OPEN BOX PROMOTIONS LAUNCHED IT’S 7TH COMMUNITY MAGAZINE IN LOUGHBOROUGH

On the 29th November Open Box Promotions Ltd launched its 7th community magazine! Joining our magazine group and furthering our reach to another 7000 homes, the Loughborough Eye rolled of the press. Open Box promotions now deliver community magazines to 7 areas distributing to over 43,000 homes. The Loughborough Eye magazine is designed to give community information and updates, local event information and local news items directly to residents. The magazines are funded through advertising revenue enabling us to keep it as a free monthly magazine. Our advertising rates are extremely competitive and all our magazines are available to view online at www.openboxpromotions.co.uk Our launch party at John Storer House was well attended by current contributors and advertisers but it was also nice to meet up with new businesses looking to advertise and also local council representatives who came along to show their support. The refreshments came courtesy of Costco and Norwood Press were also there showcasing their corporate stationary products and their range of personalised gift items. We are looking forward to meeting more local advertisers, so please give us a call on 0800 6446 150 if you would like to arrange a meeting with Miriam to discuss advertising rates. We would also like to encourage local schools and community groups to put us on your press release mailing list and we will send people to cover events if possible. Email us at info@communityeye.net

THE AIR AMBULANCE SERVICE

SAVING LIVES & SPREADING JOYTHIS CHRISTMAS

W

hilst the wind is cold, and the frost is biting, this Christmas your Air Ambulance crew is ready, and our helicopters flying! At this special time of year, there is nothing so important as spending precious time with your family and friends. Be they mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, old time friends or next door neighbours, this Christmas we’re celebrating “our community”. It’s thanks to the generous communities of Warwickshire, Northamptonshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland, that our helicopters are able to keep saving lives. Throughout the Christmas period, our pilots, paramedics and doctors will be ready to fly through the skies ( like Santa some may say!) To those who need us. Businesses in the three counties are being encouraged to take up The Big £50 Business Challenge, in which they will each be given £50 and invest it to try and raise as much money as possible for the Charity. Open Box promotions have signed up for this amazing opportunity! To support us to raise funds for DLR Air Ambulance please donate on our just giving page: www.justgiving.com/OpenBoxPromotions or just text OPEN64 and the amount you wish to donate (eg OPEN64 £3) to 70070 We will be carrying out some fundraising events in January and February too so keep your eyes on our website!

NICKY MORGAN | AN UPDATE FROM YOUR LOCAL MP Tel: 01509 262723 - Email: nicky.morgan.mp@parliament.uk I expect that, by the time you read this, we will be at least a few days into 2014. I hope that you and your loved ones had a peaceful and enjoyable Christmas. I certainly enjoyed visiting the many Christmas events, including Christmas Tree Festivals organised across the Loughborough area. It was a particular privilege to be on stage as the Loughborough Christmas lights were switched on. What an amazing sight to look out at Loughborough’s packed market place and see so many thousands of people. Thank you to everyone who supported the switch on. Thank you also to everyone who supported the UK’s first Small Business Saturday. Loughborough certainly seemed busy on Saturday 7th December and this was a fabulous opportunity to show support for our small retailers, cafes and market traders. Love Loughborough and the Loughborough BID did a great job in promoting our town centre this year and

I know they will continue to be working very hard to make Loughborough a great destination throughout 2014. If you don’t yet have your Love Loughborough Loyalty Card you can sign up here: www.loveloughborough.co.uk/loyalty-card Did you make any New Year’s resolutions? Perhaps one of them was to do more sport and exercise? There are many ways you can do this but I’d like to suggest two. Firstly I am a keen runner and, just sometimes, you might be able to spot me on a run around Loughborough. If the thought of running seems a bit daunting, then how about joining a friendly running group organised by Run England? Why not find out more here: www.lrsport.org/sports/running If a team sport is more your kind of activity then how about supporting your local sports club. Just before Christmas I was invited to watch a game by Loughborough Dynamo FC. On a blustery afternoon they drew 1-1 against Romulus FC. It was an excellent afternoon and I was made to feel

