Our Speaker for the November meeting of the Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club gave us his own take on “a little bit of everything.” Joe Whitehead, the Head Gardener at Burghley House shared some of his personal history; some of his passion for walled kitchen gardens, and some of the current work plans and future plans for developing the gardens at Burghley. Joe comes from a long line of gardeners; and is the third generation of his family to hold a head gardener position. He showed us vintage photos of his grandfather and great grandfather in their smart shirts, tie, and waistcoats. The journey of a Victorian gardener, from pot boy filling the watering cans and washing the pots, through apprenticeship, journeyman gardener, traveling from garden-to-garden learning new skills to the final stages of foreman and finally to head gardener. Today’s head gardeners are more likely to have gained formal RHS qualifications as well as gaining experience in many different gardens. One of Joe’s key interests is the walled kitchen garden. Throughout his career so far, he has been involved in the restoration and development of several of these much loved and historic features.
The Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club plans to have a full programme of events for 2022. For more information, and for a copy of our eyecatching poster, please contact Dave Haddon (0116) 235 9758: david.haddon20@ntlworld.com Or Richard Elks (0116 236 8313): cropston161@hotmail.co.uk
Initially designed just as sheltered growing areas surrounded by walls, it quickly because apparent that each of the walls could support different aspects of growing. South walls retain heat during the day and release it at night, giving the perfect conditions for ripening peaches and apricots. North walls provided summer shade to prevent vegetables from bolting. Joe talked about the huge numbers of gardening staff; no wonder that the vast numbers required to maintain these vast estates were so devasted by the two world wars. In Joe’s current post he leads a team of nine gardeners, working to restore and redevelop the gardens at Burghley. For the last four years Joe and his team have been working to establish streams with locally quarried stone, areas of rewilding and wildflower meadows together with the thousands of roses bushes. Joe finished his talk by describing some the ambitious plans that are in place for future years at Burghley, a re-developed Victorian water garden, new perennial borders

Protecting Your Family Inheritance Article by Klara Hesling
Our frontline staff follow Government guidelines for visiting you in your home and they are in the vaccination program with second course completed. LevLaw Ltd remains here for you. Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually. But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT).
Barrie Stephen Hair Celebrates An Incredible 25 Years Of Bringing Red Carpet Ready Style To Leicestershire Article by Barrie Stephen Critics told him that big city trends wouldn’t work in the sleepy village of Anstey, but Barrie Stephen defied all expectations by creating a luxury brand that has supported the regeneration of the area. Subsequently he has opened a further three salons and a collaborative barbershop across the city and county in his quartercentury success story.
A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased’s share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children’s inheritance is protected. This last point can be particular interest to couples who have come together and have children with different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensuring that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property, they can still sell the property and the proceeds to be used to purchase a new property, the terms of the Trust remain over the new property.
Barrie opened his first salon on 4th November 1996 with the support of a business loan from the Sir Thomas White Charity. He is now a Patron for the Fund, encouraging young people to follow in his footsteps and exercise their entrepreneurial spirit. “It’s really important to give back to the community that has supported me over the years” Barrie says. “In 25 years I am proud to have supported 25 charities, raising hundreds of thousands of pounds for good causes in Leicestershire.” Most recently this has included raising funds as an Ambassador for Leicester Animal Aid, but in the past Barrie and his team have collected money to help women’s refuges and other locally based charities. Barrie Stephen Hair have also commanded the attention of their industry, being recognised with an incredible number of accolades over the years. The salons, the team and Barrie himself have received nearly 100 national awards – from Best Salon Group nationally to Business Person of the Year. As a local lad that has been able to forge a successful pathway, Barrie is very conscious of offering opportunities to other locals. “We have helped hundreds of young people to get their foot on the ladder as professional stylists” Barrie told us. “My business has always been about people – we find success by working together and lifting each other up.” Many of the people Barrie has trained in his salons have gone on to start their own businesses and become national award winners in their own right. In Barrie Stephen Hair’s silver jubilee year, Barrie is understandably in a reflective mood. Like so many others, he and his team have been through a difficult time over lockdown. Protecting the jobs of the 50 people he employs became the priority. However, throughout his career, Barrie has always been known for acting responsibly – putting his team and his customers first. His salon group have routinely been using mandatory skin tests for hair colour services for nearly 15 years, and they are also pioneers of sustainable, environmentally friendly and vegan hair products. Barrie is looking forward to another 25 years of giving back to the people of Leicestershire.

