Rugby Club gets Full Accreditation Coalville Rugby Club has achieved full club accreditation from the Rugby Football Union for the organisation and running of its facilities and the various sections of its membership. They were recently presented with the award by Leicestershire Rugby Union President Paul Green. “A team of people has worked very hard to ensure that we meet the requirements of the accreditation. We’re a large organisation with over 300 members and ensuring that the club is run progressively takes a huge amount of work. This award is testament to our volunteers’ efforts and allows us to develop our facilities and plan for the future,” commented Coalville RFC President, Tom Siddon. The accreditation means that the club has met criteria including player recruitment, community links and elite player development. As well as the Clubmark award, the club was also presented with a certificate for women and girls’ rugby development. “It’s great to visit a successful Leicestershire club and present this award. Leicestershire Rugby Union is proud of the way its clubs are managed and Coalville is a large and well run club that are a credit to the local community,” added Paul Green.
Council Back Down on Charges In January of this year, North West Leics District Council wrote to over 200 residents across the District informing them that in future they would need a licence to cross over Council land. Charges would be £90 for driving over and £20 for walking over Council land to get to their properties. The Council will now be writing to the vast majority of those affected informing them they can have access to Council land at no charge. Many of these residents had been walking out of their back gardens on to Council land and driving their cars to park on their back gardens for many years with no charges. The letters from North West Leics District Council angered many residents and led to a joint campaign by residents and the Labour opposition on North West Leics District Council against the charges.
Dave De Lacy, Councillor for Ibstock and Heather led the campaign for Labour against the charges. The campaign gained widespread local support and received a lot of publicity - Dave De Lacy and local residents from areas across NWLeics were interviewed on TV and Radio on several occasions. As support grew for the campaign and publicity increased the full Council met on 26th February. Councillor De Lacy proposed at this meeting that the new charges for access be withdrawn and that a fundamental review should take place. At this meeting the Conservative controlled Council agreed to suspend the process and undertake a full review. The review, which involved two meetings of the Council`s Policy Development Group and also local Councillors in all the affected wards culminated at a meeting of
Redgate g Farm Animal Sanctuary y
Open Day and Dog Show Shaw Lane/Billa Barra Lane (off the A511), between Markfield and Coalville
the Cabinet of North West Leics District on 11th June . It was agreed at this meeting that the vast majority of residents will not now have to pay a licence fee and the Council will write and clarify their right to access Council land at no charge. Charges will still apply, in a very few areas mainly where there were already existing licences but the cost of these licences will remain at the existing rate of £35 for residents and businesses and not the much higher charges that were originally being proposed. Councillor De Lacy said “Labour Councillors did propose in the review that there should be no charges for any residents. That was not accepted by the Conservative majority but these new proposals are a massive improvement on the original position and this decision will be welcomed by residents across North West Leics. I would thank all the residents who took part in the campaign – this was a victory for common sense.”

Skills ‘Exchanged’ at MRC Community Garden Geraint Jones, Chairman of North West Leicestershire District Council, was on hand to open the new resource at MRC which is to be used as the focus for an innovative skills exchange scheme. Councillor Jones congratulated the members of the Prince’s Trust team programme who have volunteered their time to provide a new meeting place for local people. Sarah Phoenix, MRC Community Exchange Officer, said “The Community Exchange provides local people an opportunity to either try something completely new, improve their existing skills and share their skills with others - as the project moves into its next phase we want to create opportunities for people to share a wide variety of skills including horticulture. People can use their time in the garden to raise their confidence, improve their wellbeing and increase their social skills”. A team of MRC volunteers headed by Kayleigh Burrows joined with Sally McNaughton, one of the Team Leaders of the Coalville branch of The Princes Trust - Leicestershire Fire and Rescue who co-ordinated a team of enthusiastic 16 -25 year old volunteers to transform the plot of derelict, overgrown land into a community garden filled with a wide variety of vegetables and a seating area to enjoy whilst taking a break from all the hard work. Sally said “All the volunteers have worked really hard on the garden and they should all be very proud of what they have created for the local community” Sally added “Some of the Prince’s Trust volunteers also raised funds to pay for the items needed to complete the first phase of garden as well as spending countless hours working in it”. The garden will become the base for a community garden group which starts on Tuesday 16th July at 12 noon, If you are interested in joining the Community Garden Team or want to find out more about MRC Commex call Sarah Phoenix at The Marlene Reid Centre on 01530 510515 or email commex@mrc.uk.net.

