Time For Tee?

Article by Rachel Hargrave The gradual easing of COVID-19 measure has meant that local parent-led charity, Alex’s Wish, has begun planning out their fundraising calendar once again. One key event for them is their Annual Alex’s Wish Golf Day which, this year, takes place on Thursday 23rd September at Rothley Park Golf Course. Zoe Edwards, Fundraising and Marketing Manager at Alex’s Wish is looking for golf day hole sponsors. Says Zoe, “We are so fortunate to have our headline sponsor in place and thank Strategic Insurance Services for their support. Alongside our headline sponsor we also offer a variety of other sponsorship opportunities, one of the most popular being our golf day hole sponsorship. With 18 holes we’ve got plenty of opportunities for local businesses to sponsor a hole for just £100. In return they’ll have their logo displayed prominently at the hole, put marketing material into our golfers goodie bags and recognition on Alex’s Wish website with a link to their company. Our Annual Golf Day is always incredibly popular, and we have a lot of interest already expressed in the event which we feel confident that we’ll fill team-wise, though at this stage we do have some four balls left. We’re also looking for a brunch sponsor, meal sponsor and refreshments sponsor. “At Alex’s Wish we’re really keen to ensure that our sponsors get maximum exposure and work closely with them to ensure their goals are achieved. We’d love to hear from anyone who’s interested in either attending our Annual Golf Day or in sponsoring a hole or, indeed, in any of our other sponsorship opportunities. I’m really looking forward to running this event again. It’s good to be back!” To find out more about the Alex’s Wish and their Annual Golf Day please visit https://alexswish.co.uk

Protecting Your Family’s Inheritance Article by Klara Hesling

Our frontline staff follow Government guidelines for visiting you in your home and they are in the vaccination program with second course completed. LevLaw Ltd remains here for you. Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually.

Norwood Press Donation Update Article by Norwood Press

So far we have managed to help many groups and charities in the area. Here are some of the groups we have helped so far: • Shepshed Litter Pickers - New equipment and Hi-Vis jackets • Ratby Band - New junior / beginner music • 1st Anstey Guides - Days out and camp • Passion Youth Project Shepshed - New waffle maker for their cafe • Shepshed Toy Library - Childrens toys • Linda Barks - Knitting supplies • Glenfield Bowling Club - New signage • Shepshed Dolphin Swimming Group - Leaflet printing • Jean Bates Yarn Angels - Knitting supplies

But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased’s share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children’s inheritance is protected. This last point can be particular interest to couples who have come together and have children with different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensuring that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property, they can still sell the property and the proceeds to be used to purchase a new property, the terms of the Trust remain over the new property.

LEAFLETS - BUSINESS CARDS - LETTERHEADS MAGAZINES - BROCHURES - BOOKLETS "Thank you for your extremely kind donation. We are very lucky to have the lovely Emma and Andy who own Knotty Knits and Creative Krafts in Loughborough supporting us and they have given us an amazing deal on 100 balls of assorted baby wool for £100 ! This will be used to create baby clothes, baby blankets and small knitted toys for InterCare based in Syston. This charity raises money to send medical aid to hospitals and clinics in Africa. Each box is lined with a blanket and the small knitted items are used as packing instead of bubble wrap or polystyrene which can't be recycled there. It will also be used to make warm baby hats for asylum seeker and refugee families who arrive here with virtually nothing but what they stand up in. Thank you again Norwood Press for this donation. It will help many people who through no fault of their own are not able to help themselves. Our very best wishes for another 70 years in business." Jean Bates and Yarn Angels

Deborah Taylor Borough Councillor for Anstey

T: 0116 2350126 E: cllr.deborah.taylor@charnwood.gov.uk The Mayor of Charnwood Borough Council We were both delighted to be part of the Charnwood Borough Council meeting, held on 17th May 2021 at the Town Hall, Loughborough, that saw Cllr Baines appointed as Mayor of Charnwood for the 2021/22 Council Year. Cllr Baines will be supported by his wife Dr Ning Baines as Mayoress. Further details are available here: www.charnwood.gov.uk/ news/2021/05/18/mayoral_chains_ handed_to_professor We wish them a successful year as they attend many events within the mayoral year representing the Borough of Charnwood. This is a particularly important year as the country begins to come out of Covid-19 restrictions and start on the road to recovery. Cllr Baines’ theme for the year is renewal: for our businesses, of our social lives, physical and mental welfare, and for our work and employment more generally. The Mayor’s charities for the year will be Marie Curie, who work hard in Leicester & Rutland (and elsewhere) to support people with terminal illnesses, and Living Without Abuse, a domestic abuse charity based out of Loughborough. The Mayor and Mayoress have already agreed to do a marathon walk of 26.2m in the Peak District in aid of Marie Curie. Lateral Flow Tests The Government has made getting a lateral flow test even easier than before and you can order kits online to be delivered to your home. They are for anyone who: • does not have coronavirus symptoms • is 18 or older • has not been told to self-isolate • cannot get tests from your work, school, college, or university There are various ways to access a lateral flow test. You can order kits online to be sent to your home address. You may also be able to collect them from a pharmacy or test site. Visit: www.gov.uk/order-coronavirus-rapid-lateral-flow-tests If you want to get a test at a test centre there are various ones across the county, including in Loughborough. Visit: www.leicestershire.gov.uk/coronavirus-covid-19/rapid-asymptomatic-testing If you have been vaccinated, please continue to be tested as you can still transmit the virus.

