WELCOME TO YOUR MAY COMMUNITY EYE MAGAZINE It’s hard to believe spring is here as it seems to have arrived very suddenly, however it’s very welcome and I’m enjoying seeing the Bluebells start to flower as they have to be my favourite flower of all. Maybe it’s because my mother was walking in the Bluebells in Loughborough’s Outwoods just before I was born. Bel has a lovely spring article and it’s certainly inspired me to go and visit my local garden centre and have a look at the amazing array of plants for my summer pots and hanging baskets. Once the garden is looking neat and beautiful it’s time to tackle the spring clean inside. This month we’ve some handy tips for getting your house sparkling clean without having to go out and buy expensive cleaning products. We also welcome some new advertisers to our
successful magazine this month and as ever we are always looking for more businesses to join them. The more advertisers we get the more pages of community articles we can print so please recommend us to your friends. Advertising with us is so easy, all you need to do is call us up on 0800 6446 150 and we’ll take care of the rest. I do hope we have a chance to get out and enjoy the sun during the bank holiday and I look forward to bringing you next month’s edition.
SHARON’S WORTH HER WEIGHT IN GOLD! A weight loss expert from Coalville has struck gold for the exceptional work she does in helping more than 100 people to lose weight at her local group every week. Sharon, who runs the Whitwick and Coalville Slimming World group every week, has been awarded ‘Gold’ status by the national slimming club because of her success in supporting slimmers to reach their dream weight and the super services she provides to those members. The accolade is given to Slimming World Consultants who consistently have 100 or more members in their group over several months, and when the service they provide is so good that members come back week after week because they’re losing weight beautifully and wouldn’t miss their weekly group for anything. It represents the highest level of service in slimming and places Sharon in the top three per cent of the organisation’s 3,500 Consultants, meaning Whitwick is home to some of the best slimming support in the UK. It’s the 1st time Sharon has been awarded the prize since becoming a consultant in 2001. Sharon says “I am delighted to have received the ‘Gold’ award. I absolutely love my job, I’m passionate about helping people to transform their lives by
losing weight and seeing them succeed is reward enough, but being given this recognition for the whole group really is the icing on the cake. This award belongs to the Whitwick group’s 158 members. They’re the ones who make our group the success that it is, with their fabulous commitment, the wonderful support they give each other every week, and, obviously, their impressive weight losses while following Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan. They make the group a fun, buzzy place to be and I can safely say I always look forward to going to work. I truly believe I have the best job in the world.” “The Whitwick group has really put healthy weight loss on the map in North West Leicestershire. Together, they’ve lost an amazing 138 stone and 5lbs since the start of this year. Obesity is at record levels everywhere and with 25.1 per cent of adults in North West Leicstershire being affected, many people here are suffering a range of weight-related health problems from diabetes to heart problems and feelings of
low self-worth that impact on their working and personal lives every day. It’s never been more important that overweight people get the support to make changes to and lead healthier lives – both for themselves and the future generations, their children, too.” To join the Whitwick group, which is held every Monday at 5.30pm and 7.30pm at Hall Lane Methodist Church (next to Rugby Club) either pop along or give Sharon a call on 07855 250017.

