BHUJON RESTAURANT REVIEW
Bhujon is a lovely restaurant serving authentic Bangladeshi cuisine on the High Street in Coalville. Parking is available at the back of the premises with entrance to the front and rear which was handy in the rain! A warm welcome awaits you on arrival and the menu is very varied and comprehensive with options to tailor your dish to suit your exact requirements. We enjoyed a lovely relaxing evening meal where each course was served with a smile and a chat and the flavours were second to none, waiting staff are happy to advise you if you would like to try something new. Managing Director Goyas Miah is quite rightly very proud of his restaurant and his presence made our evening very enjoyable. Bhujon also run a take away service where you can order online and their Sunday Buffet is apparently well worth booking in for and is something I’m looking forward to experiencing!

WELCOME TO THE NEW LOOK COALVILLE COMMUNITY EYE
e’ve enjoyed giving the magazine a fresh look and hope you enjoy reading it, especially as the winter nights are drawing in. This month we also launch our ‘getting your home ready for winter and the festive season page’ from turkey timings, gardening tasks, cleaning ovens and carpets with also various associated advertisers to help get the job done!
PRE-PAYMENT ONLY DECEMBER - JANUARY - FEBRUARY
Also new is our Charity Focus page which this month saw me visit STEPS Conductive Education Centre, it was a real eye opening morning and so lovely to meet Trish and the team to see what a valuable work they do. I myself have a disabled child and to know that such a wonderful positive place exists is fantastic. We are also looking to launch a schools page and are looking for local schools to send us outstanding achievements from their pupils, we aren’t judging children against each other so we also want to hear about those who have achieved well for them, this could be academically or in life skills, behaviour or emotional skills. Each month a winner will be chosen who will be presented with a certificate and featured in our magazine. We are also launching our newest magazine this month! The Loughborough Eye is being printed soon so if you would like to advertise in the first edition please get in touch. Advertising in our magazines is now even easier, just email or call us and we can design your advert for free! If you would like any more information about advertising or would like an article printing, please give us a call or drop us an email. Next month we will be looking at recycling your Christmas items, taking unwanted gifts to charity shops, and much more. I can’t believe 2013 has gone so fast!

MYLES BREMNER TO LAUNCH IVANHOE’S NEW DINING EXPERIENCE
“SUCCESS IS 99% FAILURE” SOICHIRO HONDA
On 6th November 2013 Myles Bremner, National Director of the Food School Plan www.twitter. com/MylesBremner, will launch Ivanhoe’s new dining experience. This will enable all to see and experience the fantastic new dining facilities. In attendance will be staff, students, educational heads, project contractors, local businesses and partners. Here at Ivanhoe we strive to work in line with the School Food Plan - an agreed plan that has the support of the Secretary of State for Education and of the diverse organisations who are going to support head teachers to improve food in their schools. www. schoolfoodplan.com You are invited to attend from 4pm to 5.30pm. The event will take place at Ivanhoe College, North Street, Ashbyde-la-Zouch, Leicestershire, LE65 1HX.
Honda’s ‘School of Dreams’ team recently visited Newbridge High School to provide a free two-day ‘thinking skills’ workshop for 9-13 year old pupils and educators. The workshop was supported by Marshall Honda, based in Mountsorrel, and staff from the company also participated in the workshop along with the students and teachers. The Community Eye was lucky enough to be invited to go along and watch the pupils present their ideas at the end.

WIRE WORKSHOP BENDS THE RULES A wire artist who helped students to create amazing animal sculptures at Ibstock. Community College earlier this year has made a return visit, due to popular demand. William AshleyNorman worked with students from all Year groups, using wire to sculpt a variety of creatures, including penguins, bats, seahorses, wolves and dinosaurs. Head of Art Sam McCarthy said: “The students have produced some amazing results. It is all about working with new materials - in this case, wire - and about getting boys more engaged in art. “This is the second time that William has been to ICC because he was so popular. Last time, we had students staying in voluntarily at lunchtime to finish their sculptures.” His visit tied in with the theme of recycling which Year 9s have been incorporating into their artwork. They have recently made 3D bugs from reclaimed materials. This time, different students got a chance to try their hands with wire. Miss McCarthy added: “Working with wire is challenging but William breaks it down into easy steps to make it achievable.”

