Support Taylor Gough

Article by The Matt Hampson Foundation Taylor Gough remains in intensive care at Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham, where the Leicester Tigers back-rower has been since mid-June after being involved in a major road incident. The 20-year-old suffered multiple injuries, including severe spinal injuries, on the weekend ahead of the squads return to Phase One training at Oval Park and is currently suffering from paralysis and unable to move his legs. Speaking on behalf of the club, Leicester Tigers Chairman Peter Tom said We were all very sad to receive the news and, since finding out, everyone at Tigers has had Taylor in their thoughts. We have remained in daily contact with his family and will continue to support Taylor and them through this situation.

Regarding "Blood Hill" Article In Last Months Edition I have lived in Kirby Muxloe all my long life, growing up on Main Street. I write re the item "Blood Hill" in the August issue of the Your Local. Your correspondent-along I believe with others not native to the village - is mistaken in the name of the hill he describes. That hill is "Big Hill" beloved in my youth for sledging. "Blood's Hill" is the hill on Ratby Lane, there were various apocryphal stories as to how it got its name. Some time ago I went on a Blue Badge guided walk around the bottom end of the village. The guide told us that in years gone by a Mr Blood was given permission to graze his cattle on the verges, which at that time were very wide. Hence the name. Further information regarding the name of the road has recently come to light. A friend whilst researching the earliest dates for place names and parish boundaries studied an old map of Leicester Forest. The map shows Blood Hill at the bottom of the hill near to the present-day roundabout. The road which we refer to as "Blood's Hill" goes through Cope Gate or Queen's Gate then becomes Coalpit Lane and Kirby Park (1475) is on the right-hand side. The building accounts for the castle refer to this road as Cope Lane but this could have been Coalpit Lane. Finally, the footpath to Big Hill can also be accessed from Oakcroft Avenue.

Great Central Railway Turned Down By Heritage Lottery’s Emergency Funding Article by Michael Stokes

On the 26th August, the Great Central Railway received the disappointing news that their bid for £250,000 of emergency funding from the Heritage Lottery’s Emergency Fund has been turned down. The fund intended to support organisations “stabilise operations and manage unforeseen risks and costs” and “to cover essential costs for up to four months”. Other heritage railways such as Severn Valley, Keighley and Worth Valley, Nene Valley and the Crich Tramway Museum have been helped by the fund which has been set up to assist heritage ventures navigate the Covid-19 crisis. Commenting on the news, the Railway’s Managing Director, Michael Gough said “This is another bitter blow from the HLF – they don’t seem to like us very much, having turned us down for the museum grant 3 years ago and now this. I am stunned, to be frank - the bid was accompanied by a very thorough cash flow analysis; I was sure that they would see how we are running out of funds and would have helped us this time. For me, it really brings into perspective and a stark comparison the generosity of the folk who come here, enjoy the heritage we are protecting and write in enclosing a £10 donation to help us” Contact Michael Stokes Tel. 07710 934788

Protecting Your Family’s Inheritance Article by Klara Hesling Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually. But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the Trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased's share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children's inheritance is protected. This last point can be of particular interest to couples who have come together and have children from different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property they can still sell the property and the proceeds be used to purchase a new property; the terms of the Trust remain over the new property. Kornerstone Wealth Protection and Legal services will assess your current circumstances and arrange the trust that will provide the best protection for you, your family and your assets.

T: 0116 2394336 M: 07808585825 E: ozzyoshea@hotmail.com Applications for secondary school places now open Parents and carers with children due to start secondary school in Leicestershire in September 2021 can now apply for school places.

Melton Museum Re-opens Thursday 10th September Opening Days: Thurs – Sat, 10am – 4pm Pre-book via www.meltonmuseum.org.uk Harborough Museum Re-opens Wednesday 9th September Opening Days: Tues – Fri, 10am – 12pm and 2 – 4.30pm Sat, 10am – 3.30pm Pre-book via www.harboroughmuseum.org.uk

The application process is now open, with parents required to apply for their preferred schools by Saturday, 31 October 2020.