ladies business networking group
GOES FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH It’s networking but not as you may know it! The Ladies Business Group (Now LoveLBG Limited) brings together local businesses owned, managed or represented by women LoveLBG supports, promotes and inspires the businesses involved. There are currently groups in Ashby, Alcester, Loughborough and Burton upon Trent with new venues Leicester and Sutton Coldfield launching this June, due to increased demand. Networking LoveLBG style offers a sociable, sharing and inclusive alternative to the hard sell format of traditional groups, encouraging business women to get away from the work place for just a short time (no crack of dawn starts with breakfast meetings for busy working mums!) and meet likeminded ladies from the local area to share experiences and promote their businesses. Founder Sue Crooks explains what led her to set up the group in Ashby de la Zouch in April 2012 "People buy from people. Women are particularly good at making strong connections that often turn into friendships. For the ladies in our networking groups, it's not just about the event on the day - we believe in ongoing support and promotion, with reduced price professional training, relevant and topical workshops to boost members’ knowledge and tips and skills to build confidence and cement relationships.” According to Sue, part of the group’s success is its less formal structure which many people find far more comfortable than the goal setting, referrals and pressure of other networking groups. "Refreshingly, there are no long, dull speeches - instead, we meet, chat, exchange news, eat and share in a relaxed atmosphere with an interesting guest speaker at every lunch event bringing tips, advice and fresh perspectives to our members. The Ladies Business Group has grown incredibly quickly since its launch 3 years ago, which is why we need to rebrand and invest in the group’s future. New groups in Leicester and Sutton Coldfield are coming on board to join Loughborough, Ashby de la Zouch, Alcester near Stratford and Burton upon Trent so the time is right to do this.”
Passionate about the group, Sue drives it forward with energy, warmth and humour. She’s especially good at connecting people and businesses together and as Managing Director of SJC Marketing Limited in Ashby, she brings professional expertise in social media, marketing and communications to promote and support the group, whose members enjoy an active Facebook page, Twitter hashtag #lovelbg and their own presence on a dedicated website. Sue explains how it works “You can visit twice as a guest to see whether the group is for you - all it costs is the price of the lunch, although most people join as members beforehand to get a discount, it’s superb value! I don’t think any other networking group offers membership at less than £100.00 a year with the support we offer and members able to go to any area event they choose. Lunches take place in local, independent venues every month with regular coffee morning meet ups for members.” No sector is locked out. Every member has equal status, whether they are a home-based sole trader or a partner at a leading firm of solicitors – unlike some organisations, more than one member can represent the same business or product. Nothing like a little healthy competition! Guest speakers have included Nicky Morgan MP, who launched the Loughborough group in Spring 2014, Karen Williams, Networker of the Year (and also host of our Burton and Sutton Coldfield groups) and Maria Hanson MBE whose foundation helps people make the most of the time they have left together. Every event also supports a charity by either holding a raffle or having donations such as Easter Eggs for children in domestic violence support systems or unwanted bras for women and orphaned teenagers in Africa. Members can look forward to a summer of exciting events, a racing day and more inspirational talks and discounted workshops in Marketing, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Twitter, Facebook and Email Marketing – all designed to help members grow their own businesses. Come and find out what it’s all about! Contact Sue Crooks on 03330 116 449 or visit www.lovelbg.co.uk
HERMITAGE HARRIERS TAKE ON MARATHON IN THE CAPITAL! Fourteen Hermitage Harriers took part in one of the world’s most popular marathons this weekend – the Virgin Money London Marathon. Some outstanding performances were delivered on the day from both experienced and first time marathoners. Matt Adcock had an amazing race and crossed the finishing line in 40th position with a time 2 hours 28 minutes and 39 seconds. He was joined minutes later by team-mate Tony Woodward who claimed 79th place in 2 hours 32 minutes and 13 seconds. The Harriers sub three hour hat-trick was completed by Shaun Coulton who crossed the line in 2.47.10 and finished 18th in his category. The times by the three men put them ahead of retired rower James Cracknell, who is a London Marathon regular, as well as super-fit Formula One driver Jenson Button. Finishing just over the three hour mark was Marc Schulz who ran an impressive race to finish in 3.06.11. Dean Kelleher, who won his place in the Harriers’ club ballot, was next Harrier home with a fantastic time of 3.46.12. Alan Percival and Rob Hickey also finished the marathon in less than 4 hours with times of 3.51.31 and 3.55.40 respectively. The next Harrier over the line did so in tremendous style by setting a 71 minute personal best! Darryl Johnson, who ran to raise money for Children with Cancer UK, completed the marathon in 4.27.49. Ailsa Rowles, who also won her place in the club ballot, was the next finisher for the Harriers with a time of 4.41.25. A relatively new face at the club, Jane Tebbatt, certainly did her team-mates proud when she finished in less than 5 hours with a time of 4.57.38.
Raising money for JDRF which aims to cure, treat and prevent type 1 diabetes, Caroline Townsend finished the London Marathon in 5.11.56. Tracey Richardson-Lyne, made it to the start line despite being plagued by injury, and managed to complete her marathon journey in a respectable 5.20.08. Team-mate Lisa Collins wasn’t too far behind her, crossing the finishing mat after 5 hours 35 minutes and 25 seconds. The final Harrier home was Edward Quinn who crossed the mat in 7 hours and 2 minutes. The club’s success at the London Marathon was hot on the heels of impressive performances at Manchester Marathon the weekend before. Ryan Twigg and James Willoughby both drove north to tackle the 26.2 mile course with impressive results. Marathon first timer Twigg finished the event in an outstanding 2 hours 46 minutes and 54 seconds, just ahead of teammate Willoughby who delivered and equally amazing result with a time of 2 hours 47 minutes and 33 seconds. Both men were delighted with their performances and hope their results will secure them a place to compete in the London Marathon. Meanwhile, a new club vet40 record was set by Paul Gregory who delivered an astounding 5k race at the Derby Midweek Race. Paul was the first vet athlete over the line in a time of 17 minutes and 19 seconds. Whilst Paul was delighted to take the vet40 top spot in the Harriers 5k Hall of Fame, he doesn’t plan on resting on his laurels and is keen to improve his time further. So, it’s been a busy few weeks for the Hermitage Harriers and looks set to stay that way! The club will be competing in the Livingstone Relays at Braunstone Park on 3rd May before turning their attention to the final winter race in the Leicestershire Road Running League; West End 8 on Sunday 17th May.
BENEATH THE LIGHTS REACH THE ORIGINAL BAND SHOWCASE GRAND FINAL (please message our facebook page if interested in travelling to the final)
Semi Final Review By Music in Leicester Did they save the best for last? After listening to five very good bands, I found myself running out of superlatives. One thing I would say about BTL: they had one of the most memorable songs of the evening and they started their set with it. Their setlist tonight was all their own music – some old numbers and some
new ones. On stage they really lived their music; it was a set that had showmanship. This is a band that we have covered several times before now. A band that had started late in 2010, so already had a fair bit of experience under their belts. They had played Glastonbudget festival several times and were part of the finals of last year’s OBS. They were also on the main stage at the Riverside Festival in 2014 and this year are playing at The Strawberry Fields Festival and Glastonbudget.

