Now the extra funding is available the new Skate facility will be much improved from the original proposals. ” Greenhill Councillor Ron Adams stated; “Many young people have been asking for this type of play area, and it’s excellent news that it will now be built. FREE health checks – your health matters!
NO BY-PASS FOR BARDON Residents feel “betrayed”
There will be FREE health checks at a Well Families Clinic in Measham on Tuesday 23rd April 2013.
A new 25 year strategic plan was adopted at a meeting of NWLeics district Council on Tuesday 26th March.
Organised by the Council, the clinics can help you make positive changes to your lifestyle and include free cholesterol, blood pressure and body mass index screenings.
At the meeting Councillor Dave De Lacy proposed that the 25 year plan be amended to include a commitment to build the Bardon Road By-pass. The Controlling Conservative group on the Council narrowly defeated this proposal with the Lib–Dem Councillor for Greenhill abstaining.
The Measham clinic will be held on Tuesday 23rd April at St Laurence’s Church Hall, High Street, Measham between 2pm and 6.30pm. No appointment is required just come along and have a look round the different stations during the afternoon. As well as the free health screenings, these successful clinics offer a range of health and well-being advice, including the new Posture Analysis screening, advice on how to stop smoking, diet and nutrition, back to basics cookery and much more. There are fun exercise challenges with prizes for all ages and fruit juices to try during the afternoon as well as a free pedometer to count your daily steps. We hope that by offering this service, people will come along and get their free checks and find out how they can improve their health and well-being. For further information contact Julie Summerton 01530 454541 or email julie.summerton@nwleicestershire.gov.uk
Councillor De Lacy in tabling the amendment said at the meeting “There is absolutely no commitment whatsoever to build the by-pass in this 25 year Plan merely a commitment to reserve land until 2031 which could accommodate a by-pass if things change. The 25 year plan also states very clearly that – “Currently there is no strategic highway case for the By-Pass.” The County Council Highways Department who are responsible for the County Roads, responding in an email to Dave De Lacy have set out the position regarding the By-Pass. “It is not intended that the link road should be a relief road or bypass to Bardon Road, i.e. it will not be classified as the A511 nor be signed as a route to destinations such as the M1, A42, Leicester or Ashby.” A senior officer of North West Leics District Council has also confirmed in a recent e-mail to Dave De Lacy that “there is no requirement or a need for a full relief road”. Dave De Lacy commented after the meeting “The last Council Plan in 2002 produced by the then Labour Council contained a firm commitment to the by-pass to be funded by contributions from developers. This new plan definitely does not. The current plans will allow the building of thousands of houses in South West Coalville without a By-Pass for Bardon. It’s an absolute disgrace and absolutely awful for the residents of Bardon. Residents have told me they feel betrayed.” Dave De Lacy also added “ I find it absolutely astonishing that the Lib-Dem County Councillor for Greenhill and Bardon after all he has said in his leaflets and in the press about the By-Pass did not vote for my amendment to restore the building of the Bardon By-Pass into the Council`s 25year plan. I have challenged him to a public debate about this and other issues but unfortunately he has declined.”

Children’s hospice calls on walkers People are being urged to pull on their walking boots and raise vital funds for Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People. Rainbows is staging its annual sponsored Walk of Life on Sunday 19 May, as part of Children’s Hospice Week*, and is calling on the people of Leicestershire to sign up. Starting at Leicestershire County Cricket Club, on Grace Road, walkers can take on a 15 mile trek or a gentler five mile amble around the city and surrounding countryside. More than 700 people took part in the event last year raising £45,000 for the Loughborough-based hospice. Many of the walkers dressed as their favourite super hero or brought their dogs along which made a fantastic sight around the streets of Leicester. This year, organisers hope to attract 800 walkers and smash last year’s figure. Katie Baxter, community and events manager at Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People, said: “The Walk of Life is one of our most fun events. With the choice of two routes, there really is something for everybody and we hope that as many people as possible sign up to help us raise funds.

Local Councillor Complains about shoddy workmanship Liberal Democrat County councillor Michael Wyatt has complained to the District Council about the growing number of complaints concerning shoddy workmanship by the contractors carrying out improvements to the Council housing stock in the local area of Greenhill. Cllr Wyatt has already helped a number of residents who have thanked him for taking up their concerns. Julie Roberts a local tenant on the Greenhill Estate said, "Its terrible what some tenants are having to put up with. Cllr Michael Wyatt has been a great help, and without his help I dread to think where we would turn for advice if he was not on the Council. No one seems to want to listen accept Michael who we all know and trust to stand up for our rights." Cllr Wyatt said, "I have received a number of complaints which clearly show their is growing dissatisfaction with the Council's housing improvement contractors. In some cases they have shown a lack of respect to tenants properties, and an unacceptable standard of work, which a number needed to be done again due to poor standards. I really do think the Council need to inform the contractors to improve their standards or be sacked."

