WELCOME TO YOUR COMMUNITY EYE MAGAZINE I can’t believe the summer term at school is over and the kids have broken up till September! Here’s hoping for some warm weather so I can get my boys out of the house. There is so much to do this summer with events at the Marlene Reid Centre, Sir John Moore Foundation, local museums and of course the Record Breaking reading scheme at your local library! Fingers crossed we can all get out into the garden and enjoy the fruits of our labour from earlier in the year. Bel still has some gardening hints and tips for us so it’s not a time to sit still for too long! I hope I see you out and about at some of the local events that are happening over the summer and fingers crossed for lots of good weather!

MULTI AWARD WINNING HERITAGE TRUST SEEKS VOLUNTEERS Swannington Heritage Trust has been spectacularly successfully in winning awards for its varied heritage projects. In April 2014 the Trust received three awards at the Leicestershire and Rutland Heritage Forum Awards including Heritage Group of the Year. At the June 2015 East Midlands Heritage Awards the Trust gained four shortlisting certificates and two awards. The Heart of the Community award was for working with numerous community organisations such as Swannington Art Classes, Swannington Women’s Institute, Whitwick and District U3A, Leicestershire Industrial History Society and schools. Trustee and Events Coordinator, Katrina Pentlow, said “our partnerships with the community are key elements in the development and sharing of Swannington’s varied heritage.” The judges commented “we were impressed by range of activities developed and the number of organisations and individuals engaged with the Trust. Local people were inspired to participate and there was a 27% increase in visitors.”
The Judges Special Award for Excellence reflected the Trust’s innovative work in Swannington plus their family activities and village involvement. Trust chairman, Roger Bisgrove, said “winning two regional awards is simply amazing, we were up against large professional organisations such as county museums and the National Trust. Our small group of volunteers do a fantastic job but we urgently need to recruit more mill guides, administrators, historical researchers, land management and events helpers. We hope that our successes will encourage local people to attend our volunteering event on the 11th July to find out how enjoyable volunteering can be.” Readers can find out more about visiting Swannington’s fantastic heritage by viewing the www.swannington-heritage. co.uk website, the Hough Mill Facebook page and twitter feed, emailing chairman@ swannington-heritage.co.uk or telephoning 01530 222 833. The Trust museum at Hough Mill is open 2-5pm on Sundays until the end of September. As part of the Festival of Archaeology the Trust is running bell pit simulations in which visitors can re-enact a day in the life of a family working a bell pit 800 years ago. These will take place near Hough Mill on Sunday 26th July at 2, 3 and 4pm.
The 2015 Festival will once again be held at the fantastic Moira Furnace, Moira and promises to be even better! Situated right in the Heart of the National Forest, this weekend festival is a great outing for all the family where you can step back in time and see: • steam engines • vintage tractors • historical motor vehicles • stationary engines • miniature steam • funfair and entertainments • trade and craft stalls and much, much more! Don't miss this year's children's entertainment including science experiments from Mad Science and the chance to get up close to some creepy crawlies at The Minibeast Roadshow! LOCAL NEWS
Our Dolly Shepherd display has recently been enhanced by excerpts from an audio recording ‘The Awesome Silence of the Infinite Skies’, a drama voiced by a local cast who worked on the project with a professional playwright and director (Martin Berry). Dolly was an Edwardian daredevil who parachuted from hot air balloons, worked in a Wild West sharpshooting act, undertook the first mid-air parachute rescue, drove munitions in France in WW1 and flew with the Red Devils in her nineties. The audio project was produced by Mantle Arts in conjunction with the Museum. Our summer programme of walks and talks is now underway with the next date Wednesday 19th August. Please register your interest by either telephoning 01530 560090 or calling in at the museum as these walks do fill up quickly. We are planning our temporary exhibitions for next year and ask that any organisation, or individual, who would wish to put on a display to get in touch with us.
The publication of the 17th edition of ‘Past and Present’ is now available to buy at the Museum. Featured articles include :- The Callis, Ashby Swimming Baths, the Kergrist family, the death by hanging of John Varnam of Coleorton, the rise and fall of the cinema at Ashby, WW2 harvest camps for girls, the Burton and Ashby Light Railway and a History of the Mammatt family part 2.