Call to ‘remember the basics on Coronavirus Residents are urged to play their part in a new push to drive down stubbornly high coronavirus numbers across Leicestershire.

Choosing which schools to apply for is one of the most important decisions a family can make, the County Council is committed to working with parents and carers to support them as they make this choice.

Leicestershire County Council’s director of public health, Mike Sandys, is calling on people – whether they’re in the pub, the park or their home – to remember the basics and put social distancing top of their list.

Last year over 95 per cent of Leicestershire’s children secured a place at a preferred school, so we’d like to remind parents to maximise their opportunities by applying for three schools, including their catchment school.

Latest figures show that rates in three districts remain above the national average of 10.9 per 100,000 people – Melton (11.7), Blaby (16.9) and Oadby and Wigston (17.5) – although Leicestershire remains lower than the rate for England.

There is no automatic entry for any school, so it is very important for applications to be submitted before the closing date of 31 October.

“We’ve made big strides in Leicestershire - and that’s down to the hard work of residents. Although we’ve seen rates fall in some hot spots, we’re not seeing the countywide drop we’d hoped for meaning that numbers are nearly half of our districts are higher than we’d like.

More information about schools in Leicestershire and the application process can be found on the County Councils website. You can type this link you’re your website to take you to the correct page. www.leicestershire.gov.uk/education-and-children/schools-colleges-andacademies/school-admissions For further advice on your preferred schools and information around virtual open days, please contact the individual schools directly. Parents unable to apply online can download a form from the website, fill it in and post it by the closing date. Alternatively, they may call the Customer Service Centre on 0116 305 6684 and request a form to be sent out. Re-opening of Leicestershire County Council Operated Museum and Heritage Sites The County Council Museum and Heritage sites of Bosworth Battlefield, 1620s House and Gardens at Donington le Heath, Melton Museum and Harborough Museum closed to the public in March 2020 in line with government advice. From 1st July 2020 government advice changed to permit museum and heritage sites to re-open with various restrictions in place. Significant work has been underway to prepare sites to re-open to the public safely and in line with relevant guidance. This has required the installation of screens in welcome, ticket and retail spaces, clear signage, the provision of one-way systems, removal and/or adaptations to some interactive exhibits, installation of hand sanitising stations and enhanced cleaning regimes and restricting the numbers of visitors at anyone time. In line with government advice all visitors will be required to wear a face covering in our venues, unless they have a valid exemption. We will also require people to book their visit in advance through the relevant venue website. For anyone unable to book online, bookings can be taken by phone. We are now in a position to confirm that all the County Council operated museum and heritage sites will re-open to the public week commencing 7th September. Charnwood Museum, which is run in partnership with Charnwood Borough Council, but operated by CBC re-opened on the 26th August. All arrangements will be kept under regular review. Details of individual site opening arrangements are as follows: Bosworth Battlefield Re-opens Monday 7th September Opening days: Sun to Weds, 10.30am to 4pm Pre-book via www.bosworthbattlefield.org.uk 1620s House and Garden Re-opens Thursday 10th September Opening days: Thurs – Sun, 10.30am – 4pm Pre-book via www.doningtonleheath.org.uk

