There are various causes of tired eyes but generally speaking, if you are suffering from eye strain it would suggest you are overworking your peepers. Everything from too much screen time to driving for long periods of time, can cause tired eyes. Here are some of the symptoms to look out for (no pun intended) and what you can do to help ease eye strain. Any activity that requires your eyes to be focused for a long time can leave your eyes feeling tired. Unsurprisingly, this makes your computer or smartphone one of the most common causes of eye strain. It is estimated that up to 90% of people who use a computer for more than three hours a day experience ‘computer vision syndrome’. Other causes of tired eyes include reading for too long, poor lighting, driving, allergy and simply not getting enough sleep. You know your eyes are struggling if you’re having difficulty focusing, blurred vision (that passes), or sore, dry or irritated eyes. Other common symptoms of eyestrain include increased sensitivity to light, a feeling of heaviness in the eyes and also headaches. There are some logical precautions you can take. If, for example, you know you spend more time than you should in front of a screen, schedule in regular breaks. If you’re not getting enough sleep, address this issue first. Most people suffering from tired eyes also find relief from the use of eye drops. A. Vogel's Eye Drops with Euphrasia and hyaluronic acid, are a favourite for dry, irritated or tired eyes. Just one drop 4 to 5 times daily can help to soothe and maintain lubrication of the eyes. They are also suitable to use whilst wearing contact lenses. For extremely dry eyes try their Extra Moisturising Eye Drops with double the amount of moisturising hyaluronic acid. A little eye cream or gel dabbed around your eye and gently smoothed into your eyelids can also help to freshen tired eyes. For Anstey WI, the May meeting was postponed until later in the month, and was held on Zoom. After debating the resolution to raise awareness of the symptoms of ovarian cancer, and voting to support it, a few members read poems and funny stories. In June we were able to meet face to face (hurrah!) in three committee members’ gardens. What a joy it was to really meet again, and the weather was kind. This too was a relief, after wet, chilly May. A good time was had by all. The hostesses provided drinks, and their guests contributed delicious cakes and biscuits. The smoothie hats members had been knitting were collected for delivery to Age Concern.

Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club Garden Social Event Article by Richard Elks

The Gardening Club’s first activity since the 2020 lockdown was held in May. The aim was to open some local gardens for Club members to mix socially outdoors. Three members who live close to each other in Cropston volunteered to open their gardens. This proved to be a great success and although the weather could have been better it didn’t have any effect on numbers. All three gardens were in excellent order and visitors were very complimentary of each one. The allotted “resting place” at one garden where there were hot drinks and cake, was a hive of activity throughout. There are many people to thank for the success of the afternoon with committee and members helping. Special thanks to the garden owners without whose cooperation this would not have happened. The success of this event has made us give some serious thought to holding something similar in the summer, but much planning will be needed. When the Government makes its key decisions about the next stage of relaxing restrictions, the Parish Council will be able to make decisions about the future use of the Hall. Then we will have a clearer idea of when we can resume Hall meetings. August is in our minds; our fingers are crossed, and we have a speaker booked and ready to go. But the decision is not ours to make. It was great to see so many club members at the garden social. The following photos try to capture some images of the event.

Protecting Your Family’s Inheritance Article by Klara Hesling

Our frontline staff follow Government guidelines for visiting you in your home and they are in the vaccination program with second course completed. LevLaw Ltd remains here for you. Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually. But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased’s share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children’s inheritance is protected. This last point can be particular interest to couples who have come together and have children with different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensuring that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property, they can still sell the property and the proceeds to be used to purchase a new property, the terms of the Trust remain over the new property.