New Council Roles There has been a refresh of committee positions at Charnwood Borough Council for the new year. Cllr Taylor steps down as Community Safety Partnership Chair (to take on a new role at Leicestershire County Council) and will become part of the Finance and Performance Scrutiny Committee. Policing Inspector Mark Botte has been the Neighbourhood Policing Area (NPA) Commander for Charnwood for the past two years. On Monday 17th May Inspector Botte moved onto another role within Leicestershire Police. Inspector Botte has made a huge difference to policing in Charnwood and we have seen overall crime continue to reduce under Inspector Botte leadership. Inspector Matt Oswin has now taken over as NPA Commander until August 2021, when a permanent Commander will be moved into post. Covid-19 Covid-19 Restrictions were eased from 17th May 2021. Further details are shown in the printed image in this report. There is also the reminder that vaccinations are now being offered to those over 34 years of age (correct at time of going to print but changing quickly). There has also been the announcement that the gap between the first and second vaccine doses will shrink to eight weeks (rather than 12 weeks) for over-50s. People are being contacted within that group, but Deborah has managed to change her appointment online and bring her second dose forward by four weeks. The Charnwood Gardener Article by Peter Flood

Thurcaston & Cropston Local History Society Article by Peter Smith

Returning after our Easter break, we met once more via Zoom and welcomed Robert Mee from Heanor, Derbyshire, whose subject was “Inn signs and Local History”. Most villages and towns have pubs or inns; can their signs and names provide clues that are helpful to local historians? Care needs to be taken because the names may just be fanciful and can be changed at the whim of the owner but in some cases they do point to aspects of history that might otherwise be overlooked. Bars and other drinking establishments have existed since at least Roman times and they have always been identified by signs – not least because most people were unable to read written names. Vines or grapes were common signs on the continent but in Britain an alehouse was often indicated by a holly bush outside the door and the Holly Bush remains quite a common pub name today.

Death To Pests (A Poem) Early this morning I pulled on my boots Time to check on my seedlings and shoots! I bounded outside and ran to my patch And in my excitement left the gate off the latch. Reaching the beds I recoiled with a wail In place of my veg were a fine crop of snails. Those slithering beggars had gobbled the lot! All my hard work! They’d laid waste to my plot! Shortly returning with poisons and pellets, The sight that befell me, well, I hardly can tell it. Seven fat pigeons sat chewing my cabbage – My beautiful brassicas! Completely ravaged. I chased them away, spraying curses (and mace) And promptly fell painfully on to my face. My foot in a hole, as yet unseen, Burrowing rabbits where my carrots had been! Lying in agony, cursing to god, I was suddenly trampled by the neighbour’s big dog. The gate I’d left open – he’d spotted his chance! I whimpered quite wetly as he watered the grass. The books always say ‘work with nature – it’s your friend!’ I’ll never be friendly with nature again. Next year when others buy seeds and lawmowers, I’ll be in the market for guns and flamethrowers. JUNE TIP: Work with nature – it’s your friend! Joking aside, it can be very discouraging when pests wipe out all of your hard work. There are no easy solutions, but encouraging biodiversity in the garden can reduce insect pest populations. Tasty sacrificial crops such as nasturtiums can keep slugs and snails away from those meant for human consumption. A physical barrier is the only defence against larger creatures like rabbits and pigeons – a proper fruit and veg cage is worth the investment.

The most popular inn signs are symbols that indicate allegiance to the monarchy, e.g. the Red Lion (James I or John of Gaunt); the White Hart (Richard II); the Royal Oak (Charles II); the Swan (Henry IVVII); or simply the Crown. At a more local level, heraldic symbols may tell you that the inn formed part of the estate of an aristocratic family. Some are straightforward, e.g. the Cavendish Arms, but others need more interpretation, e.g. the Peacock was an emblem of the Dukes of Rutland and the Snake (from which Derbyshire’s Snake Pass took its name) referred to the crest of the Dukes of Devonshire. Other innkeepers preferred to reflect village life with names such as the Plough or the Wheatsheaf and such names sometimes point to lost local industries such as the Lime Kiln. Many landlords also had second occupations, which may be indicated by names like the Blacksmith’s Arms or the Baker’s Arms. (They often followed the familiar pattern of adding “Arms” even when no actual coat of arms was involved.) The Chequers suggests that a simple banking service (an exchequer) was once provided there. When a network of turnpike roads was developed, coaching inns grew up to serve them, with names such as the Horse & Groom or the Gate Inn (where a toll gate would have been located). The Boat Inn may indicate that there was once a canal nearby and there are many surviving Railway Inns and Station Hotels that have outlived the local rail service. Pubs named after famous people (e.g. Lord Nelson) hint at the date of their establishment and the named person sometimes had a local connection. (The Wetherspoons pub chain is particularly good at maintaining this tradition. For example, their “Lord Keeper of the Great Seal” in Oadby is named after Nathan Wright, who was born in Thurcaston, held that office 1700-5, and later became Oadby’s lord of the manor.) Even a simple name like the New Inn should prompt research into where the old inn was! Sadly, on this occasion we could not follow Robert’s talk by discussing it over a pint but we hope that the Society will resume face-to-face meetings soon. Our planned programme of events for the summer and autumn continues to be subject to revision but details will be posted on our website: www.thurcastoncropstonhistory.org.uk