GRAND CENTRAL CHORUS HOST 2013 INTERNATIONAL CHORUS CHAMPIONS, TORONTO NORTHERN LIGHTS! Grand Central Chorus enjoyed the incredible experience of hosting the UK leg of Toronto Northern Lights (TNL) 2015 European Tour from 18-20 April which included a joint show, held at the Derby Theatre on the Sunday afternoon, superbly compered by Len Matthews, and which provided the capacity audience a rare opportunity to see and listen to one of the world’s top barbershop harmony choruses, who had not performed in the UK since 2008. TNL, founded and led by their MD, Steve Armstrong, won Barbershop Harmony Society International bronze medals five times and gained consecutive silver medals between 2001 and 2005 before finally winning gold in 2013 when the competition was held in their hometown of Toronto. Grand Central Chorus filled the first half of the show, and sang both their 2015 UK Barbershop Convention contest songs, one of which has been arranged especially for them by their MD Zac Booles and Tenor, Mark Burnip, as well as two of Zac’s previous arrangements for the chorus, Robbie William’s “Angels” and Billy Joel’s “She’s Always A Woman To Me” together with several other songs from their repertoire. Grand Central’s four quartets, (The Grand Dads, Finest Hour, Frank n’ Sense and Mirth and GSOH) also performed to an extremely high standard to the appreciative and knowledgeable audience.
The second half featured Toronto Northern Lights, with a superb package of both chorus and quartet songs, including the legendary “Brother Can you Spare a Dime” from their acclaimed 2004 International performance, and the two-hour show closed with both choruses together on the risers, singing “Irish Blessing” at the end of which the entire audience were on their feet, shouting for more! It was an afternoon of Barbershop which Grand Central Chorus, and many others who were also there, will remember for a long time. The Chairman of Grand Central Chorus, Alan Goldsmith summed up the weekend ‘the fact that we hosted an International Champion Chorus, had a great social evening and shared the stage with them is a great credit to everyone in Grand Central Chorus’ Follow Grand Central Chorus on our website www. grandcentralchorus.com on Twitter @GrandCentralMen and our Facebook page www.facebook.com/ GrandCentralChorus Nelson Blackley PRO - Grand Central Chorus

