ASHFIELD PRESENTS LASER CHEQUE AT IBSTOCK A giant cheque for £8,500 has been presented to students at Ibstock Community College by representatives from Ashbybased firm Ashfield Healthcare.

The cash will help to pay for a new laser cutter for the college’s design department.

Four students who pitched to Ashfield’s Worthy Causes board gave their presentation for a second time, to their fellow students in assembly. Members of the board were so impressed

by Lawrence Standen, Reagan Smith, both aged 13, Katherine Bowman and Haidee Dodd, aged 12, that they offered to put £8,500 towards the £10,000 cutter. The college had already

raised £1,500 by holding its own fundraising events.

The visitors were then given a tour of the college’s design and technology department.

Amy Robinson, business centre manager at Ashfield and a member of the Worthy Causes committee, is a former student of Ibstock College.

Rebecca Shipley, sales support executive at Ashfield and a member of the Worthy Causes

committee, said “The Worthy Causes fund is a great thing to be involved with and it is really exciting to be able to help students at Ibstock Community College.”

The laser cutter will be used for a wide range of design and engineering projects. Students will design their products using Computer Aided Design before pressing a button to activate the cutter, which will immediately cut out the pieces for their 3D designs.

ASHBY STUDENT GETS MASTERCLASS AT BEST RESTAURANT IN THE WORLD A food technology student from Ashby School has been given a cookery masterclass at the best restaurant in the world.

Oriol Liberia, who is studying GCSE Food Technology, was invited to look around El Celler de Can Roca in Spain, where his dad supplies the wine.

During his visit, Oriol was shown the kitchen and coached on some of the restaurant’s dishes and practices.

The contemporary Catalan restaurant, which is run by the three Roca brothers, was voted number one in a list of The World’s Best Restaurants earlier this month, beating the likes of Heston Blumenthal.

Its standard dish is listed as mackerel with pickles and mullet roe. The restaurant was also praised for its ‘outstanding wine’ which comes from Oriol’s dad’s vineyard.

Sarah Middleton, Head of Food Technology at Ashby School, said “We always recommend that students get as much hands-on experience as they can but we don’t usually expect them to visit the world’s best restaurant. It was an amazing privilege and an unforgettable experience for Oriol.”

Oriol is a boarder at Schoolhouse, Ashby School’s boarding facility which is home to 75 boys from around the world.

HALF CENTURY AT NEWLANDS FETE FOR LOCAL ROTARIAN Saturday 6th June was a very special day for the regular compere at Newlands House Fete in Netherseal as it marked his 50th consecutive fete supporting Newlands House which was formally the Staunton Harold Cheshire Home.

Chris Knight, now Secretary of Ashby Castle Rotary Club who organise the annual fete, first attended Staunton Harold at the age of 10 with his Aunt and Uncle assisting in selling balloons for 4d each and this continued for the next 4 years, before progressing to helping on the pop and crisp stall in the days when all the drinks were supplied by Osbournes Drinks from Swadlincote. He remembers that these were sold for 1/- with a 3d deposit on the bottle and only when the bottle was returned the deposit was given back, in those days that was enough to buy a packet of crisps.

The fete at Staunton Harold started at 1000hrs and ended at 2200hrs with either a firework display or the Melton Mowbray Toy Soldiers illuminated Band.

Over the years Chris has met some very interesting people who have opened the fete, including Ted Moult, Johnny Briggs, Mick McManus and an unforgettable opening was with Molly Baden and the Chimps from Twycross Zoo! Chris never lost interest in helping people less fortunate than himself and went on to be part of the fete committee, eventually chairing it in the last year prior to the home moving to Netherseal and then for the first few years when the fete was held at St Peter’s Sports and Social Club.

He then went on to be part of the management committee at Newlands which he chaired for 4 years from 1989-1993.

In 1995 the Rotary Club of Ashby Castle took over the organisation of the fete and for the last 20 years Chris has compered the event, usually wearing some outrageous costumes in the process! It is a day he enjoys and also with it being held in the grounds at Newlands, one that enables the residents to be part of the day.

