COALVILLE Futsal team win the prestigious Birmingham Futsal League. ClubFutsalUK is now running a successful development centre at the Hermitage Leisure Centre on Tuesday evenings. As a result of training regularly at this weekly session, Myles Botfield and Matthew Moody both play for the victorious ClubFutsalUK Under 14's team, which recently won the prestigious Birmingham league. This is a weekly competition held at the Birmingham International Futsal Arena. Both Myles and Matthew aged 13 technically u13s Players play regularly for a Sunday 11-a-side team and have found that futsal has vastly improved their ability to understand how to pass the ball, their movement around the pitch and the skills involved in receiving the ball as a result of the highly technical arena of futsal. Futsal is played inside and so it has not suffered the winter weather, with both training and games being played weekly. The sport differs from football and five-a-side because the ball has reduced bounce and heavier ball capabilities. Continued on page 3
To Support Our Brilliant Community
When Castle Rock High School and King Edward VII Community College heard that the community needed some help, the students rallied round to do what they could. In a joint venture students collected non-perishable foods to provide meals for those residents struggling to put food on the table. King Edward students helped the young people of Castle Rock to understand the situation in assemblies and presented the case really well. In conjunction with this project the two schools also collected clothes. These are for local people who are job ready but need something smart to wear at an interview. An enormous amount of items was collected and presented to Councillor Nick Clarke and Charlotte Rowntree of the Agar Nook Community Centre.
Councillor Nick Clarke, Chair of the Agar Nook Community Association, commented that “It is so inspiring and humbling to see young people really making a difference in the community. These kind donations are greatly appreciated and will have a hugely positive impact on the disadvantaged and vulnerable locally.

Princes Trust Lend a Hand to MRC’s Little Dragon’s! MRC Community Action based at The Marlene Reid Centre in Coalville knows all too well that a little help goes a long way. With the helping hands of the Prince’s Trust Coalville Team from Leicestershire Fire & Rescue Service and local artist Chloe Langlois the Little Dragon’s Den will be a much nicer place after its recent makeover. Over the past few months, a team of volunteers led by Sally McNaughton have put in hours of their time to transform the hall at The Marlene Reid Centre into a seaside scene complete with a cave for George the resident dragon! A team of 16-25 year olds came up with a seaside theme which, with the assistance and talent of local artist Chloe Langlois, was sketched onto the hall walls and then painted.
School children from Year 8 of Newbridge High School in Coalville spent their Community Cohesion Day at The Marlene Reid Centre in March and used some of their time designing fish and other sea creatures which have been made into wall graphics to finish the brightly coloured scenes. Sally said “We have all thoroughly enjoyed working on this project and now that the work is finished we know all our hard work has been worth it” she added “the original plan was just to paint one wall but the project grew and grew and we’ve ended up painting all the walls!” Alex, one of the Prince’s Trust team said “We’ve had a great time, we have had lots of fun designing and completing the project” Alex added “Little Dragons Den is such a great place for young children to come and play and it’s nice to know we have played a part in making it a much brighter place”
Wyatt welcomes extra £1 million on road maintenance. County Hall's Tory administration has approved plans to spend an extra £1 million on road maintenance – after rejecting a Liberal Democrat proposal to do exactly the same thing. The county council's Conservative cabinet approved a change to its budget on Tuesday to use under spends this year for road repairs next year.
The Liberal Democrats had proposed that at a council meeting in February, but were turned down by the Tory majority. The Lib Dems claim the Conservatives have now copied their idea. County Councillor Michael Wyatt has been campaigning for over 12 months to get the Council to invest more in our much needed roads. Councillor Michael Wyatt said, "I'm delighted to see that the Tories have finally agreed to our demand for more funds to help tackle the growing number of potholes on our local roads. It's crazy to keep millions in the bank while our roads continue to deteriorate."
Lesley Massey, Children & Families Service Manager at MRC Community Action said “We are so grateful to the Princes Trust and to Chloe for the hard work they have all put in, it all looks fantastic and we know local children will enjoy the new look Little Dragons Den”
Little Markfield Farm Open Day 2013

This year’s open day is on the 9th June, and we hope that it is going to be bigger and better than the last year as the family is celebrating 100 years of working the land at Little Markfield Farm.

