WELCOME TO YOUR FEBRUARY LOUGHBOROUGH COMMUNITY EYE MAGAZINE! I hope this finds you not too cold or windswept! I was out meeting local businesses during the snow last week and need to say a big thank you to everyone for making me so welcome and warm in their shops! We aim to make this magazine a joy to read, interspersed with useful adverts. The Loughborough Eye is delivered free to 7000 homes and businesses across the town so it’s a cost effective way of reaching a large audience. We also offer a flyer printing and delivery service (with our magazines) to local businesses. This is our 4th edition now and I’m really pleased to see so many community groups and charities sending us articles and reports in, of course to ensure we have room for all the articles we need more advertising so if you are interested in advertising or in booking your leaflets in for delivery with our magazine please don’t hesitate to get in touch. On Friday 14th February Andy from Open Box Promotions did a sponsored walk from Leicester Forest East to Coalville to raise much needed funds for Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance service. As you are aware Open Box Promotions, home of Your Local and Community Eye magazines, have been taking part in the Big Business Challenge and was competing against other business’ to try and raise as much money as possible for DLR Air Ambulance in just a few weeks! In addition to our ‘Wear it Yellow’ day Andy dressed up as a duck to help us to raise even more money. Andy also popped into local stores on his way as well as Hermitage FM who gave us a shout out over the radio. We are always looking for images of the town to use on our front cover so feel free to send any across. I hope you enjoy this edition.

GROW WITH THE TIMES, URGES LOCAL TAX EXPERT LOUGHBOROUGH News that the UK’s economy is growing at the fastest rate since 2007 will help bolster business confidence, but small businesses in Loughborough need to grow with the times, according to a local specialist. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures demonstrate that the UK economy grew by 1.9 per cent in 2013 and 0.7 per cent in the fourth quarter most recently. Phil Marriott and Carl Whitehead who run TaxAssist Accountants in Loughborough said: “There’s definitely a light at the end of the tunnel for local small businesses, but after years of being conservative and making cut backs, Loughborough’s small businesses need to look to grow with the times. The Chancellor has given small businesses a helping hand by capping business rates and freezing fuel duty rises and business owners we’ve been speaking to are now looking carefully at the challenges and opportunities for growth.” Phil and Carl are advising local entrepreneurs on the financial planning and reporting tools they need to access finance in order to sustain and grow their business and has put together some top tips:

TOP TIPS FROM TAX ASSIST

- Work with your advisers to produce a clear business plan and cashflow forecast backed up by reliable evidence and a good demonstration of your skills - Banks will expect to take some form of security and see at least 30% of your own money injected into the proposal - if you do not have security available, enquire about the Enterprise Finance Guarantee Scheme - Show that the borrowing requested will be paid back and that it’s enough to run the business and fund your living costs - Avoid borrowing too little as under borrowers could be forced to go back to the bank within a year - Make sure you don’t borrow too much or you will pay more in interest than you need to - Keep in touch with your bank and provide them with up to date information including good news and bad news - banks do not like surprises!

BRAND NEW SPECIAL SCHOOL OPENS DOORS EARLY It’s out with the old and in with the new for Charnwood youngsters who’ll be setting foot in their new cutting-edge school for the first time next week. Pupils from Ashmount School in Loughborough are moving in to their ultra-modern £9.3 million special school on Monday (13th) – this is two months ahead of schedule. It offers places for 125 children and young people aged between four and 19 and includes a hydrotherapy pool, sensory area with interactive floor and art work created by pupils. Built by Leicestershire County Council, the school is located on Thorpe Hill campus next to Charnwood College. Ivan Ould, Leicestershire County Council’s cabinet member for children and young people, said: “It’s terrific news that the project has been completed on-budget and ahead of schedule. The new school features cutting-edge, modern facilities and will enrich the lives of young people and their families. It will also act as a valuable resource for other local mainstream schools with opportunities to share facilities and knowledge." Ashmount School head teacher, Dave Thomas, said: "The new building is a dream come true and our children and families deserve no less. It means that we can have a spacious, light, modern learning environment and enables us to expand our inclusive work with Charnwood College and other Loughborough schools. We aspire to become a National Teaching School and as such, the facilities at our new site will put us in strong position to increase our training and school to school support functions even further." Mark Sutton, Charnwood College principal, said "Having watched the new special school take shape over the last year, we are very excited that Ashmount students will finally be joining us on Thorpe Hill. The facilities are state of the art and will provide the learning environment that really does meet their needs. We are really looking forward to working much more closely with Ashmount and sharing our facilities and expertise."

