Hollywood actor Stephen Graham swapped the film set for the classroom when he led an afternoon drama lesson at Ibstock Community College. The actor, who has appeared alongside Johnny Depp in ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’, spent two hours with students, answering their questions and leading a series of improvisation exercises. These included a technique called ‘hot seating’, where students were asked to embody a character, before being randomly selected to answer questions as that character. Drama teacher Chris Mould said: “Stephen Graham was fantastic and a really nice man. The students really loved his visit. “They found some of the tasks quite difficult but they rose to the challenge. They had lots of questions for Stephen, including ‘Why do you live round here?’!”. This was the first time that the locally-based actor had delivered a lesson at the college. He has previously visited Ibstock Day Nursery to read to the children.

Grace Dieu Manor School has always had a reputation for high achieving pupils and 2013 has confirmed this once again. The Key Stage 2 results have been record breaking, easily exceeding the expectation of the National Average. All Year 6 pupils achieved a Level 4 or 5 in their Reading Tests and 86% achieved Level 4 or 5 in their Punctuation, Grammar and Spelling Tests. Pupils scored similarly well in Mathematics. All Year 6 pupils gained a Level 4, 5 or 6, with one pupil scoring 100% on the Level 3-5 paper. Three pupils secured a Level 6 in Mathematics an exceptional achievement. Once again, Year 8 pupils performed outstandingly well in their senior school entry tests, and destination schools for Grace Dieu’s 13 year olds in 2013 included Ratcliffe College, Derby Grammar School, Loughborough Grammar and High Schools, Trent College and Repton School.

LABOUR CANDIDATE SPEAKS UP ON COST OF LIVING CRISIS
CHRISTMAS CRACKERS FOR ALL THE FAMILY From thigh-slapping pantomime to gift stalls and from winter walks to snowman trails... there’s something for everyone in the entertainment on offer in Leicestershire in the build-up to Christmas. Museums, libraries and theatre venues will be staging a festive feast of events from November and continuing right into the New Year. Richard Blunt, Leicestershire County Council Cabinet member for museums and libraries, said: “These festive events are designed for the whole family and will, hopefully, get everyone truly into the Christmas spirit.
Labour and Co-operative Parliamentary candidate for North West Leicestershire Jamie McMahon has launched his campaign for 2015 by speaking up on Britain’s cost of living crisis. Jamie argues that whether it’s energy prices, the cost of food or stagnant wages local people are struggling and need a government that will act. Jamie said: “Prices have grown faster than wages in all but one month since David Cameron became Prime Minister over three years ago, meaning people are worse off. We may have minimal growth finally back into the economy but local people in Coalville certainly aren’t feeling the benefit.” Jamie and North West Leicestershire Labour have been campaigning locally in Coalville on the need to help people with the cost of living crisis. Asking people their views on Labour’s Energy Price freeze and running a petition calling for David Cameron to freeze energy bills now.
Other seasonal highlights include: . Guided walks, including Boxing Day, and birds of prey displays at Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre. . Crafts, stories, songs and bargain buys at various libraries. . Arts workshops at Charnwood and Melton Carnegie museums. . Seasonal festivities at Donington-Le-Heath Manor House. . ‘Twilight challenge’ at Beaumanor Hall. . New Year play-scheme at King Edward VII Sports Centre, Melton. To find out more visit : www.snibston.com www.bosworthbattlefield.com www.leics.gov.uk/libraries www.leics.gov.uk/museums For a full list of seasonal activities, visit: www.leics.gov.uk/whatson or, for a list of children’s events, visit: www.leics.gov.uk/schoolholidayevents
“It is clear people want to see their energy bills frozen. Prices are rising and profits soaring. That’s why Labour will freeze energy prices until 2017 if elected at the next General Election, helping people while we take the time to fix the market and beef up the regulator. Labour will help people locally.” Jamie concluded. Make your views known on Britain’s cost of living crisis by contacting Jamie on 01530 277825 or jamie@jamie4nwl.co.uk
WYATT CALLS ON DISTRICT COUNCIL TO TALK AGAIN TO PRECINCT OWNERS SO WE CAN HAVE AN OPEN MARKET IN COALVILLE Councillor Michael Wyatt has today called on the Council to think again about spending £150,000 on Coalville Market and instead try again to convince the owners of the Precinct to allow an open Market through the middle of the Shopping Centre. Cllr Michael Wyatt said, “In November, the food and drinks festival proved that having stalls in the open through the precinct not only brought extra shoppers to Coalville but it also brought extra trade to many of the local businesses. Having an open Market through the precinct could be beneficial to everyone, and help many local businesses who are struggling to keep a float. “Spending £150,00 on the current Market Hall is a complete waste of public money. I have been around long enough to know that the Market is no longer viable, or a place where shoppers want to spend their money. The Council and the Precinct owners needs to wake up and move with the times. I know the Council have already spoken to the Precinct owners about this idea but after Saturday’s huge success both Parties need to look again at the reasons to why it cannot happen and look at the huge advantages it could have on the local economy and Coalville.”

