SETTING OFF FOR THE LAST OF HIS 21 RUNS (left to right): Councillor Ozzy O’Shea (Loz’s dad), Loz O’Shea, Mike Kapur OBE (The Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire) and Dan Harrison (Chairman of Leicestershire County Council)
Pledged To Do ‘Something Massive’ For His Late Mum, So...
Loz Runs 21 Half-Marathons In 21 Days Raising £5,000 A Groby man who has finished his pledge to run 21 halfmarathons in 21 days, dedicated each run to someone who lost their life to cancer. Laurance O’Shea says he was inspired to do the challenge after losing his mum to cancer three years ago. Laurance, more commonly known as Loz, donned 17 different outfits while taking part in the challenge, from Spiderman to Thunderbirds. Loz said each costume was picked by the person or loved one with cancer. He even went so far as to plan out each route so he ended each race at the doorstep of the person he was running for.
Distribution
The 44-year-old suffers from epilepsy, which he says was heightened during the loss of his mother, Jenny O’Shea. Despite the health risks, which prevent him from driving, Loz said he wanted to do “something massive” for his mum.
Visit Our Website
Loz works at the Asda distribution centre in Lutterworth and cycles 40 miles a day to get there and back from his home in Groby. He is married to wife, Leila, and has two sons,17-year-old Loz and 15-year-old Kyle.

He said: “My family supported me every step of the way, my eldest was well made up. I just wanted to do something really big and I feel like I’ve achieved that. I’ve done fundraising in the past, but after I lost my mum, my epilepsy got worse and my seizures started playing up, so I had to stop for a while. Her illness was really short, they found lumps on her chest and brain but before they could operate they found her on the floor with a bleed on the brain. I’ve always wanted to do something that would make her proud and I really hope I have. I’ve lost my grandma and grandad and an aunty because of cancer too, and I just had the realisation that people from all walks of life have lost a handful of people to the disease - so I wanted to do my bit to help.”

Loz’s challenge began on March 25, ending on April 14, raising just over £5,000 for Cancer Research UK.

He said: “We did a JustGiving page and I’ve had cash donations, clearing just over £5,000. I used three weeks holiday from work and ended up running an extra 53 miles than I intended to - meaning I did 315 in total. If I couldn’t run towards someone I had dedicated the run to - for example someone in Nuneaton - I would do miles around Leicestershire. I met so many people along the way and I can’t tell you how good it felt to see a smile on their face.” His outfits ranged from Batman and Robin to Superman, Wolverine, Captain America, 21 half marathons in 21 days - from page 1 Spiderman, Mr Incredible, Mr T from the A-Team, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Darth Maul, Darth Vader, Where’s Wally, Deadpool, Garfield, a Storm Trooper, Thunderbird and Robocop. The runner’s favourite journey was day 17, when he ran 18.4 miles in a Deadpool costume. He said: “I didn’t want to stop. The public were loving it and kept horning their cars. I did it for a random woman who had taken a picture of me in my outfit on Day 5. We got to talking and she told me she had also lost her son to cancer. She told me his name was Shay - which is like my surname. When she added me on Facebook I knew I had to dedicate one of my runs for him. Another good day was the 19th run, when I dressed as a storm trooper. I was in Hinckley when this man filmed me. He saw me again in New Parks and showed me a video he put together for his son, of me in my outfit. Stuff like that kept me going.” On the last day, Loz put on his Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle outfit and got family members to dress up, too. He said: “All four turtles crossed the finishing line that day. It was for my mum and her twin sister, who both lost their lives to cancer. It meant a lot to my grandma who lost her husband, her mum and both her daughters to the disease. The Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire and the chairman of Leicestershire County Council set me on my way and were both there to see me finish at the end. It was quite a thing to have them do that for me and help me raise awareness for cancer.”

Protecting Your Family Inheritance Article by Klara Dixon
Our frontline staff follow Government guidelines for visiting you in your home and they are fully vaccinated. LevLaw Ltd remains here for you. Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually.
Last year saw the return of the Thurcaston and Cropston Open Gardens after a year off due to Covid. It was a very successful weekend with a record number of visitors and a record amount raised for the Air Ambulance – over £3600. Our chosen charity continues to be Leicestershire Air Ambulance, and we hope to help them raise some much-needed funds. Like many charities, they have suffered over the last year. We put a number of measures in place to keep visitors and garden owners safe from Covid last year which worked well. Covid is still with us, so we may need to do so again this year. Gardens will be open from 2pm – 6pm on both days. Tickets are £5 each (accompanied children and wheelchair users free) and will be valid for both days. They can be purchased on the day from any of the signposted Open Gardens. Look for the fuchsia-
coloured balloons! Tea and cake will be available at various locations, and a number of gardens will be selling plants. We have a number of very varied gardens for you to visit across the two villages: some large, some small, some immaculate, some very much less so! Some are new gardens, and some have taken part before. But all for you to enjoy. It is often said how welcoming our Gardeners are and they would love you to come and see all their hard work. Why not put the date in your diary now, then come along with your family and friends to support this great community event, and help us raise money for a very worthwhile cause. For more information about this event please have a look at our web site www.tcog.org.uk or contact Linda on 0116 2363872 or email linda@tcog.org.uk
But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased’s share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children’s inheritance is protected. This last point can be particular interest to couples who have come together and have children with different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensuring that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property, they can still sell the property and the proceeds to be used to purchase a new property, the terms of the Trust remain over the new property.
We look forward to seeing you!