Christmas Lights Competition Anstey Parish Council will again be running a Christmas Light Competition during December. To take part you don’t need to enter. Representatives from the Council will be going around all the streets in Anstey to admire the displays and make judgements on the best displays. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three displays. The Christmas lights that the parish council provide always provokes conversation and we would like to receive any feed back you have on the displays. Over 90’s This is the last call to hear from any residents aged over 90 within the village who could receive a card and small gift from the parish council. If you, your relatives or neighbours are aged 90 or over do get in touch with the parish office so we can make sure they are included in our Christmas wishes. Work of the Parish Council It has been a very busy year and as we move towards the year end, the work of the Parish Council continues. Article by Gary Trickett
Doesn’t quite have the same ring to it, does it? Tame tummy troubles this festive season with the following healthyeating tips: Swap red and fatty cuts of meat, which can be hard to digest, with lean cuts of white meat or fish. Turkey is perfect – check. There are also plenty of vegetarian alternatives to choose from and whilst a traditional nut roast is delicious, nuts can be very difficult to digest and heartburn can result. The vegetarian Christmas dinner needn’t consist of nuts. Why not try your hand at a vegan wellington packed with roasted vegetables, cooked beetroot and kale, or a vegetarian wreath crammed with roasted butternut squash and juicy mushrooms? Cheese also wreaks havoc on your digestive system, so bear this in mind when the cheeseboard is doing the rounds. Reduce your intake of sugary foods, biscuits and rich puddings. I’m afraid Christmas pudding is one of the worst offenders - how about a delicious fresh-fruit salad instead? Chew your food. It sounds obvious but so few do. Chewing not only breaks your meal down to a manageable size, it also alerts the stomach to the imminent arrival of food, giving it the time to produce the digestive enzymes it needs to digest food properly. For a helping hand with digestive enzymes a prebiotic supplement like Molkosan Fruit taken half an hour before each meal can help. For bloating and indigestion associated with feelings of fullness and wind there’s Digestisan with Cynara, Dandelion and Boldo to help stimulate digestive enzymes, and Peppermint to help reduce the symptoms of colic and wind. Dilute 15 to 20 drops three times a day in a little water. If you are constipated drink plenty of water (not coffee and tea, as they can make things worse), and drink it away from meals so as not to dilute your digestive juices. For a real blast to get things moving again try Triphala or Psyllium, starting with a low dose. For further information, visit Gary and his team at Healthy Route, 18 Silver Street, Leicester.

Thurcaston & Cropston Local History Society
Film Presentations Thurcaston And Cropston Parish Council
After completing the formal business of the AGM at our November meeting, we rewarded ourselves with entertainment from the Leicestershire Guild of Storytelling, in the person of Kathy Chalk. The Guild has been collecting and re-telling local stories for over 25 years. Some of them are unique to Leicestershire and Rutland, while others are local versions of tales that are known around the world, from collections such as The One Thousand and One Nights.
In November, we were delighted to resume showing monthly films. “Downton Abbey” was as we anticipated, containing suspense, intrigue and romance. It was luxurious, aristocratic and amusing, especially during scenes with Maggie Smith.
Article by Peter Smith
Kathy first told us about the rector of Ratby, who fell out with the local squire over a matter of conscience and came to a soggy reckoning in Groby Pool. Next, she recounted the history of our own Hugh Latimer, who progressed from being the son of a Thurcaston farmer to become a famous preacher and Bishop of Worcester. However, he ended his days being burned at the stake in Oxford under the reforms of the Catholic queen Mary Tudor. On a lighter note, there was Jack, who travelled from London to visit Leicester market and tried to take advantage – in more ways than one – of local girl Bella. However, he got more than he bargained for when he returned a year later! This story achieved national fame by being circulated in print as one of the “broadside ballads”. Kathy’s final tale was of Dan Hugh: a monk in one of Leicester’s friaries, who was murdered three times in the same night and a pike was eventually hanged for the crime. To find out why, you’ll have to seek out the Guild’s book Leicestershire & Rutland Folk Tales, which includes this story and many more. As usual, the Society will not be meeting in December but we have another diverse programme of events planned for 2022 and we hope you will join us as a member or a visitor then.
Programme Of Events 2022 The Society aims to encourage interest in the history of the parish. We usually hold seven indoor meetings each year, with talks on historical subjects: as local as we can manage! They take place at 7.30pm in Thurcaston Memorial Hall on the third Tuesday of most months. In the summer we arrange walks or visits to places of historical interest in the area. Our planned programme for 2022 is set out below and you would be very welcome to join us at any of the events as a visitor (£4) or as a member for the year (£16). Programme for 2022 18th Jan

“Fisherman’s Friends” will be shown on December 10th and lasts 112 minutes. We are showing this incredible British true story as our film leading up to Christmas. Ten Cornish men were signed to Universal Records and achieved a top ten hit with their traditional folk songs and sea shanties. They were bound together by lifelong friendships and forty years shared experience, beginning on the harbour wall of their fishing village. Starring Tuppence Middleton, this biographical comedy drama won the prestigious Good Tradition Award from the BBC. “Judy” will be shown on January 14th 2022 and lasts 118 minutes. Judy Garland had a long and distinguished career on stage and screen, highlighted by playing Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz”. Our January film shows Renée Zellweger give the performance of her life in a powerful and moving portrayal of Judy in London. At the famous Talk of the Town. Jury’s spirit had dimmed to a rather tragic figure. However, her old spirit and personality did flicker back to life. "Nomadland" will be shown on February 11th 2022. We will be keeping the hall well ventilated and there will be room for us to space out. We would like to be cautious at this point and make sure that everyone feels comfortable. Could we suggest that you wear face masks whilst moving around the hall? Once seated, we will leave the choice to you. Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council will be showing these films at Thurcaston Memorial Hall, starting at 7.30pm. Film tickets will cost the usual £5 which includes a lucky prize draw during the interval. We ask you to pay for tickets in advance from Richard 0116 2363 066 or Diana 0116 2362619

