Grass Verges and Pavement Parking Liberal Democrat County Councillor Michael Wyatt, blasted North West Leicestershire District Council at the last highway forum meeting for continuing to allow Council vehicles, and contractors to park on pavements and grass verges, when at the same time leading a campaign to convince residents to stop parking illegally by parking on pavements and grass verges in the local area after many local residents complained about the state of our grass verges, and not being able to use the footpaths due to inconsiderate drivers. Parking on the grass verges is also a major problem due to the grass cutters not being able to cut the grass due to a vehicle parked on the grass verge, which as it happened on a number of occasions. Cllr Michael Wyatt said, "At the meeting I produced clear evidence that the Council are nothing but hypocrites. Nearly everyday I saw for myself council wagons and council contractors breaking the law. On several occasions the Council apologised and assured me it will not happen again but within minutes I produced yet more council vehicles and contractors ignoring the Council's instructions not to park on grass verges or pavements. In one incident a local resident was verbally abused for asking the contractor to move his vehicle so she could get by on the pavement. In this incident the Council contractor removed the worker from the Estate until a full investigation had taken place. I cannot see how anyone can take this council serious when they cannot even get their own workers and contractors to follow the rules. In my opinion someone needs to take responsibility or the council will continue to look ridiculous. Residents are rightly furious that there is clearly one rule for them and another one for everyone else. This is nothing but pure hypocricy."

Nick Clarke Writes.... Council Leader ignores pleas of tenants over bedroom tax Over recent weeks a number of social housing tenants have written to Councillor Richard Blunt, the Leader of North West Leicestershire District Council asking that the Council takes a more sympathetic approach to tenants falling into rent arrears due to the bedroom tax, and considers adopting a “no evictions” policy. Councillor Blunt has failed to respond to tenants and chosen to ignore their pleas. Councillor Nick Clarke said; “I have been contacted by numerous tenants over the last few weeks that are falling behind with their rent since the bedroom tax was bought in, many of whom have disabilities. It is disappointing that Councillor Blunt hasn’t got the decency to at least acknowledge their correspondence.” Labour Party Councillors and activists were out meeting with, and listening to concerns of residents at Agar Nook Coalville on Sunday 21st July. They collected a number of signatures for their petition, which asks social housing landlords to adopt a “no evictions” policy when related to bedroom tax. At the same time as many residents of the district are suffering hardship Councillor Blunt has been overseeing a planning application on a piece of land he owns off Melbourne Road Newbold Coleorton. His proposals include opening a Clay Pigeon shooting range. Councillor Ron Adams who spoke to a number of residents on Sunday said; “It is important to get out and meet with residents, especially when times are hard. It seems to me that the leadership at NWLeics District Council are completely out of touch with the residents of the district.” If you are a social housing tenant affected by the bedroom tax contact Councillor Nick Clarke on 01530 452057 or 07891073391 or visit the facebook page “Coalville against the bedroom tax”

HOSPICE HOPE FUNDRAISER
The local charity Hospice Hope, enjoyed a surprise windfall when a cheque for £195.00 was presented to the organisers last week. Measham resident, Martin Hamm, who celebrated a birthday on 20th July with family and friends, requested donations to this worthwhile charity, in lieu of personal gifts. The party was held at Martin’s home and guests were treated to live music from Joel Wildgoose and Ben, who performed various numbers to suit all tastes, along with Joel’s own compositions. “The party was a huge success and I am thrilled at the amount we raised”, said Martin.” It was hard work getting everything organised, but it really was worth it. We all had a great time and I’d like to thank everyone for joining me and my family and for being so generous with their donations”. The total amount raised for the charity, which helps those who are being treated for life changing illnesses, should reach in the region of £ 243.00 due to the addition of Gift Aid. Who is George Smith? Just off London Road, not far from Christ Church, a new housing development has a blue plaque and bears the name ‘George Smith Drive’. But who was George Smith and why does he matter? Newcomers to our town, who didn’t go to local schools, may not have heard of George Smith. Every Coalville child once studied the life of this great Victorian entrepreneur and philanthropist. Teachers liked the tale because it reminds their pupils how much harder life was before the children of working people actually went to school. Our local hero, George Smith, took over the Whitwick Brickworks in 1859. It was part of William Stenson’s mine, using the clay from