Deborah Taylor

County Councillor for Bradgate Division T: 0116 2350126 E: deborah.taylor@leics.gov.uk A very busy month, but I am slowly catching up with my emails and ongoing case work. There may be a longer than usual wait for responses, but I am working hard on this. I have also picked up several issues as I have been out campaigning and talking to residents, I will be following this work up as well. Further restrictions have also been relaxed but please take care. If you are offered a vaccination, please take up the offer. We have a new variant in circulation and the data so far suggests that vaccinated people will be more protected from this variant than unvaccinated people. We need to enjoy meeting up with our families and friends but please be cautious about mixing too much until we have further data on the spread of this new variant of Covid-19 and until you are fully vaccinated.

• North Leicestershire and Rutland Coroner’s Office. I am looking forward to learning more about the above areas in the coming weeks. I have printed the results for the Bradgate Division and the whole of the County Council results for you. Police and Crime Commissioner Elections The Police and Crime Commissioner elections were delayed by a year, due to the pandemic. They were then held on the same day as the County Council elections, with the votes being counted on Saturday 8th May. I was delighted that the Conservative candidate, Rupert Matthews, was duly elected with a majority of 39,354 votes. I look forward to working closely with Rupert over the next four years. The focus will be on rural crime and making rural villages safer. Woodhouse Airman I was delighted to see the new Aircrew memorial bench and plaque in situ which commemorates the tragic loss of life when a Wellington aircraft, on a training mission, crashed in a nearby field in Woodhouse during the Second World War. The plaque holds the names of the three young airmen who were killed in the tragedy– Warrant Officer Donald Anthony Gee, Flight Sergeant Albert Valentine Barkel and Flight Sergeant Leslie Jones. Having the memorial seat and plaque in such a prominent position, in the centre of Woodhouse, will be a constant reminder of the sacrifices made by both servicemen and civilians during this war. On the side of the plaque is a QR code that you can scan, and this downloads a commemorative book with further information about the crash and the airmen. It’s well worth a read. Foster Carers An appeal has been launched to find additional foster carers for teenagers. There are almost 700 children in the care of Leicestershire County Council and of this number more than half - 398 - are aged between ten and seventeen years old.

Local Elections I just wanted to start by saying thank you for everyone that came out on election day and voted for me. It was great to see so many friendly residents outside the polling stations across my divisions on the day and during the campaign period. The polling stations ran amazingly well in a Covid safe manner and everyone I have spoken to since felt very safe coming out to vote. The election count was a little different, with a lot less people present but, nevertheless, ran extremely well and a lot quicker than I thought. I want to say another thank you to all the staff at the polling stations and at the count for their hard work. I was delighted to be re-elected to represent the Bradgate Division at County Hall. It is an honour and a privilege, and I look forward to the next four years. I will be available to support all residents, whether you voted for me or not. Following the elections, I also decided to put myself forward for the role of Deputy Leader of Leicestershire County Council. Again, I was delighted to be supported by Conservative colleagues at County Hall and was elected as Deputy Leader. This is a huge honour and over the next few weeks, I will be on a steep learning curve, getting to grips with the role. To give this role the full attention that it needs and deserves, I have taken a step back from some of my roles at Charnwood Borough Council. I have stood down from my role as Community Safety Partnership Chair and will now sit on one of the scrutiny committees. I have retained my role as Lead Member for Children and Families and Community Safety at County Hall. I have also gained another area of work into my portfolio, Regulation Services. This includes: • Trading Standards • Registration Services (birth, marriages, deaths, citizenship)

