Substandard legal work risking home moves claims Coalville law expert Homebuyers are being warned their dream moves are under threat due to “substandard conveyancing not fit for purpose”, warns Coalvilles leading legal practice. The warning from Jim Abbott, senior partner at QualitySolicitors Mander Cruickshank Mander Cruickshank comes at the same time as the Office for National Statistics reports that house price inflation rose by 3.1 per cent in the year to June 2013, whilst the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors showed house prices rising at their fastest rate for almost seven years. Jim Abbott, a senior partner said the public has to be made aware that poor quality property conveyancing is in some cases leading to sales collapsing in the worst case, and at minimum giving unnecessarily huge amounts of stress to everyone involved in property chains.

Claim your free tree by 28 October - thanks to the National Forest The overwhelmingly popular North West Leicestershire Free Tree Scheme is back again for 2013 – and this year we’re branching out… We’ve teamed up with the National Forest Company to offer every home and community group in North West Leicestershire a chance to grow their own trees. The scheme has already seen local people plant thousands of trees all across the district – all part of our ‘Green Footprints’ commitment to make us all feel prouder of our district. And new for this year is our Hedge Fund – but not the sort favoured by London bankers! We have a limited amount of packs available – containing mostly hawthorns and a smaller number of other suitable hedge trees. To find out more about what trees are available this year – and to place an order, please complete the form at www.footprints.nwleics.gov.uk/free-tree-scheme-2013 The closing date for applications is Monday 28th October and the collection day is Sunday 24th November – please put the date in your diary, as this will be the only opportunity for you to collect your trees. The district council will confirm the collection point information by email. For more information contact Wendy May on 01530 454769 or wendy.may@nwleicestershire.gov.uk

Mr Abbott, whose firm has offices in Coalville and Hinckley, said: “I have known people to be in tears because of the heartache and stress all because of substandard conveyancing not fit for purpose.” “We sometimes hear of buyers going with the firm recommended by the estate agents and then tearing their hair out because they have an unsatisfactory experience dealing purely over phone with the people overseeing the most expensive financial transaction of their lives,” he added. “Buoyed by some long overdue good news for the housing market there will be those looking to move, but beware that estate agents are acting for the seller so it’s not your interests they have at heart,” added Mr Abbott, whose firm have been in Coalville since 1923. Mr Abbott, also strongly advised those moving to be certain that their conveyancers are approved by the lenders. “If your legal representation isn’t approved by the lender then another firm is involved to oversee the work of your conveyancer. This greatly slows down the process and adds terrible stress, which all buyers will agree isn’t worth it.” He said that property transactions can be very complex and that is why a strong relationship is needed between a home buyer and their solicitor. “It can be vital that the buyer speaks to his solicitor face to face to see the best way of overcoming issues, other than in a call centre where often you never speak to the same person twice,” he said. “With most property transactions involving six figured fees nowadays good local law firms making sure that every detail has been looked at correctly, and acting in the buyer’s interest is still unquestionably the safest and wisest legal choice,” he added. Anyone wishing to speak to QualitySolicitors Mander Cruickshank about property issues can do so on 01530 510666

Coalville Food, Drink and Music Festival With just 30 days to go, it is time to look for special treats for Christmas and the first ever Coalville Food, Drink and Music Festival is just the place to be. On 23 November, the Town Team will be transforming the Precinct and surrounding areas into an event for all the family. We will have food stalls in the Precinct selling hot food to eat on the spot and special treats to take home and cook at Christmas. There will be craft stalls with those last minute Christmas gifts. Free parking has been arranged at Snibston, and the train will be running to ferry people to and from the town centre. Once you step off the free train ride, you will find an ICE RINK in Needhams Walk Car Park, with a Routemaster Bus housing a bar and music of all types, all day long. So why not take a well-earned break and listen to the bands whilst the more energetic glide around the ice rink. The children have not been forgotten. You can drop the underfives at our Creche on the precinct where they can play under the supervision of fully trained and certificated staff. Older children can take part in activities arranged by Mantle Arts and take away their own souvenir of the day. So, whilst the children play safely, adults can browse the stalls and pick up all those last minute Christmas treats. So put the date in your diary. Saturday 23 November 2013 and come along to the first, annual Coalville Food, Drink and Music Festival.

This year the squadron sold Help for Heroes merchandise and collected donations at both Ibstock Show and Shackerstone Show. In total the squadron has raised £325 this summer.

