Phil Hughes from BUJFC said “The club would like to thank every single person who put their green token in our pot. The money will go towards purchasing new training equipment for the new Under 7s team who have just started their very first season of playing mini-soccer. These are the kids who have moved up from our very successful soccer school, and have now begun playing 5-a-side matches against other clubs. It is a very exciting time for them and we want to make sure they have all the right equipment to make it as fun and as safe as possible. Our soccer school (for kids from reception year and year 1) is continuing under a new coach this year and takes place on Saturday mornings from 11am to 12pm.”

NEXT ISSUE OUT Friday 22nd November 2013 Advert/Article Deadline: Thursday 15th November

On Sunday, 8th September, The Severn Trent Water Visitor Centre at Cropston was a hub of activity for the Annual LOROS Walk on the Wildside sponsored walk, where over 500 people turned out in support. The Mayor of Charnwood Councillor Sandie Forrest and her Consort Mr Roger Forrest officially opened the walk. Leicester City’s Filbert Fox, along with Brad, the bumble bee led the activities and warmed all the crowds with a fun exercise routine. Everyone had the opportunity to browse the craft stalls, children’s activities, and a variety of food outlets – including a huge array of bug themed cakes. This year there were two routes to choose from – a new 7 mile and the 13 mile walks. This event meant a huge amount to the walkers – most carrying out the walk in memory of loved ones, including Ishvar Rohit who took part in his 10th ‘Walk on the Wildside’ in memory of his wife Kamla. Christian Weikert-Picker, LOROS fundraiser said, “It was a super day, ideal for walking – not too hot and not too cold. There were smiles from participants en route and a great amount of supporters from the community, as well as dogs and their owners. We are looking at a pledge of over £30,000 through sponsorship, which will make a huge difference to the running of the hospice. This is one of our major fundraising events in the calendar – well done to everyone who took part and helped make the day such a huge triumph.” Due to the ever-growing success of this event, LOROS are already planning next year’s event which will take place on Sunday 14th September 2014. Remember to keep an eye on our website www.loros.co.uk/fundraising and on our Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/LOROShospice for photos from last Sunday. All money raised will ensure LOROS continues to provide care and support to terminally ill patients and their families living in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

The White Horse Birstall Bake off, raises over £500 for Cancer charity, Macmillan. 21st September saw an influx of creative cakes, Fabulous flapjacks and Beautiful baking arrive at the White Horse for the first Great Birstall Bake off. “We were thrilled to receive over 35 entries, including 6 young bakers. There were a wide variety of offerings for the categories and the standard was superb” said Rebecca Kay who came up with the idea of the Great Birstall Bake off. “I wanted to offer the village a community event in which all could join in and it be a bit of fun!” The Bake off was just the first stage of a busy ‘cake fueled’ weekend at the White Horse as on 22nd September, the pub held its annual Macmillan Worlds biggest coffee morning. “it seemed a perfect time to do the Great Birstall Bake Off the day before as then we would have some really special cakes to offer at the coffee morning” Said Charlotte Foy of the White Horse. The event was a great success and raised over £500, thanks to all the donated cakes for the Bake off and those who attended the Coffee Morning and gave generously. Additional funds raised by Gift aided donations are likely to take the final total to nearer £600. The cakes were judged by Mr and Mrs Allen

from Allens family bakers, Maxilyn Geary and Kath Wright from the Birstall WI and Rob Mackay, Chef at the White Horse, following WI guidelines for appearance, texture and flavour. The winners received a prize and a rosette with the best overall Birstall Baker, Meg Roach receiving a sash for her peanut butter Cupcakes and stunning Coffee Mochachino cake which looked and tasted delicious. Hayley Toone won best cake as well as the best decorated categories for her 3 tiered carrot cake, a unanimous decision by the judges. Faye north won the cupcake section, Laura Florence the biscuits, Ian Critchlow the bread category,Jacqueline Abela the Sweet Bake for her custard tarts, Best under 16 entry went to 9 year old Lexie McLoughlin for her beautifully decorated Victoria Sponge. Thanks goes to all those who donated Prizes; Dominic at David Norths, Rawlins College, Greenacres Cafe, Hannahs of Quorn, Tesco, Co-op, Starbucks, Wilkinsons, Amy Harrison for her design work, Flexprint for their printing and to Nick Loach for adding the Sunday quiz money to the fund raising pot. Charlotte and Beccy would especially like to thank everyone who Baked for the event and we hope many more will join in the fun next year so they can crown a new Great Birstall Bake off champion in 2014 and raise even more for Macmillan. Birstall RFC Impressive Form Continues Birstall RFC's start to life in the RFU league and Cup structure continued on Saturday with their first ever appearance in the RFU Junior Vase against a strong and experienced Tupton side. Having comprehensively beaten Woodhouse Giants from Mansfield in their first midlands 5 league match 53-0, Birstall knew facing a team a league above with an unbeaten start to the season would be tough. Early exchanges showed that this would be a forwards orientated game with the heavy Tupton pack taking control of most set pieces and the oppositions use of the driving maul was causing a problem early on. Some great tactical kicking from Birstall managed to relieve the pressure in a number of occasions and kept Tupton in their own half. Midway though the first half a penalty against Tupton gave Tom Knott the chance to put some points on the board and he duly obliged to make it 3-0. Some great defence kept the score like this until the brink of half time when a soft penalty gave Tupton the chance to level which they did 3-3 at half time.