The call for people to come forward and offer their care has been made by the County Council as Foster Care Fortnight got underway on 10th May. Leicestershire County Council hopes to recruit mainstream foster carers and supported lodgings providers for teenagers, as well as specialist foster carers to care for some of Leicestershire’s most vulnerable young people. To find out more, visit www.fosteringleicestershire.com or call the Fostering Team for an informal chat on 0116 305 05 05. Updates Newtown Linford Lining – As per the sealed order, the double yellow lining will be put in place on the whole of Main Street as published. I am now working with the County Council highway department to look at an alternative area for on-street parking on upper Main Street to help residents in this area that have limited off street parking. Cropston Lining – The comments received during the consultation have been reviewed. The majority of the comments submitted were against the scheme so the highway department at the County Council has decided to not make any changes to the on-street parking restriction already in place. Causeway Lane, Cropston – There are still concerns over the parking in this area and I am looking into what options might be available. Gorse Hill, Anstey – I have received complaints from residents in this area, regarding the continued noise from the A46. There is no noise bunding in the area (i.e. use of mounds of soil to reduce the sound carried). I am in correspondence with Highways England (who are responsible for the A46) but I would be keen to hear from other residents in this area regarding noise levels. If you have any issues or concerns, I’m here to help. Deborah

Restrictions are lifting, places are opening, and plans are being made & if everything goes to plan the Anstey Summer Gala is back! As things continue to progress and the road map is opening up more and more, we have decided to have a go at planning and running a Summer Gala this year, even if it is a little bit different to normal. We will endeavour to make it as enjoyable as all the ones previously, even if we do have to alter it slightly due to any restrictions we may still have at that time. However, to achieve this, it takes a committee of dedicated people, and that's where you come in! The Anstey Gala Committee is always looking for new people and new ideas, to ensure the Gala can continue to take place year after year. It might be you have the time to join in with the meetings or maybe you can just spare a few hours on the day of the Gala, either way all help is welcome and very much appreciated, and as they say many hands make light work. We currently meet once a month on Thursday evenings via Zoom. If this sounds like something you are interested in please get in touch via ansteygala@aol. com and remember to make sure to pencil Saturday September 4th 2021 as Anstey Summer Gala Day in your diary!

June 10th would have been the 100th birthday of His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh. One of his lasting legacies is the ‘Duke of Edinburgh Scheme’ set up in 1956, initially in Great Britain; later expanding to over 130 countries worldwide.

Local Company Celebrates Four Years Of ‘Outstanding’ Care Article by Katya Joyce

Local home care provider, Home Instead Charnwood, is celebrating its fourth year of providing high-quality care services to seniors across North Leicestershire. Launched in 2017 by owner, Charlotte Johnson, the company brought Home Instead’s signature relationship-led home care to Charnwood, Loughborough, Coalville and the surrounding areas. One year after launching, the company was rated as ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), achieving the highest possible rating for its home care services. Now leading a team of 62, who care for 87 clients across the area, Charlotte’s business has become a real pillar of the community. The company celebrated its fourth birthday in style, hosting a small COVIDsafe party for staff at the office. The company has grown so much that it is relocating next month, and so this party will be the last time the team all gather at the office. Charlotte commented: “I launched my business after a long career in the manufacturing, design and retail industry. I wanted a new challenge where I could apply my skill set and really make a difference to people’s lives. I’m proud to say that the care we provide really does make a difference to the lives of older people - we treat them with the time and respect they deserve, keeping them safe and cared for in the comfort of their own homes. I’m also so proud of my amazing team, who I couldn’t have done this without. Our dedicated caregivers provide CQC outstanding care and are supported by our strong office team who support us in delivering quality care.” To learn more about the home care services that Home Instead Charnwood provides, ranging from companionship and home help, to more specialist dementia and post-operation care, please call 01162165306 or visit www. homeinstead.co.uk/charnwood-loughborough-coalville

The scheme is for 14- to 24-year-olds and is competed at four progressive levels; bronze, silver and gold. Each of the levels involves four sections Volunteering, Physical, Skills and Expedition. A fifth section, Residential, is added for Gold level. Below is the invitation of Anstey’s Arthur Baggott, who received the gold award from The Duke of Edinburgh in 1963. As can be seen from the following photograph, Arthur was no stranger to awards as earlier in the year he had been one of five Anstey Boys Brigade members to receive the Queen’s Award, the highest award that can be achieved.

Anstey WI

Article by Sheila Timms One of the few advantages of meeting on Zoom is that it is easier to reschedule a meeting when important individuals are unable to participate. So it is that Anstey WI’s May meeting will take place after the deadline for this issue. However, I can report that members have been very enthusiastic about the appeal by last month’s speaker, Tracey Pollard of Age UK Leicester, for the Big Knit. Between them our members have made well over 50 hats for Innocent smoothies so far. The photographs show Sheryl Bramley with a few of her crochet creations, and a selection of other ladies’ work. Great Central Railway Back On Track Article by Michael Stokes

Let’s hope that things will be much easier by our Open Garden weekend and we can take our small part in reintroducing some normality as responsibly as we can.

The Great Central Railway, one of Leicestershire’s most treasured and popular tourist attractions restarted steam train services on the 17th April and has already welcomed more than a thousand visitors in the two weekends since reopening. Their picturesque trackside cafes at Rothley and Quorn have also reopened for takeaway and patio service at the weekends.

We will need to consider the concerns and the health of the garden owners and the garden visitors. This may result in restricted or controlled numbers on the day to allow for safe entry in some circumstances, or oneway systems around some gardens. Entrance fees will be £5 to avoid any loose change.

