LITTLE DRAGON’S DEN NOW OPENS ON SATURDAYS! If you’re stuck for something to do on a Saturday morning and don’t want to break the bank during these cold winter months why not pop into Little Dragon’s Den Soft Play at The Marlene Reid Centre on Saturday morning from 9am – 1pm.

The children can have fun on the large bouncy castle and enjoy the masses of soft play equipment and toys while you enjoy a nice warm cuppa and read the weekend newspapers. LATEST FUNDING CUT IMPACTS LOCAL COMMUNITY SERVICES MRC Community Action based at The Marlene Reid Centre in Coalville took another blow with funding cuts of £83,000 for their Training & Support, Welfare Rights and REACT Furniture Reuse Project.

Despite the services being much needed and well used the local government cuts have tightened their purse strings once more affecting the local charity based in Coalville which has provided services to North West Leicestershire and the surrounding areas for more than 25 years.

Dave Ahlquist, Chief Officer said “We now have a long line of cuts and need to attempt to bridge the gap the latest funding cut has made by being creative and coming up with new initiatives to provide the services we know our local community needs.” Dave added “In 2013 the over 60’s concessions for Community Transport were also taken away. Fortunately our customers value the service we provide taking them shopping and on days out as well as to important

health related appointments so we have been able to continue to provide much of this service with their support. The funding cut on the training and support, welfare rights and furniture re-use service is large and we now have difficult times ahead trying to continue to provide the services without funding”.

Lorraine Harrison, Re-Use & Training Service Manager said “This recent funding cut will have a big impact on the community and services including home visits to disabled people in the community to discuss welfare rights will now stop.”

Lorraine added “MRC brought in trainees and supported them back into education and employment and without this funding we will no longer be able to provide this service which is a real shame.”

U-TURN ON “GREEN BIN TAX”

North West Leicestershire District Council have announced that they are going to bin a proposal to charge up to £30 a year to have your garden waste collected. The announcement from the Conservative administration also said that they have decided not to go ahead with other planned measures such as increased car parking charges and an increase to the Council Tax. Labour group leader Councillor Tom Neilson said, "we welcome the changes to the Conservative budget proposals announced yesterday and I look forward to seeing the details and commenting further when they are available. However it is important that we are not complacent about the financial challenge that still faces the Council and we would want to ensure that where money is available it is focused on helping the most vulnerable.

"As for the 'Green Bin Tax' Labour has opposed the proposal from the start and we have been working very hard to discredit it and get the proposal removed, I am delighted we have managed to get the Tories to see sense at the 11th hour." Councillor Dave De Lacy, Labour spokesman for the Environment welcomed the removal of charges for collecting green waste.

The green bin tax would have reduced recycling significantly, would have been likely to increase flytipping and the hiding of green waste in the ordinary household bins. Income to the council for recycling would have reduced significantly and costs for the Council for landfill and clearing flytipping could have increased. It was a really very bad idea.”

Wilson Homes have finally submitted their planning application for 79 new houses off Agar Nook Lane to the District Council planning Authority who will make the final decision if to allow this site to be developed. The site off Agar Lane was previously owned by East Midlands Housing Association.

No: 14/00050/FULM Local Cllr Michael Wyatt said, “I urge everyone to take a look at the plans, which have been altered to take into account local residents concerns, epscially the need for additional bungalows, and the need for additional road calming measure along Greenhill Road, which is a real concerns and danger to our local residents and children. BREATHEEASY NORTH WEST LEICS: GROUP NEWS Breathe Easy is the support network of the British Lung Foundation, and is part of the charity. There are now over 200 Breath Easy groups throughout the UK. It has become an integral part of the support network for people affected by lung disease. The aim of our small group is to provide a network of friends, advisers, events and activities that support and empower people who suffer from the various types of lung disease.

79 NEW HOUSES PROPOSED FOR AGAR NOOK LANE

The main focus of all Breathe Easy groups is a monthly meeting, which in our case is held on the second Wednesday of the month at 2.00PM at the Coalville Labour Club on Bridge Road, Coalville.