Article by Sheila Timms
Thurcaston & Cropston Local History Society Article by Peter Smith
At our April meeting, we welcomed back Bob Trubshaw to discuss the intriguing subject of how Anglo-Saxons found their way. Bob is a writer and publisher on various subjects that are ancient, mystical or mysterious, as well as the instigator of Project Gargoyle to document the medieval church carvings of Leicestershire and Rutland. Anglo-Saxon settlers began to arrive from mainland Europe not long after Roman rule here had ended. The kingdoms that they founded eventually united to create England, and their culture and the Old English language remained dominant until the time of the Norman Conquest. Anglo-Saxon people needed to travel for reasons including trade, pilgrimage and war but they did not have maps, so how did they find their way? One possible answer comes from studies of English place-names, the majority of which are Anglo-Saxon in origin. This includes names that end in -ham (related to “home”) or -ton (related to “town”). Both those words meant a settlement, with a tendency for -ham¬ places to be more pastoral and -ton places to be more arable. Many place-names, including Cropston and Thurcaston, referred to individuals but others are descriptive of landscape features. Research by Margaret Gelling and others has demonstrated that those descriptions can be extremely specific. For example, there were at least 20 different words for “hill”, depending on whether the hill was round (-don), steep-sided (cliff or edge), a ridge dipping at the end (over), “heel-shaped” with a high and a low summit (ho- or hough-), wooded (hurst) or artificial (barrow or -low). There were similar ranges of words for types of valley, woods, water features, etc. Other names referred to the former Roman occupation so anywhere called Stretton will be near a Roman road (street), while places with names ending -chester, -cester or -xeter will be on the site of a Roman town. In the opinion of Bob and others, these descriptions were specific enough for travellers to have found a route from one place to the next. He has identified that you could still travel from Great Glen, south of Leicester, to Thistleton on the Lincolnshire border, passing only through villages that have descriptive Old English names. Although we have no evidence of AngloSaxon journeys being planned in this way, there are surviving documents that define the boundaries of estates by reference to a series of landscape features. The main difficulty for travellers would have been to remember the sequence of places. It is likely that the Anglo-Saxons used stories or songs to link them together in a memorable way, similar to the “song lines” of Aboriginal Australia or the traditional stories of Traveller communities. There is more detail about these ideas in a written version of Bob’s talk, which is online at www.hoap.co.uk/hasftw.pdf In the summer months we leave the Memorial Hall to visit local places of historic interest. On Tuesday, 21st June, the Blue Badge guide Steve Bruce will take us on a tour of Leicester streets, called “Who put the Cank in Cank Street?” If you would like to join us, please make contact through our website: www.thurcastoncropstonhistory.org.uk

We welcome people who are socially isolated and would like some company. There is no specific age limit, but usually people aged 70 plus attend.
Traditionally this month also sees our own annual craft, cookery and flower arranging contests. In honour of Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee, this year they were: a crown of wearable size in any medium, a red, white and blue flower arrangement, and four jam tarts. As can be seen from the accompanying photograph, these made an impressive, colourful display. The other picture shows contestants with their entries. Sue Crook will receive the craft contest for her magnificent replica of the Imperial State Crown, while Elizabeth Robinson won those for cookery and flower arranging. Save the date: on September 14th at 7.30pm, Anstey WI will host an SOS Fashion Show. This is an opportunity to buy branded clothing over makes at reduced prices, as well as having fun. Tickets will be on sale at £5. Further details will follow.

Monday Club Cropston And Thurcaston Article by Maja Tompkins
As the year progresses, it’s good that the Monday Club is able to continue to meet. Earlier in the year, we only tentatively began to plan a programme because we were still uncertain about any further Covid 19 restrictions being re-imposed. Partly for that reason, we decided not to arrange an annual coach outing as we have usually done. As an alternative, we made a booking to go out for lunch and, on Monday 9th May, a group of Club members and their guests met at the Ulverscroft Grange Tea Rooms. We were welcomed into the conservatory where our pre-ordered menu choices and drinks were served to us. All in all, it was a pleasant social occasion and the food was very tasty, plus there was the added bonus of a Craft Fair being held in the vicinity, with the opportunity to browse the stalls after our lunch. On 13th June we return to our regular venue in Cropston, when our speaker, Sue Williams, will talk about the work of the charity, ADAPT Prembabies Limited, which supports parents and families who have premature or sick babies.