VITAX SHALL GO TO THE FAIR Vitax - one of the UK’s leading specialists in the manufacture of garden and horticulture products – has confirmed its sponsorship of The National Forest Wood Fair for 2015. The Coalville-based company signed a two-year deal in 2014 and is delighted to continue its partnership with The National Forest which dates back to 2010. With activities ranging from chainsaw carvers, wood mizers and woodloggers right through to the Wildman of the Wood, there is something to keep everyone entertained. “Last year proved that no matter what the weather, the Wood Fair is a very popular event. We met people who had travelled to Leicestershire for the weekend just to take part in all of the activities available,” says Paul Gooding, Vitax’s chairman. “The event is a great way to raise awareness not just about The National Forest but also sustainability, the versatility of timber and the need to ensure we continually support the regeneration of the forest. As part
5
of our commitment to the event we will be looking at ways we can engage more with local schools and showcase the magnificent facility they have right on their doorstep.” Covering 200 square miles in the heart of England, The National Forest is maturing as the boldest environmentally-led regeneration project undertaken in the UK. John Everitt, chief executive of the National Forest Company, says “The relationships we build with our partners, like Vitax, are crucial to the continuing success of The National Forest. The National Forest Wood Fair brings together not just local talent but wood and timber specialists from across the UK as we celebrate this wonderful resource. Timber is the ultimate sustainable product providing wood fuel, timber for arts and crafts and enjoyment to people of all ages, proving that trees and woodlands add immeasurably to the richness of our lives” This year the fair will feature around 100 exhibitors including live demonstrations of woodworking skills, craft displays and chainsaw sculpting. Tree-climbing and a range of forest-inspired goods will also be available. The event will take place on Monday, 31 August from 9am5pm at Beacon Hill Country Park, Leicestershire. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Martyn Kemp feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double
glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up
when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Coalville and the surrounding area and Martyn is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction
that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Martyn a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

NEWBRIDGE SUCCESSFUL AT SECURING AN ADDITIONAL £259,089 OF GOVERNMENT FUNDING The Academy received an early Easter present when informed they had been awarded £259,089 of funding. The money is to be used to replace the majority of windows and doors requiring improvement. Parts of building dates back to 1907 when first built. Through careful planning for maintenance and repairs, the Academy has been able to ensure window and door fixtures have been preserved for many years, often exceeding their life cycle expectations. Mrs Maxine Adams, Business Manager, submitted the application to the Department of Education (DfE) in December 2014. The DfE received requests for more than £1.6 billion for over 3,500 projects at over 2,200 academies and sixth-form colleges. Following the prioritisation process, the DfE have announced £367 million for 1,366 projects at 1,089 academies and sixth-form colleges. Following the careful consideration of applications, Newbridge High School Academy has been granted over a quarter of a million pounds. Mr Stewart Goacher, Headteacher, said "This is fantastic news, our students will benefit as their learning
environment will be enhanced, classrooms will be ventilated in the summer months and well insulated in the colder months.” Further to creating the improved climate for learning, plus the security enhancements associated, the improvements will ensure that the Academy will make on-going savings in respect of heating and annual general maintenance of at least £8,000 per year and lead to daily carbon emissions being reduced and a smaller carbon footprint ensuring the school improves it already excellent environmental impact. Since gaining Academy status in 2012, Newbridge High School Academy have been successful in over half a million in additional funding for improvements to the fabric of its buildings. Mrs Adams said "This is the second successful bid we have been awarded since becoming an Academy. We have been successful in securing Capital Grants exceeding half a million for repairs and improvements to the school. These additional funds allow us to use our school budget for educating students not funding premises issues. We believe that our young people and local community deserve the very best learning facilities and environment and we are totally committed to achieving this. This is excellent news for the Academy. We are all over the moon this bid has been successful allowing us to carry out necessary improvements and make savings each year into the future.” Receiving the most recent funding will have a huge impact upon the Academy allowing for work to commence during the summer term.

