The Mayor of Charnwood Councillor Sandie Forrest and her Consort Mr Roger Forrest officially opened the walk. Leicester City’s Filbert Fox, along with Brad, the bumble bee led the activities and warmed all the crowds with a fun exercise routine. Everyone had the opportunity to browse the craft stalls, children’s activities, and a variety of food outlets – including a huge array of bug themed cakes. This year there were two routes to choose from – a new 7 mile and the 13 mile walks. This event meant a huge amount to the walkers – most carrying out the walk in memory of loved ones, including Ishvar Rohit who took part in his 10th ‘Walk on the Wildside’ in memory of his wife Kamla. Christian Weikert-Picker, LOROS fundraiser said, “It was a super day, ideal for walking – not too hot and not too cold. There were smiles from participants en route and a great amount of supporters from the community, as well as dogs and their owners. We are looking at a pledge of over £30,000 through sponsorship, which will make a huge difference to the running of the hospice. This is one of our major fundraising events in the calendar – well done to everyone who took part and helped make the day such a huge triumph.” Due to the ever-growing success of this event, LOROS are already planning next year’s event which will take place on Sunday 14th September 2014. Remember to keep an eye on our website www.loros.co.uk/fundraising and on our Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/LOROShospice for photos from last Sunday. All money raised will ensure LOROS continues to provide care and support to terminally ill patients and their families living in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

Smokers urged to join the Stoptober challenge Stoptober – England and Wales’ mass 28-day stop smoking challenge – is back following its huge success last year, which saw 160,000 people successfully complete the challenge. The campaign is launched by Public Health England (PHE) as new research shows the extra years of life that can be gained by giving up smoking and staying smokefree †. Someone who quits smoking for Stoptober, and doesn’t smoke again, could gain an extra 7 days of life, every 28 days, for the rest of their life. Along with the health benefits, stopping will save the average smoker over £150 a month and almost £2,000 a year ‡. During last year’s Stoptober campaign, a staggering £25 million was saved by the 160,000 people from not buying cigarettes. Over 8 million people in England smoke and it remains the nation’s biggest killer, with half of long-term smokers dying prematurely from a smoking-related disease. Research shows that those who stop smoking for 28 days are 5 times more likely to stay smokefree and Stoptober’s ambition is to help smokers achieve this goal. Chief Medical Officer Professor Dame Sally Davies said: 'One in two long-term smokers die as a result of smoking, this is the single biggest cause of premature death taking more than 100,000 lives in the UK and costing the NHS up to £2.7 billion each year. “Life is precious and Stoptober is all about supporting and encouraging each other to quit – potentially adding years to your life.” Taking part in the challenge is a first step to a longer
and healthier life so have a go, by stopping with Stoptober. Professor Kevin Fenton, Director of Health and Wellbeing at PHE said: Campaigns such as Stoptober, along with the support provided by local stop smoking services, play a huge role in helping people to stop. Whilst smoking prevalence across the country as a whole is falling steadily, it remains high in some parts and is still the biggest cause of premature death with more than 80,000 deaths in England every year. We want every smoker to consider making a quit attempt this October and join the thousands of people who are feeling the benefits from stopping smoking last year. Stoptober provides smokers with a range of free support including a new stop smoking pack, a 28day mobile phone app and text support with daily updates and quitting advice, detailed tools and tips for coping, as well as the encouragement and support from thousands of people quitting together through Stoptober social media. Stoptober 2013 starts on Tuesday 1 October and runs for 28 days. For more information and to join the biggest stop smoking challenge of its kind, search ‘Stoptober’ online. † University of Toronto: 21st Century Hazards of Smoking and Benefits of Cessation in the United States. ‡ Based on £7.77 for a packet of cigarettes (Office of National Statistics, May 2013) and an average daily consumption of 13 manufactured cigarettes per smoker (2011 General Lifestyle Survey)

THE LONG JOURNEY NORTH by DANNY GREEN
Volunteers from the Rothley based Trust who are holders of the prestigious Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service took the children out on their two boats, Dandelion and St. Clare which are moored at Thurmaston and Quorn marinas. Two separate parties of children and charity volunteers cruised towards each other, meeting at Mountsorrel Lock where they had a picnic lunch before swapping boats and heading back to their respective marinas. The youngsters who all come from disadvantaged families in the Mogilev region of Belarus arrived in Leicestershire on 3rd August as part of a 5-year programme designed to improve their general health and give them respite from the conditions in their homeland. The children who are all aged 9-12yrs were placed with volunteer host families throughout West Leicestershire during their stay. Charity spokesman John Buckby said “This is the second consecutive year that The Baldwin Trust have provided a day out for the children. The weather was kind to us and the kids had a great time steering the boat and operating the locks. It was a pleasure to see them relaxing and having fun in the fresh air. We would like to say a big thank you to everyone at The Baldwin Trust for their generosity and great hospitality again this year”. Birstall Rugby FC News...