Deborah Taylor
County Councillor for Bradgate Division T: 0116 2350126 E: deborah.taylor@leics.gov.uk As I write my report this month it is hard to believe that the clocks have gone back, Halloween and Bonfire Night have been celebrated, and Diwali. Christmas is almost here and, before long, we shall be welcoming in 2022. The last few months have started to feel more like we are back to what the new ‘normal’ will be. I have been in County Hall a lot more attending face to face meetings and attending many more events. There is always a downside, and even though I have been very careful and kept my distance from people, I have still been a close contact of a positive Covid case several times. I have taken all the necessary actions but seem to be having many Covid PCR tests. This shows me that the Covid infection is still very much with us and as we enter the festive season, we must all do all that we can to protect our loved ones and to keep them safe. The up-to-date information is to try and limit your contact with other people, and get vaccinated (including your booster, if offered). Let fresh air in if you meet indoors (though meeting outdoors is safer), wear a face covering, and get tested and self-isolate if required. Further information on Covid is here: www.gov.uk/guidance/covid-19coronavirus-restrictions-what-you-can-and-cannot-do and also on my website: www.bradgateconservatives.org.uk I have attended several meetings this month to discuss the Spending Review announced by the government. It will be a few weeks before we fully understand what the announcements will mean for Leicestershire, but I am continuing to lobby for fairer funding, to get more support for the residents of Leicestershire. Over the past month, I have attended a coffee morning in Newtown Linford to be part of the presentation to the past Clerk, Pam McMorran, on her retirement. I have also had various site meetings with residents to discuss their concerns and to discuss action that I will take up on their behalf. I have supported the Mayor of Charnwood at the presentation of the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Services by the Lord-Lieutenant of Leicestershire. The award was presented to Menphys and it was a great event to hear from some of the amazing volunteers who work there. I have held meetings with the Chairman of the County Council to discuss youth knife crime and have hosted a very positive meeting with Jane Hunt MP and Edward Argar MP at County Hall to discuss local issues.
more about the subject. Creative Learning Services and Leicestershire Libraries have worked together to create climate change reading lists for both primary and secondary school children, and adults. These volunteers will support and encourage people in Leicestershire to take action to reduce their impact on the environment. If you would like any further information, please contact me. Leicestershire Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) Programme Leicestershire County Council, working with Active Together (formerly Leicestershire and Rutland Sport), are coordinating the Department for Education-funded HAF programme, across Leicestershire for the festive school holidays. The Council is supporting Leicestershire schools, Voluntary and Community Sector organisations and other out-of-school/holiday activity organisations, to deliver holiday club provision to school-aged children (5 to 16 years) living in Leicestershire who are eligible for free school meals. The Winter 2021 HAF programme will offer provision for four days (Monday 20th December 2021 to Thursday 23rd December 2021). The aim is that the children who attend the provision will be supported: • to eat more healthily over the school holidays • to be more active during the school holidays • to take part in engaging and enriching activities • to be safe and not to be socially isolated • to have greater knowledge of health and nutrition • to be more engaged with school and other local services
I attended the Remembrance Service in Loughborough on Sunday 14th November to support the Mayor of Charnwood. It was great to see Queen’s Park full of families, paying their respects. A very moving service and on the way home, I laid my wreath on behalf of my residents at the church in Woodhouse, by the war memorial.

COP26 As COP26 has drawn to a close, Leicestershire County Council is urging residents to do all they can to help tackle climate change, so that we can work together to make Leicestershire a net zero county by 2045.
Leicester Park and Ride is a joint operation between Leicestershire County Council and Leicester City Council. More details of the additional services, festive timetables and fares are available from the Leicester Park & Ride website www.choosehowyoumove.co.uk/park-ride
Through the Green Homes Grant, the authority is also offering eligible homeowners the chance to benefit from sustainable home improvements, such as the installation of double glazing and solar energy. The grant will help residents by improving the warmth and comfort of their homes, whilst also reducing energy bills, carbon emissions, and levels of fuel poverty across the county.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year. I would also like to thank you all for your support over the past year and to thank ‘Your Local’ for their ongoing support throughout the year. This enables me to get information out to all residents very quickly.
Another way residents can help tackle the climate emergency is by reading

Park and Ride Leicester Park and Ride is running extra services throughout December from all their three sites. Shoppers and sightseers can catch a bus into the city centre every day in December, except Christmas Day. That includes services running every Sunday in December (5th, 12th, 19th) and Boxing Day. They will run every 15 minutes between 10am and 5.30pm from the sites at Meynell’s Gorse, Enderby and Birstall. Services on Monday 27th and Tuesday 28th December will also be running from 10am to 5.30pm, with the 7am-7pm buses resuming on Wednesday 29th December. Group tickets are just £3 for up to five people travelling together in the same car, with free travel for NHS staff and concessionary pass holders. This is far cheaper than paying car park costs.
All three of the Park and Ride sites have free parking for service users, including disabled spaces, and parent and child parking.
If you have any issues or concerns, I’m here to help. Deborah