Deborah Taylor Borough Councillor for Anstey

T: 0116 2350126 E: cllr.deborah.taylor@charnwood.gov.uk Charnwood Local Plan Charnwood Borough Council has produced their updated local plan. The Charnwood Local Plan provides a strategy for the location and quantity of development required to support growth of the borough up to 2037. The Local Plan provides a framework to help deliver some of the Council’s top strategic priorities to create a thriving economy, healthy communities and safeguard the environment. The plan also sets out how the borough will meet increased Government targets for new homes, as well as providing employment land and infrastructure. The Charnwood Local Plan 2021-37: • Identifies 154 hectares of employment land to support the creation of 8,900 jobs in the borough and to lead its pandemic recovery • Meets the borough’s housing need - the target figure set by Government - by allocating land for the development of 1,111 new sustainable and well-designed homes each year up to 2037 • Focuses development towards intensifying and extending existing urban and suburban areas and larger villages, thereby protecting nearly 279 square kilometres of open countryside • Plans for the critical mass of development needed to secure infrastructure - including five new schools at Loughborough, Shepshed, Barrow, Anstey and Syston - as well as health services, roads, and public transport networks • Will bring in an estimated £200 million in Section 106 money to pay for other improvements to facilities and amenities • Reflects the importance of the environment and conserving biodiversity, protecting heritage sites, creating open leisure spaces, and supporting healthier communities • Carefully considers the effects of climate change and how to reduce its impacts, including flooding • Makes effective use of the borough’s strategic infrastructure, including Loughborough University, the urban edge of Leicester and the International Gateway connection to the M1 motorway and East Midlands Airport. The plan is now set to go before the full council to ask for their approval to go out for public consultation. Further details can be found here: www. charnwood.gov.uk/pages/charnwood_local_plan_2021_37 If approved, the plan will go out for consultation in July. The plan does include a large amount of housing to be built in Anstey, with the majority of this planned for Groby Road. This is also where the new primary school is also planned to be built. The plan can be viewed here: https://charnwood.moderngov.co.uk/ieListDocuments. aspx?CId=138&MId=665 New Town Centre Hub A Careers and Enterprise Hub has opened in Loughborough to help local people enhance their skills to access the careers market, progress in their existing careers or launch a new business idea. The Hub, which is run by specialist advisors from Loughborough College and Loughborough University, has opened thanks to a £750,000 funding boost through the Loughborough Town Deal. The building was purchased by Charnwood Borough Council using the Town Deal funding and the Council worked closely with the College to get the project off the ground. It is among one of the first projects in the UK to be completed using money from the Government’s Town Deal scheme which is designed to help regenerate town centres, boost businesses, and improve infrastructure and connectivity. The Hub teams will offer advice, guidance, and support to help people develop their skills to boost the local and regional economy as it bounces back from the impact of Covid. The Loughborough College team is supporting local people by advising them on education and training pathways to boost their skills. As well as education and training, the Hub team can advise on CV and letter writing, plus helping people sharpen their interview skills. For opening times and more information, please visit www.loucoll.ac.uk/careers-hub and to book a visit, email the team at careershub@loucoll.ac.uk

Planning Permission The planning application with Callington Construction Ltd on Anstey Lane continues. They have now put in an additional application to add further buildings on the site including those already built and which do not have current planning permission. We have jointly submitted further comments and continue to push Charnwood Borough Council to get this application to the Plans Committee as soon as possible, so that a decision can be made. We have also contacted the police regarding the over-weight vehicles travelling along Cropston Road. They have agreed to carry out some weight limit patrols in the area and we are grateful for their support. Leicester City FC Charnwood Borough Council is proposing to grant FA Cup-winning Leicester City FC the Freedom of the Borough. The honour, the highest the Council can bestow, would recognise the club’s incredible success in recent years and its connection to Charnwood. The 2016 Premier League champions opened a £100 million training facility in the borough in 2020 at Seagrave and title-winning Leicester City Women FC are also based locally, playing home matches in Quorn. The proposal will be considered by councillors on Monday 21st June and if approved, an extraordinary meeting of the Council will be held in September. Anstey and Cropston Litter Wombles Well done to everyone that took part in the inaugural litter wombles first outing. In 2 hours, they collected 11 bags of rubbish from around The Nook, Stadon Road and Leicester Road. Their next litter pick is already planned for the 27th June. If you would like to join, you can join on their Facebook Page: www.facebook.com/groups/124347599677073 or please contact one of us and we can pass your details onto the group. Please help us keep our villages clean and tidy. Mayor Activities Marie Curie – There is still time for you to sponsor us both as we take on the Marie Curie Peak District Trek on 24th July. This is one of Mayor’s (Cllr Baines) charities for his year in office. You can pledge your support for us both on the Mayor’s Just Giving website: www.justgiving.com/team/ charnwoodmayor The team have so far raised £805 which is amazing, but we always want to raise more money for this great charity. Cllr Baines attended a Loughborough Lions event at the Market in Loughborough on Saturday 12th June to see Vinod Soni ‘Brave the Shave’ and take off his beard for Macmillan Nurses having also walked the canal path from Leicester to Loughborough earlier in the day. It was great to see life return to the Loughborough market, with many stalls present, and lots of socially distanced and masked shoppers. If you have any issues or concerns, we are here to help. Junior Section At Rothley Park Doubles In Two Years Article by Lou Preedy