The Railway is now looking forward to the next phase of recovery from Covid measures which is the 21st May when first class dining services, on train afternoon teas and fish and chip trains can be re-started as well as the cafés opened for full service and to the 25th May when the summer midweek timetable recommences.

Yes, that’s right; Thurcaston and Cropston Open Gardens 2021. We are currently planning on having an Open Gardens event on the weekend of 26th and 27th June 2021. In the current situation, the plan for coming out of the necessary Covid restrictions makes it possible for us to plan a 2021 Open Gardens event.

At this stage it is too early to say in any detail. We may even have to cancel at the last minute. Watch our Thurcaston and Cropston Open Gardens website www.tcog.org.uk and the local noticeboards for updated information in May and June. Our chosen charity continues to be Leicestershire Air Ambulance, and we hope to help them raise some much needed funds. Like many charities, they have suffered over the last year. So, as our gardeners plan for those brilliant displays of flowers and vegetables, sowing seeds and banishing those weeds, we hope you will pencil the dates in your diary, and we will all keep our fingers crossed for a successful Open Gardens.

Commenting on the re-opening steps, the Railway’s Michael Gough said “We are so delighted to be running again and welcoming back our visitors. Inevitably, ongoing restrictions and rules surrounding the pandemic continue to restrict the extent of our activities but these are the first few small steps to recovery and one thing that the pandemic has taught us, is to be grateful for “little wins”. Throughout the Summer we have a number of events planned including our post-lockdown steam gala in June, our Beer Festival and Vintage Fair in July, Villains and Superheroes and Animal Fun in August and our hugely-popular War Weekend in September.” Pictured below is the Loughborough Member of Parliament, Jane Hunt unveiling their new welcome sign on the A6 approach road to Loughborough accompanied by the Railway’s Managing Director Michael Gough.

Boot Camp On The Green Article by Sheryl

We all know how important exercise is to keep us healthy and well and our bodies in tip top condition. Government guidance suggests that adults aged between 19 - 64 years should exercise for at least 150 minutes a week. In recent years there has also been a lot of conversation about the benefits of exercise for good mental health.

Anstey And Glenfield Cricket Club May 2021 Report By Phil Vose, Vice Chairman

Anstey and Glenfield Cricket Club have had a very busy and encouraging start to the 2021 season. There has been some great competitive action on the pitch after the 2020 season was curtailed following the Covid restrictions. Anstey and Glenfield CC play at the Gynsill Lane sports ground with the first team playing in Division 4 West and the second team participating in Division 6 West of the Leicestershire and Rutland Cricket League. The club are taking part in the All Stars Cricket programme, which is taking place on Saturday mornings. This is an initiative from the England and Wales Cricket Board which is to encourage children aged from 5 to 8 to have their first experience of the game. Some of the club’s members have taken part in training courses to enable Anstey and Glenfield CC to host this exciting innovation. Several local youngsters are taking part for the first few weeks of the Summer and it is hoped that many of these aspiring cricketers will be taking to the field in the years to come. The first team led by captain Sunny Singh have had a good start to life in Division 4 West. They have been involved in some competitive matches with brilliant victories coming against Kegworth 2 and Barrow Town 2 and a defeat against Long Whatton. Viral Patel and Abbas Khan both made half centuries against Barrow with Ashish Patel, Nuwan Dhashana and Anil Revu all taking crucial wickets at various times to help the team to 2nd place in the table at the time of writing. The team will be hoping to push for promotion as the season progresses. The second team have had a difficult start to the 2021 season in Division 6 West with 1 victory and 2 defeats at the time of writing. This year they are being led by captain Ranjeeva Fernando. The highlight of the season to date was the 63 run victory against Maher 2 with the team suffering defeats to Barwell 2 and Ashby Hastings 2. They will be hoping for improved fortunes over the next few weeks. Both teams will be looking to consolidate their positions in their divisions and look forward to some competitive cricket ahead. The club were unable to take part in any pre-season training this year due the Covid restrictions however several of the players have been participating in training drills at the ground on weekday evenings. Some of the club members have been working down at the ground helping to prepare it for the new season. The ground is in an excellent state thanks to the efforts of our hard-working ground staff. The first Sunday friendly match of the year is due to take place on 30th May and other friendly matches will be taking place over the next few months. If you are interested in joining the club, please email our secretary Amanda Wilkes. Amanda’s email address is amandaandcharlie@btinternet.com. We are also now hosting weekly training sessions at the Gynsill Lane ground on Thursdays and Fridays from 5.30pm, so if you are interested in playing for the club, why not come down and practice. Please also visit our website at http://ansteyandglenfield.play-cricket.com and Facebook page for regular updates, results and news throughout the season.

