WELCOME TO THE FIRST LOUGHBOROUGH COMMUNITY EYE

ello and welcome to our very first Loughborough Eye magazine! We are delighted to be launching a Loughborough magazine and it brings our total number of community magazines to 7. All of our magazines are delivered free to homes and businesses in various areas across NW Leicestershire every month.

PRE-PAYMENT ONLY DECEMBER - JANUARY - FEBRUARY

It’s been lovely to get out and about in my hometown, meeting businesses and charities to feature in this edition. I have a lot of affection for the town being born in Loughborough General Hospital and educated at schools across the town and finally graduating from Loughborough University. Also in the midst of my youth I was a finalist in the Loughborough Echo personality girl competition! This edition I have chosen Rainbow’s Children’s and Young Peoples hospice as our charity focus as I used to work there as a care team member and wanted to see how much it had changed since I left, I hope you enjoy reading the article as much as I enjoyed writing it. The Pride of Loughborough winners can be found inside too and we enjoyed a fantastic evening at the award presentation, many thanks to Oak FM for inviting us along. We aim to make this magazine a joy to read, interspersed with useful adverts. So if you would like to submit an article or book an advert in please give me a call. The Loughborough Eye is delivered free to 7000 homes and businesses across the town so it’s a cost effective way of reaching a large audience. We also offer a flyer printing and delivery service (with our magazines) to local businesses. We are always looking for images of the town to use on our front cover so feel free to send any across. I look forward to hearing from you and also to receiving some brilliant colouring competition entries for our pantomime ticket give away! So why not curl up in your chair, make a hot cup of tea and enjoy your new local magazine and I’ll make sure your next edition arrives just after Christmas.

Regards, Miriam Bentley

The Pride of Loughborough Awards ceremony reflects the very best that Loughborough has to offer. Last year they brought together a 'who's who' of the local area for a truly glittering celebration. With the generous support of their headline sponsor, Brush, and their category sponsors, Steve Orchard (Chief Executive for Quidem) is delighted that the Oak FM’s Pride of Loughborough Awards have become part of Loughborough's annual calendar of events.

Open Box Promotions joined over 300 VIP guests to help recognise those who make a difference to our community. It was an unbelievable privilege to be sat in a room with so many individuals who selflessly give to the community and who were genuinely shocked at being nominated for these prestigious awards. We shared a table with 4 finalists, Loughborough Kia, Dial a Ride, Youth of Loughborough and Bob Lilley who was joined by his unbelievably supportive wife. Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to Quidem for a fantastic night, we hope to bring you some informative articles about the winners throughout the year and in the lead up to The Pride of Loughborough 2014.

Open Box promotions, home of the Community Eye magazine and Your LOCALS would like to give a big congratulations to all the winners at this years, Pride of Loughborough Awards. A massive well done also needs to be given to all the finalists, as every single finalist had an amazing story to tell and had beaten stiff competition just to make it to the Awards Ceremony. Here are a few more amazing images from the evening and we would personally like to thank Oak FM for their hospitality.

As we had so many beautiful images of the evening we felt it worthy of a separate leaflet and would like to thank Gas Ignite, Rosemary Conley and John Merison for their support with this.

LOUGHBOROUGH BUS TRIAL CONSULTATION LAUNCHES

LIGHT UP A LIFE IN THE EAST MIDLANDS

A six week consultation on proposals for a bus trial through the centre of Loughborough has launched. A part of its ambitious Loughborough Town Centre Transport Scheme, Leicestershire County Council is building an inner relief road which will see traffic diverted away from the heart of the town.

People in the East Midlands are being urged to light up a life and support Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People’s latest appeal. The Light up a Life appeal invites residents to celebrate the memory of a loved one who has sadly passed away, or to acknowledge a treasured person by dedicating a light on the special Tree of Lights at the hospice.

The consultation offers people the chance to have their say on which trial option should be carried out once the scheme is completed in late 2014 / early 2015. Options include: continuing to allow buses two-way access through the A6 Market Place (as present), allowing buses to travel in one direction only (southbound) through the A6 Market Place, or to exclude buses from the area completely. Peter Osborne, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “It is clear people have been keen to express their views on the proposed bus trial so we have decided to enable them to do just that through a public consultation. The Loughborough Town Centre Transport scheme should help to bring the town together to boost Loughborough’s economy, spark regeneration and improve safety, so it is important we get this right.”