Birstall brought the 2012/13 season to a close with a spectacular finish, scooping four pieces of silverware from both the leagues and two cups. In the President's Spring Cup they rode to a hard fought victory against Burbage winning 24-20 at Belgrave. Spurred on by this success, they then entertained Ashby at Vipers on a Sunday 28th April, narrowly missing out in a very close game to a converted try in the closing minutes to conclude 19-26.
Add to this that the 1st XV finished 2nd in their league whilst the 2nd XV won theirs, means that on Friday 17th May Birstall were presented at the Leicestershire RFU awards dinner to collect four honours to mark what has been the most successful season in their history! On The Bank Holiday Sunday 5th May, President's Day brought the season to a jubilant close, with the 2nds playing a winning game against a Delve's Invitational team, and the 1sts claiming victory against a President's Invitational XV. A good crowd turned out to support and enjoy a BBQ and beer tent on what turned out to be a warm and sunny day. Presentations concluded a successful day and the customary celebrations continued down at The Plough! Back in May the coaches offered five weeks of Touch rugby sessions and successfully encouraged new interest through this particular initiative. The pre-season was successful with 2 wins against East Leake and Vipers 2nds , the 2nd XV were beaten by Castle Donnington but much promise was shown by a lot of the debutees The new season started on Saturday and it showed how hard the the players had been training in the close season. Birstall’s first game in the Midlands league was against Woodhouse Giants. This was a trip into the unknown for the 1st XV , but they had nothing to fear as they romped to a 53 – 0 victory . Meanwhile the social side of things continues to thrive with the next planned social event being a cheese and wine evening to be held at Rothley Village Hall on Saturday 12th October. Warning over suspected bank card phone scam PEOPLE are being warned to beware of a phone scam designed to trick them into giving out confidential bank card details and account information. Leicester City Council’s Trading Standards officers are warning residents to be on their guard following a report from a member of the public who was targeted in a suspected scam earlier this week. The man received a phone call from someone claiming to be a police officer from Spinney Hill police station, who had arrested a person trying to use a cloned credit card in the man’s name. The caller asked the man to check that he had still got his bank card, which he had. He was then told to contact his bank by ringing the telephone number on the back of the card. The phone then went quiet - giving the effect of the caller having hung up when he was really still on the line. The scam works when the unsuspecting victim attempts to ring the bank but really ends up speaking to the original caller, who then asks for confidential bank details, such as security details, card details and even the pin number. In this instance, the intended victim didn’t ring the bank - he repeatedly dialled 1471 to try to establish the caller’s identity, only to be met with verbal abuse. Suspecting it to be a scam he then reported the incident to the police. Now Trading Standards officers are warning other people to be on their guard against such potential scams. Leicester City Council’s Trading Standards manager Ronald Ruddock said: “The scam works by the criminal caller staying on the line and then answering the new call, tricking the victim into believing they are on a call to their bank. “The fraudster will then either ask the person for their pin number, or ask them to key their pin into their telephone keypad, before saying that the bank will be sending a courier to collect the card. “Needless to say the courier will be part of the scam with the criminals ending up with both the credit card and pin number. “This is a variation on the ‘courier scam’, where residents are told that banks or building societies will collect bank cards, and residents should remain suspicious of any call that requests personal banking information. “Criminals are continuing to become highly sophisticated in their attempts to trick consumers into giving this information away. The quick thinking of the potential victim in this instance may well have saved him a lot of money.” Banks and building societies do not send couriers to pick up bank cards, nor will they ever ask customers for their pin numbers. People should never give out pin numbers or the security code off the back of their cards in these circumstances. To report or discuss any form of scam, contact the Citizens Advice Bureau helpline on 08454 040506.
