Local Charity Appeals for New Home for Big Blue Playbus! MRC Community Action, based at The Marlene Reid Centre in Coalville is appealing for a new home for the Big Blue Playbus. The double decker, which is used to support local families in Coalville and the surrounding area, needs a secure parking place within a five mile radius of The Marlene Reid Centre on Belvoir Road. Lesley Massey, Children & Families Service Manager said “Our Big Blue Playbus plays an important part in providing support to local families by providing access to many different services in this area” Lesley added “We have been providing services to the local community for more than thirty years and really hope someone can offer us a secure space to park the bus”. The Big Blue Playbus is a converted double decker with the lower deck offering a child friendly play environment, whilst adults can access training on the upper deck. Children under five years of age, with their parents or carers, can access the Playbus free of charge. Toys and equipment can also be loaned through the Playbus for up to four weeks at a time. Additional services include confidential Employment Advice and information on the services that MRC Community Action can offer. If you have a space which you could offer to MRC Community Action please call Lesley on 01530 510515 or email lmassey@mrc.uk.net. A secure parking space is needed as soon as possible for the bus.

No evictions bedroom tax campaign. The local campaign against the bedroom tax continues in Coalville. A public meeting was held on Saturday 18th May at Agar Nook Community Centre to debate the issue. At the meeting, which was well attended it was unanimously agreed that the campaign will focus on demanding social housing landlords adopt a “no eviction” policies when rent arrears are related to bedroom tax. Over 200 people have already signed the petition asking for “no evictions” which was launched by Councillor Nick Clarke and the Labour Group at NWLeics District Council a few weeks ago. Recent tragic events reported in the national media where Stephanie Bottrill, a Grandmother from Solihull deliberately stepped into the path of a lorry on the M6 and was killed instantly, because of worries about the bedroom tax have kept the controversial policy high on the national agenda. Councillor Nick Clarke, who is leading the local campaign said at the meeting; “Anyone who says why bother campaigning against the unfair bedroom tax or anyone who says we can’t change anything, I say it is our duty to try. We must try for the sake of people like Stephanie Bottrill, if nothing else.” At the meeting there was some lively debate where residents shared their stories and opinions, there was also advice given about benefits. It was learnt that a number of decisions have been reversed where tenant’s housing benefit had originally been reduced due to the bedroom tax. Councillor Dave De Lacy, who chaired the meeting said; “I believe original rulings for some tenants on the bedroom tax that have been overturned is as a direct result of our campaign.” Anyone who is affected by the bedroom tax and would like to get involved in the campaign should contact Councillor Nick Clarke on 07891073391, email nobedroomtax@gmail.com or visit the facebook page – Facebook/Coalville against the bedroom tax The “no evictions” petition can be signed on line at http://minutes.nwleics.gov.uk:81/elps/home

Local Street Lighting The long summer evenings encourage us out for a pleasant stroll. We leave our windows open to let in the air. We stop worrying about the dark streets and the burglars who might be loitering in the shadows. The fear of crime is not always logical. Opportunistic thieves love a nice warm afternoon when they can sneak in through an open window. The County Council’s ‘part-night’ street lighting scheme caused alarm among many residents when, over the winter, the lights went out after midnight. The engineers came out to explain the evidence at a Highways Forum in Coalville. They said there shouldn’t be any increase in crime. Not everyone was impressed. Dr Terri Eynon, Coalville’s new County Councillor, says ‘People won’t be comfortable about this change until they have proof that it is safe. We know from previous studies that extra street lighting doesn’t actually reduce crime – all it does is reduce people’s fear.’ Where can people find the real facts about crime in their area? Have a look on www.police.uk. Enter your postcode, town or street name to get street-level maps and data about policing, and details of your local policing team and beat meetings. The Coalville neighbourhood policing team tell us that there were 108 crimes reported in February 2012. That was before the street-lighting change took place. In February 2013, after the lights went out, the crime rate actually went down to 80 crimes. We need to keep an eye on the detail but, so far the experiment seems to be working. If you are still concerned about street lighting or any other Highways issue, get in touch with customerservices@leics.gov.uk
Touch Rugby Comes to Coalville Coalville has been named as a regional centre for a new RFU Touch Rugby initiative. Organised by Coalville RFC and held at King Edward VII Science and Sports College, the O2 sponsored Touch Rugby sessions will be held weekly and are aimed at adults who are not actively involved in rugby. Coalville is one of only three O2 TouchBases in Leicestershire and is the only one in North West Leicestershire. Touch Rugby originated in Australia as a training game but has then grown into a worldwide sport. It is most popular in New Zealand, Australia and South Africa but is quickly growing in the UK and provides a great opportunity for women and men to have fun playing a non-contact version of rugby. The sessions will take place throughout the year on astroturf on a ‘turn up and play’ basis and are open to women and men aged 18 and over who want to keep fit in a sociable environment. No rugby experience is necessary as each session will be run by a Touch Rugby qualified coach and referee who will provide an introduction to the sport. The O2 Touch Rugby will cost £3 per session and will run every Tuesday from 2 July, 7-8pm. For further details contact Bonnie 07837 880594 or Paul 07817 356541 or see the Coalville RFC website.