The Enderby U3A group visited the Museum at the beginning of July. After coffee, they were treated to a talk on the Civil War and Ashby. They were then given a guided history walk round the town, followed by a splendid buffet lunch before departing for the Castle. The chairman wrote ‘We had a super day and all of the volunteers at the Museum looked after us really well. We thought the Civil war talk was excellent’. We are able to provide such sessions for groups of up to 21 people and offer, not only the Civil War, but Ashby, the Spa Town and Scandal and Murder. If you are interested please contact the Museum on 01530560090.
Friends of Ashby de la Zouch Museum The Friends of Ashby Museum were disappointed that the Talk on Hathern Brewery had to be cancelled due to lack of support, but hope to rearrange it for the Autumn. We are also planning some future events, look out for more details here and on the museum website.

OPPORTUNITIES AT THE FURNACE FOR VOLUNTEERS ROTARY CLUB PRESENTS MONIES TO LOCAL CAUSES The Rotary Club of Ashby de la Zouch Castle have been able to present cheques to benefit three local causes at their latest breakfast meeting on the 16th June. This has been made possible by the generosity of local people in supporting the clubs recent events and through their general fundraising throughout the year. First to benefit was Ashby Ivanhoe Football Club as Chairman Stuart Bonser attended to accept a cheque for £200. The club, based on Lower Packington Road, have been encouraging and supporting children to get in to sport since their formation in 1948. The club was originally set up in collaboration with Ashby Ivanhoe School with three teams but has now grown to support seventeen teams with ages ranging from under 7’s through to adults. Secondly, local charity the Measham Mobility Bus was presented with a cheque for £310 to go towards their current fundraising as they look to
The Ian Clews writing competition winners were awarded their prize money and certificates by Patricia Clews on Monday June 29th. Two of the winners, Lucy Ryan and Lucas Pinfold were from Congerstone Primary School while the third, Sam Armstrong, was from Griffydam Primary School. We very much enjoyed reading the children’s stories of jousting and chivalry, inspired by a passage from Sir Walter Scott’s ‘Ivanhoe’.
purchase a brand new minibus. The funds for this were raised at a recent charity quiz night that the Rotary Club held in Ashby. The Mobility Bus provides a vital service in the local community, providing community transport to those who are in need through age, illness or disability. Finally to benefit from some financial support was local Ashby children’s tennis star, Talia NeilsonGatenby. Her father Richard attended the Rotary Clubs meeting and was presented with a cheque for £200 to support Talia in her training and for the purchase of training equipment. Talia is the current UK under 9’s number 1 tennis player and represents Ashby and the country in tournaments at home and abroad. Sean Sadler, President of Ashby Castle Rotary Club said “It is always a pleasure to be able to support local organizations and individuals and to be able to present three cheques in one morning way very special”. Interested in finding out more about Rotary? If you would like to come along to the Rotary Club of Ashby de la Zouch Castle please contact our secretary Chris Knight at cjcjknight@supanet.com or visit www.ribi.org
Following the successful Heritage Lottery Fund bid, Moira Furnace Museum Trust now has a new Volunteer Co-ordinator in place, Llynda Baugh. Llynda has lots of experience of working with volunteers on heritage, environmental and art projects and has now put together a host of volunteering opportunities that will also enhance the venue and the visitor experience. Llynda says ‘it is such a privilege to be working at this lovely site that has so much potential for involvement for those who have an interest in its story. We have put together a list of things we would like to achieve which will not only enhance the site but also allow people the opportunity to get involved, have fun, learn new skills, meet new people and feel a sense of achievement, all fuelled by tea, cake and lots of motivation. Whilst we have a list, I really want to hear suggestions from local people about other ideas they might have that could be incorporated. I understand that we are all very busy, but just giving a few hours a week or a month can make so much difference to what is already a site of historic importance’. With a lovely building that was used both for industrial and domestic purposes, a canal,

woodland and acres of parkland, there is so much to be involved in. The creation of a heritage garden, a WW1 kitchen, a woodland trail, temporary exhibitions and an extension of our guided tours both in the museum and on the boat are just some of the volunteering opportunities on offer. In addition, we are looking for gallery assistants that can help set up for the day, welcome visitors, work in the shop and encourage families to use the new children’s area. Our summer opening hours will start in the middle of July through to the end of September and we would really appreciate any help you can give with this. For those who can’t make a regular commitment, we have one off tasks such as wood clearing, strimming and DIY that can be undertaken at any time or maybe you could help out at our own one day or weekend events. We look forward to hearing from you about how we can work together to maintain and enhance this lovely site. We will provide training, courses and lots of support to all of our volunteers. Please get in touch with Llynda on 01283 224667, moirafurnace@ gmail.com or call/text her direct on 07841 480691 or just find her at the Furnace on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between 10am and 4pm. She will be delighted to hear from you. Volunteering packs are also available from the Museum shop during opening times.