Talks to Stimulate the Intellect The R.C.A have just announced a new series of intellectual, non-political talks to be staged at the Rothley Centre from October this year and to be given by Dr Michael Lynch, retiredModern History Lecturer at Leicester University. The talks follow on from a series given at the end of 2012 and continued into early 2013, all of which attracted good audiences from a wide cross section of the pubic Dr Lynch’s style and presentation is most entertaining. The first series were staged under the banner heading “Know the Past to Understand the Future” and investigated the past actions by the larger imperial powers in foreign parts. Such actions are ingrained into the memories of the people of that area and this conditions their response to interventions and actions in the present day. The first series of talks covered The Middle East, Modern China, Modern Germany, and Modern Russia. The first two of the next series of talks to take place on Tuesday October 15th and Tuesday November 19th will be on North Korea and Brazil. Dr Lynch will just have returned from a pre-talk visit to North Korea and so will be right up to date. He has also promised a third talk to be given on Tuesday January 21st on the novel historical subject “The Eunuchs and Concubines of Ancient China”. The ticket price for each of these talks will be £5. There is plenty of free parking at the Rothley Centre on Mountsorrel Lane, Rothley. The doors will open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. There will be a tea/coffee interval followed by a Q&A session with a finish round about 9.30pm. To book please contact Norman Pratt on 0116 237 5254 or send your cheque made out to the Rothley C.A. together with a stamped, addressed reply envelope to 17 Windmill End, Rothley, LE7 7RP. Book early to be sure of your place.
MOUNTSORREL HERITAGE GROUP “BRINGS HISTORY ALIVE” SAYS LOCAL MP Nicky Morgan has praised a local group who have been awarded a Heritage Lottery grant of £22,800 recently. The Mountsorrel Heritage Group has been given the money to create the ‘Mountsorrel Archive’ and website to promote the village’s rich history. Nicky, along with other guests, visited an exhibition at the Mountsorrel Library last Thursday morning to meet members of the group who were showcasing their project. Whilst there, Nicky learnt some more about the project, and the village’s interesting history. The Group showed her around some
8
of their historical documents and photos .
and hard work.”
The Mountsorrel Archive project will be overseen by a project group led by local resident, Keith Foster.
Keith added: “Today’s event has been a real success and a good start to the project which will run until the end of next year. We have already received contributions of photographs and newspaper articles from members of the public but if anyone has anything about Mountsorrel they wish to contribute to the archive please contact me.”
Nicky commented: “It was truly fascinating to hear about Mountsorrel’s rich history. I learnt some interesting facts; at one time Mountsorrel had 32 pubs and that the Scouts have a long tradition in the village which I'm pleased to say continues today! “This project really brings history alive, and I congratulate the organisers for their passion

THE MONDAY CLUB Mountsorrel ANSTEY. CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY On the 12th August we listened to a fascinating talk given by Mr. Brian Johnson, entitled “And who lived in a house like this.? Not only were we made aware in considerable detail, of the lives of the mentioned people, but we had sight of the individuals and their houses, by means of slides beautifully presented. For many members the talk awakened memories and for others like myself , the various successful individuals whose names were heard in Social Studies in our school days. Amongst the famous names mentioned were Thomas Fielding Johnson who was a prominent Victorian business man and philanthropist in Leicester. He was noted for gifting in 1919, 37 acres of land for the site for the establishment of Leicester University. His home was “Brookfield” in Stoneygate from 1869 up until his death in 1921. He was affectionately known as “The Grand Old Man” Thomas Cook was the world’s best known name in travel. He started from being a 32 year old Cabinet Maker and Baptist Minister, walking from Market Harborough to Leicester, when it occurred to him that many social problems could be solved with education derived from the opportunity to travel. In 1841 he set about enlisting the aid of The Midland Railway Co. and he introduced a successful one day rail excursion for a shilling per person from Leicester to Loughborough. 500 passengers boarded the train and so the “travel business” for Thomas Cook duly
commenced. We saw his house “Thorneycroft” was built in London Road, Leicester. The above are just typical of the amount of information appertaining to many more illustrious characters spoken about, living dotted about the streets of Leicester; all of which helped in diverse ways to create the ensuing wealth and history of the city of Leicester. In celebration of two Birthdays for Mesdames Gill Smart and Diana Whatton, the members were treated to delicious Meringues to enjoy with their cups of Tea. Mrs. Anne Frisby was the lucky recipient of a lovely Pashmina scarf from the Free prize draw – already for Winter!! Our next Meeting for the Club will be on Monday 9th September; a Harvest Bring and Buy, which will be a fund raising event for “The Salvation Army” our Charity for this year. Everyone is welcome and it would be appreciated if there could be generous support in respect of anything saleable, cakes large or small, fruit and vegetables, tinned or fresh, to boost the Fund collection. There will also be in-house entertainment plus, of course, refreshments. For enquires please ring me on 0116 2363467. I have an answerphone, so if I am not available, please leave a message and telephone number and I will return your call. Ann Farndon