RECYCLING CHAMPIONS COULD SCOOP CASH FOR TRASH! RIGHTEOUS recyclers in Charnwood could win more than £850 in cash prizes simply by filling their green bins with the right rubbish. Charnwood Borough Council’s waste management partner Serco will give away £50 every fortnight between November 2013 and June 2014 to residents whose recycling bin is filled correctly. The Cash For Trash initiative is designed to increase the amount of waste recycled throughout the Borough. Refuse crews will target areas of the Borough where recycling is either low or too many green bins are ‘contaminated’ with non-recyclable waste. During their rounds, they will select and inspect bins at random and if the bin has been used correctly, the resident will be offered a cash prize. Councillor Hilary Fryer, Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Cleansing and Open Spaces, said: “Cash For Trash is a brilliant initiative to encourage people to recycle properly”. “The Borough is getting better at recycling our waste but we want to do even more to reduce the amount of waste that is needlessly sent to landfill which ultimately hits taxpayers in the pocket.” Joanne Mortimer Serco’s Contract Manager at Charnwood said, “We are always looking for innovative ways to incentivise local residents to recycle more and the Cash for Trash promotion is a fun way to get the local community involved.” The green bin is used for recycling glass bottles, plastics, papers and jars. It can also be used for yoghurt pots, fruit punnets and metal chocolate tins. Residents who recycle a lot can also request an additional bin if they struggle to fit everything in their existing bin. For more information about waste and recycling visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/pages/recycling

Each dedication will be acknowledged with a commemorative Christmas card and Rainbows adds the name of loved ones to its Book of Remembrance, which is on display at the hospice during the festive period. Rainbows will also send people a special Light up a Life pin badge. Katie Baxter, events and community manager at Rainbows, said: “Christmas is a time to think about those people we love and we invite you to dedicate a light on our special Tree of Lights at the hospice that will shine brightly during the festive period for them. Your light can be to celebrate the memory of a loved one, to acknowledge a special person in your life or as a special Christmas gift. At Rainbows, we care for more than 280 children and all the money raised will go towards supporting them.” There is no minimum donation for a light and all money raised will go to support the work of Rainbows. SECOND-HAND MOTOR TRADERS NEXT HMRC TARGET IN LOUGHBOROUGH, WARNS EXPERT Second-hand motor traders in Loughborough are the latest target for HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) a local expert has warned. Phil Marriott and Carl Whitehead who run Tax Assist Accountants in Loughborough said: “Garage owners and other independent motor traders in Loughborough can expect spot checks and intensive scrutiny of their business records over the next few months. HMRC’s latest taskforce is focusing on the second-hand motor trade industry across the Midlands, as part of a campaign which they say is on target to recover over £3 million in taxes. “Provided they have all the right procedures, records and proof of income and expenditure in place, Loughborough business owners can protect their legitimate earnings and show the tax inspector the door.” Tax Assist Accountants Loughborough is a local business, operating across Loughborough and the surrounding villages, providing tax and accountancy advice and services purely to small businesses.

ANYONE CAN FALL VICTIM TO ROGUE TRADING AND DOORSTEP SELLING Anyone can fall victim to rogue trading and doorstep selling – don’t let it happen to you or someone you know. Charnwood Citizens Advice Bureau have teamed up with Leicestershire County Council Trading Standards to raise awareness about the unfair practices of rogue traders and doorstep sellers in the county and to provide information and advice about how to avoid being conned and keep safe. So far our campaign has taken the form of road shows in public places and at community groups and forums but we also give talks to groups and provide literature that includes useful contact numbers and tips on how to avoid becoming a victim. For more information contact: Jude Warrior, Consumer Awareness Coordinator on 01509 221228 or email cac@charnwoodcab.co.uk If you know of someone who has been approached by a trader on their doorstep tell Trading Standards on 08454 040506 or call into Charnwood Citizens Advice Bureau – opening times and other information can be found on www.charnwoodcab.org.uk

RAINBOWS HOSPICE FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE

I

t had been 12 years since I last stepped through the door at Rainbows, having previously worked there as a Care Team member after graduating. I knew the charity had grown and diversified but I had no idea quite how much!

extremely importantly 521 siblings. Rainbows is a place where parents can have time off being the full time career and siblings can all play, watch TV or swim together, something that in the home environment may be impossible.