Invited speakers provide information about living with lung conditions, treatments and medications etc: but we also have other activities such as meals and trips out, and the occasional bingo session or beetle drive. Our aim is to make our programme of activities varied and interesting for all.

People who are interested in coming along to one of our meetings can just drop in to see what we are all about, or better still, they can ring Eunice on 07790 278435 for more information.

We also hold exercise classes each Thursday afternoon at 3.00PM. at the same venue as above, each session lasts for just 1 hour and is led a fully accredited instructor who is specially trained to teach you the right way to exercise at a level that will help you improve.

SNIBSTON MUSEUM CLOSURE MOVES A STEP CLOSER

I’m sad to see that Tory run Leicestershire County Council have moved a step closer to closing Snibston Discovery Park with confirmation of their budget proposals.

The much used museum at Snibston will be closed, with only the pit head remaining.

The closure would happen despite the fantastic work of the Friends of Snibston; who collected over 8,000 signatures of support for the site.

Additionally, Tory District Councillors, the Lib Dem’s Michael Wyatt and local Independent Councillor voted together to water down a Labour motion of support for Snibston. Showing that together they’re happy to see the Discovery Museum gone forever.

All of this is sad news for Coalville. I believe we must be ambitious for Coalville, seeking to improve the town. Demolishing

Snibston Discovery Museum for new houses goes directly against that. We need more fantastic places for people to visit in Coalville, not less. The closure will have a significant impact, particularly on the footfall we badly need.

The Friends of Snibston believe there can be a bright future for the Museum. They are working with local businesses to build the kind of robust business plan the Council have never sought to do. We know that Snibston can survive and can be viable going forward. Coalville’s businesses stand 100% behind the museum, along with the local community. I’m 100% behind the Friends of Snibston and have been delighted, along with local Labour Councillors, to show my support for the campaign.

Labour will always be ambitious for Coalville and will always defend the full offer at Snibston. The Council still has time to change course and save Snibston,

I hope the Tories see sense and protect this valuable asset for Coalville before it is gone forever.

JAMIE VISITS COALVILLE FOOD BANK As Labour’s Parliamentary candidate I visited Coalville’s food bank, based at the New Life Church, this month.

Nearly 600 people have visited the food bank since its creation in April 2013, with the majority being referred after delays or problems in benefit payments. The work done by Tim and the volunteers at the food bank is fantastic. It always touches me to see people devoting time and energy to help others in need.

The Trussell Trust, the parent organisation to the Coalville food bank, has reported that between April and September last year 350,000 people, 120,000 of them children, received at least three days’ emergency food from one of their food banks – a threefold increase since 2009-10.

Many of the people using food banks are hard working families struggling to make ends meet in Britain’s cost of living crisis. According to Which? food prices have risen 12.6% above inflation in the past six years. In addition rising energy prices and stagnating wages has meant people are worse off.

That’s why Labour has made tackling our cost of living crisis the top priority. That’s why Labour will: · Freezing energy prices while we regulate the market better, · Tackling the growing number of zero hours contracts that provide people with no job security, · Promote the living wage by rewarding businesses that pay, · Reverse the Bedroom Tax, which the Trussell Trust has reported as a major reason behind the increase in food bank usage.

VOTER REGISTRATION DAY TAKE ACTION & REGISTER TO VOTE On the 5th of February 1832, the Great Reform Act introduced voter registration for the very first time. Then, the number of eligible voters in a borough varied from six to 12,000, with the selection of some Members of Parliament controlled by one person. We have come a long way since then, but there is still much more we can do.

In 2010, only 44% of 18- to 24-year-olds voted, while 76% of those aged 65 and over cast their vote. At the moment, only half of all young people are registered to vote. Certain groups are disproportionately underrepresented. Only 56% of people living in private rented homes are registered. Nearly half of those not registered to vote mistakenly believe that they are.

We must try and do better. The electoral register performs a hugely important civic function. You can only vote, and choose the politicians who represent you, if you are on the register. It also ensures citizens are properly counted for the drawing of political boundaries – by ward and constituency – meaning the voice of North West Leicestershire is heard. It can also help you access mortgages and improve your credit score.