Council’s Activ8 Scheme offers FREE activities for young people Three primary schools, Griffydam Primary, Moira Primary and Swannington Primary, have joined the District’ Council’s “Club Activ8” scheme bringing the total number of schools involved to 28. The scheme, which is aimed at young people and schools, works by awarding points, as a reward, for participating in physical education at school. These points can then be redeemed against a number of activities taking place at the District’s Leisure Centres including, Swimming and football. One of the schools, already benefiting from the scheme is Broom Leys Primary School. Their Headteacher, Robert Prior, spoke about the benefits the school was getting from being a member of the Club Activ8 Scheme. Robert said: “By being able to participate in a range of sporting activities at local leisure centres free of charge provides excellent value for money. Already, we are seeing large numbers of pupils using their Club Activ8 Points on a weekly basis and others saving up their points for holiday activities. This has led to greater participation in sport outside school hours and has increased levels of physical activity.” Councillor Alison Smith, North West Leicestershire District Council’s Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Community Services, said, “We know, from NHS statistics, that many children are in danger of becoming overweight or obese*. To help reduce these numbers across our District, we are working in partnership with North West Leicestershire Local Sports Alliance to ensure children at school have the opportunity to increase their levels of physical activity and well-being. By joining our “Club Activ8” scheme, young people can participate in a wide range of FREE activities which will benefit their health and enable them to become more physically active.” Young people who are involved in the scheme can spend their points at Hood Park, Hermitage and Measham Leisure Centres. All activities are provided free of charge by North West Leicestershire District Council. The District Council is inviting other schools to take part in the scheme. Further details can be obtained by contacting Gail Rushton on 01530 454735 for further details.

A spokesperson for the group said 'We have all been very busy trying to deliver straw to people to build their scarecrows and have heard of some dramatic suggestions including one family working on either Richard 3rd on horseback or the full range of The Muppets. For the first time, Grace Dieu Cricket Club (whose 150th anniversary is also this year) are taking part in building a scarecrow which will go on their pitch. They are promising to open their bar on the day and there will also be non-alcoholic refreshments, cakes etc. all day at the Methodist Chapel. We look forward to seeing as many people from the area as possible coming to the village to enjoy the festivities.'

Local Councillors keep up pressure on decent homes contractors. Greenhill Labour Councillors Ron Adams and Nick Clarke met with Council Officers and Councillor Roger Bayliss (Conservative portfolio holder for housing) recently. The meeting was arranged to help address some recent issues with contractors carrying out improvements to Council homes. It was agreed that it is vital that Council tenants in Greenhill and the rest of North West Leicestershire get the improvements to their homes done efficiently and to an excellent standard. Some problems with the standard of work and the customer service of the contractor were highlighted and reassurances were given by Council Officers that problems are being dealt with, and the vast majority of work has been done without issue. Councillor Adams said; “We are pleased that Council Officers have taken action to address the problems highlighted. The improvements to tenant’s homes is vital in order to bring homes up to the decent homes standard, and this work needs to be done to the highest standard with as little inconvenience to tenants as possible.” The decent homes work programme is now entering its second year and it is planned that the amount of homes to be improved will dramatically increase. Councillor Adams continued; “We will continue to closely monitor the situation as the programme of works is ramped up. Tenants should not be discouraged from allowing improvement works to be done, this is a great opportunity to see their homes improved.” Councillor Clarke added; “I would like to thank the Officers and Councillor Bayliss for meeting with us. It is important that we have cross party support and a consistent approach if tenants are to get the home improvements they deserve. I would encourage all tenants to contact their Resident Liaison Manager if they encounter any problems or their local Councillor if they are not satisfied with the response. I feel reassured that Officers are putting every effort in to rectify some initial problems.”