We need to bring rates down further. That’s the route to avoiding further restrictions – and so it’s important we all play our part. If you’re meeting up with friends in the park, make sure you keep two metres apart and if you’re visiting the pub, follow the guidance on socialising. If people are coming round to your house, stick to the rules and if you’re travelling to work, adopt the same habits you would whilst you’re in work. This may sound simple – but the key to getting this under controls really is in all of our hands. And it still lies in maintaining social distancing, good hand hygiene and wearing face coverings where you need to.” Mike Sandys, Leicestershire county council director for public health People are urged to follow the guidance below: • If you have a high temperature, a new continuous cough or loss of smell/ taste, book a test • Wash your hands regularly • Wear a face covering in enclosed public spaces, including public transport – unless you have a good reason not to • If you’re meeting up with friends, keep two metres apart • If you’re contacted by test and trace, you must isolate for 14 days • Avoid car sharing, if possible Walk or cycle to school to help safe return to classrooms More than 90,000 Leicestershire students are returning to school - and the county council says getting them there safely is a top priority. So, the council is encouraging everyone to think about their travel options as part of practical guidance being made available about the return to the classroom. Additional public transport services will be running for students, but, they are also being encouraged to leave more time for the journey. Please check websites of bus companies. A similar message has gone out to parents and carers who take their children to school by their own transport. People are being asked to consider cycling, walking or, even, scooting as well as thinking differently about the school drop-off, parking with extra care near school sites or a few streets away. Also, if people are planning non-essential journeys around the ‘school run’, they are being asked to consider, if possible, travelling at a different time of day. Investment Fraud- Money Flipping Targetting Vulnerable Instagram Users During June 2020, Action Fraud received 164 reports from individuals falling victim to fraudulent investment schemes, commonly referred to as a ‘money flipping’ service offered by users on the Instagram social media platform. Fraudsters approach (or are approached by) victims via the instant messaging feature of the platform after advertising their service. They claim to only require an initial investment of a few hundred pounds which they say will be used to trade on the stock market or to buy and trade foreign currency (Forex) until they have multiplied the investment several times within a matter of days which is paid to the victim after a small commission is deducted for the service. In reality, once the initial investment has been transferred the victim is given a series of excuses as to why their money and ‘profits’ cannot be returned unless more money is sent. Eventually all contact is severed and the victim is blocked by the suspect. Victims are usually requested to send the money by bank transfer or through a cryptocurrency platform which means it is nearly impossible to retrieve. What you need to do: Unsolicited offers: A common tactic used by criminals is to promote “investment” opportunities via social media accounts, promising large returns from a small up-front payment. Never respond to any requests to send money, or have money transferred through your account, by someone you don’t know and trust. Investment opportunities: Don’t be rushed into making an investment. Remember, legitimate organisations will never pressure you into making a transaction on the spot.

Ratby Community Library

Ratby's Over 90’s Annual Coffee Morning

Article by Joan Burton

We're Back! We kicked off at 2pm 11th August and it's been great to see you all. After the long pause in opening, it really is a pleasure to say that our local library and community hub has re-opened at last. Once word was out we saw a very steady flow of visitors, most of whom took time to say how happy they were to be able to return their lockdown books, find their favourite authors and feel that life has returned to a bit of 'normality' at last. Our volunteers have all received advice on how to interact with the public in order to maintain social distance yet remain effective and active on your behalf. The library has had a deep clean and its shelves rearranged in order to allow for social distancing and one-way traffic. Some of you will have seen a change in how we operate our popular Crow Pie Cafe: tables and seating have had to be cordoned off to allow for better use of space but takeout hot and cold drinks are now available as are individually wrapped snacks– just ask at the checkout desk as usual. As visitor numbers have increased so too have the number of library open sessions. Opening Hours From 1st September: 2pm – 4pm Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. 10am – 12 Saturday. (If visitors have views on these session times please do make the volunteers aware – we really want to respond to our users as helpfully as is possible.)

Article by Brian Rayne

Very sorry to disappoint our older residents, but due to Government advice on social distancing during the Covid-19 outbreak, Ratby’s annual coffee morning for the over 90’s which is usually held in either August or September, has unfortunately had to be postponed for this year. Sending very best wishes to you all, keep safe, there will always be another year.