Coalville charity manager calls for support at No. 10 reception Branch Manager of Coalville-based charity ENRYCH Leicestershire and Derbyshire, Colin Edis, attended a Downing Street reception hosted by Samantha Cameron on Tuesday 30 April. Colin was joined by volunteers Lisa Frattaroli from Quorn, and Kimberley Harris, a student from De Montfort University, and after hearing speeches from Mrs Cameron and senior ENRYCH staff, networked with business leaders and politicians. TV auctioneer Philip Serrell and broadcaster and ENRYCH patron Graeme Garden also co-hosted a pledge auction which saw guests promise to involve themselves with the charity beyond the evening. In total 40 pledges were made ranging from visiting a local ENRYCH branch, sponsoring an event, to finding out about becoming a trustee. The charity also used the reception to launch its new strategic plan and hopes the event will lead to new sources of funding and support for its work in ensuring availability of leisure and learning opportunities for adults with a physical disability. Colin said: “We were delighted Mrs Cameron responded to our request to host a reception as opportunities to illustrate and demonstrate our work to such an influential audience are rare. “Our projects currently have waiting lists of people in need of our support so we are urgently in need of new volunteers who can spare even just a few hours a week. As a small charity with limited resources and no government funding, finding new donors and volunteers is a very real challenge, especially in the current financial climate.” As well as running a volunteer scheme, ENRYCH also employs personal assistants who support adults with disabilities throughout Leicestershire and Derbyshire. The charity also runs a Healthy Living Group in Coalville which provides chair-based aerobics. If you could spare an hour a week or a fortnight and would like to share a favourite leisure pastime with someone with a physical disability in your area of Leicestershire or Derbyshire, please contact Colin Edis on 01530 832 926 or email colin.edis@enrych.org.uk Formerly Ryder-Cheshire Volunteers, ENRYCH has a 26-year history of enabling adults with a physical disability to enjoy culture, leisure, learning and sporting opportunities through partnership with a volunteer. The charity supports its members to tailor their own service to increase self-confidence, develop independence, meet people with the same interests, reduce social isolation, have fun and engage with their communities. www.enrych.org.uk

A huge thank you. That’s what the organisers of the Coalville Twenty13 event, which was held last Sunday, are saying to the local community, stall holders, food providers and the entertainers who came out on a rainy day to Coalville Park. What could have been a total wash out was a great success despite the weather. The day saw around 3000 people go along to the Park where they enjoyed themselves by getting involved in the Circus workshops, being creative in the arts and crafts marquees, watching the Morris Men, and listening to the fantastic quality bands on the main stage. Community stall holders braved the weather all day long and welcomed people to their stall with a big smile. The event was compered by Jon Sketchley from Hermitage FM and there was a visit from Radio Leicester’s Treasure Hunt programme. Councillor Alison Smith MBE, North West Leicestershire District Council’s Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Community Services said: “This community day has an excellent reputation for being a quality event where families can come along and watch, take part and listen to a variety of activities – all for free. The support from our local community for this event was amazing. The weather was very unpredictable with heavy showers and yet people stayed around, sheltered in the marquees or under trees and generally had a good time.”

Complaints About Grass Verges County Councillor Michael Wyatt has again complained about the state of our grass verges to the County Council after learning the contractors failed to cut several grass verges in the local area. Cllr Wyatt has recieved over 30 complaints so far. Cllr Michael Wyatt said, "The state of our grass verges is making our local area look a complete mess. The contractors have yet again failed in their duty to carry out a simple instruction to make sure our grass verges are properly maintained. I really do think its time the contractors were given their marching orders. It's now another year of failure. Clearly the taxpayers are not getting value for money, and the County Council Tory Bosses need to get a grip with this growing problem. Where the contractors have cut the grass verges all they have done is either left a mess or failed to adequately cut the grass properly. I would urge everyone to complain. Its clearly not good enough."