MORE TRAFFIC FOR BARDON ROAD Barwood have applied for planning permission to build up to 135 houses including the demolition of 3 houses on Bardon Road and the construction of a new access road on to Bardon Road. Councillor Dave De Lacy said "The lives of residents on Bardon Road are already blighted by traffic, noise, fumes and vibration. This development will inevitably increase traffic on Bardon Road and make things worse. At a recent public meeting organised by Bardon Residents Action Group there was an unanimous decision to oppose this development. It is important that residents now submit their views". Dave added "the best way to express your views is to write or email an individual letter to the Council. The plans are available at nwleics.gov.uk/planning. Views can be submitted on the website or write to James Mattley, Planning Dpt, NWLDC, Whitwick Rd, Coalville, Leics, LE67 3FJ.

Spring is on the way and Parish Councillors like Dr Terri Eynon are hearing a lot of complaints about the state of the roads. Winter rain seeps into cracks in the road. When it freezes ice expands. It acts like a wedge, pushing the tarmac apart, allowing more water in to freeze, expand and break open the surface. This is a bad time of year to be a Highways Engineer. With so many complaints coming in, it can be hard to prioritise the work and keep within budget. But you can help.
When you report a pothole, make sure you tell the Customer Services department what they need to know. Contact County Hall on customerservices@leics.gov.uk or 0116 305 0001. Give the exact location. The number of the nearest house is best. If there are no houses nearby, tell them which road signs it is near to. Is it on the road or the footway? In the middle or at the edge? What shape and size is it? Potholes less than 40mm deep on the road or less than 20mm deep on the footway are not going to be priority. You might like to take a picture on your camera phone and upload it with your email. You should get given a reference number. Make a note of it and also the date when you reported the pothole. Dangerous defects should be fixed within 72 hours. Less serious potholes will be done as a batch, so may be left for up to 90 days. If you want to find about more about how to report road defects and other highways issues go to Hugglescote and Donington le Heath Parish Council website and click on the tab marked ‘all you need to know’. http://hugglescote.leicestershireparishcouncils.org/
Licence Granted At Local Post Office A licensing panel met on Monday 18th March at NWLeics Council Offices to decide whether to permit a license to sell alcohol at Meadow Lane Post Office, Coalville. Despite dozens of objections from local residents it was decided to permit the license. Many residents claimed that a number of incidents of anti-social behaviour relating to the consumption of alcohol regularly occur in the vicinity of the Post Office. However, the Police submitted no objection to the license application. There were two petitions submitted to the panel – 112 against the application and 106 in support. Labour Councillor Nick Clarke, who spoke at the hearing on behalf of residents objecting to the license said; “The result of the hearing is disappointing, I know there are many issues of anti-social behaviour in the area and the granting of this license can only inflame the situation. However, we should respect the decision of the panel. There are very strict guidelines for refusing a license and apparently there simply wasn’t enough evidence to refuse the application in this case.” If a license is refused the applicant has the right of appeal. If the Council’s decision is overturned at appeal, all costs have to be met by the Council and therefore the tax payer. Councillor Clarke added; “It is also disappointing that the local Lib Dem Councillor is trying to make political gain from this by blaming Labour and Tory Councillors for the decision. He is more than aware (as a member of the Licensing Committee) that it is a non-political committee and all members are obliged to have regard to guidance set out in the Licencing Act 2003.”