Saturday was always going to be special for Chris, being his 50th consecutive fete and as a mark of appreciation for all that he has done for the home over the years, was asked to officially open the fete and during the course of proceedings was presented with a watch by the home.

Chris said “It has been an amazing time being involved with Leonard Cheshire Disability and bringing pleasure to the residents so they have a better quality of life” When asked what his most memorable moment of being involved with Leonard Cheshire his reply was “Being presented to the Queen in 1995 for my work with the organisation after 30 years service” The day was a huge success in the glorious sunshine with large numbers of people returning to make this one of the most successful fetes yet. At the time of going to press, final monies are still being collected but it looks like several thousands of pounds have been raised again for the residents of the home to improve their quality of life and provide them with trips, entertainment and social events throughout the year.

THE BEREAVEMENT HELP POINT: ASHBY DE LA ZOUCH

For anyone who is experiencing or has experienced bereavement, through any circumstance, a new support group is on hand to provide advice and emotional support.

One of four Help Points developed

by St Giles Hospice within the charity’s catchment area, with a further three planned for later in the year. The Ashby Bereavement Help Point is jointly funded by North West Leicestershire charity, Hospice Hope.

We have recently welcomed several new volunteers to ensure that we are able to remain open six days a week throughout the year. If you can spare just two hours every other week to help us to maintain this commitment then please get in touch with the museum on 01530 560090.

New additions have been made to our collection of Reminiscence Boxes, which are sent out regularly to local care homes and church groups. They really are enjoyed by all who borrow a box and we get great positive feedback. If you would like to borrow one please contact Pat or Patricia on the above telephone number.

Nearly 350 school students visited Ashby Museum in the fortnight before half-term to learn about the town’s important role in the English Civil War of the 17th Century.

Littleover Community School in Derby brought 284 students over three days – and the Year Eight groups, aged 12 and 13, combined an illustrated talk at the museum with a trip to the castle as part of their history coursework.

Fifty-eight youngsters from Woodcote Primary School in Ashby , split into morning and afternoon groups, also stepped back in time to the Civil War and accompanied their talk by having a great time trying on period costumes and armour.

Young pupils from another Derby School, Meadow Farm Primary in Chaddesden, visited the museum earlier in the term to discover more about World War II – concentrating on aspects such as the evacuation of children, food rationing, the work of the Land Girls and air-raidprecaution procedures.

Details of this year’s Ian Clews Writing Competition have been sent out to local primary schools, encouraging year 5 and 6 pupils in their creativity using a passage from Sir Walter Scott’s ‘Ivanhoe’ as inspiration. We eagerly await entries from budding authors.

As part of the Festival of Archaeology the Kids’ Club will host an event called ‘Hands on Archaeology’. Discover the past with artefacts from the prehistoric to the modern day. There will be opportunities to excavate your own finds and make your own timelines! Free to all children of primary school age. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

This next club will be on Sat 18th July from 11am-4pm.

Following the exhibition on Ashby’s Railways, the next one in the Loudoun Gallery will be called ASHBY - HISTORY THOUGH ARTEFACTS and will run from Friday June 27th – Friday 31st July. Open 11am to 4pm weekdays (closed 1 -2pm). 11am to 2pm on Saturday.

This will featuring the archaeology of Ashby de la Zouch and the surrounding area. Come and see the many and varied things found in the Ashby area dating from prehistory until today. Audio Guides to the museum are available in English, German and French.

Friends of Ashby de la Zouch Museum The Friends of Ashby Museum have had another successful year and been able to help the museum with several projects including the restoration of the Coronation robes. Can I remind members that the year ends on 31st July, so we will be sending out renewal notices soon. We hope you will be willing to rejoin. New members are always welcome. 'PRIDE IN OUR BATH GROUNDS‘ The Friends of Ashby Bath Grounds have formed a new working party this year to launch the ' Pride In Our Bath Grounds‘ campaign.

