Article by Sheila Timms In place of their regular meeting, Anstey WI had a Christmas themed quiz on Zoom, which most ladies enjoyed. This was followed by a general chat, offering tips, such as recipes, for Christmas. The following week, two of Santa’s Elves (Angela Rossa and Anne Spanswick) delivered a wonderful goody bag to each member. Inside was a selection of home baked treats, a little bag of sweets, a clementine, a handmade clay Christmas tree, scented soap and a scented fabric sachet, as well as a newsletter, a Christmas quiz sheet, a selection of cracker jokes, a blank card to decorate and send to a fellow member for New Year, and instructions for knitting a sparkly spider for the tree, in tribute to a German legend of a tree covered in cobwebs, which Santa turned to silver and gold, hence tinsel. It was a spectacular team effort by the whole committee. Anstey WI was nominated in the Top Team category for the Charnwood Local Heroes award.

A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensuring that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property, they can still sell the property and the proceeds to be used to purchase a new property, the terms of the Trust remain over the new property.

Deborah Taylor Borough Councillor for Anstey

T: 0116 2350126 E: cllr.deborah.taylor@charnwood.gov.uk Happy New Year! We hope you all managed to spend some time with family and friends safely over the short Christmas break. We are writing this report early in December, so it is not too long since our last report was written, so this will be a fairly short report. We are hoping that you all have managed to keep social contact to a minimum and maintain our reducing level of Covid-19 infection cases; they were dropping before Christmas. At the time of writing this report, we were still waiting for the review of the tier levels on 16th December. The vaccination program started in December 2020, with NHS workers and the over 80s selected for treatment in the first cohort. In early 2021, we expect other types of the Covid-19 vaccine to be licenced and rolled out to the wider population. We are hoping that 2021 will be a better year for us all and we can get back to some sort of ‘normality’, whatever that is. Lighthouse Lab The UK’s newest Lighthouse Lab opened at the end of November 2020 at the Charnwood Campus in Loughborough. The lab is not only a boost for the country’s Covid-19 testing capacity and the battle against the pandemic but also the local economy, thanks to the jobs created there. The advanced lab began processing samples straight away and its 400-strong team will be testing up to 50,000 samples daily by early 2021. The Lighthouse Lab at Charnwood Campus is the result of a partnership between the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and multinational diagnostics specialists at PerkinElmer Genomics, which has been engaged to equip, staff, and manage the facility. The facility will operate 24 hours per day with a team of experienced scientists, researchers, technicians and warehousing personnel whilst also creating opportunities for graduates and those who are pursuing careers in the life sciences to start their careers at the forefront of delivering the UK’s national testing strategy. Shop Safe, Shop Local Charnwood Borough Council has launched a campaign to encourage people to support our local high street shops in Charnwood and to reassure residents that significant steps have been taken to ensure visitors are safe when shopping in the borough. High streets now have extra signage to remind people to maintain a 2m social distance and barriers have been installed around Loughborough town centre to help with queuing. Local businesses have introduced their own measures to ensure they are complying with the government’s latest Covid-19 guidance. Extra cleaning is also taking place in some areas and pubs, cafes and restaurants have introduced a range of measures including test and trace (when they are allowed to re-open). As part of the Shop Safe, Shop Local campaign, Charnwood Council will be adding more signage to the shopping areas, highlighting what businesses are doing to look after customers and staff and reminding people of the latest advice and guidance on shopping safely. The campaign is borough-wide as Charnwood has many shopping areas including in Loughborough, Shepshed, Thurmaston, Syston, Birstall, Anstey, Quorn, Mountsorrel, Barrow upon Soar and Newtown Linford. All will feature in the Shop Safe, Shop Local spotlight. The Shop Safe, Shop Local campaign is funded thanks to the ‘Reopening High Streets Safely Fund’ which is supported by the European Regional Development Fund. The campaign is also being supported by Love Loughborough.