STEPHENSON COLLEGE STUDENT VOCATIONAL SKILLS’ PROJECTS ADMIRED BY PRINCESS ANNE Students from Stephenson College in Coalville had the chance to showcase their talents to royalty when Princess Anne visited their exhibition stand at The Skills Show 2013. The princess, who was given a guided tour by college principal Nigel Leigh, chatted with students about their motor vehicle maintenance skills project, which included a race car built as part of the college’s HNC and HND courses. Her Royal Highness was attending the show at Birmingham’s NEC in her role as patron and president of City & Guilds, a main sponsor of the three-day event. The Skills Show, which this year saw attendee numbers grow from 73,000 in 2012 to more than 90,000, celebrates the value of vocational skills and the excellent career opportunities they provide to future generations. It was also sponsored by a group of 20 colleges, which included Stephenson College. Mr Leigh said: “The princess took a lot of interest in our projects and was keen to know how we develop courses to meet the particular employment needs of our geographical area. “She also asked about initiatives such as our studio school which provides the bridge from school into work.” And the Princess Royal was not the only VIP to admire the students’ skills. Retail magnate Theo Paphitis, formerly of BBC’s Dragons’ Den fame, also visited the stand, as did Skills Minister Matthew Hancock. The race car proved to be a major attraction, with hundreds of school children taking up the challenge to realign its wheels using a laser beam. Mike Harvey, lecturer in motor vehicle maintenance at Stephenson College, said: “We’ve had a constant stream of young people – including girls – stopping at our stand to have a go. “It’s been very popular and we’ve succeeded in opening their eyes to the great career opportunities the motor industry has to offer.
“There is so much more to the trade than leaning over a car bonnet clutching a spanner. The UK is the world’s leading manufacturer of Formula One cars and jobs in the sector encompass everything from vehicle maintenance and diagnostics through to engineering design, motor retail and customer service. “Our college also has long established links with motor manufactures such as Volvo as well as truck companies like Ryder and Veolia and they’ve been very impressed with what we’re doing.” Stephenson College’s Hair and Beauty stand was an equally big draw with the show’s young visitors. Student Floriann Joyce said she had been run off her feet’ as hundreds of school girls came to the stand for feather extensions in their hair. Hair and Beauty School’s lecturer Georgi Hunter added: “A lot of our visitors wanted to talk to us about careers in hair and beauty, which is great. Taking part in this show has also been good practice for our students and has done a lot for their confidence.“Literally hundreds of people have queued to have our feather extensions, including a few boys who were disappointed to find that their hair was too short for them.”

IN MEMORY OF PETER BAKER WHO DIED 13.11.13 A cup of tea at Pete Baker’s house was an invitation into a golden treasury. With roguish charm and a storehouse of local gossip, he wasn’t a Labour man. Always good for a story, Peter had little time for party politics, but had a respect for those who took the time to ask the right questions. Ask his opinion on a little local difficulty, such as the unofficial footpath between Wyggeston Road and North Avenue, and you entered a postwar Coalville of small industrial factories and learnt how our local housing estates had been grafted on their dereliction. Anyone who wanted to make a difference in Coalville knew the path to Pete Baker’s door. An unassuming oracle, his passing leaves a gap that will take some filling. With respect from all on ‘our side’ that knew Pete Baker. Rest in Peace.