The Friends of Ashby Bath Grounds vision for the Bath Grounds is…

• To ensure that the highest standards of health, safety and enjoyment are achieved.

• To maintain the relaxed countryside in the town feel; • To thank the majority of people who show respect for it • To encourage everyone to do the same.

A ghost, a Priory and sinful tales. Ashby Civic Society were enthralled to hear of historic events at Grace Deiu Priory on the short walk of the estate. Our local enthusiastic guide produced unique pictures and maps and some of our members even recalled their own stories bringing it even more to life. A lovely summer afternoon walk enjoyed by all. Next month we visit the amazing Middleton Hall with its fascinating history and variety of architecture. Why not come as a visitor? We really would look forward to seeing you and you’re

ASHBY YFC HOST FIRST CLAY SHOOT FOR CHARITY

As well as the shoot there was also a BBQ and raffle. In total the event raised £474.24 which will be donated to LOROS, a local charity which provides care for terminally ill patients across Leicestershire.

Laura Green, secretary of Ashby Young Farmers said “On behalf of the whole club I would like to thank everyone who attended the shoot and helped us to raise as much money as possible for this fantastic charity. Similarly we would like to say thank you to the Hewitt family for letting us use their land, Melbourne Gun Shop who supplied the traps & clays and to all those who donated raffle prizes. We have had lots of fantastic feedback about the event and we are hoping that we can make this into an annual event.”

On Sunday 7th June, Ashby-dela-Zouch Young Farmers Club (Ashby YFC) held their first clay pigeon shoot to raise money for our club charity, LOROS. The event attracted over 40 local clay pigeon shooters and raised over £470 for the charity.

The event which was held at Western Old Parks Farm in Ashbyde-la-Zouch by kind permission of the Hewitt Family attracted over 40 competitors, including members of other local young farmers clubs. The event consisted of a 50 bird sporting shoot (50 clays across 7 different stands) and a 10 bird pool shoot (5 pairs of clays on 1 stand).

The winner of the 50 bird shoot was Mr D Heath who hit all 50 clays, followed closely by Mr M Small with 47/50 and Mr R Brooker with 43/50. The Young Farmers prize went to Charnwood Young Farmers Club member Connor Wilkins.

Creating A ‘Tropical’ Garden

W

ell summer is here and thankfully we can wave good bye to the cold mornings we have suffered in the spring and say hello to long sunny days. Things seem a little late this year but with some good sunshine they will soon catch up.

Bamboo

As I spend more time out basking in the rays my mind turns to holidays in warmer more exotic climes. It can be so tempting to return to our cooler gardens and long for the plants and colours we have seen abroad. Despite our less clement weather it is possible to create a tropical look using hardy and half hardy plants with the odd flamboyant annual thrown in too.

Select from a range of lush foliage plants and tropical looking flowers to transform a space into a bright, fresh & invigorating space.

Phormium

Tropical foliage Bamboo – a classic for an exotic garden, the foliage looks and sounds great when caught by the breeze. Choose varieties that are well behaved and true clump formers like Fargesia robusta. They can be grown in large containers if they are kept moist.

Bananas – hardy varieties (through most winters) include Musa basjoo with huge paddle shaped green leaves on long sturdy stems and Musa sikkimensis which has bronze markings on the young leaves and trunk. Both will reach approx. Height of 3-4m (10-13ft)

Fatsia – with huge evergreen glossy palm like leaves this is a popular shrub. It can get quite large and benefits from being in a sheltered spot to avoid frost damage to leaves in spring.

Phormium & Cordylines – strong statement plants both of these produce strappy evergreen leaves in a variety of colours. They are suitable for pots or borders and heights vary with variety. Note that only the green form of Cordyline is truly hardy, the red and striped forms need some winter protection.

Happy in sun or shade and all manner of soils, these are very adaptable plants.

Gingers - Hedychium coccineum the Scarlet Gingerlily, is a robust tall-growing hardy Ginger from the Himalayas. It produces startlingly beautiful flowers in late summer.

