VENTURE THEATRE NEWS “It's a very cathartic experience to dare to lift the rock and see what actually goes on behind some closed doors.” This intriguing comment was made recently by the Director of our next production, The Anniversary, a wicked comedy by Bill Macilwraith.

The play dissects the family unit, and in particular motherhood, or a certain version of it. The mother in question has three sons whom she has lacerated with her warped love, binding them to her with gifts, threats and a ruthless exploitation of their weaknesses.

But as the family is unwillingly brought together to celebrate Mum's wedding anniversary - regardless of a deceased Dad - revolt is in the air. People will probably recognise the relationships between the family members in the play, though

hopefully their own experiences won't be so extreme!

Director, Dave Steward told us “I must have an affinity with 1960s plays as all the plays I've directed at The Venture are from that decade. I find there's a stark down-to-earth honesty about plays from that period but maybe unlike today, an undercurrent of hope as well. 60s playwrights were afraid of nothing.”

The play opens on Thursday 18th and runs to Saturday 20th February and from Wednesday 24th to Saturday 27th February 2016. Tickets at £8 and £9 are available from Ashby Tourist Information Centre (tel 01530 411767) or online at www.ticketsource.co.uk/ ashbydramaticsociety.

For lovers of malicious gossip, jaw-dropping insults and brutally funny one-liners, The Anniversary is two hours of pure bliss!

We meet monthly at The Beeches, Ashby and enjoy a talk followed by a lunch together. But, there is more.

Activities are arranged throughout the year and in 2016 members and partners will be able to enjoy a Spring Lunch, Phantom of the Opera in Birmingham, a quiz and more. Outings are being arranged which will probably suit men only – in the past we have visited the Jaguar assembly line, a gypsum mine and Measham brickworks.

Our objective is to enjoy ourselves in an environment which can replace the workplace camaraderie that many of us miss.

All members are encouraged to take an active part including giving a talk on a subject of choice. Alternatively members can arrange for someone else to give a talk on their behalf. Interesting talks by guest speakers included working in Siberia, Ashby food bank and the art of thatching.

CLASSICAL “GREATS” FROM THE LOUGHBOROUGH ORCHESTRA For their forthcoming winter concert, the Loughborough Orchestra will be playing music which is high on the classical “Hit List”.

The Elgar Cello Concerto is a highly regarded cornerstone of the cello repertoire and its performance by Will Robertson, pictured here, promises to be a treat for the audience.

Will was one of the talented pupils to attend Chetham’s music school before gaining a place to study at the Royal Academy of Music.

The cello that he will be playing is on loan from the Royal Academy and allows his beautiful playing to sing above the orchestra! Will has performed widely in this country and has also travelled as far as Singapore to tour with a Chamber Orchestra. Will is looking forward to playing this famous Concerto with the orchestra.

To introduce the concert will be the melodies of the Karelia Suite by Jean Sibelius. This is a piece which is condensed from “Karelia Music” that Sibelius was commissioned to write. It is based on Finnish folk music and although it was written early in his career, it has a commonality with the nationalistic nature of much of his later compositions. Sibelius became known as Finland’s national composer.

And last, but by no means least, is Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony.

This last of the Tchaikovsky symphonies was probably his favourite and is full of lush melodies.

There are strident tunes which grab attention and follow on from teasing, enigmatic rhythms passing between instruments. Other enchanting moments are better heard and felt than described!

This “must hear” programme is at Trinity Methodist Church Centre, Royland Rd., Loughborough on January 23rd at 7.30pm. Tickets are available via the website www. loughboroughorchestra.org.uk or from members of the orchestra.

Our new exhibition for the months of February and March will feature the history of the hamlet of Lount. Included will be photographs, maps, pottery, information on old housing and some aspects of the Staunton Harold estate such as the school, which also serviced Lount children. The exhibition is being collated by John MacDonald, Betty Cawte and Trevor Stewart.

