Thurcaston & Cropston Gardening Club welcomed ‘Brother’ Michael Brown to our meeting on 8th September. Dressed in the costume of a medieval monk he gave a fascinating talk on the way of life in a medieval monastery and the resident’s total dependence on their gardens. In a Monastery Garden “The Bible was the Truth and the garden (Eden) was the place of life.”

During the very early Monastic system – 500 to 1500 - monks and nuns lived a very singular existence and they were encouraged to be as self-sufficient as possible, meeting their fellow monks only for prayers. Their gardens were the very lifeblood of a monk’s existence, a symbolic place where medicinal plants had both therapeutic use and religious meaning and they had to provide everything for their own wellbeing. Plants supplied food, clothes and medicines. The ‘plot’ was quite small and would usually consist of a ‘wall of plants’ around a lawn with trees around the edge for shade but not overhanging the pathway for fear of insects, particularly spiders, dropping on to their heads.

Some flower types were grown by everyone as they could provide essential needs, both practical and religious. The most common were; The Madonna Lily – the Holy Flower – white; representing the body of the Virgin Mary. Sweet Violet would provide sugar – Violet; represented the cloak of the Virgin Mary. Milk Thistle would provide milk – and represented milk from the Virgin Mary. Roses, particularly the Apothecary Rose, was used in medicines and to make Rose Oil and Rose Water and all sorts of cosmetics – and represented the Blood of Christ. Iris Florentina – their rhizomes were dried, crushed and used as ‘talc’ to refresh bed linen and even to add flavour to homemade sweets? Many types of flowers could be crushed to make inks and paint. Water was always plentiful from ponds, streams and wells, but fountains were very special, the three states of water; the bubbling sparkling source, the shallow moving sheet and the still silent pool represented the Holy Trinity “Joy comes from devoting oneself to a garden” Monasteries in those early days were very modest affairs not the elaborate buildings they later became. Jarrow Abbey and Mount Grace Priory in the North East are fine examples of very early monasteries. They had singular ‘cells’ with a single window so the need for an outdoor space for quiet reflection as well as physical activity was essential to the monk’s wellbeing. There were communal areas, for instance, the Abbey cemetery doubled up as the orchard with a multitude of nut and fruit trees grown there. The mulberry tree was always included for symbolic purposes as it represented the crucifixion. In those early days fresh fruit was seen as unhealthy so everything was washed and cooked. Far away from this meagre life of the monk was the life of the head monk, the Abbot. He was regarded as landed gentry and had a very large elaborate ‘garden’ with hunting parks, woodlands and large fishponds with grandiose fountains. Apart from the animals caught in the park, doves in large ‘dove houses’ were sold at a penny-a-pair, bees were kept for their honey and their wax was used to make their numerous candles. This additional food source was a welcome addition to the, mainly, vegetarian diet. It’s easy to imagine medieval churches and monasteries as dour, grey buildings but the introduction of plants into church ceremonies would make them a riot of colour and fragrance. Certain plants became a natural part of the religious calendar – Lilies and Palm at Easter, Holly and Ivy at Christmas for instance. Hundreds of years of Monastic life, virtually unchanged in all that time, was brought to an end when Henry VIII set out the reformation in the early 1500’s, it was not until the 1800’s that monks and nuns made their ‘comeback’ and developed a more enlightened lifestyle. “Get a garden, what kind you get matters not.”

Protecting Your Family’s Inheritance Article by Klara Hesling

Our frontline staff follow Government guidelines for visiting you in your home and they are in the vaccination program with second course completed. LevLaw Ltd remains here for you. Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually. But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT).