Friday Film Presentations In Thurcaston Article by Richard & Diane We are bringing forward the screening of “Belfast” from September to June due to unavailability of “Colour Room” on DVD or Blue-Ray for a Public Screening Licence. “Belfast” will be shown on June 10th and lasts 98 minutes. Our June film won a BAFTA for Best British Film and was also nominated for many Oscars. Written and directed by Sir Kenneth Branagh, about his own childhood, the story tells The 1960’s Troubles, as seen through the eyes of nine year old Buddy. Starring Jude Hill and Judy Dench and mostly in black and white, this film is joyous and beautiful. There will be a break from films during the summer. "Downton Abbey - A New Era" will be shown on September 9th if the film has been released on DVD or Blue Ray. “Death on the Nile- 2022 version” will be shown on September 9th or Oct 14th. We will be keeping the hall well ventilated and there will be room for us to space out. Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council will be showing these films at Thurcaston Memorial Hall, starting at 7.30pm. Film tickets will cost the usual £5, which includes a lucky prize draw and refreshments during the interval. You can pay for tickets at the door or pay in advance from Richard 0116 2363 066 or Diana 0116 2362 619

Playing with a strict referee it was not a surprise that the first score would be from a penalty kick. Athletic opened the scoring 3-0 After a fierce battle Anstey's Full back, Tom, finally broke through for the first try of the match 3-5 . No conversion. Next it was the turn of Vice Captain, Jack Smith with try number two 3-10. Close on half time Athletic closed the gap with another penalty. Half time score 6-10 A stalemate ensued for the bast part of the second half, until with 10 minutes to go Matt Belcher broke through with try number three. 6-15 Unfortunately two Anstey players got yellow carded and sin binned for the final part of the match leaving it 13 Anstey players v 15 for Athletic. The second half of ’40 minutes’ came and went and well into the long added time Athletic final got their one and only try. Not converted.
Not long after that, the final whistle - a well deserved 15-11 win. for Anstey RFC. Having taken place on what was to be our President’d Day we have had to postpone that event until later in the year. After the AGM the New Committee will organise a new date, also a dinner and presentation evening. Anstey RFC’s 42nd AGM is on Sunday 19th June at 11am, Coach & Horses. It would be great to see a good turn out. All members, Life Members included, are invited The full season Updated fixture list is on our website at www.pitchero.com/clubs/anstey/ teams/41334/fixtures-results If you would like to get involved and start playing rugby, contact either our Chairman Shane Frear on 07725 642525 or Captain Graham Waring on 07764 461961 Visit www.pitchhero.com/clubs/ anstey or our Facebook Group Page at www.facebook.com/ groups/20694012567 for updated information.

e have recently opened our new office in Ratby to remain accessible to the surrounding areas, with the aim of helping more local clients achieve their financial goals.
Tudor Franklin was established by Richard Meats and Bharat Chudasama in 2017, with a vision for a professional financial planning and advice service that can provide clear value to our clients at any stage in their financial life. With over 30 years joint experience advising clients on such matters as investments, pensions, inheritance tax planning and protection, we pride ourselves on being professional and delivering advice in a clear and understandable way. We have particular focus and experience in advising clients with their potential inheritance tax (IHT) concerns and are affiliate members of STEP (The Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners). STEP is a global professional body, comprising lawyers, accountants, trustees and other practitioners that help families plan for their futures.
By applying our knowledge and experience in this area we are able to advise on how to structure your existing savings, investments and pensions with IHT in mind. In an industry where many financial advisers work with a restricted number of providers, we believe that there is no one size fits all approach. As we are independent financial advisers with no ties to any product provider, we can find the most appropriate solution for you and your circumstances. Once we take the time to understand you and your requirements, we are proud to offer a financial planning and wealth management service that is ethical, tailored to you and puts your needs first at all times. We would love the opportunity to see what we can do to help, so please get in touch for further information.