Sign Up For A Flipping Fabulous Fundraiser And Take Part In A Penguin Parade For Marie Curie Article by Peter Sara Marie Curie is calling on flipping fabulous young fundraisers to step out this festive season and take part in a penguin parade for families affected by terminal illness. The newly launched Penguin Parade will see young children go for a waddle of any distance at their nursery or primary school, to raise money and light up the festive season for local families affected by terminal illness. The cute fundraiser is fronted by Penelope the Penguin, who will make an appearance in plush toy form at nurseries and schools taking part. Peter Sara, Marie Curie Community Fundraiser in East of England said: “We’re so excited to be launching this brand-new fundraising event and hope our young supporters enjoy stretching their legs and going for a little waddle with Penelope. Christmas can be a difficult time for those who are bereaved, living with a terminal illness or caring for a loved one at the end of life. By taking part in the Penguin Parade, you can help us continue to be there for everyone who will need us now and in the future. Penelope hopes to join in on all the fun, but a little birdie tells us that stocks of Penelope the Penguin are limited, so pull your flipper out, and sign up now!” The Penguin Parade is aimed at children aged 1-6 and the charity recommends taking part in small groups, such as nurseries or primary schools. Once signed up, participating nurseries and schools will get everything they need for the perfect Penguin Parade, including Penelope the Penguin a soft cuddly toy. Then all that’s left to do is raise as much as possible! For more information on Penguin Parade and to sign up visit: mariecurie.org. uk/penguin-parade or contact your local Community Fundraiser, Peter Sara: peter.sara@mariecurie.org.uk or alternatively: 07887 625 449.

Anstey Chess Club Article by Ben Vaughan Venue: Anstey Methodist Church When: Thursday evenings from 7pm League Chess Results We are delighted to be able to play league chess again and we have had mixed results once more in our recent games: 26/10/21 - Heathcote Arms 1 2.5-1.5 Anstey 1 A narrow loss for the first team with the author's game being the one that was lost and all of the other games ending in closely fought draws. 4/11/21 - Ashby 3 2.5-2.5 Anstey 2 An excellent draw away from home in Ashby for the second team. A good win each for Mike Griffiths and Alan Skaria with a good draw for Leo too two of our youngsters getting positive results there. 11/11/21 - Anstey 1 1.5-3.5 Market Harborough 2 Another defeat for the first team but the games were much closer than it would appear with another debutant - Julian Tarwid - unfortunately losing on his debut for us. We do have high hopes for him though and he is of course welcome at the club. 18/11/21 - Anstey 2 1.5-2.5 Loughborough 2 Old boy Matt Connor (part of the division 4 winning team pre-COVID) joined us on what was a lovely occasion to see him having moved away from the area. He drew as did two of the other guys. Unfortunately, there was a loss on board 4 for Leo this time. Venue Following on from losing the Stadon's upstairs room due to a long-term hire (thank you to the Stadon for their support of the club), we are now playing at the Methodist Church in Anstey, on Cropston Road near the pedestrian lights. We have had to hire this spacious playing room and we have received some excellent financial support so far from our members and a very kind donation of £200 from The Anstey Town Charity - an organisation which helps local clubs/organisations in Anstey with funding. We also have a grant application in with the Parish Council for further funding to help us with the running costs of the club. Why not visit us? Please do come down to the club, we have the use of the room at the Methodist Church until June next year (a 40 week hire) so we would love to fill the room every week with new and old chess players. Many people have referred to the Netflix series 'The Queen's Gambit' giving people the chess bug so if that has fuelled your chess fire, please do come and join us for a relaxing game or two against our members. For player safety, hand sanitiser is available at all times and if you feel comfortable you are welcome to wear a face covering if you prefer to do so. Junior Coaching/Lessons I am delighted to announce that in partnership with Beanies Soft Play (top floor above Potters Carpets) in Anstey, we are now putting on Junior chess teaching/coaching/lessons again for children of all ages. Beanies has a wonderful clean and spacious soft play area (my 3-year-old girl loves it there!) so if you have a child interested in chess but you have a sibling that isn't interested in chess, then Beanies is the perfect solution! There is an excellent choice of food and drink to please all tastes in the cafe area too. Sessions are on Saturday mornings from 9-11am and will cost £3 per session per child for chess (payable directly to Beanies) and this will include some juice for the little ones. Note: Additional costs will apply for softplay area and refreshments Hope to see you soon

Anstey WI
Article by Sheila Timms At the annual meeting of AnsteyWI, members were amazed to be reminded of just how much had been done over the past year, especially during the time when meetings were possible only digitally or outdoors. Readers of earlier reports in this publication will be aware of Zoom meetings with speakers and demonstrations, garden parties of various sizes, and goodie bags deliveries at Christmas and Easter. More recently we had had two full meetings in person with excellent speakers, which were a joy. On display at the meeting were photographs of the past year, as well as group pictures past and present. The annual meeting usually is greeted with rather less enthusiasm, but this year several members commented on social media on that they had really enjoyed it. This was in part the result of the bring and buy which followed. This was prompted by the amount of stock left from our stall at the Anstey gala, but members produced much more, and it raised £43. There was also the opportunity for members to socialize for much of the time, which was greatly appreciated.