the juniors out on the course and talk them through the rules of golf and course etiquette. Junior Captain, Eric Walker, has been a Junior Member for some years and is now enjoying his year in office.

The Junior Section at Rothley Park Golf Club is going from strength to strength with junior membership doubling in less than two years. The Board of Directors decided to redice junior subscription fees by 50% and has put a lot of time and effort into ensuring youngsters to thrive under the guidance of dedicated PGA professionals Katie Tebbett and Harry Schiltz.

"My parents got me into golf when I was younger. I started at Park Hill Golf Club on the par three course when I was about 5 and then got more interested when I joined RothleyPark because the junior section helped me to improve. I enjoy the social part as well as playing golf as it is a great way to meet new people and with the handicap system I can play with my friends of different levels and still compete against them."

There will be starters and improvers programmes running throughout the summer with the National Golf Access scheme allowing supervised playing on the course. Club Member, Brett Collins, was recently appointed as Junior Co-ordinator and he will work with a host of club members willing to take

Deborah Taylor

County Councillor for Bradgate Division T: 0116 2350126 E: deborah.taylor@leics.gov.uk I have been very busy over the past month, getting to grips with my new role as Deputy Leader. I have had my diary fill up with multiple new meetings, taking time to meet with new partners, while continuing to support residents through my local case work. It was great to head over to Loughborough University to hold the annual county council meeting on Wednesday 19th May. It was the first meeting held face to face for 14 months and it was so nice to meet up (Covid-safe) as a whole council. We welcomed many new faces and caught up with old friends and colleagues. Cllr Dan Harrison was elected as the 46th chairman of the county council. Retired businessman Dan has been involved in local politics for over 40 years, first being elected as a district councillor in 1976 and to the county council in 2017 to represent Ibstock and Appleby. Cllr Kevin Feltham was elected as the vice-chairman.

• view our proposals for new constituency boundaries. • submit a response directly to us about our proposals. From the second consultation period onwards, you will also be able to: • view the responses submitted by others. • submit a comment directly to us, supporting or contesting a response from somebody else. My county area is proposed to be changed and called the ‘Mid Leicestershire’ Constituency. I have included the link for that area here: www.bcereviews.org.uk/node/6483?postcode=LE77YH Residents are being invited to submit their comments. The consultation is currently open until Monday 2nd August 2021, please ensure your response is received by that date at the latest, or it will not be considered.

As I write we, the country has just been advised that the final step of the Covid restrictions being lifted has been delayed by 4 weeks. I know this will be disappointing for many residents and businesses, but we must ensure we have the virus under control. Please continue to follow the guidance, get vaccinated when called and get yourself regularly tested.

Highway Improvements An extra £5 million has been earmarked to boost road improvements. Residents will have an influence on the improvements made. The extra money is set to be invested in boosting Leicestershire’s roads and environment, bolstering safety and sprucing up our communities.

I was delighted to be invited onto Channel 4’s ‘Steph Packed Lunch’ show on Wednesday 16th June, to join one of our foster children, Salman. Salman was a young refugee who was placed with foster carers in Leicestershire at the age of 12 after a tough start in life. Salman has achieved his dream of qualifying as an architect.

The sizable sum would be ploughed into maintenance – including road repairs, looking after verges, cleaning signs, emptying drains and gullies, refurbishing bus stops and improving rights of way - and into more flashing signs, supporting average speed cameras and other measures to deter speeding motorists.

Salman, now 25, was taken under the wing of a supportive family after arriving in England following a treacherous six-month journey - often walking through snow and mountains in remote areas – escaping from wartorn Afghanistan.

