2014 RESOLUTIONS CATALYST FOR DIVORCE, CLAIMS COALVILLE LAW EXPERTS A fresh start for a new year will prove the reason for many leaving their spouses, claims Coalville’s leading family lawyer. Kathryn Hicklin, head of family law at QualitySolicitors Mander Cruickshank said “New Year’s resolutions will lead to many seeing solicitors in the early months of 2014. There is a growing trend for many years now of increased post-Christmas break-ups where relationships which have become unworkable and the couples go their separate ways as part of a resolution. Whilst the end of a relationship is sad many couples are empowered by a new start, and moving on with their lives can be a good thing, as sad as it is for loved ones.” She called on those in troubled relationships to seek professional help early on in the breakdown. “Marriage break ups in many cases are distressing, but experts like us know how to limit the damage. As well as advice to help couples move on, we are there to give reassurance and be a much-needed ally during what is always one of the darkest times in an individual’s life,” she said.
Office of National Statistics data statistics showed 42 per cent of marriages, 117,558 ended in divorce in the UK, in 2011, the last figures on record, which continued a recent downward trend since peaking in the 1990s. However, Ms Hicklin said the statistics were distorted due to less marriages taking place. “Less marriages need to be taken into consideration when divorce figures are published as with marriages taking place the break up rate seems to be very much consistent from what we can see,” she added. She also called on those thinking of divorcing to bear her firm in mind. “Our initial consultation is free and our expertise means we can certainly give you the tools needed to cope during marriage breakdown. Your situation will be handled with utmost sensitivity.” she said. Anyone wishing to talk to Quality Solictors Mander Cruickshank about marriage break ups can do so on 01530 510666.

LOUGHBOROUGH ORCHESTRA WINTER CONCERT On Saturday January 25th the Loughborough Orchestra will present its Winter concert in Trinity Methodist Church Centre, Loughborough at 7.30pm. Included in the programme are some very well known pieces of music; the most popular of these being the Haydn Trumpet concerto in Eb. Rebecca Robertson is to be the guest soloist for this performance. Rebecca graduated with Honours from the Royal Northern College of Music in 2010 before spending two years at the Conservatoire regionale Rayonneent de Jean Philippe Rameau at Dijon. She has also been a member of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain for 4 years. Her guest spot with the Loughborough Orchestra completes a circle of trumpet playing! Rebecca’s father was one of the first pupils of Trevor Lax, conductor of the Loughborough Orchestra. The evening also includes the “Prelude to Hänsel and Gretel” by Humperdinck and “Night on a Bald Mountain” by Mussorgsky, arranged by Rimsky Korsakov. This spooky piece featured in the Disney film “Fantasia”, giving it a much wider audience. The final orchestral piece is Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony, with its memorable melodies. Parts of the Symphony have been used for a variety of different musical uses including film music and advertising for Australian TV, besides inspiring other themes and songs.

Give up smoking this year, or you’ll do untold damage to your body. That’s the hard-hitting message from a new national campaign, backed by Leicestershire County Council, to encourage smokers to quit. Public Health England has launched TV advertising which shows how smoking puts toxins into a smoker’s bloodstream, which are then pumped around the body and into the brain.
Starting at the Marlene Reid Centre, Coalville, on Monday 20 January. An Open Day is being held on Wednesday 15 January between 10.30 am and 2.30 pm.

SMOKERS URGED TO QUIT THIS NEW YEAR
Ernie White, Leicestershire County Council’s cabinet member for health, said: “The New Year offers a new start for the two-thirds of smokers who are trying to quit. The risks of smoking are clear but there is lots of practical help and support on offer to help people to give up.” More than 2,600 Leicestershire smokers gave up cigarettes during October’s Stoptober campaign in Leicestershire which makes them five times more likely to quit, permanently. Benefits of quitting include:

JAMIE MCMAHON | LABOUR PARTY NW LEICESTERSHIRE Tel: 01530 277825 - Email: jamie@labournwl.org.uk
LABOUR TACKLING COST OF LIVING CRISIS – WORK THAT PAYS “Britain’s cost of living crisis is more that just rapidly rising prices, it’s stagnant wages and underemployment as well” said Jamie McMahon, Labour’s Parliamentary candidate for North West Leicestershire. Jamie continued: “Working people are now on average £1600 a year worse off under the Tories and Lib Dems. Prices have been rising faster than wages for 40 out of 41 months since David Cameron became Prime Minister. While it’s great we’ve finally returned to growth following years of flatlining growth it hasn’t addressed Britain’s cost of living crisis. For me underemployment is a key problem with the number of people working part-time because they can’t get a full-time job is at a record high.” “We need to make sure work pays for people here in Coalville. In order to help make work pay and encourage employers to increase wages Labour has promised businesses which sign up to pay the Living Wage at the start of the Parliament a 12-month tax rebate of up to £1,000 – and an average of £445 – for every low paid worker who gets a pay rise.” Jamie said.
Families that work have seen nursery costs rise by 30% since Cameron came to power. To help working families with the cost of childcare Labour will extend free childcare for three and four year olds from 15 to 25 hours per week for working parents and introduce a legal guarantee of access to wraparound care 8am to 6pm at primary schools.
Labour’s Parliamentary candidate Jamie McMahon concluded: “Labour understands our cost of living crisis. Local people are struggling to pay the bills and make ends meet. That’s why Labour has made tackling the cost of living crisis our top priority. Supporting businesses to increase wages and helping with the cost of childcare is just some of the ways Labour will improve people’s living standards here in Coalville.”
DELIGHTED TO SHOW SUPPORT FOR SNIBSTON
BUDGET-BUSTING ACTIVITY SESSIONS TO HELP YOU MOVE MORE FOR LESS
With the future of Snibston museum under threat from the Tory run Leicestershire County Council Jamie joined activists of the ‘Friends of Snibston’ at County Hall as they presented their petition. Over 7,500 people have signed the petition calling on the Council to protect the site and Jamie was delighted to show his continued support.
RESIDENTS could be quids in thanks to a budget-busting week of activities planned across Charnwood. From January 20 to 26, 2014, Charnwood Borough Council is offering 16 sport sessions for only £1 each, some are even free, during Move More 4 Less week. The discounted sessions form part of a week of reduced price sport across Leicestershire and include indoor cycling, disability sports, beginners’ golf and Tai Chi. Councillor David Snartt, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services, said: “At this time of year we know that many people look to take up or try new sports, or plan to increase their fitness levels. With this in mind we have organised a whole host of activities to suit all ages.
Jamie said: “We need to be ambitious for Coalville, investing to boost our town not cutting one of its best attractions to become another housing estate. The Friends of Snibston have done a great job and that’s why I was delighted to join them at County Hall for the petition hand over, it’s time the Tories on Leicestershire County Council listened.”
“For only £1 why not try a self-defence class in Sileby, or maybe you want to explore areas of the Borough and get fit at the same time, then there’s something for you. We are committed to ensuring our residents have access to opportunities that will help them to live healthy and fulfilling lives.” A full list of Move More 4 Less activities is available from the Council offices, Southfield Road, Loughborough, local libraries, leisure centres and Loughborough Town Hall. An online brochure can also been downloaded from www.lrsport.org/movemore. For a number of activities there is no need to book, full information on booking is available in the Move More 4 Less brochure. For more information about these or other Council-run sessions contact the Sport and Active Recreation Team on 01509 634673 or visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/pages/16.