Deborah Taylor Borough Councillor for Anstey
T: 0116 2350126 E: cllr.deborah.taylor@charnwood.gov.uk As we reported in the last edition of Your Local, we were both very saddened to hear of the passing of one of our fellow borough councillors, Gill Bolton. Gill had represented the Shelthorpe Ward since May 2019. Gill sadly passed away on 19th October 2021, peacefully at home. As a serving councillor her loss will be felt across the chamber. We both attended Gill’s funeral in November and were honoured to say goodbye to a highly respected lady. We have both been busy with casework this month with some very complex issues to try to resolve. We have also been attending a few events and are about to enter the festive season, with lots of lovely Christmas events to attend. We have both missed being out and about, speaking to residents, so we are looking forward to celebrating this month. We both attended the Remembrance Service, held at the Carillon Tower, Loughborough’s war memorial, on Remembrance Sunday. Serving and former members of the Armed Forces joined together with residents and organisations in Loughborough to pay tribute to our fallen heroes (more detail in Mayoral section below).

continue to keep a close eye on this, as we know this is having a negative impact on residents. Mayoral Activity The Mayor has had a busy month! He and the Mayoress attended the Diwali Lights Celebration Programme at Loughborough Town Hall at the request of the Shree Ram Krishna Community, which included turning on the lights, watching a fantastically-varied programme of Asian singing, dancing and even rapping, and the Mayor made a short speech about Diwali and hope and its resonance in times of Covid. Later in October, he laid a wreath for the University of Leicester’s Poppy Pilgrimage (double-hatted as both Mayor and University of Leicester professor). Later that day, he and the Mayoress were absolutely delighted to meet the ‘Sheriff of Cossington’, David, a volunteer member of the Cossington Neighbourhood Watch (NW), organised by his carer, with the local neighbourhood watch co-ordinator, an enormous Great Dane, and other members of the watch! David’s mum served up tea and biscuits after we did a patrol of the area. It was a heart-warming and inspiring visit, and the Mayor and Mayoress were struck by the dedication of David and the Cossington NW team to maintaining the safety and security of their village. If you are interested in joining your local Neighbourhood Watch Scheme (in Cossington or elsewhere), you can find out more details here: www.ourwatch.org.uk Later that day, the Mayor/Mayoress attended the Leicestershire & Rutland Royal British Legion (RBL) Festival of Remembrance event at De Montfort Hall in Leicester, organised by the president Colonel Martin OBE. This was a fabulous event, and they were overjoyed to hear a most excellent concert by the Brighouse and Rastrick brass brand. In November, the they opened the garden of remembrance in Queen’s Park. The Mayor attended ‘Men and Women in Sheds’ - an Age UK Leicestershire initiative – in Loughborough, designed to get people aged 50+ learning and sharing skills in a workshop environment (see: www.charnwoodshed.co.uk
Let’s Get Back A campaign to highlight Charnwood’s fantastic high streets, great attractions, top places to eat and drink, and outstanding open spaces has been launched. The ‘Let’s Get Back’ campaign is encouraging people to support their local area, businesses, and communities by taking the time to go and visit them. The Council wants residents to share what it is that makes Charnwood such a great place to live, visit and work in. Is it the bustling high streets of Loughborough, Shepshed, Birstall, Syston or Thurmaston or the rural retreats of Anstey, Quorn, Barrow or Woodhouse Eaves? Have you spent time at the Outwoods or Bradgate Park recently or popped along to Great Central Railway, Loughborough Bell Foundry, Charnwood Museum or Loughborough Market? Share your views with the ‘Let’s Get Back’ Campaign by joining in the conversation on social media. The Let’s Get Back campaign is all about showcasing what a great place Charnwood is, and there’s never been a better time to explore it. Member Grants The Member Grants scheme for 2021/22 remains open. For the 2021/22 financial year, each borough councillor was allocated an annual budget of £500 to be used to support projects that bring benefits to their ward. Organisations currently running projects with community benefit in Charnwood are invited to apply for a minimum of £250 per member, and up to a maximum of £500 per member, and applications may be made to more than one member. Funding can be provided towards community events, activities, equipment, and uniformed groups such as Scouts, Guides, Cubs and Brownies. Although we have previously advised that this grant is available, no group in Anstey has come forward yet to discuss a grant application with us this year. Time is running out to distribute the money! If you would like to apply for a member grant, please contact either Paul or Deborah in the first instance. There is £1,000 available for community groups in Anstey. For more information please visit: www.charnwood.gov.uk/pages/member_grants Well Pharmacy We have received numerous contacts from residents who were disappointed about the service being provided by the village pharmacy. We therefore raised our concerns with Well Pharmacy HQ. Since, we received this response from them: We are hopeful that the service will improve at the pharmacy, but we will