The Council and Love Loughborough have also worked together to issue guidance and support to local businesses for both safeguarding their staff and ensuring customer safety. Please keep an eye on this website and on the council’s social media channels for the latest updates. Follow @CharnwoodBC on Twitter or ‘like’ or follow us on Facebook www.facebook.com/charnwoodbc Nationwide Building Society We have been notified that the Anstey Branch of the Nationwide Building Society is due to close on 25th February 2021. On receiving this disappointing news, we - along with Councillor Snartt (representing Newtown Linford) - met with Nationwide's Regional Director, Andrew Westhead and Lead Policy and Public Affairs Manager, Guy Bilgorri on the 9th December 2020. Mr Westhead explained that the building society had taken the decision to close the branch for several reasons, including the following: 1. The building society doesn't own the Anstey branch building and the lease has come up for renewal this financial year. 2. The business isn't viable because there is not sufficient business flowing through the Anstey branch and that there are a number of other branches within 7 miles including in Birstall, Leicester, Coalville, and Wigston. 3. Of the business that is flowing through the branch, 60% of the Anstey branch's customers visit other Nationwide branches elsewhere in the city and county. They explained that customers will still be able to interact with the building society via the telephone on 0800 30 20 11. Those who are digitally savvy can use the Nationwide website (nationwide. co.uk) or the Nationwide app available on Google Play via your smartphone. For those not able to switch to digital and telephone channels, debit card holders can use the Post Office or an ATM for cash withdrawal. To pay in cheques, you will need to use the postal system or visit one of the other nearby branches. We suggest you ring the telephone number above to get the necessary paying-in envelopes or the address should you wish to use the post. Nationwide has explained that they are committed to helping customers manage the change including providing technology support where necessary, so you can ring them and request this. Ask for the 'tea & tech' service. In the interim, we continue to engage with the Nationwide’s management and will encourage them to reverse their closure decision. If you have any issues or concerns, we are here to help. Deborah and Paul

Thurcaston Brownies And The Autumn Term 2020 Article by Irene Marriott

We had not held a meeting since March because of the Covid 19 restrictions, so in mid September it was good to see the girls again when Girl Guiding rules allowed us to ‘meet outside’. We held a scavenger hunt for natural items such as oak and ivy leaves, stones, bark etc. etc. as we walked across the fields from Thurcaston to the play equipment in Jubilee Park, Cropston. For the following ‘outside meeting’ we sheltered under the gazebo in the church yard, while the Brownies cooked sausages on instant BBQs and made the ‘naughty but nice’ smores….melted marshmallows squashed between chocolate biscuits. With leaders wearing face masks, social distancing, temperature checks and hand sanitizer in the church rooms and the Brownies in their ‘Bubbles’, we were able to hold meetings inside again. We began work for the Painting Badge with games to help us identify different styles of painting; abstract, modern, impressionism, expressionism and realism. Practical activities happened in the following weeks as we tried the monochrome style using shapes in just black and white. We were approaching November and used water colour techniques to paint large and small poppies that were transferred to a poster for display at Remembrance. On October 31st Rev. David McDonough organised a video of a ceremony at the war memorial in All Saint’s church with a much reduced number of participants. Two Brownies, Holly and Fleur were involved in lowering the flags for the 2 minutes silence. There was a similar ceremony at the war memorial in Anstey which was also videoed. Rev David has been learning new skills to edit the two ceremonies in split screen mode and the final version was aired on National Remembrance Sunday for the congregations of St Mary’s and All Saints to watch at home due to the Covid restrictions on Church Services. On November 4th the meeting near the Guide sheds began with tossing two Guy Fawkes, that the Brownies had made, onto our bonfire. Hot dogs and hot chocolate kept us warm and the rain held off as we watched multi blocks of fireworks light up the night sky over the Thurcaston fields. Many thanks to Mr and Mrs Crisswell for the fireworks, to Olly for lighting them and to Molly and Helen Dawson for help with the food. Rev David had sent boxes of chocolates to thank the two Brownies who took part in his Remembrance Day video. This was to be our last meeting as Charnwood went into new national restrictions on the next day, November 5th.