Mind (the charity providing mental health information and support) states that there are many studies which have shown that doing physical activity can also improve mental health. For example, it can help with: • better sleep • happier moods • managing stress, anxiety or intrusive and racing thoughts • better self-esteem • reducing the risk of depression • connecting with people If you prefer to exercise outdoors or don’t like going to a gym then Anstey has the answer! Sheryl Heath, a qualified personal trainer and fitness instructor, runs outdoor exercise sessions at the Long Close park. She explains “When the gyms were closed last year I saw a need for an outdoor class to get people moving. We were all indoors and I wanted to encourage people to get out, move their body, get their heart rate up and enjoy being outside.” Sheryl explains “The Boot Camp on the Green sessions are open to everyone, they’re attended by men and women, old and young, fit and unfit, small and big and everything in between. Everyone is welcome!” Mandy, who lives on Hazlehead Road, has been going along since last summer. She enjoys the convenience of just popping up the road for a half hour work out in the fresh air then heading home to start work. She agrees that “there’s nothing like Sheryl’s boot camp for setting you up for the day”. There are three morning sessions and one evening session a week and Sheryl tailors the exercises to people’s fitness and ability. She points out “it doesn’t matter what level of fitness you are, I always give options and tell people that it’s their own workout so there’s no pressure.” Gavin heads there twice a week from Birstall. He says “Sheryl is personable, she can be tough but motivates you to push yourself. She really cares about people being active, moving and enjoying exercise”. Pam, who lives on Long Close, is grateful to Sheryl “She’s a great motivator and has helped me get through a challenging year a bit fitter rather than fatter!” Tamsin says she’s always wanted a boot camp class close to her home and now she has one on her doorstep. She says “I’m so grateful to Sheryl for making it easy to exercise, there’s a great team spirit, we all support each other and everyone is made to feel welcome. I much prefer exercising outdoors and the morning sessions are perfect for me, I’m home for breakfast and the school run!” The boot camp sessions are: Morning Tuesday 7.45 - 8.15am (£3) Thursday 7.45 - 8.15am (£3) Saturday 9.00 - 9.45am (£4) Evening Monday 6.45 - 7.30pm (£4) Wednesday 5.30 - 6.15pm (£4) Now if you take part in 4 of the 5 sessions then you will have achieved the recommended 150 minutes of exercise a week! If you take part in all of the sessions then the weekly total is 150 minutes, the government’s suggested total we should be aiming for! For more information call Sheryl on 07913 114729 or to book a session go to: https://bookwhen.com/fitnesswithsheryl For mental health support visit www.mind.org.uk

The annual meeting is where a full review of policies and Committee membership is carried out. These committees are vital to the work of the council as they allow a smaller group of people to meet and pay due diligence to the projects and finances of the council. The council operates a total of seven committees. We are still hopeful that we can move all meetings back into the Jubilee Hall although this is proving difficult. David Snartt Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate T: 01530 244804 E: cllr.david.snartt@charnwood.gov.uk

Planning Appeal, Maplewell Road Woodhouse Eaves. With all the objections sent to Charnwood Borough Council by local residents and Woodhouse Parish Council, about the planning application for up to 36 dwellings adjacent to Maplewell Road, Woodhouse Eaves. I was concerned that this current appeal, after planning permission was refused was not taking the same format as the previous appeal. You may recall the previous appeal was determined by an Informal Hearing in the Woodhouse Eaves Village Hall. This was an opportunity for local residents to understand the details put forward and be able to have their say. I understand over 100 residents attended the Hearing.

The Restart Grant Scheme supports businesses that offer in-person services, have a business rates account and have been forced to close under Covid-19 restrictions. Examples of these types of businesses include pubs, cafes and restaurants, hair salons and venues.

I have now e-mailed the Inspectorate to outline my concerns, pointing out the great deal of public interest with this current appeal, stressing that, in my view, the Informal Hearing route would again be the most appropriate way to decide this current appeal. I have received this response from the Inspectorate.

Indoor Group Exercise to Return. Residents in Charnwood have been able to get back to indoor group exercise since Monday 17th May. Charnwood Borough Council and its leisure partner Fusion Lifestyle are pleased that in line with the Government roadmap, indoor group exercise has returned to all three of the Council’s leisure centres. The restarting of indoor group exercise at South Charnwood, Soar Valley and Loughborough leisure centres means that residents in Charnwood can enjoy Zumba, yoga, pilates, body pump, indoor cycle and all the other favourite fitness fixes. Outdoor group exercise classes at Soar Valley will continue too, for those who have been enjoying exercising in the fresh air.