The Mayor and Mayoress both attended the opening of the Loughborough Fair, its 800th year of operation this year. The Mayor went on many of the rides, including the Waltzer, the Dodgems, the Carousel, one of the rollercoasters, and a rather terrifying booster ride. After winning the Mayoress a very big teddy (which they later donated to a raffle for a children’s charity), they had a pie and mash dinner in the Town Hall, before later that evening opening up the wonderful Perilicious fusion restaurant on Baxter Gate (see: https://perilicious.uk/) in Loughborough, whose owners took the brave decision to open up in lockdown. Eve, the manager, was the perfect hostess, and we really enjoyed meeting her and the head chef and tasting some of their delicious food (and taking some home!). The Mayor attended the Charnwood Veterans Breakfast Club at Toby Carvery (thankfully not eating for a change) and got the chance to talk to a number of veterans and their families about their experiences and lives before visiting the Miniature Fairground Show at John Storer House in
Loughborough. It was fabulous to see a number of the actual rides in the town in miniature! Later the Mayor and Civic Officer, re-attended the fair, with a ride on the Ghost Train, see picture below. Remembrance Sunday was a busy one! The Mayor and Mayoress attended the Loughborough RBL service & parade at the Carillon Tower, led by the RBL Loughborough chaplain, Rev. Wendy Dalrymple, and with the LordLieutenant, Michael Kapur OBE in attendance. It was great to see so many people from Charnwood pay their respects to the fallen. The Mayor gave a short reading. More details about the service are here: www.charnwood. gov.uk/news/2021/11/14/remembrance_sunday_service_pays_respects_ to_fallen_heroes After a reception with RBL members at the Fennel Street Club, and a super curry lunch with the troops of 203 (Loughborough) Transport Squadron - an army reserve unit of the Royal Logistics Corps the Mayor and Mayoress went on to a remembrance service at St Peter’s Church in Mountsorrel and a cup of tea at the Mountsorrel Memorial Centre afterwards. During their meeting with 203 Squadron, they learnt that the Squadron is recruiting so if there is anyone out there looking for a job where you can learn great skills, get paid, work part-time, and see the world (all whilst still keep your main job!), then have a look here: https://tigerssqn203. wixsite.com/loughborough The Mayor and Mayoress have encouraged around 30 people to sign up for the Living Without Abuse (LWA) Winter Ball at the Leicester Marriott in early December, raising around £1,200 for the charity by the time ticket sales closed, and another £400 in donations. The next event will be a Burns Night Supper at The Swan in the Rushes in Loughborough for a three course meal for £28 per person on 22nd January in the New Year. Please book early to secure your place and avoid disappointment: https://lwa.enthuse.com/cf/lwa-burns-night-supper If you would like to donate to one of the Mayor’s two charities, Living Without Abuse or Marie Curie, please donate in the following ways: • Living Without Abuse: Donate via the webpage: https://lwa.enthuse.com/ pf/paul-baines • Marie Curie: Donate via BACS using the following details: Account name: Borough of Charnwood Bank name: HSBC Bank address: 41 Market Place, Loughborough, Leicestershire, LE11 3EJ Sort code: 40-30-24 Account number: 61820559 Reference: Please add in ‘Mayor’s Charity’. Alternatively, you can send a cheque made payable to ‘Charnwood Borough Council Mayor’s Charity’ to: The Mayor’s Office, Charnwood Borough Council, Southfield Road, Loughborough, Leicestershire, LE11 2TX. Planning You will be aware that Anstey is now the subject of numerous, very large planning applications. We have been notified that the planning application for up to 500 houses by William Davis has been submitted to Charnwood Borough Council. There are two separate applications submitted but they will be looked at together. The first one, reference number: P/21/2358/2, is a full application for 150 houses, with access off Bradgate Road, between 176 and 178 Bradgate Road. The second application, reference number P/21/2359/2, is for outline planning permission for up to 350 houses and a primary school. This will be accessed from a proposed mini roundabout off Bradgate Road, just as you exit Anstey, towards Newtown Linford. Both applications have been submitted but are only at the validation stage, so the consultation stage has not started yet. We will be updating our website and social media with further information once we reach the next stage. We wanted residents to be aware as soon as possible, so you can begin to look at all the proposals as submitted. Once we have had more time to look closely at these applications, we will form our response and share this via our website, social media and in our monthly reports. Website Our website www.bradgateconservatives.org.uk is kept bang up-to-date and has some useful information on it. You can now access our website through a QR code. If you want access to our website using your mobile phone just open the camera application on your smartphone. Point your camera at the QR code below to scan the QR code. A notification will pop-up on your screen. Click on the notification to open the website link. We would both like to wish all our residents a very Happy Christmas and peaceful New Year. After what has been another very tough year for many people, we are hopeful 2022 will bring us a brighter future. If you have any issues or concerns, we are here to help. Deborah and Paul

Maplewell Road Development. Further to my previous information about the appeal decision to allow the development of up to 36 dwellings adjacent to Maplewell Road. I thought I would write to the Secretary of State to ask for help and advice. I did ask the Secretary of State to intervene in this case. I noted the areas of policy that seemed to have a negative impact on this part of Woodhouse Eaves village, which was outlined in the Inspector’s Decision Notice. I was surprised that the response to my request had been passed to the Planning Inspectorate as the executive agency with the specialist remit for planning appeals. I would like to share with you two of the areas of interest included in the reply: In this appeal, for the reasons set out in the decision letter under “The Planning Balance”, it was the judgement of the Inspector that the identified harms did not outweigh the benefits that derive from the delivery of 36 more dwellings in an area with significant shortfall, together with the delivery of affordable units. With regard to your request for intervention. The powers would be used only where the decision is judged to be grossly wrong that damage would be likely to the wider public interest. In this context, the Secretary of State will not be revoking the permission that has been granted. Unless there is a successful High Court challenge, the decision is final. I know this decision has caused a considerable disappointment to many residents, I too find it difficult to understand the final outcome. It does seem that Charnwood Borough Councils inability to demonstrate a five year land supply of housing made the difference this time in the decision making process. You may also be interested in this part of the reply: Planning permission was granted in outline only with all matters except access reserved for later consideration. Condition 1 attached to the planning permission requires that details of the appearance, landscaping, layout and scale (‘the Reserved Matters’) must be submitted to and approved in writing by the Council before any development takes place and the development shall be carried out as approved. I will keep you informed when this application is submitted to Charnwood Borough Council. Loughborough Business to run Outwoods Café. A Loughborough business will be the operator for the new café at the Outwards which is being created as part of the new visitor centre. Charnwood Borough Council can reveal that Olivia’s Coffee and Bakery will be running the café in the Outwoods Visitor Centre. Work to convert the former ranger’s cottage started earlier this year and following a rigorous contract tendering process, the Council has chosen Olivia’s Coffee and Bakery. The artisan bakery and eatery which is owned by Jose Diaz opened in Market Street, Loughborough in 2018 and will be known to many residents and visitors to the town. I understand it is hoped to open the café at the Outwoods during November. I know many local residents visit the Outwoods especially at the time when the bluebells are in full bloom. The Outwoods is 110 acres of ancient woodland and is one of the oldest surviving woodland sites in Charnwood. It is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest by Natural England, which means it is protected by law to conserve its wildlife and geology. Veterans Breakfast Club. Charnwood Veterans Breakfast Club is back and is welcoming members, new and old, to meet up for breakfast. Members meet at the Toby Carvery on Forest Road Loughborough on the second Saturday every month 9.30am until 11.30am Family members and carers are also welcome to come along. The group is friendly and are always looking to welcome new members. Breakfast costs £5 with unlimited tea and coffee. More information is available on the Charnwood Veterans Breakfast Facebook group or call Victoria Coomber on 07540454838. Please check latest details out before attending. Charnwood Borough Council is committed to supporting the armed forces personnel and veterans as part of the Armed Forces Covenant. A scheme which