COALVILLE ADULT SCHOOL DRAMA GROUP PRESENTS...
RISING STAR TO GRACE MEMORIAL HALL STAGE Up-and-coming folk singer Kirsty Bromley releases her debut album next month… and her Autumn tour will bring her to Packington! Sheffield-based Kirsty, who draws upon a wide range of traditional music, has a disarmingly transparent voice, but also the uncanny and beautiful knack of drawing attention to the song rather than the messenger. Her debut album, “Time Ashore”, which features original songs as well as carefully-curated folk gems, has already received great attention on the UK folk scene. Memorial Hall Chairman Chris Miles told Packington Post “I saw Kirsty at an event near Bristol a few months ago, and her voice knocked the whole audience sideways. So when the opportunity to have her do a concert here in Packington came up, it was just too good to miss!” Kirsty will be joined on stage by guitarist Nick Hooper and accordionist Simon Dunpleton for the gig, while the evening’s entertainment will kick off with a short set from Ant Miles and Anita Dobson, one-half of Bristol-based folk foursome Road Not Taken. It’s a special gig for Ant, too, as he grew up in the village. All profits from the event will be donated to The Alzheimer’s Society. Tickets for the event, which takes place on Friday 25th September, are priced at £10 in advance, £12 on the door, and are available from Daybreak Services, Ashby Tourist Information Centre, Sweet Memory Lane in Ashby Measham Post Office, from Chris Miles on (01530) 414378 or online from www.fancourtmusic.co.uk

PLEASE SAY NO.... As householders in Wood Street and Nottingham Road, we received (at the beginning of June) yet another notification of a Planning Application for development of the Money Hill site. What shocked us was that the proposed access would be achieved by demolishing two semi-detached houses – 3 and 5 Nottingham Road. A group of residents felt that people in Ashby should know what was being proposed and we leafleted 2,000 homes and businesses, hoping that word of mouth would carry the message further. It did! Our major concerns are: • unsustainability of the town infrastructure • unsuitability of the proposed access, particularly in view of the proximity to a large school • increased traffic flow on an already busy road with daily tailbacks, congestion and a history of accidents • potential risk to the large numbers of pedestrians, both adults and children, who use the pavements of Nottingham Road and Wood Street, many going to and from schools in town. We have been amazed and delighted by the support we have received. Folks in Ashby know how bad the traffic situation
is and that it is necessary to factor in queueing time if using Nottingham Road. Traffic congestion is now one of the main topics of conversation in town, whether in hairdressers, pubs or waiting to be served in shops. On Monday 6th July, members of the Ashby Town Council Planning Committee were applauded when they agreed unanimously that the proposed access is unsuitable and unacceptable. The Planning Application will be discussed by NWLDC Planning Committee in the near future. It is not too late to write to Mr James Knightley, quoting Ref: 15/00512/OUTM, voicing your concerns and objections: Planning and Development, NWLDC, Whitwick Road, Coalville, LE67 3FJ Email: development.control@ nwleicestershire.gov.uk Tel: 01530 454675 Our on-line petition is: www.change.org/p/north-westleicestershire-district-council-sayno-to-planning-application-ref-1500512-outm We can be contacted in the following ways: Lorna - lornatitley1@hotmail.com Chris - cingamells@gmail.com Facebook - facebook.com/pages/ Say-No-to-Planning-ApplicationRef1500512outm
ASHBY CIVIC SOCIETY VISIT TO MIDDLETON HALL Ashby Civic Society members were fascinated to experience the result of hard work by local volunteers when they visited Middleton Hall. This little known 13th century building had been improved and extended over different periods then sadly neglected. Fortunately it is now well on the way to complete restoration. Our guides talked us through the wealthy families that had once occupied the house and beautiful gardens. Tea rooms and querky shops ended this successful event in true Civic Society style. Well worth a visit.