"SAFE PLACES" TO AID NEW YEAR SHOPPERS Shoppers making the most of the new year sales are reminded that "Keep Safe Places" have been established in busy retail areas across Leicester and Leicestershire. With town and city centres bustling with people keen to bag a bargain, the venues are available for anyone who feels vulnerable, upset, scared or distressed. Set up in libraries and shops, including Age UK shops and businesses, staff can offer immediate reassurance to anyone that needs it. Staff can offer basic support, including a place to sit down and contacting friends or relatives if necessary, or the emergency services if required. The initiative has been developed by the county council in partnership with the police, city and district / borough councils, local community partnerships and Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland. Joe Orson, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for community safety, said: “Shopping areas are traditionally very busy at this time of year with people clamouring to bag a new year bargain. "We want people to know there are ‘safe havens’ they can go to if they are feeling upset, scared or distressed." Changes to the scheme mean that users now also have the option of being referred to First Contact, a multi-agency initiative that checks if people would benefit from a host of services and advice such as getting the right benefits, smoke alarms, help with their finances or support for carers.
Friday 14th March 12 noon to 2.00pm Stephen Booth discusses crime fiction and his Derbyshire based series of crime novels. We have events and talks during the day and in the evening too. MORTGAGE SUPPORT TO CONTINUE INTO 2014 Leicestershire County Council has pledged to continue its mortgage support scheme into the New Year, alongside the Government’s Help to Buy initiative. Council leader Nick Rushton wants local people to continue using the scheme, as there are still outstanding funds available with Lloyds Bank. Last year, the county council agreed to lend Lloyds Bank £10 million, enabling it to offer low-cost mortgages to up to 400 first time buyers. Under the scheme, buyers have to find a deposit of just five per cent. So far, £6.7 million of the council’s deposit with Lloyds has been used to underwrite Local Lend a Hand mortgages, which has resulted in 312 mortgages being approved and 236 purchases completed. Recently, the Government has also launched its own scheme, known as Help to Buy, which gives people another option when it comes to taking out a mortgage. Nick Rushton said: “The council’s Local Lend a Hand scheme has been a massive success within Leicestershire and we want it to continue for as long as there is demand for it. It’s allowed many first-time buyers to enter the housing market with much lower deposits than would otherwise have been required, for mortgages of £142,500 or less.”
HOW THE SCHEME WORKS • The council lends money from its reserves to Lloyds Bank. • The money allows the bank to offer mortgages of up to £142,500, reducing the size of deposit that first-time buyers have to find to just five per cent. • After five years, the bank repays the money, plus interest, to the council. For further details, or to apply for a mortgage, visit any Lloyds Bank branch in Leicestershire.

HAVE YOUR SAY ON THE LEICESTERSHIRE CARBON REDUCTION IMPLEMENTATION PLAN Leicestershire Together (a partnership made up of the county’s major public service budget holders such as local councils, the police and the health service) has a commitment to ensuring that our contribution to climate change is reduced. As part of this commitment a Carbon Reduction Strategy was developed. Leicestershire Together is now seeking views on the development of the Carbon Reduction Implementation Plan which accompanies the Carbon Reduction Strategy. We are keen to ensure that voluntary sector organisations and their members are consulted on the content of the implementation plan and would strongly encourage everyone to respond by reading the draft plan and accompanying strategy. A link to the draft plan and accompanying strategy is provided below. www.leicestershiretogether.org/index/partnerships/environment_ board_1/draft_carbon_reduction_strategy If you wish to make representations on the implementation plan please email your response to: hannah.moss@leics.gov.uk When responding we ask that you consider the following three questions; Are these the right actions to be including in the plan? Is there anything your organisation is already doing on this agenda which should be included in the plan? Are there any other actions, which are not currently included, which you’d like to see included in the plan? The closing date for responses is Friday 24th January 2014

CAN YOUR DIET EFFECT YOUR SIGHT?
We all know that a good diet means good health, but can what you eat have an impact on your eyes? Some research has suggested that certain foods, such as vegetable, fish, nuts and spices all contribute to the overall health of your eyes. Obviously you can’t beat regular eye tests to keep your eyes in tip top condition, but you can take little steps to help them be at their best.
1. Dark Chocolate = Yes, it’s true, chocolate is good for you! Dark chocolate is high in antioxidants and flavanoids helping protect blood vessels, which your eyes need to makes sure that the cells of the retina get the nutrients required to keep working. The higher the purity of the chocolate, the better it is, so try to go for 60% purity or above for maximum impact.
7. Nuts = Nuts contain high levels of zinc and vitamin E. Vitamin E helps to protect the membrane of cells and, like leafy greens, has been shown to help prevent cataracts and macular degeneration. 8. Garlic = Not just good for warding off vampires, garlic has long been suggested to promote blood flow and keep your blood vessels healthy. It is also thought that it could strengthen the lens through a high sulphur content.
2. Carrots = an oldie, but a goodie. Carrots might not give you night vision, but they are packed with beta-carotene, vitamin A and vitamin C, all of which are needed by the retina to help with low light vision and colour vision.
9. Citrus fruit = Oranges, lemons, limes are all crammed full of vitamin C, helping keep your retina, lens and cornea healthy. As the eye contains the highest concentrations of vitamin C found in the human body, it is vital to keep your levels topped up.
3. Leafy greens = Spinach, chard, kale; all of these are great sources of vitamins and minerals. They’re also full lutein and zeaxanthin which is used by the retina at the back of the eye for clear vision.
10. Herbs and spices = Parsley, oregano and turmeric are amongst the herbs and spices that have been linked to visual health, and they make your food extra tasty!
4. Cold water fish = Research shows strong links between the lack of glaucoma in Inuit communities and oily fish. Their diet of fish, such as salmon, sardines and tuna is rich in omega-3. 5. Eggs = Containing high levels of zinc, eggs are great for supporting your retinal health.
So all in all, eating healthily can have lot of advantages for your eyes, as well as the rest of your body – and it doesn’t have to be boring! Just looking at the wide range of ingredients above, there’s plenty there to produce healthy, tasty meals which will make your optometrist smile next time you pop in for a sight test.
6. Berries = Blueberries and bilberries in particular are another great source of anti-oxidants. Plenty of excuse to go for that chocolate and blueberry muffin... although fresh berries in a non-cake setting are preferable!
If you’ve made new year resolutions to get healthier, don’t forget to include your eyes. A good diet makes for better eyesight and if you’re due an eye test, make sure you book one this month, and start looking forward to a great year.