Proposed Development Markfield Lane. I was pleased to see so many residents attending the last Newtown Linford Parish Council meeting to explain their concerns and opposition to the proposed development for up to 150 dwellings on land behind the houses on Markfield Lane and Leicester Road. Pegasus Group has undertaken a public consultation on behalf of Davidsons Developments to progress this proposal. As the local Borough Councillor, I have responded to this consultation, outlining my initial concerns to this proposal. I thought you may be interested in my response which is as follows: The village of Newtown Linford is classed in the ‘Other Settlements’ category within the current Charnwood Local Plan hierarchy which states: ‘These villages may be suitable for some small scale infill development to meet local needs. To be considered small scale, a development should be appropriate in size for the village they are in and the character of the site’s location and surroundings. Any development that increases the need to travel by car will not be considered to be acceptable small-scale development’. In my view, this proposal to build 150 dwellings on this site fails this test. The site was submitted to Charnwood Borough Council’s Strategic Housing and Employment Availability Assessment (SHELAA). I believe there is agreement that this site is not proposed for allocation in the submission for examination of the Charnwood Draft Local Plan. I refer to the submission document SD/6 Appendix H (May 2021) of the Sustainability Appraisal Report, this report gives details about the site which include: Biodiversity and nature conservation: the site contains grassland and a brook (Fishpond brook), development is likely to result in isolating adjacent woodland/ grassland and the loss of habitat. The scale of the site could potentially affect the character of the village. Access to a secondary school, more than 3200 metres. Access to convenience store, over 1200 metres distance to a food shop/supermarket. In my opinion, with the information provided by both the Charnwood Local Plan 2011 to 2028 and the omission of the site from the allocations for submission for examination to the new Charnwood Draft Local Plan, this proposal would cause considerable harm with the loss of biodiversity and habitat. It is also clear from the distances provided in Appendix H of the Sustainability Appraisal Report this site is not sustainable and the car would be the main mode of transport to attend school and buy the smallest items from a food shop/supermarket. I believe the harm to develop this site would significantly outweigh the benefits when considered against the detail outlined above. I am grateful to the residents who have sent me information on previous activity on this site, it will be very helpful if and when a planning application comes forward. I will keep you updated on this proposed development. Search for Best Hanging Basket. A competition has been launched to find the best hanging basket in Charnwood in celebration of Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Charnwood Borough Council’s open spaces partner idverde and Loughborough in Bloom are inviting residents across the Borough to put on their gardening gloves and plant-up a hanging basket to mark the Jubilee. The prizes up for grabs are: first prize, an annual family membership for The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). Second and third prize, £50 National Garden Gift Voucher. The closing date for entries is Sunday July 31st 2022. The judging panel will choose the best 10 hanging baskets which will be shortlisted to the final three during the first two weeks of August, winners will be announced in September. To enter all you need to do is: e-mail two photos of your hanging basket to charnwood@idverde.co.uk, include you name, contact number and address in the body of the e-mail, mark your e-mail subject ‘Hanging Basket Competition’. People can also send entries by post to: idverde Hanging Basket Competition, Derby Road Playing Fields, Cotton Way, Loughborough, LE11 5JF. Council Tax Rebate. The first council tax energy rebate payments for people who paid their