Say Farewell To The Rockets! Article by Loros

A galaxy of spectacular Rockets will be touching down at Leicester’s National Space Centre on 9th-10th October for a final weekend of space-tastic fun! The Rocket Round Leicester art trail, 40 giant Rockets plus 35 mini Junior Jets, have been weaving a trail around the city for the past ten weeks. Brought to Leicester by local charity LOROS Hospice together with leading art event producers Wild in Art, the Rockets will gather together for the last time before being auctioned off to raise muchneeded funds for LOROS. Tickets are available now for this special weekend, sponsored by the University of Leicester, which is a great opportunity to see the beautiful designs in one place. These include the hugely popular Blue Army Rocket, sponsored by Leicester City Football Club, Richard III Rocket King which has brought the king-in-the-car-park to life and many other favourites like Bogswamp, a giant blue fluffy monster. Laura Betts, Fundraising Manager at LOROS Hospice, said: “Our Farewell Weekend is the perfect opportunity to catch any Rockets you may have missed, and say goodbye to your favourites! You can also unlock any missed rewards on the app and snap that perfect selfie! It will be an out-ofthis-world family weekend!”

than 2,500 people across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, delivering free, high-quality, compassionate care to terminally ill patients, their family and carers. LOROS has to raise £8.4 million from the local community every year to be able to deliver that care.

A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries.

Laura adds: “The trail has been a real smash hit with the people of Leicester, bringing the community together after 18 months of isolation. The Rockets have taking us on a voyage of recovery as well as discovery. Now we’re inviting everyone to come along to say farewell to these magnificent Rockets, and raise funds for your local hospice in the process.”

As the surviving partner does not own the deceased’s share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children’s inheritance is protected. This last point can be particular interest to couples who have come together and have children with different partners.

Leicester City Mayor Sir Peter Soulsby said: “The rocket trail has been a colourful and captivating highlight of summer in Leicester, and I’m delighted that we could host it and support LOROS in their incredible work. Seeing all of the rockets in one place for the first time will be a spectacular sight, and I’m sure many people will snap up the chance to do this and to help raise funds for their local hospice.” Simon Jenner, Director of BID Leicester, said: “It’s been fantastic to see people of all ages in the city centre enjoying the Rocket Round Leicester trail. The additional footfall in the city has been a great boost to our local businesses during the summer months. The Farewell Event is a great opportunity to see all the sculptures one final time in an out-of-this-world setting, all whilst raising money for a good cause.”

Many of the artists who painted the Rocket sculptures will be on hand to answer questions and talk about the inspiration behind their amazing designs too.

The Farewell Weekend heralds the end of the Rocket Round Leicester trail. Next stop will be the glittering grand auction on Wednesday 13th October, where, it is hoped, they will raise tens of thousands of pounds for LOROS Hospice.

All the proceeds raised by tickets and merchandise will go to support LOROS patient care. Each year the charity supports more

A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensuring that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property, they can still sell the property and the proceeds to be used to purchase a new property, the terms of the Trust remain over the new property.

if you gift the money there could be a need to pay inheritance tax in the future subject to inheritance tax gifting rules.

Article by Anstey Gala Committee Well what a relief after all that lockdown! On September 4th, people flocked to the Recreation Ground in Anstey to meet others and have some fun in the fresh air, and luckily the weather behaved itself. There were 39 different stalls, ranging from children’s fairground rides to craft stalls. The great majority were local community organisations. The dog show was, as ever, a great success. There was a variety of entertainment in the central arena, including public participation in the limbo contest, the resurrected wheelbarrow race, and cups of tea outside the Jubilee Hall, which all made for a perfect afternoon. The Summer Gala is organised by Anstey people. Many are members of some community group, and profits from the Gala (after paying for insurance, supplies, entertainment etc) are shared by the community groups that are represented. In this way the local community benefits. The organisers would welcome some more help; meetings are once a month, last less than an hour and are very friendly. Deborah Taylor