The main change is their Building for the Future Project, this expansion not only of service but also of the building has allowed them to accommodate more children and young people. With 6 more bedrooms, facilities for over 18’s which includes a kitchen which is fully accessible to enable users to remain as independent as possible, a new hydrotherapy pool, a young people’s activity and sitting room, 3 new bathrooms, 2 new shower rooms, a bigger multisensory room, a soft play area which I hear is a hit for siblings, and a physiotherapy suite they really have come on in leaps and bounds!

Rainbows is not a sad place it is most definitely a place for living! But this comes at a cost, over £4.5 million per year. Requiring a team of dedicated fundraisers, Rainbows are always looking at new ways of raising the much needed funds to continue operating, from Sponsored Santa Runs to their charity shops in Melton, Blaby and Matlock there are many ways you can help support them. For more information please visit their website www.rainbows.co.uk.

The new facilities also house a beautiful tranquil family support suit, where multi faith resources are available. A reminder of the essential job they do in providing end of life care for children and young people. I use the word reminder as it is so easy to forget that Rainbows is a hospice as you pass wall after wall of stunningly bright displays, rooms full of life and plenty of facilities for various forms of sensory stimulation, including a lovely garden and a large music room. Also in the new extension there is a conference suit which is available for business’ to hire and when not in use the extralarge, bed sized lifts, allow all children to use the conference rooms which convert to a fully accessible cinema room! The change in Rainbows is phenomenal and I have to thank Karen Payne for showing me round. As a mother of 3 it would be my worst nightmare to be told one of my children was dying but sadly around 25000 families are told that every year across the UK. We are unbelievably lucky to have such a fabulous facility on our doorstep which cares for 288 terminally ill children, 249 bereaved families and

STEPHENSON COLLEGE STUDENT VOCATIONAL SKILLS’ PROJECTS ADMIRED BY PRINCESS ANNE Students from Stephenson College in Coalville had the chance to showcase their talents to royalty when Princess Anne visited their exhibition stand at The Skills Show 2013. The princess, who was given a guided tour by college principal Nigel Leigh, chatted with students about their motor vehicle maintenance skills project, which included a race car built as part of the college’s HNC and HND courses. Her Royal Highness was attending the show at Birmingham’s NEC in her role as patron and president of City & Guilds, a main sponsor of the three-day event. The Skills Show, which this year saw attendee numbers grow from 73,000 in 2012 to more than 90,000, celebrates the value of vocational skills and the excellent career opportunities they provide to future generations. It was also sponsored by a group of 20 colleges, which included Stephenson College. Mr Leigh said: “The princess took a lot of interest in our projects and was keen to know how we develop courses to meet the particular employment needs of our geographical area. “She also asked about initiatives such as our studio school which provides the bridge from school into work.” And the Princess Royal was not the only VIP to admire the students’ skills. Retail magnate Theo Paphitis, formerly of BBC’s Dragons’ Den fame, also visited the stand, as did Skills Minister Matthew Hancock. The race car proved to be a major attraction, with hundreds of school children taking up the challenge to realign its wheels using a laser beam. Mike Harvey, lecturer in motor vehicle maintenance at Stephenson College, said: “We’ve had a constant stream of young people – including girls – stopping at our stand to have a go. “It’s been very popular and we’ve succeeded in opening their eyes to the great career opportunities the motor industry has to offer. “There is so much more to the trade than leaning over a car bonnet clutching a spanner. of Formula One cars and jobs in the sector encompass everything from vehicle maintenance and diagnostics through to engineering design, motor retail and customer service. “Our college also has long established links with motor manufactures such as Volvo as well as truck companies like Ryder and Veolia and they’ve been very impressed with what we’re doing.” Stephenson College’s Hair and Beauty stand was an equally big draw with the show’s young visitors. Student Floriann Joyce said she had been run off her feet’ as hundreds of school girls came to the stand for feather extensions in their hair. Hair and Beauty School’s lecturer Georgi Hunter added: “A lot of our visitors wanted to talk to us about careers in hair and beauty, which is great. Taking part in this show has also been good practice for our students and has done a lot for their confidence.“Literally hundreds of people have queued to have our feather extensions, including a few boys who were disappointed to find that their hair was too short for them.”