“Who Dies Wins” A Comedy Thriller by Seymour Matthews Wednesday 2nd to Saturday 5th September The Adult School Hall, Bridge Road, Coalville, LE67 3PW Tickets £8, Concessions £6 (Wed. & Thurs.) from The Hermitage FM Coffee Lounge, Memorial Square, Coalville Tel: 01530 460992 The Ashby-de-la-Zouch Tourist Information Office, North Street Tel: 01530 411767 Leon Winter always spices up his dinner parties with a practical joke or two, so when the electricity cuts out and a mysterious voice booms from the darkness the guests on this particular night do not think the worst. Then shots ring out and the joke turns into a nightmare. The eccentric Chief Inspector Plum investigates a case that involves hidden identities, marital deception and twisted quotations from Shakespeare. And in a brilliant coup de'theatre, the audience gets a major clue to the solution well before anyone else. Funny, intriguing and exciting, 'WHO DIES WINS' is a comedythriller that delivers on all fronts! The Drama Group meet Tuesday and Friday nights at The Adult School on Bridge Road, Coalville at 7.30 pm. Anyone interested in any aspects of amateur theatre is most welcome to come down and see what we get up to!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Martyn Kemp feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double
glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up
when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Ashby and the surrounding area and Martyn is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction
that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Martyn a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Fabrics To Bring Out Your Inner Artist
In past years digitally printed fabrics were quite a niche market and not so widely available. With this process you can print an image direct onto the fabric to create a colourful and unique design. These days the choice is endless and one of my current favourites is a collection of fabrics from Prestigious Textiles call Iona. Available in 7 designs, and mainly printed onto soft chenille which is suitable for all kinds of soft furnishings, it also includes two fabrics specifically designed for upholstery.
An artists palette of colour is used in soft brushstrokes to recreate bold, bright blooms and subtle washed out petals and leaves, alongside weaves with strong accent colours which are perfect for accessories such as throws and cushions. To view this range and many other fabrics for all your soft furnishing needs, please contact Acacia Curtains & Blinds on 01509 821016 Or visit us at Robert Newbolds Flooring, Market Place, Shepshed.

Choosing Climbers
S
ummer is well under way and we’ve been lucky to have some lovely sunny warm days to enjoy in the garden. At this time of year it’s great to sit back and relax, enjoying the fruits of the hard labour and soaking up the colour and fragrance of the surrounding plants. What’s better than a sit beneath a climber clad pergola or against a warm wall smothered in fragrant blooms?
Climbing Rose
There are all sorts of climbers available in our local garden centres and nurseries. Which to choose to cover a pergola, fence, arch or an obelisk can be a tricky when you’re faced with so many.
Colourful Climbers
Star Jasmine
Clematis are rightly popular, they come in such a huge range of colours and there’s one for every site and every season. The brightest and most bold are the summer flowering hybrids like ‘The President’ & ‘Hagley Hybrid’. They flower prolifically on long shoots from May to September depending on the variety. These love sunny spots but the alpine and macropetala types will cope with shady spots too. Clematis climb by wrapping their leaf stems around supports, so wires stretched over a surface will give them the means to spread.
For Fragrance
The much loved Honeysuckle (aka Lonicera) is the most iconic of fragrant climbers. The scent can knock your socks off on a
warm sunny day! Varieties like ‘Graham Thomas’ and ‘Halliana’ have lovely yellow blooms where as ‘Serotina’ or ‘Belgica’ have a pink blush. Honeysuckle twines so it needs something for support – preferably trellis or batons as wire itself can just cut into the stems causing problems later. Roses are a classic with blousy blooms with richly scent from spring to late summer. ‘Climbing roses’ are well behaved for smaller spaces and ‘Ramblers’ are best suited to large spaces where they can extend their long stems up, over and along.