County Councillor for Bradgate Division T: 0116 2350126 E: deborah.taylor@leics.gov.uk It is with great sadness that I write to inform you that my mother-in-law, Gladys Taylor, sadly passed away on 31st August 2021 at the grand age of 101. Gladys was an Anstey girl, well-known and wellloved in the village. Gladys had been living in a care home for the past 10 years. She retained her sense of humour, and her bubbly spirit and smiling face, right up until the end. She passed away in her care home, very peacefully. We are filled with sadness but celebrate her long life and realise that we were very lucky to have had her in our lives for so long. Thank you to everyone who has passed on their condolences. We have also received many cards and flowers and many people have shared their happy memories of Gladys with us. It has brought us great comfort. I am continuing to work as much as I can, but I hope you will understand if my response is slower than normal, and things may take a little longer to sort out. I do need to take some time out to come to terms with our loss. This is the reason for a short report this month and I hope to have a fuller report next month.

Parents and carers unable to apply online can telephone the Customer Service Centre on 0116 305 6684 and request a form be sent out to them. Domestic Abuse More than £1.1m is being invested in providing safe accommodation and support for victims of domestic abuse and their children in Leicestershire. The funding will ensure they are able to access much-needed support such as therapy and counselling, as well as a safe place to live. Leicestershire County Council is now seeking feedback from anyone who has used domestic support services in the area in the past, to help shape the new plans. The council has been allocated more than £1.1m from a £125m government funding pot so it can carry out a new duty placed on councils as part of the landmark Domestic Abuse Act, which aims to strengthen the support offered to victims. The county’s seven district councils were also granted nearly £230,000 in total. Plans for additional support in Leicestershire include more accommodation for families in need, specialist mental health support workers for children and a substance misuse worker to support families who need it. If you live in Leicester, Leicestershire or Rutland and have experienced domestic violence or sexual abuse, you can contact the UAVA helpline on 0808 8020028. Highway Fund I have reported previously on the £25,000 highway fund, allocated to me from County Hall. This fund is to spend in my Bradgate villages and is to be used to make small improvements to the highway. I am just in the process of collecting suggestions from all my various Parish Councils. I will review the requests, then select the projects I think will give the best value for money and have the greatest impact for residents. I will discuss the options with my allocated highway officer, get quotes for the projects and hopefully start to implement some improvements towards the end of the year and into next year. School Term Dates Nearly 18,000 responses have been received from people sharing their views on when they consider school holidays in Leicester and Leicestershire should fall. In the eight-week consultations held by Leicestershire County and Leicester City Councils this summer, the majority of responses said they didn’t want big changes to the existing term-time patterns. Leicestershire County Council’s cabinet approved to opt to preserve Leicestershire’s ‘July Fortnight’, an earlier October half-term and a longer autumn term. The city council will also look to adopt the same option when their meet, following feedback from city residents. The consultations ran separately, but at the same time and with the same proposed patterns, and presented a number of options, which included bringing the city and county in line with national holidays. Secondary School Places Please note that parents and carers need to apply for their preferred secondary schools by Sunday 31st October 2021. Parents and carers with children due to start secondary school in Leicestershire in September 2022 can now apply for school places. The application process is open and parents and carers are requested to complete the application forms online. More information about schools in Leicestershire and the application process can be found here: www.leicestershire.gov.uk/education-andchildren/schools-colleges-and-academies/school-admissions/apply-for-asecondary-school-place