LOUGHBOROUGH TAE KWON DO CLUB Students of James Freer’s Schools of Tae Kwon Do are heading towards an extremely exciting time over the next month. Having just experienced positive black belt grading results, the club is also about to celebrate Mr Freer’s thirty years of training in Tae Kwon Do in conjunction with the thirtieth anniversary of the Tae kwon Do association of Great Britain. In October Students of Loughborough travelled to Bristol’s Tae Kwon Do academy along with over hundreds of others from all over the UK, to perform in front of a panel of 7th and 8th Dan masters. The results are as follows; Rory McKeating achieved 1st Degree black belt and Yogi Savania achieved 3rd degree black belt. The student’s instructors would just like to take this opportunity to say well done and great to see all their hard work paid off! 2013 also marks Mr Freer 30 years of training in Tae Kwon Do. In these thirty years, he has achieved 6th Degree black belt status, opened three hugely successful clubs, generating over 100 black belts and numerous British and World Champions. These clubs are all part of the T.A.G.B (Tae Kwon Do association of Great Britain) which is the largest single-bodied martial arts organization in Britain, having just hosted the Tae Kwon Do World Championships back in July, also celebrates its thirty year anniversary this year. To celebrate these anniversaries Mr Freer’s students are taking part in a special seminar under Master Ron Sergeiw 8th Dan black belt, one of the founding members of the T.A.G.B. It is definitely proving to be a very exciting and successful time in the world of Tae kwon Do, and here’s to another thirty years. If you too would like to join in the success – then come and join our club! www.leicestershire-tkd.co.uk or call 0116 264 0432 for information about joining.

LOVE FOOD HATE WASTE OPEN BOX PROMOTIONS TAKES PART IN A LOVE FOOD HATE WASTE COURSE

Open Box promotions love food so when the opportunity to take part in a Love Food Hate Waste course run by Leicestershire County Council came along we booked in! I was joined by Office manager Sarah Taylor at the course held at Limehurst Academy aimed at teaching us how to waste less food and make use of leftovers. Our tutor was Amy Perkins and Sarah and I were joined by Yvonne and Mick Mayes, Janet Derbyshire, Reet and Roger Turner, Allison Townsend and Sue Allum. It was interesting to pick up helpful tips on making food last longer, for example, keeping air out of bags with dry food in using pegs, or freezing hard cheese and grating it from frozen!

STAGGERING FACTS

• The average UK household is throwing away the equivalent of six meals every week • An area almost the size of Wales would be needed to grow all of the food we throw away from our homes each year. • Wasted good food and drink costs the average UK family almost £60 a month • It cost the average person £200 a year rising to £290 for people who live on their own. • Of the 4.2 million tonnes of good food that gets wasted, over half hasn’t even made it onto a plate! It goes straight into the bin from our fridges or cupboards because we don’t use it in time • Everyday essentials are in the top three foods that Britons are throwing away – bread, potatoes and milk • 24 million slices of bread are throw away every day in the UK • Despite being the nation’s favourite meat, the equivalent of 86 million chickens are wasted from our homes every year! • Can you imagine five Wembley Stadiums full of food waste? That’s what the amount of good food that we waste every year would fill • The environmental impact of the good food that becomes waste is the same as that produced by a quarter of the cars on UK roads over a year

Stale bread can be revived by sprinkling with water and warming in the oven and rather than keeping lemons in a fruit bowl why not freeze their juice in ice cube trays or freeze them ready sliced for drinks? But when should we throw food away? Once it’s passed it’s USE BY date it is NOT safe to eat however food with a Best Before date can safely be eaten after that expires as long as it isn’t showing signs of deterioration. We all cooked 2 dishes, Chicken Puffs and Broccoli and Cheese soup which were taken in to the Open Box office the next day and shared with our design team! Why not have a go at making them yourself by following the attached recipes?

CHICKEN PUFFS (SERVES 2)

Ingredients: • A large knob of butter • 1 small onion or leek finely chopped • 25-50g Mushrooms, sliced • 1 tbsp Flour • 100ml Stock • 50ml Milk • 100-150g left over cooked chicken or turkey • ½ tsp herbs • Left over sweetcorn, cooked carrots or broccoli, • Seasoning • ½ sheet of ready roll puff pastry. Method: Preheat the oven to 220C Melt the butter in a pan and gently cook the onion/leek for 3 to 4 mins Add the mushrooms cook for another 3 mins Stir in the flour and cook for 2 mins stirring all the time Take the pan off the heat and add the stock and milk, then stir. Put the pan back on the heat and bring to the boil, stirring till thickened Add the chicken/turkey and herbs and cook for 5 mins Stir in any vegetables you are using. Cut the half sheet of pastry in to two rectangles Place a spoon full of mixture into the centre of each piece of pastry and fold the corners up to form a parcel. Bake in the oven for 20 mins until golden.