council tax by Direct Debit on 3rd April should have been paid into their bank accounts. This is the £150 non-repayable rebate for households in England in council tax bands A to D. To support households who are in need but are not eligible for council tax energy rebate, Charnwood Borough Council has been allocated a discretionary fund of £231,300. For non-Direct Debit payers who meet the eligibility criteria, your household will be issued with a single use Post Office voucher. Where you have selected your bills by e-mail, the voucher will be e-mailed to you, otherwise the voucher will be sent out by post. The Council anticipate the vouchers will be issued from 18th May onwards. The voucher can be taken to any post office and redeemed for the £150 cash payment. The Post Office vouchers expire after three months. For further information please visit the Council’s website. Solar Together. A scheme has been launched in Charnwood in partnership with other Borough and District Councils in Leicestershire. Save on energy bills and help cut carbon emissions by investing in solar panels through an exciting new group-buying energy scheme. Solar Together Leicestershire helps people looking to make an investment in solar panels on their house and battery storage system for a reduced rate. Signing up is free for residents and is now open. For more information and to sign up, visit www.charnwood. gov.uk/solar-together Residents who register will be entered into an auction, where Solar PV suppliers compete by offering the lowest rate for solar panel installation. The more people registered, the lower the price could be. Working with iChoosr, Solar Together then provides those signed up with a free, no obligation offer from the successful energy supplier. A personal recommendation will be e-mailed out with information on the winning solar panel installer, the proposed system, costs and savings ready for residents to make their choice. Charnwood Borough Council is currently working towards the authority being carbon neutral by 2030. Installing solar panels on homes can reduce carbon emissions by generating clean electricity and save homeowners money on energy costs. Registration closes on Tuesday 14th June with the selection revealed from Monday 4th July onwards. The Big Lunch. Hopefully you will receive this information before Sunday 5th June. If you are not attending an event in your village, residents are invited to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in Loughborough’s Queens Park on Sunday 5th June from 12 midday to 4.00pm. Charnwood Borough Council will host ‘The Big Lunch’ picnic, which is an afternoon of fun filled attractions, including live music, entertainment and children’s activities. The Charnwood Concert Band will be performing in the bandstand from 3pm. Residents are invited to bring their own picnic, chair and blanket and enjoy a relaxing afternoon in the beautiful Queen’s Park. Laying up of The Guidon. On the 14th May, The Leicestershire and Derbyshire (Prince Albert’s Own) Yeomanry kindly invited me to the laying up of the Guidon service at All Saints’ Church, Newtown Linford, followed by a wreath laying service at the War Memorial in Bradgate Park. All Saints’ has an ongoing strong link with the Yeomanry with the annual Frezenberg Memorial service taking place during the month of May. The Leicestershire Yeomanry made a significant contribution at the Battle of Frezenberg during the 1st World War. The Leicestershire and Derbyshire Yeomanries were formed in 1794 in response to a threat of invasion by the French. The two regiments served in South Africa during the second Boer War. Following the years of conflict, including the 1st and 2nd World Wars, the regiments reformed back to their peacetime roles before amalgamating in 1957 to become “The Leicestershire and Derbyshire (Prince Albert’s Own) Yeomanry. Anstey Chess Club
Article by Ben Vaughan Venue: Anstey Methodist Church, Cropston Road When: Thursday evenings from 7pm Web: www.ansteychessclub.co.uk League Chess Results 28/4/22 - Anstey 1 3-1 Syston 2 A fantastic win for the first team as they conquered the league winners at home. Wins for John Robinson against a 2000+ FIDE rated player, Mick and Matt and a loss for Julian this time. 5/5/22 Anstey 2 3-1 Melton Mowbray 3 A good win at home for the second team. Wins for Matt, young Leo (great run of form for Leo) and captain Oskar with just the one loss for Webmaster Boris. Having hired the venue for the duration of the Summer months, we have subsequently entered the Summer Cup competitions and our Wylie Cup team lost on its debut by a margin of 5-3. An encouraging start for the understrength side even though it still goes down as a loss. We recorded impressive draws for Matt on board 1, a draw and a loss for Mick on board 2, 2 losses for me on board 3 and a win and a draw for Valdas on his competitive debut for the club.
Anstey Nomads
Article by Matt Johnson First Team The Nomads came close this year in the League. Finishing 3rd behind Gresley Rovers and the champions, Long Eaton Town. On the whole, it was a successful season for the first team, pushing the top two until the end of the season, but it will also be one which leaves the team thinking what could have been. Slip ups at Heanor spring to mind and Deeping Rangers, easing the pressure that was on Gresley at the time. Despite not getting promotion, the Nomads seen some success in their run in the FA Vase, despite originally being dumped from the competition. The away trip to Wroxham was a highlight, scoring 5 goals in their own back yard, with a man deficit for the majority of the second half. Although, we didn’t get past Wythenshawe in the next round, we welcomed around 800 of you fans down here, supporting from the village! Towards the end of the season, the squad looked strong. Personel such as Leon Fray and Lewis Gibbens, who has committed his future to the club, at the back provided a strong base for us to work from. In the last 9 games, 6 clean sheets were recorded showing the influences of the 2 additions. But most importantly, we had a great showing from fans. Averaging an attendance of 277 down at the Callingtons was key to pushing the lads! We hope to see you all next year pushing on for promotion another cup run (or two)! Season Award Winners: Supporter’s Player: Corey Armeni Players’ Player: Jordan Annable Manager’s Player: Henry Bestwick Goal of the Season: Corey Armeni vs Wroxham Top Goalscorer: Corey Armeni – 25 goals
Equipment On Thursday 12th May, Councillors Deborah Taylor and Paul Baines from Charnwood Borough Council have funded some new equipment for us and we were delighted to host them and have them present the equipment to us. Councillor Taylor played a game against Marcus - one of our Junior members - and played very well. Councillor Baines took a more observational seat and enjoyed watching the game. After a steady game, Marcus eventually found a way to bring Cllr Taylor's King to the edge of the board and delivered a very nice checkmate on her King. It was a lovely evening and hopefully they call in and see us again soon with our fresh new equipment. Venue We are also very grateful to or members and the below organisations in helping us to fund the chess this year: The Anstey Town Charity - an organisation which helps local clubs/ organisations in Anstey with funding for £200. Anstey Parish Council - they have donated £250 to the club, received with humble thanks from all at the club. We wish to place on record our thanks as a club for these donations to help us with keeping the club running.
Womens Team Formally of AFC Leicester, the Anstey Nomads Womens side find themselves in the final next week! By the time you’ve read this we’d know if they are crowned champions or not! The squad also performed great as they came runners up in their division, only behind Derby Counties Academy, as well as achieving a run in the League plate, making it to the semi-final! Manager Louie Carr, had to say this, ‘They are a great bunch of players who work really hard for each other and are starting to play some attractive football!’ He went on to talk about his ambitions, claiming that as a team they are looking to be playing within the national league within the next 2/3 years! Good luck to the Womens side and hope you bring the County Cup home. Events We’d like to thank everyone who came out to the Party on the Pitch event, there was a lot of you there! We hope you enjoyed the Jamlocks and supporting acts as much as we did. As for the young ones, we are hosting two tournaments for girls and boys over the weekend of the 21st and 22nd. A fun day for all and hoping for good spirits and good weather.
Junior Coaching/Lessons The junior coaching sessions will now be taking a Summer break due to me playing cricket during the Summer months. I am extremely grateful to Kellie and the staff at Beanies Soft Play for hosting us and accommodating us over the past few months. We will be back in September - keep an eye on this article for updates!
We are looking to host more events for our community, we have hosted live performances in our clubhouse, live football screening. But we’re not done their, keep an eye out for any events upcoming in the summer and next season!

