Woodland Destruction In Coalville Article written by Concerned Resident

As you will be aware, massive housing developments have been granted in the Coalville area of NW Leics. One of these is behind Highfield Road in Colaville. To enable this development to go ahead, a large area of natural woodland is to be cleared, only a small part of which is protected. The developer has started clearance even though only outline permissions are in place. This picture shows the swathe of land that has been cleared. A major shame for the woodland and the natural habitat of the creatures that inhabit it. Whilst I appreciate that this land belongs to the developer and that they can clear the land if they want to, I think it would be great if any pressure could be brought to bear that prevents any further clearance... ever.

Friends Of The Charnwood Forest Article written by Dr D McNeil

On the 15th April at the Woodhouse Eaves village hall The Friends of the Charnwood Forest had a talk on Stoneywell Cottage, and, in particular, its gardens. Mr Roy Mitchell started the story of Stonewell’s history with a list of personalities and some statistics. Apparently the Cottage came into existance when, through an arrangement with a local farmer, the land was exchanged for a farm house designed and built by the Gimsons. Later an adjoining patch of wood was purchased. The Gimson family were part of the Arts and Crafts movement which was a reaction to the industry of Victorian Britain. The original setting of the Cottage was intended to be wild, although a few trees were planted and paths were landscaped. It was intended as a summer retreat only (plus Christmas), which is as well as the pantry regularly flooded in winter. In the 1950’s Donald Gimson and his family used it as a full-time residence. He and his wife were keen gardeners; she kept meticulous notes on the garden. By 2013 it had become too much for him, and control passed to the National Trust. It seems that this transfer was somewhat irregular financially. The talk finished with a series of pictures taken though the year which showed some of the garden’s floral highlights. Incidentally, with the help of those notes, the garden is maintained by 200 volunteers.

This event is for children aged 4-11 years and must be prebooked. Tickets cost £3 per child. Book your ticket now to avoid disappointment!

Her misery had been going on for nearly three months before she first received acupuncture from Doctor Ye in early March. “I’d had a worrying time with family, looking after my mum, who’d had a fall and lives down south. Then my brother had an accident, following which I popped two muscles in my chest. To cap it all, Steve’s mum died in Cyprus. “My mind wouldn’t settle. It was if I had forgotten how to sleep,” she says. After hours of lying in bed awake, she would get up and take

“After just four sessions out of 12, it was as if Doctor Ye had tapped into something and freed me. I felt sleep come naturally one night when I went to bed.”

During the day, her insomnia dragged her down, making her depressed and irritable. “I was tearful and felt like a waste of space,” she says. Just in time a customer showed them a feature in the paper about one of the many people who’ve been helped by acupuncture treatment at Herbal Healing in Coalville. Vaso says: “I’d never thought of it but always keep an open mind. We booked a course of sessions. I am so glad we did!”

Now well in to her treatment, she has four more sessions to go and is well on the way to returning to a full eight hours sleep every night. She is feeling much more lively too. Vaso says: “I am so grateful to Doctor Ye and delighted to be able to start getting on with my life again.” “They are lovely, friendly and reassuring – treating everyone as an individual, they have time for you. The actual treatment sessions are great and so relaxing.” She has the following advice: “Anyone suffering pain or any sort of ailment should give themselves the best chance of feeling better, by calling the clinic on 01530 810888.”

Global Fleet Company Celebrates Industry Talent At Local Leicestershire College Article written by Sarah Murray Fortune 500® global fleet management company, Ryder, celebrated its technical talent at the final of its UK TopTech recognition programme on Wednesday 3rd April at Leicestershire’s Stephenson College. The event saw five talented finalists from the company’s 296 UK-based Technicians go head-to-head in a series of six, 45-minute challenges. The finalists were measured on their diagnostic skills, technical abilities, adherence to health and safety, and quality workmanship. Thanks to the success of last year’s event, Stephenson College, located in Coalville, was once again chosen to host Ryder’s UK TopTech recognition programme at its state-of-the-art campus on Thornborough Road. The college delivers Ryder’s Trainee HGV Technician Apprenticeship Scheme, which has been running for more than 25 years. The annual competition was open to all Ryder HGV Technicians throughout the UK and the finalists outshone over 200 other Ryder Technicians over the course of two rounds to reach the challenging final round. The winner was announced as Rhys Anderson from Edinburgh at a glittering awards ceremony held at the Appleby Park Hotel that same evening. The event not only celebrated the winner, but every Technician who took part. As part of the ceremony, Rhys was awarded with the cut crystal winner’s trophy, which will be on display in Ryder’s Edinburgh location until UK TopTech 2020, a £2,000 cash prize, and an all-expenses paid trip to see the live final of US TopTech in Indianapolis, USA. Another success story is Alistair Davis, former Ryder apprentice and Grand Finale Runner Up. Alistair will be completing his HNC this year. His appearance in the Grand Finale serves as real evidence of the quality of Ryder’s Apprentice Programme at Stephenson College, as well as what apprentices can go on to achieve. These weren’t the only prizes, as each finalist was presented with a host of gifts including; finalists’ cheques, a £500 Snap-on voucher, Bridgestone and DAF watches, Mercedes and DAF branded duffel bags, a Fitbit and Mercedes branded jackets. The UK TopTech 2019 winner did extremely well in the Grand Finale, however it wasn’t all smooth sailing for Rhys, as the opening tasks put each Technician’s nerves to the test.