the surface to make drain pipes for use in the Whitwick pit. Under George Smith’s management, the Whitwick Brickworks became famous for the quality of its fine ornamental bricks and tiles. It also became famous for something else. George was a Methodist and believed strongly in education. He had been born into a poor family and went to work at the age of 7 carrying huge lumps of clay in a Staffordshire tile factory. He was a bright lad and realised that if he could read and write he would be able to get a better job. So he worked overtime at night to pay a schoolmaster to teach him. When George became a factory manager himself, he was determined to put a stop to the exploitation of young children and women. He was not always popular locally. Some families didn’t see the point of education and wanted to send their children out to earn money instead. Thanks to George Smith’s tireless campaign, in 1871 a Bill went through Parliament that said ‘no female under the age of sixteen years and no child under the age of ten years shall be employed in the manufacture of bricks and tiles, not being ornamental tiles’. Coalville was a new town back in 1871, full of entrepreneurs like George Smith. Along with William Stenson, George Stephenson and John Ellis he put this corner of Leicestershire on the map. Thanks to the County Council’s ‘Green Plaque’ scheme local people now have a chance to show our pride in the Founders of Coalville. Cllr Terri Eynon says “Working with the Coalville Heritage Society, Friends of Snibston and local businesses, the County Council will be asking everyone to spot the buildings that need a Green Plaque to celebrate the great people who built Coalville. Look out for further details later in the year”. For further information contact: terrieynon@gmail.com
Timebanking in Leicestershire, put an hour in, get an hour out. Do you have some small jobs that need doing, but don't want to spend money on them? Want to help other people? Got some spare time on your hands once in a while? Want to get to know your neighbours better, make real friends and help build community spirit? Then the Timebank could be what you're looking for. A new project has been launched aimed at all members of the community. The Timebank is a modern day exchange system that can help you get jobs done without money. "Timebanks" work by people offering their skills in return for time credits, which they can spend when they need help with something. For example, you may mow somebody's lawn and in return you could get a yoga session. You could offer to meet someone for a cup of coffee and a chat and in return have someone teach you how to play guitar. For every hour that you put in you receive one time credit (one hour = one credit) that you then spend on getting things done for yourself. The skill or asset that you offer to other people can literally be anything so you may want to offer your driveway for someone to wash their car on or you may know how to play bowls or very simply you could offer a listening ear for an hour. Timebank members often report that it has changed their lives as it gives you an instant chance to make new friends and reduce isolation as well. Not just that but it allows you to showcase what you can do which can build confidence. It's great for both young and older people alike, because everyone has something to offer whether that's just talking and befriending or showing someone how to make a cake, it can be anything" Organisations and businesses are also members so if you're looking for work or to improve your CV Timebanking gives you the chance to do a transaction for a business, which ultimately could help you in your job search. You're making links with both your community and with organisations" To join or get more information please contact: James O’Flynn - 0116 305 9212

More Plots for Ellistown Allotment Site Ellistown allotment site on Midland Road is one of the few sites in the county that has space to create new allotment plots on a currently uncultivated area.
Local Car Club’s Show Success A local car club recently took first prize for the Best Club Stand at a classic car show. North Leicester MG Club’s red, white and blue bunting and banner-bedecked display was enough to secure the judges’ verdict at the Classic Car and Transport Show, on Sunday 21st July, held at Beaumanor Hall in Woodhouse.
Ellistown Allotment Garden Society (EAGS), who now manage the site on behalf of the Parish Council, has plans to open up this part of the site over the next few months for new plot holders. Barbara Weston, Secretary of the Allotment Society said “In 2008 some new plots were created and it was amazing how quickly the new tenants transformed the rough pasture into a vegetable patch. There are many benefits in allotment gardening including exercise in the open air instead of a stuffy gym! Also saving costs on buying fruit and vegetables, and it is a super activity for all the family to enjoy.”
The stand was a celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s coronation in June 1953, and the great British car marque, MG, so Union Jacks flew from the aerials or bonnets of each of the fifteen cars on show. A larger flag atop a twenty-foot pole pinpointed the position of the club’s display area from all over the showground.
