Plans Submitted For Coalville Leisure Centre As Work To Renovate Hood Park Leisure Centre Gets Underway Aritcle by Caroline Ormond
The planning application for Coalville’s new £23 million leisure centre has been submitted in the same week as renovation work begins at Hood Park Leisure Centre in Ashby de la Zouch. The steps come just two months after North West Leicestershire District Council’s leisure partner Everyone Active took over management of the two main leisure centres in the district. The 25 year contract with Everyone Active includes a complete renovation of Hood Park Leisure Centre, as well as a brand new leisure centre being built in Coalville on land off the A511 near Stephenson College. Coalville Leisure Centre The planning application for the new Coalville Leisure Centre is now available to view at www. nwleics.gov.uk/planningapplications (application reference: 19/01343). Subject to receiving planning permission, North West Leicestershire District Council’s (NWLDC) new leisure partner Everyone Active will build and operate the new leisure centre, whilst the council will own the building. The new facility will replace Hermitage Leisure Centre, which will stay open until the new one is ready. The planning application explains how the building will achieve the environmental accreditation BREEAM status, with LED lighting throughout, air source heat pumps, electric car charging points and photovoltaic panels on the roof that will harvest energy from daylight, helping to reduce the carbon footprint of the building. Outside, the proposed building aims to reflect its woodland surroundings, with impressive wooden beams swooping down over the pool area and a large glass front playing host to the reception area and café. A trim trail, natural play spaces and a cycle track will be featured in the grounds around the centre. Inside the building, the plans show the gym with views across the parkland surrounding the centre, with the range of other facilities including three squash courts, clip and climb, spin studio, an eight court sports hall, an eight lane swimming pool and a learner pool. NWLDC’s planning committee is expected to consider the application in October, with work likely to start on site before Christmas. Hood Park Leisure Centre The renovation work at Hood Park Leisure Centre began on Friday 12 July, with internal work expected to be completed by Christmas. Tying in with the school holidays, the work includes a new 75- station gym created upstairs, a dedicated group cycling studio, a new reception foyer including grab and go food, as well as refurbished squash courts and changing rooms. Fitness classes have been temporarily moved to the neighbouring Ivanhoe College while the renovation takes place. The gym will be in full use until the new gym opens and both the indoor and outdoor pools will stay open seven days a week over the summer. Councillor Richard Blunt, Leader of North West Leicestershire District Council, said: “We’re pleased that the plans to improve leisure in the district are moving forward with such a pace. I’m particularly looking forward to seeing the renovation at Hood Park, which will create a modern, fit-forpurpose centre with some impressive new facilities. Having learnt to swim at the outdoor pool many years ago it is great to see the improvements coming forward for the next generation.” Dan Hicks, Area Contract Manager at Everyone Active, said: “It’s been an exciting week for both leisure centres and we’re delighted to be a step closer to bringing state-of-the-art leisure facilities to the local community.”

Janet’s Charity Challenge Helps More Cancer Survivors Live Life To The Full Article by Sarah Staples
It Is Easier Than You Think To Make A Difference To The Life Of A Child In Care Article by Kam Doll
Barnardo’s are looking for volunteer befrienders called Independent Visitors (IV) to spend a few hours each month with a child or young person who is looked after by the local authority. IVs make a real difference by spending quality time with a child or young person to share a hobby, sport, or interest. It is the little things that the IV does with their young person that makes the biggest impact by building confidence and resilience; it can be as simple as a kick about or a picnic in the park. Barnardo’s offers volunteers thorough training to prepare them for the role they are taking on including classroom induction and safeguarding training days. All volunteers are assigned a support worker to provide ongoing support and guidance and the service reimburses volunteer’s out of pocket expenses and mileage. Independent Visitors are ordinary people making an extraordinary contribution to the lives of others. If you would like to find out more please call 02476 372596 or email: coventry&warwickshirecrs@ barnardos.org.uk