HS2 update (High Speed 2)
Today I and a delegation from the North West Leicestershire Labour Group met with Councillor Paul Bayliss, Leader of Derby City Council, to discuss the potential impact of HS2 on our respective areas. The North West Leicestershire Labour Group, alongside the district's Conservative leadership, have been clear that we are strongly against proposals to bisect the district through the construction of a high speed railway line, proposals which will jeopardise thousands of jobs, cause planning blight and years of construction disruption with no discernible benefits. Any funds raised from selling the electrical appliances and re-used furniture is returned to the project to fund training for the long term unemployed. Lorrraine Harrison, Re-Use Service Manager explained “We are in desperate need of electrical appliances at the moment, people’s unwanted items are needed to help those who aren’t able to afford to buy new items and it saves people having to arrange having the items collected and taken to the tip” Lorraine continued “Unlike national charities, we are a Coalville based charity which means funds raised from selling these items goes straight back into the community so anyone donating anything to us are genuinely helping local people”. 10 million items of furniture are thrown away in the UK every year and four million children in the UK live in households that cannot afford to replace worn out or broken furniture. Last year the REACT project reused 4336 items of furniture saving more than 100 tons from land fill. For those wishing to come along and browse the current stock of brand new and reused furniture the REACT furniture warehouse is open Mondays to Fridays from 9.00am to 2.30pm. The warehouse is well stocked with brand new mattresses and beds including wooden slatted beds and faux leather bed frames, as well as bedroom furniture and sofas and corner settee all competitively priced. New furniture can be delivered for a nominal charge and for anyone in North West Leicestershire on means tested benefits, delivery is completely free. So, if you are having a clear out and have any electrical appliances, furniture, bedding or anything you think may be of use to us please call the REACT Furniture Project directly on 01530 512454 or email react@mrc.uk.net To find out more about the REACT project and MRC Community Action visit www.mrc.uk.net
Councillors Leon Spence and Paul Bayliss benefits which HS2 could bring to Derby, a city with a rich engineering heritage. I very much hope that the potential for rerouting HS2 in a direction with broad support and a viable business case is an option which the Government will seriously consider. I am sure both of our groups look forward to working together to bring a desired aim to reality.

Council unanimously back Wyatt's amendment on Bardon By-Pass. On Tuesday 26th March the Council decided to agree the Council's Core Strategy. Cllr Michael Wyatt who's been campaigning to have the Bardon By-pass re-inserted back in to the Core Strategy after the Tories decided to delete it last year, put forward an amendment at the meeting, which received all Party support.
MRC Transport Keeps Coalville Moving! A new transport service recently launched by MRC Community Transport based at The Marlene Reid Centre in Coalville is proving to be a real success. The new service is now available to anyone who needs help getting to work in the Coalville area. The service is aimed at people who have no transport or easy access to a bus route and need a simple and accessible way of getting to work and is available to anyone working shift patterns starting early in the morning or late in the evening when public transport is not readily available. Nikki Warrilow, Community Transport Service Manager said “This new service is a very cost effective way of helping local people get to their place of work, Nikki added “Since launching the service in the middle of February we are already averaging about 45 journeys every week Chris Green from Coalville, who has been employed by MRC Community Action as the mini bus driver for this service said “We all know that public transport is not always available when you need it and people cannot always rely on others for lifts to work, with our minibuses locals can be assured that we will be on time and we will not let them down. Chris added “People using this service are so appreciative and regular users tell me that it would be a real struggle to get to work without it
Cllr Michael Wyatt said, "I am delighted that my amendment received all Party support. This was not an easy task. To get this far is a major step forward. This is a giant leap along the path to have the by-pass come to fruition. The next major step will be to achieve the funding, which is always very difficult, but with the development planned for the area I am hopeful that the much needed Relief Road will be started. Now we have got this far we must continue to pressure the local Council's and Government to help make funds available sooner rather than later for this vital local infrastructure."
MRC Community Transport has provided local transport in and around Coalville and North West Leicestershire for many years by taking people on day trips, shopping to local supermarkets as well as to important health related appointments. The new initiative, People to Places is a scheme supported by Leicestershire County Council and is aimed at people who do not live near a bus route or who have special requirements which prevent them from using public transport. If you are interested in finding out more about how the service works call Nikki on 01530 512457 or email transport@mrc.uk.net. More information is available at www.mrc.uk.net.

Coalville Town Hockey Triple Champions In mid March Coalville Town Hockey club achieved a unique accomplishment when the 2nd XI became Champions of their Division in the Midlands Hockey League. One week earlier the 1st XI raised their sticks aloft as they won the Championship in their division following the 3rd XI, who had reached this level a week earlier. This was a rare occurrence indeed for the first three teams in any club, all to win their respective divisions making it a treble celebration for Coalville Town.
Coalville Town Hockey Club 2nd XI
Chris Ashton, club Chairman, said ‘this was a very proud moment for not just having one team win but for three to win in one season was unbelievable.’ It rewards a lot of hard work that has gone into the season both on and off the field. Increased training Coalville Town Hockey Club 1st XI sessions, consistent commitment from players and a hard working committee have seen the club take great strides forward this year. An ever growing junior section will help to ensure the future development combined with the dedication of the coaches, captains and junior co-coordinator. The three captains, Phil Sign (1st XI), Scott Meadows (2nd XI) and Markas Marriott (3rd XI) were all full of praise for their respective teams and the effort and dedication they have shown. Indeed the success didn’t stop there as the 4th XI has grown in stature as the season has gone on. More than half of this team had not played any competitive hockey before October and the youngsters have come good beating some experienced sides this year. The club is very keen to ensure that this years’ success is taken forward into the coming seasons. The junior ranks have increased tenfold this year and this is a trend we want to continue – so any youngsters wanting to take up the game or get involved in hockey contact Phil Sign at phil.sign@sky.com We currently run four men’s adult teams but as part of the club growth we want to add an extra adult men’s team along with a ladies and mixed sections, plus expanding the junior section to offer teams at several different age levels. If anyone is interested in playing you will be most welcome. Contact Phil Sign on 07912 038149 or email phil.sign@sky.com. Our hockey sessions take place on the artificial pitch at King Edward VII College on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and through the summer there will be taster days or you can come along and have a go at Rush Hockey (a fun 5-a-side version of the game); Back into Hockey (for those who have played before and had a break); Quicksticks and In2hockey. There are plenty of ways to get involved.