CARILLON TOWER & WAR MEMORIAL MUSEUM NEWS GET IN TOUCH 01509 263370 - CARILLONMUSEUM@GMAIL.COM

UPDATED NEWS ON LOUGHBOROUGH’S TANK In last month’s magazine there was a piece about a tank that was presented to Loughborough in appreciation of the town’s money raising efforts during WW1. My mother remembers it behind the Drill Hall on Granby Street. In fact the caption on the photograph says, ‘behind the Drill Hall’ judging by the stack of gas bottles in the photograph I would guess that this photo was taken when they were cutting it up for scrap. Thank you to Mr Kevin Mitchell for sending in the photographs, I have some special memories of the Drill Hall but in an act of council vandalism it was knocked down to make way for a multi million pound shopping centre, which was never built! However on the wall that separates the car park from Queens Park, where the Drill Hall stood, you can still see the Olive Drab paint. There is a saying in the army, “If it moves – salute it! If it don’t - paint it!”

Mr Rex Gregson takes up the story: ”There was some discussion as to whether the town was to receive a German machine gun, a German field gun or a British tank. Eventually a tank was settled on, and it arrived on Saturday, 20th March 1920, at the railway station. Thence under its own power to Queen's Park, where the Mayor was hoping that a large crowd would be present to greet it.

Sadly, only a small crowd was there for the ceremony, which featured a stirring speech from Tank Corps Lieutenant AL Roberts, MC, who commanded the delivery crew. He was, in fact, a Loughborough boy, but nothing had been made of his local connection when the presentation details had been announced. A pity, as that might have drawn a larger crowd.”

HOME GUARD PLAQUE DONATED

COMINGS AND GOINGS

Donated by Mr Denis Nelson of Loughborough, this wall plaque was rescued from a skip some time ago and he has asked us to give it a proper home. It says’ ‘E’ Coy No 21 (Beaumanor) Pl 10th Home Guard Bn The Leicestershire Regt. (17th Foot) on the back is written, ‘Presented by Major B E Arnold.’

Cassandra Costelow is the new manager at Charnwood Museum and started on the 6th January. Previously she was Visitor Services Officer at Snibston Discovery Museum in Coalville; where she had been for the last six years.

There is book about the Home Guard during WW2 by Austin Ruddy: To the Last Round: Leicestershire & Rutland Home Guard 1940 to 1945. it is available from Amazon. The Home Guard has suffered with an image problem but reading the book you realise the sacrifices the men of the Home Guard made and in some cases that sacrifice was their life.

FIELD MARSHALL KITCHENER Field Marshall Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener, KG KP GCB OM GCSI GCMG GCIE ADC PC (24 June 1850 – 5 June 1916) was born in Ireland but a bloke at the bar insists that is family lived in Cossington and that after he was injured in Sudan spent his convalescence there and that a member of his family is buried in Cossington Cemetery. Can any one support this story? Kitchener, star of the ‘Country Needs You’ iconic Great War poster must be the most recognisable figures of that era and it would be nice if Leicestershire could claim some part of him. Our correspondent in the Orkneys, Liz Low, confirms he was drowned along with 643 crew members of HMS Hampshire in 1916 when the ship struck a mine off the islands. There is a memorial to him on the cliffs above the site. His nickname by WW1 was ‘Captain Chaos’ out of touch and unpopular with both politicians and his fellow officers. Not everyone mourned his passing.