Anstey Chess Club Article by Ben Vaughan

As a club, we are delighted to announce a few things and further details are below: We have a new venue! (Coupled with financial support) The league Season starts in October New Players New Venue Following on from losing the Stadon's upstairs room due to a long term hire (thanks must go to the Stadon for their support of the club), we are now playing at the Methodist Church in Anstey, on Cropston Road near the pedestrian lights. We have had to hire this spacious playing room and we have received some excellent financial support so far from our (now paying) members. We have been forced to start charging our members annual memberships and everybody so far has fully understood the situation and in a lot of cases, have overpaid and therefore donated extra money to the club. It really is very humbling for us. To date, we have also received a very kind donation of £200 from The Anstey Town Charity - an organisation which helps local clubs/organisations in Anstey with funding. If you are such an organisation, please get in touch with me, or the Parish Council and we will happily share their details with you. We also have grant applications in with the Parish Council and Charnwood Borough Council for further funding to help us with the running costs of the club. New League Season As a club, we are delighted that Over the Board (hereafter OTB) chess is returning. Having played an awful lot of chess online over the last 18 months, there is nothing quite like pushing pawns OTB rather than with a mouse or trackpad on a laptop or PC. The 2nd team kick off our season away at Heathcote Arms on Tuesday 5th October. The first home match is the 1st team at Home vs Latimer 1 on Thursday 14th October. The League Management Committee - hereafter LMC - have stipulated that only players who have been vaccinated against COVID-19 may play league chess this year. This is of course to protect the playing personnel as much as possible to enable OTB chess this year. It is down to individual players/ venues to follow their own COVID protocols. We have been playing at our new venue since Thursday 2nd September and so far, we have sanitised hands and kept as safe as we can playing OTB chess. Hand sanitiser is available at all times during sessions. If you come down and would like to wear a mask, please feel free to do so. Before all of that, we do have a home friendly pencilled in for Thursday 30th September at home vs Radcliffe and Bingham chess club in Notts. Myself and my club mate Mick have played a few games for them and the idea of a friendly dates back a few years to when we first started playing for them. Please do come down to the club, we have the use of the room at the Methodist Church until June next year (a 40 week hire) so we would love to fill the room every week with new and old chess players. Many people have referred to the Netflix series 'The Queen's Gambit' giving people the chess bug so if that has fuelled your chess fire, please do come and join us for a relaxing game or two against our members.

Anstey WI

Article by Sheila Timms At the very well attended Anstey Gala, Anstey WI ran successful stall, selling cakes, crafts and craft kits, dog biscuits and plants. It also showcased the origins, 80 years ago, of the WI in Anstey, with an attractive display by Sheila Price. Angela Rossa ran a game, “Find the Dog’s Nose,” which contributed a good deal to the record total raised, which will go to the community library, and the local air ambulance. On the following Monday, members of the committee were entertained to afternoon tea by Sylvia Cole, as a generous thank you for their effort keeping the WI going through the pandemic. It was a very enjoyable afternoon, and a delicious tea. Sylvia had even organised good weather, and she and husband John have a lovely garden with a spectacular view towards Old John. Continuing a busy week, on the Wednesday evening came the Institute’s first face to face meeting in well over a year, thanks to the re-opening of the Jubilee Hall. To our delight, it also attracted a number of visitors. The speaker was Caroline Roberts, a Blue Badge guide with an encyclopaedic knowledge of Leicester’s history. There was some friendly banter between her and her friend our programme secretary about which of her talks she was to give, and that set the tone for an evening of fun and laughter. She spoke about the churches of Leicester, with the odd diversion on to the theme of fallen women. Make of that what you will; you really had to be there. Very few of us knew of the existence of All Saints Church on Highcross Street, which has a leper squint through which lepers could see the elevation of the host at the altar. Other redundant churches include St Mark’s and St Peter’s, both in Belgrave. From the latter the priests could go through a tunnel for assignations with nuns at the nearby convent, (those fallen women, you see.) After the meeting, the WI’s WhatsApp group was abuzz with members saying how wonderful the meeting had been.

Deborah Taylor Borough Councillor for Anstey

T: 0116 2350126 E: cllr.deborah.taylor@charnwood.gov.uk Our meetings are now starting to pick up and Paul, as Mayor has, been very busy. We were both delighted to attend the Anstey Gala on Saturday 4th September. It was so nice to see the recreation ground so busy (we thought half the village must have attended!), and the weather stayed sunny and dry.