There will be an Open Day on the site on Saturday 10th August from 2.00pm to 4.00pm, which will be an ideal time for anyone interested in a plot to come and have a look round and put their name on the waiting list.
Continuing the theme of the Queen’s reign, a coronation “street party” table formed the centrepiece of the display. The table was set out with cake, 1950s-style fish-paste sandwiches with a “dandelion and burdock” look-alike concoction to drink. Older club members gratefully accepted a slice of the cake towards the end of the overcast, yet warm afternoon, but passed on the fish paste sandwiches, as they probably had done back in 1953.
At the new community allotments in Greenhill bee hives have now been installed to provide locally honey, and an opportunity to help save the honey bee from dying out. County councillor Michael Wyatt said, "this is another great scheme for the local community. This new initiative will not only help the allotment holders but also local farmers and growers in the local area. Hopefully by next summer we will be able to produce our very own locally produced honey". All gardeners are welcome and light refreshments will be available, entry to the site is free and there is some limited parking. Children can ‘Hunt for their 5-a-day’, everyone can play ‘Garden Fork Quoits’, and judging will take place for EAGS members Best Plot Competition. Photos and further details about the site can be found on: www.ellistownallotment.co.uk
The years of MG manufacture covered by each of the cars exhibited was highlighted by a photograph of Her Majesty taken in the relevant year and displayed on the windscreens. Fourteen years from the 1950s through to 2002 were represented. Two of the MG BGTs on show served as display cabinets for around twenty pieces of 1953 Coronation memorabilia. Windows of the cars’ rear hatchback doors (which were innovative for the 1960s) allowed easy viewing of the items and ensured protection of the collectables from the day’s intermittent light rainfall. The display of fifteen cars was, rather fittingly, fronted by a red 1952 MG TD, a white 1967 MG BGT and a blue 2001 MG F. A selection of MG BGTs and MG Midgets together with single representatives of six other models filled the stand to capacity and provided talking points for the many visitors. An Austin A35, the club’s official support car and only non-MG, completed the display. After receiving the winner’s trophy from the show’s organisers, the club’s vice-chair, Chris Tideswell said, “This award is the result of a co-ordinated effort from all of the club members who brought their cars along for the day, loaned 1953 Coronation memorabilia, bunting and union flags, and set up the stand.” North Leicester MG Club meets at the Anchor Inn, Hathern on the third Wednesday of each month at 8:00 pm. Membership is drawn from all over north Leicestershire and beyond with residents of Charnwood, North West Leicestershire and Melton boroughs, together with several from Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, all regularly taking part in the club’s activities. Snibston 's summer fun for all ages With the long summer holiday now starting, there’s fun for all ages at Snibston Discovery Museum. Snibston has a wide range of activities from exhibitions, with such diverse themes as archaeology and swimwear, to family films at the Century Theatre. The swimwear exhibition is ‘Taking the Plunge’ which charts the development of the bathing costume from the modest attire of the 19th century, the structured glamour of the 1950s, the fabric technologies of competitive swimming and one of the latest developments – tan-through men’s shorts! The fun does not stop at Snibston, though, with Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre, Donington-le-Heath Museum and the county’s libraries and country parks all offering activities for all. Bosworth’s showpiece event is the spectacular reenactment weekend on August 17 and 18 with 15 per cent off all bookings made before the end of July. To book, call 01455 290429, purchase tickets online or find out more about the events, visit: Activities at Leicestershire’s country parks include the National Forest Wood Fair at Beacon Hill on August 26 which will have lots of children’s activities from eco art to green wood crafts. FILMREVIEW The Heat - 15
The Heat is a highly hilarious and totally nutty cop comedy from the director – and one of the stars - of Bridesmaids. Sarah Ashburn (Sandra Bullock) is a highachieving special agent who is, however, much disliked by her colleagues in the force. Paired with Shannon Mullins (Melissa McCarthy), a brutish, unprofessional and totally rude agent, the two are not looking like a particularly impressive team but they need to pull themselves together if they are going to catch a dangerous Russian mobster. The Heat introduces the whole new dream team of Bullock, McCarthy and director Feig.