FILMREVIEW Iron Man 3 - Out 25th April
Iron Man 3 is the latest installment in the hit series with explosive effects that take it to the next level. Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) – in his role as Iron Man – is trying to track down and wreak his revenge on those who have tried to destroy him and has ended up against his deadliest enemy yet, the devious Mandarin (Ben Kingsley). But just as important as the battle with the enemy is the battle within and his whole relationship with the Iron Man in the mirror. Iron Man 3 is that rare thing: a highly intelligent movie with plenty of big-bang action.
The Croods - U The Croods is a spectacular 3D animated adventure that is as inspirational as it is enjoyable. Grug (Nicolas Cage) is the father of a stone-age family, a family he keeps safe by warning them against ever going outside their cave. His daughter, Epp (Emma Stone), however, has been cursed with curiosity and is desperate to explore the world “out there”. When their cave is destroyed, she leads the whole family on an adventure that changes their world forever. The Croods is a visually stunning animation with a great message about living your life to the full in there.

Badger Baiting Discovered in the Charnwood Forest The Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust have recently discovered evidence of badger baiting in the Charnwood Forest near Coalville. A badger sett was discovered which had been dug out and then refilled. The disturbed soil contained badger fur which indicated that one or more badgers may have been killed. Badger baiting has been illegal for over 170 years due the horrendous suffering caused to badgers and the dogs used to bait them. Badgers are normally caught in their setts by blocking the exits and then sending a dog in to corner the badger. The baiters dig down to find the badger. This can often mean digging a hole over 6ft deep. Once found the badger is maimed in order to prevent it killing the dogs too quickly. This usually takes the form of breaking the badger's jaw or legs with a shovel. The badger is then thrown back into the hole or taken to a prepared location and one or more dogs are set on it in a fight to the death. A spokesman for the Trust said "This is a shocking discovery. This sort of sick blood sport should not have a place in modern life. Unfortunately the people that do this think that digging a wild animal out of the ground, maiming it and watching it fighting dogs is entertainment. To every sane person this would be deemed to be abhorrent. The types of individuals that do this are serious violent criminals. We would urge people to be vigilant when out in the countryside and to report any suspicious activity to the police." The RSPCA and Police have been contacted and photographic evidence was taken at the scene. The sett in question and those in the surrounding area have been put under regular surveillance and remote cameras will be deployed in the near future. The Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust are asking people to be vigilant and report suspicious activity including: • People carrying spades (sometimes fold away spade in bags or rucksacks) when out walking. • People taking small terrier type dogs near badger setts. Look out for radio collars on the dogs as they use this to locate the dog in the sett. • Any signs of recent digging activity on a badger sett.