Parkinson’s Group December Plans Article by Robert A. Leake
The Hinckley & District Parkinson’s Group have been welcoming so many members back to their gatherings during the past two months, and they have been joined by so many new members, many having been made aware of the Group from articles like this one in this Your Local magazine. Looking ahead to the coming months our Sunday meeting at the Mary Forryan Centre [LE10 1LW] in Hinckley will be at 2.30 on December 12th. [a Christmas Social event] with the January meeting on the 9th.
A few of the participants in a recent meeting. Our Tuesday exercise class, Nordic Walking and Friday choir [‘A-Choir’d –taste’] are all being well attended, while the dance session on Fridays, currently at Elmesthorpe, has proved a great success, for both people with Parkinson’s and their carers – even those who reckon they have two left feet! There are so many benefits from singing, dancing and general exercise for those with Parkinson’s. It is often called the new medicine in that it has been proved to slow the progression of Parkinson's symptoms when used in conjunction with maintaining a healthy lifestyle, maintaining a regular medication regime and regular reviews. Our monthly social drop-in at Dobbies [‘Woodlands’] at Stapleton will be on Monday December 20th and January 17th, between 2.00 and 4.00. Just buy a drink [and perhaps a cake] at the restaurant counter and join us in the Soft Play Conservatory area. No, sorry, we don’t actually use the soft play facilities! The support unpaid carers provide to their family members, friends and neighbours is vital, so they need to be able to access the information and help they need. Caring can have an impact on health, RELATIONSHIPS and finances. All carers need to register with the Support for Carers Service on 01858 468543 0r visit the website: Supportforcarers.org You can apply for a Carer’s Passport as well as access invaluable advice and peer support. If you look after someone in Leicestershire and you are both over 18, you may be entitled to some support with your caring role. Visit www.leicestershire.gov.uk/carers-assessment To check on any events or to contact the Hinckley & District Parkinson’s Group give our Chairperson Janet Kavanagh a ring on 07932615233. So don’t let Parkinson’s dictate how you live your life, come along and join the Hinckley Group and see the benefit of being part of a group for yourself.
ANSTEY GALA NEEDS YOU Wasn’t the Gala great? Most of Anstey seemed to be there, enjoying the Scouts’ hot dogs, the entertainment, and meeting each other. Wouldn’t it be a shame if there was no Gala next summer? Organising the Gala is not difficult or time-consuming, it just needs some people like you to spare a few hours a month. And if you represent an Anstey organisation, you share any profit made. Please come to our next meeting at 8pm on Monday 6th December in the Jubilee Hall. Or contact ansteygala@aol.com

Dunelm To Deliver Joy To Local Older People This Christmas Article by Francesca Arculeo This Christmas, leading British home furnishings retailer, Dunelm is joining forces with local Leicestershire charity Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland with an aim to “Deliver Joy at Christmas” to local older people. Colleagues at Dunelm’s Syston-based Store Support Centre are being encouraged to spread kindness and give back to their local community this winter by donating a gift to one of Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland’s day centre users. The campaign, Delivering Joy at Christmas, will give Dunelm colleagues the opportunity to really make a difference this festive season. A Christmas tree in Dunelm’s Syston office will be filled with Delivering Joy tags, with each one representing an individual old person; colleagues will choose a tag and buy a gift for the older person which will then be delivered by Age UK LS&R’s and Dunelm’s representatives, who will see for themselves the joy of a gift at Christmas. Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland is an independent local charity, working in the local community to help older people live happier, active, fulfilled, and socially engaged lives. “It’s really important for Dunelm colleagues to be able to give back to the local community and our Delivering Joy campaign is the perfect way for them to do so. We are extremely proud of the campaign and the engagement from all our colleagues wanting to support Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland. We hope to deliver 400 gifts to Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland during December, helping them to share some joy with individuals who may otherwise not receive anything at Christmas or sadly may not even see anyone over the festive season” Janice Dunn – Head of Community Tony Donovan, Executive Director at Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland added: “For many older people Christmas can be a very lonely time. We are delighted to be working with such an established retailer as Dunelm. If it wasn’t for our Day Care services many local older people would go for weeks without leaving their homes or seeing another person. Attending one of our Day Care centres means that many people are making friends, eating healthy meals, and taking part in activities, helping to keep their mind and bodies healthy. Receiving a gift at Christmas will make all our Day Care clients feel like they are not forgotten and will definitely bring joy.”