Rothley Bowling Club Autumn Fayre Rothley Bowling Club will be holding their Autumn Fayre at Rothley Centre, Mountsorrel Lane on Saturday 16th November from 10am until noon. Admission 50p including tea/coffee.

The second half proved much of the same but with the Tupton forwards tiring it gave the Birstall backs a chance to show their worth after some good play an opportunity was set up for tom knott to score a drop goal from infront of the posts. Minutes later some great pressure in defence forced a Tupton mistake giving player-coach chris byrne the ball with space ahead of him allowing him to touch down in the corner as the Tupton backs closed in. Conversion missed 113. A Tupton pen cut the gap to 5.

Many stalls including cakes and homemade produce, crafts, bric-a-brac, books, bottle tombola, raffle, refreshments, etc.

The game started to open up from here on and the frustrated Tupton defence started giving away more and more penalties. In one occasion this allowed flanker Josh Hastings the chance to take a quick tap and break through the static defence to score under pressure. Conversion made 18-6.

HATS 2013 PANTO

The rest of the game was tightly fought with both sides having chances to score. When the referee blew the final whistle cheers rang out from the loyal Birstall support. A great effort to beat a side a league above and the cup run continues. Next up an away tie to cresswell crusaders.

A very warm welcome is extended to all.

One of our founder members, Elaine Hunt, wrote the first pantomime HATS performed way back in 1992. She has now teamed up with another member, Phil Walton, to write this years pantomime, "Bah! Humbug the Panto". Phil has also written all the songs and put together the music. There are still several members in the group who performed in that first panto in 1992 but we have quite a lot of new talented members who have joined our group in the last couple of years. Our pantomime this year is not one of the traditional stories but it does contain all the traditional panto ingredients. Oh, yes it does! Nasty old Scrooge is tightening his purse strings on his towns folk. He doesn't even want to finance this years pantomime. How will he get rid of Goldilocks, Aladdin, Snow White and many other pantomime characters? Will his plan succeed or will Robin Good & Marion save the day! How would you like it if the local council banned all Pantomimes? What a dreadful thought. So better not miss this one just in case they do!

Spend that ÂŁ1 Closer To Home County Policing For Your Local

A local hospice says it hopes that National Lottery players will support causes closer to home in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland as the National Lottery doubles the price of a ticket from ÂŁ1 to ÂŁ2 with effect from Thursday 3rd October. LOROS is encouraging those who do not feel they can continue playing the National Lottery due to the rise, to turn their attentions to their local charity. LOROS has been running a lottery since October 1996 and currently has over 21,000 members, currently raising around ÂŁ800,000 per year towards hospice care. Lottery Manager Liz Singleton says “the LOROS Lottery plays a very real part in providing funding needed to continue the wonderful work carried out at the hospice and in the community but we need more people to come forward and join in the funâ€?.  Â

WITCH POTION HUNT 26 - 27 OCTOBER 11AM - 3PM

We have also seen an increase in reports of theft from motor vehicles, mainly in beauty spot car parks such as Bradgate Park. When leaving your vehicle please ensure that you do not leave your valuables on display, either hide them away or better still take them with you.

The   LOROS lottery still only costs ÂŁ1 per week to    Â‘ enter, and has no plans to match its fee with that of the National Lottery.