Council signs up another 40 local suppliers to Buy Local Scheme Another 40 businesses have signed up to North West Leicestershire District Council's Buy Local Scheme in the last month. The businesses, who are mainly contractors, were attending a local meet the buyer event hosted by Midlands firms, Kier and Lovell, who were seeking local suppliers to help them deliver the Council's Decent Homes improvement works. Currently the Council spends around £15 million a year on goods and services to help it deliver services to local residents. Through Buy Local, the Council aims to increase the amount of that spending which goes directly to local businesses. The scheme, which is FREE to sign up to, makes it easier and simpler for small and medium sized local businesses to supply goods and services to the Council. Ray Bowmer, Head of Finance at North West Leicestershire District Council, said: , "We've developed Buy Local to show what we can do as a council to support our local businesses. At this event we have signed up another 40 businesses to our Buy Local Scheme which is fantastic news. "By buying more of the things we need from local companies, we aim to do what we can to bring more business to people who trade in our district, increasing their income and so helping them to generate more jobs and growth." Once registered, businesses will automatically be on the list of businesses the Council will select from when buying goods and services up to £35,000. Businesses only need to register once and can keep their details up to date as well as get information to help them to do business in the public sector. Kier's regional managing director, Simon Bullen, said; "Kier is a leading provider of maintenance across the country and we will work together with local suppliers and subcontractors to put efficiency, service improvements and customer excellence as our top priorities." Lovell's regional director, Tony Tann, added: "Boosting local economies by working with local subcontractors and suppliers is a key part of our approach and we are delighted that this project is creating opportunities for local individuals and businesses." Businesses can sign up to Buy Local for FREE by visiting www.buylocalgov.co.uk North West Leicestershire District Council is in the heart of the National Forest serving over 90,000 people living in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Castle Donington, Coalville, Ibstock, Kegworth, Measham and the surrounding villages.
The Coalville Light Orchestra If you play a musical instrument (of the orchestral variety) and perhaps haven't played for a while, don't have the confidence to play in public, or simply don't have the time to commit to hectic rehearsal schedules, but would like the opportunity to play with an orchestra or a small group, there are a few opportunities in the local area. The Coalville Light Orchestra meets to play light classical music (overtures and the like) on Tuesday evenings 7:15-8:45 throughout the year at Newbridge High School in Coalville. It is mainly adults though there are some younger players. There is no annual membership fee and no charge is made for anyone still in full time education; everyone else pays just a nightly fee of £2 to cover the hire of the hall, piano and music. New players of most instruments would be welcome, especially violas and brass (there is a waiting list for flutes and the group already has a pianist). While some pieces may be played for several weeks there is always something different from week to week so sight reading skills are definitely improved, or put to the test! Transport is available from Shepshed or the Meadow Lane area of Coalville by arrangement with their pianist. The conductor is Ted Bottle on 01530 834133 or e-mail coalvillelightorchestra@yahoo.co.uk The Friesland Orchestral Society meets on Friday evenings 7:00-9:00 at Brackenfield School, Bracken Road, Long Eaton, Notts from September to May. With increased numbers playing this year the nightly charge has reduced (yes reduced!) to £2 with no annual fee. This orchestra plays the same pieces for a number of weeks before changing to a new set to enable players to become familiar with the music. Transport can usually be arranged from Shepshed if you have difficulty getting there. The contact is Mason Thompson via amateurmusicuk@yahoo.co.uk Finally if you would like to try chamber music (duo sonatas, trio, quartet etc with or without piano) then there are a number of opportunities usually at members' homes. New hosts, preferably with piano, would be very much appreciated. No public performances are given. A second pianist for piano duets is also sought. Their contact is Stewart Smith via amateurmusicuk@yahoo.co.uk or via the Coalville Orchestra."
Children’s hospice calls on walkers People are being urged to pull on their walking boots and raise vital funds for Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People. Rainbows is staging its annual sponsored Walk of Life on Sunday 19 May, as part of Children’s Hospice Week*, and is calling on the people of Leicestershire to sign up. Starting at Leicestershire County Cricket Club, on Grace Road, walkers can take on a 15 mile trek or a gentler five mile amble around the city and surrounding countryside. More than 700 people took part in the event last year raising £45,000 for the Loughboroughbased hospice. Many of the walkers dressed as their favourite super hero or brought their dogs along which made a fantastic sight around the streets of Leicester. This year, organisers hope to attract 800 walkers and smash last year’s figure.