Pupils from Castle Rock High School and Ibstock Community College also attended the workshop, giving children the chance to get to know peers from other schools. The School of Dreams programme helps young people to understand the importance of pursuing their dreams, and teaches skills and strategies to help turn their dreams into reality. It was developed by Honda (UK) and a team of independent education experts as part of Honda’s commitment to giving back to the local communities in which it operates. School of Dreams helps students and educators discover different, creative and fun ways to learn. Over the last seven years, School of Dreams has been delivered in more than 200 schools across the UK, directly engaging around 10,000 students and educators. Additionally, the programme has been designed to create an ongoing legacy beyond each workshop. Students are encouraged to become ‘Sharers’ and ‘Doers’, by both taking what they have learnt and cascading it to others, and by organising team projects which aim to change something in their local community for the better. The programme runs an awards scheme which recognises this sharing and doing, as well as offering financial assistance and a range of support materials. In many cases local Honda representatives have become ‘Mentors’, helping teams of students to turn their legacy projects into reality. It is estimated that to date more than 30,000 further students and educators have benefitted from the cascade programme. The workshop was challenging but great fun. Teachers and pupils worked at the same level in small groups and learnt how to turn their dreams into reality by using reallife examples of people who have achieved their dreams, as well as developing new skills such as juggling. Jody Bradley, Sales Manager at Marshall Honda, said: “It is great to support the workshop in our local school. To help children understand they can turn their dreams into reality by learning to use strategies in their early lives will undoubtedly have a positive effect on the local community. We believe children and young adults deserve all the help they can get.” Katrina Farragher, Assistant Headteacher at Newbridge High School, added: “The School of Dreams gave the pupils a real opportunity to see how their dreams could become a future reality. All the pupils put aside any fears they had and threw themselves into the tasks. The School of Dreams is innovative and enjoyable for all.”

JAMIE MCMAHON IS LABOUR’S CANDIDATE North West Leicestershire Labour Party has selected Jamie McMahon to be the local Labour parliamentary candidate at the next General Election. Jamie, who works for a children’s charity locally, will challenge Tory MP Andrew Bridgen to be the next Labour MP and follow in the footsteps of Labour’s last local MP David Taylor. Jamie said: “I’m delighted to be selected as Labour’s parliamentary candidate.”. “People in Coalville are struggling in Britain’s cost of living crisis and only a Labour Government will tackle it. Wages are frozen, food prices are rising and energy bills are hiked time and time again. However, David Cameron is Conservative led government are doing nothing to help.”