Evergreens
If you’ve an unsightly building to cover or screen then evergreens are of most use as they will give all year round interest. A popular choice in this situation is Ivy (aka Hedera), left to its own devices it can become unruly and damage the surface it sticks to but if it is trimmed and contained it can give great colour in green, gold to silver shades along with berries once mature. If you’d like some flowers too try Clematis armandii which has scented blooms in spring and is clothed in glossy green leaves all year.
Self-clinging Types
Self-clinging climbers are really useful for areas which have tricky access. Ivy is the best known type but Virginia creeper (aka Parthenocissus) and the gorgeous Star Jasmine (aka
Trachelospermum jasminoides) have adventitious roots too, which develop along the stems and stick themselves to the surface. The former has wonderfully colourful foliage in autumn and the later is clothed in the most heady fragrant blooms through summer. Keep these contained to ensure they don’t cause damage to gutters, wood work and brick work on older buildings.
Annual Climbers
For temporary screening or to clothe arches and obelisks it’s worth trying annual climbers like Sweet Peas, Morning Glory (Ipomea) and Black Eyed Susan (Thunbergia). Buy seeds for these from the garden centre and sow inside in the spring, then plant out after the frosts have gone and they will grow rapidly and flower throughout the summer months. If you are looking for some garden inspiration, next month I’ll be reviewing some of my latest projects creating, designing and developing gardens from English country to contemporary spaces. If you’re looking for design or planting advice, I offer a tailor made service from consultations & planting plans to full garden rejuvenation projects. Give me a call to discuss your requirements or check out my website for more details.

The history of Leicestershires woodlands
T
here is nothing nicer than a trip to a woodland in the summer to sit under dappled light and breathe in the fresh air.
We are lucky that we live in the National Forest and a significant amount of planting has been undertaken (8m trees by Oct 2012). However our local area has always been a low wooded area and the Victoria County History Trust has published some interesting information on the history of woodland in our county. Leicestershire in 1086 was one of the least wooded counties in England. Converting from the length and breadth of woodland quoted in Domesday Book to hectares or acres is not an exact science, as few woods may have been rectangular, but other than ‘Hereswode’ which contained approximately 1,630 hectares (4,030 acres), only two manors, Groby and Thurcaston, may have had more than 400 hectares (1,000 acres) of wood. Most of the woodland was concentrated
in two broad sweeps of countryside to the west and the south-east of the county, but what is most striking when the distribution of woodland is plotted, is the number of places in Leicestershire that had no woodland at all. That may have been the case since the 5th or 6th centuries: place-names containing the elements bearu (wood), graf (small wood), leah (clearing in woodland), lundr (wood) sceaga (small wood), wald (high woodland) and wudu (wood) are also relatively uncommon and concentrated in these two areas. Some parish boundaries and ancient tracks suggest that wood-pasture was only available at some distance from a settlement. There are several parallel tracks to the north of Leicester which appear to link meadow land along the Soar valley to higher grazing in the east
Leicestershire wolds, a few parishes have detached portions and to the south of the present city the boundaries of parishes including Narborough and Enderby were drawn to include long tongues which extended into what was once Leicester Forest. RIGHTS TO TAKE WOOD AND TO HUNT! Estover was the right of a tenant to take wood, perhaps from some miles away, to repair his house or plough, and for fences and firewood. Wood was a valuable commodity and conflict often arose, for example from false claims that a tenancy gave that right, or when people took more than their entitlement in order to sell the wood at a profit. Lords might also try to rescind an earlier agreement to preserve the wood for their own use. In 1287 John le Fauconer claimed that for 6 years he had been prevented from taking his estovers ‘for burning, enclosing and building’ from John Comyn’s wood in Shepshed, a right which Fauconer claimed was attached to his tenancy in Thurcaston, over 10 miles away.