Bob Neil’s talk on “Bits and Bobs” held a captivated audience at the July meeting, with lots of potential for a return visit. The competition an unusual small item was won by Sheila Golding and second Betty Dakin. The raffle was won by Dorothy Greasley. On a lovely Saturday morning a small group met up for our visit to Stratford Upon Avon and the river festival - although very busy, we managed to keep together, the river boat ride helping us to keep cool, we thoroughly enjoyed the day, especially the fish and chip lunch, and look forward to our next trip out! August brought us Malcolm Britten’s enlightening talk on the history of Brooksby Hall, we learnt about the Villiers family whose descendants include several prime ministers and even the Royal Family. It was in the 1950’s that the Hall became an Agricultural College, it is still very busy with weddings and other functions throughout the year. Rothley & District RACHMANINOFF Royal British Legion THE MAN AND HIS MUSIC visit the National Memorial Arboretum. Where Our Nation Remembers! BY BARRY COLLETT SATURDAY 9TH NOVEMBER 2013 FROM 10.30-4.30 THE OLD SCHOOL ROOMS, SCHOOL STREET, ROTHLEY
Sergei Rachmaninoff is now one of the most popular composers, yet he went to his grave convinced that his music would not last. His life was torn in two by the Russian Revolution, yet after that event he became one of the world’s greatest pianists. This day course will look at the composer’s career and play a lot of his wonderful music.
On Wednesday 24th of July a group of nine members from the Rothley Branch of the Royal British Legion, plus a comrade from the Barrow on Soar embarked on a 16 seat coach provided by A D Transport Co. of Loughborough to fulfill a long felt wish. This was to show their respects and remember the brave members of the armed forces who lost their lives in the series of conflicts which have occurred since the 2nd world war and are remembered by the many beautiful memorials at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.
The comradeship and empathy is very much to the fore in the many memorials which are spread around the National Arboretum 150 acre site. It is a "Spirtitually Uplifting Place" and a very beautiful place which we should be proud of. The RAF Association Remembrance Garden, the Women's Royal Naval Service, The Fire & Rescue Service, The Railways Industry Memorial, The Falkland Islands Memorial and the South Atlantic Task Force Memorial are only some of the heart tugging and memory stimulating items on show. The Suez Veterans Association, the Women's Army Corp, the Chindit Memorial, the British Korean Veterans were some of the many Army Memorials on show and many more Regimental Memorials including the Royal Leicestershire Regiment are due shortly. It really is a great place to visit and visitor facilities such as their Visitor Centre Restaurant, the numerous tea rooms, their guided tour arrangements, the "Land Train" with running commentary, which you can use to get around the site, and even electric scooters which the less able can hire are all there to make your visit enjoyable. The Rothley group thoroughly enjoyed themselves and with the door to door transport making the whole trip relaxing they all agreed it was a great and interesting day out.
Presented by Barry Collett who founded the 75 strong Rutland Sinfonia in 1975 and conducted all of its concerts for the first 26 seasons. Barry has made 11 recordings both as conductor and pianist and was presented with honorary life membership of the Elgar Society for conducting all of Elgar’s orchestral music. Barry presented our first music event in March this year on the Life and Work of Sir Edward Elgar. Early enrolment advised to secure a place. Booking essential with £5 course fee. Further information from Marion Vincent 0116 2375156 or John Laurance 01509 889757. Organised by the Birstall and Rothley Branch of the WEA with their financial support. Please send bookings to John Laurance 33 Loughborough Road, Hoton, Loughborough, Leics. LE12 5SF. Cheques payable to WEA Birstall and Rothley Branch. Be a Messy Gardener
Mini Dribblers
This autumn, don’t clean up your garden too much for the winter – leave some messy bits. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds fears that ‘sterile’ gardens where nature cannot survive are contributing to the decline in wildlife. Instead, build ‘homes for nature’, urges the RSPB: leave some weeds and garden debris, let the grass stay long, don’t cut all the nettles, leave the odd log to rot, and cut a hole in your fence for the hedgehogs. You can also fill a bucket with woodchips, soil and rotten branches for insects. Or fill up an old washing bowl with water and gravel to create a ‘mini pond’. Many celebrity gardeners applaud this approach. Monty Don of the BBC’s Gardener’s World recently tweeted: ‘Do not strive after tidiness’. The RSPB campaign is in response to a report that 60 per cent of species in the UK have suffered declines in the past few decades. Our sparrows, starlings, grass snakes, frogs, voles and badgers need our help to breed, move around and survive. Mike Clarke, chief executive of the RSPB, says: “Nature in the UK is in trouble. Gardens provide a valuable lifeline for species like starlings, toads, hedgehogs and butterflies, which are struggling to find homes in the wider countryside.