CALL FOR ACTION ON BUSINESS RATES BY LOUGHBOROUGH BUSINESSES LISTENED TO BY GOVERNMENT A recent call by members of the Loughborough BID and other local businesses for the Government to take action on business rates has been taken on board by the Chancellor the Exchequer in his Autumn Statement. Speaking in the House of Commons earlier today the Chancellor of the Exchequer announced the following business rates package worth £1.13 Billion - aimed particularly at helping retailers. · Business Rates will be capped at 2% (Down from planned 3.2%) (14/15 cost - £270 million) · Small Business Rate Relief will be extended for another year, helping 540,000 businesses. (14/15 cost - £500 million) · Businesses will be allowed to pay their rates in 12 monthly instalments

very welcome. We have lots of fantastic sports clubs in Loughborough many of whom would welcome volunteer helpers as well as players. In November I was delighted to help to reopen Loughborough’s main post office after its revamp. I was also pleased to welcome the Bangladeshi High Commissioner in the UK, Mr M Quayes, to Loughborough to meet members of the Bangladeshi community at King Street mosque. Finally I have visited lots of schools recently, which I love doing. This was partly to talk about Parliament as part of the National Parliament Week, but also a chance to hear from pupils and staff about their school and achievements – thank you to everyone at the Beacon Academy, Sacred Heart, and Loughborough CofE Primary Schools who made me so welcome. I also spoke about Parliament and my work as an MP to the sixth form politics classes at Loughborough Grammar School and Loughborough High School and to the Agrani Women’s Group who meet each week at the Moira Centre in Loughborough.

on action the Government could take to help local retailers and town centre businesses with business rates. Mrs Morgan, who is also Economic Secretary to the Treasury, took the BID’s demands into a meeting with the Chancellor. In particular one of the suggestions, put forward by the BID, was to allow businesses to pay their rates over 12 months rather than 10 - something the Chancellor announced today. Speaking after the Autumn Statement Nicky Morgan said,“I meet Roger Perrett and other members of the Loughborough BID regularly and recently held a breakfast meeting with local businesses on the future of our High Streets. I took their ideas directly to the Chancellor and I am very pleased that the Government has been able to announce a package of measures which will make a real difference to local businesses now. Ahead of Small Business Saturday and on top of the forthcoming £2000 national insurance contributions exemption for businesses of all sizes I think this shows just how committed I am as Loughborough’s MP, and this Government is, to supporting our high streets and retailers.”

· Clear pledge to clear backlog of valuation appeals in time for revaluation

• PC, Laptop and Tablet repairs.

· A new £1,000 discount for businesses with a rateable value up to £50,000 (for 2 years) (14/15 cost - £350 million)

• Networking, Wireless and Security.

· Creation of a Reoccupation Relief that will give a 50% relief on business rates for new occupants of retail premises that have been empty for 18 months (14/15 cost - £5 million)

• Troubleshooting and Maintenance.

· Changing single property criteria to encourage growth. This will allow small businesses to retain Small Business Rate Relief for a year if they take on an additional property that pushes them over the current threshold. (14/15 - £5 million) visit: www.gov.uk/government/topical-events/autumn-statement-2013 The Chairman of the Loughborough BID, recently wrote to Loughborough’s MP, Nicky Morgan, setting out his thoughts

CINEMA AND LEISURE COMPLEX SET FOR LOUGHBOROUGH TOWN CENTRE The old Baxter Gate Hospital site is set to become a brand new multimillion pound cinema and leisure complex. The site has been sold to developer Citygrove which wants to build an eight-screen multiplex cinema complex complete with up to seven family restaurants. Charnwood Borough Council has worked closely with the developer to ensure the development, which will create around 180 jobs, meets the highest design and environmental quality. It will also boost Loughborough’s profile as a top destination for shopping and leisure. The Citygrove development was approved by the Council’s Plans Committee on December 5, 2013. Councillor David Slater, Leader of Charnwood Borough Council, said: “Naturally, we are delighted to be able to welcome Citygrove to the Baxter Gate site.“We know how much Loughborough and Charnwood have to offer and I’m delighted that a major developer, such as Citygrove, has also seen that potential. I think it is fair to say the Baxter Gate site is overdue some tender loving care, and this complex will deliver that as well as giving the town a major economic shot in the arm.” “We’ve been working on improving and regenerating the town centre for a number of years and national companies are now recognising that Loughborough is the place they want to be.”Steve Wiener, CEO of Cineworld: “I am very pleased that Cineworld will be able to provide a new modern cinema for the residents of Loughborough and the surrounding area. We take great pride in always trying to deliver the best movie experience for all members of the community.” Peter Atkinson, Senior Acquisition Manager, Nandos, said: “Nandos is pleased to be part of this exciting family-orientated leisure scheme along with all of the other tenants who have committed to the redevelopment of Baxter Gate and we look forward to the opening of our restaurant within the development.” Oliver de Chalus, Development Director for Citygrove, said: “Operators who have now committed to the scheme include Cineworld for an eight-screen state of the art multiplex cinema, Pizza Express, Nandos, Loungers Café Bars, Starbucks, Dean’s Diner and Mimosa. We look forward to commencing construction works late summer next year.”