Hugglescote and Coalville W.I.
MRC Appealing for Helping Hands with Time to Spare Enjoy working with and helping local people? Free time on your hands? If the answer to both these questions is yes then MRC Community Action in Coalville needs you! Volunteer Drivers are in desperate need to drive mini buses for shopping trips and social outings as well as car drivers taking those without access to transport to important health related appointments.
May’s meeting of Hugglescote and Coalville W.I. saw us welcome the new County chairman Anne Allison. Ann came to talk to us about the annual ‘W.I. Resolution’ this year the resolution is ‘The Decline of Our High Streets and Town Centres’
Helping hands are also needed for The Attic charity shop on Belvoir Road which directly supports local people by raising funds to supply services to the local community. Sorting donations and helping in the shop are amongst a few of the jobs which need doingif you have any free time! Being a volunteer offers lots of flexibility – anyone can volunteer as much or as little time as they want, work on a regular basis or be as flexible as they need to be; any time on any day of the week would be very much appreciated. A volunteer driver working with The Marlene Reid Centre explained “I love knowing I am helping someone and it makes me realise that I might need some help one day – each time I volunteer I go home thinking I did something good and that makes is really worthwhile. The people we help are so appreciative and would be lost without this service”. Bev Cowley, Sales & Marketing Officer at The Marlene Reid Centre said “The Marlene Reid Centre always has a wide range of volunteering opportunities available to suit everyone’s skills, if there are people out there with time to spare we could really do with their help. Bev added “We are desperately short of volunteer drivers at the moment and the Community Transport services we provide are as busy as ever”. If you would like to find out more about the volunteering opportunities available at The Marlene Reid Centre, call 01530 510515, alternatively email info@mrc.uk.net or pop into reception. More information is also available at www.mrc.uk.net

We learnt that in 2012, more high street chains fell into insolvency than ever before. The net number of store closures in 2012 totalled 1779, a tenfold climb from 174 in 2011. The high street is often a community hub, and provides much more than merely a place to shop. Many older people and those without cars rely on the high street for their daily and weekly shop. When high street shops close, individuals are forced to travel to out of town shopping centres. The decrease in footfall leads to a vicious cycle of falling numbers of shoppers and shop closures. Most recently, a high profile review from retail expert Mary Portas looked at ways to reinvigorate high streets and generate investment. The retail industry as a whole is worth tens of billions of pounds; it generates direct and indirect employment opportunities, and attracts investment. Shopping on the high street and in town centres directs this investment in a beneficial way for the local community that high streets serve. After a short but lively debate the group unanimously voted to support the W.I. resolution to call on decision-makers to work collectively, at all levels, to help bring an end to the decline of our high streets and to ensure that high streets flourish and provide a focal point for local communities. This result will be taken by our representative to the AGM to be held in Cardiff on Saturday 1st June. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 18th June at the Methodist Church Hall on Station Hill in Hugglescote. The meeting starts at 7.30 and there will be a talk and display on Fair Trade Goods. Visitors are always welcome.

WHATS ON THIS MONTH Saturday 8th June 2013
Supporting the community to save lives Thousands of pounds have been invested by East Midlands Ambulance Service to purchase and install life-saving machines in the community to help save lives. In Coalville, North West Leicestershire District Council has agreed to have an Automated External Defibrillator (AEDs) available on their premises, making it accessible to local people. AEDs are used when someone has gone into cardiac arrest i.e. when the heart stops pumping blood around the body. The defibrillator gives the heart an electric shock to allow effective cardiac rhythm to be reestablished. The best conditions for defibrillation are present for only one to two minutes of someone going into cardiac arrest, with success rates decreasing from then at up to 20% per minute of delay.
Tony Barron (Male Artist)
Sarah-Jayne Parsons, EMAS community defibrillation officer for Leicestershire, Rutland and Northamptonshire said: “Nationally ambulance services are required to get to 75% of life-threatening emergencies within eight minutes of the call being picked up. However, when it comes to cardiac arrest, seconds count and the use of a defibrillator while our crews travel to the scene can save a life.
Saturday 15th June 2013
“We’re delighted that North West Leicestershire District Council, along with other organisations across the East Midlands, has agreed to be part of our new programme by allowing us to install the defibrillators at their properties.