Planes - U PLANES is a fully-charged adventure set high above the clouds. Dusty (Dane Cook) dreams of competing in the most exhilarating round-the-world aerial race in history. There are just two minor issues: he’s afraid of heights and he’s not built for racing. Despite his fears, and with a hefty dose of encouragement from his mentor, a seasoned naval aviator named Skipper (Stacey Keach), Dusty goes on to qualify, but will he overcome adversity and the attempts by the champ, Ripslinger (Roger Craig Smith), to put an end to his dreams? PLANES introduces an hilarious fleet of new characters sure to delight the entire family.

Hugglescote and Coalville W.I.
July saw us have our have first meting at our new venue in The Marlene Reid Centre on Belvoir Road Coalville. We welcomed Mrs Victoria Bacon who told us all about the fascinating world of Bach Flower Remedies. She began her talk by giving us a brief insight into the life of Edward Bach.
Dr Edward Bach was born in Mosley, his father owned a brass foundry and he wanted his son to go into the family business. Edward however wanted to train as a doctor and eventually his father agreed to let him go to London to study medicine. After qualifying as a doctor he set up a practice in Harley Street he later began using some homeopathic remedies helping injured service men in World War one. He realised stress can trigger illness so instead of focusing on illness he looked at emotional problems eventually concluding he could do no more with conventional medicines and what was needed was an holistic approach to ill health. He went to a remote area in Wales where he decided that the answer to helping people lay in nature. He developed various remedies using just thirty different flowers and plants. He tried the remedies out on himself, family and friends he found that combining certain flowers produced a very effective remedy. The best known flower remedy is the Rescue Remedy combination, which contains an equal amount of Rock Rose, Impatiens, Clematis, Star of Bethlehem and Cherry Plum. The product is aimed at treating stress, anxiety, and panic attacks, especially in emergencies. The remedies contain a very small amount of flower material in a 50:50 solution of brandy and water. Because the remedies are extremely diluted they do not have a characteristic scent or taste of the plant. Each remedy is used alone or in conjunction with other treatments, each flower is believed by Bach practitioners to impart specific qualities to the remedy. Not only do humans benefit from Bach flower remedies they are also used by some vets on pets and domestic animals. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 20th August at the Marlene Reid Centre. The meeting starts at 7.30 Paula Gretton will give a talk about The Life of Beatrix Potter. Visitors are always very welcome.

The Trustees and staff of Redgate Farm Animal Sanctuary are very grateful to be offered this space in the Coalville Eye magazine to talk about a very local and very busy animal charity, founded in 1986, and based between Coalville and Markfield on Shaw Lane, just off the A511. Redgate Farm has been looking after stray, abandoned and injured animals in North-West Leicestershire for 27 years. It also provides a local re-homing service so that as many animals as possible can find their forever home.
With the growing interest in animal rescue and pet re-homing centres, for example with Paul O’Grady’s marvellous TV programmes from Battersea Dogs’ and Cats’ Home, perhaps this is the right time to ask you to read about us, support our fundraising events, organise events for us, become a Friend of Redgate, or even better to come and visit our animals. Parking is a little bit restricted, but there is a lay-by right next to the Sanctuary entrance on the A511, or you could open the big red metal gates and come in and drive straight ahead into the manège. There are also two small car-parks on Billa Barra Lane (which runs along the side of the Sanctuary), which you could use and then walk down to our site. We are open every day of the year, except Christmas Day, from 10:00am – 4:00pm. Please don’t be put off by the ‘closed’ gates – they are not locked during opening hours. They are pulled to in order to be a “last line of defence” between the animals and the dual carriageway. During opening hours the gates can be opened by visitors, but please do close them behind you. There are currently 9 horses, 12 dogs, 20 cats, 15 kittens, 15 rabbits, 4 guinea pigs, a bull (Norman), a cow (Tia), 7 goats, 5 pigs, a flock of sheep, various aviary birds and some chickens, geese and ducks in Redgate’s care, but every day brings in new patients who need help straight away. The Sanctuary also works with local colleges and provides an ideal work experience placement for young people who want to work with animals or on the land. Another benefit is that people who cannot have a pet of their own can come along and spend some time with animals whenever they have an hour or so to spare. Redgate’s income is raised through its charity shop and local fund-raising and most of the cash raised is used for Vet’s bills, food and heating. (We only put animals to sleep as a last resort and then only for medical reasons on the advice on a Vet). Sanctuary/Re-homing telephone: 01530 243 295 Website: www.redgatefarmanimalsanctuary.co.uk Or follow us on Facebook - Registered Charity Number: 1036506 Please do come and see us!