Fantastic Five Scoop Environmental Awards Five projects from North West Leicestershire walked away with special awards for their commitment to the environment at a ceremony held on 26/4/13. The Green Footprints Awards, which are now in their fifth year, were organised by North West Leicestershire District Council. The awards champion the eco work by schools, young people, the community and businesses who have met the challenge of choosing greener ways to live and work. Making North West Leicestershire a greener District is one of the Council’s key priorities and the Green Footprints awards recognise the best of achievements in five awards’ categories. Announcing the winners, who were presented with their awards at the annual Civic Dinner which was hosted by one of the awards sponsors, the Radisson Blu Hotel, East Midlands Airport, Council Chief Executive, Christine E Fisher, said: “The standard of entries this year was very high, so our winners should be very proud of their achievements. “Each and every one of them has demonstrated that there is something we can all do to improve our environment. These improvements have an impact on everyone who works, visits or lives in our District. The Green Footprints awards are all about encouraging us all to take the first steps to a greener way of life.”

BreatheEasy
North West Leics: Group News Since we first started our articles in the February issue of Coalville Eye we have enjoyed a considerable increase in numbers of members coming along to our exercise sessions and to our social meetings, but we are still open to receive new participants in our activities. We are a self help group working under the direction of the British Lung Foundation to provide a network of friends, advisors, events and activities that support and empower people affected by lung disease. The key objectives for all Breathe Easy groups are: • To provide mutual support to members- for all people with lung disease, their Friends and Carers, from all sections of the community. • To provide information and education to members – Through organising guest speakers and providing BLF publications. • To promote the group and the BLF – raising awareness locally of the BLF and of Breathe Easy groups among the people affected by lung disease, health professionals, politicians and the general public.
There was also a fund raising coffee morning and fancy dress at Ibstock Day Nursery which contributed to the grand total of £1,584.09.
Coalville’s Community Event Taking Shape Booking is now open for stallholders wanting to attend the District’s largest free community event – CoalvilleTwenty13. Organised by the Cultural Services Team at North West Leicestershire District Council, Coalville Twenty13 takes place on Sunday 23rd June 2013 at Coalville Park and will include, food, music, street entertainment, arts workshops, children’s rides, skate park, inflatables, stalls and general family fun. The event, which was hugely successful last year, was attended by thousands of people who enjoyed a great family day out. John Richardson, Head of Community Services at North West Leicestershire District Council, said: This event at Coalville Park has become a real highlight on everyone’s calendar. Our Cultural Services team are now busy getting the structure of the event planned and would like to hear from local businesses, charities and community organisations or anyone wanting to book a pitch for a stall.” Bookings for pitches for stalls is now open, with fees starting at £15. Booking forms can be obtained from julia.harley@nwleicestershire.gov.uk or call 01530 454604
The main focus of the North West Leics: group is a monthly social meeting. This covers all three of the core activities as listed above, including a mutual chat with other members over a cup of tea and biscuits. These meetings take place on the second Wednesday of each month, at Coalville Labour Club, Bridge Road, Coalville, and include speakers or other activities. Speakers make up about half of our yearly programme. Last month’s speaker dealt with the subject of breathlessness and the management of it, whilst in May the subject of our talk is to be Family History. The rest of our programme is more relaxed and can include such things as beetle drives, bingo, etc: We also hold weekly exercise class each Thursday afternoon from 3.00 – 4.00PM where you can join in a specially formulated programme of exercise, designed to suit people with lung conditions. Why not just call in and join us in our activities, whether it is just for the exercise sessions, the social meetings or both. Just give Eunice a call on (07790) 278435 for more info; or to let her know you will be attending! Roger Gamble.
I gave an odd-job man a list of 10 things to do around the house, but he only did numbers 1,3,5,7 and 9.