The days have finally started to get cooler and the evenings are pulling in so our next edition will feature suggestions on how you can get your house ready for winter both inside and out. November also sees the launch of our Loughborough Eye and we are now taking bookings for advertisements.

Flying Officer Harrison said, “It never ceases to amaze me how generous people are, even in financially difficult times. I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has helped the squadron raise money. We have raised more than last year”.

I hope you enjoy your October magazine and look forward to starting on our November editions soon.

COALVILLE OCTOBER 2013:Layout 1 15/10/2013 14:11 Page 4

The new allotment site not only provides over 40 plots for local people to grow their own produce but also much needed space for a new community bee hive facility to help the local bee population, and an opportunity to produce our very own local honey. I am sure this project will go from strength to strength due to the dedication of the local members who are so eager to make this project a success."

The bedroom tax or spare room subsidy reduces the amount of Housing Benefit by up to 25% to those in Social Housing who are deemed to have spare bedrooms. The Coalition Government claim the policy is an attempt to make better use of Social Housing by encouraging tenants to move to smaller homes and free up larger homes for families. However, it has been shown up and down the Country that there are very few smaller homes to move into and tenants are therefore trapped and forced to make up the benefit cut themselves. Recent information from Councils across the Country shows that 19 out of 20 families hit by the bedroom tax are trapped in their larger homes because there is nowhere smaller within the local social housing stock to take them. Councillor Nick Clarke, who has been leading the opposition campaign, believes North West Leicestershire is no different, stating that; “In August there were just 6 one bedroom homes available within NWLeics and well over 500 Council tenants affected by the bedroom tax. Even if you believe tenants should move, which I don’t, it is clear that this policy simply punishes the poor.” In a packed Council chamber Labour Group Leader Councillor Tom Neilson called the policy; “cruel, ill-conceived and unfair” and went on to say “the bedroom tax punishes the poor and low paid, the vulnerable and the disabled.” Labour Councillor John Legrys pointed out that a “no eviction” policy could actually save the Council money as there are huge costs involved in evicting tenants, and then the Council is responsible for re- housing those that are evicted at further cost to the tax payer. However, the Tory administration refused to support the motion, stating that they would continue to evict tenants as a “last resort”. Councillor Clarke stated that; “I believe as long as the tenant co-operates with the Council to try and address arrears, it is right to remove the threat of eviction when the arrears are due to the bedroom tax.” The proposal was put to the vote and lost by 20 to 15. Councillor Leon Spence said after the meeting; “The amazing thing is one Tory Councillor agreed with the principle, but still wouldn’t support our motion.” After the meeting Cllr Clarke said “it’s disappointing, but not surprising that the motion was lost. I intend to continue the campaign in one form or another until the Government is forced to think again. It is good to see that the next Labour Government will reverse the policy.”

Council Chairman launches 2013 poppy appeal

The 1st Oct saw The One Stop Shoe Repair on the High Street celebrate its first year of trading. So The Community Eye popped along to have a chat with owner Ryan to see how his year has gone. Ryan quite clearly has a fantastic rapport with his customers and has many years of experience in the trade. However he took the decision to open his own business because he felt he needed a new challenge! It’s obvious he has risen to this as many of his customers are extremely loyal and most visit his shop due to a recommendation from a friend. His first year of trading has gone extremely well and the continual flow of smiling customers greeted with a cheery ‘hello’ whilst we were there is testament to his approachable demeanour. The shop is quite an Yale Key Cut £2.50 - Ladies Heels Re-Heeled £5 Aladdin’s cave inside and is far, far more than just a lock (one voucher per customer) shop. Ryan offers a specialist engraving service, shoe repair service, watch battery and strap service, as well as key cutting. Throughout the year Ryan has added to his shop and it is now also stocked with a range of gifts from quirky tobacco tins to leather belts and wallets and houses a large stock of pet disks which of course he can engrave for you.

Birthday special

Ryan clearly enjoys being part of the local community and would like to wish town Scene good luck with their food & drinkfair on the 23rd November. When asked about the next year he plans more of the same, a good service and more giftware. We all hope his next year goes just as well as his first!

This year’s North West Leicestershire Poppy Appeal will be launched on Saturday 26 October at the War Memorial in Coalville. Chairman of the Council Cllr Geraint Jones and members of the Whitwick Branch of the Royal British Legion, invite you to join them at the War Memorial in Coalville at 11.30am to launch this year’s Poppy Appeal. Your donations to this very worthy cause are very much appreciated. They will be joined by members of the Army and Air Cadets to mark the occasion. Poppies will then be sold in various locations around the district, including the Council Offices. If you require any further details, please contact Angela Bexton on 01530 454601 or email angela.bexton@nwleicestershire.gov.uk

One Stop Shoe Repair Celebrates Its First Year of Trading

At the Council meeting on 17th Sept, the Labour Group at NWLeics District Council asked that the Council adopts a policy whereby Council tenants hit by the so-called bedroom tax who fall into rent arrears are not evicted from their homes. This follows a long campaign from the local Labour Group who presented a petition to the Council a few days before the meeting.