To find out more and to register for the scheme, please visit: www. charnwood.gov.uk/pages/solartogether Member Grants We mentioned last month in our report about the grants available from Charnwood Borough Council, including our member grants for Anstey. Both Paul and Deborah were delighted to award £250 each to the Anstey Chess Club, to pay for some much-needed new equipment. Once the new equipment had arrived, we were invited by the President of the club, Ben Vaughan, to the club to see the equipment and have a game of chess. Deborah agreed and enjoyed a 40-minute game with one of the club’s youngest players, Marcus (aged 9). Deborah was checkmated by Marcus with some great play! The Chess club are always after new members, so no matter what your ability level is or what age you are, please contact Ben for a chat on via email or telephone or visit the website. Details are here: Tel: 07469 207548 Email: ansteychess@hotmail.com Website: www.ansteychessclub.co.uk Deborah has also given £300 to Anstey Local History Society to support the group with their photographic exhibition taking place on Saturday 11th June and Sunday 12th June 2022, 10am to 4pm at The Church Rooms, Church Lane, Anstey. The exhibition will look at Anstey from 1952 at the beginning of the Queen’s reign. There will be over 200 photos from the Anstey Millennium Collection on display so please do support the group and pop in over the weekend of the 11th and 12th. There are refreshments. The admission is £1 and 50% of this will go to the Ukrainian fund. In England, the Queen’s Baton Relay will provide the opportunity for communities to experience the excitement for Birmingham 2022, as the 11 days of sport nears ever closer.
The webpage explains more about the types of ASB that are the most common and you can click on each type of ASB and find out more about what action you can take and who to contact. There is information about noise, dogs, bonfires, graffiti, and neighbour disputes. The webpage can be found here: www.charnwood.gov.uk/pages/asb_guide
The Queen’s Baton Relay is set to travel the length and breadth of England for a total of 29 days, before the Opening Ceremony for Birmingham 2022 on 28th July 2022. Starting on Thursday 2nd June, the Baton will spend four days in London, coinciding with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Weekend. The Baton will then resume the international journey and return to England on Monday 4th July to commence a 25-day tour of the regions.

The Chairman's Reception at Syston Town Council. The BAPS Inspired Living celebrations, to celebrate the birth of Hindu guru Pramukh Swami Maharaj, whose wise mantra is 'in others' happiness, lies our own'. The Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. It rained heavily but we enjoyed the day, the pomp, the ceremony, and the fancy sandwiches and afternoon tea, all the same. Afternoon musical tea at the Loughborough Lions. Great nostalgic tunes, shame about the Mayor's dancing ability! All Saints Church 'Concert for Ukraine' where Rev. Wendy Dalrymple and her able team organised around 100 performers for our musical delight. Deborah Taylor
County Councillor for Bradgate Division T: 0116 2350126 E: deborah.taylor@leics.gov.uk As this edition lands on your doormat, we will be looking forward to celebrating Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and enjoying an extended Bank Holiday. Whatever you are doing, whether you are attending events/street parties, spending time with friends and family, or just enjoying a few quiet days watching the events on television, I hope you all have a great time and spend a moment in awe of this momentous occasion. God Save The Queen I had two lovely evenings at the National Space Centre for our ‘Celebrations of Achievements’ awards for Leicestershire children in care. These events allow us to celebrate our amazing children and treat them to a great evening out. There was one evening for our younger children and one for our older children. Beacon Voices, our children in care choir, sang for us on both evenings and all the children had an opportunity to look around the space centre and watch the moon landing show in the Planetarium. I was also fortunate to see the show in the Planetarium and it is well worth a visit. I did have to smile when I was asked if I was an astronaut! Ukraine Leicestershire residents are beginning to welcome Ukrainian refugees into the area, and I was delighted to meet a young lady who had just arrived in Woodhouse Eaves at the recent Annual Parish Council meeting I attended. Just over 300 refugees have arrived in the county so far, with many more visas approved and sponsors registered. There is a wealth of information for sponsors and for anyone supporting refugees in other ways on our dedicated web page on the county council’s website: www.leicestershire.gov.uk/ support-for-ukraine The main issues that I am being contacted about are the emergency £200 payment to each refugee on arrival and school places. Sponsors need to email: HomesforUkraine@leics.gov.uk when their refugees arrive, and the payment card will be sent out that day. We do not receive notification when refugees arrive, so it is important that the sponsors let us know. Regarding school places, the normal councils school admissions process is followed, but Ukrainian children are guaranteed a school place. There is information on the website but here is the extract about school places: School Places for Ukrainian Refugees Welcome to all children and families from Ukraine who have decided to settle here in Leicestershire. If your children are of Primary School age 4 - 10 years old, or of Secondary School age 11 - 16 years old, the best way to apply for a school place is through our online school application process below. Please declare that you are making an application for or on behalf of a Ukrainian refugee. If you would like to speak to us about school places, please call 0116 305 6684. Please note: We are experiencing a very high volume of applications for school places, and we appreciate your patience and understanding whilst we process these. As it can take up to 15 school days to reach and communicate each decision, we politely request waiting for this length of time before contacting the service to follow up on an application. Roads Some of the roads across Leicestershire will be treated this summer to help reduce the chance of potholes developing. Leicestershire County Council will carry out this preventative maintenance with the equivalent of 75 football pitches worth of roads over the coming months. These improvements will help maintain the condition of the roads. The works, known as surface dressing, provide the roads with an additional protective layer by sealing the surface with bitumen and stone chippings. The new layer prevents water and air penetrating the tarmac underneath, preventing potholes, while the stone chippings increase the texture of the road surface. The process also adds anti-skid properties to the road, increasing road safety.
With more than 2,575 miles of road to maintain across the county, this effort to tackle problems on the roads before they form, can reduce reactive maintenance and save our council money. Roads in my Division that are programmed in for this surface dressing are in Anstey and Woodhouse which are planned to be completed during June. Shire Grants A pot of £600,000 is available for schemes and projects that help people who are struggling. Small grants of up to £3,000 or larger sums of up to £10,000 are available to help with costs including staffing, buying equipment and room hire for community projects which help disadvantaged and vulnerable people in Leicestershire. Leicestershire County Council has launched its SHIRE Community Grants Scheme again this year to support projects run by community groups, charities, not-for-profit enterprises and town and parish councils. The SHIRE Community Grants programme aims to fund projects that help elderly and frail people, those with disabilities, special educational needs or mental health conditions as well as carers and those experiencing financial hardship, social isolation and poor access to services. Applications for the current round of grants are being accepted until June 8th, 2022, but further grants will be available in September and November 2022. Groups wishing to apply must be based in Leicestershire. More information can be found on the Leicestershire Communities website: www. leicestershirecommunities.org.uk/grants/shire-community-grant.html New Technology The homes of elderly and vulnerable adults in Leicestershire are being fitted with equipment such as fall detectors to help keep them safe 24 hours a day. Leicestershire County Council has launched a new technology service with the potential to boost people’s independence, improve their quality of life and reduce the amount of support they need. Care Technology (CT), sometimes referred to as telecare, involves monitoring and alert equipment to help people to remain independent in their home and in the community. This equipment will provide residents, their carers, family and friends with the reassurance that help is available round-theclock, seven days a week. It allows people to be monitored by trained staff in case they should fall ill or have an accident so that help can be quickly summoned whilst reducing the pressure on 999 services. Care Technology covers a wide range of equipment, such as alarm systems, falls detectors and GPS location trackers. User-friendly technology will be tailored for each person’s circumstances, helping them to live safe and independent lives. The Care Technology Service is available at no charge for adults who meet the eligibility criteria. More information is available on the council's website: www.leicestershire. gov.uk/adult-social-care-and-health/living-independently-at-home/caretechnology A Net Zero County by 2045 A major consultation has been launched by Leicestershire County Council on proposals to make the county cleaner, greener and healthier. Residents, businesses, councils, universities and others are being urged to help shape ambitious plans to make Leicestershire a net zero carbon county by 2045 by getting involved in the consultation. Leicestershire County Council is inviting people to comment on how changing the way they travel, how they run and maintain their homes, and how what they buy from day-to-day can help to protect the environment. The consultation focuses on a net zero action plan which sets out key goals including: • reducing carbon emissions generated by transport; • reducing energy use in buildings – plus improving energy efficiency and adding new renewable energy generation; • supporting businesses to go green and grow the low carbon economy;