What are community assets?
Get involved in Local and Community History!
As a new Parish Council, Hugglescote and Donington le Heath is soon to be handed responsibility for a range of ‘community assets’. These include graveyards, allotments, parks and play equipment and even a Scout hut. Cllr Dr Terri Eynon said ‘Doing the legal work to transfer these from the District Council to the Parish has thrown up some interesting anomalies. The parkland on Ashburton Road, for example, is on a one year rolling lease. This gives the Parish very little security of tenure.
Have you been inspired by the discovery of Richard III, or always wanted to trace your family tree? If so, Local and Community History Month is for you.
‘Not all land and buildings are community assets. What post-industrial debris might lie under the Millfield recreation site, for example? Finding a safe legal framework for the transfer that minimises the risk to you, the tax-payer, has taken some time’. ‘Locality’, a network of community-led organisations, believes that land and buildings are only community assets if they are capable of generating a profit that can be reinvested into activities that benefit the community. Parish councils are not the only organisations who can take over community assets. In some places, local people have organised to take over the running of a museum. A less ambitious project might be taking over some dilapidated Council run garages for the use of a neighbourhood association. Whatever community assets your group wants to take over, you will need to have a viable plan. Work with your local Council, and ask to see their ‘community asset transfer’ policy. Get support from neighbours and friends. Write a business plan and check that land and buildings in question really are assets and not liabilities. Whatever you plan to take over must generate enough income to fund repairs, maintenance and on-going operational costs. For further information, have a look at Locality’s website www.locality.org.uk or contact terrieynon@gmail.com

Local Charity Appeals For Volunteer Drivers
Registered Charity 1112869 www.hospicehope.org.uk Registered Charity 1112869 www.hospicehope.org.uks
MRC Community Action, a local charity based at The Marlene Reid Centre are appealing for volunteers to work in and around North West Leicestershire. The project provides door to door service taking people to important health related appointments. Passengers book their journey in advance and are collected and returned to their homes. The Community Transport project makes a real difference to the local community by providing a service to those wanting to maintain their independence. Nikki Warrilow, Community Transport Service Manager said “We are desperate for extra drivers at the moment” Nikkia added “People using our service would really struggle without our help as our transport helps people who do not have access to public transport or if they do they would find it difficult to use, volunteers are vital to the operation of these services” So, if you are retired, unemployed or just have some free time on your hands your help would be appreciated. Volunteers would receive reimbursement for every mile they travel using their own car. Being a volunteer offers lots of flexibility – anyone can volunteer as much or as little time as they want, drive on a regular basis or be as flexible as they need to be; any time on any day of the week would be extremely helpful! A volunteer driver working with The Marlene Reid Centre explained “I love knowing I am helping someone and it makes me realise that I might need some help one day – each time I volunteer I go home thinking I did something good and that makes it really worthwhile. The people we help are so appreciative and would be lost without this service”. Nikki added “Volunteering can be very rewarding – you get to meet lots of new people and if you enjoy driving it may be just what you are looking for to make the most of any free time you have” MRC, who have provided invaluable services to the local community for more than thirty years rely heavily on the support of reliable volunteers and last more than 150 volunteers were involved with the organisation. There are currently several volunteer opportunities available. If you are interested in finding out more about becoming a volunteer at The Marlene Reid Centre call 01530 510515, visit www.mrc.uk or pop into reception.