WEEK OF ADVENTURE FOR IBSTOCK STUDENTS A week of adventure in Shropshire was a dramatic change from lessons for students from Ibstock Community College. The 70 students spent five days tackling a range of outdoor activities, including kayaking, climbing, assault courses, archery and rifle shooting. They also honed their survival instincts by building shelters in woodland.
The aim of the week was to have fun – and to nurture important life skills, such as team work, independence and perseverance. Teacher Matt Draycott, who led the trip, said “The trip encourages students to develop skills that they don’t learn in school and to nurture their self confidence and sense of personal responsibility. The students were excellent and I think there are a lot of new friendships as a result of the trip.” The Manor Adventure trip has been provisionally booked for next year. The trip is run for Year 7 students.

FRIENDS OF THRINGSTONE LITTER PICK
we don't manage to cover everywhere, and the community litter pick on 9 May just showed what else is lying out there, disfiguring our village. In addition to the normal day to day litter we usually find, we have had an ongoing problem with people dumping full dog poo bags all over the village. Since these can be put into litter bins and also taken home and put with people's own rubbish, we cannot understand why people clear up
9 people, including one of the housing officers from NWLDC, came out on Saturday 9 May to take part in the Friends of Thringstone community litter pick morning, and managed to collect a staggering 31 bags of rubbish in less than 2 hours.
Chairman, Nita Pearson said “Whilst we litter pick daily in the village on an ongoing basis,
In June Dr Singh is hoping to invite friends and supporters to a drinks and nibbles evening at Livio’s Italian Restaurant in Shepshed. England and International Rugby star Martin Johnson, who is a patron of Hope Against Cancer, has agreed to come along to this meeting. Details of this on the blog very soon.
With a little imagination, the orchestra will take you on a journey through the heroics of Gladiator, across the wide plains of The Big Country and on to the bustling life of Paris in the mid 20th Century. You can travel to a fantasy time with dinosaurs reappearing to terrorise the earth or to the Land of Oz and the tales of its two most famous witches. Then there is a little fantasy woven around the life of Mozart (but no fantasy about the elegance of his Flute and Harp Concerto) And how could there be a selection of such drama without some deep emotions such as those found in West Side Story? With music from composers as diverse and expert as Gershwin, Tchaikovsky, Bernstein, Lloyd Webber and the “big daddy” of film music, John Williams, this promises to be a great evening. Tickets are available at £7.00, Concession £6.00 and Children £1.00, from secretary@ loughboroughorchestra.org.uk or from any member of the orchestra. Following exceptional demand for tickets at the last concert, it is recommended to obtain a ticket in advance to avoid disappointment. For more information see www. loughboroughorchestra.org.uk