6

She told us she is very excited to have joined now; when so much will be happening this year and beyond and can’t wait to get stuck in! If you go into the museum please introduce yourself and say hello. We too have gained a couple of new Volunteers, Mssrs Dick Norton and Matt Broughton. Dick is going to take responsibility for our retail sales, we have been pretty poor in the past in promoting and developing sales, having met with Dick on a couple of occasions and I am very confident about future improvements. Matt is a young man and he is going to look at the publication, Matchbox Guide. This booklet was produced as an handbook for the Museum Guides giving details of some of the objects in our collection so that they could engage with the visitors with confidence boosted by knowledge. Matt is in employment so this project is ideal in that he can do it at home in his own time. He has promised us a brighter and better presented booklet, split into three sections, one for each room. He also intends to turn up on Wednesday’s to help those volunteers working on the displays. On a sad note however we are losing Alice Catlow who will not be re-joining us at the start of the season. Alice has been one of those unsung stalwarts manning the museum on a Sunday afternoon. Alice works full time at Rawlins and also does casual work at Charnwood Museum. She told me, “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time volunteering in the Carillon. I have learnt a lot and met some wonderful people with stories to share. I can thoroughly recommend it". She will be sadly missed but we wish all the very best in the future.

ORAL HISTORY PROJECT

DAME NELLIE MELBA

Charnwood Roots Project are looking for subjects to take part in the oral history part of this project. It has two sections, ‘Our Working Lives’ and ‘Charnwood's War’ these aim to collect brand new oral history recordings to be deposited in the East Midlands Oral History Archive. So for instance It could be someone’s stories and experiences working in agriculture or hosiery or other industries that have first hand knowledge in their careers. The same is true for the war stories it can be various topics of how this period affected individuals, communities, working life, the roles local people had during this period in a military or non military capacity. If you are interested in taking part or know of someone who has a story to tell then contact James May at: james-may@hotmail.co.uk

LOUGHBOROUGH BLOG Lynne Dyer contacted Carillon Chimes, she is a Leicestershire Tour Guide and blogs weekly about Loughborough. I must admit to knowing nothing about blogs but having visited her site I can see that it is a useful tool for keeping up to date. There is a column called ‘Labels’ on the right hand side of the page where you can find a keyword to take you to previous blogs about a subject that interests you. Some very good photos of Remembrance Sunday 2013. The link to Lynne’ blog is: www. lynneaboutloughborough.blogspot.co.uk

In a previous edition of the Carillon Chimes following an appearance of Dame Nellie Melba on Downton Abbey I mentioned that she had attended the opening ceremony of the carillon in 1923. I was then slightly surprised to have an email from Australia, (our readership is worldwide) from Mr Scott Benton who looks after the Estate of Melba at Coombe Cottage, Coldstream. About an hours drive east of Melbourne. They are just about to open a Visitors Centre including a gallery The Estate of Melba at Coombe about the life of Nellie. There are seven acres of formal gardens created by her; one hundred years ago. They ask if any of our readers are visiting Australia they might visit the centre. You can find them on Facebook at: Coombe – The Melba

WHERE THERE ARE NO FRONTLINES -'LIFE IN WAR' COMES TO BRITAIN Internationally renowned Iranian photo-journalist Majid Saeedi has spent more than ten years photographing in Afghanistan. His extraordinary record of everyday life there has won him prestigious international awards, including a World Press Photo Award and exhibitions around the globe. Now, for the first time, a collection of these remarkable photographs can be seen in Britain in an exhibition at the Creative Hinckley Gallery in Leicestershire. This moving and thought-provoking international exhibition has been organised by Charnwood Arts and takes place in the Atkins Mill Building in Hinckley from February 12th until March 18th. Majid Saeedi's work in Afghanistan was originally by assignment but, after being barred from working in Iran in 2009, he relocated to Kabul. His work, in contrast to many foreign photojournalists, is embedded in the lives of the people of Afghanistan. In a recent interview for Photo Evidence he said: “The most important thing for a photographer, I think, is to live with the people as they live. To experience life as the people experience it. I reached that in Afghanistan. I was living with the people.”

The director of UK based Charnwood Arts, Kevin Ryan, himself a photographer, met Majid Saeedi at a photo-festival they were both exhibiting at in Italy last summer. He became aware that Majid had never exhibited in the UK. Speaking on behalf of Charnwood Arts, Mr Ryan said: “I was surprised that a photographer of Majid’s standing had never been seen here and was determined at some point that we should rectify that. He is an emergent photographic master of his age but more than that, as a community arts organization we understand and share his concern for the people we work amongst. Charnwood Arts has worked with many young people who have arrived in the UK seeking asylum from Afghanistan and has supported the work of others who have helped them. On reaching 18 years old, many are allowed to stay but equally many are sent back to face uncertain futures. I hope this exhibition will give insight into the lives these young people have escaped from and that many are forced to return to. They are remarkable young people.”