These prefer a warm sheltered spot and all the water and feed that you can give them.

Palms – hardy forms like Trachycarpus fortunei can be an expensive investment but as they are such great statement plants you only need one to transport you to the tropics!

Begonias – popular bedding plants for hanging baskets and containers they can also look fantastic in containers in an exotic style garden. Group them with grasses and ferns in containers for a lush look. Begonia rex are grown for their striking foliage and are perfect for shady spots.

Exotic looking flowers Dahlias Well with such a huge range of colours and forms and great exoticlooking foliage these are a must for a tropical style garden. Try cactus types for their zany pointed petals.

Reds, oranges and yellows with dark foliage will give a wow factor.

Climbers – Passion flowers like Passiflora caerulea or ‘Constant Elliot’ are hardy in this area and produce exotic-looking blooms in blue/white. Campsis bear exotic clusters of pale yellow-orange trumpet-shaped flowers perfect for warm pergola or wall.

Hemerocallis – the Day lily come in a huge range of colours and heights. ‘Stella d’Oro’ is rightly popular for its bright yellow blooms in summer. ‘Pardon Me’ is a rich wine red variety great for hotting up a border.

Talking of climbers, there are so many available in garden centres and nurseries it’s sometimes hard to decide which to choose, so next month I’ll be looking at the best for walls, fences, arches and pergolas.

Cooking meat on a barbecue

When you're cooking any kind of meat on a barbecue, such as poultry (chicken or turkey), pork, steak, burgers or sausages, make sure: • The coals are glowing red with a powdery grey surface before you start cooking, as this means that they're hot enough • Frozen meat is properly thawed before you cook it • You turn the meat regularly and move it around the barbecue to cook it evenly • Remember that meat is safe to eat only when: • It is piping hot in the centre • There is no pink meat visible • Any juices are clear "Don't assume that because meat is charred on the outside it will be cooked properly on the inside," says the FSA spokesperson. "Cut the meat at the thickest part and ensure none of it is pink on the inside."

Some meat, such as steaks and joints of beef or lamb, can be served rare (not cooked in the middle) as long as the outside has been properly cooked. This will kill any bacteria that might be on the outside of the meat. However, food made from minced meat, such as sausages and burgers, must be cooked thoroughly all the way through.

Tips to calm the symptoms:

Don’t mow your lawn

Ideally, if grass makes you sneeze, ask someone else to mow your lawn when the pollen count is high. If you react to grass and you spend time on the lawn, you'll get breathing symptoms and often also hives.

Create a barrier

Smear a nasal barrier balm inside your nostrils, or use a drug-free nasal spray or dab of petroleum jelly (such as Vaseline) to prevent pollen sticking to the lining of your nose. Ask your pharmacist about nasal barrier balms and nasal sprays.

Time it right

If possible, avoid outside activity when the air is warming up and cooling down as pollen count is highest at these times, around 8-10am and 5-7pm.

Shut the windows

Don’t drive with the windows open, as this will allow pollen to come in. Open bedroom windows at night, but close them when you get up in the morning.

Damp dust regularly

Dusting with a damp or microfibre cloth will collect dust and stop any pollen from becoming airborne.

Wash your hair

Pollen is sticky and may be in your hair, it can then transfer to your pillow and affect you during the night. If you’ve been out in the evening, wash your hair and change your clothes before going into the bedroom.

Vacuum

Pollen can live in carpets, so make sure you vacuum regularly.

Think about your medication Talk to your GP or pharmacist about your hay fever, if your symptoms are not controlled by your current treatment.

Non-sedating antihistamines may be adequate for mild or intermittent hay fever symptoms, but many people will need to use a steroid nasal spray (available from a pharmacy or prescribed by a GP) to treat the inflammation in the nose caused by hay fever.

This must be used regularly, and relief will be felt after a few days.

It should be continued once or twice daily until the hay fever season is over.

Should I reapply sunscreen if I swim?