Touch Rugby Starts at Coalville Coalville has seen the first few sessions of touch rugby in what is hoped will become a permanent fixture of the local sporting make-up. The RFU’s O2 Touch Rugby programme is being run by coaches from Coalville Rugby Club on the artificial pitch at King Edward VII Specialist Science and Sport College. Sessions are every Tuesday from 7.30-8.30pm and will continue throughout the year. The initiative is part of an RFU drive to get more people involved in rugby. Touch rugby is a great way to keep fit but is also sociable and very easy to pick up. “It’s gone really well so far. The women and men playing are a mixture of ages with varying degrees of rugby experience. The beauty of touch rugby is that it’s very simple so we’ve had some great games going on. It’s a very good workout and has proven an ideal way to keep fit in a social setting,” commented Touch Rugby Coach Mark Davis. Coalville is currently the only permanent touch rugby base in Leicestershire and will be a forerunner in the development of the sport. If interest continues to increase it is hoped that a team will be created that will be able to start entering tournaments. The sessions are run on a turn up and play basis and cost £3. For more information go to RFU.com/o2Touch.

Lady Drivers In The Hot Seat! The Fire Fighters Charity and British Red Cross are once again giving women throughout the country the unique opportunity to drive weird and wonderful vehicles at the Leicestershire annual Ladies Driving Challenge! On 13 October 2013, The Fire Fighters Charity and British Red Cross will visit Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground, Near Lutterworth, Leicestershire, to give women the chance to drive a variety of large and unusual vehicles in the ‘Ladies Driving Challenge’. Participants will be able to try their hand at manoeuvring a range of different vehicles such as fire engines, steam engines, trucks, combine harvesters and tractors, all kindly donated by local organisations. Mary Morgan, Senior Community Fundraiser at British Red Cross said, “The Ladies Driving Challenge promises to be an exciting day, with the chance to operate a fantastic collection of vehicles often associated with male drivers. Other types of driving events can be uncomfortably competitive with an emphasis on speed, and this has been known to put off some women. The Women-only Challenge is much more relaxed with the focus on handling vehicles with skill and enjoying new experiences, as well as raising money for a good cause. The event is always very popular and we expect places to fill early so we urge participants to register as early as possible and guarantee their place.” The challenge is to drive a wide variety of weird and wonderful vehicles! Each Ladies Driving Challenge is unique, but at any given event you can look forward to driving at least four or five different types of vehicle. Expert tuition throughout ensures you enjoy the special day to the full. All women over the age of 17 with a full driving licence are welcome to join in the fun during either the morning or afternoon sessions. Registration costs £10 and entrants are asked to raise a minimum of £90 in sponsorship. All proceeds from the event will be split evenly between The Fire Fighters Charity and British Red Cross. Laura Harden, Regional Fundraising Officer at The Fire Fighters Charity explained, “Behind the fun, there is a very serious message that we are supporting those heroic fire fighters who risk their lives for us. When they run into a burning building, there is always the very real risk of serious injury, and when the worst happens not only fire fighters suffer, but also their families. The Fire Fighters Charity helps support injured fire fighters, both physically and emotionally, enabling them to return to work faster. Unbelievably, the Charity receives no government funding and relies entirely from beneficiary and public donations”. The annual event last year raised around £13,000 to support both The Fire Fighters Charity the official organisation which exists for fire fighters during their times of need and assists thousands of injured individuals every year by providing pioneering treatment and support services and British Red Cross who supported over 40,000 people in the local area in 2012 including valued support to the Fire and Rescue services by way of their Fire and Emergency Support Service. The Ladies Driving Challenge is the perfect opportunity to do something different for the day with friends and family members. To take part, entrants should register online at: www.firefighterscharity.org.uk/ldc Mary Morgan mmorgan@redcross.org.uk Or call 0116 271 6258.