BROCCOLI AND CHEESE SOUP (SERVES 2) Ingredients: • 1 small onion finely chopped • ½ tsp of olive oil or 15g butter • 1 head of broccoli, cut off the stalk and finely chop, cut the head into florets • 425ml stock • 100g cream cheese or 75g grated cheddar cheese or 75g crumbled stilton cheese • Seasoning

Method: In a large saucepan melt the butter and add the onion Sprinkle over a large pinch of salt and fry for 5 mins Add the chopped broccoli stalk and fry for 3 mins Add the stock and florets and simmer for 20 mins Take off the heat and stir in the cheese Leave to cool slightly then blend with a hand blender Ass freshly ground pepper and salt in needed

Top Tips To Do For The Festive Season • Leave your heating on for at least an hour a day while you are away from home. • In severe weather, or if severe weather is forecast, you should leave your heating on day and night at your usual temperature setting. • Check that loft insulation is laid over, and under pipes in the loft. • Make sure that you know where your stop tap is, and that it works so that you can turn off the water supply if needed. • Consider asking a friend or relative to visit your home every day while you are away. This will mean that, if you do suffer a burst pipe, it will be detected as soon as possible. Make sure that they know where the stop tap is located. • If high winds are forecast, make sure objects such as garden furniture or ladders are fully secured. • Set your heating to come on just before you get up and switch off after you’ve gone to bed. If it’s very cold, set your heating to come on earlier and turn off later rather than turning the thermostat up. • If you can’t heat all the rooms you use, heat the living room throughout the day and your bedroom just before you go to bed. Remember to close curtains and shut doors to keep heat in the rooms you use most. • Fit draught proofing to seal any gaps around windows and doors. • Check your guttering is clear from leaves.

• Make sure that your loft has at least 10-11 inches (270 mm) of insulation. Any home with 4 inches (100 mm) or less should have it topped up. • If you have wall cavities, make sure that they are insulated too. • Insulate your hot water cylinder and pipes. • Draw your curtains at dusk to help keep the heat generated inside your rooms. • Make sure that your radiators are not obstructed by curtains or furniture. • Get your home ready for winter. Get heating and cooking appliances checked, flues and chimneys swept ensuring ventilation points are not blocked. If you use heating oil, LPG or wood products as the main heating source, make sure that you have a sufficient supply to avoid running out. Fit an audible carbon monoxide alarm which is EN50291 compliant, but fitting an alarm should not replace regular maintenance of appliances. • Good hand hygiene can help prevent the spread of norovirus. • Learn a few simple first aid steps; such as how to deal with strains and sprains or broken bones, as trips and falls can increase in icy weather. There are a number of accredited first aid providers and useful education resources available. • Check the forecast and ensure you have enough food and medicines. • Check on elderly neighbours, Clean carpets, Clean ovens & Don’t leave shopping till the last minute!

Turkey Timings

Place in a pre-heated hot oven, gas mark 7, 425°F (220°C), – this initial blast is so that the heat gets right into the turkey and the stuffing very quickly. Then reduce the oven temperature to gas mark 3, 325°F (170°C). 8-10 lb (3.5-4.5 kg) – 30 minutes at the high temperature, then 2½-3 hours at the lower temperature, then a final 30 minutes (uncovered) at gas mark 6, 400°F (200°C). 15-20 lb (6.75-9 kg) – 45 minutes at the high temperature, then 4-5 hours at the lower temperature, then a final 30 minutes (uncovered) at gas mark 6, 400°F (200°C). Please bear in mind that ovens, and turkeys themselves, vary and the only sure way of knowing if a bird is ready is by using the tests: After the final 30 minutes, remove the turkey from the oven. Pierce the thickest part of the leg with a skewer then press the skewer against the leg to see if the juices run clear without any trace of pink – if the juices are clear, the turkey is cooked. You can also give the legs a little tweak – if they feel like they’ve got some ‘give’ in them, then the turkey is done. Cover it loosely with foil and allow it to rest for about 45 minutes before serving – it will be fine at kitchen temperature. As soon as your leftover turkey is cool put in in an air tight box in the fridge.