Water washes off sunscreen and the cooling effect of the water can make you think you're not getting burned. Water also reflects UV rays, increasing your exposure.

Even "waterproof" sunscreens should be reapplied after going in the water.

What should I do if I get sunburn?

Painkillers, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, will ease the pain by helping to reduce inflammation caused by sunburn.

Sponge sore skin with cool water, then apply soothing after sun or calamine lotion. If you feel unwell or the skin swells badly or blisters, seek medical help. Stay out of the sun until all signs of redness have gone.

Are children more at risk of sunburn?

Young skin is delicate and very easily damaged by the sun. Use at least a factor 15 sunscreen and choose a broad-spectrum brand that has a four- or five-star rating.

Apply it to areas not protected by clothing, such as the face, ears, feet and backs of hands. Choose sunscreens that are formulated for children and babies' skin, as these are less likely to irritate their skin.

What sun protection factor (SPF) should I use?

Use sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. The higher the SPF, the better. Go for broad-spectrum sunscreens, which protect against harmful UVA and UVB rays. Make sure the product is not past its expiry date. Most sunscreens have a shelf life of two to three years.

What is broad spectrum and the star-rating?

Broad-spectrum products provide protection against the sun’s UVB and UVA rays. The sun protection factor, or SPF, is a measurement of the amount of UVB protection. The higher the number, the greater the protection. In the UK, UVA protection is measured with a star rating. Sunscreen has from 0 to 5 stars. The higher the number of stars, the greater the protection.

How long can I stay in the sun?

Don’t spend any longer in the sun than you would without sunscreen.

Sunscreen should not be used as an excuse to stay out in the sun.

Instead, it offers protection when exposure is unavoidable. The summer sun is most damaging to your skin in the middle of the day.

Spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm, under umbrellas, trees, canopies or indoors.

BBQ PRAWNS Ingredients

Serves: 6 • 4 Tbsp olive oil • 4 Tbsp lemon juice • 3 Tbsp chopped fresh parsley • 1 Tbsp minced garlic • Freshly ground black pepper • Crushed chilli flakes to taste • 700g fresh king prawns, peeled and de-veined

Method

In a large, glass bowl, stir together the olive oil, lemon juice, parsley, garlic and black pepper. Season with crushed chillies, if desired.

Add prawns, and toss to coat.

Marinate in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. Preheat barbecue for high heat. Thread prawns onto skewers, piercing once near the tail and once near the head. Discard any remaining marinade. Lightly oil cooking grate. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes per side, or until opaque.

BBQ TUNA TERIYAKI

HOMEMADE BBQ SAUCE

Serves: 4 • 2 Tbsp soy sauce • 1 Tbsp rice wine • 1 large clove garlic, minced • 1 knob fresh root ginger, minced • 4 tuna steaks (about 2cm / 3/4 inch thick) • 1 Tbsp vegetable oil

Serves: 8 • 120g (4 oz) ketchup • 2 Tbsp dark brown soft sugar • 2 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce • 1 Tbsp cider vinegar • 1 dash hot sauce, such as Tabasco • 1 clove garlic, minced • 1/4 teaspoon mustard powder • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Method

In a shallow dish, stir together soy sauce, rice wine, garlic and root ginger. Place tuna in the marinade, and turn to coat.

Cover, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. Preheat barbecue for medium-high heat. Remove tuna from marinade, and discard remaining liquid. Brush both sides of steaks with oil. Cook tuna for approximately for 3 to 6 minutes per side.

RHUBARB FOOL Ingredients

In a small saucepan over medium heat, stir together the ketchup, sugar, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, hot sauce, garlic, mustard powder and salt. Bring to a simmer, then remove from heat and allow to cool slightly before brushing on your favourite barbecued meats.

• 1 lb 4oz (570g) rhubarb • 5 level teaspoons sugar or artificial sweetener • 1 level teaspoon chopped fresh root ginger • 7oz (200 g) 0% fat Greek yoghurt

To garnish

• 2 pieces stem ginger • Pre-heat the oven to gas mark 4, 350°F (180°C).