Of course, this is subject to local and national conditions and may change accordingly but it is our intention to do everything in our power to welcome visitors and gradually offer as much of the old services, as possible. The New System: On entry visitors are offered hand sanitizer fluid, and are asked to wear a face covering whilst in the building. If too many people want to enter than we may have to ask you to wait a little while (luckily we Brits have always been good at queueing.) Track and trace details will be asked for on entry. The library volunteers will assist with the return of books and, really importantly, borrowing from the well-stocked shelves. All returned stock will go into quarantine for 72 hours before being returned to the shelves. This also applies to the many donations of books we receive – look for them on our trolleys, select what you'd like to own and make a cash donation in the box provided. Children's and adult books can be borrowed for three weeks. (Late return fines have had an amnesty up to 5th September so please don't worry if your loans appear overdue – we all had a bit of a pause this summer.) We also have audio fiction and non-fiction books which are very popular, not forgetting our local history corner. Laptop computers, however, are not available until further notice. Parents may sad to see that, until further notice, we will not be hosting the incredibly popular Wriggly readers sessions but watch this space for updates. Parking in the library is free to library users as are the majority of the facilities but casual use of the lavatories by non-library visitors will not be allowed. Our cleaning standards are high and we aim to be careful, cautious and Covid clever! If using the library owned car park but not coming into the library, a voluntary donation would be welcome, thank you so much.

Coffee Morning Article by Joan Hawkins Ratby Parish Church Rooms Saturday19th September 10am to 12-30pm Due to the covid-19 we have a limited number of seats available. Due to the limited number of spaces you will need to book a seat. Please telephone Joan Hawkins 07545909868

What has not happened is proper consultation with residents living on Markfield Road as of today, there are less than 5 objections that have been submitted to the Case Officer. If 5 or more objections are received that would trigger the application being heard by the Planning Committee rather than delegated powers? We have said that as this is a major application then it should automatically go to Committee. If the Case Officer disagrees, then Chris, as Member of the Planning Committee and Ozzy as ward Councillor will call it in. We do know that LCC Highways are still not happy with the entrance / exit on that road and road widths on site. We will obviously keep residents informed of any changes. Objections to the design and layout can be sent to. Sharron Wilkinson. The Planning Department, Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, Hinckley Hub, Rugby Road, Hinckley, Leicestershire. LE10 0FR. Email. Sharron.Wilkinson@hinckley-bosworth. gov.uk Quote application 20/00711/REM | Approval of Reserved Matters Cawrey Ltd Planning Application 90 Houses Land South Of Markfield Road Ratby. Application Number 20/00462/FUL Planning History In November 2014 Cawrey Ltd had his application for 158 houses turned down by the Borough Councils Planning Committee. Following that Cawrey Ltd Appealed the decision. A planning Appeal Inspector who heard the Appeal in September 2015 Dismissed the Appeal on the 9th October 2015. Not content with that Cawrey Ltd Appealed the Inspectors decision under a Judicial Review at the High Court. The Judge ruled in favour of Planning Inspector and upheld the decision to refuse the application. Officers were approached in November 2018 by Cawrey Ltd regarding a further application and were told that officers would not support it. However Cawrey Ltd have decided to put in their application on a smaller scale. We are not allowed to hold a village meeting to discuss this application, like we did for their last application due to the ongoing pandemic. The Case Officer acknowledges that there is some harm but feels that this could possibly be overcome. Whilst HBBC does now have a 5 year Housing Supply that also needs adding too, we feel that the same objections still apply. Chris, as a Member of the Planning Committee, is forced to keep an open mind to this contentious application.