Jamie continued: “Labour is determined to tackle the cost of living crisis in this country. That’s why the next Labour government has promised to freeze energy bills for two years if elected in 2015 while we fix a broken market focused on profits. That’s why Labour has promised tax breaks for businesses that commit to paying their staff the living wage. “A Labour government will help people in Coalville with the cost of living. It’ll be my top priority here in Coalville and Ed Miliband’s top priority as Prime Minister.”Jamie wants to hear the thoughts of Coalville residents on how we tackle Britain’s cost of living crisis. SUMMER CLEAR OUT COSTS HOUSEHOLDER DUMPED toys, books and videotapes led council officers to prosecute a Coalville man for fly-tipping in Charnwood. Ismet Aydemir, 50, of Clarence Drive, Coalville, was ordered to pay a total of £912.25 after pleading guilty to a charge of failing to use a licensed waste carrier to remove waste from his property. Leicester Magistrates’ Court heard how Charnwood Borough Council enforcement officers were called to investigate a fly-tip in a ditch in Charley Road, Shepshed, on June 4. The waste pile contained letters, certificates, clothes, books, bin bags, folders, toys, and videos which led officers to Aydemir. Aydemir told the Council he was refurbishing his home and was approached by ‘scrap metal men’ who offered to take away his rubbish. Much of the waste was later dumped. Councillor Jane Hunt, Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Regulatory Services, said: “This case is a perfect example of householders failing to understand that they have a duty of care to ensure people who remove waste from their homes have a licence to do so. “In this case, the defendant said he was not aware of this duty of care. But if a householder’s waste is found dumped, then it is the householder who will be held responsible. “Our annual Don’t Muck Around campaign aims to educate our residents about duty of care because we take our stewardship of the environment very seriously and we will take action where necessary.”Aydemir was fined £250 and ordered to pay costs of £637.25 and a victim surcharge of £25. To report environmental offences in Charnwood, call in confidence on 01509 634564 or email cleaner.greener@charnwood.gov.uk. CHRISTMAS IS COMING AND THE BELVOIR SHOPPING CENTRE Christmas is coming and the Belvoir Shopping Centre has a range of Christmas activities this year. It all starts on Saturday 1 December and the centre is working with North West Leicestershire District Council for the annual Christmas in Coalville, an event for all of the family. During the afternoon shoppers will be amazed by the centre’s roller skating snow woman. She will be skating up and down the centre to greet all of the shoppers and have 250 free Christmas candy canes to give away. The centre is also working with the Churches Together Coalville group and is welcoming them back after their summer’s Olympic cafe success. On Saturday 8 and 15 December, St Margaret Street Church will be helping shoppers with their present wrapping. If shoppers have gifts they need wrapping, the volunteers from the Church are armed with paper, bows, tags, scissors and tape ready to wrap gifts for free, taking the hassle out of preparing for the big day. This will be available from 10am until 3.30pm outside Home Bargains and will be weather permitting. On Saturday 15 December at 3.30pm there will be a carol concert in the centre put on by the Churches Together Coalville group. There will be a drama about the Christmas story and music provided by the Snibston Co-op brass band. Shoppers staying for the concert will also be treated to non alcoholic punch, mince pies and fairy cakes all for free. During Saturday 8, 15 and 22 December, Santa and his sleigh will be stopping off in Coalville and meeting all of the children. Parents will be able to take the children’s’ picture with Santa and Coalville Rotary club will be collecting for its charities. Speaking about the festive activities a spokesperson at the Belvoir Shopping Centre said: “We’ve got some great plans for the run up to Christmas and we are very grateful to all of the organisations involved in helping us make it a Christmas to remember”.
Although I’ve been away for the last three months our group has been carrying on and going from strength to strength. In July we had an outing to Ulverscroft Grange, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all, from the light refreshments to the delightful walks through the woodlands, and the viewing of the miniature railway layout. Our August meeting took us to the Greyhound PH at Midway, where we had Lunch from their very large but reasonably priced menu. We were all very pleased with our welcome and the service there. Our September meeting saw us back at our base, where we had a talk on Smoking Cessation, which most of us were completely au fait with, but was very useful to keep us updated. In October we had a talk from members of Age UK., who explained to us about the benefits we could possibly be entitled to and how to apply for these. It’s surprising what is available to sufferers, but no-one explains these things, and it’s mostly down to the to the complainant to find out themselves, but by making a call to your local Age UK branch they will be able to help you., and will even send an adviser to help you with a claim. Our November meeting is our AGM, when we will be electing our committee for the next 12 months. Our BreathEasy Exercise classes, AKA ‘Exercise your Lungs, Coalville’ have also been growing in the numbers attending our sessions. This is most satisfying, as it proves the worth that our members put onto the value of regular supervised exercise. We hold our classes every Thursday afternoon from 3.00-4.00 PM. at Coalvile Labour Club, Bridge Street, Coalville, and everyone is invited. Both old and new members are welcome to attend. If you’re interested in joining us just pop along to one of our sessions, or give Eunice a call on 07790 278435. She would be pleased to hear from you, and to give you any information you may require.

SMARTI PAINTS LIMITED Smarti Paints is a local Social Enterprise business, (meaning it’s a business that helps people or communities) that provides various craft experiences to adults with a range of disabilities across Leicestershire. Set up by Victoria Robinson earlier this year it now reaches over 70 people every week across the County. Despite being a very new business it’s already been nominated for a Pride Of Loughborough Award. Victoria is very honoured to be nominated and is pleased that her business has gained some recognition as it can be very hard to raise awareness of organisations who work with the disabled. Victoria is fully CRB checked and also has many qualifications relating to the business. Her ability to step back and allow independent learning is one of the reasons Smarti Paints is such a success. To be able to allow disabled clients to learn and work at their own speed and to their own ability can be quite a hard thing to do with many people wrongly trying to ‘assist’ them too much. The real ethos is that people can have access to experiences which they’ve not had the opportunity to try before, in a safe environment with no pressure or expectations. It’s environments such as these with professionals as passionate as Victoria that enables disabled adults to flourish and achieve. Activities available include paper crafts, glass painting, ceramic design, sewing and woodwork. One great advantage of their service is that due to the changes in living allowance payments, disabled individuals can control their own budgets and payments, which enables them to choose which service works best for them, hence people can choose Smarti Paints as a social and educational resource without needing to join the long waiting lists so often associated with activity groups for disabled individuals. Smarti Paints hold a range of different taster sessions and are extremely adept at tailoring their activities to suit the end users individual needs to ensure everyone achieves according to their own ability. If you would like to take part in a craft session or are a friend, relative or carer of someone who you feel may benefit and enjoy craft sessions with Victoria please get in touch with them either via email victoria@smartipaints.co.uk or 0116 2302 203 more information can also be found online. All of us at Open Box Promotions wish Smarti Paints best of luck with their Pride of Loughborough nomination.
NATIONAL POETRY DAY COMPETITION FOR COALVILLE LIBRARY Victoria Barton from the Coalville library said “We had entries from adults only this time. We received a total of 24 poems which were all of a very high standard. It was very tricky to judge the competition as there were so many great entries. The library staff judged the poems as a group and we came up wtih a really good selection of poems and first, second and third place entries which I’m sure you will agree are really brilliant poems each with their own unique style and voice.” Open Box Promotions which runs the Community Eye and the Your Local magazine’s awarded the winner with a £25 book voucher. See below the top 3 winning entries and also a selection of other great entries.