The Romans are coming! In February, the Kids’ Club at the Museum will be looking at the Romans. Come and make a centurion’s helmet or sacred altar. Discover your Roman name and much more. The club is on Saturday 6th February from 11am till 4pm. Open to all children of primary school age, who must be accompanied by an adult.

Museum volunteers are working on supporting material for the Friends of the Bath Grounds. The Guide Book “Ashby de la Zouch: The Spa Town” by Kenneth Hillier (first published in 1983 and with a new edition in 2003) is again being updated by the author, with information about happenings on the Grounds since the 1980s. It will be ready

Four volunteers - Pat Dixon, Wendy Freer, Lorna Titley and Ken Hillier - are producing two Information Boxes on the Spa: one for Primary School children and one for adults. These will be available from the start of the Autumn Term. Several walks and talks are also being planned, with the theme of the Spa Town. Further progress has also been made with our friends at St. Helen’s Church, with their exciting plans to develop the Cottage and provide information boards and displays in their new build and within the church itself. These partnerships are all evidence of the Museum working in conjunction with other groups to explain and enhance the town’s past heritage and present attractions.

FRIENDS OF ASHBY BATH GROUNDS ORGANISE FREE 2016 ACTIVITIES FOR ALL An exciting programme of free community activities and events is happening on and around Ashby’s Bath Grounds during 2016.

“There will be something to suit everyone; all ages and interests,” said Friends of Ashby Bath Grounds Secretary, Clare Birch.

Summer Camp next year will be at Whatton House for Charnwood 2015 - our local Jamboree. Places are still available.

Beaver Scouts (Oakley Colony)

The Duke of Edinburgh team are looking for new recruits to start this February 2016. At 13½ you can start your Bronze Level, at 15 Silver, and Gold you can start at 16.

It looks as if we may be running a Gold Group next year, after the success of this year’s Silver Expeditions, with Gold Expeditions taking place in 2016. Please contact us for more information.

Cubs Scouts (Oakley Pack)

We have sort of opened a new Cub Pack on Mondays after School running alongside our existing Beaver Colony. This is to accommodate young people who can’t make the Friday sessions, however some new volunteers to look after this up and coming Pack would be fantastic, so tell your friends and get the message out there for us.

By the time you read this we will have ran three Scout Taster Sessions at Diseworth School and have recruited new Adult Volunteers to run Beavers and Cubs in Diseworth - We Hope!

All these activities form part of the Heritage Lottery Funded “Bath Grounds Improved Accessibility and Community Heritage” project which has also helped finance the new path around the Grounds.

Community Archaeology

There will be 3 separate weeks of archaeological activities on the Bath Grounds during May, June and July, including sessions during weekdays, evenings and Saturday open days. All activities will be organised and supervised by professional archaeologists and fully insured.

You’ll have the chance to get hands-on experience of using the sophisticated geophysical instruments which archaeologists use nowadays to look into the past under our feet without digging up the ground. If you don’t want to get your hands dirty, you can watch what’s happening and learn a little about modern archaeology and the Bath Grounds’ fascinating history.

The archaeology events will kick off in March with an introductory talk by the professional archaeology team. This will be at Ashby Museum at 7:00 pm on Tuesday 22nd March. All are welcome but it would help if you could let the Friends know you are coming so they have an idea of numbers.

Community Mosaics

The Community Mosaics will be

happening on the Bath Grounds on Sunday 29th May, during the Ashby Arts Festival weekend.

A professional mosaic artist will be instructing on the art of mosaics and you will be able to help create a large fish mosaic commemorating Ashby Castle’s fishponds. which were once located on the Bath Grounds and neighbouring Bullen’s Field. The fish mosaic will be incorporated into the new Bath Grounds Heritage Trail which is also being installed this year.

You will also get an opportunity to make yourself a souvenir mosaic coaster to take home (a small fee will be charged for coaster materials).

‘Ballad of the Bath Grounds’

A ballad written by a local songwriter is to be performed on the Bath Grounds on the Sunday, 29th May 2016 during the Ashby Arts Festival weekend. The aim is to bring people of all ages together to play/sing this bespoke work to make the Heritage Event day really special.