Last month, over 200 bags of dog fouling were cleared away by one of our volunteers near an entrance to Grace Dieu Woods. COLOURFUL PATIO POTS
S
pring has well and truly sprung and summer is fast approaching. I’m busy helping clients with planting schemes, gardening advice and border rejuvenation all helped by the warm sunny weather we’ve been having. The nurseries and garden centres are brimming with lots of fresh plants to tempt us, but which ones are best for brightening up the patio in summer?
Nemesia
There are several ways to bring colour to areas around the house or patio and it doesn’t have to be all about deadheading high maintenance annuals! I love a pelargonium or two and I’m rather partial to trailing plants like Verbena so I create a few pots which are purely about the fresh vibrancy these bring and then the rest of my pots have a more long lasting planting to give colour all year.
ANNUALS FOR SUMMER POTS
Surfinias
Verbena
If you’re looking for plants to give a blast of colour from June to September and you don’t mind a bit of maintenance then combinations which include Pelargoniums (Geraniums by another name), Fuchsias, Begonias, Nemesia and Busy Lizzies will fulfil your needs. These will generally give upright height in a pot which can be surrounded by trailers such as Verbena, Surfinias, Bacopa. Given a good quality moisture retentive compost with a measure of Swell Gell and slow release fertiliser these will see you well in to
Autumn. These plants are generally tender annuals so once they get frosted they will need to be discarded and placed with autumn/ winter bedding plants.
PERENNIALS & GRASSES FOR SUMMER POTS
Perennials offer a more long-term solution, often looking good for several years before they need revamping or moving on into the garden. I have several pots which contain a mixture of perennials to give colour on and off all through the year. My favourites are the Hardy Gerberas and Hardy Osteospermum like O. ‘Tresco Purple’which will reliably flower from June onwards, rest during the winter and then start again the following spring. With these I plant grasses like Carex ‘Evergold’, Ophiopogon nigrescens (the black grass) and Festuca ‘Elijah Blue’. These all give evergreen colour and texture. For the trailers I use Thyme or Ajuga (Bugle) for evergreen foliage and colourful flowers – usually available in the alpine section at the garden centre/nursery.
SHRUBS FOR SUMMER POTS
The perennial Wallflower – Erysimum is a fab plant for colour and it flowers for such a long time with no need for tricky deadheading. E. ‘Bowles Mauve’ is rightly a firm favourite amongst gardeners with its bright mauve flower spikes and glaucous evergreen foliage. One trim after it has finished flowering and that’s it. Erysimum come in lots of
colours so there’s yellow, orange, deep red and pinky-apricot versions to try too. Lavender is a must for any garden and it survives very well in pots. Many gardeners struggle to grow it in our region due to our heavy soil, but in a pot with free-draining compost it will thrive (use John Innes no.2 available from garden centres/nurseries). Good varieties for pots include ‘Munstead’ and ‘Hidcote’ which are both traditional English varieties, or you could try French lavender varieties with their flirtatious butterfly tops. Phormiums are back in fashion and rightly so with their striking foliage and grand stature. Used on their own in a pot or surrounded by smaller grasses they will provide colour all year round. Or combine them with bold annuals like begonias for a tropical look. For my tips on how to plant up pots and hanging baskets take a look at the article from June 2014 on my website www.belgrierson.co.uk/ publications. I’m busy creating a wildlife friendly garden for clients at the moment, so next month I’ll be looking at the best ways to attract bees, butterflies, insects and birds. If your planting needs a splash of colour or you’re looking for garden design ideas I offer a tailor made service from consultations to full garden rejuvenation projects.

Canal Boat Trolley Dolly by Eileen Henderson
Nothing is ever all bad, not even illness, not even Cancer. If I had not had Cancer, I would not have had horrible side effects from medication - would not have joined the Cancer Self Help Group in Loughborough - would never have met Vivienne and Suzie - would never have heard about the Peter Le Marchant Trust and day trips on canal boats – far less become a trolley dolly on a canal boat!
“ Nothing is ever all bad, not even illness not even Cancer! ” Having grown up in the South of Scotland and spent many years in the Middle East I had only seen canal boats on visits to the Midlands but I found them fascinating and secretly wished that I could go on one some day! A chance conversation with a neighbour led me to join the CSHGL where I met Vivienne and Suzie. One evening at the Group talking with Vivienne it became a reality. Vivienne mentioned what a lovely day she had had. ‘Where have you been?’ ‘On the boat’ she said. ‘What boat?’ And so the story unfolded about being a Volunteer. When I mentioned that I had always wanted to go on a canal boat Vivienne and Suzie closed in with ‘Why don’t you become a Volunteer?’ ‘I’ll be too old’. ‘Not at all!’ Having passed all the necessary criteria, I commenced ‘duty’ one rather damp Monday morning in June. The day begins

around 9.00a.m setting up the boat for the days guests. Our clientele varies greatly from disabled children in huge body supporting wheelchairs, to others with diminished hearing and visibility, but this seems to matter not; they just love having fun in the fresh air. After everyone has had lunch and enjoyed a lovely cup of tea we have our on board shop! All the proceeds go towards the charity and it is beyond belief just how much money this can generate. Our day on the water comes to an end around 3pm and the gratitude of the disembarking passengers, old and young alike, is quite humbling. As they leave the boat they thank us for the wonderful day they have had, when in actual fact, they have also made our day special too! I thoroughly enjoy being a trolley dolly on the canal boat and just wish I had found out about it all years ago!