The cash injection also includes a £25,000 pot for every county councillor, enabling local residents to get involved in influencing the improvements that they would like to see where they live. It could be used for a wide range of options, such as flashing signs to reduce speeding, flower beds and benches, as well as minor road repairs and freshening up signs and lines.

He is now supporting the work of ‘Place to Call Home’, a partnership project between local authorities in the East Midlands, led by Leicestershire County Council, aiming to recruit foster carers to support young refugees as they grow and adapt to their new lives. More details about the project can be found on the website: https://placetocallhome.org.uk/ I am sure many of us are watching the UEFA Euros or heard on the news about Christian Eriksen’s cardiac arrest on the pitch. I was very glad to hear the news that he is doing well, and his heart was restarted by an AED, pitch side. A resident rang me and asked if I would include, in my report, the locations of defibrillators in our local area for your information. The Heart Safe website has a list of locations and you can also register any AED that are not listed. Their website can be found here: www.heartsafe.org.uk/aedlocations If you make an emergency call and an AED device is needed, you will also be told the location and the code if the device is in a locked cabinet. School Term Dates Residents are being asked their views on when school holidays in Leicester and Leicestershire should fall. Leicestershire County Council and Leicester City Council have both launched consultations on school term and holiday dates for autumn 2022 through to summer 2027. Each consultation offers the opportunity to choose from several options, including sticking to regular patterns. Both consultation options reflect the same dates. Both authorities are asking for views on whether the term patterns followed by the city and county should match. The closing date for both consultations is midnight on Sunday 18th July. Fill in the consultation and see suggested options for Leicestershire county term dates on: https://www.leicestershire.gov.uk/have-your-say/currentconsultations/have-your-say-on-school-term-time-dates To request a paper copy, call 0116 305 6324 or email: admissions@leics.gov.uk Boundary Review for MP’s Constituencies The Boundary Commission for England is the independent organisation responsible for reviewing Parliamentary constituency boundaries in England. Residents will be able to talk to their county councillor and help shape how the funding is spent in their area. The £5m investment includes: • £2.2m for highway maintenance – managing grass verges, improving road signs and lines, revamping bus stops, improving accessibility to our rights of way • £1m to cut speeding in communities - flashing signs, traffic calming and supporting our average speed camera work • £1.4m to boost local areas – smaller scale improvements that enhance communities The proposals will be discussed by the council’s cabinet on 22nd June 2021. Local Bus Services The county council is working closely with local bus operators to come up with bold plans to improve public transport – and encouraging more people to use it. The Government has pledged £3 billion to help progress these plans across the country – and Leicestershire is aiming to secure a fair share of the funding. However, to secure this funding, the council must develop a Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP). The council needs input to help develop their plan. It wants to find out what people think would improve local bus services - and what would encourage them to use local buses more. The council would like to hear from people who already use buses, those who currently don’t as well as from public, private, and voluntary organisations. There is a questionnaire at www.leicestershire.gov.uk/bus-strategy-survey for residents to have their say. The closing date is Friday 30th July. New Employment Scheme Work + is a free one-to-one service offering support, advice and information to people looking for secure paid employment or training. Work + is open to everyone – from those who have never been employed to those who have lost their jobs due to the pandemic, been furloughed or who are at risk of redundancy. It will also help college leavers, graduates, and agency staff on zero hour or temporary contracts. Qualified personal advisers will offer impartial and professional advice to people from all backgrounds and support people on a one-to-one basis. Appointments will initially be offered online due to the pandemic but later

in the year face to face meetings will be held in local libraries and adult learning centres. Everyone who signs up to the scheme will have the opportunity to have a tailored work plan drawn up for them, including clear targets and steps to achieve their goal. Help will be given with CV and letter writing skills, job searches, interview techniques and digital training, self-employment advice and business support. The Work+ team will also work directly with employers who may be in the unfortunate position of making redundancies and want to support their staff to find new employment. To find out more or to register your interest contact the Work+ team on 0800 988 0308 or visit:www.work-plus.co.uk Updates Newtown Linford Lining – All the double yellow lining has now been put down following the public consultation. I have received multiple emails from residents, some who are very happy with the lining and some that are not. I am continuing to work to try and sort out solutions for some residents who have been impacted by this decision. Newtown Linford Flooding - Following the severe flooding experienced by many residents last year, we finally managed to arrange a site visit (delayed due to Covid-19) Present was myself, Cllr Snartt, LCC Flood officer, affected residents and Jelsons (the land owner). It was a positive site meeting and action was agreed moving forward. I will continue to ensure that the agreed actions are carried out, as promised.