Deborah Taylor County Councillor for Bradgate Division

T: 0116 2350126 - E: deborah.taylor@leics.gov.uk Happy New Year and I hope you all managed to enjoy a somewhat different Christmas for 2020. At the time of writing this report, I have no idea what tier we will be in over the festive period and afterwards, but I hope that the additional mixing of households allowed over the Christmas period has not raised the infection rates too much and we are still managing to contain the virus. I am hoping that 2021 brings us a much better year and that the vaccine program continues to gather pace and we begin the long recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.

very aware that we are likely to have a difficult time over the festive period, when the park will be very busy.

I have volunteered for a new Covid-19 Vaccine Trial. The trial is sponsored by the Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson and run by staff through the new National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Patient Recruitment Centre (PRC) at Leicester General Hospital. Up to 400 people were asked to enrol in Leicester as part of 6,000 people across the UK. The Phase 3 vaccine trial is the third potential vaccine to enter clinical trials in the UK. This trial is testing the safety and effectiveness of a twodose regimen of a new COVID-19 vaccine which uses a weakened common cold virus and part of the COVID-19 virus to stimulate the immune system to later fight a real COVID-19 infection. I attended my first appointment on Tuesday 8th December 2020 and was at the trial centre for 4 hours. I received multiple health checks and screening before being accepted, I then received the first injection. You are not told whether you have received the vaccine or a placebo injection. I have several health monitoring checks to complete every week online and the results are sent into the study doctor and I will have a number of clinical check appointments to attend. I will receive a second injection on February 5th 2021, and I remain part of the study trial for up to two years. I am hoping that by taking part in the trial this will enable another vaccine to become available for us to provide immunity from this awful virus.

I have been advised that observations were carried out around June 2020 last year and found that although there was some queueing on Cropston Road the delays were of no more than a minute during the morning peak period. A more detailed survey was due to be carried out in September 2020 once the works at A46 / Anstey Lane roundabout were completed. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19, that survey was not carried out as the traffic levels were significantly less than at the same time in previous years. The average workday volume of traffic on Cropston Road for September 2020 was 5820 compared with 6545 in 2019. Once the traffic has returned to what will be classed as our new ‘normal’, further observations will be carried out.

Bradgate Park Trust In March 2020, the Trustees for the Park agreed to a full review of the whole operation of the running of the park. This included improving access, offering greater educational opportunities and creating financial stability for the long-term future of the park. There was an urgent need to reduce the parks costs, even before the park’s income was affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Some changes have been made and include:

Leicestershire Communities Fund The third round of funding has been agreed by Leicestershire County Council to enable charities, community groups and social enterprises to respond to the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic. A total of £600,000 is being made available in Round 3 of the Leicestershire Communities Fund, for voluntary and community sector organisations to continue to provide essential services for vulnerable people and communities in Leicestershire. The funding can also be used for community-based organisations to develop new and innovative ways of working, to help deliver services for vulnerable people more effectively now and in the future. The maximum amount of funding available to any one organisation through this grant round is £15,000, and the deadline for applications is 22nd January 2021.

• Opening the visitor centre to the public at peak times and for special events. Outside of these times it will be used as a dedicated educational resource • Introduced changes to the parking tariffs, including new rates for three-hour parking, early bird (before 9am) and late afternoon (after 4pm). There has also been a reduction in the day rate at the Hunts Hill car park • There are further discussions being held around the pressure on the Newtown Linford car park. A planning application has been submitted to Charnwood Borough Council around improvements to both the Newtown Linford car park and Hallgates car park • From 14th December a ‘pay by phone’ app will be available for all car parks, apart from the Newtown Linford car park, to remove the need for cash payments and prevent penalty notices where a ticket has fallen off the windscreen. The Trust are now in a position to look to recruit a full-time Director to continue the excellent work of the Interim Director and continue to move the park forward to deliver on its strategic objectives and build relationships and community links. Bradgate Park Parking Proposals; Newtown Linford; Cropston; Anstey The public consultation was launched on 26th November 2020 and closed on 17th December 2020. I have received many responses from residents, both by email and telephone and I did urge everyone I spoke to, to respond to the consultation, to ensure that their views were taken into account. I look forward to understanding more about the comments in the New Year. I am

The Nook; Anstey Since the alterations in The Nook were carried out a couple of years ago, I have asked for the data to see if the improvements promised in the planning application have actually been achieved. I am still concerned about the additional queuing that we see on Cropston Road at particular times of the day.