News From St Mary’s Church Rooms, Anstey Article by Anne Dutton
Church Rooms in the conservation area of Church Lane, Anstey was originally be built as a school for all. It is now 188 years old and is one of the oldest community buildings in Anstey. The building is in the ownership of the church and for over ninety years has been available for use by the church, village organisations and individuals. Under the present floor there are the marks of the hobnailed boots of the Home Guard who used it as drill hall when it was requisitioned during The Second World War. The building has been inspected by a surveyor and in spite of being in need of renovation it turned out that the general quality of the building is better than had been supposed. After two open meetings to discuss the future of Church Rooms we have been encouraged by the enthusiasm and offers of advice, help and support from people from the village community who attended. We are very grateful to the Anstey Town Charity for a very generous grant to help us with our initial investigations concerning the feasibility of renovating these community rooms. We have now identified our top priorities and are beginning to source quotes for this work. We are also planning more fundraising and grant applications. Anstey Local History Society are holding a Photographic Exhibition of ANSTEY AT THE BEGINNING OF QUEEN ELIZABETH 11’S REIGN 1950 to 1960 Church Rooms LE7 7AF on Saturday and Sunday 11th and 12th June 10am- 4pm We hope you will come along to this exhibition, enjoy refreshments, and maybe see inside our historical building for the first time. At the present time we are unable to let out the rooms on a regular basis but if you would like to use them for a single event (no kitchen facilities at the present time) please get in touch. communications@ansteyparishchurch.org.uk If you would like to be involved in this Church Rooms project in any way, please email us at the above address.
Peri-menopause And You Article by Garry Trickett
Menopause officially marks the end of a woman’s reproductive years. This life stage is well known, but there are different stages within menopause, such as peri-menopause, that are less well known, yet not without symptoms. Medically speaking, peri-menopause starts when the first menopausal symptoms are noticed, typically mid-40s, and ends a year after the last menstrual bleed, or the point in time when menopause has been reached. Biologically speaking, peri-menopause marks a decline in the production of hormones that drive the menstrual cycle, specifically oestrogen and progesterone. Although part of the same overall life transition, menopause and perimenopause can have different symptoms. During peri-menopause, you may start to experience symptoms of menopause, such as hot flushes and night sweats, but peri-menopause symptoms can vary greatly, and in some women, are similar to symptoms of PMS. A few more frequently encountered symptoms during peri-menopause include: irregular, painful periods or periods that are heavier than usual, breast pain, hair loss, anxiety and irritability, dryness, temperature irregularity, trouble sleeping and insomnia (and consequently tiredness), low mood and libido, and muscle and joint aches and pains. A key point to appreciate is that your adrenal glands (which produce adrenalin when you are stressed) are able to make ‘back-up’ hormones to buffer the fall of oestrogen and progesterone during the menopause. They are less able to do this if you are highly stressed and therefore demanding adrenalin production. Factor in some R&R as a matter of priority to keep the transition from peri-menopause to menopause a happy time. There are also a number of natural treatments and herbal remedies that can help to smooth this transition for you.
Article by John Morfey
A.Vogel’s Menopause Support tackles all stages of menopause, and contains soy isoflavones which naturally mimic the effect of oestrogen in the body. Isoflavones, oestrogen-like plant hormones or phytoestrogens, can provide an additional hormone boost when oestrogen levels are low.