Continued from front page of a Community facility come to fruition. It's been a lot of hard work but it's clearly been worth all the effort by everyone who's given their support to this community project, which includes a community orchard.

Christmas Tree Extravaganza Christ Church on London Road, Coalville will be hosting its biennial Christmas Tree Extravaganza this year, and is looking forward to welcoming children of all ages to enjoy the atmosphere of preparation for Christmas with lots of trees decorated by members of the community and congregation. The church will be open from 2pm to 6pm each Saturday and Sunday from Sat 7th Dec - Sun 22nd December inclusive. Hot drinks and mince pies will be available along with the opportunity to stay and chat a while. A warm welcome is assured.

Wyatt calls on Tories to allow Snibby Museum freedom to expand into exhibitions and fairs! County councillor Michael Wyatt has called on the Leader of Leicestershire County Council, Nicholas Rushton, to allow Snibston Discovery Park to expand into the private exhibition and fairs market. Cllr Wyatt, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Warren Hills, said, "Snibston Discovery Park reflects Coalville's rich coal mining heritage something we should all be proud of. I really do believe that Snibston Discovery Park could become a first class venue, providing exhibition and events facilities in the East Midlands. Holding such events at the Park would not only bring in much needed income to the Discovery Park, but also much needed business into Coalville in general, which is currently suffering from years of neglect. I recognise there is a question of cost, which we are all concerned about. It needn't necessarily result in cost to the tax-payer. A new Director of Events could be appointed, and whose salary would be based on results. I believe that this could be a way forward to not only help Snibston Discovery Park financially but also our town as a whole."

Do you know what the Marlene Reid Centre actually do? The Community Eye popped along to meet up with Bev and here is just a taste of what they have on offer! Give Food For Thought to Support Local Charity The MRC are appealing to local schools, churches, organisations and individuals to support them by donating canned and fresh food during the Harvest Festival period. This year we provided 118 food parcels to local people who, for whatever reason, had found themselves homeless or in hard times. This was two and half times more than they provided last year. As always, MRC Community Action can arrange to collect the food donations alternatively you can drop them into Reception at The Marlene Reid Centre.

Grit Bins in Coalville Back in March this year it was decided that NWLeics District Council should explore the possibility of funding some Grit Bins in the Coalville area. At a meeting of the Coalville Special Expenses Working Party Councillor Leon Spence proposed that the Council should look into the sourcing of grit bins, and it was unanimously agreed this would be beneficial to local residents. After consulting with local Councillors, who suggested a number of sites in Coalville and Thringstone, numerous new Grit Bins have now been installed. Councillor Nick Clarke who is Chair of the Coalville Special Expenses Working Party said; “I requested a number of Grit Bins after being contacted by residents earlier in the year. I’m delighted the District Council has found the money to fund some new ones. It is important to thank all the members of the Working Party for their input, and Council Officers for their hard work in securing the new bins.”

Exchange Scheme Proves To Be A Success! Since its launch MRC Community Exchange has already exchanged more than 2,500 hours with 37 local people by developing lots of different ways for the local community to get involved with each other.

RESIDENTS URGED TO PROTEST AGAINST THE “BIN TAX” On Tuesday 24th September the Cabinet of North West District Council agreed amongst other cost saving measures to introduce a charge of £30 to all residents in North West Leics for collecting their “Green Waste” Bins.

There are only a few weeks for residents in North West Leics to make their voice heard. It is absolutely crucial that residents let the Council know what they think about this measure before the final decisions are taken. If enough residents protest it may be possible to reverse this bad decision. The message to the Council should be – “Bin the Bin Tax.“ Residents can make their views known by writing or going on the Councils website at :http://www.nwleics.gov.uk/pages/201415budgethaveyoursay or write to the Council at:North West Leicestershire District Council, Council Offices, Coalville, Leicestershire, LE67 3FJ.