FRIEZELAND DONATES CHRISTMAS TREE TO OPEN BOX PROMOTIONS Our Open Box office is ready for Christmas thanks to Friezeland Christmas Trees who gave us a tour of their farm and a beautiful Nordaman tree. Situated opposite Bosworth Water Trust the former arable farm started its conversion into a Christmas Tree farm 28 years ago. After driving up a beautiful drive surrounded by historic farm buildings you reach a beautifully decorated Christmas shop in a rustic log cabin. The variety of shapes and sizes of tree available has to be seen to be believed. They offer trees for every need from towering Norway Spruces that would look stunning in a large hallway or business entrance to the Nordaman which retain their needles for longer and would be better suited to warm office environments.

Colouring competition for up to 12 year olds. Closing date Friday 29th November. Postal entries only, please add address details below and cut out. Send entries to: Open Box Promotions 42 Forest Rise Kirby Muxloe Leicestershire LE9 2HQ. NAME: _______________________________________________ AGE: _________________________________________________ ADDRESS: ____________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ CONTACT NUMBER: __________________________________

Friezeland Christmas Tree farm is a family run business and it’s clear that they are very passionate about their product. This year they have planted 24,000 tiny new trees which will take approximately 10 years to be ready for your home. Currently they have over 100,000 trees in the ground growing at an average of 1ft a year. Each tree is hand pruned twice a year to encourage the beautiful shape we require from our Christmas Trees and also base pruned to allow the wind to circulate the tree and blow any dead needles away. At Friezeland trees there is no need to worry about not being able to have the tree of your dreams as you are welcome to go along to tag your chosen tree. You can then return nearer to Christmas to either cut it or dig it out if you would prefer a rooted tree. They are open till 5pm in the evening 7 days a week and you can choose your tree from their floodlit field; your tree is then carried back to your car on a wooden trailer pulled by beautiful Newfoundland Dogs. What a perfect way to start preparing for the festive season!

NEW ONLINE MAP LETS YOU PLOT THE POOP A DIGITAL dog fouling map has been created to plot the poop in Charnwood as part of a council campaign. Charnwood Borough Council has plotted the locations of every dog fouling report it received in 2012 on its My Charnwood webpage. Residents who visit www.my.charnwood.gov.uk can enter their postcode, click on the “Don’t Muck Around” tab and ‘tick’ the dog fouling option to see on a map the locations of reports in their community. They can also tick the dog and litter bin options under “Waste and Recycling” to see how close incidents were to public bins. Councillor Jane Hunt, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Regulatory Services, said: “Our digital dog fouling map is part of our Don’t Muck Around campaign and is an innovative way of showing residents the extent of the problem not just across the borough, but in their own neighbourhoods. “What really stands out is that you can overlay the map with the locations of dog and litter bins so you can see that many of the reports we receive are within metres of bins. “There is no excuse for it. Wrapped dog waste can be placed in any public litter bin and offenders can be fined £80 for failing to clear up after their pets.” The campaign is monitoring dog fouling in nine hotspot areas throughout the Borough. Last year, the campaign achieved a 72% reduction in dog fouling in three hotspot areas. The campaign won Stunt of the Year at the Golden Hedgehog PR Awards and was highly commended for Innovation in Communication at the prestigious MJ Achievement Awards.

LT COL A P RIDLEY THOMPSON TD DL. OUR FORMER PRESIDENT Colonel Aubrey Ridley-Thompson died peacefully at home on the 9th October aged 91. In WW2 he fought with the 4th Hussars in Italy and was commanding a Squadron in Austria before the Regiment returned to England in 1946. Working for Boots before the war he rejoined them on demobilisation but continued soldiering as a territorial with The City of London Yeomanry. When Boots moved him to Nottingham in 1955 Colonel Tony Murray-Smith offered him command of C Sqn the Leicestershire Yeomanry based in Loughborough with outstations in Melton and Burbage. Following their amalgamation Colonel Ridley-Thompson commanded the Leicestershire and Derbyshire Yeomanry from 1960 until his retirement in 1963; he remained an enthusiastic and dedicated supporter as Chairman of The Leicestershire Yeomanry Association. He was also President of the Carillon War Memorial Trust, and a Deputy Lieutenant for Leicestershire.