Easing Of Restrictions Heralds Local Classic & Sports Car Club’s Return To Show Circuit Article by Andrew Goodman

On the Sunday 30th May Bank Holiday Weekend, Charnwood-based North Leicester MG Club celebrated the easing of Coivid-19 restrictions by exhibiting a selection of their members’ cars on a designated club stand at a classic vehicle show. This was their first such outing for nearly two years. Held at the Rutland County Showground just outside of Oakham, the venue’s inaugural Classic Wheels Show attracted a number of car clubs from the East Midlands and East of England, who between them represented various British and continental marques such as Mini, Ford, Triumph and Fiat. The North Leicester MG Club were one of several with displays of sports cars bearing the MG Octagon emblem, with similar clubs from Peterborough and Cambridge also in attendance. Between them, the club section of the show displayed around two hundred vehicles from the last 70 years of automotive history. The Leicestershire MG club’s offering consisted of a broad spectrum of MG cars, with examples from most decades from the 1950s until the early 2000s. The display included several examples of the best-selling MG B model (produced between 1962 and 1981), a couple of the MG marque’s last British-built sports car model (an MG F and an MG TF), together with two MG As (from the late 50s and early 60s), an MG Midget (from the mid1970s), and an MG Y-Type (a model offered between 1947 and 1953). Around four hundred other vehicles at the show had been driven to the event by individual owners, and included cars dating back to the 1920s, so in terms of the turnout of about six hundred vehicles in all, the show was a great success. Add to that the fabulous sunshine which dispersed the last of the clouds at about 9:30 am, and then lasted all day, and the fact that the Bank Holiday Weekend was the first since most of the stricter government guidelines had been dropped, the public responded by turning out in their thousands to admire the vast array of automotive machinery. Live music and stalls offering auto jumble items and refreshments were on hand to anyone who needed a break from the seemingly endless supply of automotive offerings. The North Leicester Mg Club meets at Lingdale Golf Club near Woodhouse Eaves on the third Wednesday of each month, and normal meetings are expected to resume on July 20th 2021. Visit classicwheelsrutland.co.uk to find about the show and nothleicestermg.org.uk to find out about the North Leicester MG Club.

It was lovely to meet other members in person on a beautiful June evening, when the Society’s Peter Smith led a walk exploring the changing landscape between Thurcaston and Beaumont Leys. The layout of roads we see today dates from 1799, when Enclosure completely changed the way the land around Thurcaston was farmed. The Enclosure Commissioners took the strips of land held in communally worked, open fields and re-arranged them into privately owned blocks. At the same, they specified where roads, footpaths and other rights of way should run. We do not have any detailed maps from before that time but a small scale map published in Nichols’ History of Leicestershire and the Enclosure Award itself give us some clues. The village was clustered round All Saints’ Church, with an area of common land or “waste” where Rectory Lane now is. Roads radiated out from here to neighbouring villages. In a field next to the church, a “hollow way” has been worn by the passage of feet and hooves on the path to Coffin Bridge, which was the route used by residents of Cropston to attend the church or bring their dead for burial. Near Park View Riding Stables we crossed a section of the old parish boundary, marked by a wide, double hedge. The boundary was later moved to run along the backs of the houses in Thurcaston. The fields in between now fall within Leicester City and the City Council’s draft Local Plan proposes that 600 houses could be built there in the next 15 years. The A46 Western Bypass was carved through the area in 1995. Beyond it, we entered Castle Hill Park, where Leicester University is currently running an archaeology summer school to excavate the site that the Knights Hospitaller occupied from 1240 to 1482. The system of paying annual tithes to the church was abolished at Enclosure. In compensation, the Rector was allocated additional “glebe” land along the west side of Leicester Road to support his income. A small pool at the back of the modern Glebelands estate is the source of the Thistle Brook, which runs through Thurcaston, crossing Leicester Road at the mini roundabout. The pool also marks the corner of the old parish boundaries with Beaumont Leys and Birstall. Alongside the Thistle Brook is a strip of land that was undeveloped until very recently. It marks the line of the Old Leicester Road and a public footpath still follows it. The landscape is ever-changing and we had to detour around the latest phase of the Ashton Green development before we could rejoin the footpath to pass under the A46 and across rough fields to Rectory Lane. Here, beside the path and now overgrown, there is another hollow way to remind us how many other people have walked this route in the past. On 20th July, Anne Horton will lead us on a gentler walk to see points of interest along the Main Street in Swithland. www.thurcastoncropstonhistory.org.uk