LOUGHBOROUGH HALF MARATHON 2014

LITTER? IT’S BEHIND YOU…

Loughborough half marathon is again returning on Sunday 23rd March 2014 put this date in your diary. Local charity Living Without Abuse www.lwa.org.uk organisers of this great event are very proud of this event as it has raised a substantial amount for the charity allowing them to work closely with people in Leicestershire in improving their lives – making a massive difference to adults and families. Event organiser Michele Walker said “this event is a fantastic event for our charity – without the support of entrants in the Loughborough Half Marathon we wouldn’t be able to sustain all of the services we currently offer”

A PANTO villain has been fined for dropping litter after being caught red-handed by a local eco-hero in Charnwood. Cesspit, evil star of Loughborough Town Hall’s Christmas Panto Jack and the Beanstalk, was collared by The Recycler, Charnwood Borough Council’s very own green champion, and handed an £80 Fixed Penalty Notice by a street warden.

The Loughborough Half Marathon is proud to have the following companies to date who are sponsoring this event. Cambourne Financial Planning – an independent financial advisor offering impartial financial solution to individual and corporate clients. Nicholas Humphreys Estate Agents - At the end of 2012, Nicholas Humphreys letting and estate agents won a prestigious national award in recognition of its achievements in the lettings market. Newby Castleman - As experienced accountants, we understand the importance of good business and financial management. From starting and developing a business, to maximising your personal finances. Again event organiser Michele Walker said “Living Without Abuse and I are really pleased to have our sponsors – without their support we would really struggle to hold this event. I am really pleased that all of our sponsors are themselves runners and hope to be taking part on the day” ROUTE: The route that starts and finishes in the town before taking in the sights of Loughborough University, the stunning private Garendon Park Estate grounds, Shepshed and Hathern. The course is undulating and can be a challenge. So come on take a look and enter now: www.loughboroughalf.co.uk

He was ‘collared’ during a staged offence in Loughborough as part of the Council’s Don’t Muck Around campaign which is targeting litter louts during December. Since September, officers have been forced to issue 22 Fixed Penalty Notices for litter which costs every household an average of £33 to clear each year. Cesspit, speaking from a tower where he was locked away after dropping a burger carton in Loughborough town centre, said: “My crime was a whopper and I don’t relish my punishment. I’m really in a pickle now.” He was caught red-handed by Charnwood’s very own eco-hero, The Recycler. He said: “I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw this villainous character dropping litter. Everyone should know that if you are caught you can be fined £80 for being a litter lout. Don’t end up like Cesspit.” Councillor Jane Hunt, Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Regulatory Services, said: “I know we had a bit of fun with this particular litter lout, but it is no laughing matter. “Not only does litter have an impact on our streets and parks, it also costs an average of £33 per household to clear rubbish every year. The Don’t Muck Around campaign aims to raise awareness that you can be fined £80 for dropping waste so it is just not worth it.” To report any environmental offence, including litter, dog fouling or fly-tipping, email cleaner.greener@charnwood.gov.uk or call 01509 634563. You can catch Cesspit and friends in Jack and the Beanstalk at Loughborough Town Hall until January 5, 2014. Tickets cost £11£15 depending on performance. WORK ON MAJOR JUNCTION COMPLETES

SWITCH ON SUCCESS!

Improvements to a key junction in Loughborough are due to be completed in time for Christmas. Leicestershire County Council has been carrying out work to the Bridge Street / Derby Road (including Broad Street) junction.

Record numbers turned out to see the official launch of Christmas in Loughborough last week. The Christmas Light Switch On, organised by Charnwood Borough Council in partnership with Love Loughborough, saw Gem 106 stars Sam and Amy join a colourful cast of characters on stage on Sunday, December 1.

