed. Highway Fund Leicestershire Matters magazine has been delivered across the county over the past few weeks. You will have seen the front page, sharing details about a £5m boost of money for roads. This includes a fund of £25k for each county councillor to spend across their areas on low level highways and environmental improvements. I have been in contact with all my Parish Clerks, asking asked them to speak to residents and their councillors so that they can come up with proposals for consideration as to where the funding could best be used.

Womblers The womblers had a fantastic litter pick on Sunday 27th June 2021. Thank you to everyone who turned up on the day. Many of the group also continue to have ‘solo wombles’ around the area, daily. All the litter collected is

I am keen to hear from residents but would like to do this in a structured way. Therefore, I am requesting that if any residents have any ideas/plans/ projects that could improve the lives of residents and our local area, please do contact your local parish council in the first instance. They will then forward me the ‘wish list’ for the area which I can then take forward, working with highway officers. I will look at all ideas, get some prices, ensure they are safe (in highway terms) and then begin to take some forward. Matched funding can also be used to fund larger projects. If you have any issues or concerns, I’m here to help. Deborah

Thurcaston and Cropston Open Gardens June 2021 Update

Thurcaston & Cropston Parish Council New Website

The Open Gardens weekend was back after taking a year out in 2020 due to the Coronavirus, with gardens open for visitors to enjoy again. Over 600 people enjoyed visiting the many colourful and interesting gardens on show at the end of June.

The feedback from visitors was exceptionally good. People were so pleased and grateful for the opportunity to get out and enjoy the event, with no need to book in advance.

• change colours, contrast levels and fonts • zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

Article by Richard Elks

The organising team devised a ‘traffic light’ system to allow for safe entry to gardens in case of too many visitors. Some garden owners found the system very helpful in managing how many people were in their garden at any one time. As well as enjoying the gardens, visitors were able to buy plants, books, cakes, ice cream, and other refreshments. Over £3600 was raised for the local Air Ambulance from the garden entry fee. This was a record amount raised! So, visitors, thank you for coming. We loved having you and sharing our gardens with you. We hope you gained some ideas from the gardens you visited. See you all next year. Please bring a friend. And, if you were inspired by this year’s gardens and feel you might be interested in opening yours, please get in touch: linda@tcog.org.uk We hope you enjoy these pics taken at the weekend.

John Sutherington Sporting Award Congratulations to Sheryl Heath for being awarded the John Sutherington Sporting Achievement Award for 2021. Sheryl is a fitness instructor who was unable to continue her work throughout the Covid-19 lockdown. She started ‘Fitness on the Green’ classes to support her clients and residents of Anstey with their physical and mental wellbeing during the lockdown. Sheryl received several nominations for the award from residents who have clearly benefited from her classes: “All the way through the various lockdowns Sheryl has adapted her classes to accommodate the ever changing rules set out by the government, starting with socially distanced outside exercise, keeping to strict numbers, and then when the lockdown rules changed she moved to zoom classes offering online fitness in your kitchen. And now as the rules are gradually being relaxed again we have now moved back outside for fitness on the green once more”. “Physical fitness is more important than ever and plenty is known about the link between exercise and good mental health. Sheryl’s classes are a real boost to so many people – to get outside and be encouraged to get our heart rate up, and our muscles moving – has helped a lot of people get through the pandemic. We’re coming out the other side mentally and physically fitter and with a spring in our step!” “Without these classes I would have done nothing! It's kept me going through lockdown, her enthusiasm and can do attitude has made it so much easier to get off the settee and join in! It’s been a life saver for my mental health and wellbeing” Sheryl was presented with a trophy and a cheque for £250.00 by Councillor Vicky Ball on Saturday 3rd July 2021 at the end of one of her fitness classes. Parish Council Meeting will be held on the first Tuesday of the month starting at 7.30pm. Details of meeting are shown on the website, the agendas for meetings are published on the website at; www.ansteypc.org.uk/council-meetings.html all members of the public are welcome to these meetings.