COALVILLE AIR CADETS SUPPORT TROOPS FOR
A
ir cadets from (1188) Coalville Sqn are supporting the troops abroad by sending them shoeboxes full of gifts for Christmas. Air cadets from (1188) Coalville Sqn are joining with Leicestershire Police to send shoeboxes of gifts to all the military police officers serving in Afghanistan. This continues a tradition started in the First World War, when troops in the trenches received a small brass box containing sweets and tobacco from the Government.
Flying Officer R Harrison RAF VR (T) said ”I am really proud of the cadets for giving so generously and with such enthusiasm year after year, the parcels looked fantastic when wrapped up. I think it is very important to support a scheme like this I know it is a real boost to the troop’s morale.” Flight Lieutenant Jackie Glover RAF VR(T), the Commanding Officer said “I am really pleased the squadron is taking part in this initiative again this year and I am glad to be able to contribute myself.”
The cadets and their families have collected: - sweets, puzzle books, magazines, stationery, festive things and toiletries to send to the troops. They have all been carefully packaged up into shoeboxes, making sure each one weighs less than 2 kg to take advantage the Royal Mail’s free postage to the troops. The cadets sent 18 shoeboxes in all, to army Police officers serving in Afghanistan. Over the years the squadron has received letters of thanks and also been visited by grateful troops. Over the last 8 years the squadron has sent over 170 parcels to the troops.
1188 (Coalville) Squadron is currently recruiting cadets both male and female. If you are aged 13 – 18 and would like to join the local air cadets they meet in the headquarters on Forest Road in Coalville on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7.15 pm until 9.30 pm. If you are interested in joining please visit the Squadron and speak to the Officer in charge or visit the squadron website. www.1188squadron.co.uk

Gifts, decorations and festive food were on sale at Ibstock Community College’s popular Christmas craft fair. Some of the said it certainly opened his eyes. stalls were run by students, who sold their own, handcrafted Christmas creations, including tree decorations showcasing their textile skills and clay craftwork. Students were also selling handmade, miniature Christmas cakes baked and decorated in their creative enterprise sessions. Other stalls were run by local people selling cards, gifts and Christmas crafts. The whole event helped to raise £675 towards college funds.

HELP TO BUY PROPERTY NOVICES ADVISED TO AVOID ‘CALL CENTRE CONVEYANCING’ Buyers taking advantage of Government backed low deposit mortgages have been advised to make sure they don’t ruin their dreams by making poor conveyancing decisions. The warning from Quality Solicitors Mander Cruickshank comes as the house price market enjoys its most buoyant time in years due to the Government’s Help to Buy scheme, which started in November. The scheme allows 95% mortgages and has led to recent house price growth, with Leicestershire’s property market receiving a huge boost. Jim Abbott, a senior partner at Quality Solicitors Mander Cruickshank said the public has to be made aware that poor quality property legal assistance is in some cases leading to sales collapsing in the worst case, and at the bare minimum placing great loads of stress to everyone involved in the buying process. Mr Abbott, whose firm has offices in Coalville and Hinckley, said: “Buying property is the most expensive transactions in most people’s lives and what all buyers need, is complete reassurance that the sale and purchase of the property is being handled in a professional and transparent way that can alert you to potential pitfalls and release as much as possible the burden of stress.” He said Quality Solicitors Mander Cruickshank has been called on in many cases to help buyers frustrated that their purchase was going to fall through due to ‘call centre conveyancing.’ “We sometimes hear of buyers going with the firm recommended by the estate agents, which is often poorly trained operatives in call centre conveyancing environments. Generally the buyers end up suffering greatly as the wholly inadequate experience of dealing purely over phone with faceless people overseeing the most expensive financial transaction of their lives takes its toll,” he added. “There are people ready to move who think everything is in place and ready for the big day only to have the rug swept from under their feet by some faceless individual, who just treats you as a number,” added Mr Abbott, whose firm have been in Coalville since 1923. “While we hope that your property transactions runs smoothly sometimes they can be complex and that is why a strong relationship is needed between a home buyer and their solicitor,” he added. “With most property transactions involving six figured fees nowadays good independent local law firms making sure that every detail has been looked at correctly, and acting in the client’s interest is by far the most sensible option,” he added. Anyone wishing to speak to Quality Solicitors Mander Cruickshank about property issues can do so on 01530 510666.