David Snartt Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate T: 01530 244804 E: cllr.david.snartt@charnwood.gov.uk

Planning Appeal. I have sent my submission about the appeal to develop up to 36 dwellings on land adjacent to Maplewell Road, Woodhouse Eaves to the Planning Inspectorate. In my submission I again asked that this appeal was decided by an Informal Hearing, due to the significant number of objections raised by interested parties when the planning application was decided by Charnwood Borough Council. I have received the following information back from the Planning Inspectorate: ‘At this stage though, the arguments around these objections appear to have been clearly expressed by the parties and the Inspector considers the questioning of either side would not be necessary’. Also stating: ‘Whilst the Inspector is aware of the representations by residents and does not question the strength of local feeling, again their concerns are apparent and clear’. I am disappointed with this outcome, I do believe this is a missed opportunity for local residents to be more involved in the decision making process, I recall such was the interest locally, over 100 people attended the last Informal Hearing in the Village Hall. In my submission, I referred to the outcome from the last dismissed appeal. Stating that the previous Inspector concluded the site would amount to an unsustainable form of development. The proposal would contrast strongly with the narrow linear development which characterises Maplewell Road travelling out of the village. The proposed development would replace this with a more intensive suburban form of development which would significantly extend the physical extend of the settlement. In my view, the current proposal, albeit for 14 less dwellings, does not overcome these previous findings. I also referred to the Woodhouse Neighbourhood Plan, noting within the Plan, consideration has been given to find sites for development within the limits to development. Proposed sites have come forward that, in my view, will accommodate the housing needs of the Parish in future years without devastating the rural setting of the village, by planned development and not speculative piecemeal development that does not conform to the Local Plan. My full submission to the Inspectorate can be viewed on the Charnwood Borough Council’s website. Flooding Issues. It is possibly not the best time to be talking about flooding, but you may recall it was last year in June when homes were flooded in the village of Newtown Linford. I am grateful to Deborah Taylor for arranging a meeting one year on to look at ways to reduce the risk of flooding, especially where the worst problems occurred last June. Some actions have already taken place, but it was thought more was needed to overcome the concerns of residents. Interested parties were present at the meeting, including residents who were affected by the flooding. Several actions were agreed to take place. Therefore, I am hopeful progress will be made in improving the causes of flooding in the village. I am also grateful to a resident who uncovered a manhole which has a 12 inch clay pipe going into an old culvert, this could be a significant find in helping with the ongoing solutions to the flooding problems in this area of the village. Review of Parliamentary Constituencies. The Boundary Commission for England has published its initial proposals for new constituency boundaries. They are inviting the public to view and provide feedback on the proposed boundaries as part of the first eight week consultation process. The 2023 review was formally launched in January this year. The Commission is required to ensure that the number of electors in each constituency is more equal. They are undertaking an independent review of all constituency boundaries in England and will present final recommendations to Parliament by July 2023. Members of the public are encouraged to visit www.bcereviews.org.uk to view maps showing the proposed new boundaries and provide feedback before the consultation closes on 2nd August 2021. People can comment on anything from where the proposed new boundary lines are to the names of constituencies. There are big changes proposed for our area, with the current Charnwood constituency split. The eastern part, which includes Syston and Thurmaston going to a new Melton constituency. Our part, which includes my Ward of Forest Bradgate is proposed to be in a new constituency named Mid Leicestershire, which will join up with areas to the south and west of Leicester City.