I also raised the issue of vehicles blocking the roundabout and stopping traffic entering from Cropston Road. Highways have agreed to assess the feasibility of installing a yellow box in that area rather than the keep clear markings that are there currently. However, this will need to be agreed with the Police, as it is an enforceable marking. I will continue to monitor the situation as we return to ‘normal’ life.

The online application form, along with further details can be accessed on this webpage: www.leicestershirecommunities.org. uk/communities-fund-round-3.html and any enquiries regarding applications can be sent to: leicestershirecommunities@leics.gov.uk Disposal of Batteries Leicestershire residents are being urged not to throw out dead batteries with household rubbish or recycling, following a string of fires at local waste sites. There have been three fires at Loughborough Waste Transfer Station within the last six weeks of the year, believed to have been caused by improperly discarded batteries and small electrical items. Waste and recycling centres house combustible materials and lithium-ion batteries, (powering mobile phones, laptops, tablets and toothbrushes) which can be extremely volatile and cause fires if damaged during collection and processing. Further advice on how to safely dispose of batteries and electrical goods is here: www. leicestershire.gov.uk/environment-and-planning/waste-and-recycling If you have any issues or concerns, I’m here to help.

Anstey Parish Council Article by Liz Hawkes

As we enter 2021 I am sure that many will be pleased to be entering a new year and putting behind us the problems and challenges of 2020. The introduction of the vaccine brings optimism that slowly life can return to normal and people will again be able to meet up with families and friends. There remains a certain amount of uncertainty about what the next few months will hold and a realisation that we all need to remain vigilant to keep ourselves and others safe. New ways of working have been established for the Parish Council. All Council meeting are currently held on zoom and as always residents can join these meetings. The link to join meetings appears on the agendas which can be found on the meeting page of the website. Contact details for the website and information about scheduled meetings appears at the end of this report. The Parish Council provided lights for the centre of the village and some of the large mature trees at St Mary’s Churchyard, outside the Jubilee Hall and the top and bottom greens. Thank you to all residents that helped brighten up the dark evening with some great displays of Christmas lights. For the second year running a Christmas light competition has run for residents and the winning properties were 4 Glover Close, 15 Airbourne Avenue and 72 Hazlehead Road. One of the Councillors who took part in the judging for the competition has added the following comments; On the evening of 14th December, several councillors set out (individually of course!) to look at all the Christmas lights on houses around the village and to judge them. It was not an easy task! The village looked beautiful this year; the Nook bright and cheerful and the extra trees with lights so effective and Christmassy. I’m not sure whether it was my imagination but there seemed to be so many more houses with lights, everyone making such an effort to add Christmas cheer at the end of quite a bleak year; and goodness knows we needed it. We all drove around our ‘patches’ individually and then met up and went to look at each area’s top three. Then we tried to decide which was the best! A very long process. In the end we narrowed it down to five properties and then each of us gave each property a score out of 5 which were totalled up to produce the top three. I hope you agree it was a thorough process; so many to choose from and such a difficult decision. I’m so sorry that we couldn’t give everyone a prize but, there’s always next year! Nationwide Building Society Nationwide Building Society are planning to close the branch in Anstey on 25th February