County Councillor Michael Wyatt has welcomed the decision by the Leicestershire County Council Highways Department to install additional new grit bins in Greenhill and Bardon after Cllr Wyatt requested a number of grit bins to be installed locally to help prevent locals being trapped in their homes due to lack of grit being available. Cllr Wyatt said, "I am delighted to see that the sites I have put forward have now have a grit bin installed. for a number of years now local people have found themselves stuck in their street due to the Council's failure to grit the side streets. Hopefully having these additional bins will go some way to help provide local residents with the tools to grit the streets that prevent people from getting to work or school due to ice on our local roads."

All these decisions are now out for public consultation which ends on November 8th. The results of the consultation will be reported back to the Cabinet in December. Councillor Dave De Lacy added “These charges are being made to try to make up for the massive cuts in the funding that the Council receives from the Coalition Government.”

Dave De Lacy said “These new charges are very bad news and if they are introduced will inevitably reduce recycling in the District. Some angry residents have already told me that they will not be prepared to pay these charges and will send back their green waste bins. The Council in the past has been proud of its green credentials and environmental policies. This is a major setback.”

In 1972 Loughborough Hospital Radio started but only £30 per 16 square foot BOARDING ran through an internal system so could only be heard though the bedside headphones. In 1992 a general broadcast licence was granted to allow the radio to broadcast on am and be received in the hospital and the town. On the 10th Dec 1999 Carillon Radio was launched on 1386 AM, they then expanded to cover Coalville, Ashby, Melton Mowbray and Oakham hospitals. In 2003 they applied to OFCOM for a community broadcast licence, however sadly this was turned down. In June 2007 after several meetings with OFCOM they were invited to apply again, this time with success. On the 17th July 2007 Hermitage FM was granted it’s Community Broadcast Licence. In September of the same year they found their premises on Hotel Street and spent a year building the Station. They are supported by a very kind local farmer who houses their transmitter for free.

FM is 10% radio and 90% community and the coffee lounge walls are testament to that. With community artwork for sale hung on the walls and posters for quiz nights and coach trips it’s clear that they have the community at the heart of everything they do. So how can you help? Hermitage have outgrown their old premises and thanks to East Midlands Housing Association and Quality Solicitors Mander Cruickshank they have a fantastic building in Memorial Square which will enable them to expand the coffee shop and offer outside seating.

They are also having a meeting room and conservatory which will be available for local groups and businesses to use. Upstairs they will have 3 studios, one of which will be a training studio for anyone who has always wanted to have a go at presenting! But this project needs £50,000 to be completed. Currently phase one is being undertaken by John Merrison’s team and this sees a new look to the front of the property and the removal of internal walls to reveal a spacious coffee shop. Some carpets have been donated but they still need 8',+$ 75,(!"5,+9$ /&,:+"69$ ;'',!(*9$ &$ ,+2"$ "'$ "#+$ 3!6&<0+3$ "'!0+"$ &(3$ adjustments making to the existing kitchen. I know that our readers love to support local groups and one of the ways you can help is by donating to the 24hr radio Marathon being undertaken by Heritage FMs own broadcaster Anthony. Anthony has kidney failure and has dialysis 3 times a week, he is unable to work full time but can be heard entertaining people on their journey to work or school in the mornings! He will be on air from 10am Sunday 17th November to 10am Monday 18th and is asking for sponsorship to raise funds for the new premises and also Leicester Kidney Patients Association. More information can be found at www.hermitagefm. com. Donation buckets will also be at the station on the Sunday when you can pop in for a coffee and also announce your dedications live on air in exchange for donating. They will also be at the Snibston Firework Spectacular. Alternatively you can send donations directly to the station on Hotel Street.

The Academy worked in partnership with Leicestershire and Rutland FA to secure a £409,265 grant from the Football Foundation, the country’s largest sports charity. Stewart Goacher, Headteacher at Newbridge High School Academy, said: ‘We are delighted that a 3G AGP has successfully come to North West Leicestershire. There have been many people in many different areas who worked extremely hard to secure the funding and identify Newbridge as the designated site. Without the grant from the Football Foundation we would not have been able to offer the pupils of Newbridge High School Academy or the local and wider community this fantastic, state-of-the-art, 3G pitch.’ Newbridge High School Academy also offers a wide range of other facilities and caters for a variety of local clubs. A large indoor sports hall, performing arts area, grass football pitches, multi use rooms and brand new conference rooms are all available to hire. We, at the Community Eye, think it’s fantastic that Coalville have this facility and are sure it will become an invaluable resource for the local area! Well done Newbridge!

RESIDENTS URGED TO PROTEST AGAINST THE “BIN TAX”

Looking for a new New Grit Bins in challenge...