"He leans against a car outside the hotel to smoke a last cigarette. His transport arrives and he departs for the airport. Minutes later the car he unwittingly leant against explodes, devastating the front of his hotel" In the words of Majid Saeedi: “People don’t expect to return home every time they go out. War is death. It is all around them but they go on living. This is a paradox. Life in War. They are in a paradox. Nobody should live in a war but they do.”

This unique exhibition can be seen at the Creative Hinckley Gallery in the Atkins Mill Building in Hinckley, Leicestershire from February 12th - March 18th. The official opening of the exhibition will take place on the 19th February from 6.00pm to 9.00pm.

NICKY MORGAN | AN UPDATE FROM YOUR LOCAL MP

Tel: 01509 262723 - Email: nicky.morgan.mp@parliament.uk As you will probably know we have, amongst many other things, a wonderful heritage tourist attraction in the Great Central Railway. Getting to know the staff and volunteers at the GCR, and understanding the positive effect of the GCR on our local economy led me to set up the All Party Parliamentary Group on Heritage Rail in Parliament. I was therefore delighted to join everyone last month to unveil the plaque they had been awarded as they came first in the station environment category in the National Railway Heritage Awards for the beautiful restoration of the canopy above the platforms at the Loughborough Central station. Following years of fundraising and painstaking work I was so pleased that everyone’s efforts had been recognised at a national level. If you have not visited the GCR for a while please do pop down and take a ride on the trains to Quorn, Rothley and Leicester. On the subject of heritage I was pleased to be asked to take part in a community consultation event on the subject of how Loughborough should mark the centenary of the First World War. With thanks to Loughborough resident, Bill Brookman, for

getting plans off the ground the event was held at our own historic parish church, All Saints with Holy Trinity. There are plans to move some of the monuments within the church but there is still plenty of time for residents to think about how to mark the centenary. At the event we heard about current plans including marking Loughborough’s own zeppelin raid as well as how to include many different people, such as those from the Commonwealth countries who fought alongside our troops. A heritage lottery fund bid has been submitted for the works in the church so watch this space! Lego assumed a whole new seriousness recently when I visited the First Lego League national final which was being held at Loughborough University. Many congratulations to Robert Bakewell Primary School who had a team in the national final and who did extremely well. Competition was fierce and it was clear that many, many hours had been spent practising for the event. The event was held in conjunction with the Institute of Engineering and Technology and as well as providing a serious competition it is to be hoped that at least some of those taking part will go

on to pursue careers in engineering as Britain really needs more engineers. I was particularly encouraged to see so many girls taking part and I really hope this leads them to careers in engineering. At the end of last month I chaired a highly productive meeting between the Loughborough BID team and Love Loughborough and landlords and agents from across the town. Although Loughborough does have a number of empty retail units we are slightly below the national average. The BID team are working exceptionally hard to make Loughborough an attractive destination for all sorts of visitors and it was really helpful to hear from the landlords and agents about what more we could all be doing and to hear just how much Loughborough has to offer retailers. Finally, I was very proud to see the Loughborough College School Links team collect their national Association of Colleges Beacon Award for their Bridge 2 Work Scheme in Westminster recently. The whole project is inspirational and I am honoured to be a part of it. Many congratulations to all involved on their hard work and dedication.

MP NICKY MORGAN MEETS LOUGHBOROUGH-BASED PARALYMPIC STAR ELLIE SIMMONDS AND ENCOURAGES LOCAL SCHOOLS, GROUPS & CLUBS TO SIGN-UP FOR INCLUSIVE PE TRAINING Loughborough MP Nicky Morgan is encouraging registered schools, groups and clubs to sign-up for inclusive PE training after attending the Parliamentary Launch of Active Kids for All at the House of Commons earlier on this month where she even got to meet Ambassador and Loughborough resident Ellie Simmonds. Ellie, who trains at Loughborough University and studies at Loughborough College, talked to Nicky about the Active Kids for All programme, which is an inclusive PE training programme to support teachers within schools across Loughborough to develop the skills and confidence to teach and include young disabled people in PE and school sport. The event was hosted by Sainsbury's in conjunction with the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS), which is based at Loughborough University's SportPark. After the event, Nicky commented: "It was great to see the Loughborough contingent out in force in Westminster and to see so many local friends including Ellie as well as representatives from the EFDS. Loughborough's Paralympians claimed six medals at the London 2012 Games, which is proof that the town is at the forefront of sporting excellence. I am certain that the Active Kids for All Scheme will ensure