Improvements have included carriageway widening, the installation of new traffic signals and pedestrian crossings. The work is part of a wider multi-million pound project to divert traffic away from the heart of Loughborough and boost pedestrian access in the town centre. On Wednesday (December 18) the new permanent traffic lights are set to be switched on. Final clearance work, which should not affect traffic flow, is due to be completed by the end of the week. Peter Osborne, Leicestershire County Council Cabinet Member for highways and transport, said: “We are pleased to complete one of the key pieces of work being carried out as part of the scheme.” “We appreciate that there has been some disruption while the work has been carried out and we would like to thank motorists and residents for bearing with us. In the long term this scheme should bring great benefits, enabling pedestrian access in the town centre to be boosted, bringing it together.” The construction of the relief road is on schedule and is due to be completed in the spring. Anyone with questions / comments about the building of the relief road can attend weekly drop-in sessions which are held on Wednesdays between 11am and 1pm at the site office in Barrow Street. For more on the scheme visit: www.leics.gov.uk/loughborough_town_centre_transport_proposals

Lez Cope-Newman, Vice Chair of BID Loughborough said: “We had a fantastic day, the weather and audience were great and it was superb seeing so many people take the effort to support our town and businesses. We saw a record amount of visitors, on the day, around 14,000 people – 5% up on last year.” Businesses also benefited from the event with some shops reporting up to 20% increase on their trade compared to last year. Roger Perrett, Chair of the Love Loughborough Partnership said: “It is great to see such overwhelming support from the public and we hope people continue to visit the town leading up to Christmas. As well as great bus travel offers in our Love Loughborough Christmas Brochure, there is also free Sunday parking across the town. “Our local traders need the support of the public more than ever this year, Christmas is a crucial trading period and we hope that people will visit some of our great shops, bars and restaurants whilst enjoying the Christmas entertainment.” Councillor Paul Harley, Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure & Culture, said: “The Lights Switch On was a brilliant event and the fact that the offer helped attract more people than ever before doesn’t surprise me. “Every year, the event gets bigger and better and I’m absolutely delighted to see that businesses saw a boost in trade. This isn’t by accident. A lot of work goes into promoting the town and providing good entertainment and we hope to continue this excellent work into the new year.” Information on the Christmas programme, offers and travel information can be found at www.loveloughborough.co.uk

CARILLON TOWER & WAR MEMORIAL MUSEUM NEWS GET IN TOUCH 01509 263370 - CARILLONMUSEUM@GMAIL.COM REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY

WAR MEMORIALS ONLINE The website, War Memorials Online provides an opportunity for the public to upload images of war memorials. With the public’s help a complete picture of the whereabouts; type and condition of all war memorials in the UK can be recorded.

The Civic Party led by the Charnwood’s Mace Bearer approach the carillon. It seems that each Remembrance Sunday Service and parade is better attended than the previous one. It is estimated that some 5000 people attended this year’s service. We will soon need a bigger park. It is amazing just how many young people are in a uniformed organization. The Reverend Rachael Ross made a very moving contribution to the service when she read from a letter sent by Pte William Godber (his mother laid one of the foundation stones of the Carillon Tower) to his sweetheart, Maude. William was killed in France on 16 April 1971, aged just 21. For the first time, we opened the tower and museum to the public after the service and it proved a great success and we will, providing we have the volunteers, open again next year.

ROYAL LEICESTERSHIRE MEMORIAL APPEAL In last months edition there was a piece about the launch of an appeal for a memorial to the Royal Leicestershire Regiment to be sited at the National Arboretum at Alrewas. In just one month over £17,000 as been collected towards the £40.000 needed. You can now donate online. Just click on: The Royal Leicestershire Regiment - The Tigers - JustGiving

ALKEMADE THE MAN WHO SURVIVED The amazing story of Flt Sgt Nickolas Alkemade, the man who jumped from a burning aircraft from 18,000 feet and survived was fairly well known but the Loughborough Echo have revealed a further chapter to the story when they published his diary. Nickolas Alkamade not only recorded the details of his time as a POW but illustrated the diary with some great sketches. This is a must. Read more.. Great Escape camp diary comes to light

It is a very simple site to use, type in ‘Loughborough’ and the only memorial recorded within the tower is the list of names of the victims of the Zeppelin raid when I believe we have at least 3 more memorials that started life elsewhere. To access the site. Click on: War Memorials Online lets us add all the memorials in Loughborough including Charles Fredrick Ball (Who’s he? I hear you ask

MYSTERY GUEST The carillon was used as the location for the ‘Mystery Guest’ slot for the popular television programme, ‘Question of Sport.’ The BBC crew filmed on the balcony, in the Yeomanry Room and spent some time with Caroline in the clavier Room, I think we will probably see the mystery guest give us a tune on the bells. The gentleman from the BBC said he will let us know when the programme is to be shown. If they do I will let you know. The mystery guest? Sorry we had to sign the Official Secrets Act.

