BEING PAIN-FREE IS PRICELESS

PAIN IS NO LONGER A HEADACHE FOR ROBERT CONSTANT severe headaches had been a pain, 24 hours a day, for Robert Barnett of Thringstone.

Then a surgeon at Leicester Royal suggested he try acupuncture. “I went straight out and booked a session with Doctor Ye – afterwards I felt amazing, the headache went and I was back to my old self!”

The father-of-two has been relieved of this agony by a course of acupuncture by skilled experts at Herbal Healing in Coalville. The clinic is well known for its success where others have failed. Robert was already aware of its reputation, but a fear of needles had delayed his visit. This fear disappeared immediately as soon as he walked into the Belvoir Road clinic. He says: “I was put entirely at ease. Not only that, after my first acupuncture session the pain disappeared too.” Now, after ten sessions, Robert is convinced that acupuncture is the only way forward for him. He said: “My headaches started with a cold followed by a bad flu-like virus in January 2018. This left me with constant headache across the bridge of my nose.

Doctor Ye with Robert Barnett

I had blurry eyes and felt sick.” A double course of antibiotics did nothing to improve his debilitating head pain. A factory manager for eight years, the everlasting headache was also a huge nuisance. His GP and local NHS hospitals struggled to find a cause. He had more than 20 blood tests, a CT scan, an MRI scan and even chest x-rays, all of which showed normal. “The NHS tried, but my headache remained and was a mystery,” he said.

“I felt great for two days. I realise now that it takes more than one session to totally banish the pain and get it under control. After ten sessions I am well on the way to being totally pain-free all the time. I can’t recommend the clinic highly enough.” As for his dislike of needles, that has gone too. Robert says: “While they are in place I feel so relaxed I usually go to sleep with them in!” “I advise anyone being treated for pain to pick up the phone and call the acupuncture clinic on 01530 810888.” Coalville Acupuncture, Belvoir House, Belvoir Road, Coalville, LE67 3PN

Multi-Use Games Area Available To Hire In Thringstone Article written by Gemma Patel

Thringstone Primary School was pleased to receive funding to create a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) in its extensive grounds last year and it is now available to hire to sports groups in the community. Whilst the MUGA has huge benefits for pupils at the school, it was also created to give the local community a space to rent for sports teams and groups. The MUGA can be hired out for private use by local organised sports groups during evenings and weekends and the addition of flood lighting means that it can be used all year round. The MUGA is an all-weather outdoor pitch, with an artificial turf surface, suitable for various sports and games, such as football, basketball, netball and tennis. The area is used during the day by pupils at the school in PE lessons and in lunchtime and after school clubs and it is a fantastic resource to allow the children to access games and sports every day, whatever the weather. For more information about hiring this brand new sports facility, please contact Rachel Gascoigne via the school office by either email office@thringstone.leics.sch.uk or by phone 01530 222489. Thringstone Primary School has also recently received the exciting news that it has been awarded £7,500 from The Aviva Community Fund to develop an outdoor imagination area. The project was selected as a judge’s choice winner, having already received over 1,000 votes from parents and the local community.

Roof Repairs Start Transformation Of Old Pub Into New Market Article written by North West Leicestershire Council

The transformation of a former Coalville pub into an indoor market has now started with repairs to the roof. Scaffolding will be erected on the former Litten Tree pub on Marlborough Square, which North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) bought last month as part of its Building Confidence in Coalville regeneration programme. Once work is complete, a new indoor market will be created, with existing stalls from the current market hall being joined by other traders. Regular outdoor markets will be held just outside the new indoor space once the planned redesign of Marlborough Square is complete and there will be the opportunity for events to be held inside and out. The roof repairs will help to bring the old pub up to modern building standards and will take between two and four weeks to complete, depending on the weather. The work will include:

• Removing and replacing slates • Removing the stone chipping • Installing insulation • Installing a new roof cover • £600,000 has been allocated by the council for the purchase and revamp of the building

Existing market traders are being supported to move into the new indoor market, onto the new outdoor market or into suitable retail space in the town. Grants and free business advice is available to these traders. The council also hopes to offer the opportunity for new businesses and start-ups to trade at the revamped indoor market as part of its plans to regenerate the town. Councillor Richard Blunt, Leader of North West Leicestershire District Council, said: “Anyone looking at the old Litten Tree can see that the building is in a sorry state, and this is one of the things that convinced us to buy it and turn it into a lively market and events space. We’re working with private investors around the town to bring empty, unattractive buildings back into use – the former Pick and Shovel is now a high quality apartment development and the crumbling former bus depot has been given a new lease of life as a car showroom. Both of these projects involved our work and financial support and we’re very proud of this. “The Litten Tree is on Marlborough Square, where we are planning to create an attractive public open space – it makes perfect sense for us to transform the building into a welcoming market hall and bring complementary indoor and outdoor markets into the centre of town.” The detailed designs for the new indoor market are currently being drawn up. The current market will stay open at the existing Market Hall until the new market is ready to trade.