2021. The Parish Council are opposed to this decision to close such an important community facility. If you fee you will be badly affected by this decision, please contact us and Andrew. WestheadOffice@nationwide.co.uk Neighbourhood Plan It remains a project of Council to deliver a Neighbourhood Plan for Anstey. The area has been designated and agreed with Charnwood Borough Council. The meetings for this will resume in early February, these initially will be held virtually on zoom until we are able to hold physical meetings. If you would like to receive more information about this project do contact the parish office or Councillor Grant Cotton by email at cllr.grant.cotton@ansteypc. org Those people who have previously shown an interest in this project will be contacted in January to make sure they are able to take part in virtual meetings. Gary Kirk from Locality will be guiding the Council through this project providing his specialist knowledge on this topic and the changes to the planning system that will impact this project. Extension to the Jubilee Hall The planning application has been submitted to extend the Jubilee Hall, these changes will make up a considerable investment in the community of Anstey. These changes will provide a second hall providing facilities for the Scouts and other community groups. This year the work will continue to secure the planning permissions, appointment of a project manager and obtaining detailed costings for the project. Along side this work consideration will be given to what should happen to the existing Scout Hut on Leicester Road. Transport of Public Open Space – Groby Road It has been a very long slow process to have the public open spaces at Groby Road transferred from Davidson Homes to the Parish Council. The final areas for transfer have now finally been AGREED between the two parties and hopefully this can be finalised in the next few months. The land that is transferring is the public open space at Groby Road, the cemetery extension next to the current cemetery and the allotment site. There is currently a full waiting list for allotment plots and we will be allocating plots when the transfer is complete. Davidson Homes are currently looking at submission of another planning application for homes north and south of Groby Road following a recent public consultation, do look out for this application so that you can comment at the appropriate time. Footpath J76 This footpath runs through the village from Link Road out to Link Road Playing Field. The first section of this footpath form Link Road to Woolden Hill School has temporarily been turned into a one way pedestrian footway to aid social distancing along this busy walkway at school times. A notice is in place to bring this change to people’s attention.

The second part of this path has for many years been used predominately by dog walkers. With the establishment of the homes at the Bloor Homes on Cropston Road new pathways now link to this footpath. There is a potential to create a safe walking route to school. Working in partnership with Charnwood Borough Council and Leicestershire County Council the Parish Council are looking to bring forward improvements to this footpath to provide a solid safe footpath. Re-location of the Bus Stop Leicester Road All of the details have been agreed for the bus stop of Leicester Road to be re-located to Stadon Road in a bid to stop congestion in the Nook. This work planned for 2020 was delayed due to working priorities for Leicestershire County Council we look forward to bringing forward these improvements to aid the flow of traffic through the village. Village Event’s Most village events have been cancelled this year. The Events Committee have met to make decisions on hanging baskets, Christmas lights the Christmas lights competition and delivering Christmas gifts for the elderly. It will still be difficult to plan for events next year although we remain hopeful that some small scale events will be able to resume. Budget At the First January meeting the Council will be making a decision at the level of precept, this is the element of the Council tax that is paid to the Parish Council to provide local facilities within the village. Further information about the decision of the Council will be made in the next report if you would like to hear the Council debating this mater do join the meeting using the zoom link. You can contact the Council in the following ways. T: 01530 244804 - E: cllr.david.snartt@charnwood.gov.uk Planning Application. You may recall a planning application for up to 50 dwellings adjacent to Maplewell Road, Woodhouse Eaves was refused by Charnwood Borough Council and dismissed on appeal by a Planning Inspector after the hearing that took place in the Village Hall. There is now a new planning application on the same site for up to 36 dwellings and associated road infrastructure, landscaping, drainage and associated works (considering access only). I have ‘called in’ this application to be determined by a Plans Committee at Charnwood Borough Council. In my view, I still have the same concerns that I stated for the previous application. I know there were many objections from local residents to the last proposal during the consultation process. Therefore, I do hope residents will put forward their views to the Council about this latest application. The planning application details can be found on the Charnwood Borough Council’s web site under application P/20/2107/2. I will keep you updated on this proposal as it goes through the planning cycle. Nationwide Building Society. I was disappointed to receive the information about the closure of the Nationwide Building Society, Anstey Branch. I know there are residents who live in my Council Ward who will be affected by this decision.