I refer to your e-mail of 22nd April concerning the above appeal, and I understand the desire for local residents to be aware of the submissions. However, I can assure you that with an appeal determined by written representations procedure the Inspector will hear no evidence. Rather, all representations will be in writing and will be publicly available on the appropriate websites. Having said that, as occurs with all appeals, the appointed Inspector will continue to monitor this case to make sure it is being determined in the most suitable manner, taking into account all material considerations including your comments, other representations that may be forthcoming, and the submissions of the Council. If, at some later date, the Inspector considers a Hearing would be more appropriate then the Council will be notified accordingly. I will be responding to this latest appeal. In my opinion, many of the points raised by the Inspector when dismissing the previous appeal still stand. I have also contacted Charnwood Borough Council for their support for this current appeal to be determined again by an Informal Hearing. I have now received details back from the Council, which include an extract from the information sent to the Inspectorate ‘The planning application generated a significant level of public interest and received a substantial number of comments when it was being considered by Charnwood Local Planning Authority (200+comments received) It is respectfully requested that the Inspector considered if an Informal Hearing would be more appropriate than written representations on this occasion. It may also be beneficial for the Inspector to note that the previous appeal was determined by an Informal Hearing.

Unlike some other grants where the Council has been able to make automatic payments to local companies, the Restart Grant requires all companies to fill in an application form. Restart Grants range from £2,667 to £18,000 depending on several factors. More information is available on the Council website, visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/restart_grants

All Centres will be open daily, but please refer to individual Centre’s websites for opening hours. Booking can be made up to 7 days in advance, via download of the Fusion Lifestyle App, or visit www.fusion-lifestyle.com to register and use the online booking facility. Restrictions Ease. Residents in Charnwood are being urged to support their local pubs, cafes and restaurants as Covid-19 restrictions are eased since May 17th 2021. The Government’s Roadmap means hospitality venues can once again open their doors and let customers inside for the first time since last November. Charnwood Borough Council have launched its ‘Seat Out’ campaign to encourage residents to support their local hospitality venues in a safe and considerate way and observing Covid-19 secure measures and social distancing guidance. While it is a positive step that indoor hospitality is open for business , it is worth remembering that this is still with restricted numbers and social distancing guidelines. It has been a most difficult time for local businesses within the hospitality sector. Therefore, I am pleased the Council are giving their support as the restrictions ease. Mayor of Charnwood. My year as Mayor of Charnwood finished on the 17th May. This has been a most challenging year to be Mayor, not being able to complete the normal number of engagements as in previous years due to the pandemic. That said, I have been able to see the excellent work volunteers have carried out within communities, especially helping the most vulnerable. Charnwood Borough Council, along with partners at John Storer House have handed out thousands of food parcels to the most needy across the Borough. I visited to mark the occasion when the 10,000th parcel was being delivered. Currently, I understand, they have now doubled that amount of parcels delivered. The biggest change was chairing all the Full Council meetings virtually by Zoom. They seemed to go all right, but for me, I did miss the face to face contact when all Councillors meet at the Council Chamber. It has been such a difficult year for Charities, with all the Covid-19 restrictions, making it impossible to have fund raising events for the Mayor’s two Charities, LOROS and Admiral Nurses. I am pleased I have been able to raise some much needed funds through kind donations throughout the Mayoral year. May I take this opportunity to thank everyone who contributed, for their generous support to these two great local Charities. Charnwood Businesses Restart Grants. Restart grants are now available for businesses. Around £4.5 million has been paid to nearly 600 businesses in Charnwood by the Borough Council under the Covid-19 Restart Grant Scheme, but more companies are being urged to come forward.

Hinckley And District Parkinson’s Branch Article by Robert Leake

We are hoping that it will soon be possible to announce the restarting of actual meetings in the Hinckley area. We look forward to seeing those with Parkinson’s, their carers or families for our regular monthly meetings, weekly exercise classes, Friday evening singing therapy and the relaxed, informal ‘drop-in’ afternoon teas at the garden centre at Stapleton. These we hope will all be restarting soon!

Anstey Rugby Underway Again With A Stunning 10-7 Victory At Vipers Article by Chris Apperley

Meanwhile the Hinckley Branch has started a Carers’ Group, initially meeting on Zoom on the second Sunday afternoon each month. The aim of the group is to allow fellow carers to get to know one another and share problems, situations, approaches and ideas. It is meant to be a forum for chat, advice, general support and a listening ear, “reaching out so that no one feels on their own” The lockdown ‘normality’ of Zoom! The format of the meetings will be determined by the membership but one request was to have specific speakers on particular themes. With this in mind, for our second meeting Kerry Turnbull told us all about ‘Support for Carers’ , a county-wide project funded by Leicestershire County Council. The team is made up of fully trained and sympathetic Well-Being Officers who are available to talk on the phone [0185 468543], but could also arrange home visits [when out of Covid restrictions] and have even run Carers’ Clinics at GP surgeries. Kerry stressed that carers should get registered with ‘Support for Carers’ either by self-referral or referred by professionals as a range of services may be available. It is the County Council’s legal responsibility to give advice to unpaid carers, sometimes also providing funds or even a regular budget. The services range from a telephone befriending service, a straight-forward Carers’ Guide booklet, a card and lanyard to show that you are a carer, plus a new Carers’ Passport to provide identification at surgeries and hospitals, supermarkets, and on trains or buses, to make access simpler. Help can be given to help with applications for a Blue Badge or for funding. That is useful information for all carers, whatever the disease or disability involved. All carers should complete an assessment even if they think that they do not need help at this stage. Carers always seem to be naturally reluctant to seek help. In the meantime we hope that everyone is keeping safe but following earlier advice about getting out for a walk if at all possible and keeping the radio on to avoid a silent house. If you or anyone you know might benefit from becoming a member of their local Parkinson’s Group, please encourage them to get in touch. For advice or just a chat give Janet Kavanagh a ring on 0793 2615233 or Tina Connor on 01455 699937.