18 | www.openboxpromotions.co.uk/news

Living in Newtown Linford for many years it seems the village changes nearly every time there is a review. In my early years, the village was in the Melton constituency, then Bosworth, changing lastly to Charnwood. Conferment of the Freedom of the Borough. At the time of writing it is proposed that Charnwood Borough Council at its Full Council meeting on the 21st June, gives consideration to conferring the honour of Honorary Freeman on Leicester City Football Club in view of their eminent services to the Borough and its people. Subject to the resolution being passed at the meeting by not less than two-thirds of the members, the ceremony to take place at a special meeting of the Council on 6th September 2021. Leicester City Football Club have now won English football’s three major honours, the Premier, FA Cup and League Cup, across its 137 year history. This year winning the Emirates FA Cup for the very first time, after previous visits to Wembley ended in disappointment. The Foxes’ new training facility is a £100m development based within the Charnwood Borough Council boundary and the club have developed strong community links. Leicester City Women’s team have played their home games in Quorn this season, and have also delivered inspirational success with promotion to the Women’s Super League. Therefore, on this basis it is a fitting tribute that the Club be conferred this civic honour. I will keep you informed on the outcome of the meeting. If you need to contact me on any issues, please write to 10 Groby Lane, Newtown Linford, Leicester. LE6 0HH e-mail cllr.david.snartt@charnwood. gov.uk or telephone 01530 244804.

Freedom Of The Borough Proposed For Leicester City FC Article by Charnwood Borough Council

Charnwood Borough Council is proposing to grant FA Cup-winning Leicester City FC the Freedom of the Borough.

Another Anstey Rugby Victory At Aylestone Athletic Article by Chris Apperley

The honour, the highest the Council can bestow, would recognise the club’s incredible success in recent years and its connection to Charnwood. The 2016 Premier League champions opened a £100 million training facility in the borough in 2020 at Seagrave and title-winning Leicester City Women FC are also based locally, playing home matches in Quorn. The proposal will be considered by councillors on June 21 and if approved, an extraordinary meeting of the Council will be held in September. Council leader Jonathan Morgan said: “Charnwood has a strong connection to Leicester City Football Club thanks to the training ground and it is also home to the women’s team. We feel their success in recent years should be recognised. “We are proud to have the club in our borough and we are proud of their achievements. “We hope awarding them Freedom of the Borough will be another title that they can add to their growing roll of honour.” The Local Government Act 1972 allows the Council to confer the title of Honorary Freeman on “persons who have, in the opinion of the Council have rendered eminent services to the Borough”. The Council, on rare occasions, may choose to confer the Freedom of the Borough on organisations or objects where they are organisations linked to the borough which have rendered eminent services to the Borough. There must be a resolution passed by not less than two-thirds of the members present at a meeting of the Council specially convened for the purpose of granting the Freedom of the Borough. Decisions to agree nominations will be made at a specially convened Full Council meeting for this purpose by a vote of not less than two-thirds of the members present and voting Freedom of the Borough is the highest honour which will only be awarded in exceptional circumstances where the prospective recipient is an individual or organisation of distinction that has rendered eminent services to the borough. They will have demonstrated outstanding achievements in the borough and/ or on the international stage which have brought pride and satisfaction to the borough. The report to Council can be read here: https://bit.ly/359u7wO

Anstey RFC followed up their stunning win at Vipers on 8th May with a 2922 victory versus Aylestone Athletic playing on a 4G synthetic turf pitch at Beaumont Leys. Something totally new for our club Some sore skin all round from the sand mixture on the pitch, but our dedicated squad nevertheless put in an excellent performance. At the time of writing (mid June) there have not been any more matches to report on, but some of our squad have guested at other friendly local clubs and Wednesday night training is still attracting record numbers all developing skills for the future. We have two more games booked to finish of this much truncated season, Home against Mellish on 19th June and away at their Mapperley, Nottinghamshire ground a couple of weeks later. Unfortunately, we can’t use our own Home Ground at Link Road Playing Fields for the game against Mellish as we still cannot gain access to Martin School’s changing rooms. Let us hope by September that Home games can be achieved. Fortunately, as we have good relationships with other Leicestershire Rugby Clubs we have been able to use the pitch and facilities at Old Newtonians RFC at Leicester Forest East for our Home Game this weekend. It will great to be able to see Rugby played again in our village in the not to distant future. Last week the Rugby Football Union confirmed that we are still on D2 as per the ‘Return to Rugby Roadmap’ version 2. We are following the D2 guidelines where the temporary laws mean no Scrums and Mauls, but hope for an announcement soon to move onto the next stage towards normal service. Anstey RFC is back in the Leicestershire Leagues, Group C, come the new 2021/22 season, all being well starting in September.