EXTRA MONEY FOR SCHOOL PLACES WELCOMED Almost £55 million will be ploughed into creating new school places across Leicestershire over the next three years. The money, announced by the government last week, will enable Leicestershire County Council to build new classrooms and construct new schools. It can be used to develop new school places in circumstances where there might be increased births forecast, or families moving to a particular school’s catchment area. It’s been allocated in response to a three-year school place plan submitted by the council. Ivan Ould, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for children and young peple, said: “This is excellent news and shows that the government has recognised the need for investment in our schools. “We are beginning to experience significant demand for school places, especially in the primary sector, but this money means we can ensure there are sufficient spaces available for children. We’re awaiting further information from the government and this will enable us to work with schools and other partners to work up a detailed plan early in the new year.”
IBSTOCK COLLEGE HOSTS MUSICAL EXTRAVAGANZA
A musical extravaganza featuring more than 100 performers from 15 local schools was hosted by Ibstock Community College (ICC). Young musicians from ICC joined others from schools across North West Leicestershire to perform for a packed audience of family and friends. The concert was organised by woodwind teachers Sarah Brown, Karen Abbott-Capps and Elaine Hill and compered by ICC Head of Music Andrea Allen, who also accompanied the students. Performers ranged in ability from pre-grade 1 to grade 5, and in age from seven to 18 years. For some – who had been playing for as little as six weeks – it was their first opportunity to take part in a public performance. Woodwind teacher Sarah Brown said: “This was the first opportunity for some of them to play with other musicians and make new friends. The audience were very appreciative and a great night was had by all!”
Schools represented included: Ibstock Community College, Ivanhoe College, Ashby School, Newbridge Academy, Castle Rock High School, Ibstock Junior School, New Swannington Primary, Woodstone Primary, Whitwick St John the Baptist, Worthington Primary, Willesley Primary, Measham Church of England Primary, Viscount Beaumont Primary at Coleorton, Sir John Moore at Appleby Magna, and Moira Primary. Ibstock Community College is used as a venue for various arts, sporting and other events throughout the year. To enquire about hiring college facilities, contact Alex Gamble at agamble@ibstockcollege.leics.sch.uk or telephone 01530 260705.

LOROS LOTTERY COLLECTOR URGENT – CAN YOU HELP? LOROS is urgently looking for commission paid or volunteer collectors for established lottery rounds in Coalville, Hugglescote and Whitwick. Calls are made on a four-weekly basis. We are desperately looking for someone who has a couple of hours to spare and could help. Would you or someone you know be interested in collecting LOROS Lottery subscriptions on an established round? There is no cold calling involved and everyone on the round has indicated that they would like a collector to call. It is a lovely way to meet new people, maybe you have just moved house and don’t know anyone in your area? It is also a good way of getting some exercise and, if you choose to take commission, a way of earning some extra money. Most importantly, it is a very worthwhile way of supporting LOROS.