ChrisBorough Boothby Councillor

We have recently had the Borough Councils planning committee grant Permission for 168 houses on Markfield Road and it’s hard to believe that Cawrey Ltd would want to put further stain on our village that lacks the infrastructure for the 168 houses already granted. There again it seems profits are put before our community. Our village struggles every morning with queuing traffic trying to get out of our village. Ratby seems to be the cog in the centre of the villages that form the northern parishes with traffic passing through Ratby to get access to the A50/A46/A47 and M1. Not to mention the school places at the present time the children from the previous application will have to travel to Martinshaw Primary School in Groby. Ratby Primary school cannot be extended as John knows first-hand. So what is Cawrey Ltd Applying for? This is a full planning application for 88 houses and 2 bungalows. 36 properties will be affordable homes (40%) and 54 will be open market houses. A vehicular access will be created from Markfield Road. Public open space will be provided within the site along with the retention of hedgerows and a surface water balancing pond. A section of the footpath Route N63 will be rerouted. Objections can be sent to. Sharron Wilkinson. The Planning Department, Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, Hinckley Hub, Rugby Road, Hinckley, Leicestershire. LE10 0FR. Email. Sharron.Wilkinson@hinckley-bosworth. gov.uk Please do not forget to include the Planning Application number 20/00462/FUL The application land is clearly Part of the Burroughs and if granted will be the start of the loss of Ratby’s jewel in the crown You can object on planning reasons. Policy DM4 Safeguarding the Countryside and Settlement Separation E.g. The application site is outside the village boundary. DM4 requires that development in the Countryside does not have an adverse effect on the intrinsic value, beauty, open character and landscape character of the Countryside. Policy DM10 Development and Design E.g. Seeks to ensure that new development should complement or enhance the character of the surrounding area with regard to scale, layout, density, mass, design, materials and architectural features. Policy DM11 Protecting and Enhancing the Historic Environment E.g. Fields with Ridge and Furrow Policy DM13 Preserving the Boroughs Archaeology. E.g. Fields with Ridge and Furrow Policy DM17 Highways and Transportation. The Borough Council now has a 5 year housing supply E.g. Ratby suffers from heavy traffic and queuing through the village at both peak times and school times. Further objections can be made in relation to school places Ratby Primary school will be full after the granting of planning permission for the 168 houses earlier this year and children from those houses will have to travel to Groby and there was only one school that had vacancies when that application was herd. Is it fair to make young children walk to Groby? We suspect parent’s will no doubt drive their children to

school in the winter at a time we are trying to reduce our carbon footprint. Fly Tipping. We have been experiencing an increased amount of fly tipping within our ward of Ratby, Bagworth and Thornton. This is unacceptable behaviour. We appreciate people had issues with bulk items during lockdown, but that is no excuse for criminal behaviour. All of the County Council recycling and waste sites are now operating and Hinckley and Bosworth are collecting 3 bulky items for just £15. If you see anyone fly tipping please report it. Remember we are all paying to have it removed via our council tax. Thank you. Remembrance Parade 2020. It is with deep regret that Chris, as Parade Marshal for the village, has to announce the cancellation of this year’s Parade. This is because if the following reasons. Having taken advice from Govt, LCC and HBBC, and liaising with fellow Cllrs and the Rector Rev Dr Ed Bampton, we cannot put the public and local residents at risk. Public parades are banned, as we have a regular turnout at the War Memorial of some 500 people, social distancing cannot be observed, we cannot close Main St and as our Parade is the 4th largest in the Borough, people from outside the village regularly travel to come and watch it and take part. Also, the youth Organisations cannot Parade either. We know that Leicester City, Hinckley and Barwell have already cancelled theirs. However, we will still remember the fallen. On Sunday 8th November which is Remembrance Sunday this year, a service will be held in the Church, wreaths laid upon the Memorial Screen and one other, names of the fallen read, Union Flag to be lowered and a single bugler will play the last post. This will be by invitation only at the discretion of Rev Bampton. If residents wish to lay wreaths or crosses upon the War Memorial then you are free to do so but please observe social distancing. On Wednesday November 11th at 11am, a similar service will take place at the War Memorial. This, under the present circumstances with the Covid-19 Pandemic, influencing our day to day lives is the best we can do to honour them. Hope you understand. Lest we forget. Finally Chris has a new mobile number. It is 07306 390543. Once again, we take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support and remember we are only a phone call away. Regards Chris & Ozzy. Working for you.

Planning Application Submitted! Article by Ratby PPG

Building Services

As you might be aware from July’s Local Magazine, Ratby Surgery is currently in the process of applying for planning permission to build a new surgery on Desford Lane in Ratby. The practice have informed us that the planning application has been resubmitted to the council and should be available to see on the planning portal on the Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Councils webpage after this article goes to print. To review and support the application, you can either look at the Ratby Surgery Facebook page where a link will appear once it is available, or search for Hinckley and Bosworth Planning online, click on the Councils ‘view and comment on a planning application button’ and then in the key word search type Desford Lane and it should then appear. It will also be available via Ratby Parish Councils website under planning. We really hope that all residents of Ratby and Kirby Muxloe will be able to support the proposed medical centre for residents of both villages so that our GPs can continue to care for all residents closer to home with improved facilities. We have included updated images of the practice building provided by the practice after the changes requested by the council.