A breast cancer survivor has raised nearly £700 for the charity which helped her regain physical fitness and confidence after treatment. Janet Harding set herself the personal challenge of walking part of an ancient Spanish pilgrimage route, the Camino de Santiago de Compostela, in May. But when generous friends and family heard about her plan, they asked if they could sponsor her and she decided to set up a JustGiving page for Supporting Confidence Through Exercise (SCTE). The Measham-based charity runs In the Pink, a Pilates-based gentle exercise programme which helps with physical and emotional rehabilitation after breast cancer treatment. The pioneering course is one of the only ones of its kind in the UK. Janet, 64, was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ – or precancerous cells - in November 2017 following a routine mammogram. She was told by consultants that she needed a full mastectomy. The news came as a bombshell as she had taken retirement from her job as a part-time accountant only weeks earlier and was looking forward to spending time with her new baby granddaughter. “It was a tough few months and everything happened quickly. I tried to stay positive and just be grateful that I didn’t have to have chemotherapy or radiotherapy. I had a surgical reconstruction using muscles from my back. What I wasn’t prepared for was that after that, I found some day-to-day things, like mopping the floor and hoovering difficult, because I was very stiff. Before treatment, I went a Pilates class, but afterwards I felt I couldn’t go back. I was very self-conscious because my body and my abilities had changed. By chance I heard about In the Pink and it was a gift from heaven. I went along every week for eight weeks. It’s even given me the confidence to go back to my old Pilates class.” The Camino de Santiago, or Way of Saint James, is an ancient pilgrim route across northern Spain to the Cathedral where the remains of Saint James are enshrined. Janet, who lives near Market Bosworth, walked 115k from Sarria to Santiago in eight days. “For me, the walk started off as a personal challenge. After all the surgery over the last 18 months, I had no idea if I had the stamina or the will to keep going day after day. Now I know I can achieve more than I expect to, I know that I am stronger than I believe, and I know that exercise really has given me the confidence to fight back and to look forward to the future.” The next In the Pink programme starts on Tuesday, September 24 at Ashby Road Sports Club in Hinckley. Each course is free, runs for eight weeks and takes a maximum of ten participants. Michelle Scott-Worthington, SCTE’s programme coordinator, said: “We can’t thank Janet enough for fundraising for us. Stories like hers make everything we do worthwhile. We are passionate about making sure that every In the Pink programme is free, so that we are accessible and open to all breast cancer survivors – and donations like this make that possible.” Find out more about SCTE and In the Pink at scte-activities.org.uk or call them on 0300 365 9791.

Stay Well On Your Travels Article by Gary Trickett
Looking forward to getting away this summer? The following tips should help to make sure your holiday is memorable for all the right reasons. Bolster your defences. A strong immune system is important at all times but especially so when we travel. The stuffy confines of an airplane cabin are the perfect breeding ground for germs. Echinacea purpurea is one of the best immune-supporting herbs there is, so make sure this makes it into your hand luggage. Take the stress out of the journey with Jan de Vries Emergency Essence. It can help to restore balance and is particularly popular with reluctant flyers. Support your digestive health with a good prebiotic supplement before and when you travel. Don’t eat anything that looks undercooked or raw and avoid buffet food that may not have been kept at the right temperature. By far the most common cause of tummy trouble abroad and diarrhoea especially, is dirty or contaminated water. Only drink bottled or canned drinks and remember also not to use ice in your drinks. If you do succumb to ‘holiday tum’, drink plenty of water to help prevent dehydration; experts recommend between two and three litres a day especially if you’re in a hot climate. If mosquitoes and biting insects are a problem, a good insect repellent on exposed skin should help. Neem seed extract is a popular alternative to DEETcontaining sprays and the scent of neem masks your individual scent, making you less easy to find. Finally, have fun in the sun but do so safely. Always wear a good SPF and avoid sitting in the sun when it’s at its strongest. Bon voyage! For further advice, visit Gary and his team at Healthy Route, 18 Silver Street, Leicester.