‘Polkas and Pustules’

Pudding Bag productions have made a short dramatic film, ‘Polkas and Pustules’ based around the history of the Ivanhoe Spa. This will be shown at the Venture Theatre on Saturday 28th May as part of the ‘Quick Flicks 2016’ Arts Festival event.

Guided walks and talks

Two Bath Grounds guided walks and four lectures will be given

by Ashby Museum as part of the programme, kicking off with a combined talk and walk on Saturday 23rd April. Again further details will be published nearer the time but you can let the Friends know you are interested through any of the contact options below.

ASHBY CIVIC SOCIETY - MEETING Members heard this month that Ashby Civic Society has recently discovered £246,000 given to the Council by developers for local healthcare has not been used. Councillors advised the five year time period for its use has now expired and the money is in danger of being returned to developers plus interest.

MEASHAM’S TOWER OF LIGHT The idea of the Tower of Light at Measham is to give anyone and everyone, no matter what Nationality or religion, the chance to remember a loved one at Christmas, by sponsoring a light bulb on the church tower of St Laurence Church, Measham.

The bulbs were sponsored by a donation, and that bulb, when lit, represents the donor’s thoughts.

The lights on the church tower were illuminated as a separate part of the switching on ceremony for the impressive Measham village Christmas lights, and were visible from all over the village.

Those who sponsored the lights were sent acknowledgement cards, which had a relevant verse printed on them.

The money raised from the donations from the Tower of Light on this last occasion totalled £1,721.00, specifically in order to help purchase equipment for the Measham Welfare Junior Football Club.

LRWT NORTH WEST GROUP

The MWJFC is a community football club providing a safe environment for young people to actively participate in football. It allows youngsters to get involved in local league competitions, on a weekly basis. This develops social skills, physical attributes, psychological awareness, and technical ability in young players from 8-16 years of age. The club consists of various teams ranging from under 8s to under 16s, both boys and girls, and presently has about 80 members.

It is thanks to the generosity of our donors in Measham and the surrounding villages which has made the presentation of this cheque for £1,721.00 possible.

We are a friendly group which meets monthly for talks, visits, conservation work and social events.

CHARNWOOD ROOTS – A PROJECT FOR THE WHOLE CHARNWOOD COMMUNITY Since 2014, the Charnwood Roots project has been working with local people to investigate the rich history of the Charnwood area. Backed by a team from the University of Leicester, we have been helping local communities to understand more about the past lives of the people and places of Charnwood.

We have a brilliant team of volunteers taking part in a diverse range of activities, from landscape surveys and archaeological digs, through to finding and analysing the vast collection of documentary sources that help piece together the fascinating history of Charnwood’s villages and towns.

What Will You Discover?

We simply never know what we might find! Recently, our volunteers have discovered references to Robin Hood in a Belton court roll, information about an eighteenth-century ferret house in Maplewell, and a parish collection for French refugees in a seventeenth-

century churchwarden’s account for Thurcaston.

We are still looking for volunteers to help us look through these exciting documents. It doesn’t matter if you have no experience at all in investigating history, all that’s needed is enthusiasm and a small amount of your time. Full training will be provided at no charge, and you will be able to volunteer your time as and when it suits you – some of our volunteers work at home, some meet up locally, whilst others enjoy regular visits to the Record Office in Wigston.

CHARNWOOD BRAS Workshops popular with couples Volunteers are celebrating five years of running successful antenatal workshops for couples expecting a baby.

The workshops were introduced in response to comments The Charnwood BRAS (Breastfeeding Reassurance And Support) group

were hearing from couples who felt they didn’t know enough about breastfeeding before having a baby.

The group now runs three workshops a month (in Loughborough, Shepshed and Birstall) and dads are encouraged to join their partners to find out about breastfeeding so they can provide the best support possible after the birth of their baby.

One of the volunteers, Tamsin Robinson from Anstey, says “The workshops cover a lot of useful information which helps families get off to the best possible start with their baby. We’re helped by a colourful puppet, plenty of dolls and some knitted boobs which are always a talking point!”