“The defibrillators are stored in bright yellow cabinets which clearly state that the emergency equipment is available there. They are registered with our Emergency Operations Centre so when we receive a 999 call reporting a cardiac arrest we can tell the caller where the defibrillator is located. The life-saving machines can be used by anyone who witnesses an arrest as the machine gives clear instructions on what to do.” Councillor Alison Smith, North West Leicestershire District Council’s Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Community Services said “We are delighted that East Midlands Ambulance Service has chosen to install this vital piece of life-saving equipment at the Council offices. This now means that vital, emergency treatment can be administered straight away if needed which will save more lives.” EMAS is investing £120,000 and installing 127 defibrillators in strategic places across the East Midlands. AEDs are most useful in rural communities with poor road networks or areas with traffic congestion, and places where large crowds gather such as sporting venues. The service is also planning to increase the number of Community First Responder (CFR) groups by ten per cent every year for the next three years. CFRs are trained by EMAS and sent to 999 calls at the same time as our ambulances and as they are based in their communities they can begin essential treatment such as CPR until EMAS’ clinicians arrive (see http://www.emas.nhs.uk/get-involved/cfr/ for details). In addition to the AED investment, EMAS is providing free Emergency Life Saving Skills courses to its local community, enabling people to know what to do in an emergency such as cardiac arrest, choking and severe bleeding. Information on future dates and venues including Leicestershire and details on how to book a place can be found on the EMAS website at http://www.emas.nhs.uk/get-involved/upcoming-events/

New Cabinet Members announced for North West Leicestershire District Council
Coalville & District Relief in Sickness Fund.
North West Leicestershire District Council’s new Cabinet Members were announced at the authority’s Annual Council meeting on 21 May 2013. The full list of Portfolio Holders within the Cabinet is below:-
The fund came about as a result of fund raising made in the Coalville area between the two world wars. The aim of the fund raising was to build a hospital in Coalville. This of course never came about immediately and the fund was forgotten about for many years. Interest in the fund surfaced about 30 years ago and the Charity Commission declared that the fund must remain intact and the income from it used to help residents of Coalville who were facing financial problems brought about through sickness. I must stress that our ability to assist is limited to finance the purchase of special equipment or sundries related to their illness and not for the payment of household bills or debts. It was further stipulated that the recipients must live in the old Coalville Urban District, where the money was raised, and not the new North West Leicestershire district.
Leader of the Council: Councillor Richard Blunt Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Community Services: Councillor Alison Smith Portfolio Holder for Corporate Services: Councillor Nicholas Rushton Portfolio Holder for Housing: Councillor Roger Bayliss Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and Planning: Councillor Trevor Pendleton Portfolio Holder for Business: Councillor Tony Gillard Councillor Richard Blunt, Leader of North West Leicestershire District Council, said: “In recognition of the importance of the business community, which has been one of the Council’s priorities over the past three years, I am delighted to have Councillor Tony Gillard join my Cabinet as Portfolio Holder for Business. His experience and new ideas will stand this authority in good stead as we continue to deliver the best we can to the residents of North West Leicestershire”. Councillor Tony Gillard has represented the Whitwick ward since May 2007. Councillor Tony Gillard, Portfolio Holder for Business said: “I will be responsible for engaging with local businesses with an emphasis on bringing investment into the District and I look forward to the challenges and the opportunities that will come with this appointment”. For more information about your local Councillors visit www.nwleics.gov.uk
Ibstock Community College Kayaking, gorge walking and mountain climbing were just some of the challenges facing Year 9 students from Ibstock Community College on a five-day visit to Aberglaslyn Hall in Wales. Forty students made the journey, where they walked for miles through scenic Welsh countryside, cooked their own meals over a camp fire and even slept in a forest shelter. Student Sam Wheeler said: "I found Aberglaslyn a fantastic experience. I really hope that students in future years get the chance to visit this beautiful area of Snowdonia, the hall itself, and to take part in some brilliant activities. It is an experience I would gladly repeat."
The amount of income is quite small and we are not allowed to make donations to national charities, for example Cancer Relief. Normally we do not fund the whole amount that the claimant needs, we usually ask for a donation from the individual or other charities who contribute to the total cost. Unfortunatley we do not reach the people who could benefit from our fund through word of mouth alone. In the past we have contacted local doctors surgeries to advise them of our fund but contacts get lost as people change career paths. We are aware that publicity may backfire! we could end up receiving more requests than we can support and that some requests will fall outside of our remit. Many thanks and kind regards Stuart Johnson, Chairman, Coalville & District Relief in Sickness Fund.