of communities within Charnwood. Many were recognised for their excellent support to people in need during the coronavirus pandemic. In my view, what makes these awards so special, they are for the people, organisations and businesses who have been nominated by local people who have seen the difference their actions and contributions have made during the year. This was a time to have the opportunity to say thank you to everyone who had been nominated, especially this year when many people have depended on kindness and support. I was so pleased to see people within my Council Ward receiving their awards, I know they have gone the extra mile to help others in so many ways. I believe this is the reason Charnwood is a great place to live. I thank everyone who has taken the time to help others during these last few difficult months. May I take this opportunity to wish everyone a Healthy and Peaceful New Year. May I also thank all involved with ‘Your Local’ who make sure local news is available every month. Take care and stay safe. Please remember if you need help or you know of anyone who needs help, contact Charnwood Community Action www. charnwood.gov.uk/pages/cca or call 01509 631750. I have already had a meeting with the Regional Director, along with Councillors Deborah Taylor and Paul Baines where we were able to stress how important it is to keep this Branch open especially during these challenging times. I have also written to the Society, this is an extract from my response to the closure.

This seems to be a typical decision made by people far away and out of touch with reality, who have no idea of the consequences this will have for their members. In your e-mail you quote Wigston and Coalville. These locations are not accessible to people without their own transport, we should all be making decisions that cut the need to travel for services. May I ask, what more information do I need to give the Society to reverse this decision which will impact on this local community, especially at this time in Tier 3 of the pandemic, where residents are reluctant to travel, especially the elderly and most vulnerable? All three Councillors involved at the meeting will do all they can to reverse this decision. I will keep you informed on how this matter progresses. Charnwood Community Hero Awards. As Mayor of Charnwood, I had the pleasure of being involved in the Charnwood Community Hero Awards. It was humbling to meet some of the people who have contributed so much to the wellbeing

This is the most disappointing news to receive, especially during these challenging times, when the elderly and most vulnerable residents in our communities need to stay local and travel less. It seems that no thought has gone into this decision other than a commercial decision without any thought about the impact this will have on local members of your Society. What I see when visiting Anstey is a vibrant local branch which is the last such establishment in the village.

Anstey Rugby Now Resumes Training Ready For Fixtures In February Article by Chris Apperley As we all came out of national lockdown at the beginning of December, despite Leicestershire being placed in Tier Three, the Rugby Football Union decided that we can move onto Stage E on their framework ‘Return to Rugby Road Map: Community Game’.

Anstey Nomads

Article by Adam Etheridge Anstey Nomads have continued their remarkable start to the season since the resumption of Football at the beginning of December. The Nomads have played three times since the restart of the season, winning all three matches without conceding. The FA Vase has taken priority over the league with Anstey winning their first-round tie against local rivals Leicester Nirvana. A keenly contested fixture, between two sides that were shaking off the rust after a month without playing, was settled by Michael Reeve’s well taken goal. The 65th minute strike saw the powerful forward latch on Ben Tansley’s through ball, calmly slotting past the opposition ‘keeper to settle the tie. Reeve thought that he had scored in the first half when his header hit the post and looked to have crossed the line. The officials were unmoved though, ruling that the ‘keeper had scooped it away. Following on from their cup triumph, the Nomads made a short midweek trip to Harborough Town for a United Counties League clash. Harborough had looked threatening in the early going and had a couple of good chances to break the deadlock, Conrad Logan had other ideas though, making a couple of good saves to keep the scores level. The tie turned when former Nomad, Freddie Robinson was dismissed for a high challenge after half an hour. Anstey dominated possession from that point, and Tansley cemented the dominance when he connected with Zayn Hakeem’s cross to power home the opener just before the break. Henry Bestwick doubled the lead on the hour mark as he drove home from outside the box as Harborough failed to clear a corner. A third match in eight days saw the Nomads allowed to welcome fans back after two matches behind closed doors. Rainworth Miners Welfare were the guests as Anstey entertained them in the second round of the FA Vase. Once again, Logan was called in to action, making another remarkable save to deny the visitors before Reeve made the decisive contribution once again. Hakeem again provided the assist, playing Reeve through on goal to slide past the ‘keeper and send the Nomads into the third round of the Vase for the first time in 21 years.