A case heard before the royal courts in 1240 concerned estover within a wood named ‘del Chalenge’ in the centre of Charnwood, but also set out the hunting rights within this land. In an agreement which almost foreshadows today’s Hunting Act, permission was given for the foresters of the earl of Arundel ‘to carry bows everywhere in the said woods, and arrows genderez and darts and shafts without the arrow being barbed’, and for the earl to hunt there, so long as his party took into the wood no more than ‘nine bows … and six hounds only for taking wounded deer, and without a pack of dogs and harriers’. For more information about the history of Leicestershire including some interesting research guides to help you discover more about your local area, please visit the Victoria County History Trust website at: www.leicestershirehistory. co.uk or contact them at Leicestershire VCH, 5 Salisbury Road, Leicester, LE1 7QR

K
ingfishers’ Pool Vineyard has won two medals in the prestigious United Kingdom Vineyards Association (UKVA) competition, which is the only national competition for English and Welsh wine. The still dry white wine made from Siegerrebe and Solaris grapes, called King Richard, won a silver medal. This wine is made in the boutique winery at the vineyard in Rothley. The pink sparkling wine, Spirit of Freedom, made from Orion, Siegerrebe, Regent and Pinot precose grapes, won a bronze medal. This was made from the Rothley grapes, which
were sent to Halfpenny Green Vineyard in Staffordshire who have considerable experience in the complex process of making sparkling wine by the traditional method (methodè champenoise) using disgorgement which takes two years. Vineyard proprietor, Liz Robson, said “This is the first time I had entered a wine completely grown, produced and bottled by myself into a national competition, and when I saw the results and the words “silver medal” I had to read the text several times before I could believe it. Spirit of Freedom had already attained commended in the International Wine Competition so the bronze was

with his university friend Thomas Babington and drafted the act of parliament to abolish the slave trade there. There is a history section on the vineyard website www.rothleywine.com which explains further.
Liz retired last July from her full time position as principal lecturer in midwifery at De Montfort University to devote more time to the vineyard, which started as a hobby in 2008. She is enthusiastic about local history which is apparent in the names of the wines. King Richard is probably obvious. Spirit of Freedom is named for William Wilberforce who stayed frequently at Rothley Temple (now Rothley Court Hotel)
The vineyard is small, but determined to succeed in producing fine quality wines with a distinctive Leicestershire identity. The vineyard’s four wines are sold under its company name of Rothley Wine Ltd and can be purchased from a number of local retailers, wine bars and at Ragdale Hall. At the moment the vineyard is not open to the public, but this may change next year once a toilet has been built.
The Wars of the Roses were a series of battles fought in medieval England from 1455 to 1485 between the House of Lancaster and the House of York. The name Wars of the Roses is based on the badges used by the two sides, the red rose for the Lancastrians and the white rose for the Yorkists. The wars ended when Richard III, the last Yorkist king, was defeated at the battle of Bosworth in 1485 by Henry Tudor founder of the house of Tudor. After the battle Richard’s corpse was taken to Leicester and buried without pomp. His original tomb is believed to have been destroyed during the Reformation, and his remains were lost for more than five centuries. In 2012, an archaeological excavation was conducted on a city council car park on the site once occupied by Greyfriars Priory Church where his remains were found. Kingfishers’ Pool Vineyard have marked these historical events by launching their Wars of the Roses Wine. Their King Richard wine is a full bodied white and has recently won a silver medal at the UKVA wine competition. Accompanying this white wine is a medium dry rose wine named Battle Royal. What a wonderfully symbolic way of commemorating this historic event.

Ashby Canal making progress
AB Produce planning application
The restoration of the Ashby Canal continues to make progress. This summer at the Snarestone end, canal bridge 62 is being reconstructed, largely using historic jumbo bricks. 2,000 of these bricks were recycled from Measham Fields Farm when it was demolished to make way for an extension to Minorca Surface Mine. Meanwhile, discussions continue between a local developer and the County Council about the canal basin at Measham.
An application for an anerobic digester (AD) plant at AB Produce in Measham is expected to come to July’s meeting of the County Council’s Development Control and Regulatory Board. This long awaited proposal is being put forward as the answer to the ongoing odour problem from the factory, which processes vegetables, mainly potatoes.
