BEING PAIN-FREE IS PRICELESS

Dr Ye and John at Coalville Acupuncture

A life free from crippling pain that wrecked his body for more than 30 years is the happy result gained by Coalville man John Smith – and it’s all down to acupuncture by Herbal Healing. The 68-year-old company director had long suffered terrible pain in his back, resulting from the wearingaway of discs at the bottom section of his spine. He could no longer enjoy his life because of it. One day it got so bad that he even had to stop walking his beloved dog. That’s when he rang doctor Ye at Herbal Healing for help. He’d been recommended to try the Belvoir Road clinic by his optician who knew how bad his pain was

John said: “As soon as I rang the clinic, doctor Ye said to come in straight away for help. From the start, he and his colleague Jane were lovely people and very thorough. They understood and had time for me – the first session must have been two hours - and they actually listen and treat me as an individual, not just tick boxes.” That was November 3 and since then John has been to the clinic for treatment regularly. He has seen a vast improvement and no longer relies on the morphine patches, painkillers and anti-depressants that were prescribed by medics. He says the difference is truly amazing. He explained: “I was 32 when my back first gave way. It was down to my job - a lot of very heavy work, lifting playground equipment in muddy fields and getting posts out of solid ground in all weathers. I had never ever had a day off in my life before that but I was then off for five months, in hospital twice during that time.”

John had been diagnosed with degeneration of the spine – x-rays showed some discs had disappeared altogether. Nothing medics could do with drugs, or through the hospital pain clinic, seemed to help, yet his visits to the Coalville acupuncture clinic have worked wonders. He said: “They are such wonderful people that my wife and I feel privileged to know them. I’m a positive-minded person but used to be in tears when I tried to walk the dog. Now I can happily do a whole circuit.” He added: “Drugs and chemicals of western medicine all have side effects which may end up causing other problems.” “I would strongly advise anyone being treated for pain to pick up the phone and call the acupuncture centre on 01530 810888.” Coalville Acupuncture, Belvoir House, Belvoir Road, Coalville, LE67 3PN

Enrych will build on the work of Leicestershire County Council Careonline, which is being decommissioned at the end of December. The funding has been awarded by the Big Lottery Fund, the largest funder of community activity in the UK. Enrych chair Miriam McKee said; “We recognise the good work done by Careonline over many years in aiding individuals with a disability to have access to IT skills through training and support on a one to one basis. The National Lottery has given Enrych a great opportunity to build upon this work. At Enrych we will be providing support in the use of a range of equipment including iPhones, iPads, computers etc. to improve skills and also access services such as - FaceTime, Apps, Facebook, Skype and move with emerging changes in technology.” Enrych was founded in 1986 by Leonard Cheshire and Sue Ryder to support people with disabilities to be able to take part in both leisure and learning opportunities of their choice and, by doing so, reduce social isolation and increase their confidence. Colin Edis, Enrych Development Officer commented: “We are very aware of the difficulties faced by people with disabilities, not least of which can be social isolation, and so we see this new service as an important way of developing resilience and wellbeing among young and old”

New Market And Events Space Coming Soon To A Former Pub In Coalville Article written by North West Leicestershire District Council

A new indoor market and events space will be created in a former Coalville pub, thanks to investment by North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC). The council has bought the former Litten Tree pub on Marlborough Square, with plans to transform it into a multi-purpose space for market stalls, food vendors, entertainment and events. Regular outdoor markets will be held just outside the new indoor space once the planned redesign of Marlborough Square is complete. The current market hall, which is located behind the Belvoir Shopping Centre, currently costs the council over £100,000 to maintain each year. The roof is leaking and some units cannot be used for health and safety reasons. £600,000 has been allocated by the council for the purchase and revamp of the building. Existing market traders are being supported to move into the new indoor market, onto the new outdoor market or into suitable retail space in the town. The council also hopes to offer the opportunity for new businesses and start-ups to trade at the revamped indoor market and to programme entertainment and events there as part of its plans to regenerate the town. Councillor Richard Blunt, Leader of North West Leicestershire District Council, said: “Our plans to help regenerate Coalville include a complete redevelopment of Marlborough Square – and the relocation of the market is an important part of that. The current market is in the wrong place and is held in a cold, leaky building. We want to support our market traders and new business ideas in a welcoming space that can host markets, pop up events and entertainment." “The second phase of this work is to hold an open air market on the newly redesigned Marlborough Square. Whilst there has been some delay with this part of the project, we’re working to get it back on track and really bring the life back to this part of town.” The detailed designs for the new indoor market and events space are currently being drawn up and work to replace the roof will begin in the coming weeks. The current market will stay open at the existing Market Hall until the new market is ready to trade.