Method

Prepare the Roasted rhubarb and leave until cold (can be done a few hours ahead). Whip the cream to soft, billowy peaks. Tip the rhubarb and juices into the bottom of a small glass serving bowl or trifle dish, keeping a few pieces back with a little juice. Spoon the custard over the rhubarb, then the cream, and finish off with the reserved rhubarb and a drizzle of the syrupy juices.

I’m Bored !

“I’m bored” said Bethany to Christie cat as they sat in the garden together eating breakfast. “I’m bored and I can’t think of anything to do!”

“Bored!

Bethany wasn’t really paying much attention, she was slowly hopping round, feeling grumpy and not knowing why she had agreed to come when she’d have rather stayed at home feeling bored.

How can you be bored when you have such a lovely garden to play in, a house full of books to read and games to play?” asked Christie quite surprised.

Just then she heard a quiet quacking noise and looked down. By her feet was a tiny fluffy yellow ducking! Every time Bethany hopped forward, the duckling followed quacking at her!

“I know” said Bethany glumly, “But I’ve played most of the games so many times and I’m not in the mood for reading today”.

“Go back to your mum, stop following me” grumped Bethany

Oh dear, thought Christie. She really wasn’t sure what to suggest next! Just then Daniel popped round to see what the friends had planned for the day.

The duckling didn’t listen and carried on following her along the path. Bethany started to look round for the mummy duck so she could point the duckling in the right direction but there was no duck to be seen! Bethany started to get worried, “where is your mummy?” she asked the duckling. The duckling just quacked and looked at her. Bethany scooped the duckling up in her wings and hurried off to catch up with Daniel and Christie.

“Hi Daniel” said Christie, “I was going to have a quiet day at home but Bethany is feeling bored, have you got any ideas of things she could do?”

“I was thinking about going for a walk round the lake, it’s such a sunny day and there should be some ducklings and goslings to see” said Daniel enthusiastically.

“That’s a good idea, I’d love to come too” said Christie “What about you Bethany?”

Bethany didn’t think it sounded like much fun, she was in a very grumpy mood and wanted to do something exciting but didn’t have any idea what that might be!

“Oh come on Bethany, come with us, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it” encouraged the other two.

Reluctantly Bethany agreed to come along but she flew just behind them all the way there and Christie could almost hear her grumpy wing flaps!

They wondered round the lake for a while, Daniel was looking at all the trees and flowers and Christie listening to the bird song and kept an eye out for ducklings and goslings.

“Hang on, wait up!” she shouted. The other two looked round and saw her rushing up behind them.

Bethany explained that she’d found a lost ducking and that she didn’t know what to do! The friends had a chat and decided the best thing for them to do would be to go back to where Bethany had found it and sit and wait to see if mum turned up.

They all went back and sat under a tree and waited. Bethany spent quite a while playing with the duckling and laughing and having fun. After a while Christie heard some loud quacking and a large duck appeared right in front of them! The little ducking ran straight over to the duck and they started quacking excitedly at each other. It was obvious to the friends that this was the duckling’s mummy and that she was very very pleased to find her baby!

Bethany was sad to see the duckling go but had to admit she had enjoyed her exciting day and wasn’t feeling at all bored anymore!

If you find a baby animal, don’t touch it, quite often the parents won’t be far away and will come back to it.

SEAN SHEAHAN Library dilemma

Leicestershire County Council has been making renewed attempts to establish a community group to run Measham Library, having previously announced that the Library is at risk of being closed by cutbacks unless volunteers come forward to run it. Measham is one of 36 libraries in Leicestershire under threat. In a number of those other communities, local people are in the process of taking over and running their libraries.

However, not all communities face the same challenge. Measham has a popular library which is busier than most. The central part of Measham has the 7th highest levels of deprivation out of around 400 similar sized areas within Leicestershire. The next nearest library is in Ashby, over two miles away, meaning that Measham Library serves a wide area, including Oakthorpe, Donisthorpe and Appleby.