Write To Find Your Voice Article written by Fliss Middleton

About this time last year, I went into a local post office carrying several large brown, cardboard-backed envelopes. The woman behind the counter weighed them and then having noticed that each one was addressed to a different book publisher asked me “Have you written a book?” I told her that I had written a children’s book and was hoping to find a publisher who would want to produce it. She quickly volunteered the fact that she was looking for a way to produce a bound collection of the stories that her grandmother had written and which the family had discovered only recently following her death. They were not interested to sell the stories but rather wanted them as keepsakes for family members and friends of their grandmother. I advised her as best I could. Many people have ambitions in relation to writing. Some long to write the next ‘Harry Potter’ or ‘50 Shades of Grey’, whilst others would be more than happy to see their memoirs or a poetry anthology in print. Some individuals have no such lofty aims but merely write for the pleasure of expressing themselves or feel they have an important message to pass on through the written word. Of course, writing can be very therapeutic, helping us to deal with trauma or explore experiences we don’t feel able to talk about.

A Lot Going On At Leicester Animal Aid, Huncote! Article written by Jane Walters

Every month at the Centre there are fixed dates for fundraising events to help support the animals of Leicester & Leicestershire Animal Aid (LAA), a well-regarded Sanctuary and pet re-homing centre based near Desford (address: Elmwood Farm, Huncote, LE9 3LE).

If you recognise yourself in any of these examples, if you do write or want to write perhaps you would consider joining a writer’s group. You will find and give support, ideas, information and gentle critiques – oh and have quite a lot of fun too! ‘The lamp that you light to brighten someone’s path will surely shine on you’ (anon) Fliss Middleton (Coalville Area Writers) flissm52@yahoo.com 07812 160 220

It would be lovely to welcome you to any or all of these events: please do help spread the word, and put the dates in your diary! First of all, on the first Saturday of each month, from 10am – 1pm, there is a Table-Top Sale and Coffee Morning (bacon rolls also available, together with delicious home-made cake). The next one will be Saturday 6th April. A great opportunity to meet up with friends. Also, on the third Saturday of alternate months is the very popular MiniMarket (food and refreshments also available). The next market will be the ‘Spring into Easter’ Mini-Market to be held on Easter Saturday, 20th April from 10am – 12.30pm. There are always loads of wonderful ‘pre-loved’ bargains on offer, as well as brand new items, beautiful handicrafts and home-made jams, marmalades, chutney and cakes. It really is worth coming to browse and buy on these days. As well as these fixed dates, there are also fun and educational events, including dog shows and dog training. Do keep your eye on the LAA website and Facebook page, but, as an example, these events include: Saturday 23rd March & repeated Saturday 27th April: 9.00am 12.30pm - ‘TTouch Workshop’ both to be held at the Leicester Animal Aid site

The Heart of England Chorus

Introduction to “Tellington TTouch Training for Dogs” workshop. Do consider booking onto this course if your dog: pulls on the lead, has separation anxiety, dislikes being groomed, barks or chews excessively, gets overly excitable or nervous, or jumps up. This course also covers helping a dog recover from illness or surgery, and helps you bond more closely together, working towards enhancing your pet’s life. See website www.leicesteranimalaid.org.uk/what-we-do/ttouch for more details.

What a great response from our mixed “ Everyone in Harmony “ course that started last October, some 40 people came along on the first evening, and to date 18 have fully signed up with our newly formed mixed chorus.

The workshop costs £35 (payable in advance). To book your place call Jane Harvey, Tellington TTouch practitioner, on 07887 652 007 – 01455 289 121 or email: harveysdogs@gmail.com Or speak with Jane in the LAA Fundraising Office 01455 888 257. LAA founded in 1956 is a registered charity; Registered Charity Number: 242560

We even took our newest members to their first “ Singout “ at the Loros Christmas Concert in December which gave them a taste of performance in front of a large and appreciative audience This coming May we will be attending the annual Barbershop Convention in Bournemouth, competing as a mixed chorus for the first time. The inclusion of Ladies into what was a male chorus adds a new and exciting dynamic to our sound and should any other Ladies (and men) wish to join us then just come along, Monday evenings 7-30 Birstall Social Club.