Another volunteer, Fern Desbrow who lives in Thurmaston, says “Breastfeeding is a wonderful experience for both mum and baby and there are still a lot of myths and stigmas surrounding breastfeeding – it’s great to be making the correct information and support more readily available.”

Section 106 Money

Since my election to Ashby Town Council in May, I’ve been striving to have an influence; not easy when you’re a minority party representative. I’m particularly interested in planning and one aspect that keeps cropping up is what is known as section 106 money. This is paid by a developer to the Planning Authority to help pay for essential infrastructure needed as a result of that development; schools, roads, sewerage, medical facilities etc. Locally, the Planning Authority is the District Council.

Though they are not usually responsible for spending this money, they have to hold it on account and distribute it to the relevant bodies when needed.

FIRST EVER ASHBY SANTA FUN RUN A HUGE SUCCESS Sunday saw a brand new charity event and 600+ Santa’s take to the streets of Ashby de la Zouch as the Rotary Club of Ashby Castle staged their inaugural Ashby Santa Fun Run & Walk in aid of Hospice Hope and other charities supported by Rotary.

A wet start to the day had threatened to put a dampner on the event as a dozen Rotarians from Ashby Castle fought against the elements to get the course set up and ready or the hoards of Santa’s arriving but the rain cleared up just in time as the first of the Santa’s arrived from 10:00.

Ready to greet the Santa’s as they arrived on the Bath Grounds was festive music and entertainment, the ‘real’ Rotary Santa and refreshments provided by Ashby Hastings Cricket Club.

The fun started at 10:45 as Maria Meadows from Fitness Republic got the 600+ Santa’s warmed up and ready for the run with a fun warm up as a sea of red danced around the Bath Grounds. This was just what was needed to get everybody in the mood for the fun run as the Santa’s set off on the 3km route at 11:00. The first of the runners arrived back within 12 minutes with the walkers arriving back comfortably before 12:00.

The event was very much set up to be a fun run or walk to be inclusive to all ages and abilities.

This was the first year that the Rotary Club had organised the event and were hoping for around 300 Santa’s to enter but were staggered as more and more

people signed up in the run up to the event with a final figure of 625. Santa’s entered from right across the local area including Staffordshire and Derbyshire as well as a healthy number from Ashby and the rest of North West Leicestershire. The Santa’s ranged in age from 3 months up to their 70’s which helped to create a wonderful community atmosphere as all were welcome.

Dale Warren from Ashby Castle Rotary Club said “The day really couldn’t have gone any better for us. The rain stopped just in time and the support and warm comments that we have received show that people had a fantastic day. To have over 600 Santa’s entering in our first year showed the amazing support we’ve had from the local communities and has helped us to raise thousands of pounds for our supported charities. I must also again pass on our thanks to all of the local businesses, organisations and people who supported us either financially or by providing services and marshaling on the day including Ashby Town Council who have wholeheartedly supported us in bringing a new community event to the town.”

It’s very clear to me is that this system is breaking down.

Many problems stem from the increasing privatisation and fragmentation of our public services. For instance, at one time the County Council was responsible for education, so they used the education s106 money for improving or building local schools. Likewise, the NHS was responsible for healthcare.

Nowadays things aren’t that simple. County Councils are no longer permitted to build new schools and, in healthcare, the latest “reforms” have resulted in a variety of different local and national bodies “at arm’s length from the government”, responsible for different aspects of commissioning services and a myriad of healthcare providers.

Co-ordination between these bodies leaves much to be desired.

As a consequence, Planning Authorities all over the country are sitting on vast sums of s106 money, much of which has no clear plans for being used. Indeed, in 2014 it was estimated that English Councils were holding £1.5bn. Now the big catch for the communities like ours who should be benefitting from this money is that, if it isn’t used within five years, it can be claimed back by the developer. According to the BBC, £9.8m was repaid over the 5 years to 2014.

Healthcare in Ashby

Here, in North West Leicestershire, £1.3m of the s106 money held by the District Council is allocated for healthcare and nearly £250,000 of this has been held for over five years without being used and could be claimed back at any time. £200,000 of that came from developments in Ashby and should have been spent here.