Appeal On Behalf Of Long-Stay Residents At Leicester Animal Aid, Huncote Article written by Jane Walters

At Leicester Animal Aid (LAA), we do everything we can to make sure that all the dogs and cats that come into our Huncote Centre (near Desford) receive good food, excellent veterinary care and individual attention to keep them healthy and to help them feel secure and loved. We care for and re-home more than 400 cats and dogs every year who are lost, abandoned, unwanted or because their owners can no longer look after them. We try our hardest to make each animal’s stay with us as enjoyable and stress-free as possible. But sometimes it can take a bit longer for some cats and dogs to find the right home. We match each one carefully - based on their individual needs - to new homes, acting a bit like a dating agency for pets and new owners! See our website for the dogs and cats currently searching for new homes www.leicesteranimalaid.org.uk Our dogs have a fantastic indoor training barn with agility equipment complete with a soft play area and our cats enjoy being groomed and using the fabulous chill-out rooms and outdoor areas. However, the Centre isn’t a substitute for a long-term, loving home environment and we want each one of our dogs and cats to find a new forever family. Currently we have two long-stay dogs and one particular long-stay cat, who really need new homes – Could you help?

Dogs Katie and Taylor Stunning Katie, a five-year-old crossbreed has been at LAA for just over a year and she is searching for her forever home. She is lovely - an active and clever girl who loves to be outdoors playing and walking. Katie doesn’t like to miss out on things and can open doors herself! She is looking for a home where she is the centre of attention – so no other pets. Older teenage children would be perfect for her to snuggle up to. Staff put on a special party for her one year anniversary at the Centre. Katie’s handsome friend Taylor, a two-year-old crossbreed, came along and they had lots of fun in the training barn seeing who was best at agility. Taylor loves walks and always has his mind on hedgerows, trees and fields. Cat Simba A handsome, gentle boy, who loves his cuddles. Ginger and white Simba, a six year old domestic short hair, came to the Centre in November as his previous owner could no longer care for him. Simba is a very clever boy who loves his food and lots of human interaction. He enjoys spending time exploring the big wide world, so would need a quiet area where he can wander safely. He equally loves his home comforts and enjoys fuss and cuddles. Simba is quite needy and is desperately seeking closeness and attention. He can sometimes get a little over the top when playing or having snuggles but that is easily managed with a few positive training techniques. Because of this, an experienced cat owner and a home without any children under the age of 12 would be ideal. He wouldn’t want to share his new home with a canine companion. If you feel you could give a home to Katie, Taylor or Simba, please give the Centre a call.

County Cllr Dr Terri Eynon T: 01530 832622 E: terri.eynon@leics.gov.uk

By the time you get to read this all the fun may be over, so I do hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Your District Council isn’t just there to plan houses and collect rubbish and provide other sensible if slightly boring things. It is also there to build community and make this town a great place to live. Coalville Writes So I am really pleased that, together with the Arts Council, NWLDC funded the ‘Coalville Writes Festival’ 2nd – 12th May. What better way to spend a Bank Holiday Monday than at a Story Day featuring street performers, storytellers, bookstalls? I really love street poet Dave Wood writing on-the-spot poems for passers-by. Last year’s ‘Walk in the Woods’ gave a guided tour of Coalville’s hidden nature reserve, a post-industrial landscape brimful of beauty where budding poets were encouraged get inspired to write. Local poet Sabrina Smith is on hand for this year’s workshop. If you get to read this before Thursday 9th, you might want book in www.coalvillewrites.co.uk. Mantle Arts Last year’s contributors were published afterwards by festival organisers, Mantle Arts who arranged for all kinds of writers to come to Coalville this year including Great British Bake Off winner Frances Quinn, crime novelists Edward Marston and Judith Cutler as well as local author Michael Kendrick. The Century Theatre The County Council’s very own Century Theatre is also part of the action putting on James Rowland’s Team Viking – a comic ode to death and friendship – on Wednesday 8th May. Featuring live music, side-splitting anecdotes and even an actual viking helmet, it had great reviews in The Stage and went down well at the Edinburgh Festival. Have a look at the Century website for shows, films and other events www.centurytheatre.co.uk Snibston Community Group The Century Theatre is looking forward to its own makeover this year as part of the refurbishment of the Snibston Mine site. Nothing can replace our beloved Discovery Museum, but prolonged mourning isn’t good for us either. The formation of a new Snibston Community Group to work with Leicestershire County Council is a chance to re-open the site to visitors. This is all going to take time, with the summer months being taken up with asbestos removal from some of the old buildings. The café extension to the Theatre will provide real opportunities to attract new visitors into the town centre, especially when the cycle way from Oliver’s Crossing is complete. I will keep you informed of developments. Friends of Coalville Park Another new community group worth celebrating are the ‘Friends of Coalville Park’. Our town centre park is working towards Green Flag status. Winning a Green Flag Award isn’t just about taking pride in our lovely Victorian park and improving the general cleanliness of the area. Access to additional non-Council funding can help us bring about improvements to health and education, reduce crime and kick-start regeneration in this area. The ‘Friends of Coalville Park’ have already taken on board suggestions voiced on local social media sites and have created their own Facebook page. People like you Mantle Arts, the Snibston Community Group, the Century Theatre and the Friends of Coalville Park all depend on people like you, people who care about our town, being prepared to give their time, effort and energy to the community. That’s the way we do things in Coalville.

County Cllr Michael Wyatt M: 07773 341531 E: mikewyatt1@hotmail.co.uk Oak Trees Set For Chop By Council! Cllr Michael Wyatt has urged the council to think again about cutting down two perfectly good oaks trees on land off Cropston Drive in Greenhill so the council can build further housing. Cllr Wyatt said, “Cutting down these two perfectly good oak trees is outrageous. We need to be planting more trees not cutting down trees which are helping to reduce pollution and the local wildlife. Building on this particular site is not required. There are other more suitable sites within the local area which can be utilised without destroying trees which are over 100 years old and in perfect condition. I really do hope the council think again about removing these trees.”