Member Grant Scheme at Charnwood Borough Council. For the 2021/22 financial year, each borough councillor is allocated an annual budget of £500 to support projects that bring benefits to their ward. Organisations currently running projects with community benefit in Charnwood are invited to apply for a minimum grant of £250, and up to a maximum grant of £500. Applications may be made to more than one councillor, to boost the funding you could receive for your organisation. Funding can be provided towards community events, activities, equipment, and uniformed groups such as Scouts, Guides, Cubs and Brownies. We would like our local groups in Anstey to come forward and have a chat about possible projects that this money could benefit. For more information please visit: www.charnwood.gov.uk/pages/member_grants

On Tuesday 14th September we both attended the extraordinary council meeting, where we enjoyed watching Leicester City Football Club receive the Freedom of the Borough in recognition of the club’s incredible success in recent years and its connection to Charnwood (the Foxes’ training ground is in the Borough near Seagrave).

Boundary Review A consultation is being held on new ward boundaries in Charnwood. New boundaries are being proposed for council wards within Charnwood Borough Council.

As our schools are now back after the summer break and as events are taking place and clubs are now beginning to restart, we thought it would be a good idea to write a gentle reminder. We need to remember that the virus remains with us, but we must learn to live with it whilst we carry on with our everyday lives. Please continue to look after yourselves (being healthy will boost your immunity), get the vaccination (your first and/ or second dose if you haven’t done so already), and take precautions (especially in large groups).

The Local Government Boundary Commission wants to hear what residents and local organisations think about the proposals. A 10-week consultation on the proposals will run until 8th November 2021. The Commission is the independent body that draws these boundaries. It is reviewing Charnwood to make sure councillors will represent about the same number of electors in their area, and that ward arrangements will help the council work effectively. The Commission has published proposals for changes to Charnwood. It is proposing that there should be three single councillor wards, 14 twocouncillor wards, and seven three-councillor wards. The boundaries of 26 wards should change; two, Anstey and Quorn & Mountsorrel Castle, are proposed to remain unchanged. The Commission has a section on their website where residents can see the detail of the proposals and comment on the names of wards and their boundaries. This can be found here: https://consultation.lgbce.org.uk/ node/25847#Boundary%20Commission%20website Residents can also give their views by e-mail at reviews@lgbce.org.uk, and by post here: Review Officer (Charnwood) LGBCE PO Box 133 Blyth NE24 9FE

What’s On? If you are holding an event, you can now add it to Charnwood’s Borough Council ‘What’s On’ guide. You can submit your event via their website, and they will add it to the online calendar. It will also be included on the future ‘What's On’ email newsletters. Please remember to include as much detail as possible about your event, including the date and time, location, links (to booking pages or the event