I have been asking whether it is reasonable to expect communities like Measham to run a library from their own resources. The question can only be answered with an honest appraisal of community capacity. I have repeatedly called for officers to make such a determination - all the data is there, but the it seems the Council’s Administration would have us believe that all communities are the same.

Oakthorpe fatal accident

The tragic accident involving a motorcyclist on Measham Road, Oakthorpe in April was widely reported and has brought long standing road safety concerns to the fore. Although Measham Road has vehicle activated signs which have been in place for years, many believe they are no longer enough to control traffic speeds. So, I have launched a petition calling for the County Council to investigate the circumstances of the accident and consider any measures which reduce speed on the road. This will be presented to the next Highways Forum and Highways officers are obliged to come up with a response by the following meeting.

Ashby Road, Moira

After a long campaign, residents in Moira look set to see a reduction in the speed limit from 40mph down to 30mph on Ashby Road, from the railway bridge to Sweet Hill. Leicestershire Police are backing the speed limit reduction, despite refusing earlier demands for the 30mph zone to be extended all the way along to Dorset Drive. Although this has taken far longer than perhaps it should have done, it now looks almost certain to go ahead.

I

wish to begin by thanking all of those who took part in the General Election a few weeks ago, for our democracy to thrive people have to participate not just spectate. I would like to especially thank the 25,505 people who voted for me to remain the Member of Parliament for our constituency. I was proud and heartened that both my vote, and my majority have increased since the last election in 2010, and I can promise you all that I will continue to do my very best to serve ALL the residents of North West Leicestershire and build on our achievements of the past 5 years.

The last Parliamentary term was necessarily about recovery.

Thanks to our actions and tough decisions, unemployment has fallen drastically, the deficit has halved and is on a downward trajectory, and our economic growth rate is amongst the fastest in the developed world. The next 5 years will continue to focus on the economy however there will be a difference in that we now have a majority Conservative Government.

This means we can fulfil our Manifesto Commitments rather than having to trade them away again in Coalition negotiations.

It’s picnic time for sure.

Ours is a One Nation Manifesto that centres on working people.

We can therefore look forward to legislation that will continue to increase apprenticeship numbers, with further reform of welfare to continue to get a fairer deal for taxpayers and help working parents with childcare with proposals that will see the number of hours of free childcare doubled.

We will also be bringing forward a Bill to hold an EU Referendum.

It think it is interesting that at the ballot box Political parties which did not trust the people to have a vote on our future relationship with the EU, were not ultimately trusted by the electorate themselves.

Yes, it’s that time of year.

Locally, I will continue to work to ensure that our economic growth

I want to see improvements in our infrastructure and I believe it is high time that our public transport offering in North West Leicestershire was significantly improved. To that end, I will be pressing the Government most strongly to look at the opportunities that can be created by reopening the National Forest Railway Line.

On May 7th a Conservative District Council was also returned with an increased majority and I will be working with the leadership of the Council to build on our local achievements to improve our towns and villages. Specifically this means building on the foundations that have been laid for the regeneration of Coalville, with an increased retail offering in an attractive setting. Continuing to build on the vibrant atmosphere in Ashby which in part is due to the hard work of the Conservative controlled Town Council, and continuing the improvements to our villages and rural communities with measures such as the ongoing broadband rollout. All of this is being done with the promise of no increase on Council Tax during its term in office.

In Parliament I will continue to fight for my constituents both collectively and where necessary individually. In the last Parliament I was able to bring forward legislation to review decriminalisation of non-payment of the TV licence fee which I am hopeful will become law in the near future, as well as fighting successful campaigns such as seeing Air Passenger Duty removed from Children’s flights.

I also fought against the HS2 project and intend to continue undertaking such campaigns during this term in Parliament, in order to fulfil my duty which is to do all I can to improve the lives of my constituents and those of all the people of our great nation.