HUMOUR IN UNIFORM Two reluctant potential National Service recruits were awaiting their medical examination. The first one went into the doctor’s office and came out grinning, “rejected, Medically Exempt” he chuckled and dropped his pants to reveal he was wearing a hernia truss. Here gimme that” the second man said, grabbing the truss and quickly putting it on before he to went into see the doctor. At the end of the examination the doctor asked the man how long he had been wearing the truss, “two years” said the man. “M E” said the doctor, as he completed the paperwork. “Medically Exempt” cried the man. “No, Middle East, if you’ve been wearing that truss upside down for two years you can certainly ride a camel.”

WHAT’S NEW? A Leicestershire Regiment WW2 ‘Economy’ plastic cap badge was amongst a number of items and documents donated by Traditionally military cap badges were made of brass an economy badge had been issued in WW1 and in WW2 because brass was needed elsewhere these plastic ones were introduced. More than 24,000 Leicestershire Regiment badges were manufactured, What they did with them all is a mystery. They were unpopular and the services went back to brass after the war. However in the late 50s and early 60s a ‘Staybright’ badge was introduced. Made of anodised aluminium, they were cheap to produce and did not need polishing which suited the ethos of the day, we were moving from a National Service army to an all regular force and moving away from the perceived pointless ‘Bull’ that characterised the National Service army.

ADVERTISING DOES WORK! In last months edition I appealed for a volunteer to look after our shop sales and stock control. We have been extremely poor in exploiting this valuable source of revenue for the museum. A gentleman who read the version of the Carillon chimes in the Loughborough Community Eye responded and we will be meeting up soon with the prospect of him taking on the task.

STOP PRESS

Just got back and this photograph was waiting for me from Peter Minshell. It shows our stall at the Christmas Market held in Loughborough Market Place before the Christmas lights are switched on.

Two beautiful framed embroideries have been donated by Mrs Cahill of Leicester. The first is the Regimental crest of the Royal Leicestershire Regiment and the second poppies with the text: At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them. These are both very fine examples and we are so pleased to have acquired them.

2014 CALENDAR NOW ON SALE QUEEN’S Park and the Carillon has formed the inspiration for this year’s calendar printed by a Loughborough publisher. Panda Eyes Publishers Ltd and Dovecote Ltd, which choose a different theme for the popular calendars each year, decided the 2014 should prove a fitting tribute in preparation for the centenary of the outbreak of World War One, which will be marked next year. As well as featuring photographs taken by local photographer Paul Blackwell, the calendar features paintings by Diana Brass, chair of the Friends of Queen’s Park, and old photographs loaned to the publishers by local resident Alan Street. It is available in A3 for £9.99 from Waterstones and in A4 for £7.99 from Tylers, and Charnwood Museum with ££11 from each sale going to the Loughborough Carillon Tower and War Memorial Museum.. Ian Porter, of Panda Eyes, said: “We have focused on Queen’s Park really because of the 100-year anniversary coming up and because Queen’s Park means a lot to local people.”

Our main effort was to sell our Christmas cards but I can report that we do have a few left. There are 3 different snow scene views of the carillon. If you want any for yourself or to re-sell or you know of anywhere they could be sold then please contact me. 3 cards for a £1.00

FINAL WORD I do hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year. I am still looking for ‘Jiffy’ bags, particularly A4 size. In reasonable condition for re-use. Will collect. Email me: carillonmuseum@gmail.com I always welcome contributions. (In fact I am desperate) If you have anything you would like to have included then send it to: carillonmuseum@gmail.com Don’t forget! Visit us at: www.loughborough-rollofhonour.com

A PRECIOUS GIFT FOR TWYCROSS ZOO - A BABY ORANG UTAN IS BORN! Twycross Zoo is extremely pleased to announce the birth of an endangered orang utan! Born in the early hours of the morning on Thursday 28th November 2013, the Zoo is thrilled to report the newborn ape is happy, healthy and doing very well. The new arrival is 36-year old Kibriah’s fourth offspring and yet another vital addition to the European Breeding Programme (EEP) of this endangered great ape. Head of Life Sciences, Dr Charlotte Macdonald, said: “When keepers arrived in the morning they were delighted to find Kibriah had given birth overnight. “Although Kibriah isn’t a first time mum, this is her first baby in 12 years so we’re all very pleased with how well she’s doing. She’s very confident and relaxed with the infant, and enjoying plenty of rest! At the moment Dad (Batu aged 24) hasn’t met the new arrival but it won’t be long before they’re introduced. Batu is a great father to Molly, our three year old orang utan, so we expect the meeting to go very smoothly.” Female orang utans generally give birth to a single infant after a gestation period of approximately eight and a half months. Female Bornean orang utans reach maturity between 10 and 15 years old and reproduce every six to eight years on average.