And the owner of Coalville Furniture Superstore in Belvoir Street would like to thank shoppers in the Coalville area for their support since the shop opened in June 2014, saying the business had gained an excellent reputation and customer base, and was very well received by people in the town. Company Director Paul Bancroft said: “It is with a heavy heart that we have taken the decision not to reopen the store. The flood, caused by a burst water pipe in March last year, caused damage to stock and in the building. It was devastating to see. It has taken an unbelievable amount of time for everything to get sorted which is very frustrating for a business owner. But with all things taken into consideration we have now decided to permanently close.” There's good news for local people on the hunt for home furniture and beds though, as Mr Bancroft runs another company nearby which has been open for almost 25 years. “We are proud of our family roots at our Barwell business, The Suite Superstore, just 12 miles away. We welcome people from Coalville to visit us in Barwell - as a number of customers have already done - for the same excellent service, choice and prices which were well recognised at the Coalville store. And customer recommendation remains extremely positive.” The large two floor store in Coalville (formerly used as the Co-op department store) sold dining and bedroom furniture, beds and mattresses, as well as sofas and chairs. New Coalville Leisure Centre And Transformation Of Hood Park A Step Closer As Management Partner Chosen Article written by North West Leicestershire District Council

The leisure partner that will build a new leisure centre in Coalville, transform the leisure centre at Ashby de la Zouch and manage both centres for the next 25 years has been chosen. Everyone Active has won the contract to manage the centres in partnership with North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC). Based in Hinckley, the company currently operates numerous leisure facilities in Leicestershire, including in Melton, Oadby and Wigston and Blaby. With the contract starting in May 2019, work totalling almost £1.2 million to reconfigure and revamp Hood Park Leisure Centre – which will be renamed Ashby Leisure Centre and Lido – will begin in August and be completed in November 2019. Planning permission is required for the new £22 million Coalville Leisure Centre, which will be built on council-owned land off Stephenson Way (A511). The new centre will take around 18 months to build and is expected to open in 2021. The plans for the Coalville centre will see the land turned into a parkland leisure destination, including a trim trail with activity stations, pedestrian and cycle access from Hermitage Recreation Ground and Stephenson College, and a high ropes course within the woodland. The centre itself will include:

• Eight lane 25 metre main pool, a learner pool with moveable floor • 120 station Technogym gym, 25 spin cycles and three dance studios • Café with healthy eating options • Eight court sports hall and three squash courts • Changing Places facility accessible from the lobby • 250 car spaces • Clip ‘n’ Climb and soft play programmed • Sauna, steam and spa pool NWLDC has this week launched the Health and Wellbeing Strategy for the district, which will see a number of organisations working together to improve health outcomes in North West Leicestershire. Everyone Active will contribute to improved health and wellbeing through a range of initiatives, including:

• Increasing participation at both centres • Issuing almost 40,000 Everyone Active cards, providing access to the centres and a dedicated health tracking app

• Working in the community to provide activities and classes in community centres and other locations

• Targeted activities and online challenges for children and young people

• Improving opportunities for women and girls to get active • Targeted activities and programmes for older people and people who have been referred by their GP.

Hermitage Leisure Centre in Whitwick will stay open until the new centre opens. Options for the site once the centre closes will be drawn up by the council after the start of the contract in May 2019. Councillor Richard Blunt, Leader of NWLDC, said: “We’re very excited to announce the partnership between the council and Everyone Active, which will see a brand new leisure centre in Coalville, a revamped facility in Ashby and a real emphasis on health and wellbeing for our district. Everyone Active are highly respected in the leisure world; they have built and invested in top quality facilities across the country and we’re looking forward to seeing the positive changes they’ll bring to our district.” NWLDC has recently agreed to invest an additional £1 million in leisure in Ibstock, Measham and Castle Donington, focussing on the fitness facilities within the centres there, which are run in partnership with local schools. Councillor Alison Smith MBE, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Community Services at NWLDC, said: “Hermitage Leisure Centre is very popular with lots of loyal customers and excellent staff, but the building is very old and is no longer fit for purpose. The new leisure centre will

provide excellent access to top quality facilities for the whole district. We’re also very pleased that the Ashby centre will receive over £1 million of investment, reconfiguring and refurbishing the whole centre to bring it up to modern standards and making the most of its unique outdoor lido. Add to this our investment in Castle Donington, Ibstock and Measham, and you can see the future of leisure in North West Leicestershire is very bright indeed.” Everyone Active will take on the management of both Hermitage and Hood Park Leisure Centres, including the buildings and staff, and will run both centres while the new one is being built. Dan Hicks, Everyone Active’s Area Contract Manager, said: “This is a very exciting time for leisure in Coalville and Ashby de la Zouch, with significant investments being made to provide state-of-the-art facilities for the local areas. Leicestershire is at the heart of Everyone Active – it’s where the company was first born over 30 years ago and we have vast experience of managing leisure centres within the area. We’re so pleased to partner with North West Leicestershire District Council and are very excited to get the refurbishments and building of the new centre underway.”