Sage helps to correct sweat regulation and diminish hot flushes. Fresh sage tincture diluted in a little water three times daily can really help. Try Menosan Sage Drops or for extra oomph, Menoforce Sage Tablets.

And for trouble sleeping, there’s Valerian. For emotional support during any time of challenge, nothing beats exercise. It’s a great way of producing happy chemicals (endorphins), metabolising carbs, toning muscle (which then burns more calories), and working off aggressive feelings. Any type of exercise that takes your fancy is fine, so long as it gets you moving or toning. For further information, visit Gary and his team at The Health Store, West Bridgford or call 0115 9814080.

Thurcaston And Cropston Gardening Club Article by Richard
Hostas In May, the Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club was treated to a talk by Robert Barlow on Hostas. Robert runs North Staffordshire Hostas. He has no horticultural training, and his nursery started as a hobby. In 2010 Robert had 15 varieties of hostas, now he has 500 varieties with 4000 plants in stock. Hostas originate in eastern Asia. They first came to the attention of the west through trading with Asia. The development of hostas was slow at first, but ‘took off’ in America in the 1870s. it wasn’t until early in the 19th century that they appeared in the UK. There are now over 18,000 varieties registered! Hostas are herbaceous perennials, and they all hibernate during the winter months. But the differences between varieties can be vast. They range from miniatures which are no higher than 6 inches, to giants that can be up to 5 feet. There are also differences in their form – some are as wide as they are high, while some are more upright. Some are more clump forming than others. They also have a larger colour range than any other single plant group. Hostas like fertile soils, moisture retentive but free draining. They also need some shade and shelter from wind. Some hostas are very reliable, but if you want a ‘show’ plant you need to know more about the conditions it needs. Robert also explained about feeding, watering, propagation, and pests. He made the point that no hostas are resistant to slugs, but some are more resilient!! The talk was very comprehensive. It attracted a large audience – which demonstrate the popularity of hostas. In addition, Robert bought lots of plants for sale. The Gardening Club meets in the Thurcaston and Cropston Memorial Hall
Get Your Lawn Ready For Summer With warmer, longer days on the horizon, the beautiful bright colours of your garden are best enjoyed alongside a lush, green lawn. As the centrepiece of your garden, GreenThumb Lawn Treatment Service will ensure your lawn reaches its full potential as a weed-free, healthy, and well-loved lawn. Our ‘Summer Ready’ Treatment is applied between April and June and features a fully coated fertiliser designed to give your lawn a timed release of nutrition over several months, feeding your grass and stimulating growth. This sophisticated treatment also includes a weed control to help eradicate those which are unwelcome on your lawn, keeping your lawn looking its best ready for summer. An added benefit of our ‘Summer Ready’ Treatment is that you’ll also receive an application of our fantastic water conserver, Oasis. Now is the perfect time
for an Oasis Treatment as it helps your soil to make the best use of any available moisture, meaning you’ll need to water up to 80% less. Our popular Oasis Treatment now features an innovative, highly concentrated seaweed extract which has proven to have an almost immediate visual effect on the colour of your lawn. At this time of year, we also recommend implementing a regular mowing regime to help your lawn be the best it can be. Dry, sunny days are the best conditions for mowing, however it’s important that your mower blades are kept sharp or replaced when needed to avoid causing damage to the grass plant. It is also important, especially during the summer months, that your grass isn’t cut too short as this will weaken it, attracting unwanted weeds. When dry, we advise raising the height of your cut from 1” up to 2” and give it a good drink the day after mowing. Let’s create the lawn we both love.