To find out more or to add an event, please visit: www.charnwood.gov.uk/ pages/submit_event The Hope Bell Work to create a lasting memorial in Charnwood to mark the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on local communities is underway. The Hope Bell project, backed by the Loughborough Town Deal, will see the creation of a clock chime installation comprising four quarter chime bells and the main Hope Bell to sound the hours. The Hope Bell is a symbol of hope, thanks, and remembrance. It is intended to be a lasting memorial to all those in Charnwood who have lost their lives in the Covid-19 pandemic and will also be a tribute to the NHS and key workers. It will be a beacon of hope for the future. John Taylor and Co. cast the first bell for the project during the National Heritage Open Day on Saturday 1st September. It is anticipated the Hope Bell will be located in Queen’s Park, Loughborough. An interesting fact is that the four quarter bells will weigh between 3 cwt (152.4kg) and 8 cwt (406.4kg) and the main Hope Bell will weigh 1 ton 5 cwt (1,161.2kg), sound the note D (listen here: www. soundsnap.com/tags/d_note) and measure 4ft 4in (1.32m) in diameter. Some aspects of the project, such as messages left by people, could be funded by public subscription. The Town Deal Board wants the local community to be involved in the development of the Hope Bell project and welcomes any comments from residents. If you would like to have a say on the project in this early stage, please visit: www.charnwood.gov.uk/ hopebell Mayoral Activity This month’s events began with attendance at the annual general meeting of Equality Action, where the Mayor is President, and attendance at the annual Community Mela, held at All Saints Parish Church in Loughborough. The Mayor and Mayoress, Ning Baines, had a great afternoon watching superb Indian dancing, and enjoying excellent Indian street food. Later in the month, the Mayor and Mayoress attended: • Chapman Street Gardens in Loughborough to see how well-kept they were and to enjoy a residents’ BBQ and buffet. • The Anstey Gala, and the Anstey Village Gala Service on the following Sunday run by Churches Together in Anstey and the Anstey Parish Council. • Beating Retreat by ABF, the Soldiers’ Charity, in Oakham Marketplace followed by a reception by the Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland, Dr Sarah Furness, at Oakham Castle. • The Passion/Shepshed Community Café fundraiser. This organisation works with young people to improve their life choices and chances, whilst also providing a great café at the same time! A great cause and a great concept. Do visit if you are in the area. The café is at 8 The Bull Ring, Shepshed. • The Junior Sailing Regatta Annual Final, run by the fabulous Leicestershire and Rutland Youth Sailing Association, on John Merrick’s Lake at Watermead Country Park North in Syston and gave a speech. They work and hold courses for both children and adults so do join if you fancy getting out your sea legs! • Loughborough Music Tuition’s youth musical theatre concert at the Mountsorrel Memorial Centre – what a treat. Charnwood’s got talent! • The Mayor also attended and gave a speech at Bill and Winnie Cooling’s 40th business anniversary party at the Cedars Hotel in Loughborough, having run their fabulous butchers, Bill and Winnie Cooling Butchers at Loughborough Market since 1981 (when Olivia Newton-John’s ‘Physical’ spent 6 weeks at No.1!). The Mayor would also like to remind residents that they are invited to the LWA (Living Without Abuse) 45th Anniversary Winter Ball on Saturday 4th December at the Leicester Marriott Hotel, giving us all a chance to let our hair down, dress up, and have a good time, all in a good cause to support this hard-working domestic abuse charity. LWA is one of the two charities the Mayor is supporting this year, the other being Marie Curie. The party starts between 6pm and 7pm! For £45, attendees get terrific value: a three-course meal, a welcome drink, and a DJ and entertainment until 1am. If you are interested in attending, please visit: https://lwa.enthuse. com/cf/lwa-winter-ball. If you are a community group, a group of friends, or a business organization, and want to book a table for £400 for 10 people, you can do this through the Mayor’s Office by emailing: mayor@ charnwood.gov.uk The Mayor and Mayoress really look forward to seeing you there. If you have any issues or concerns, we are here to help. Deborah and Paul

David Snartt Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate T: 01530 244804 E: cllr.david.snartt@charnwood.gov.uk