„ „ ‰ TheVenue: other benefit to supporting the LOROS Lottery is that supporters can see where and how their • ‰ Š ‰ Œ – contribution is making a difference to local lives, „ ‰—†… ƒ€˜ ™… šƒ and, indeed people who they may know.

Although the holiday season is nearly over, some people will still be going away over the coming months. If this applies to you then we recommend that you inform your neighbours when you are going away and how long for, so that they can keep an eye out for anything unusual whilst you’re away.

Liz Contact: ƒ†›šš œˆƒ›œˆ added “Around 2,500 local people receive free, high-quality, compassionate care and support  Âž ž each year and our weekly lottery raises the equivalent to the cost of 22 full time nurses on our wardâ€?.

Finally we have had some metal and garden equipment thefts in the area. If you are using garden equipment i.e. lawn mowers/strimmers etc please do not leave them unattended at the front of your property. We are also advising people to protect their property by marking it with Smart Water or similar property marking equipment. ‚ƒ „ Thank you Steve Quinn - PCSO 6646

Over the last month we have seen an increase in burglaries across the county and we are encouraginging people to ensure they lock all doors and windows when leaving their house. It may seem obvious but when the weather is nice it is tempting to leave windows open and this is when your home is most vulnerable. Also please bear in mind where you leave your car keys, as we have had a number of car key burglaries recently where thieves break in, take the car keys and steal the car. If you are going away, we recommend either hiding your car keys, if you are not taking them with you, or leaving them with a friend.

A Creative Summer Local professional artist Sue Faulks, and her husband Simon, a guitarist and teacher, ran various courses/ workshops throughout the summer, from their new studio in Birstall. Simon ran an “Improvisation Workshop” for guitarists. This was a two-hour session, which covered various topics, including: ear training, scales and arpeggios, and rhythmic phrasing. The emphasis was on learning to unlock one’s own musical creativity. “The age range was from teenagers right through to retired folk,” Simon explains, “and a congenial atmosphere was enjoyed by all. I am hoping to run a variety of sessions in the future, for beginners, to the more advanced”. “The Art for Children” course was attended by a group of 9 children from the age of 7 – 11 years. It was very eclectic in its creativity, with activities including: learning to draw a cartoon bear; crayon- melting; tie dying t- shirts; clay fridge magnets and galaxy door plaques! Sue says, “We managed to pack a lot into the week! There was a lovely atmosphere- the children produced some fabulous work, and hopefully made some new friends too”. “The Artsy Videos for Teens” day workshop was also a very inventive affair. A group of 4 teenagers produced line and wash illustrations, which were then photographed and imported into editing software, and music was added to it. The end result was a great little stop frame animation called ‘Seasons Change’, and can be seen on YouTube, by going to the channel SueFaulksArt. At “The Portrait Workshop for Adults” (which was attended by 5 people), the day was spent building skills towards a life-drawing session. In the morning, the focus was on drawing skills and techniques as well as the main aspects of portraiture. Then the afternoon, was all about observational drawing- firstly the eye, and then a portrait from life, which everyone found very absorbing (after some initial trepidation!). Hanna said; “Loved the workshop, so great to sketch again!”

The British Methodist Youth Choir November 2nd 2013 The British Methodist Youth Choir will be “In Concert” at Mountsorrel Methodist Church on Saturday November 2nd 2013 commencing at 7pm.

Sue also says, “I thoroughly enjoyed all the sessions, and hope that everyone felt pleased with the creativity they had discovered. It’s surprising what you can achieve when you’re prepared to have a go! Many thanks must go to Simon, and my daughters Joanna and Jenny Faulks, whose help was invaluable throughout the events”. Sue hopes to run more courses like this in the future, and as well as her private lessons/ workshops, has been running a small group for adults called ‘Promising Painters’ from her studio since April 2013. For more details contact Sue on Mob: 07984 197114, or visit her website: suefaulksart.co.uk. For guitarist courses, contact Simon on 07954379482 Sue and Simon are both fully CRB checked