Coalville Park Lands Green Flag Award For Excellence Article by NW Leicestershire District Council
Coalville Park has become the first open space in North West Leicestershire to achieve the coveted Green Flag award. The news comes as the park throws open its gates for Love Parks Week - with a whole host of free activities planned. Green Flag status is reserved for parks and green spaces that set a high standard and are appropriately managed to meet the needs of the communities they serve. North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) manages Coalville Park and submitted a Green Flag application after a long period of work to improve the park. This included creating the Friends of Coalville Park community group, which now works with the council to develop future plans and ideas for the space. As well as its play equipment, skate park, outdoor gym, 400 metre running track and tennis courts, the park has two dedicated gardens. A huge amount of work has also gone into developing the Peace Garden which pays tribute to the sacrifice of our Armed Forces both past and present, and helped the park to achieve its ‘Centenary Fields’ status last year. Sitting alongside the Peace Garden is the community and sensory garden, which is designed to be an accessible space for local residents of all ages and abilities to get involved with gardening activities. To achieve Green Flag status NWLDC had to prove that the park: • Is a welcoming space • Is healthy, safe and secure • Is well-maintained and clean • Is environmentally friendly • Pays attention to biodiversity, landscape and heritage • Has community involvement • Has a suitable a management plan In awarding the Green Flag, the assessment team commented: “The team has a range of complementary skills and seems to work well together. It is a forward-thinking, positive team who are open to new ideas and ways of working. There is still a lot of work to do, but a good start has been made. Thenew ‘friends’ group sounds like it has some keen and positive members.” Councillor Andrew Woodman, Portfolio Holder for Community Services at NWLDC, said: “Our parks team has worked tirelessly to make Coalville Park into a fantastic community space and they deserve a lot of credit for that. This is a huge feather in the cap for Coalville, no other park in the district has achieved Green Flag status and I hope this new award encourages more people to come and enjoy the park than ever before. We’re really pleased to be working with the new Friends of Coalville Park group on future plans and improvements. Bringing more people into Coalville is a big part of regenerating the town and this Green Flag award will only help us to achieve this aim.” Andy Sipika Chair of the Friends of Coalville Park added: “We are absolutely delighted to hear the good news about the Green Flag after everyone has worked so hard to achieve it. We’re looking forward to building on this and improving the park with better facilities and more events, so that more people come and enjoy our lovely park.”

MP Andrew Bridgen M: 01530 417736 E: andrew.bridgen.mp@parliament.uk
I am delighted that my first-choice candidate Boris Johnson, has become Prime Minister after beating Jeremy Hunt in a ballot by party members gaining an impressive 66.4 per cent share of the vote. His first speech outside 10 Downing Street and the following day in Parliament set out his extremely positive vision for the future of the United Kingdom and had a clear sense of purpose. Boris won the Conservative leadership election resoundingly thanks to his promises to deliver Brexit, unite the country and defeat Jeremy Corbyn. On the first pledge, he recognised in his speech that the referendum result in June 2016, when 61% of voters in North West Leicestershire voted for Brexit, was a 'fundamental decision' by the British people so that our laws would be made 'by people who accountable to them and who they can elect and who they can remove from office'. But beyond his enormously important clarity on Brexit and the opportunities to innovate which we can grasp as a result, there was a great deal else in Boris’s speech that will be good news for people in North West Leicestershire. Boris has promised to address the current appalling imbalance in school funding to ensure that every child – regardless of where he or she lives – can receive the best start in life. The is particularly important to our County where despite the fair funding changes of recent years, we still lag well behind the City of Leicester and are among the lowest funded county’s for Education per pupil in the country. There is also the pledge to recruit an extra 20,000 Police Officers starting immediately. This sends a clear message that we are committed to giving the police the resources they need to control crime and drive it down. The Prime Minister has also given commitments on mobile and broadband services guaranteeing ultra-fast broadband to every household or business premises by 2025. The issue that is dominating the media however is the Prime Minister’s pledge to leave the EU by 31st October “come what may”. I have always been clear that I would prefer to leave the EU with a deal, but I also believe that leaving without a deal would be far preferable to not leaving at all. The British people must be able to trust their politicians to deliver on their promises and I am confident that the UK will be able to thrive in the long-term with a no deal exit. The problem for the EU is that if they offer us a reasonable deal when we leave they are worried that every other member will also seek to leave on the same terms, I think this demonstrates clearly what a bad club we are currently a member of! Forbes has again ranked the UK has as the number one place to do business in the world for the second consecutive year and a survey published by KPMG has found that CEOs in the United States, India, China and Japan are even more likely to invest in the UK after we leave the EU. It is clear that without the “walk away position of No Deal”. then the EU will never entertain the idea of further negotiations or even getting rid of the Backstop to the Withdrawal Treaty which would leave us effectively under the control of the EU in perpetuity, without any representation and with no exit mechanism. The EU must believe that we can and will leave without a deal to get them to move away from their stubborn position of ‘the deal is the deal.’ If they stick to that line and are not willing to move at all, we must be prepared to give the country the finality it needs and just leave and to prepare businesses and people more broadly now for that eventuality. Business hates uncertainly and the biggest uncertainly has been our exit date, now our new PM has given that certainly, its the 31st October 2019. The fact is that the EU isn’t the only game in town and there are many opportunities for trade deals with the US, Latin America and Asia. The EU would do well to remember that in their attempts to colonise the UK. Even the EU admits that 80% plus of world economic growth with be outside of Europe over the next 20 years. In conclusion, I believe Boris’s message and energy will be incredibly popular. He can now unite the Conservative Party and the country to make his optimistic vision a reality if he stays strong and gets us out of the EU on the 31st of October. I intend to support the PM all the way.