From next year, each individual will have to register, rather than the traditional method of a household survey. So following voter registration day on 5th February make sure you register and have a voice, visit aboutmyvote.co.uk.

As you are aware Open Box Promotions, home of Your Local and Community Eye magazines, have been taking part in the Big Business Challenge and was competing against other business’ to try and raise as much money as possible for DLR Air Ambulance in just a few weeks!

ebruary is my favourite time to plan the gardening year ahead. The weather may be cold & wet, but it’s a perfect opportunity to thumb through seed catalogues and books for inspiration. With a cup of coffee to hand I love to sit back and plan what I’ll be growing in my garden and what I’ll include in my clients gardens too.

I’m plant and garden obsessed! I’m a Garden Designer, I’ve been a professional Plant Grower at local nurseries for 15 years and I’m the Manager of a community grower’s project in Leicester. Planning ahead is crucial if I’m going to spend time in my own garden too!

So what will I grow this year? Well the ground is really wet at the moment so I’ll delay planting shrubs and perennials until March, but I will be starting off seeds and bulbs soon. Our local nurseries, garden centres (and DIY stores) now have a range of vegetable seed and seed potatoes to entice us to ‘grow our own’ and bulbs like the colourful Dahlia and Lily too.

These shiny packets of loveliness are pretty cheap. I have been known to come home with armfuls, many of which I don’t get around to planting or I lose enthusiasm for later in the year! So when it comes to growing veggies in my garden this year, I’ll be choosing varieties that I know I’m sure to eat having nurtured them through to harvest time. I’ll also include some varieties destined for the Courtyard Kitchen Garden I’ll be developing at the White Peacock Restaurant in Leicester. You can see how this project progresses on my website www.belgrierson.co.uk So on my shopping list for 2014 are Salad Potatoes, Purple Sprouting Broccoli, Salad leaves, French & Runner Beans, Mangetout, Squashes, Beetroot, Tomatoes, Chilli’s and Herbs. I usually struggle to find a use for the more weird and wacky varieties, so I’ve struck those off the list and I don’t spend time cosseting onions, carrots & celery when the farmers do it so well.

I’m always tempted to pick up a few colourful packs of Dahlia and Lily bulbs along with my veg seeds. I’m never sure at the time where I’ll plant them so they inevitable go in to pots or the veg plot. The pots come in useful later in the year adding colour to the patio or the front porch.

With my list in hand I’ll be visiting my local nursery & store to see what they have to offer and for those I can’t find there, I’ll buy online from one of the companies that sell small packets of unusual varieties.

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR IN YOUR LOCAL NURSERY, GARDEN CENTRE, GARDEN STORE IN FEBRUARY I can recommend ‘Nicola’, ‘Belle de Fontenay’ and ‘Pink Fir Apple’ seed potatoes which all did fantastically well in my garden last year. Runner Bean ‘Moonlight’ is actually a Runner x French cross with the look and taste of a Runner Bean but the prolific cropping of a French Bean. Squash ‘Red Kuri’ will grow pretty much anywhere and produces tasty red Squash for roasting with garlic & chilli in the Autumn & Winter months. Beetroot ‘Cylindra’ is a favourite and I now mix the seed up with a golden variety too to give more interest. I’ve got a line of it the garden now that I’m still harvesting.

Tomato ‘Cuore di Bue’ is a lovely beefsteak variety with hardly any seeds & great for salads. The Dahlia Bishop series is a real winner, flowering for months and Lily Star Gazer is fantastic for summer fragrance.

Next month I’ll be looking at preparing new borders and reinvigorate existing areas in the garden to give colour throughout the year. Spring will be in the air so there’ll be a range of bulbs and heathers available at the nurseries & garden centres perfect for adding the early season splash of colour.

MEDIEVAL MARVELS ARE UNVEILED

Creative students at Ibstock Community College have made models, films and even a rat-shaped cake, as part of a Medieval research project. The Year 7 history students were asked to research an aspect of Medieval history of their choice - and to be as creative as they liked. Students also had to produce an accompanying Powerpoint presentation, to explain their work to the class.