In June we welcomed Linda Durkin to our meeting to talk to us about Fair Trade. We learnt that through fair trade individuals and communities are able to make better trading conditions and promote sustainability. Fair trade takes the middleman out of trade, advocates the payment of a higher price to exporters as well as higher social and environmental standards,so that more profit goes to the family or co-operative. It focuses in particular on exports from developing countries to developed countries. One example that Linda gave us was that of Gideon who lived in the Windward Islands. His father was a banana producer struggling to make a living for his family, Gideon worked as local tour guide to help boost the family’s meagre finances. When Fairtrade became involved the family’s business was transformed, so much so that Gideon was able to give up his job as a tour guide and concentrate all his efforts into sustaining and improving the now successful family banana business. Fair trade organisations fight poverty through trade and helping people in developing countries to transform their lives. Linda brought a wide variety of Traidcraft goods with her ranging from beautifully designed cards to gorgeous jewellery, from delicious food to practical presents and many more too numerous to mention. We were able to shop till we dropped in the process of helping many people who work hard to make a success of their lives for themselves and their families. From July 2013 we are moving to a new venue we shall now meet at the Marlene Reid Centre on Belvoir Road in Coalville. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 16th July at the Marlene Reid Centre. The meeting starts at 7.30 and there will be a talk about self-help and treatment with flower remedies given by ‘Bach Flower Remedies’. Visitors are always welcome.

Charity Fund Raiser at St Wilfrid’s Church. Father Colin Patey and his congregation welcomed Coalville Male Voice Choir for a fund rising concert. The Concert very kindly sponsored by Jan Stratton raised just under £600. The two charities who are to benefit are CAFOD, Catholic Aid For Overseas Development, the main Catholic Aid Charity in England and Wales, and the Bamenda Water Project, a project special to St Wilfrid's Parish. The latter aims to provide water for a community in Cameroon through a daughter monastery of Mount St Bernard. The Choir as always were on fine fettle with a blend of Choral pieces, solo’s and an original monologue by The Choir’s Chairman, Mr Brian Wardle. All wrapped up by compere of the night Mr David Flick. Jan Stratton also performed a moving piece on his Zither. Not only did the Choir sound great but with the thanks of a Midland Co-operative Grant the Choir has been fortunate enough to purchase a new concert piano. Father Colin Patey said “The Coalville Male Voice Choir Concert at St Wilfrid's Church was a lovely event. The music had great variety, provided something for all tastes and was sensitively performed. The atmosphere of the evening was warm and happy. The parish was delighted for the funds raised for two of its charities. It was a great community event." The Choir will next be performing at the Palace at Ibstock on Saturday 31st August. Partnership encourages applications for Respect funding The Safer North West Partnership has launched the ‘Respect in North West Leicestershire’ scheme for 2013-14. This scheme provides grants for organisations, community groups and schools to carry out projects which promote respect in their local communities. Councillor Trevor Pendleton, Chair of the Safer North West Partnership said, “This year we are inviting organisations, businesses, groups of individuals and schools to bid for funding. The funding would be used to start or continue initiatives which support our Partnership’s priorities which are focusing on anti-social behaviour, tackling crime and supporting our communities.” The Respect scheme forms part of the Council’s partnership with the County Council, Leicestershire Police, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service, The Probation Service, housing services among others. Last year four local schemes, Friends of Sharpley Park, Oakthorpe Youth Club, Snibston Youth and Positive Futures benefitted by receiving Respect funding. They received their awards at a ceremony which is held at, and sponsored by, the Radisson Blu East Midlands Airport Hotel. Amanda Hanton, Volunteer Development Officer at Snibston Youth said, “The funding we received has enabled new members to join the group and has been used to launch an apprentice scheme to train a young person as a group leader. I would encourage everyone to apply to this fantastic scheme.” Further information and application forms are available on North West Leicestershire District Council’s website www.nwleicestershire.gov.uk The closing date for applications is 19th July 2013