8

that the sporting baton passes from one generation of Loughborough sporting greats to the next." As part of their 2012 Paralympic Games legacy, Sainsbury's developed Active Kids for All Inclusive PE training to give teachers the confidence and skills to provide high quality PE for all young people. Sainsbury's will be investing £1 million over four years in Active Kids For All training courses that will ensure over 500,000 young disabled children will lead healthier and more active lifestyles.Sainsbury's customers can now collect vouchers in-store and help registered schools, groups and clubs receive equipment and experiences.

the Department of Education, will also equip school children with the materials, ingredients and knowledge to learn the skills to lead healthier lives. Active Kids ambassador, Ellie Simmonds added: "Understanding the balance between food and nutrition is something I've been very aware of as a young athlete. So, I'm really excited that Active Kids 2014 will help children learn more skills to get cooking as well as getting active."

Earlier this month, Sainsbury's launched their 2014 Active Kids scheme, over 100 new cookery and nutrition toolkits have been added to the range of sports and cooking equipment on offer as part of the voucher exchange for schools, Scouts and Guide groups and clubs. This comes ahead of key changes to the national curriculum on cooking and healthy eating, where all pupils between the ages of seven and 14 are to be taught cookery from September. Meanwhile, Teacher resource toolkits, developed in collaboration with the British Nutritional Foundation and

pring is on its way and hopefully the rain will abate soon, giving us all a chance to get out into our gardens. My mission for the spring is to create new planting areas in my own garden and reinvigorate the tired borders in my client’s gardens. I took on my current garden a year ago when we bought an old house in need of renovation. It’s very traditional - long and narrow with a lawn, gravelled areas and a veg patch, flanked by neat Privet hedges. The formal layout is practical but it lacks style and is crying out for a vibrant injection of colour. Skinny little borders rarely offer enough space for a good range of plants, there fine if all you want is a lavender hedge but to create a dramatic planting scheme I recommend a minimum depth of 1.2m. They don’t have to be long & straight, curved island borders work well too. Mine will be contemporary geometric blocks to work with the existing layout of the paths. Whether I’m creating new borders or reinvigorating an existing one, I dig over the soil adding plenty of compost and fertiliser (such as Growmore) to loosen up the compacted ground, improve

drainage and feed the soil. It must be weed free too, otherwise within a season or two the border will be a tangled mess. A systemic weed killer (containing Glyphosate) can be used to kill persistent weeds like bind weed and brambles. In low maintenance gardens, I discourage future weed growth by laying membrane on the soil surface. A mulch of gravel or bark covers the unsightly membrane when complete. With the hard work done I’ll progress to the exciting bit – choosing the plants. Perennials and grasses are my passion. I’ve been collecting and growing unusual varieties for years. I’m always tempted by something when I visit a nursery and working as a professional grower, producing tens of thousands of plants each year, I’m constantly tempted to add to my collection! I’m not unique; many of us are seduced by plants that are looking at their best, generally in the spring and summer. The down side of this is that the garden can be devoid of colour for the other 6 months of the year! It can also create a very messy patchwork of colour and shape with lots of mismatched individual plants all muddled up together. Visiting

a garden centre or nursery regularly and purchasing a few at a time will help to build up a good year-round palette of plants. Whilst planting in blocks of 3-5 of the same plant will give a more cohesive and stylish look. So with that in mind, which plants to choose? Well to start off with, all borders need some structural planting to act as the backbone of the border. I do this by selecting key shrubs like Viburnum ‘Eve Price’, Choisya ‘White Dazzler’ or Box balls (see more examples below). These are evergreen so will look good even in the depths of winter. Once these are in I add the vibrant colour by Inter-planting with bulbs, perennials, flowering shrubs and ornamental grasses. You can find examples of planting schemes on at www.belgrierson.co.uk/inspiration If your garden is lacking colour and drama follow my lead and try refreshing an existing border or create a new one. Get the labour intensive work done on a sunny spring day then visit your local garden centre or nursery to select a few structural shrubs. Next month I’ll be looking at the perennials, shrubs and grasses you can add for spring & early summer colour.