On Tuesday 24th September the Cabinet of North West District Council agreed amongst other cost saving measures to introduce a charge of £30 to all residents in North West Leics for collecting their “Green Waste” Bins.

The Community Eye and Your Local magazines are looking for someone with a friendly and helpful personality, who is confident to approach new businesses in person on the telephone and email, to help with the month to month running of the magazines. The job entales building up relationships with customers and groups in the local area, selling and booking in adverts and collecting interesting and informative articles.

Sat 2nd November “

Oxjam Music Festival”

District Councillor Dave De Lacy who speaks for Labour on the Environment is urging residents across North West Leicestershire to protest against these proposed charges by responding to the Councils public consultation on these measures.

The Y Theatre Leicester Fri 15th November

Dave De Lacy said “These new charges are very bad news and if they are introduced will inevitably reduce recycling in the District. Some angry residents have already told me that they will not be prepared to pay these charges and will send back their green waste bins. The Council in the past has been proud of its green credentials and environmental policies. This is a major setback.” All these decisions are now out for public consultation which ends on November 8th. The results of the consultation will be reported back to the Cabinet in December. Councillor Dave De Lacy added “These charges are being made to try to make up for the massive cuts in the funding that the Council receives from the Coalition Government.” There are only a few weeks for residents in North West Leics to make their voice heard.

Greenhill and Bardon County Councillor Michael Wyatt has welcomed the decision by the Leicestershire County Council Highways Department to install additional new grit bins in Greenhill and Bardon after Cllr Wyatt requested a number of grit bins to be installed locally to help prevent locals being trapped in their homes due to lack of grit being available.

North West Leicestershire remembers on 10 November This year’s North West Leicestershire Remembrance Service and Parade is on Sunday 10 November. The day starts with a service at Christ Church at 9.45am – followed by the parade from around 10.35am outside the church. It’s organised by North West Leicestershire District Council with the Whitwick Branch of the British Legion. The Lord-Lieutenant, Lady Gretton, will lay wreath at the War Memorial – along with the Chairman of the Council, and many others. The Northamptonshire Cadet Force, F Squadron Corps of Drums will also be in the parade. This year the Coalville and District Bikers (including ex-servicemen) will bring up the rear of the parade – before making their way to National Arboretum after the service at the War Memorial. Chairman of the Council Cllr Geraint Jones, said: “I would be pleased to see as many people as possible support this day of Remembrance – not only for those who lost their lives in the two World Wars, but for those who have died in the current conflicts around the world today.” On 11 November at 11am, Cllr Jones will be at the War Memorial with members of The Royal British Legion for a short service to mark the two minutes’ silence. A maroon will mark the start and finish of the two minutes. Please come along to support this short service. Uniformed groups that wish to take part in the service and parade should contact Angela Bexton on 01530 454603 or email angela.bexton@nwleicestershire.gov.uk. If you want any more information please contact Angela.

One Stop Shoe Repair Celebrates Its First Year of Trading

1905

At the Council meeting on 17th Sept, the Labour Group at NWLeics District Council asked that the Council adopts a policy whereby Council tenants hit by the so-called bedroom tax who fall into rent arrears are not evicted from their homes. This follows a long campaign from the local Labour Group who presented a petition to the Council a few days before the meeting.

Continued from front page of a Community facility come to fruition. It's been a lot of hard work but it's clearly been worth all the effort by everyone who's given their support to this community project, which includes a community orchard.

COALVILLE OCTOBER 2013:Layout 1 15/10/2013 14:11 Page 3

Coalville Air Cadets raise money for Help for Heroes

Our new centre spread has a Spooky feel and a What’s On Guide for Halloween and Bonfire events. Why not have a go at making the spider crispy cakes with your kids and see how scary you can make them look! As promised I have featured a little gem I found whilst out and about and I urge you all to read the article about Hermitage FM as they are in need of your help! Also in this months edition we have news from the Marleine Reid Centre, the opening of the first 3G football pitch in NW Leics and we went along to wish Ryan at One Stop Shoe Repair a happy first year of trading. I have loved being out and about covering events for you so if you have any more up and coming events you would like us to attend please get in touch. This will be the last edition of the Community Eye in its current form as we are re-launching all our Community Eye Magazines to give you even more local news and information. So look out for your new look magazine coming in November!

1188 (Coalville) Squadron is currently recruiting cadets both male and female. If you are aged 13 – 17 and would like to join the local air cadets they meet in the headquarters on Forest Road, Coalville on Tues and Thurs from 7.15pm until 9.30pm.