History Of Leicester And Leicestershire Animal Aid Association (LAA) – Founded In 1956 “A true labour of love” - by local lady Dorothea Farndon

The origins of Leicester Animal Aid (‘LAA’) date back more than sixty years to 1956. The organisation owes its roots to one truly remarkable woman, Dorothea Farndon. Dorothea was determined to save the lives of stray dogs and every week went to buy the dogs from local police stations – she kept some dogs in her own home and also paid for temporary boarding for others until they were found new homes. She built chalets to house stray cats in her garden, and by 1962 she was looking after up to 47 cats at any one time. Gradually the animals took over all the rooms in her house until she was living in what had been a small parlour next to the kitchen. In the early 1960’s she realised her dream and acquired some land at Thurmaston Lane where she was able to put up kennels and establish her own rescue centre. In 1968 there were 60 dogs in residence and all the support was provided by local volunteers apart from two-part time kennel maids. In 1970 the land in Thurmaston Lane was needed for redevelopment and the rescue centre was given just one week’s notice to quit. As the lives of more than 100 dogs were at risk, it was agreed that she could keep a small strip of land until alternative accommodation was found. In 1971, after much searching, the move to the present premises on Forest Road in Huncote took place – it was a pig farm which the farmer was selling due to retirement. Initially Dorothea still kept all of the cats at her home but when she died, aged 89, in 1991 the cats were taken in at the Huncote centre (located between Desford and Narborough). Today the charity cares for, and re-homes, more than 500 dogs and cats every year – vulnerable animals who are lost, unwanted, have been abandoned, or because their owners can no longer look after them. On arrival, all animals receive a full veterinary health check, behavioural assessment, vaccinations, flea and worm treatment, a warm bed, toys and the love, care and kindness they deserve. “Pet matching” - We match dogs and cats based on their individual needs to new homes – acting a bit like a dating agency. From Chihuahuas to St. Bernard’s, from kittens to elderly cats, we have a huge range of sizes, ages, colours and personalities looking for kind and loving forever homes. A huge part of the success of Leicester Animal Aid is down to the brilliant “unsung heroes” – the dozens of volunteers and hundreds of supporters who give so much in many different ways. The charity does not receive any Government funding and relies on the kindness and generosity of the local community. We thank the volunteers who give us practical help: for example those who help with gardening, dog walking, cat grooming and those who help us raise money to enable us to continue the vital work we do. Some of our volunteers work in our cafe or charity shop. We have lots of events going on such as Dog Care and Animal First Aid Courses, coffee mornings and mini-markets – you can find lots of information on our website www.leicesteranimalaid.org.uk We would really appreciate the opportunity to have stalls at local events or within local stores and supermarkets. New Year New You? Article written by Jacqueline Newing

Thinking of making some changes to your lifestyle this New Year? Like most people, you are probably considering making a New Year resolution and many of us will focus on our eating habits. But if you love food and love to eat, maybe it’s hard to imagine how this can fit into a healthier lifestyle. Here’s a top tip - instead of making grand statements swearing never to eat another biscuit or crisp again (which is, after all, rather unrealistic), decide to make just a few simple changes to the way you prepare your food. Lots of small changes that you stick to will add up to big, long-term differences. So, choose lean cuts of meat or remove all skin/visible fat; maybe consider a meat-free day once a week; grill or bake instead of frying; make sure you get your recommended ‘5-a-day’ of fresh fruit and vegetables (and good news here – time-saving frozen vegetables have just as many

vitamins as fresh!) To help you get started with a healthy-eating groove, this delicious recipe for a warming winter soup is a great way to get your veggies! Carrot and Ginger Soup 1 onion, chopped 2 celery sticks, chopped, 1 garlic clove, crushed 1.5cm piece root ginger, peeled and grated 1 litre vegetable stock 600g carrots, peeled and roughly chopped Salt and pepper Put the onion, celery, garlic and ginger into a saucepan, add a splash of water and cook, stirring, for 2=3 minutes. Add the stock and carrots and bring to the boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes or until the carrots are tender. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Use a stick blender or transfer to a food processor to blend until smooth. Jacqueline is a Slimming World consultant and dedicated ‘foodie’.