There’s another £350,000 from Ashby currently unexpired but,

apparently, with no plans to use it.

This, at a time when the disparate parts of the NHS were a) planning the closure of our Community Hospital, b) looking to relocate the various outpatient facilities from the Hospital and c) looking to relocate Ashby Health Centre to larger premises.

Lack of co-ordination has meant we now find ourselves with a spanking new but difficult to access Health Centre at the top of a hill on the edge of town, away from the sheltered housing it once served, with a pharmacy that isn’t allowed to dispense prescriptions.

We still have no clear indication on the relocation of the hospital outpatient facilities, though it seems physiotherapy will now take up space that should be used for Sports and Recreation at Hood Park, and we have no hospital beds, despite Ashby being earmarked to expand by over 60% in the District Council’s draft Local Plan. Furthermore, the hospital is now up for sale at an indicative price of £0.5m.

Altogether that’s £1m of public money that should be being spent wisely on improved healthcare in Ashby if the health authorities could get their act together. I am calling on the Town Council to get involved in this issue and press for the money to be used for Ashby before it is lost.

Section 106 Money for Ashby Town Centre

The Town Council can have a direct influence on one tranche of s106 money. £38,000 is being held by the District Council for improving Ashby Town Centre.

This must be used by July 2018. It’s what is left of £52,000 contributed by Aldi to help offset its effect on Town Centre vitality, £14,000 having been spent last year on up-lighting the Loudoun memorial. The Town Council is eligible to request the money to spend on a suitable Project but currently there are no agreed plans to do so. It’s essential this money is spent wisely; not on another vanity project. The rules are that it has to benefit the Town Centre and cannot be spent on entertainments or events. Now, I have many ideas on how this money could benefit the Town Centre, including refurbishment of the very tired street furniture and improved pedestrian signage; but I would very much like to hear your views on how it should be spent. I promise to compile these and present them to the Town Council for consideration. Please let me have your suggestions by email to the address at the top of this article by the end of February.

THE BEST TOOLS FOR THE JOB February is a good time for me to wrap up warm and venture out into shelter of the potting shed to get prepared for the season ahead. As a professional garden designer and plantswoman I rely heavily on my tools when I am preparing ground in client’s gardens or for when I’m tending & taming plants prior to planting.

Over the years I’ve tried and tested many spades, forks, secateurs & cultivators and I’m guilty of buying some which look lovely but just can’t withstand more than an occasional bit of light work! So I thought I’d share with you my favourite tools and tips for spending wisely.

Essential tools for the garden Spades and forks are the key tool for my job. They need to be hard wearing, light enough for use all day and easy to clean up and keep in good shape. I learnt several years ago that the beautiful looking wooden handled types you see in all of the garden centres are just not strong enough for regular soil preparation on our local heavy soils. I’ve broken more than I care to mention! So I now choose those with stronger handles, metal handles tend to be too heavy so I opt for plastic.

Stainless steel blades & tines are a must, the very cheapest spades and forks you’ll find in the garden centres have carbon steel blades which are strong but their surface isn’t as smooth as stainless steel so it is more difficult to slice into the ground and to clean the blade afterwards.

bulb planter I can neatly remove a core of soil at the right depth, drop the bulb into the hole and replace the soil on top. I have tried the small versions and I find they can break very easily so I have invested in strong stainless steel long handled types with haven’t failed on my so far!

I have the standard large spades for border preparation and I find border spades are really useful for planting as the blade size is smaller allowing me to dig small holes without disturbing neighbouring plants.

My Mattock is my favourite tool by far. It is similar to a pick axe but one of the points has a flattened end like a narrow spade.

It is essential for turning heavy ground, grubbing out shrub and tree roots and breaking up a compacted soil. As it is heavy like the pick axe, it easily slices through clay and roots more efficiently and with less effort digging than with a spade. I do feel like I’ve had a good workout when I’ve been using it though!