Anstey RFC Go Top Of The League After A Win At Old Newts Article by Chris Apperley
On 20th November we travelled to old friends Old Newts and despite being a few players missing had a decent squad. The game started quite well with Anstey pushing Newts back into their half and finally scored a try after ten minutes. The try seemed to change the Anstey side and they spent the rest of the half defending attacks from Newts mainly caused by giving penalties away. Finally the penalties resulted in a converted try for the Newts. Words were had a half time and the lads heeded what had been said then dominating the second half running out winners by 27-7. This was a good top of the table test for Anstey and we came through it well. On 13th November Anstey Rugby also clocked up a 43-0 win Away at Newark which took them by surprise as they had been on a good winning streak. 6th November it was at Home to Leicester Forest where we chalked up a 70-15 league win. 30th October Anstey hosted a rather depleted Oadby Wyggs side where the club was stretched by putting four teams out on the day including a Colts side. Anstey run out 85-7 winners on the day. The next few weeks we host Vipers from Blaby in a League Game, then Quorn (also at home) in a Cup Game, then Cosby and Newark both Away games. Christmas and New Year are next

up and then onwards we go into 2022.
Link Road Playing Field The Anstey RFC Pitch is NOT a Dog Toilet One of the tasks for our Anstey Rugby players before a games is to check for any dog fouling on the pitch as you will understand when playing our contact sport it is not pleasant to come face to face with dog faeces when you are tackled to the ground. Over the years we have often found the odd mistake and cleared it up, but in recent weeks the situation has become ridiculous when on one October Saturday 43 separate stools were found. The pitch is easy to identify with white lines all round the edge and big tall white posts a few metres in from each end. There is plenty more space in the area which does not involve using our pitch and there are two bins to place your poo bags in. Dog Owners: Please, please be more considerate. Thank You A full fixture list is in place right round until the first weekend in May when it will be President’s Day followed by our 40th/42nd Dinner in June and the AGM in the same month. The full 2021/22 Updated fixture list is on our website at www.pitchero.com/clubs/anstey/ teams/41334/fixtures-results If you would like to get involved and start playing rugby, contact either our Chairman Shane Frear on 07725 642525 or Captain Graham Waring on 07764 461961 Visit www.pitchhero.com/clubs/ anstey or our Facebook Group Page at www.facebook.com/ groups/20694012567 for updated information.
First Team The Nomads came into November, right in the thick of their toughest fixture list on paper. Despite the blistering start to the season, Nomads ultimately tasted defeat at home to fellow title challengers, Long Eaton United, last month. They got back to winning ways following the victory against Pinchbeck United, on the 2nd, and then backed that up with a great away 3-1 win, as they travelled to Boston, solidifying their place towards the top end of the table. But what a difference a week makes! Anstey have since lost to Gresley Rovers in a stop-start game as the Gresley floodlights had gone off once before the game had begun, delaying the start by nearly 30 minutes. With Nomads leading the game 1-0, it happened again towards the end of the first half. Nomads later went on to lose the game 2-1 after they were reduced to 10 men late in the first half. This result meant that Gresley leapfrogged the Nomads to sit in 2nd place. Since then, Nomads have also been held at home to strugglers Quorn, who have a new first team manager at the club. This game was a matchday experience for the Under 10s. They were all mascots as they walked on with the players and helped to create the atmosphere with Anstey Nomads flags and scarves! The Nomads round off November with an FA Vase away trip to Aylestone Park, followed by a home fixture to Heanor Town on the 27th. December Fixtures: 04/12/21 – Pinchbeck United (A) 11/12/21 – Sleaford Town (A) 18/12/21 – Selston (H) 21/12/21 – Melton Town (A) Youth Teams With the Nomads now having around 40 youth teams, we have for example THREE Under 18's sides. Anstey Nomads U18's and the U18 Swifts sit 1st and 3rd respectively in the Leicestershire Midweek Floodlit Youth League Central Division. Meanwhile, the Reds sit 4th in the Northern Division. For the Under 18 side, this season seen them reach the furthest in the FA Youth Cup competition in the club's history, by reaching 3rd Round Qualifying. Sadly, their cup run came to an end as they saw defeat to Winslow United, based in Buckinghamshire. Events After the last year and a half, we were finally able to welcome you all back for our annual firework display! Since we had to miss the 2020 display, we knew we had to be back bigger and better than before. None of you disappointed, you all came out to create a special night for us and, hopefully, yourselves. We would like to express our gratitude to all the coaches that volunteered to help make the night what it was. We look forward to seeing you all again next year! We are looking to host more events for our community, we have hosted live performances in our clubhouse, live football screening and have a bingo night coming up on Friday 26th. But we're not done there, keep an eye out for any events upcoming in the new year! Our Clubhouse is also available for private hire.