Coalville Comes Alive Festival The Coalville Comes Alive Festival which took place last Saturday, 22nd June, was a fantastic success. The street arts festival, programmed and organised by Mantle Arts attracted audiences to the Belvoir Shopping Centre, where they were faced by a giant musical dragon, a show that took place inside an aluminium whale, and an inflatable lobster. Mantle Director Matthew Pegg said, “We were concerned that the weather would put people off, but it didn’t rain and we estimate that at least 2000 people turned up, probably more.” The aims of the festival were to provide something exciting and fun for local people and to attract more visitors into Coalville and the shopping centre. Local bed and breakfast establishments benefitted from more guests and shops in the Belvoir Centre reported an increase in sales. Favourite acts included Edmond Tahl, a walkabout character with a sound system in his briefcase, which gives the impression that he is constantly pursued by invisible dogs, police, and breaking glass. Anyone of the public with a shopping trolley, pram or anything on wheels, suddenly developed loud squeaky wheels. The Lovely Labourers were the opposite of the usual rowdy workmen, offering passers by tea, poetry and compliments. More than a hundred people ventured into the giant whale, which houses a tiny theatre seating one or two people. There they were told a story by Jonah the mariner, sung a song and given a tiny gift. It was described by one audience member as ‘just lovely’. Matthew Pegg said, “It was a great day. What with the Coalville 2013 event in the park on the Sunday and the upcoming motor show, there’s a lot that Coalville has to offer. It would be great if Coalville Comes Alive could become a regular event. In the current climate everyone needs to have something to make them smile and that’s what we achieved this year.”

99.2 Hermitage FM are on the move Customers at HermitageFM get a warm welcome from Mrs H when they drop in to the coffee shop on Hotel Street Coalville. Her smile is even brighter now that the radio station has had some good news. East Midlands Housing have offered to let them use the former doctor’s surgery in Memorial Square. It has been standing empty since ‘Care and Repair’ moved out a while back. North West Leicestershire District Council have backed the plans and it is now all systems go. HermitageFM is more than just a radio station. Born as an offshoot of Leicestershire’s hospital radio service, it is serves the whole community. Bringing people together through the air-waves, it also brings new opportunities by providing work-placements for people with disabilities and hosting adult learning sessions and other small community groups. County Councillor Terri Eynon, a volunteer presenter on the Folk Programme, says ‘This is great news for Coalville. HermitageFM has put North West Leicestershire on the map for music events. It is great that they have outgrown their current building. The new venue is at the heart of our community in Memorial Square. Being in bigger better premises will give more people a chance to get involved in whatever way they can’. Drop into the coffee shop if you want to share in 99.2HermitageFM’s good news story. You might even get on the radio!

North West Leics: Group News At the June meeting of the social side of our group we had a very informative talk about the various inhalers and medications used in the treatment of lung disease. This included how the different medications work. How best to use the different types of your inhalers (bronchodilators), both the short acting and the long acting types, combination inhalers and also the various tablets used. This information was most useful as not only did it keep us informed about the latest developments in the treatment of pulmonary disease, it also acted as a refresher into the use of our different medications. Our next meeting, on July 10th. see’s us taking an afternoon trip out to Ulverscroft Manor, with a chance to walk the nature trails, see the model railway layout, enjoy the views and partake in their excellent refreshments. The weekly exercise classes are going from strength to strength, with a most pleasing increase in membership, but there is still room for more. Come along and join us, the various exercises are aimed at increasing your wellbeing and making it possible to better to handle your physical disabilities, besides enjoying the camaraderie of others with similar problems. Our meetings are held at Coalville Labour Club, Bridge Road, Coalville, on the second Wednesday of each month, from 2.00 – 4.00PM for the social group, and each Thursday, 3.00 – 4.00PM for the exercise class. For more information ring Eunice on 07790 278435, who will be glad to help.
Love Parks Week 27 July - 4 August 2013
More than 30 million of us in England make good use of our parks – a tenth of us visit one daily, and more than half of us visit one every week. Now there is even a week to ‘celebrate’ our local parks. Certainly a daily walk in the park has been found to be good for your health: not only does the exercise help prevent serious diseases, but it has been found that walking in green spaces can help to reduce stress (unless your dog has run off and vanished!) This year, Love Parks Week will celebrate our parks with everything from jazz nights to nature trails to street dancing. For a list of what you might find near you, visit www.loveparksweek.org