Secateurs are a must. I invested in a pair of Felco no.2 secateurs about 12 years ago, they are my favourite pair and still going strong. I keep them sharp with a small secateurs sharpening block and ensure that when I have finished using them they are dry before I store them so that they don’t rust. I have several other cheaper pairs which do a fine job as long as they are kept sharp, although they are a tad heavy or uncomfortable for regular use.

Bulb planters are a life saver in the autumn months when I am planting up client’s gardens with thousands of tulips, daffodils and crocus! With my long handled

2016 RESOLUTION TO BE STRONGER, BRAVER, PINKER WITH RACE FOR LIFE LOUGHBOROUGH

LOUGHBOROUGH women are being urged to get the New Year off to a great start by signing up now to Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life 2016.

Leicestershire. The new womenonly, non-competitive 5k obstacle course – with mud – received a whole-hearted welcome from the thousands of women who took part.

The charity is calling on women of all shapes and sizes to show cancer who’s boss by choosing their event - Race for Life 5k, or 10k – and committing to take part at Loughborough Town Centre or their event- Leicestershire Pretty Muddy at Prestwold Hall, Loughborough.

Thanks to their enthusiasm, this exciting event will be returning and organisers are urging women to secure their place as soon as possible.

Although many see January as the perfect opportunity to start a new chapter in terms of health and fitness, motivation can slip as the cold weather drags on.

That’s where Race for Life comes in. The 5k and 10k events take place on Sunday, July 10. So women who sign up now will be creating their own compelling goal to aim for later in the year, when the warmer weather makes staying on the sofa less tempting.

Amy Hall, Cancer Research UK’s Leicestershire Event Manager, said “Signing up to take part in Race for Life is a great way for women of all ages to commit to get a little more active. Race for Life events are non-competitive.

Taking part is not about being fit or fast and participants can choose to walk, jog, or run around the course. The atmosphere is incredibly supportive. Pledging to take part, alongside thousands of like minded women, can be a great incentive to get fitter.

Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring women-only series of 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy events which raise millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer sooner.

The Festival Players have recently announced their 2016 season of plays, and what a season it looks set to be! They start in February with the brilliant Michael Frayn’s back-to-front farce – ‘Noises Off’ about a dysfunctional touring company clearly destined never to make it to Leamington Spa. It’s less than twenty-four hours before opening night, Dotty’s lost her sardines, Selsdon’s drunk, Frederick’s about to have yet another nosebleed, and Tim’s on the brink of collapse. In the words of harassed Director Lloyd: ‘That’s farce. That’s the theatre. That’s life’.

Noises Off follows the cast and crew as they tour their cheeky farce ‘Nothing On’. Battling against all the odds they’re desperately trying to make sure that, whatever happens, the show must go on!

There’s a depth to the casting with Liz Berrisford playing ‘Dotty’, Nick Grainger as ‘Lloyd’ (the Director), Chris Nixon as the drunk ‘Selsdon’, Jarrod Makin and Rachel Ingham as the disorganised stage crew ‘Tim’ and ‘Poppy’. Kirt Hammonds, fresh from his success in ‘Abigail’s Party’, is playing the Inland Revenue stressed ‘Frederick’ alongside newcomers to the society Emma Bamford and Victoria Price playing ‘Belinda’ and ‘Brooke’. Tom Grainger plays the heart throb ‘Garry’ trying to woo ‘Brooke’. The play is directed by Norman Hockley who states, “I’ve been able to assemble a brilliant cast, and many of whom I’ve worked with before.

The combination of talented actors and classic comedy makes for the perfect start to the 2016 Festival Players’ season.”

The play is staged at Loughborough Town Hall from Wednesday 24thto Saturday 27th February 2016 at 7.30pm with a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm.

ANDREW BRIDGEN had dropped further since then. The builders wanted to remove the culvert and The Coal Authority and County Council officer agreed to this.

Every so many years, the Boundary Commission reviews County Council seats and adjusts boundaries to reflect changes in population, principally due to house building which has either taken place since the last review or is in the planning system. At the same time, the review aims to preserve or better reflect natural community boundaries. A review is currently under way in Leicestershire with some changes being proposed in the local area.