The Loughborough Half Marathon Set To Raise Money For Domestic Abuse Survivors Article written by Gina King

Sunday 7th April sees the return of The Loughborough half marathon and team relay. The 13.1mile course has been described as one of the toughest in the East Midlands. Available places are hotly contested, with only 800 up for grabs this year. Organised by the Loughborough based charity Living Without Abuse, all the money raised from the event goes towards the charity’s vital and much needed work of supporting men, women and children who have had their lives shattered by domestic abuse. Living Without Abuse’s Event Organiser Gina King said: “This is the third and possibly last year the half-marathon will use this route and we are hoping for an excellent turnout. We only have 800 places available this year. The run is all on pavements, footpaths and pathways and is certainly tough but a fantastic course through some beautiful countryside.” This year the charity hopes to raise even more than last year’s figure of £20,000. It costs £400 to support just one person who is experiencing domestic abuse, so the money raised from this event makes a huge difference to people’s lives. Registration is now open and the entry fee for the half marathon is £26 for unaffiliated runners and £24 if you’re affiliated to a running club. There is also a Team Relay Challenge with four people per team with a total entry fee of £70.00. The event is co-sponsored by Duncan & Toplis Loughborough, A Plan Insurance Loughborough and the charity’s new headline sponsor for all events during 2019 Arch Communications. For more information and to enter the event please visit: www.lwa.org.uk/events/loughborough-half.asp or email gina@lwa.org.uk for an entry form.

Article written by North West Leicestershire District Council

The deadline to register to vote in local elections is fast approaching and North West Leicestershire District Council is urging residents who have not registered at their current address to make sure they are registered in time. On Thursday 2 May residents in North West Leicestershire will go to the polls to have their say on who represents them at a local level. The deadline to register to vote is midnight on Friday 12 April. Anyone can apply online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. It takes just five minutes. North West Leicestershire will this year take part in the Government’s voter I.D. pilot, meaning voters will need to bring their poll cards – or another certified form of I.D. – to be allowed to vote. Poll cards will be delivered to registered voters between Friday 22 March and Monday 1 April - people are being reminded to keep them safe and not throw their cards away. For more information on the Voter I.D. pilot visit www.nwleics. gov.uk/voterID If you were registered to vote in the last election and your details have not changed, you will still be registered to vote. County Cllr Michael Wyatt M: 07773 341531 E: mikewyatt1@hotmail.co.uk

Good News - Cocked Hat Site Clearance Begins Liberal Democrat Cllr Michael Wyatt has welcomed the news that work to clear the former Cocked Hat site off Cropston Drive in Greenhill for 8 additional dwellings as now started. Cllr Wyatt said, “It’s been a very long campaign to have this site utilised for rented accommodation. Sites like these should be the council’s priority for development, not our open countryside which is being absolutely decimated locally with large housing developments without contributing sufficient resources to services and highway infrastructure which is becoming a major problem. This brownfield site as been a blot on the local landscape for over a decade so I’m delighted at last action is finally taking place to improve the local area.”

Commercial Units On Bardon Road Given Green Light By Tory Planning Members Cllr Michael Wyatt spoke at the planning meeting urging members to oppose further development off Bardon Road in Coalville. Unfortunately all the Tory members of the planning committee decided to back the plans which will see an additional 200 extra vehicles added to the already busy Bardon Road. Cllr Michael Wyatt said, “I absolutely condemn the decision, yet again the Tories have let the people of Bardon down. It’s an absolute disgrace and come May 2nd I really hope the people of Bardon send a strong message that we have had enough of this madness. People need to realise who are response so I have no problem in naming and hopefully shaming the Councillors who fail to listen to genuine concerns expressed by local residents who are the ones who have to suffer the consequences of the actions of these clearly out of touch Councillors.” Councillors who voted to permit the units to be built off Bardon Road. Cllr Boam Tory, Cllr Smith Tory, Cllr Harrison Tory, Cllr Ashman Tory, Cllr Coxon Tory, Cllr Jones Tory and Cllr Richichi Tory Meeting notes and voting can be found at https://minutes-1.nwleics. gov.uk/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId=130&MId=1933&Ver=4