DRAW A POSTER PROMOTING FOOD COMPOSTING Two events are to be held at Snibston Discovery Museum to launch the UK completion to design and draw a poster promoting composting. The events held on 23rd and 25th January provide schools the opportunity to participate in the launch of the competition and a chance for children to enjoy an extra activity during half-term. The free UK wide poster competition is being organised as part of 2014 International Compost Awareness Week by Leicestershire Master Composters to promote composting and encourage individuals, schools, colleges and businesses to reduce and compost their organic waste. The subject of this year’s event is Food Waste and the poster should promote composting as a means of reducing the amount of food waste sent to landfill sites across the country. The poster can illustrate any aspect of composting relating to food waste and could show: • • • • • •
The types of food that can be composted. Environmental benefits of food composting. Composting of kitchen waste and leftover cooked food in Bokashi bin or food digester. Composting of uncooked kitchen vegetable and garden waste using a compost heap, bin or wormery. Hot composting of uncooked and cooked food in an Hot composting system. Larger scale composting of food waste in a school, pub or cafe.
The closing date for those unable to attend the launch is 1st May 2014. Schools are invited to submit photos of their students working on their posters for display on our website. Posters entered for the competition will be displayed on the carryoncomposting.com web and at Snibston Discovery Museum, Coalville, Leicestershire during Compost Awareness Week. Donations for prizes are currently being sought. Some of the 2013 entries are may be seen at carryoncomposting.com and may be freely reproduced. Further details are available at carryoncomposting.com. Entries other than those from the launch events should be emailed as Jpeg images to carryoncomposting@ntlworld.com
Run by the Leicestershire Waste Partnership, which is made up of the county, district and borough councils and supported by Leicester City Council, the website has enabled more than 170 tonnes of waste to be diverted from landfill since it was set up in December 2009. Pam Posnett, chairman of the Leicestershire Waste Partnership, said: “It often makes sense to have a January clear-out to get rid of old and unwanted items and make way for the new festive gifts. “Freeusing can help ensure items find new homes rather then being sent to landfill. What is one person’s rubbish can be another person’s treasure.” Items that have been listed on www.freeuseit.org so far this month include a scanner, cake and biscuit tins, TVs, a computer monitor and sofas. As well as the website, a Freeuse smartphone app is also available to use.

TEST BORE HOLES DRILLED FOR NEW GREAT CENTRAL MAIN LINE BRIDGE The bridge is a key link in a chain of infrastructure which will ultimately link the Great Central North and South creating an eighteen mile heritage railway across Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire. The Great Central Railway has committed to raise one million pounds to fund the new bridge which will be built by Network Rail. The appeal has now reached the third of a million pound mark, with donors all over the country contributing. Recently the total was boosted by two grants, one from the Edith Murphy Foundation and the other from the 9F locomotive charitable trust. Bill Ford of the Great Central Railway said "We are very grateful to everyone who has given so generously. We are moving ahead and these ground works are the proof." Physical preparations to build a brand new bridge which will carry the Great Central Railway over the Midland Mainline at Loughborough have begun. Contractors appointed by Network Rail moved onto site for three days between January 7th and 9th to carry out investigation works. Boreholes are being drilled at each end of the site to establish the ground conditions for the abutments which will support the bridge decks. In turn this will help the design team finalise their plans and submit a planning application. Alan Kemp of the Great Central Railway Nottingham said, "After years of waiting, it is wonderful to see physical works begin. The boreholes are a vital part of the design process and give us all confidence the project is moving ahead. It will still be some time before a bridge appears, but it is coming!"
Network Rail have undertaken other preparation for the new bridge including investigating the ground where the new bridge's central supporting pillar will stand - between the fast and slow rail lines, just south of Loughborough Midland station. A planning application is expected to be submitted within the next two months, with the main construction work taking place around 12 months from now. It should be complete by the middle of 2015. A Network Rail spokesman said "Trial holes and boring form a key part of the design process for the project. Because we are aiming to use the existing bridge foundations, we are eagerly awaiting the results of the ground investigations as this will allow us to progress the design and keep the build programme on track. In order to build upwards we have to go below first!" To donate the GCR bridge appeal, head to the company website and click on the 'Bridge to the Future' logo. www.gcrailway.co.uk