What to Look out for in your local Nursery, Garden Centre & Florist in Feb/March For the structural plants look for shrubs like; Topiary Box Balls; Viburnum ‘Eve Price’ a low maintenance winter flowerer; Choisya; Hebes; Phormium; Escallonia or for acidic soils try Skimmia, Pieris, Rhododendrons & Azaleas. There are bright and cheery pots of spring bulbs, ideal for adding early season colour amongst the shrubs or in pots. Look for Narcissus, Muscari, Iris, Crocus and Tulips.

MARTIN & CO LOUGHBOROUGH & MOUNTSORREL AWARDED ‘BEST YOUNG BUSINESS’ Martin & Co Loughborough and Mountsorrel are celebrating after scooping the award for ‘Best Young Business’ at Martin & Co’s Annual Conference last Saturday [1st]. The awards ceremony, held at the prestigious Whittlebury Hall hotel near Silverstone celebrated the success of Martin & Co offices, after an exceptional year of business for the brand. The award, presented by Chief Executive, Ian Wilson, celebrates the passion for results, and 23 year old franchise director Mitul Gadhia and his team demonstrate just that. Although operating with two branches, Loughborough and Mountsorrel share the same territory, meaning that both offices were crowned with the award. Since opening the Loughborough office in 2012 and the Mountsorrel office in 2013, Mitul and his team have achieved exceptional results in

developing both offices year on year. Accepting the award, Mitul said: “This award is a real honour and is a tribute to all of the hard work, passion and dedication the team have displayed. This is only the beginning for us, and we have exciting plans to continue our success.”

The conference gave Martin & Co the chance to celebrate and reflect on a busy year, since listing on the AIM, launching a new super fast website and implementing a multi-million

pound sales service, the business has been going from strength to strength, and with exciting plans for 2014, there is plenty on the horizon for Martin & Co.

Chief Executive, Ian Wilson commented: “Mitul instantly embraced everything that Martin & Co stands for. All of his hard work and ambition has resulted in two thriving and successful businesses and this award is a testament to that. I have been really impressed by feedback from clients about the level of service both offices provide, and it is clear that there is plenty more to come from Mitul and his team.” Mitul added: “Choosing the right agent is of paramount importance, and success such as this provides a boost of confidence to both existing and prospective clients.”

EAST MIDLANDS COMMUNITY URGED TO SUPPORT EAST MIDLANDS’ ONLY CHILDREN’S HOSPICE’S BIRTHDAY The East Midlands’ only children’s hospice is celebrating 20 years of care this year and is calling on people in the area to help celebrate the milestone. Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People first opened its doors in 1994 and over the years, staff and volunteers have supported thousands of children, young people and family members. To commemorate its birthday, the charity wants to raise an extra £100,000 over the year to help fund more children’s nurses at the Loughborough-based hospice. Rainbows was founded by Gail and Harry Moore, whose daughter, Laura, died of Leukaemia in 1989. Laura's favourite thing in the world was a rainbow. The hospice was officially opened in April 1995 by HRH Prince of Wales and in 2009, a £4m extension was built to create a new therapy wing and separate facilities for young people.

Mr Moore said: “It was 22 years ago that Gail and I stood in a field outside Loughborough overlooking the Charnwood Forest. This would be an ideal place to build the children’s hospice we said to each other. Three years previously, we had lost our five-year old daughter Laura to Leukaemia after three years of treatment, including a bone marrow transplant from her twin brother Kit. The journey along the way has not always been easy. It has involved a lot of hard work from a lot of people to develop it into what it is today. After 20 years, Rainbows continues to realise its dream with wonderful facilities and palliative care programmes that have been instrumental in both extending the lives of our children, and improving their quality of life. Over and above everything however, its success is down to its people and the quality of care they provide to ensure that our children get the best support possible throughout their all too short journey of life.”