Political Map for Charnwood. There is an opportunity to have your say on a new political map for Charnwood. A press release has been issued by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England about the new boundaries being proposed for Council Wards in the Borough. The Commission wants to hear what residents and local organisations think about the proposals. A ten week consultation on the proposals will run until 8th November 2021. The Commission is the independent body that draws these boundaries, it is reviewing Charnwood Borough to make sure Councillors will represent about the same number of electors, and the Ward arrangements will help the Council work effectively. It is proposing that there should be three single Councillor Wards, 14 two Councillor Wards and 7 three Councillor Wards. All but two of the existing Ward boundaries will change under the proposals. My Ward of Forest Bradgate which includes the Parishes of Newtown Linford, Ulverscroft and Woodhouse has a proposed small change to the boundary and will still be represented by a single Councillor. Since the development of Grange Park a small part of the estate encroached into Woodhouse Parish. Therefore, it is proposed that the 25 properties are realigned with the rest of the estate in the neighbouring Ward. I am pleased that the Forest Bradgate Ward largely stays the same, in my view, it reflects the nature of the rural communities within the heart of Charnwood Forest. The Commission has a dedicated section on its website where people can see the detail of the proposals and comment on the names of the Wards and their boundaries. People can give their views by e-mail at reviews@ lgbce.org.uk and by post, Review Officer (Charnwood), LGBCE, PO Box 133, Blyth. NE24 9FE. There is also information on the Charnwood Borough Council website. Council Explores Options. Charnwood Borough Council is looking to explore the feasibility of creating a more efficient and environmentally-friendly replacement office base in Loughborough. The Council has identified a potential location for new offices with a long term plan to move to new premises to reduce running costs and prioritise funding on services. It would also reduce the Council’s carbon footprint. A report has come forward to Cabinet, seeking approval to explore the feasibility of creating new offices on Southfield Road Extension car park, about 50 metres from the current offices in Southfields Road. The creation of any new building would enable the sale of the existing office complex. The site is identified as having potential for 163 homes in the Charnwood Local Plan 2021-37 Pre-submission Document. Volunteer to Make a Difference. I have received information from the NHS which I thought you may be interested to read. ‘Do you want to make a difference to health and wellbeing of other and play an important role in shaping local healthcare. NHS partners in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland are inviting people passionate about health and social care to volunteer their time and apply to sit on two assurance groups. At a very exciting yet challenging time in the history of the NHS it is more important than ever before to have the support of vibrant and creative people, who can help to ensure that the local care is designed around the needs of the patients. People who feel they can review feedback and opinions received about healthcare and decide if they have been listened to and considered, are encouraged to apply to be part of the Public and Patient Involvement Assurance Group (PPIAG) or the Alliance Leadership Board. Members of the groups will be helping to ensure that better quality care is provided in a way that is important to local residents. They will review information and assure themselves that the views of public and patients have been sought and considered when services are redesigned and delivered. The groups are at the forefront of supporting the design of plans and proposals for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. The NHS is also seeking

make a difference to the health and wellbeing of others, by making sure their voices are heard when health services are designed?

The NHS in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland are looking for people with a passion for the NHS, who can dedicate 3-4 hours a month to join other enthusiastic volunteers on a range of involvement groups. Whether the NHS has impacted on your life directly or indirectly, or you want to use your experience and knowledge through volunteering, improve your employment prospects or simply make new friends, volunteer your time today and make a difference to the lives of others. “The NHS is precious to me and I want health and care services to be developed with a strong voice for local people and communities. The NHS is used by everyone at some point in their life, often at times when they are feeling vulnerable. It’s crucial that services are planned using patients, carers and citizen’s experience.” Evan Rees, Chairman of the Public and Patient Involvement Assurance Group (PPIAG)

a Chair for the PPIAG to motivate and encourage PPIAG members to assure public and patient involvement work and enable it to impact on decision making’. For anyone interested I have enclosed the poster which gives details on how to view the application pack and how to apply. Applications close on the 7th October 2021. First Bells for Covid-19 Memorial. A memorial to mark the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on local communities in Charnwood is starting to take shape. The first three, quarter bells of the planned Hope Bell project were cast at Loughborough’s iconic John Taylor and Co bell foundry during a heritage open weekend in September. The Hope Bell project will see the creation of a clock chime installation comprising four quarter chime bells and the main Hope Bell to sound the hours. The four quarter bells will weigh between 3 cwt and 8cwt and the main Hope Bell will weigh 1 ton 5cwt, sound the note D and measure 4ft 4ins in diameter. It is anticipated the memorial would be located in Queens Park, Loughborough. The Hope Bell will be a lasting memorial to all those in Charnwood who have lost their lives in the Covid-19 pandemic and be a tribute to NHS and key workers. It will also be a beacon of hope for the future. Support for Afghan Refugees. Councils across Leicestershire and Rutland are working together to coordinate their response to resettle Afghan refugees. The Government has two schemes to help resettle Afghan people who have either worked with the British forces or are classed as vulnerable. All Councils across the UK have been asked to support the schemes.