DOUBLE SUCCESS FOR COALVILLE RUGBY CLUB
ELLISTOWN AND BATTLEFLAT PARISH COUNCIL A local Parish Council, Ellistown and Battleflat, has just demolished a Sports Pavilion at South Street in Ellistown after a long battle to preserve it from vandalism and wanton destruction. The Sports Pavilion, which had supported a thriving programme of sports when the mining industry was around, had become dilapidated and unsafe and very expensive to look after. Over the last two years the Parish Council had spent over £12,000 firstly in trying to safeguard young people from the dangers of entering the derelict building and more recently the costs of knocking it down. “It’s very sad” said Parish Council clerk, Paul Goodman. “It was basically a good building. What a shame that it has been necessary to spend the money in this way when it could have been used to revive community sports on the South Street Playing Fields”. Now the Parish Council has hopes of working with the District Council and others to re-introduce active sport at the Playing Fields. If it is successful in generating the interest the Parish Council will be seeking to provide a more robust, and antivandal, changing facility for the future.
Coalville RFC was celebrating after scooping two trophies at the 2013 North West Leicestershire Local Sports Alliance Sports Awards. Last season was the club’s most successful in its 110th year history. ‘These awards are the icing on the cake and are recognition of the work that is being done by our volunteers to ensure that we remain a success both on and off the field,’ commented Club President Tom Siddon. ‘It was particularly pleasing to see our young volunteers rewarded. They are an integral part of the club and with some of them being RFU World Cup Young Ambassadors it promises to be an interesting lead up to the World Cup.’ Coalville RFC was awarded the ‘Club of the Year’ award for the community work that has been done. This has included coaching in local primary and secondary schools, organising children’s tournaments and working closely with the Leicester Tigers’ community coaching team.
If you know of sports leaders in the area who would like to help in the process the Parish Council wants to hear from you. Please email the clerk, Paul Goodman, at ellistown@yahoo.co.uk
BREATHE EASY NORTH WEST LEICS: GROUP NEWS We have rebranded our exercise classes as ‘Exercise your Lungs’ Coalville, purely to separate from our social side which continues to operate under the BreatheEasy banner, this is for financial reasons, and to keep our banking accounts separate, otherwise we are continuing as previously with no alteration to our activities. In November we held our Annual General Meeting and elected our new committee for the next twelve months, and in December we will be having a Christmas party, this is a joint affair with the both social and exercise sides of our group joining together, each member bringing along goodies for us to share. Anyone who may be interested in joining our merry band, can come along and join us at our party, to see the make up of our club, and to get in the festive spirit. The Coalville Labour Club, Bridge Road, Coalville, LE67 3PW
The club’s U16s were also celebrating after winning the Community Award. They have helped out at the Woodstock in Whitwick charity event, volunteered at two national rugby tournaments, qualified as RFU Young Leaders and players regularly help out with coaching and officiating within the club. Junior Coordinator, Shane Fox added, ‘It’s looking promising for the future. By creating an environment whereby players are committed to helping others as well as being devoted to their own progression as athletes, we hope to ensure that Coalville RFC remains a sustainable and successful local sporting club.’

Its First Year of Trading The 1st Oct saw The One Stop Shoe Repair on the High Street celebrate its first year of trading. Ryan quite clearly has a fantastic rapport with his customers and has many years of experience in the trade. However he took the decision to open his own business because he felt he needed a new challenge! It’s obvious he has risen to this as many of his customers are extremely loyal and most visit his shop due to a recommendation from a friend. His first year of trading has gone extremely well and the continual flow of smiling customers greeted with a cheery ‘hello’ whilst we were there is testament to his approachable demeanour.