lville A Hu Touch2Tag Rugby at Coa Coalville Rugby Club hosted a free touch and tag rugby taster sessions at its Memorial Ground on 14 May. It was open to ages 13 to adult and is a great opportunity for women and men to try out the exciting noncontact forms of the game. Touch and tag rugby, staples of antipodean sporting culture, are some of the fastest growing sports in Britain. The Touch2Tag sessions will allow local people to play both sports in a relaxed environment that is being run in the ‘pitch up and play’ style. Ex-Leicester Tigers player and Coalville RFC’s Director of Rugby, Steve Redfern commented, ‘The Touch2Tag sessions are a great way to experience two very exciting sports. They appeal to those who currently play rugby but are also ideal ways to get fit with healthy team competition for those that want to try something new.’

MOULETTES Moulettes have been playing together for several years now. After a couple of EPs and singles they released an acclaimed debut album on Balling The Jack/Sotones in 2010, which found its way on to several Best Of The Year lists. They also won an Innovation Award from the prestigious Fatea roots-music website. Their charismatic, idiosyncratic brand of modern folk music – which incorporates elements of prog-rock, indie, Classical, jazz and blues – enthralled crowds at many festivals, including Larmer Tree, Glastonbury, Big Session and Latitude, where they played BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction stage.
The superb facilities will be complimented by a highly trained team of stylists who will spend months perfecting their techniques under the careful supervision of Lee Stafford.
Members of Moulettes have recently performed and/or recorded with Mumford & Sons, Seasick Steve, John Paul Jones, Paloma Faith, Bonobo and Paul Heaton of The Beautiful South. Ex-Moulette Ted Dwane, now of Mumford & Sons returned to the fold in summer 2011 to help record the band’s second album, The Bear’s Revenge, out now and garnering excellent reviews from the likes of The Guardian, FT and Q, Songlines, Saga (!) and R2 magazines amongst others. It is accompanied by the single Sing Unto Me which also includes 5 luscious b-sides and remixes.
To find out more about The Lee Stafford Academies please call 07814 691748.
Stephenson College recently promoted ‘An evening with Lee Stafford’ at the Coalville campus where Lee mesmerised the audience with some stunning hair demonstrations, punctuated by interesting tips and funny stories. The following day the Lee Stafford ‘roadshow’ then rolled into the Broadmarsh Centre in Nottingham where he entertained many of the interested shoppers. Nigel Leigh, Principal at Stephenson College said “Lee is an excellent ambassador for his profession and is passionate about education and raising standards within the hairdressing industry. He is a role model for aspiring young hairdressers.”
Other guests on the recent recordings include acclaimed folk-blues songstress Liz Green, Irish flute and whistle player Ríoghnach Connolly of the estimable Honeyfeet, silverthroated Laura Hockenhull and virtuoso banjo-ist, Matt Menefee of American nu-bluegrass band Cadillac Sky. Moulettes’ entrancing combination of strings and the celestial; wind and weirdness; rhythm and murder has lead to comparisons with the the Unthanks, Tom Waits and Shostakovitch. But, they have a sound and presence all of their own. Unmissable and destined for the heights. Catch them at The Vic in Coalville on Sept 6th adm ticket £8

Weightcare Raise £1,250 for Rainbows Members of well-known local slimming group Weightcare recently held sponsored events to raise a fantastic £1250 for Loughborough based children’s hospice Rainbows. Weightcare’s Coalville class members took part in a 9 week sponsored slim in conjunction with class member George Walton’s “Big Bike Ride” for Rainbows. This was followed by a 5 mile fun walk at Hick’s Lodge in Moira. Weightcare members from Coalville, Ashby, Shepshed and Whitwick took part in the walk - there were one or two blisters and sore ankles at the end but everyone enjoyed themselves and agreed it was well worth the effort! Pictured is Elaine Bartlett with members of her Coalville Weightcare class who took part, presenting a cheque to Rainbow’s Ambassador, David. Elaine said “As a local company we are delighted to be able to raise funds for Rainbows. Our class members have come together and pulled out all the stops. I’d like to thank everyone who took part for making it such a tremendous success.”