A MA-RVELLOUS OPPORTUNITY! BUDGET health checks are being offered to Charnwood residents who are worried about making ends meet. Charnwood Borough Council has teamed up with the Money Advice Service (MA) to offer advice on making money stretch further. Appointments will be strictly private and held every other Thursday, from December 12, 2013, between 9am and 5pm at the Council offices, Southfield Road, Loughborough. There will not be a session on December 26, 2013, or January 2, 2014, but they will begin again on January 9, 2014. The sessions are open to anyone but with a particular focus on tenants with rent arrears and those on benefits. Cllr Jenny Bokor, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Revenues, Benefits and Customer Services, said: “Money worries can be a big problem for many people, especially at this time of year, and this is a great opportunity to get help and advice. “The sessions will help people to take steps to get out of debt, to claim any benefits they’re entitled to and to reduce the worry that comes with debt.” Anyone who wishes to make an appointment can call on 01509 634666.

Great Ape Team Leader, Simon Child’s, added: “We’re all very proud. Kibriah is a very loving mum and she’s doing such a great job. She is holding the baby very close so we won’t know if it’s a boy or a girl just yet. When we find out the sex, we can then start to think of a name for him or her. At this stage we don’t mind what sex it is, we’re just happy to have another healthy infant.” “Molly is already a firm favourite with our visitors so we expect Kibriah’s newest arrival will too become very popular with visitors, and in time become a playmate for Molly.” The safe arrival of a baby orang utan has been cause for huge celebration amongst keepers and staff, making this the third species of endangered great ape born at the Zoo within 12 months. Lope, a baby gorilla born on 3rd January, and Mokonzi, a baby bonobo born on 19th February, are both thriving. Dr Charlotte Macdonald went on to say: “The Bornean orang utan is classified as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Redlist (IUCN), with fewer than 50,000 individuals remaining in the wild. As they only give birth on average once every eight years their numbers are dwindling fast as a result of the extreme rate at which forest habitat in Indonesia is being destroyed by deforestation. Experts now agree that orang utans are likely to be extinct in the wild within the next 20 years, so successful breeding is imperative if this ape is to continue to exist on this planet in the future.” Orang utans face an uncertain future from the deforestation of their natural habitat from the growth of palm oil plantations in response to global demand for palm oil, the most important tropical vegetable oil in the global oils and fats industry. Within Indonesia, oil palm production expanded from 600,000 hectares in 1985 to over 6 million hectares by 2007. The newborn is now on view to the public in the zoo’s orang utan house and on Youtube.

SCHOOL HALLS DECKED WITH TURKEY AND TRIMMINGS School cooks certainly have a lot on their plates this festive season, nearly 40,000 Christmas lunches. Throughout December, a staggering 38,000 traditional turkey platters are being served to children at over 220 schools by Leicestershire County Council. Featuring, turkey, chipolatas, stuffing, brussel sprouts and plum pudding, the ingredients list is enough to make any seasoned chef’s eyes water and includes: • 2,660 kg roast turkey breast - that’s 84,488 slices • 2,431 kg pork chipolatas • 476 kg bacon

• 422 kg savoury stuffing • 5,822 kg potatoes • 1,509 kg peas

• 1,509 kg carrots

• 674 kg brussel sprouts

• 3,807 litres vanilla sauce

• 21,122 portions of plum pudding

• 10,561 portions of yuletide brownie Byron Rhodes, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for school food, said: “Serving nearly 40,000 dishes this Christmas is no mean feat and has helped to spread festive cheer to our young people. “Every day, we serve healthy, nutritious and appetising meals, made from scratch, and I hope that this one-off Christmas menu encourages more young people to make the switch from pack-ups.”

OSTEOARTHRITIS OF THE KNEE Osteoarthritis of the knee is the result of wear and tear and general aging. Some people are more prone to early osteoarthritis. The joints are covered with articular cartilage which allows the joint to glide smoothly; this becomes worn with osteoarthritis, causing the bone underneath to become exposed, and involved in the actual joint function. Leading to pain and swelling. In response, the joint produces extra bone around the edge of the joint – called osteophytes – increasing the size of the joint.