This is just one stage away form ‘F’ where ‘Competitive rugby can recommence’. Stage E states that increased contact training is permitted and contact fixtures under law variations are permitted from 18th December. So, time to try out the portable floodlights that were organised in November and get ready for some form of rugby matches starting soon. Like everything else over the last nine months the exact picture as to what happens next keeps changing and although not so long ago the 2020/21 season was virtually cancelled for rugby at our level at the time of writing this (mid December) there are moves afoot to start competitive matches early in February with a sort of loose league structure. Everything will be kept as local as possible and all the Track and Trace protocols will be observed. Also should anyone test positive for Covid, all those who have been in contact will have to self isolate for the prescribed ten day period. In readiness for the very delayed start of the 2020/21 season a squad of about 20 players have been running through drills and rugby skills training on Wednesday nights backed up by fitness activities over the weekend involving long runs and cycling events. Looking forward to seeing Rugby Union played in Our Village Very Soon. If you would like to get involved contact either our Club Coach and Chairman Shane Frear on 07725 642525 or Captain Graham Waring on 07764 461961 The Club noticeboard is in The Coach & Horses - at the big screen end just round to the left inside the official entrance door from the Nook — But you can’t go in the pub! Thurcaston & Cropston Local History Society Article by Peter Smith

For our final online meeting of the year, a brief AGM was followed by our member Jane Smith telling us the story of the Grey family of Bradgate Park from 1720 onwards. By 1720 the family had gained the title of Earl of Stamford and had abandoned court politics for life as landed gentry. In that year the 2nd Earl died and the title passed to a cousin who lived at Enville Hall in Staffordshire. He chose to remain there so Bradgate ceased to be the main family seat and the house fell into decay. The 4th Earl’s marriage brought into the family an estate at Dunham Massey in Cheshire and the further title of Earl of Warrington. In this period the Greys became wealthy by developing coal mines, canals and the mill town of Ashton-under-Lyne. They created fashionable landscape gardens at Enville, with follies, cascades and a Chinesestyle boating lake. Bradgate Park was not forgotten and both the 4th and 5th Earls developed it as a shooting estate, creating the walled spinneys from which game birds could be driven into the path of the waiting guns. The 5th Earl also built Old John, originally in the form of a decorative ruin. The arch was part of a longer wall so it would not have had the appearance of a beer tankard that it does now. The 5th Earl and Countess seem to have had a long and happy marriage, apparently referring to each other as “Groby” and “Grobiana”. When flat racing became popular in the late 18th century, the Grey family turned to breeding racehorses and they laid out courses at Enville and Bradgate to mimic the one at Epsom. They converted Old John into a building for viewing the course around it and you can still see the remains of rubbing-down stables nearby. The aim was to enter races with “unknown” horses trained in private on the Grey estates, which they could bet on to win at long odds, but they achieved only moderate success and never won the great prize of the Derby. The 7th Earl was a colourful character who came into the title aged just 18. Despite being one of the most eligible men in England, he made two scandalous marriages: first to Bessie Billage, the daughter of his bedmaker at Cambridge, then to Kitty Cocks, a bare-back horse rider in a circus! He spent enormous sums to enlarge Enville Hall and develop the gardens there, adding spectacular fountains and a 160-foot-long glass conservatory with pinnacles and onion domes. The gardens received thousands of visitors each week in summer and there were special festivals with multi-coloured illuminations and fireworks. At his Bradgate estate, the 7th Earl built a lavish new 46-bedroom house set in 80 acres of grounds near Field Head. Though not accepted in all circles of society, the Earl and Countess were honoured by a three-day visit of the Prince and

The carriages of people hoping to catch a glimpse of the future king caused a traffic jam all the way from Leicester. The 7th Earl died in the following year but the Countess lived for 22 years longer. On her death the properties were divided up. The Stamford title went to the new owner of Dunham Massey but became extinct in 1976 and the hall passed to the National Trust. Enville Hall was given to a niece of the Countess, whose descendants still live there. The Bradgate estate was sold off in a series of auctions in the 1920s. The new Bradgate House was demolished and only the shell of its grand stable block now survives. And, as we all know, Bradgate Park was bought by Charles Bennion in order to be preserved and enjoyed by the people of Leicestershire, as so many of us do today. www.thurcastoncropstonhistory.org.uk