And light or heavy they may be, A common dampness they all share, the clouds? Cascading as it downwards falls with rainbow colours bright, Or dark and still, of untold depth, of’t as black as night. Crashing hard, a thunderous roar, or singing in the rill. A common dampness they all share, a river? ‘Tis all of this and much much more, ‘tis vapour, steam and snow. Adapting, changing, oft’ unseen. A treasure, H2O
MRS. SHEILA CLAGUE OF COALVILLE “WATER, WATER”
Water, water, where does it go, In the bath to wash our toes, Or down the drains far below, Running fast or going slow, Children in wellies, make a dash, In puddles, jump and make a splash, Flooding houses make people cry, Watching the water go rushing by, Clouds in the sky make the rain pour down, Umbrellas up, as it hits the ground, Rain for the gardens to make flowers grow, But where, oh where does the water go.
MRS. DEBORAH GRAY OF COALVILLE SPLISH, SPLASH, SPLOSH
Children in wellies splashing in puddles, Splish, splash, splosh. In the bath with lots of bubbles, Splish, splash, splosh. In the swimming pool Or paddling in the sea We love water my sister and me.

Top Tips To Do For The Festive Season • Leave your heating on for at least an hour a day while you are away from home. • In severe weather, or if severe weather is forecast, you should leave your heating on day and night at your usual temperature setting. • Check that loft insulation is laid over, and under pipes in the loft. • Make sure that you know where your stop tap is, and that it works so that you can turn off the water supply if needed. • Consider asking a friend or relative to visit your home every day while you are away. This will mean that, if you do suffer a burst pipe, it will be detected as soon as possible. Make sure that they know where the stop tap is located. • If high winds are forecast, make sure objects such as garden furniture or ladders are fully secured. • Set your heating to come on just before you get up and switch off after you’ve gone to bed. If it’s very cold, set your heating to come on earlier and turn off later rather than turning the thermostat up. • If you can’t heat all the rooms you use, heat the living room throughout the day and your bedroom just before you go to bed. Remember to close curtains and shut doors to keep heat in the rooms you use most. • Fit draught proofing to seal any gaps around windows and doors. • Check your guttering is clear from leaves.
• Make sure that your loft has at least 10-11 inches (270 mm) of insulation. Any home with 4 inches (100 mm) or less should have it topped up. • If you have wall cavities, make sure that they are insulated too. • Insulate your hot water cylinder and pipes. • Draw your curtains at dusk to help keep the heat generated inside your rooms. • Make sure that your radiators are not obstructed by curtains or furniture. • Get your home ready for winter. Get heating and cooking appliances checked, flues and chimneys swept ensuring ventilation points are not blocked. If you use heating oil, LPG or wood products as the main heating source, make sure that you have a sufficient supply to avoid running out. Fit an audible carbon monoxide alarm which is EN50291 compliant, but fitting an alarm should not replace regular maintenance of appliances. • Good hand hygiene can help prevent the spread of norovirus. • Learn a few simple first aid steps; such as how to deal with strains and sprains or broken bones, as trips and falls can increase in icy weather. There are a number of accredited first aid providers and useful education resources available. • Check the forecast and ensure you have enough food and medicines. • Check on elderly neighbours, Clean carpets, Clean ovens & Don’t leave shopping till the last minute!

TIME TO TALK ABOUT LEISURE CENTRES Help us make our leisure centres the best they can be – by taking part in our listening weeks. Between now and December we’ll be asking people walking through our doors what they think so we know where we’re doing well, and where we need to improve. We’ll be at five sites all across the district, starting at Hermitage Leisure Centre this week before visiting Ashby, Measham, Ibstock and Castle Donington. Councillor Alison Smith MBE, deputy leader and portfolio holder for leisure, said: “Our listening weeks are your chance to give us your views – both good and bad – about our facilities, products and services. “What our customers think is always top of our agenda when we are developing services and programmes for the year ahead. “During Listening Week everyone visiting our facilities will be encouraged to give their views – and everything you tell us will be used to help us improve.” Last year 570 customers took part in Listening Week. As a result of what people told us, we’ve already fitted new air conditioning and lighting – and we’re improving the changing rooms at Hood Park Leisure Centre in December.