After a 59 week wait Anstey RFC were back on the road again continuing their winning ways when a squad of 20 travelled to Blaby to take on a squad of about 30 at Vipers RFC’s ground. After weeks of dry weather following on from over a year of off/on/off/on fitness training and recently learning how to play within the RFUs Adapted Laws to maintain Covid safety, Saturday 8th May dawns with blustery showers and sometimes gales. With a large Vipers supporting crowd under gazebos using their outside bar our Anstey fifteen took to the field where the huge Vipers contingent had been practicing their routines. The opening 20 minutes looked ominous with Vipers attacking constantly (with the wind behind them) but failing to break through due to the excellent tackling from enthusiastic Anstey players. Eventually the constant pressure paid off and Vipers went into the lead with a converted try. Ten minutes later Anstey were turning the game with more activity at the other end of the pitch culminating with an excellent try scored by Karl Cooke. The conversion attempt was difficult given the wind against us and the lack of a kicking tee. Into the Half Time with the score Vipers 7, Anstey 5. Lots of fresh faces now on the Vipers side who were using most of their squad, but the fit Anstey team were not deterred and battled on. The game ebbed and flowed for until with 15 minutes to go Jack Smith, our fly half, who, with wind behind him and after selling a dummy or two made it over the line bringing the score to Anstey 10, Vipers 7. Conversion attempt (although very close) was missed. Despite Vipers then bringing on another raft of fresh players, Anstey’s demon tacklers kept them way from our line, giving our club a great victory. Over the next few weeks we have matches at Aylestone Athletic and Aylestone St. James with more planned into June. As per the ‘Return to Rugby Roadmap version 2 we are following the D2 guidelines where the temporary laws mean no Scrums and Mauls. Anstey RFC will be back in the Leicestershire Leagues come the new 2021/22 season all being well starting in September. In the short term due to difficulty accessing changing facilities in the adjacent Martin High School our games will probably be all be at away grounds. If you would like to get involved contact either our Club Coach and Chairman Shane Frear on 07725 642525 or Captain Graham Waring on 07764 461961 Visit www.pitchhero.com/clubs/anstey or our Facebook Group Page at www. facebook.com/groups/20694012567 for updated information. Looking forward to seeing Rugby Union played in Our Village Very Soon.

Leicestershire Residents Invited To Become Carbon Literate Article by Caroline Harmon

A local community group is inviting more Leicestershire residents to engage in a days’ worth of learning about the climate crisis and the ways in which individuals and communities can tackle it, after running a successful Carbon Literacy course during May. Transition Loughborough has been running an online Carbon Literacy course throughout May and now has spaces on another course beginning on 14th June. The courses are funded by a SHIRE Environment Grant from Leicestershire County Council and are accredited by the national Carbon Literacy Project. Anyone living, working and/or studying in Leicestershire is welcome to sign up: www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/carbon-literate-leicestershire-june-2021tickets-148762234849.

Black Bird Takes Up Residence On A Black 5 Article by Michael Stokes

The Great Central Railway’s First Hurrah Gala planned for the weekend of June the 5th and 6th has had to make some late alterations to the planned locomotive roster. A Black Bird has moved into residence on Black 5, Alderman A E Draper, 45305 and settled in for a staycation pending the hatching of it’s little ones on top of the manifold in the cab. Loco shed staff are keeping a close eye on the nest to make sure Mum is not disturbed. Details of the replacement locomotive will be announced in the next few days.

Carbon Literacy is defined as "An awareness of the carbon dioxide costs and impacts of everyday activities, and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions, on an individual, community and organisational basis.” The course covers topics such as climate change science, the ways in which the climate crisis is already impacting us, both locally and globally, and what we can do to act as individuals, communities and organisations. All attendees will make two pledges to cut their own, and their communities, carbon footprint and attendees can receive a certificate of accreditation once their pledges have been assessed by the national Carbon Literacy Project. Caroline Harmon, a member of Transition Loughborough and the lead trainer for the project, said: "We so pleased to have had our first course for Leicestershire-residents almost fully booked, with 19 attendees. Everyone is really enjoying the opportunity to learn, alongside other Leicestershire residents, what we can do in our communities to tackle climate change and to share experiences and ideas. The course has a real Leicestershire-flavour to it, but attendees are also joining more than 18,000 people around the UK and the world who have completed a Carbon Literacy course." The courses are open to anyone living, working or studying in Leicestershire. Unfortunately, they are not open to Leicester city residents or those in Rutland.