Coalville Community Eye, Bringing Local Businesses and Local People Together
Cash For Your Community!
Leicestershire County Council has made available £320,000 per year for local communities to invest in local improvements of their choice. The funding is available through the 25 Community Forums. This Community Forum Budget is not a regular grant fund, because local residents are involved in all aspects of the process and they will be making the decision which projects should receive a share of the funds. Community groups can put forward project ideas for which they are seeking funding. All those project proposals are then made available on the forum's website so residents can view and comment on them. The community groups and other local residents then come together for a Decision Night to discuss the projects and vote for their favourites. All proposals will benefit from advice by a panel of experts, including advice on further sources of funding.
Don't miss out! Dates for your diaries: Submit a Project Proposal: 20th May View and Comment from: 21st May Register your interest to attend: 21st May - 10th June Decision Night: 17th June Information about how to apply, view and comment on projects and register your interest to attend your local Decision night is available on your forum homepage. You can also call 0116 305 7034 for more information.

Hugglescote and Coalville W.I. At March’s meeting of Hugglescote and Coalville W.I. we were entertained by a very amusing lady June Davis. June had retired when she saw an advert in the paper asking for volunteers to take part in the BBC quiz programme ‘The Weakest Link’. After a few weeks June had heard nothing and so assumed that she had not been successful however six months later she heard that she was to go for an audition for The Weakest Link. The group of perspective contestants were given a piece of paper and a pencil and three minutes to answer the questions. June didn’t get off to a good start, her pencil broke and she didn’t answer any questions and to cap it all everyone in the group voted her off. This was not the end for June however because two weeks later she heard that she was to go to Glasgow for two days to record a programme for The Weakest Link. The contestants we told to bring three different tops to wear there were however certain provisos. No cream or white, no black or navy, no pastel colours, no stripes, checks or spots and avoid bright red leaving a very limited choice. They were interviewed individually by a producer not realising they were giving away information that would be used by the scriptwriters to feed to Ann Robinson. Eventually they got to the studio where they had to stand in height order and were given a platform to stand on so that everyone was about the same height. They had to learn how to do ‘The Walk of Shame’, rehearse writing the name of the person to be voted off and how to hold up the card with the name on. They had been there since 8.30am and now at 2.00pm they began the recording. June reached the final but sadly didn’t win she hadn’t told anyone she was taking part hoping no one she knew would have been watching. How wrong she was within an hour of the broadcast her phone didn’t stop ringing it seemed as though the whole world knew. People stopped her in the street in her village wanting to know all about her time on The Weakest Link. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 16th April at the Methodist Church Hall on Station Hill in Hugglescote. The meeting starts at 7.30 we shall be having a lively discussion evening with refreshments. Visitors are always welcome.

So says an expert, who warns that “clutter in your outer environment is the physical manifestation of all the clutter that is going on inside of you. Clearing clutter has a ripple effect across your entire life, including your work.” Jayne Morris is the resident life coach for NHS online, and she goes on to warn that “the things you are holding on to that you don’t really like, don’t ever use, and don’t need any more.... things that no longer fit or serve you, drain your energy.” Scans have confirmed that victims of hoarding disorder have abnormal activity in regions of the brain involved in decision making. A survey has shown that more than a million people in the UK are compulsive about keeping their possessions.