HELP LIZ TO FUND RAISE FOR EPILEPSY ACTION I've known my friend Caroline since I was five years old and as long standing friends do, we've shared some highs and lows throughout our time together. So, in November 2003, when I found myself holding Caroline's second daughter, a beautiful little girl, Eloise, when she was just a day or so old, who knew that in just over a few weeks her life, Caroline's and the rest of her family's life would never be the same again; as at just 2 and a half weeks old Eloise began to have seizures and soon Caroline began to hear words such as Tonic Clonic and Myoclonic seizures as a result of Cortisol Dysplasia leading to Epilepsy. It was clear that her condition was serious, life threatening and that tiny Ellie would
require surgery which in itself would have a major impact on her life. Eloise was having over 100 seizures a day and at 3 months old went through a 13 hour operation called a partial haemispherectomy of the right front lobe of her brain. Again her seizures began to increase to around 100 a day and she faced more surgery at 6 months old. The effects were as if she had a stroke, with weakness along the left side of her body. Caroline gave her physiotherapy every day but the effects of her Epilepsy are far reaching, she cannot speak, cannot step far and is doubly incontinent and developmentally delayed, She needs a lot of help, but she always tries to help....Eloise loves to be socially included, loving school, music and has a wicked sense of humour.
Despite this Eloise is a brave little girl, facing surgery and hospital visits again and again and with the help of her family Eloise has been able to walk. She still has seizures, just one or two a night, lasting seconds instead of hours. Caroline now a single mum working in a Special Needs School works hard to ensure Eloise (and her other daughter Yasmin) has a happy life just like any 12 year old.
of us give something back by taking part in Trek Fest I knew which charity I wanted to raise money and awareness for, Epilepsy Action.
When I held tiny Ellie all those years ago I had little understanding of how devastating Epilepsy could be, that's why when another long time friend suggested a group

CLEVER DANIEL AND THE SUNFLOWER SEEDS Bethany was a bird, and her favourite things in the world to eat were sun flower seeds! She had a big pile of them that she used to nibble on as a treat. Occasionally she would share them with her friends Christie Cat and Daniel Dog. Bethany loves them so much that for her birthday last year Christie Cat baked her a sun flower seed birthday cake and it was the most wonderful thing she had ever tasted!
‘When they grow each seed will grow in to a beautiful yellow flower’. ‘I’ve tried eating sun flowers and they taste very, very, nasty!’ said Bethany grumpily. ‘No’ laughed Daniel Dog, ‘you can’t eat the flowers! After the flowers die they turn in to seed heads and each head has hundreds of seeds on’ ‘Oh I like the sound of that’ replied Bethany So Bethany Bird gave Daniel Dog 5 of her seeds, keeping a few for her to eat whilst she waited for the seeds to grow. All through the summer Bethany waited sometimes, not very patiently but Daniel reassured her it would be worth the wait.
One day, just like every day before, Bethany went to get some sunflower seeds to nibble on, but when she looked she saw she only had a few left.
She watered them and looked after them and soon enough they each had a huge yellow flower on them. Whilst everyone else was enjoying looking at the flowers she was waiting for them to die so she could have the seeds.
So she went to Daniel Dog to see if he had any in his garden. ‘Hello Bethany’ said Daniel Dog, ‘Hello Daniel, I’m wondering if you have any sunflower seeds in your garden as I’ve almost run out?’ ‘I’m afraid I haven’t Bethany but I may know how to turn the few you have got in to lots more?’ Said Daniel. ‘Turn a few in to more? How can you possibly do that?’ asked a confused Bethany.
At the end of the summer she went out with Daniel and just as he’d said, each head had hundreds of seeds on it. Bethany and Daniel harvested the seeds. Bethany took most of them home to eat over the next year but Daniel kept some in his pocket so he could plant more in the spring as a surprise for Bethany. What a clever Dog Daniel was!
‘We will plant them in my garden.’ Said Daniel.