David Snartt Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate T: 01530 244804 E: cllr.david.snartt@charnwood.gov.uk

Launch of Charnwood Local Plan 2021-37 Consultation. In my view, this is a most important document which will have far reaching consequences for local communities. I would be grateful for residents to take time to read through the Local Plan information and make their representations to Charnwood Borough Council before the closing date of the consultation on the 23rd August 2021. You can visit the Council’s website and view the pre-submission draft of the Charnwood Local Plan 2021-37, read all the related documents, before having your say on the Plan. Charnwood Borough Council have launched a six-week consultation about its new plan and vision for the area over the next 16 years. Public consultation will enable residents, businesses and other interested parties to submit comments about the ‘soundness’ of the Local Plan, ahead of its planned submission to Government. The Council states ‘the local plan is a key strategic framework for supporting future growth and developing healthy communities and environmental safeguards. It guides development and identifies locations for housing and employment land. The Local Plan also considers the impacts of climate change, infrastructure needs and protection of green spaces’. The purpose of the public consultation is for interested parties to comment on the ‘soundness’ of the Local Plan in meeting standards set out in the National Planning Policy Framework. Representations will be collected by the Council and submitted to Government alongside the Local Plan. A Planning Inspector will then be appointed to consider the documents during public examination. Guidance on ‘soundness’ and how to make effective representations is available on the Charnwood Borough Council’s website, along with some frequently asked questions.

However, the Hearing will be focussed on a few specific areas where the Inspector feels questioning is necessary to clarify or explain matters. In my view, it would have been good to have the Hearing again in the Village Hall, which was the case for the last appeal for this site. I am hopeful that the Inspector will be able to understand the real concerns local residents have about this development in this sensitive area of Charnwood Forest and the impact this will have on village life. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Neighbourhood Plan Team in getting the Plan to the examination stage, I believe this will be a part of the decision making process, and the Parish Council who have again appointed the same solicitor to represent them at the Hearing. Children’s Cookie and Cake Competition. Bake and decorate a biscuit, cookie or cupcake and be part of the competition inspired by Loughborough Markets and Fairs to celebrate their 800 year anniversary. The winning design will be entered into the 800-year book project. The design of the biscuit, cookie or cupcake should relate to the market or fair, some examples might be, a fairground ride, the Town Hall or market stall. The entries will be displayed on a market stall for public viewing throughout the day on Saturday August 14th 2021, 10.00am until 2.00pm. Bring your entry on the day to Loughborough Market Place in front of the Town Hall. Sign up to enter at www.charnwood.gov.uk/ccookie_and_cake_competition The competition is open to children 12 years of age and under. If you need to contact me on any issues, please write to 10 Groby Lane, Newtown Linford, Leicester, LE6.0HH e-mail cllr.david.snartt@charnwood. gov.uk or telephone 01530 244804

At the Full Council meeting where Councillors agreed that the Local Plan 2021-37 should go out for public consultation, I spoke of my concerns and asked for further information about two areas of the Local Plan. Therefore, I abstained when the vote was taken, I need to understand more fully the impact this will have on the Forest Bradgate Ward I represent at the Council. I need more information about a site, which is supported in the Plan (HA15). This is designated as land South of Loughborough for 723 homes. I needed to know how this site was selected as it encroaches into Woodhouse Parish, part of my Forest Bradgate Ward, and the designated area of Charnwood Forest. This site is also on productive farmland and without more detailed information, in my opinion, risks the integrity of nearby ancient woodland. I also need to understand more about the proposal to deliver 647 homes within the Anstey Parish, which, in my opinion, will also have consequences for the surrounding villages that rely on Anstey as their Service Centre. I note that there has been an increase of 21% in the number of dwellings in the current plan period. With the proposed new allocation of 647 dwellings this would be a further 18.4%. I am interested to know how this fits with the Strategic Growth Plan, which states: ‘Shifting the Focus of Development: To date the majority of new housing has been built on small and medium sized sites in market towns, villages and rural areas, some communities feel overwhelmed by the speed and scale of change’. Talking to local residents they believe this is the case within the village of Anstey, which has already seen a large number of homes built, changing the whole perception of village life to a more suburban environment, without the necessary infrastructure, which includes services and highway vehicle capacity. Maplewell Road, Woodhouse Eaves, Planning Appeal. I was pleased to receive information from the Planning Inspectorate about the decision by the Inspector to conduct a virtual Hearing taking place on 28th July 2021. I have been corresponding with the Inspectorate about changing this appeal from written representations to a Hearing because of the public interest when this planning application was decided by Charnwood Borough Council. I was told the Inspector would keep the appropriate procedure under constant review throughout the appeal process. Having now read the file in detail and visited the site, he finds he has some questions he would wish to raise with the parties, and now considers a Hearing would be justified.