County Cllr Dr Terri Eynon T: 01530 832622 E: terri.eynon@leics.gov.uk

If you haven’t yet heard the news, then please don’t shoot the messenger. Your County Council tax is going up by 3.99%. That’s the maximum increase allowed before the ruling group have to call a local referendum. A quarter of this inflation-busting increase in your bill was allowed specially by the Government. It is so your Council can spend more on social care for frail and vulnerable people. Costing You More Why is the cost of care going up? Some reasons are like the weather and beyond political control. Thanks to better food and fewer infectious diseases, more and more people are living longer lives. But these aren’t always healthy lives. Non-communicable diseases, like diabetes and dementia are on the rise and there are more people needing social care. The cost of meeting the needs of older people will increase year on year increasing by £1.9M this year, £3M the next, £4M the year after and by £5M in 2022/3. Giving You Less Meanwhile the government is no longer giving your Council any money out of general taxation. Not a bean. They are also cutting the Council’s Public Health Grant by 2.6% making it harder for us to tackle the causes of ill-health in later life. Despite many Council tax-payers coughing up an additional £50 a year, there are still £1.7M service cuts – concealed in the term ‘demand management improvements’ – coming the way of people in need of care. And despite you making your contribution, the Council is still going to be short of £20M by 2022. This isn’t just a problem for Leicestershire. Across the country my colleagues in Labour-run Councils are facing the same pressures. And at least Leicestershire haven’t gone bust yet, like Tory-run Northamptonshire. The Poorest Pay More Some socially responsible people will welcome paying an extra £50 a year to their Council, seeing it as a good investment in a civil society. I have a problem with that. Changes to Council Tax Support mean that even those struggling on benefits are now expected to pay 15% towards Council services. This 3.99% increase will mean extracting an additional £7 a year from someone expected to live on £77 a week. By removing all Council revenue support this Tory government has quietly shifted the responsibility for creating a caring and civilised society away from the general taxation of the few who benefit most from living and working in this country and onto the shoulders of the many, including those least able to pay. Desperate Measures There are no new ideas in the Council budget this year. The cuts to come are the result of battles already fought and lost – for Sure Start Centres, Special Educational Needs Transport and subsided bus-routes. Financial rules that keep revenue (spending money) and capital (investments) apart mean that the Council can’t just sell off a few Sure Start centres and spend the money. It has to be invested in buildings and the like. I did suggest that the Council should look to invest its capital in care homes and other similar assets. Renting these to providers would bring in an income while helping reduce the future cost of social care. Despite rewriting some warm words about this idea in their investment strategy it seems the Tories decided to buy a Citroen garage in Leicester City instead. We can but try.

MP Andrew Bridgen

M: 01530 417736 E: andrew.bridgen.mp@parliament.uk One of the issues around Brexit which I keep reiterating, is that it’s trying to be delivered by a Parliament of whom three quarters of its members voted Remain. During the course of negotiations, those who supported and called for the UK to leave the EU have accepted concession after concession which has seen a Foreign Secretary, 2 Brexit Secretaries and several senior Ministers leave the Government as they fought to uphold both the 2016 referendum result and the principles outlined in the 2017 Conservative Party Manifesto which ( to remind you and colleagues) was to leave the Single Market ,the Customs Union and the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice. No significant figure has left the Government from the Remain side which is in itself very telling, as was the response to three Cabinet Ministers stating they would vote in Parliament to take “no deal” off the table during the negotiations. No censure was issued to them in spite of them publically speaking against the declared Government policy, that is “no deal is better than a bad deal”.They and all those MP’s wanting no deal taken off the table are either extremely naïve negotiators or are looking for the UK to actually remain locked to the EU in perpetuity. Perhaps it should be those Cabinet Ministers who resign if they are not prepared to see the referendum result implemented. It is clear that we have to be prepared to leave with no deal, If there is a successful vote to take no deal off the table, it would be akin to buying a car by locking yourself in the showroom and insisting to the salesman that you have to buy a car before you leave.

There have been numerous other achievements by the Conservative run District Council over the past 12 years such as a range of community events and support ,the developing of exciting schemes such as the new Leisure Centre for Coalville, an upgrade of Hood Park Leisure Centre and investment in bringing derelict buildings in Coalville back into use. We have also seen a bypass delivered for Kegworth and work has begun on the much needed relief road for Castle Donington. All of this has been possible by the Council being able to share the proceeds of “our local economic growth” which has and continues to be among the highest in the whole country. The one big challenge all Council’s face is their town centres. We all know how shopping is changing with more items bought on the internet, and the inevitable knock on effect that has on our High Streets. For the past few years I have been working to bring commercial developers into Coalville to enhance the shopping experience but ultimately, it did not work out due to huge increases in online shopping. We therefore have to do what we can to improve our current offering and get visitors and shoppers back into the town centre. I am urging the District Council to do more on free car parking and to bring a cinema into the town along with associated food and leisure outlets and I believe this can be delivered and completed with the Council remain8ng Conservative controlled. So my message in May is to keep your present District Council in place to keep delivering for North West Leicestershire. Let’s Keep North West Leicestershire Conservative on May 2nd.

EARAXXX- 08/2018

The District Council elections are being held in May, these are important as they were the first elections I was involved in as a Parliamentary candidate when the Conservatives took office in 2007 after 3 decades of Labour rule. Since that time we have seen rapid progress in transforming North West Leicestershire and the way its Council is run. Instead of wasteful tax and spend we have had a decade of frozen Council Tax, we have seen record economic and housing growth, falling unemployment, new Council houses being built and existing Council houses bought up to and maintained to the decent homes standard. We also adopted a local development plan in 2017 to control where new building will take place.