MR PETER CROOKS Hardly had we digested the news of Col Ridley-Thompson’s passing than we received the sad news that Mr Peter Crooks had passed away. Peter was our present President. He had been a stalwart of the museum for many years and when he retired as Chairman in 2011 we had no hesitation in asking him to accept the post. One of the highlights of Peter’s chairmanship was the special exhibition, ‘Growing up in World War Two’ and the book that was produced to accompany the display. We still use the book today. His funeral will be at 2 pm on Friday 1 November at the Good Shepherd Church on Park Road, Loughborough and afterwards at the Ramada Hotel (Kings Head) on High Street, Loughborough

ARMISTICE DAY/REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY. WHY HAVE TWO? After the Great War the sacrifice made by the fallen was remembered on November 11th, ‘Armistice Day’, each year. At the outbreak of WW2 there was concern that because the 11th November could fall on a weekday it would interrupt production of war supplies. It was therefore agreed, that for the duration of the war, the act of remembrance would be held on the second Sunday in November, ‘Remembrance Sunday’. At the end of the war the subject of remembrance of the fallen was re-visited but by coincidence the 11th fell on a Sunday that year so it was decided the official day of remembrance would be held each year on the second Sunday in November, ‘Remembrance Sunday’. The two minutes silence was first proposed in 1919, five minutes was originally suggested, the King had a battalion of guardsmen parade, ordered them to remain silent and two minutes was decided as the most appropriate time.

STEREOSCOPIC PICTURES We have on the ground floor of the museum a stereoscope with about 100 photos. It is very popular and people are amazed at the quality of the photos (they are from WW1) however you have to look though the viewer to see them. The problem appears to have been solved by this Spanish company who have 500 stereoscopic photos of WW1 and have put a sample on the internet. This is 3D on your laptop. Must visit, click on: www.vimeo.com/75787815

ELIZABETH EGUNDEBI Some of you will remember Elizabeth Egundebi, a young lady who worked with us as a volunteer last year, helping to catalogue the collection and travelling each week from Leicester to do so. I am delighted to be able to tell you that she as been accepted at Nottingham Trent University doing Museum Studies. We all wish her all the very best for the future. The picture shows Elizabeth and Helen Musson, another volunteer who left us for Leicester University to do a Masters in Museum Studies. We have been able to help Helen in providing some information for a paper she was writing about a VC winner of the Royal Leicestershire Regiment and hopefully we will be able to be of help to Elizabeth in the future.

ROYAL LEICESTERSHIRE MEMORIAL APPEAL The Royal Leicestershire Regiment, ‘The Tigers’ wishes to raise £40.000 for a memorial to the regiment in the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas in Staffordshire. This memorial, together with the Regimental Chapel in Leicester Cathedral, the Regimental museum in Leicester and Royal Tigers Wood at Bagwoth, will form the last visible testimonies to this famous Regiment to serve as reminders to future generations of the glorious part it played in the life of the history of the City, county and nation. The County’s regiment was first raised in 1688 and served continuously until amalgamation into the present Royal Anglian Regiment in 1964. Over almost 300 years the Regiment served with great distinction world-wide, gaining an impressive list of Battle Honours. In the Great War the Regiment fielded 19 battalions and lost 8,600 killed.

DOWNTON ABBEY Fans of Downton Abbey will have seen the episode on 13 October where Dame Nellie Melba appeared (played by Dame Kiri Janette Te Kanawa) Dame Nellie also attended the unveiling of the carillon in 1923. It is sometimes claimed that she sang at the ceremony but that is not true, however it is reported that she was so moved by the occasion, that she cried. The reason for her attendance was because she wanted a carillon to be built in Australia as part of the National Memorial for those who fell in the Great War. A National Memorial was built but without a carillon. Dame Nellie had raised large sums of money for war charities during WW1 and for that she was created, Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) and is featured on the present Australian 100 dollar note. Useless fact! Such was her popularity she has had four food items named in her honour, Peach Melba, Melba Sauce, Melba Toast and Melba Garniture (chicken, truffles & mushrooms)