Another Stunning Victory Anstey Rugby Article by Chris Apperley

Anstey RFC followed up their wins at Vipers and Aylestone Athletic with a Home 71-10 win against the Nottinghamshire side, Mellish. Thanks go to our friends at Old Newtonians In Leicester Forest East who allowed us use of their pitch and facilities as we were unable to use Martin High next to our Link Road ground due to Covid problems. It was an outstanding performance from our team with multiple try scorers and fantastic defence with some incredible tackles against the Mellish team who never gave up.

Thurcaston & Cropston Local History Society Article by Peter Smith

For our July event we were once more able to meet in person to explore the neighbouring village of Swithland. Our chair, Anne Horton, had prepared a “treasure trail” with a series of 20 questions that drew our attention to some of the many listed buildings and other interesting features of the village. After a brief detour to see the station-that-might-have-been, we gathered in the churchyard, where Anne was very much at home, having been Rector of the parish for many years. Many of the graves to be seen there are carved from the famous Swithland slate so they are extremely well preserved. They range from the elaborate tomb of Sir John Danvers to two modest but very early headstones from 1673. A campaign by parishioners successfully resulted in the medieval font being returned from Scotland and it now stands close to the East Door. Anne also arranged for us to visit the historic Hall Farm, where we peeked inside one of the two 18th century barns and admired its timber roof. The remainder of the trail followed Main Street, where the village school and many of the old cottages were built or restored by the Danvers family of Swithland Hall. A heraldic symbol of the family was the wyvern – a kind of dragon without hind legs – and its image can be seen in various places. The Wyvern was also the original name of the village pub but through time it became corrupted to the Griffin Inn. We ended our tour at the war memorial and the adjoining Memorial Hall, where a plaque was placed in the year 2000 to commemorate the many generations of local people who worked in the slate industry. Our final summer outing will be a visit to Grace Dieu Priory on the evening of 18th August. We hope to resume indoor meetings from September but please check our website for updates. www.thurcastoncropstonhistory.org.uk

Our first friendly (non league) games will start towards the end of August with pre-season Wednesday night training starting the second week of the month. The Anstey WI Garden Party Article by Anne Spanswick

What an afternoon! As the temperature soared to the high twenties, the ladies of Anstey WI celebrated their 80th Anniversary at a Garden Party amongst new and old friends. They cooled down with Pimm’s Cocktails with ice, supplemented with tea and coffee. They raised nearly £40 in total by a raffle, with donated gifts from the Ladies. The proceeds are to be sent to the Air Ambulance and the Anstey Library. Over the winter, the ladies were recognised for their hard work for the local community, and won a Charnwood Community Heroes prize of chocolate. These were graciously shared at the event as prizes for the games played. Fortunately they kept their form, despite the weather! The Ladies showed a competitive spirit playing croquet. As seen in the photo, Beryl took her strike, looked on by Debbie, Sheila and June, as Kay retrieves her ball amongst the rough! Fun and games were had playing Jenger and other garden games, sharing their stories and catching up with their exploits, over lockdown. They look forward to meeting you all at the Anstey Gala on the 4th September 2021, with their famous doggy biscuits, cakes and crafts for the children and adults alike!

The cricket club have been trying to encourage youngsters to take part in cricket and have engaged in the All Stars cricket programme. This involved coaching youngsters between the ages of 5 and 8 years old the basics of cricket over an 8-week period. This was highly successful with several children taking part and the feedback from them has been fantastic. The club will be looking to continue this in the future and encouraging more young players to take part in cricket and hopefully some of them will be able to represent the club in the coming years. The club would like to acknowledge the support of Blaby District Council as they have awarded the club a grant to help with the purchase of a new cricket batting net which should help the members gain some valuable batting practice this season and hopefully in the years ahead. If you are interested in joining the club, please email our secretary Amanda Wilkes. Amanda’s email address is amandaandcharlie@ btinternet.com. We are also now hosting training sessions at the Gynsill Lane ground on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5.30pm, so if you are interested in playing for the club, why not come down and practice. Please also visit our website at http:// ansteyandglenfield. play-cricket.com and Facebook page for regular updates, results and news throughout the season.