HEALTH & WELLBEING
An English Garden The magic of that dull, brown earth is very clear. Spring will work yearly miracle, never fear. Fresh green shoots give way to summer blooms. Gather your rose buds, brighten up your rooms. As one with the earth, I think that’s what they say. My favourite month? I suppose that must be May Apple blossom, pink confetti decks the trees. Swirling through the air on every gentle breeze. Fuchsia’s ruby droplets fill our hearts with gladness. Pinks with their gentle fragrance will dispel all sadness. Delphiniums, tall and stately, every shade of blue. Queen of the herbaceous border, yes that’s very true. Bumble bees, all pollen dusted, droning past. They tell us that high summer must be here at last. Butterflies like flying jewels they set the scene. Sweet pea, clematis yes and even runner bean. Their garden, like an orchestra that’s well in harmony. So gardener, take your baton maestro, let there beauty be.

This can be experienced as loss of sensation, tingling and numbness, burning or shooting pain, or inability to detect heat or cold. People often describe feeling like they are ‘walking on cotton wool’ or a ‘crunching’ sensation. Lack of pain awareness can lead to injury, untreated wounds, infection or ulceration, and in the worst case scenario amputation. Nerves that control the sweat glands in the feet and legs

Diabetes
Most people are aware that diabetics need to look after their feet but may not know why. Diabetes occurs where blood glucose is too high either because of the pancreas not producing any insulin (Type 1), or not enough insulin or insulin that is ineffective (Type 2). If not controlled efficiently diabetes can lead to poor circulation damaging the small blood vessels which supply the nerves. These arteries become ‘furred up’ (atherosclerosis) leading to a reduced blood supply and impaired healing, particularly affecting the feet. Foot or leg cramps may be experienced. High blood pressure, excess fat in the diet and smoking all increase the risk of poor circulation.

SUN PROTECTION FOR YOUR EYES

can be affected causing the skin to become dry and more prone to breaking if damaged. Anyone with diabetes should avoid walking barefoot as stepping on sharp objects may go undetected. Hot water bottles and radiators can cause injuries that the person is unaware of. Shoes need to fit well and be checked inside regularly for bumps or rough areas, and socks and slippers checked for seams that could rub and cause sores. The GP and diabetes specialist nurses can assist in maintaining normal blood glucose levels. A diabetic check with the GP surgery is recommended at least yearly and any signs of neuropathy should be discussed earlier if symptoms are noticed. Problems such as athlete’s foot, hard skin and nail problems need treating promptly and washing and drying the feet well, and moisturising dry skin are important. Moisturising cream should not be applied between the toes as it can make the area too moist and lead to maceration and skin breakdown. These simple measures can help to keep the feet in good condition and minimise problems.

LeLenses with full UVA and UVB protection will filter out the invisible ultraviolet radiation that can cause everything from sunburnt corneas to cataracts and cancer. All our sunglasses come with UV protection to the highest British and European standard and the UK’s UV400 and BSEN1836 marks also confirm lenses are fit for purpose. Sunglasses lenses come in many forms, each offering different benefits. Polarising lenses and anti-reflective coatings reduce glare from water, making them ideal for water sport enthusiasts. A wide range of lens materials are available, some of which are lightweight yet virtually shatterproof, while photochromic lenses automatically adjust their tint depending on light levels. Always ensure sunglasses completely cover your eyes, otherwise they won’t provide full UV protection. We’ll be happy to recommend frames that suit your facial shape and lifestyle requirements.
Did you know?
Sunglasses owe much of their early popularity to Hollywood. Powerful studio lights caused red eyes among cast and crew, and
sunglasses hid all the damage as well as providing celebrities welcome anonymity. Today’s spectacles and sunglasses can be ordered with a variety of precision engineered coatings that perform specific roles. With so many options to choose from, it’s important to consider which coatings best match your lifestyle. Popular lens coatings include anti-reflective layers, which prevent reflections or dazzle from wet roads or the headlamp beams of oncoming vehicles. Transparent scratch-proof coatings are ideal for further extending the lifespan of today’s hard-wearing polycarbonate lenses. Hydrophobic layers can also repel water droplets, as well as shrugging off dirt. These are ideally suited for glasses worn by people with outdoor jobs, where rain and grime are often part of daily life. We will be happy to discuss the options available during your next visit to the practice. Always bring your glasses along to eye examinations, so we can make sure they’re still providing clear vision.
Ask us about our collection of Prescription Sunglasses! Did you know? Some lens tints and coatings can help patients who suffer from dyslexia. Ask us for more information.