Cllr Dr Terri Eynon T: 01530 832622 E: terri.eynon@leics.gov.uk
Time For The Leicester To Burton Line When George and Robert Stephenson set up business in the coalfields of north west Leicestershire, they built railway lines to carry their black gold far and wide. The Leicester to Burton line still carries freight and there are plans to upgrade the line and build a ‘temporary’ railhead at Sinope. The line will bring materials in to build the new fast HS2 rail line that passes through our district without stopping. I was with District Cllr John Legrys the Campaign to Reopen the Ivanhoe Line (CRIL) at the Century Theatre last month and am pleased to say that both City and County have spotted the obvious money-saving opportunity and are now backing a new feasibility study. Making Plans For Snibston I don’t suppose George and Robert Stephenson imagined Snibston mine as a scheduled ancient monument. Protected by Historic England the headstocks and associated listed buildings can never be demolished. Times have changed and, since the closure of the Discovery Museum, Leicestershire County Council has been preparing part of the site for sale to a housing developer. The pit top area is to be refurbished for leisure and educational activities. A new café will wrap around the Century Theatre creating space for rehearsals and education. A purpose made mountain bike trail and improved footpaths will draw people to the Country Park’s fishing lakes and nature trails and, on the site of the historic pit top, there will be a children’s playground, seating and external interpretation of the historic buildings. The whole project will be linked to the town centre via a foot path and cycle way along the colliery mineral line. Who Can We Trust? But will any of this ever happen? Coalville people have been let down so often it is hard not to be cynical. I have been attending regular Council-led stakeholder meetings along with members of Coalville Heritage Society and the Snibston and Coalville Preservation Group. An independent not-for-profit PHOTO: Stuart Warburton of charitable third-party membership, Snibston Heritage Trust inside organisation, the Snibston Heritage the mine control room Trust, formed from this group, is currently going through its application to the Charities Commission. The objectives are to provide knowledge and assistance to the County Council with the sole intention of opening the historic pit top to the public and ensure it is interpreted and accessible to schools, colleges, local people and tourists. Once the Trust is enacted it will work with other local heritage groups and apply for grants to assist with heritage developments at Snibston, including a new heritage centre for Coalville located in the historic mine buildings. Say ‘Hello, Heritage!’ To Snibston Mine If you want to learn more about Snibston developments and see inside the mine building on a colliery tour, for the first time since 2016, please put Sunday 8th September 12.00 noon – 5.00pm in your diary. There will be an open day at the Century Theatre on the same day. For more information go to Hello Heritage www.choosecoalville.co.uk

Currently all the decisions about the town are taken by members of the District Council cabinet which currently as NO elected members from Coalville on the cabinet. In fact the so-called ‘Coalville Champion’ is the Leader who does not live in the area or in the constituency. Cllr Michael Wyatt who is a passionate supporter and campaigner for our town said, “It’s time we took our Town back from the grips of those who have shown time and time again that they don’t understand the needs of the local residents. Many administrations past and present have failed, and continue to fail to deliver what the people and local businesses need to make our town a great place to visit and enjoy. I want to see our Town run by local people for local people and businesses who want to see our Town thrive again. We need to put Coalville back on the map, and I especially want to feel proud again of my town. This can only be achieved with the right democratic process in place, and elected councillors who actually care about our local area. Please help me to deliver a town council for Coalville so we can take back control of our future. It can only be done with your support. If Ashby and other places can have a town council then I’m sure Coalville can.” If you can help then please contact Michael who is currently collecting signatures for a Town Council for Coalville. All signatures in the petition must be hand written, which will be verified by the council’s legal team. Petition forms can be obtain on request by contacting Michael Wyatt direct on 07773341531 or alternatively send him an email milewyatt1@ hotmail.co.uk To sign you must be able to vote and you must live in the following areas which the town council will cover Bardon, Broom Leys (unparished area) Coalville East, Coalville West, Castle Rock, Greenhill, Snibston South, Snibston North. The petition can be signed at the following local businesses One Stop Shoe Repair Shop High St Lady J High St Alison’s Cafe High St Snibstone Inn public house Belvoir Rd Bitter & Twisted Micro Pub High St La Torre restaurant High St Thousands of leaflets are also currently being distributed in the areas affected so please if you get one return it with your signature as soon as possible, so it can be included in the submission to the council for consideration.