Get Safe Online launches new online safety hotline for parents Recent events have made online safety for children more important than ever, but when parents feel less technically savvy than their kids it can be difficult for parents to manage online risks and feel confident when speaking to their kids about how to keep safe online. To help parents stay up to date, non-profit awareness organisation Get Safe Online has partnered with Norton by Symantec, Neighbourhood Watch and CEOP to launch its ‘Switched On’ campaign, which enables parents to be able to sign up to monthly newsletter emails and download guides from www.getsafeonline.org. The latest information leaflet is attached to this email. These will provide a wealth of information such as the new online channels that kids are using, the different kinds of technology available for kids, as well as the latest safety issues, relevant organisations and the appropriate steps of how to keep children of all ages safe. Ofcom research reveals that 63% of parents of 12- 15 year olds feel their kids know more about the internet than they do and parents are more concerned about their child downloading a virus (23%) than they are about the contact their child might be having with people online (19%). This comes at a time when 30% of children aged 8 - 15 with a profile on Facebook, Ask.fm and other social media sites have their profiles set so that friends of friends or anyone can see them. Get Safe Online is also launching the ‘SwitchedOn Hotline’ throughout September for parents to ring up experts from Norton by Symantec to speak about any online safety issues that are worrying them, including advice on parental control software.

Top Tips for how parents can keep their children safe online: • Stay private – ensure your child understands the risks of sharing personal information online, such as their full name, location, images and video content and that they should only share these with people they know and trust in the offline world • Opt for parental settings - use the parental control settings on your browser, search engine and internet security package and block pop-ups and spam emails. You should also consider setting up a family e-mail account which can be used specifically to register for websites, competitions etc. • Choose strong passwords – make sure you have activated password protection on your child’s mobile phone or tablet and include random letters and numbers to keep them strong • Keep security up to date – By installing and keeping an internet security product up to date you can protect against identity theft, scams and other threats. Cybercriminals can access social media profiles or extract other personal data from unsecured machines: good internet security software should remove these risks immediately

• Be safe and social – make sure you keep your child’s profile private and use the highest security settings so you can control who sees what and that they report anything untoward to yourself or another adult • Talk about it – encourage conversation about what they are interested in, so you can make the internet a shared, family experience • Don’t worry – the internet is a fantastic tool and with the right guidelines in place there is no reason why it can’t be used to its full advantage. If you are worried about anything at all go to www.GetSafeOnline.org for further advice The Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) is dedicated to tackling the sexual abuse and exploitation of children and young people. CEOP is here to help young people (up to age 18) who have been forced or tricked into taking part in sexual activity with anyone online or in the real world. For information, advice and to report concerns directly to CEOP, visit the Safety Centre www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre.

• Protect your money – ensure your child cannot gain access to an online shop or other website where your card details are stored. If your child is paying for something with your permission, make sure they check to make sure the padlock symbol is displayed in the browser frame and the web address begins with ‘https://’. The ‘s’ stands for ‘secure’

Sometimes it can be difficult for parents to monitor what children are doing online and research shows that while 39% of parents of 1215s use the history function to see which websites their child has visited, 42% of children aged 12 -15 said they know how to delete website histories and 19% of 12-15s have actually deleted website histories in the last year.

New cycle trainers geared up to share their skills A group of residents who over a year ago were wobbly on two wheels have become fully fledged cycling instructors. The five were inspired to study for the their National Standard Instructor Training after taking part in Leicestershire County Council’s free adult cycle courses. Caroline Scothern from Ashby de la Zouch, Sallie Butt from Leicester, Lisa Wilkinson from Sileby, Mahesh Parmar from Birstall and Enid Danton from Melton began their training last September after building up their skills and confidence during the free sessions. The group now all help deliver adult cycle courses and other cycling initiatives on behalf of the council. Lisa has also secured a job as a road safety tutor, delivering Bikeability sessions in schools. Mum-of-two Lisa said: “I initially decided to take part in an adult cycle course because I used to fall off my bike as a child and my cycling skills didn’t really improve as an adult! “I took part in one of the Loughborough courses and loved it. Now I cycle to school and back with my children and we enjoy family cycling trips. “I am thrilled to qualify as an instructor – it’s a great feeling to be able to share my experiences and skills with others and help them improve their cycling skills too.” Peter Osborne, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “The adult cycle courses have been running since 2011 and have proved to be extremely popular. “It is fantastic that some of the participants have discovered a love of cycling to the extent that they have been inspired to share their skills with others and have even, in Lisa’s case, secured a job working in the field.” The courses are ideal for people who have never been on a bike before, riders who want to improve their confidence and people who haven’t cycled for years. A total of 428 people have taken part in this year’s courses, which end at the beginning of November. However, they are planned to run again next year. Tap into online flood survey Residents are encouraged to take part in a questionnaire on local flooding which is being launched by Leicestershire County Council. The online survey went live this week and will gather views which will help to form the council's flood risk management strategy. Flooding can cause damage, disruption and destruction where it occurs and increased heavy rainfall over the past two years suggests the risk could be growing. This consultation asks residents for their views and observations on any history of flooding, both on their property and locally. The council will be looking at the risk in areas where surface water collects after extreme rainfall, at small ‘ordinary’ watercourses such as ditches, streams and brooks which overflow and areas where ground water rises up from underlying rocks or water flowing from underground springs. Peter Osborne, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for flooding, said: “This questionnaire is a good opportunity for the council to find out local information from residents. Home owners and businesses have knowledge built up over seasons which is very useful to us. “Replies to the questionnaire will help the council to look at how the effects can be managed in the years ahead." The questionnaire will be live for eight weeks and can be found at www.leics.gov.uk/floodstrategy - for more information, please call 0116 305 7210 or email flooding@leics.gov.uk