CARILLON TOWER & WAR MEMORIAL MUSEUM NEWS GET IN TOUCH 01509 263370 - CARILLONMUSEUM@GMAIL.COM WHAT’S NEW Mr Bernard Smith has gifted the museum a number of documents that belonged to his father, George Smith, George was serving with The Durham Light Infantry when he was taken prisoner in 1918. Amongst he document is this poem written by George as a POW. The film industry has fed us a diet of falsehoods about the lives of POWs. In the Hollywood version prisoners wandering about, smoking pipes and discussing escape plans, in the background others are playing football or doing a bit of gardening. The truth is that most prisoners were used as slave labour, in factories and down mines. This poem reflects that truth. I am a poor gefagener, I wish that I were dead I’m fed up with drinking rotten soup and eating mouldy bread I sleep up in a corner my bed is on the floor My neck is nearly broken my back is awful sore. At six o’clock each morning I wake up with a fright There’s a sentry standing over me shouting Rouse! Lerick! Arbeit! I don’t know what it’s all about I must have done some crime When I hear My big white chief shout out “Rouse you English swine” Each evening when I come from work I sit beside the fire And there I settle down to read ‘The Continental Liar’ ? you should hear the tales they tell they are the reel route They have drove us from the Dardenelles and England is Capute. I have typed it out as it is written, ‘gefagener’ is prisoner, ‘Arbeit’ is work but I haven’t a clue what ‘Lerick’ is but it may be spelt wrongly as is ‘Capute’ which I believe should be ‘Kaputt’ meaning broken. I do not understand his choice of reading material; The Continental Liar is a book about the American President, James G Blaine, pretty heavy stuff for a private soldier, unless he is referring to German propaganda; as alluded to in the last two lines.

“CALL THAT A RIFLE” We are in possession of a WW1 German anti-tank rifle, which was missing the bolt. However Mr John Harvey of Hudson Street has come to the rescue. Using an original bolt, borrowed from the Lancashire Fusiliers Regimental Museum in Bury, he has produced, in his workshop, a replacement. When the British introduced tanks to the battlefield in 1916 the Germans had no bullet that would penetrate the armour. They quickly produced this Mauser T-Geweher that fired 13.3mm armour piercing round. Less than 16,000 were produced and because of the weight and size very few were brought back as souvenirs. It is a rare object. Where did the original bolt go? A possible explanation is that the German rifleman fearing they were about to be over run, removed the bolt and disposed of it, thus rendering the rifle useless if it fell into the enemy’s hands. We are most grateful to Mr Harvey for his help in restoring the rifle to its original look. Link to the Fusiliers Museum: Fusilier Museum: Home

HERO HONOURED A Loughborough soldier has been honoured for leading a team that seized more than £30 million of drugs and a tonne of explosives from Afghan insurgents. Major Adam Foden, a former pupil of Loughborough Grammar School, has been awarded the Distinguished Service Order for being in charge of 30 anti-insurgency operations in Helmand province. e said, “We all felt enormous pride in these seizures. H You could sense, talking to Afghans, the tangible effect of that work on their day-to-day lives.”

MEDALS RETURNED A Princess Mary Christmas box (they were sent to troops serving abroad at Christmas 1914) with a set of WW1 medals and other small items were passed to us having been found by a small boy in Leicester. Marigold Cleeve, a volunteer researcher, armed with only the number, rank, name and regiment of the recipient of the medals, as marked on them, very quickly drew up the family tree and came up with the telephone number of a grandson in Birmingham. Through him we spoke to the granddaughter in Leicester who had lost the box and medals some time ago. The lady in question asked for no publicity but it was very satisfying to be able to return the items to their rightful owner. All credit to Marigold.

VOLUNTEER WANTED RETAILS SALES Like any other museum we sell some small souvenirs at our counter but have never really taken it very seriously or made much of an effort. However a visit by a ‘Retail Expert’ earlier in the year made us realise we were wasting an opportunity to raise money and (in museum speak) enhance the visitor experience. What we need is someone to be responsible for the shop stock, stocktaking, re-ordering and improving on the displays. About one hour once a fortnight during the open season should be all it takes. During the close season some occasional liasing with Charnwood Museum to replace any items of ours they have sold.

FINAL WORD I am always looking for ‘Jiffy’ bags, particularly A4 size. In reasonable condition for re-use. Will collect. Email me: carillonmuseum@gmail.com. I always welcome contributions. (In fact I am desperate) If you have anything you would like to have included then send it to: carillonmuseum@gmail. com. Don’t forget! Visit us at: www.loughborough-rollofhonour.com

THE ROYAL LEICESTERSHIRE REGIMENTAL ASSOCIATION APPEAL The memorial will take the form of a tiger mounted upon a large Irish Blue limestone plinth in an attractive surround. The approximate dimensions will be 5’ 6” long, 3’ wide and 5’ 9” high. A brief history of the Regiment will be shown on the rear panel and major Battle Honours will be listed on the two ends. It will be situated in the high profile National Memorial Arboretum alongside the memorials to many other regiments who fought alongside the Tigers. On the right, Cpl Phillip Smith winning the regiments first Victoria Cross at Sevastopol in 1855.