Feeling S.A.D This Winter?

Article written by Hollie Jordan, Happy Head Hypnotherapy

The Winter blues, known more formally as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) affects 1 in 3 of us in the UK. This article will look at what SAD is, why we get it and what we can do to alleviate symptoms. SAD is commonly experienced during the winter months and symptoms often alleviate as the days get lighter as we approach Spring/Summer. The symptoms of SAD may include low mood, worry and irritability. Some people may find that they are sleeping longer than normal and are struggling to get up in the morning. Often, feeling lethargic or sleepy throughout the day as a result. Some find that they lose interest in everyday activities and experience feelings of guilt, hopelessness and worthlessness. It may be a good idea to visit your GP if your symptoms are severe and are affecting day to day activities. It is not known for sure what causes SAD but it is thought that it has something to do with shorter daylight hours we have during the winter months. Studies show that a lack of sunlight stops a part of our brain working properly and this may affect the production of Serotonin. Serotonin is sometimes referred to as the ‘Happy chemical’ and when we produce Serotonin we are happy, nice and can generally cope better with what life has in store for us. Lower Serotonin levels are linked to depression. Lower light levels may also affect your Circadian rhythm (your natural body clock) which also leads to symptoms of SAD. There are many things we can do to alleviate the symptoms of SAD, these include:

• • • • • •

Light Therapy - Get yourself a light box which is a special lamp used to imitate natural light and uses a different bulb to the ones we use around the house. Alternatively, make the most of the sunlight we do get by getting outdoors during the day as much as you can. Light Exercise – Regular exercise will reduce stress, release endorphins and boost serotonin. Even better if you can exercise outdoors during the day! Engage in positivity – People who have a negative outlook may experience SAD more than those that don’t. Thinking positively, practising mindfulness or meditating will help you to be more positive. Talk – talk to family/friends about how you are feeling. Having a chat and a cuppa might be just the antidote. Positive interactions are thought to get our Serotonin flowing! Do things you enjoy – Whether it’s binge-watching your favourite TV show or reading a book; taking a few moments to indulge in something you truly enjoy will give you a burst of positive energy. Hypnotherapy – Hypnotherapy is a mixture of talking therapy and hypnosis which helps you to create new, positive behaviour changes to make lasting change. It may give you just the boost you need.

Whatever you choose to help get you through the long, cold, dark nights of winter always remember…..summer is coming!

County Cllr Michael Wyatt M: 07773 341531 E: mikewyatt1@hotmail.co.uk Marlborough Square Development The council has bought the former Litten Tree pub on Marlborough Square, with plans to transform it into a multi-purpose space for market stalls, food vendors, entertainment and events. Regular outdoor markets will be held just outside the new indoor space once the planned redesign of Marlborough Square is complete according to the Council. Liberal Democrat Cllr Michael Wyatt has welcomed this project and urges the council to actually deliver it and not just make another empty promise that fails to materialise. Coalville residents have heard over the past 12 years of Tory rule things will get better, and investment in our Town is on its way but in reality nothing ever happened. I really do hope this development starts but yet again it’s not enough. We need a proper plan to regenerate our town not just a few changes that fail to bring in major business players into our town. Hopefully in May at the district council elections we will see a change and we have councillors elected who actually want to see Coalville thrive again. The detailed designs for the new indoor market and events space are currently being drawn up and work to replace the roof will begin in the coming weeks. The current market will stay open at the existing Market Hall until the new market is ready to trade.

CALL FOR A FREE QUOTATION

Cllr Michael Wyatt is calling in the Tory controlled council to either put up or move aside if they continue with their current policy of neglecting Coalville in favour of other places. Local Liberal Democrat Cllr Michael Wyatt said, “It’s time for Coalville to have proper leadership and a vision that will deliver what the people want and deserve.” “Millions have been spent in Hinckley Town. We need the same commitment from our Councillors instead of the current out of touch bunch who blame everyone else but themselves for failing to listen to local businesses and local residents." "We need a cinema, we need more places to eat, we need more well known brands, we need a train station. Coalville has so much potential. All it’s lacking is proper leadership. In May residents will have the chance to change that by voting for my team who want to put Coalville first“ says Cllr Michael Wyatt.

Delays And Indecision

What do politicians actually do? That question may have crossed your mind over the last few months. Delays and indecision at Westminster aren’t helping us to deal with the day-to-day issues that make a

difference here in Coalville. While the media are obsessed with Brexit there is little interest in the real work of managing our community.