Improvements to drainage at the bottom of the site would be achieved by digging out a ditch along the edge of the site to join a culvert running under Measham Road. That culvert runs parallel with and then underneath the Ashby Canal. As a temporary measure, water was being pumped off site, under the supervision of the Environment Agency.

Whilst I was on site, the two places where there were known mine workings were dug up, revealing what appeared to be a manhole, lined with brick and holding water at a depth of about 5 metres. The other structure had a larger diameter of about a meter, also brick lined, but filled in. The Coal Authority advised the builders on appropriate procedures to make these two voids safe.

Briefly, these are as follows - the Forest and Measham electoral division loses Blackfordby village to Ashby, whilst keeping together Measham, Oakthorpe, Donisthorpe, Acresford and the Ashby Woulds district seat. To balance the numbers, Ashby loses Ashby Castle to Valley. In the rest of the area, Ravenstone moves into the Ibstock and Appleby division.

After the site visit, I accompanied a local resident in a helpful meeting with the builder, to address ongoing local concerns, particularly with regards the capability of the culvert under Measham Road to handle large volumes of water, which the builder explained would be controlled by a hydrobrake.

Final recommendations are due on 5th April after consultation responses have been evaluated.

Peveril Homes site, Measham Road, Moira

Discussions are ongoing following a subsequent meeting to look at the outfall from the culvert, at the edge of the woods near Moira Furnace, which is an important natural habitat.

I attended a site meeting recently at the building site on Measham Road, Moira. We were discussing how to make the site safe to start house building, whilst looking for the best way to protect the local environment.

Regular readers will know that for many years I have been campaigning for a fairer funding mechanism for our schools.

Leicestershire is second from bottom of the current funding formula league and despite our District having some of the most deprived areas in the county, our children receive almost £500 per pupil less than those in the city of Leicester, and a staggering £1,000 per year per pupil less than those in Birmingham, which is only 22 miles away.

I have also raised the issue of grooming via Social Media in Parliament given the tragic events of recent weeks. This is a very real issue and I have spoken to the Police locally who are already going into our schools to warn of the dangers that exist. It is a matter the Government takes very seriously and I have written to the Prime Minister who has the issue very high on his agenda, to see what further steps can be taken to protect our youngsters from online predators.

I recently presented a petition in the House of Commons signed by over 600 residents in North West Leicestershire, the highest number amongst colleagues who presented similar petitions, asking for a fair deal for areas such as ours and I would like to thank all the Schools who assisted me in collating these signatures.

Another issue I am working on it the restoration of the Ashby Canal. I met recently with members of the Ashby Canal Association who for many years have been doing an excellent job of working towards linking the Ashby Canal section that runs through this District to the main network. This restoration could have a very positive impact for this District, in developing our rapidly expanding tourist sector and together with the lifestyle benefits this and the National Forest provide.

Off the back of this and previous campaigning, the Government has recognised that our historic underfunding is an issue and the Education Secretary who is also a Leicestershire MP responded to me in Parliament stating that In 2015-16, the Government made an additional £20 million available to Leicestershire and the county will continue to receive that funding in 2016-17. In addition, the Government will be introducing a national funding formula to end the grossly unfair variations.

This is a big victory for our Schools and will ensure that our Children’s Education is no longer undervalued compared to neighbouring areas, and we will receive a much fairer deal.

There is still work to do on the general principle of fairer funding however. Figures show that urban councils receive around 45% more funding per resident than their rural counterparts. At the same time, rural residents pay on average £81 more in council tax.

I will be working with colleagues to address the imbalance and get a better deal for our district.

On another site visit, I met with an officer from County Highways, representatives from Measham Parish Council, the local Tenants’ and Residents’ Association and the District Council Housing Department. We discussed a number of suggestions to address concerns about traffic speeds on Widgeon Drive, arising from the petition I reported on Also, an old brick-lined water SHEPSHED COALVILLEin my last column.