FILMREVIEW Thor: The Dark World - 12A

Nine hotspots targeted in dog fouling crackdown A BLITZ on dog fouling is targeting nine ‘hotspot’ areas across Charnwood.

Released 30th October

Thor: The Dark World is the next installment in the thrilling Marvel story from one of the directors of TV’s magnificent Game of Thrones. A dark force from before the birth of the universe has returned led by an evil genius that even the gods cannot conquer. It is, then, for Thor (Chris Hemsworth) to go into battle, not only to save Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) but to protect the universe from the evil Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) and the darkness he wants to plunge us all into. Thor: The Dark World 3D is a ripping adventure with some great sequences of London being blasted.

Philomena - 12A Released 1st November

Philomena is a moving true story about one woman’s quest to right a terrible wrong. Martin Sixsmith (Steve Coogan) is a political journalist, out of a job and depressed. When someone suggests he write a story about an old woman whose child was taken away from her by nuns fifty years ago, he thinks it’s not his sort of thing. But as he investigates, and meets Philomena (Judi Dench), he realises not only is this his way out of a career dead end but the start of a beautiful relationship. Philomena is a warm and witty tale from the director of The Queen.

GET YOUR CHRISTMAS NEWS AND EVENTS TO US - NEXT ISSUE OUT Friday 22nd November 2013 Advert/Article Deadline: Thursday 15th November

Charnwood Borough Council’s annual Don’t Muck Around enviro-crime campaign will focus on areas where dog fouling issues have been raised by parish councils following a recent consultation. Officers will increase patrols, post awareness leaflets and seek to prosecute offenders where possible – but efforts are also being stepped across the entire borough. The Council has also produced a tongue-in-cheek ‘public information’ film to help people deal with dog fouling as well as a campaign Facebook page. Alan Twells, Charnwood Borough Council’s Head of Regulatory Services, said: “Dog fouling is one of the biggest sources of environmental complaint we receive and the Don’t Muck Around campaign is our commitment to residents that we will take action by educating, raising awareness and taking action against offenders. “It is frustrating for our communities that there are still people who do not realise that wrapped dog waste can be placed in any public highway litter bin – not just designated dog waste bins. “There is no excuse for it and our analysis shows that the people most likely to commit offences are aged between 21 and 40 – they’re old enough to know better.” The areas being monitored are: • Ashby Road Estate: Gracedieu Way, Sharpley Rd, Hermitage Way, Shortcliffe Park • Rothley: Fowke Street Playing Fields • Barkby: Brookside • Queniborough: Rearsby Road Playing Fields • East Goscote: Weavers Wynd and Jubilee Playing Fields • Woodhouse: Brook Road, Beaumanor Road and School Lane • Montsorrel: Memorial Park, • Sileby: Greedon Rise Playing area • Birstall: School Lane Playing Fields Charnwood Borough Council receives nearly 200 reports of dog fouling each year and earlier this year prosecuted two people in court for dog foulingrelated offences. The award-winning Don’t Muck Around campaign kicked off on Friday, September 27, 2013 and will tackle dog fouling, fly-tipping and litter over the next three months. People can follow the campaign on Facebook (www.facebook.com/dontmuck) or by checking our website www.charnwood.gov.uk/dontmuckaround2013 To report offences in Charnwood call in confidence on 01509 634564 or email cleaner.greener@charnwood.gov.uk.