Message From Ratby Surgery Patient Participation Group (PPG} NHS Winter Flu Vaccination Programme This year because of the Covid-19 pandemic the Government is aiming to double its winter flu vaccination programme in England to 30 million people, with free vaccination for those aged 50 and over and children aged 11, This is an unprecedented drive to protect the NHS as there is a concern about the potential impact of an increase in coronavirus cases and seasonal flu overwhelming the health service. Experts believe that those at risk of flu are almost certainly at risk of Covid-19. Who is eligible for a free vaccine? • All people aged 65 and over from September • People aged 50 and over from November onwards, subject to further Government advice

Open For Re-Homing Cats And Dogs At Leicester & Leicestershire Animal Aid, (LAA), Huncote Article by Helen Wilber & Jane Walters Looking For "Forever Homes" You may not be aware that (with Coronavirus procedures in place), our animal charity is very much OPEN - both for those who have to give up their pet, and also for people who want to re-home a cat or dog from us to make him or her a part of their family. So please do get in contact with us if you would like to offer a pet a loving "forever home". However; please note - currently only Staff can access the actual kennels and cattery areas, and visitors cannot walk around the rear part of the site (where the animals live). There are special re-homing procedures now in operation and you would need to contact us first, before visiting.

• Pregnant women • People with certain health conditions, including kidney disease, asthma and heart disease • Carers and those in care homes • Frontline health and social care workers • Children over six months with a long-term health condition • Children aged two and three • Children in primary school • Children aged 11 by 31 August 2020 • Anyone living in a household with somebody on the NHS shielded patient list Children aged 11 are being offered the vaccine because it they will be going into their first year of secondary school. When will the flu vaccine available at the surgery ? The vaccines for preschool children and those aged 65 and over has just arrived. Vaccines for those younger than 65 but at risk will be available in October. Vaccines for those who are aged 50 and over but not in a higher risk group will be likely available in November, but this is subject to further Government advice closer to the time. Unfortunately due to Coronavirus, the surgery must book appointments rather than having a walk in service. How to book your vaccination Please contact the surgery by phone to book in for your flu jab/nasal flu unless you are in the 50-64 age group category.

Re-Homing A Dog From LAA We appreciate that you may fall in love with a dog at first sight and want to take it home straight away, but to make sure both you and the dog have a lifetime of happiness, we need to make sure you are the right match for each other. The first step is to complete one of our Interested Parties Forms so that we know a little bit about your lifestyle, and we like to meet the whole family. If you are a good match, we will arrange a time for you, the rest of your family, including children and existing dogs, to meet the potential new addition, to ensure the whole family is happy with the decision. We will require a minimum of two meetings, but depending on the dog, more meetings than this may be required. www.leicesteranimalaid.org.uk/rehoming-process-dogs/how-do-igo-about-rehoming-a-dog-from-laa Re-Homing A Cat From LAA * We're always pleased when someone wants to offer a good home to one of our lovely cats. As with dog re-homing, due to Coronavirus, we have changed the way we operate for the remainder of 2020, so you won't be able to look round the Cattery to view our cats as you would do under normal circumstances. We will ask you to fill in one of our Interested Parties Forms, so that we know a little bit about your lifestyle, and we like to meet the whole family. You can complete the online form or telephone the Huncote Centre on 01455 888 257 to tell us what kind of cat you are looking for. The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group Article by Judith Upton

The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group generally meets 6 times a year, and membership is open to all. Visitors are always welcome to all our meetings, which usually take place in St. Bartholomew’s Church Hall, Main St., Kirby Muxloe and start at 7.30 pm. Details of the dates of meetings, together with the topics that will be covered, are shown on the notice board in Kirby Muxloe Library and on our website, which is www. kirbymuxloelocalhistorygroup.org Unfortunately, due to the Corona virus (Covid-19), all our meetings are cancelled until further notice. This includes our new “Memories” meetings, held at the Library meeting room each month. We will continue to support “Your Local” magazine with our monthly articles. Stay safe, follow government advice and if you are out and about, practice social distancing. For the latest details about meetings, see our website. Kirby Muxloe Parish Church of St Bartholomew’s