Rainbows currently cares for 288 children and young people with life-limiting and terminal illnesses as well as supporting 249 bereaved families and 521 siblings. Through its outreach efforts into East Midlands paediatric oncology units, Rainbows is also caring for a growing number of the region’s children with cancer. People can help to support Rainbows by joining in with 20th birthday celebrations which include the Rainbows Great Cake Bake; a “do 20 good deeds” schools’ challenge and business challenge. There will also be a birthday party for the children and their families, a ball and themed 20th events. Geoff Ellis, chief executive of Rainbows, added: “Rainbows is continually developing and is now a hospice that is nationally and internationally recognised. But none of this would have been possible without the amazing help that Rainbows has received from our supporters in the East Midlands over the last 20 years. Turning 20 is a very special time for us and we have devised many ways that you can help to raise funds to support the hospice this year. Please do get involved, have some fun and be a part of your local children and young people’s hospice by joining in our celebrations. You really will be helping us to make a difference.” To find out more, visit: www.rainbows.co.uk/birthday

TWO FASCINATING COUNTRIES - ONE AWESOME CHARITY CHALLENGE! most fascinating wonders of the world! Built from 879 – 1191AD by the Khmer civilisation, Ankgor Wat represents one of mankind’s most astonishing architectural achievements and is certainly the jewel in Cambodia’s crown.

The cycle ride is 400km over 10 days (15-25 Nov 2014) and we are to cycle from Vietnam to Cambodia! The ride will take us from Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) to the ancient temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Upon arrival, we’ll have time to explore the fascinating city of Saigon – the heart of Vietnam – before we commence with our charity challenge. Our 400km charity cycle route will take us through many traditional Vietnamese villages, following gorgeous streams and rivers, passing paddy fields and adjacent to stunning mountains. We then cross the border into Cambodia and push on to the world famous temple site of Angkor Wat – arguably one of

We have decided to take on the challenge in aid of Loros. It's the only way we felt we could give something back to a charity that helps such a wide range of illnesses. Not only is it close to both our hearts but we realised that everyone has come across the amazing local work that this charity has done at one point or another in their lives. Both my Auntie and I are doing the charity ride together and after loosing my uncle (Lorraine's husband) to cancer as well as other family members and friends we felt that as an Auntie and a Niece duo we should attempt to conquer the world - well the next best thing - cycle the 400km route from Vietnam to Cambodia!! Lorraine had the idea as she is celebrating her 55th birthday and I thought at 26 I'd better go and look after her! LOROS charges no fees for its services, which are available to all local people based upon

medical need regardless of their ethnicity or faith. The charity relies upon the generosity and support of local people, organisations and business, which enables them to raise the £4.5million needed each year to provide their valued services to patients and their families. Their services include a 31-bed hospice, outpatient services, day therapy and a team of nurses in the community. 90% of the money donated to LOROS goes directly towards patient care.

We have since met with the fundraising team at Loros and realised the extent of the amazing work they carry out! 1ST ANNUAL LOUGHBOROUGH WHEELCHAIR TENNIS OPEN The weekend of the 8th/9th February saw 16 wheelchair tennis players from around the country descend on Loughborough's Dan Maskell Tennis Centre for the first annual Loughborough Wheelchair Tennis Open. Of the 16, who travelled from as far away as London and Scotland to enter, it was particularly pleasing that there were four local players in the draw, Mark Esho of Burton on the Wolds, Idris Popat of Leicester, James Shaw of Ruddington and Rob Ghahremani of Nottingham. Most players arrived in Loughborough on Friday where they took part in a 2 hour pretournament training camp and then 4 match courts were in action throughout from 9am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday. The standard was high with former World Top 100 ranked player John Lambert picking up the singles title with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Keith Thom, and the doubles title with partner Scott Smith winning 6-2, 6-0 against Rob Ghahremani and Craig Nicholson. Local player Mark Escho partnered Lynn Broughton to win the B Draw Doubles and Gordon Wild won the B Draw Singles. But

match of the weekend was arguably the consolation doubles final though, in which local players Shaw and Popat narrowly missing out to Francis and Pegram 7-5, 6-7, 10-7 in front of a packed balcony. Former Loughborough LTC player and two time tennis Paralympian Dave Phillipson also dropped in on Sunday to present the trophies to the winners and runners up. The event was run by local organisation Inside Out Tennis, with Loughborough’s Martyn Whait as tournament organiser and Patrick Smith as tournament referee. The event was also supported by Inside Out Tennis’s coaching team and families, and the ball boys and girls, Emma Case, Maddie Glass, Matt McNamee, Thomas Campsall, Murray Leishman, Toby Shanks, Matthew Salmon and Louis Marsden were from Loughborough LTC. Additional support for the event came from the Tennis Foundation, Tennis Leicestershire, Loughborough's Cooking Made Simple, who helped feed the players after Friday’s training camp, and The T-Shirt Factory, who kitted out the tournament team and ball kids.