More Time To Play At Little Dragon’s Den! Little Dragon’s Den at The Marlene Reid Centre in Coalville is proving so popular that after Easter the opening hours are going to be extended. The soft play sessions on Mondays and Fridays will now stay open until 3pm as from 5th April. Lesley Massey, Children & Families Service Manager at MRC Community Action said “Our sessions are packed full every week, local parents, grandparents and childminders come along and the children have a great time on our large bouncy castle and soft play equipment”. Lesley added “We are very conscious that everyone is having to tighten their belts, at Little Dragon’s Den we keep the entry cost and the cost of our refreshments as low as we possibly can to make sure that everyone can afford to come along regularly. Little Dragon’s Den is in the main hall at The Marlene Reid Centre which has disabled access and a lift. Refreshments are served throughout each session from cups of tea and cakes to hot snacks and children’s meal deals. Regular visitors to Little Dragon’s Den can become members and then benefit from regular promotions including a free entry pass after six visits. Lesley said “It’s a great place to come along and meet friends and other Mums. It’s all very informal and our main aim is to make sure that the children have fun” she added “We have lots of toys and books and we quite often run craft sessions too so there is always plenty for everyone to do”. Entry to Little Dragon’s starts at £1.00 for 12 months and under and for 1-5 year olds it’s just £1.50. More information is available at www.mrc.uk.net.
OLCS National U16 ISA Netball Champions On Saturday 9th March Our Lady’s Convent School, Loughborough (OLCS) travelled to Rugby School to compete in the prestigious U16 National ISA Netball Tournament. The tournament ran on a ‘round robin’ basis rather than the traditional tournament style, which meant each team played against every competing team. Overcoming the challenges of facing unknown teams such as Bedstone College and old rivals Alderley Edge the plucky OLCS team played with style and panache, utilising set moves and well honed techniques. By the fourth match they were unbeaten but eventually conceded a win to Princethorpe College. After a quick team chat the girls changed tactics and focused on scoring as many goals as possible in case the competition was decided on goal difference. In their last two matches against Hawley Place and St Martha's they won convincingly; 14-1 and 13-1 respectively. The competition ended with Our Lady’s Convent School and Alderley Edge Girls School both on 26 points, therefore goal difference was the deciding factor; Alderley Edge had a respectable goal difference of 39 whilst OLCS had achieved an outstanding 79. The team of Caroline Garfield (Captain), Laura, Harriet & Amy Simes, Christina O Dowd, Alice Matthews, Laura Hayes and Olivia Platts were outstanding in their strategy, tactics and sportsmanlike conduct against some challenging opposition.

Set up by Leicestershire County Council, it aims to encourage people to leave their cars at home and explore alternative ways of getting from A to B. Lesley Pendleton, Leicestershire County Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: “The Choose How You Move Facebook page aims to encourage people to get fit, save money, have fun and help the environment by considering alternative transport.
We're delighted to announce the launch of Community Matters, a charitable giving scheme that'll run throughout our shops. Every 3 months each shop will select 3 community groups to help. Customers will then be directly involved in deciding how much each nominated group receives, by using a token to vote for the organisation they'd like to support. Each shop will have £3000 to donate which will be split between the charities according to the proportion of the vote they've received from customers. This means that if a charity receives 31% of the votes, it'll receive a £910 donation. Charities will receive support in whichever way will benefit them the most, either in the form of John Lewis products, volunteering time from Partners, or as financial support. The Community Matters boxes will be located in catering areas of each shop. Customers will be given one token per transaction, and will be able to follow how much of the vote each organisation receives over the 3 months. Organisations eligible for Community Matters will include charities, schools and relevant community groups. Partners will look at the requests that are submitted and choose 3 organisations to support for the following 3 months. Organisations that would like to be considered for Community Matters should visit their local John Lewis to pick up a nomination form.
“We hope people will visit and ‘like’ the page so they can find out more about walking, cycling and bus services in the county and share their views and tips on travelling sustainably.” The new page is available at: www.facebook.com/ChooseHowYouMove
County children choose Book Prize winner - and she's from Leicester A Leicester-born author has appropriately been chosen as the winner of the Leicestershire Children’s Book Prize for 2012. The author who came out on tops is Anne Fine, most renowned for Madame Doubtfire, which was made into a hit movie, Mrs Doubtfire, starring Robin Williams. Anne’s book, Bill’s New Frock, was voted the winner by children between the ages of seven and nine throughout the county. It tells the story of a young boy, Bill Simpson, who wakes up one morning to find he is a girl. Anne Fine said: “I’m absolutely delighted to have won the award. I was born in Leicester, so it’s a place very dear to my heart. It’s a really special thrill for me to know that so many children who live in the city and the county are now busily reading mine.” Second place went to Little Manfred by Michael Morpurgo and third place went to The Boy with Lightning Feet by Sally Gardner. There was a shortlist of six titles based on the six Olympic values of determination, friendship, respect, courage, excellence and inspiration. Dave Houseman, lead member for adults and communities at Leicestershire County Council, said: “The books included titles by new authors as well as books by established authors and it was really encouraging that nearly 2,000 children voted online in their local library or through their school. The aim of the prize was to widen reading choices for youngsters and to encourage children to share their reading with others.” Previous winners of the prize are Andy Stanton and Alan McDonald. All the books are available to borrow free of charge from local Leicestershire libraries at www.leics.gov.uk/libraries For further information about the prize go to: www.leics.gov.uk/childrensbookprize