Teacher Kevin Norman said: "I was very impressed with the overall standard of work - it was much better than in previous years, and there definitely seemed to have been quite a surge in the amount of cooking and model making.” For entertainment value and creative culinary skill, the teachers gave a commendation to Tom Gent who surprised everyone with his Black Death rat cake.

There was also a special mention for Christopher Trainor who produced a Medieval model village on a scale of 1:200 scale. His accompanying Powerpoint included photographs of the buildings he had made, captured at different angles at different times of the day. To complete the illusion, he had lit the model from different angles to represent the moving sun, taking into account that the church should face east!

COALVILLE BECOME KIDS FIRST RUGBY CLUB

Coalville RFC has become the first club in Leicestershire to be called a ‘Kids First’ rugby club as part of a new RFU initiative that wants to put children at the heart of its development programme.

The award forms part of England Rugby’s grassroots programme and is aimed at taking advantage of the build up to the Rugby World Cup in 2015. Ruckley, England’s world cup mascot, is the face of the Kids First initiative and is set to appear prominently as the build-up gains momentum.

Coalville’s mini and junior section was selected because of its record in ensuring that the needs of children are always put first.

Managers and coaches recently underwent training from Darren Gourley, the RFU’s Player Development Officer, which was partly classroom and practical based. The course involved the creation of a club manifesto, the planning and implementation of player development pathways and making sure that children’s enjoyment is always fundamental to the training and playing at Coalville.

Children will receive a sticker book which they complete as they work towards different aspects of their development.

‘It’s a great honour to be chosen to become a Kids First club.

We got some great feedback from our training and I know that coaches are itching to use the Kids First resources in their games and training sessions. A lot of hard work has been put in to get us to where we are today but the future looks even better with the needs of the children placed firmly at the heart of our philosophy,’ commented Martin Lester the Mini Coordinator at Coalville.

MATHS AND SCIENCE SKILLS TESTED AT BRADGATE PARK

Bradgate Park was the setting for students from Ibstock Community College to test their knowledge of maths and science.

Year 8 students spent an afternoon at the country park, using their mathematical skills to calculate the park's area.

As part of their science studies, they tested the pH value of the water in the brook, recording their findings for data analysis back in the classroom later. Students also got the chance to interview one of the park’s gamekeepers about his job role. Teacher Tracy Allen said: “The visit to Bradgate Park was a really useful opportunity for students to test the mathematical and science skills they have learned in lessons.

“From a careers point of view, it was also interesting for the students to be able to talk to the gamekeeper who spoke to them about the value of volunteering and work experience, as well as his role.” The visit was part of the college’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) programme which includes a module on Animal Care and Land Management.

OLYMPIC STAR RETURNS TO SCHOOL

HELEN QUALIFIES FOR ROTARY YOUNG MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR COMPETITION Helen Edwards, a Year 9 student at Ivanhoe College, has qualified for a place in the county semi-finals of the Rotary Young Musician of the Year competition. Her musical French horn performance of “En Irlande” stunned judges at Ashby School last week as she competed against 20 other very talented musicians; some at A-Level standard. One onlooker said “She played the French Horn amazingly. She deserved to win!”

Helen said “I started to learn the French Horn when I was 7 years old. I was really nervous on the evening but glad I won as I’d love to pursue a career in music.” The Rotary Young Musician of the Year competition provides a stage for musical talent to shine in regional competitions before the grand final itself. We wish Helen all the best in her next performance at the county semi-final next Saturday at Melton Mowbray.

Former Olympic badminton player Anthony Clark has been helping to inspire the young sportsmen and women of the future, during a return visit to Ibstock Community College. Anthony, who represented Great Britain at two Olympic Games, was in school as part of Sky Sports Living for Sports mentor scheme.