In engineering terms, a ‘governor’ is a device used to measure and

regulate the speed of a machine. When it is working well, the engine of local government makes our lives easier. When it isn’t, we can feel

chewed up, annoyed and upset. As a local councillor, my job is to help people to get through the system. Some people don’t know where to

start. Some people get stuck. Local Councillors are there to ‘scrutinise’. The word comes from an old Latin term ‘scrutari’ which once meant ‘to sort through rags’. Like an engineer, complete with oily rag, the

Councillor is there to open the lid of the Council machinery, show where things are going a bit wrong or need a bit of lubrication and make the system work properly for the people. Big Responsibilities

It is worth pointing out that, in my division of Coalville North, the work of political engineering is divvied up between two or three different

Councils. I sit on the County Council which has big responsibilities and

the biggest budget. It looks after the care needs of people with learning difficulties, frail and older people and vulnerable children. It takes

care of roads, pavements and footpaths. It makes sure your rubbish is

disposed of safely. It oversees industries, such as quarries, that impact on the environment.

I also represent the ward of Hugglescote St Mary’s on the District Council which has a long list of responsibilities including waste

collection, alcohol and taxi licensing, environmental health and social housing. Councillors on the District Planning Committee have the

difficult job of balancing the ambitions of developers and the national

economy with the needs of people living in the area. It isn’t possible to please everyone, especially when your hands are tied by Westminster rules, but it is vitally important that there are local people prepared to speak out.

Coalville Town only has two layers of government. Both Hugglescote and

Ravenstone have Parish Councils as well. This third layer of government lies closest to your community. All the Councillors are volunteers. Some look after parks and open spaces. Some take over cutting Highway protect communities from inappropriate development.

MP Andrew Bridgen

M: 01530 417736 E: andrew.bridgen.mp@parliament.uk The amendments being put through Parliament which aim to delay or stop Brexit and rule out no deal are yet another flagrant display of how the majority of MP’s in Parliament are completely divorced from the people they represent and were never able to reconcile themselves with the result of the EU referendum, which was the biggest democratic vote in our country’s history. In the leaflet produced by the Government and delivered to every household ahead of the EU Referendum, it quite clearly stated ‘This is your decision. The Government will implement what you decide.’ It was made clear by both the Leave and Remain side that we would be leaving the single market, the customs union and the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice. This was reaffirmed in the manifesto of both the Conservative and Labour Party in 2017 after which they both whipped MP’s to vote to invoke Article 50 which had a default position of leaving after two years of negotiations either with or without a deal. The remainer dominated media continue to allow those who voted remain to argue that people didn’t know what they were voting for or have changed their minds without any concrete evidence other the polls which got the referendum result wrong in the first place. The experience of my inbox is that for every leaver that changes their mind to remain, more than one remainer changes their mind to leave after witnessing the appalling way the EU had treated the UK and our representatives during these negotiations. At the referendum, it is estimated that 480 MP’s voted remain and 159 for leave. This is before the 2017 election but very little has changed with these numbers and the make up of the House of Commons. We have a speaker who is happy to display “b*****s to Brexit” and “ Don’t blame me I voted Remain” stickers on his car. Unfortunately we have a Prime Minister ,Chancellor and overwhelming majority of the cabinet who campaigned to Remain in the EU who pump out scare stories as they appear petrified at the idea of having to conceive policies unilaterally without having a template from our unelected masters in the European Union. Turning to more domestic matters, I have in recent months raised concerns about the level of Police cover in NW Leics. I am not satisfied with the amount of cover and officers we have and have made this point to the Police and Crime Commissioner. As a District, we are seeing a significant amount of economic growth, principally because of our transport links with the A42, M1 and A50. One downside of this is we are vulnerable to criminals such as car thieves from Birmingham who can strike in the early hours of the morning and can be back home in little more than half an hour. The keyless method of car theft has contributed to a significant increase in cars being stolen nationally as criminals have switched to this as it’s less risky than burglary. This is organised crime and it is essential that our local Police service is equipped to deal with the challenge. There will be a 7.2% increase in the Police budget for Leicestershire Police in the next financial year and I am in dialogue with the Police and Crime Commissioner's office to ensure we get our fair share of resources considering the amounts we pay into the Leicestershire Police budget. The business case for HS2 continues to fall apart with the Treasury looking at pulling White Elephant projects (of which HS2 is by far the biggest), it’s former Chairman admitting he has no idea how much it will end up costing, HS2 themselves talking about reducing speed and carriages (which they have always insisted to me they cannot do), and the supporters of the Eastern leg feeling they need to reaffirm support from Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn. This looks like a desperate move as they can see the tide turning against them and the sooner this project in cancelled, the sooner the blight can be lifted from thousands of householders and businesses in NW Leics. We have already wasted £5bn on this project , spending any more would be “good money after bad”.