The Ashby Canal Forum is shortly to have its annual meeting, bringing together representatives of various local groups and canal enthusiasts to discuss the next steps for the canal. I expect the main topic of discussion will be how to approach the considerable task of raising the £10 - £15 million needed to bring the canal into Measham and to that end, how to make best use of what’s left (about £300,000) out of £1.25 million paid out for canal restoration by the owners of the Minorca site in connection with the original planning permission. Bringing the canal back into Measham has long been the dream of many, who see it as the key to a more prosperous future for the village. As Chair of the Forum for the last two years, I have been impressed with the passion and commitment expressed at the meetings and the determination from everyone to see the canal restoration through to completion. Now, with the wind a little more at our backs, I think we can take bigger strides forward and I will be encouraging all interested parties to think about the best way to work together to keep the momentum going.

I shall be attending the meeting to try to make sure all due regard has been given to the safety and effectiveness of the proposed new plant. Although there was noticeable improvement when the lagoons were cleaned out last year, complaints to the Environment Agency about the smell are mounting up again, and clearly something has to be done. If you catch the smell, call the environment incident hotline on 0800 80 70 60 (24 hour service) tell them how it’s affecting you and take a note of the incident reference number.
Call for action on buses Ashby Woulds Town Council have submitted a petition bearing over 500 signatures, calling on the County Council to address the impact of the loss of an important bus service in Moira. I shall be supporting the petition at the next Highways Forum in July, along with the petition about traffic speeds on Measham Road, Oakthorpe which has also now been submitted. Thank you to everyone who signed the petitions and a really big thank you to all those who helped collecting signatures. Let’s hope we can make a difference.
I
t has been a busy first month back in Parliament with a packed Queen’s Speech laying out the legislation for the next year. A key part of this plan is delivering on our promise to hold an in/ out referendum for which the preliminary legislation is already going through Parliament. I am clear that this needs to be a full and fair referendum and I will be working to ensure this is the case as various stages go through Parliament before a Referendum is held by the end of 2017 at the latest. It will then be up to you to decide whether or not we remain in the European Union. However there is a lot more than just the EU Referendum which the Government will be working on over the coming year. It is essential that we maintain our economic recovery and the Government has provided stability for this by pledging not to increase the rates of Income Tax, VAT or National Insurance. Our long term economic plan is continues to deliver for our Country with unemployment down again last month and average earnings now increasing much faster than the rate of inflation. Locally we have seen a remarkable fall in unemployment and in North West Leicestershire we have one of the highest economic growth rates in the UK, However we now need to see this translated into an improved infrastructure offering for our District. Specifically we need to build on the improvements already being seen in Coalville. The eyesore that was the Pick and Shovel is finally being developed and the site formerly owned by Tesco on Hotel Street is now under development additionally the District Council is undertaking a scheme to improve the shop fronts in the town. I believe now we have taken these first steps, we will start to see a number of improvements to Coalville, and residents will see the regeneration of the town being delivered.
GOT AN ARTICLE TO SEND US? We are always on the lookout for local news. Please send articles to: communityeye@ openboxpromotions.co.uk
I was also pleased to see that the good work of the Conservative group on the Ashby Town Council was recognised at the recent election. Ashby is widely recognised as a thriving town with a wide range of community events and recently was declared in the national media as the eight most desirable Market Town in the UK to live in, much of the credit for this deserves to go to the Town Council who continue to deliver for the town. In Parliament I am continuing to campaign on a range of issues, one of which is the corruption with FIFA which is at last being uncovered. The disrepute of this organisation is in sharp contrast to the excellent work happening at grassroots level sports in the district. The North West Leicestershire School Sports Partnership under Director Stuart Johnson is providing an excellent and comprehensive service which has seen 30 of our schools achieve a Sainsbury’s School Games Mark with over 2,500 participants. In addition there have been Health Roadshows delivered in 33 primary schools to 1,503 children. The importance of grassroots sport at an early age cannot be underestimated. It encourages teamwork and will hopefully lead to a healthy lifestyle in the future. In North West Leicestershire we have many clubs and activities across the whole sporting spectrum and I know from attending that they have some great youth programmes and I would urge all parents and youngsters to get involved in sport as it is a hugely rewarding experience. The next few weeks in Parliament will be busy with the emergency budget amongst other things. I will also be attending a number of events within the constituency and look forward to seeing a number of you at them.