Science students got to grips with MRC DBS Check Service Provides a prickly subject - when two Local Solution. hedgehogs joined the class. Poppy and Prickles - a pair of pygmy hedgehogs - were brought in by their owner Amy Webb to tie in with the students' work on the classification of animal species. Students asked questions about the animals' diet, behaviour, nocturnal habits, hibernation and other issues - and some even got the chance to hold the prickly pair. Teacher Tracy Allen said: "It was fascinating for the students to be able to get so close to the hedgehogs and to find out about their habits."
Not many people know that MRC Community Action based at The Marlene Reid Centre provide a dedicated service processing DBS Enhanced Check. These were previously known as CRB Checks and were introduced by the Disclosure & Barring Service to help protect children and vulnerable adults by providing a first-class service to support anyone recruiting people into positions of trust. The service is available to businesses, individuals and volunteers and is applicable to anyone who is currently working with or who has unsupervised access to children or vulnerable adults. DBS checks are also required for anyone who goes into people’s homes as part of their job. Marlene Reid Enterprises, a trading arm of MRC Community Action, is a registered Umbrella Body for the service and provides advice and support to organisations, individuals and volunteers seeking to obtain a Disclosure. They provide a dedicated service with staff to process the application and to monitor its progress through to the certificate being issued. A client recently said “In all the years I have been using a registered body, or indeed been one myself, I have never had such an efficient service". The current charges for submitting an ENHANCED DBS CHECK are £15.00 per volunteer and £59.00 for a paid member of staff or private individual. If you require more information about a DBS Enhanced Check call Hannah Reeves on 01530 510515 or email hreeves@mrc.uk.net.

Trading Standards officers have issued a warning about rogue traders offering to jet wash drives and patios in the county. The traders have been calling door-to-door and use a range of tactics to pressurise consumers in to having the work done.
Annie Duggan In Supreme Form.
Leicestershire County Council’s Trading Standards Service is urging people to be vigilant. They have received a total of nine complaints since February in the Melton and Loughborough areas where customers have paid between £80 - £5,500 for work that has been badly done.
Annie Duggan was in supreme form at Thringstone House Community Centre on Saturday 27th April.
The traders usually use professional looking leaflets, which are no guarantee that the trader is reputable. They also ask to use the customer’s water supply to carry out the work. They usually start the work straight away and don’t give the customer a written seven day ‘cooling off’ period required by law. Once work starts, the traders will identify other jobs that they could complete on the property.
A full house was treated to a memorable night of sheer entertainment. Annie and her talented musicians produced a versatile, superb rendition of Country music from the U.S.A.
David Bull, Head of Leicestershire County Council Trading Standards Service, said: ‘Residents should always be extremely wary of traders who cold call door-to-door.
The acoustics in the upstairs Hall are excellent and Annie's soulful singing and punchy musical style made for a magical upbeat evening. Just the "pick me up" we all needed.
High pressure sales won't wash say Trading Standards
“We frequently see cases where rogue traders have convinced consumers to have work done that is not required and is usually over priced and badly done. “Our advice is never to agree to any work without getting at least three written quotes from a number of well known or local traders.” Information on dealing with doorstep sellers, as well as special no cold calling stickers, to find a reputable trader from the Trustmark scheme is available at: www.leics.gov.uk/tradingstandards If you wish to report any rogue traders email: telltradingstandards@leics.gov.uk Top tips if approached by doorstep sellers: • Do not agree to have any work carried out on the doorstep without getting written quotations from other trader. • Say you are not interested and do not let the caller into you home. • Rogue traders often give name and address details that are false, so if you can, try and make checks about any trader you are thinking of employing. • If you receive information through your door advertising home improvement or other services, think carefully before you respond, as glossy, professional leaflets can be used by rogue traders to give you the impression they are genuine businesses.

Annie and the Band have played at the Community Centre a number of times and the Centre's organisers are hoping a return visit will be made sometime in the future. Annie remarked "I just love playing at the Centre. The atmosphere generated from the audience is palpable and the warmth of their reception to our music is terrific. Annie added I feel part of the Community Centre, it's in "my patch" and I urge people to come along and support the Centre. It is too important to lose."