If you’d like to know more about wheelchair tennis coaching or anything else tennis related, visit www.insideouttennis.com and contact the team.

VIEWS SHARED ON LOUGHBOROUGH TRAFFIC OPTIONS More than 1,300 people have shared their views on traffic options for Loughborough. Leicestershire County Council is analysing responses following six weeks of consultation on its options for traffic management in Market Street and Swan Street, following completion of the inner relief road. The relief road will divert through-traffic away from the A6 Market Place (Market Street and Swan Street), in the town centre. The consultation asked for people's views on three different options for a trial traffic management scheme for the town centre, following completion of the inner relief road Headline results show that: * Option A (continuing to allow buses two-way access through the A6 Market Place -

as present): 501 (38.2%) would support this, 463 (35.3%) said this was their preferred option. * Option B (allowing buses to travel in one direction only southbound - through the A6 Market Place): 139 (10.6%) would support this, 35 (2.7%) said this was their preferred option. * Option C (excluding buses from the area completely) 754 (57.5%) would support this, 715 (54.5%) said this was their preferred option. * None of the above: 58 (4.4%) * Don't know: 5 (0.4%) Peter Osborne, Leicestershire County Council Cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "We have had lots of feedback and we would like to thank so many people for taking part and taking the time to share their views.

"Officers are now going through the detail in all the responses and will make their recommendations in a report, which will be presented to and considered by members before any final decision is made." The report is due to be presented to the council's Environment and Transport Overview and Scrutiny Committee on March 20 before being presented to Cabinet, which will make the final decision on whether or not to hold a trial and, if so, what form it would take on April 1. Members will need to consider the evidence and advantages and disadvantages of the options together with the results of the consultation before making a decision. Any trial is likely to start in the autumn following completion of the town centre engineering works.

Will said: “I have done fundraising challenges in the past including half-marathons but The Three Peaks is considered a real challenge by many able-bodied fundraisers. By attempting it in a wheelchair this will hopefully inspire other disabled people and able-bodied people to push themselves and show that anything is possible.”

NORTH WEST LEICESTERSHIRE DISTRICT COUNCIL PRAISED AT BUSINESS EVENT North West Leicestershire District Council's Business Focus team has been singled out by a local company for the advice and support it has provided to help them grow in the region. Leicestershire-based outdoor activity company, Field Sport UK, recently attended the third annual Love Business East Midlands 2014 networking event hosted by Donington Park Race circuit, and were very impressed at the support and advice that the event provided. The event, which is the biggest business to business event of its kind in the region, was attended by 1993 delegates throughout the day, and provided a great opportunity for businesses to come together, make contacts, showcase good news stories and celebrate

Will is taking on the challenge to raise money and awareness of the Jessica Hope Foundation which was set up in 2013 after the death of 16-year-old Jessica from an aggressive form of brain cancer, Anaplastic Astrocytoma. Will added: “Jess was an extremely close family friend oto see a 16-year-old girl suffer and ultimately lose her battle has affected everyone who was close to her greatly. As a result, I wanted to set myself a challenge to raise money for an incredibly important cause. Jess was an inspirational young woman and by doing this challenge I want to spread the message that a disability or illness should not prevent you from doing the things you love and enjoy.”

how supportive the region is for business. The Business Focus team represent the District Council on the project and are one of the organising partners. They have been involved since the event's inception three years ago, bringing high profile businesses to the table and encouraging local companies to attend the event through their champion's network. Kelly Wheeler from Field Sport UK: "The Love Business event was great and we gained some valuable contacts for our business. The Business Focus Team at North West Leicestershire District Council, and Tourist Co-ordinator offered us some great advice and support." Councillor Tony Gillard, Portfolio Holder for Business: "Considering the weather, this was a fantastic turn out for the third year of the Love Business event. It's definitely one of the highlights in the region's business calendar, and a great opportunity for businesses to come together and network. The feedback from Field Sport UK shows just how important the service is to businesses in the area."