Our intention is to introduce children of all abilities to football by providing a fun and safe learning environment.
Although the overall problem is huge, the solution can start on a small scale....Our aim is to provide one million homes for nature across the UK, because if there is no home for nature, then there’s no nature – it really is that serious.”
Our focus will be to coach junior football related activities which will provide your child with a wide range of skills for their journey through football and life.
Richard III - Leicestershire County Council statement on e-petition Leicestershire County Council leader Nick Rushton is calling on all residents to support the online petition backing Richard III's remains staying in Leicester.
Nick Rushton said: "We need to get the numbers up as a rival campaign in York has around 30,000 signatures and we have just under 16,000. There's also only about six weeks left to support the e-petition. "Richard III died at Bosworth and was taken to Leicester to be buried and that's a compelling enough reason why his remains should be interred in Leicester." The link to the site 'Keep Richard III remains in Leicester' is at: http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/39708

October 3rd to 6th 2013 October sees a sensational event planned at the Great Central Railway with a total of 8 steam locomotives including 2 special guests. Namely, SR Battle of Britain Class 4-6-2 No.34070 'Manston' & Standard 5 'Caprotti' No. 73129. Returning to service after lengthy repairs and time away from the GCR; Southern Railway ‘King Arthur’ Class locomotive, No. 777 ‘Sir Lamiel’ returns, and 5 further locomotives from our home fleet will make up a total of 8 engines. “We intend to finish the gala season in style,” said Kate Tilley, marketing manager for the Great Central Railway. “A wonderful mix of engines and a really busy timetable, with trains passing every few minutes will make this a very special event for all!” The event takes place from Thursday 3rd October right through to Sunday 6th and will also feature mail drops and double headers, as well as freight trains making regular appearances. The Great Central Railway’s famous all day breakfast will be served on certain services and the tea rooms at all stations will be open serving hot and cold meals, and not forgetting a real ale tent at Loughborough. The show is fully narrated with the sounds of the block bells from the signal box to add to the excitement.

FILMREVIEW Diana - 12A Diana is a look at the last two years of Princess Diana’s life from the director of the Oscarnominated Downfall. Princess Diana (Naomi Watts), despite the most public divorce of the century, appears to have it all and seems to be making progress as she throws herself into her good works. But behind the smiles there is a secret affair, the pressures of the paparazzi always out for a shot and the expectations of the British establishment. It’s a story we all know the tragic end to. Diana is a fascinating, responsible look at one of the icons of the 20th century.
R.I.P.D. - 12A R.I.P.D. is a comedy zombie movie with a pretty starry cast from the director of The Time Traveller’s Wife based on the renowned graphic novel. Nick Walker (Ryan Reynolds) was a cop. And then he got killed. But that’s not the end of the story. Now he’s no longer strictly speaking in the land of the living, he’s eligible to join a team of fellow undead officers to track down and nail his own killer. But is villain Bobby Hayes (Kevin Bacon) going to allow him to go about his zombie business? R.I.P.D. is a comedy cop movie with a real twist.
If I look tired at the end of the day, it’s because I just spent eight solid hours looking busy.

WILL HELP! (BARGAIN WILL WRITING) The ‘phone lines at Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland have been buzzing over the last few weeks, with significant numbers of older people wanting to find out more about the Will Writing Promotion organised by the Charity. Twenty four offices of local solicitors have kindly agreed to reduce their Will Writing charge to £35 + VAT for a single uncomplicated Will, but the offer runs only until the end of October. Commenting the Executive Director of the local Age UK, Mr Anthony Donovan, said: “I am delighted that so many people have responded to the promotion. Many older people have never been to a solicitor before, with some feeling intimidated at the prospect. The special offer which saves at least £100 has acted as an incentive and given many people the confidence they have needed to put their affairs in order – ensuring that those who will benefit from their estate are the people they most care for. Some have even been kind enough to include legacies to our charity – so vital to maintain our services though there is no pressure to do so.” Anyone wishing to take advantage of the Will Writing Promotion should contact Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland to find out the names of the Solicitors participating in the scheme in their local area on 0116 2992233. www.ageuk.org.uk/leics