IVANHOE COLLEGE ATHLETES VICTORIOUS AT NWL INDOOR ATHLETICS

During his visit, he talked to Year 7 students about his career, before answering their questions on sport. Anthony then helped Year 9 Sports Leaders to plan a multi-skills festival for local primary school children which will take place next month. He also coached members of the college's winning badminton team who are currently regional champions, and gave them guidelines for mentoring other students.

Anthony said: "I believe that everyone has a talent, although some people may not know themselves what it is. I learnt so much from older players throughout my career and it is an honour for me to be able to pass on my knowledge and experience to the next generation of young sportsmen and women. It would make me very proud to witness these young people develop and hopefully find a sport that they love.”

This was the second consecutive year that Anthony had visited the college in his role as Sky Sports mentor. Anthony will return to ICC in February to be interrogated by English students at a mock press conference, and to allow a group of scientists to analyse his performance during a smash shot!

A great victory last Thursday for the Ivanhoe College athletes who successfully took part in the North West Leicestershire Sports Hall Athletics at Castle rock. Georgina Howick, PE teacher, said “It was great fun and a brilliant effort from all! Our girls won overall exceeding some of their personal best results, and winning themselves a place in the Leicester-shire and Rutland school games on the 17th March. The boys showed shire determination, coming a very close second even with one man down, resulting in having to pull out of 3 events. However this did not stop their competitive spirit building up the points. Resulting in overall on points Ivanhoe girls and boys bringing home the trophy.”

COALVILLE AIR CADET OFF TO ASCENSION ISLAND Cadet Sergeant Josh Flude has been chosen to go to Ascension Island. Cadet Sergeant Flude has been chosen to go on annual camp to Ascension Island. This is the first time cadets have attended camp there. There are only 12 cadets going on camp from South and East Midlands Wing of the Air Training Corps. The lucky cadets have been chosen from the 29 squadrons in the wing.

A MODEL PERFORMANCE BY GEOGRAPHERS Caves, arches, stacks and stumps were some of the geographical features recreated by Year 8 students for their Geography Coasts modelling project at Ibstock Community College. Having studied coastal erosion and weathering in class and at home, the students were tasked with creating a labelled model, animation or movie that described and explained the erosion of a headland to form caves, arches, stacks and stumps.

To achieve the best marks, they needed to explain and link the types of wave erosion and weathering to show how these processes work together to change our coast line. To help the students, resources were made available on the college website. The students were given several weeks to complete the tasks, but had to work independently using all the resources that were available. Teacher Steve Howard said: "Students submitted some superbly constructed models and two well executed animations showing high levels of creativity and good use of technology. They have certainly thrown down the gauntlet to future Year 8 classes."

IT’S A STITCH-UP! Textiles students who are members of Ibstock Community College's ‘Project Catwalk’ have been putting the finishing touches to their first clothing project. The Year 9 students have been learning the art of tie dye to make their own customised pyjama shorts.

Textiles teacher Kim Burton said: “It is quite a challenging project but by now the students are confident with the sewing machine, and they know how patterns fit together. It helps to prepare them for what they will have to do at GCSE.” Last term, the students made Christmas stockings and festive decorations which were sold at the college’s Christmas fair. They have also learned more in depth sewing techniques such as putting in a zip. Using their skills, some of the students have been helping to create costumes for the college’s production of ‘Blackadder through the Ages’. Year 9 students can choose 'Project Catwalk' from a list of specialism subjects, for one afternoon a week.

FIRST AID FOR SPORTS LEADERS Sports leaders have been learning how to deal with medical emergencies on the sports field, including unconsciousness, allergic reactions and incidents of choking. Lewis McKenzie, a project worker from the British Red Cross, spent an afternoon teaching students some basic, life-saving techniques.

Others topics covered included sprains and strains, bleeding, burns and diabetes. Students learned how to treat a choking sportsperson, put an injured player in the recovery position and administer CPR. Mr McKenzie, who specialises in community-based first aid, said: "Simple procedures like this can be the difference between life and death. It is important that young people know what to do because it may be too late if you wait for the ambulance." Year 9 students can choose to follow the Sports Leaders course as part of the Ibstock college's specialisms programme.