Buddy2buddy Support Launched For Ex-Service Personnel Article by Kartik Bhalla Description automatically generated with medium confidenceAn innovative method of mental health support for veterans has been launched by the Armed Forces service at Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust (LPT).

The Buddy2Buddy café style virtual drop ins aim to connect, support and empower veterans and their families, creating a safe space where people can relax and share experiences to support their emotional wellbeing. The project recognises the additional risk of social isolation through the pandemic and the disproportionate impact this has on the mental wellbeing of Armed Forces veterans, many of whom struggle to cope with the emotional impact of their experiences. The project follows a successful £16,000 funding bid from the Armed Forces Covenant Fund, supported by LPT’s charity Raising Health, for a year-long pilot. Armed Forces Lead, Brendan Daly said: “We have an active network of armed forces champions across the Trust, many of whom have served in the armed forces or have loved ones continuing to serve, who are giving their time to raise awareness and develop ways that we can support local people. The Buddy2Buddy sessions are an example of this. The sessions have been based on a US model of volunteer support, developed alongside service users. Buddy2Buddy reflects the ‘buddy/buddy checks’ the British Military are taught when fitting equipment.” At the official launch event on Wednesday Image16 June 2021, one service user shared his experience of attending the Buddy2Buddy café. He said: “Joining the Buddy2Buddy cafes was the best thing I did. They listened and understood my experiences of suffering from poor mental health, and it reminded me of the comradeship I felt when serving in the Royal Air Force. If you know anyone who may benefit from this initiative, please spread the word and ask them to get in touch.” Trust chair, Cathy Ellis said: “I’m pleased to see the launch of this initiative which builds on our commitment and work so far with veterans. We are committed to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of Armed Forces veterans, as well as their families, and helping to reduce the stigma around mental illness associated with military experience. We are signed up to the Armed Forces Covenant and have achieved the Gold Standard in 2019. Across all of our services, we are working hard to ensure veterans, reservists, military families and staff are supported.” The Raising Health charity appeal aims to assist with the therapeutic recovery of former soldiers, sailors and airmen in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. Blaby Ice House Works Complete Article by Ian Cockerill

Restored to its former glory after more than 25 years, work on the historic Ice House at Blaby District Council’s Bouskell Park, Blaby, has been completed. Work began on the Ice House last autumn and included the installation of a new retaining structure, rebuilding the tunnel entrance, as well as a new door and dome cover. Railings, landscaping of the area and signage were also included as part of the extensive redevelopment. First built around 1843, the Ice House allowed the wealthy residents of nearby Blaby Hall to have a more varied and exclusive diet with ice from the next door pond. £156,000 of the £173,000 project was supported by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, with the rest funded by Blaby District Council. The restoration overcame a number of obstacles, including the Coronavirus pandemic, continued difficult weather and unforeseen structural issues to the structure of the dome. The Ice House was officially opened by Albero Costa, MP for South Leicestershire, Councillor Terry Richardson, Leader of Blaby District Council and Councillor Sharon Coe, Portfolio Holder for Health, Wellbeing, Community Engagement and Business Support Councillor Coe said: “We have been so excited to follow this project through from the initial Heritage Lottery Fund award to our now-completed Ice House. “Restoring the Ice House is part of our Tourism initiative to showcase Blaby District is a great place to live, work and visit, and a huge amount of work has gone into restoring the Ice House to its former glory. “We cannot wait to show the Ice House to both residents and visitors to the district as well as local schoolchildren, and we’re also looking forward to our upcoming Community Dig taking place at the end of June.” Tours of the Ice House will start in mid-June and anyone interested in booking a tour to see inside the Ice House and learn more about the historic structure can visit www.visitblaby.org.uk The Community Dig will take place in the last week of June in partnership with the University of Leicester Archaeological Services team, and will be hosted with Covid-safe guidelines in place to ensure the dig is as safe as possible. A video of the restored Ice House is also available to view on YouTube via https://youtu.be/IbaPxEG_hsc