The key focus in Leicestershire and Rutland is finding suitable self-contained properties for families. Owners of properties in both counties which could be suitable are being urged to register them via an online portal. Individuals, businesses and landlords who want to pledge any offers of homes to accommodate people arriving from Afghanistan, the form is available on the Government website. While donations of items can be offered online, the Councils are urging people to put that on hold for the time being as the focus is on finding suitable self-contained homes. Support packages will be in place to help families settle in.

Freedom of the Borough. Charnwood Borough Council at a special meeting held on Tuesday 14th September 2021 at Loughborough Town Hall granted the Freedom of the Borough to Leicester City Football Club. This in recognition of the club’s incredible success in recent years and its connection to Charnwood. The FA Cup winners and the 2015/16 Premier League Champions opened a £100 million training facility in the Borough in 2020 at Seagrave. The Freedom of the Borough is the highest honour the Council can bestow. It does not carry any privileges or powers but is only awarded in exceptional circumstances where the recipient rendered eminent service to the Borough. They will have demonstrated outstanding achievement in the Borough and/or on the international stage which has brought pride and satisfaction to the Borough. I was pleased to support conferring the title of Honorary Freedom of the Borough to Leicester City Football Club. I was Chairman of the County Council during the 2015/16 season and Mayor of Charnwood when they won the FA Cup. During those years I was able to hear first hand from local residents how much pleasure and joy these remarkable achievements have given people, especially through the recent difficult times we have all experienced, winning the FA Cup certainly lifted spirits enormously within our local communities. If you need to contact me on any issues, please write to 10 Groby Lane, Newtown Linford, Leicester. LE6 0HH email cllr.david.snartt@charnwood. gov.uk or telephone 01530 244804.

Home games in October include a visit form Old Newtonians on 9th, Market Bosworth on 16th and Mellish on 23rd with Away fixtures on the other Saturdays.

On Saturday 28th August Anstey Rugby Club kicked off the 2021/22 campaign hosting Nottinghamians for the first game of full, on full contact, scrums and all, game of rugby since March 2020.

A full fixture list is in place right round until the first weekend in May 2022 when it will be President’s Day followed by our 40th/42nd Dinner in June and the AGM in the same month.

It was great to see our pitch all fully line marked, flags in the right places and goals with padded post protectors but still with a wonky cross bar at the Eastern end.

It was good to meet some new potential players (and many old faces) on our stand at the Anstey Gala on 4th September. Now we need to see you up at Link Road

Changing rooms and showers hired from Martin High all open on time.

The full 2021/22 Updated fixture list is on our website at www.pitchero.com/clubs/anstey/teams/41334/fixtures-results

So ready for action. Both Anstey and Nottinghamians fielded a large squad of players which were rotated every 20 minutes giving everyone some match time. This was a friendly, but highly competitive match where the Nottingham side were determined to come away victors. But a strong performance from Anstey with tries from Aaron Mahoney, Matt Belcher and Andy Pollock amongst others and with both old a new players making a great contribution saw the final score Anstey 39 Nottinghamians 14. Week two and it was the Anstey Gala at Home and the First Team Away at Castle Donnington. Again we managed to let the Home team score two converted Tries getting them 14 points….But your Anstey team scored 59, so final score Castle Donnington 14 Anstey 59. Our opponents for week 3, Aylestone St. James called off due to a lack of players, so a very useful couple of hours training took place in readiness for the League Campaign that kicks of at Belgrave on 18th September, with Anstey at Home to Market Harborough on 25th. Support is always welcome at our Link Road ground. Access to the pitch can be via the footpath next to Martin High on Link Road, at the end of Holgate Close or from behind the trees adjacent to the

Towards the end of September, Diana and Richard attended the monthly Parish Council Meeting where the resumption of our village films was approved. We intend to present the first film on Friday 12th November. We still have “Downton Abbey” available. We had intended to show “Fisherman’s Friends” and “Judy” in the following months but we would welcome suggestions about future films.

Funeral arrangements can be made in the comfort of your own home if preferred.

We do, however, need more volunteers to cover sickness or holidays. We look forward to seeing you during the winter.