"The new font at St Bart's Church Kirby Muxloe, designed and made by Peter Cooper". Picture courtesy of Janet Carpenter

Kirby Muxloe is known to have had a church since the year 1168. It is not clear when the first church on the site was built, but it is thought that some type of building might have stood there in Anglo-Saxon times. This period ended in 1066 with the Norman Conquest. However, there is no mention of a church in the Domesday Book, which was a complete survey of the land ordered by William the Conqueror and published in 1086. Little is known about St Bartholomew, except that the name means “son of Talmai” and that he was one of the twelve Apostles. St. Bartholomew’s Day is celebrated on the 24th of August.

The early church would usually be accompanied by a “Hall” and it is thought that the old foundations of the hall can still be seen in the grounds of our ruined castle. The present church was constructed in around the late 13th or early 14th century. This can be confirmed by the type of masonry used, although it is thought that the walls may still hold some of the stones from the earlier church. The church was restored in the mid 19th century by Henry Goddard of Leicester. Henry Goddard was an architect and initially based his business in Leicester. Further restoration and changes have been made in the last century, followed by wheelchair access and a new heating system in the last few years. Some of the rear pews were also removed to enable the back part of the church to be used for various social activities. Unfortunately, an antique square font was broken up in the early 1900’s when the small gallery was demolished at the west end of the church. It was replaced by a stone font, which was used until 2015. This font now stands in the churchyard, close to the new entrance to the church. Now,

18 | www.openboxpromotions.co.uk/news

a new font with a wooden base mounted on a plinth, which can be moved easily, has been installed. The font, designed and crafted by Peter Cooper, contains a time capsule in the base. When the font was constructed, the capsule was filled with items relevant to the present day; it was then sealed and will be opened up at some time in the future. What will our ancestors think of a 2010 mobile flip phone! It is thought that the original church was smaller than the one we know today. This is evident as there are remains of a piscina (a shallow basin with a drainage hole used for washing communion vessels) on the right-hand side of the church near to the front pew. Usually the piscina was situated near to the altar, so perhaps the first chapel consisted of just the nave, and the chancel was added at a later date. Piscinas were quite common in the 13th and 14th century but rarely before. In the book “The Description of Leicester containing matters of Antiquitye, Historye, Armorye and Genealogy” written by the celebrated historian and author William Burton in 1622, it is said that there were several coats of arms displayed in the glass in the windows of the Kirby Muxloe church. The coats of arms represented a number of prominent local families. Burton, who was born in Lindley, Higham on the Hill, showed a great interest and knowledge of the churches of Leicestershire. Sadly, all the coats of arms have now disappeared. The churchyard is of great interest to any students of genealogy or researching their family tree. In 1974, it was decided that for maintenance purposes, some of the older gravestones should be removed. Fortunately, the well-known local historian Jonathan Wilshere embarked on a complete survey of the churchyard before the removals occurred. In his booklet “Monumental Inscriptions in KIRBY MUXLOE Churchyard”, he lists all the names and dates of burials. He noted that over a quarter of the churchyard was to be affected. He tells us that “some effort was made to preserve any slate stones removed, by resiting, including laying stones, from west of the church, flat on the ground in the west-north-west section”. He also stated that “further clearance was mooted in the summer of 1976”. Jonathan also recorded the complete inscriptions on each gravestone, and included the type of stone used. These details have not been published and although the village Local History Group has access to Jonathan’s archive, these notes have not yet been recovered. Do you know the story attached to the large yew tree which stands opposite the main door (now seldom used) of the church? This tree has a very interesting history. In around 1930, Dr Garfit, Kirby Muxloe’s well remembered doctor (especially to the older residents), made a visit to Scotland and visited the ruins of Dryburgh Abbey, which was founded in 1150. In the grounds of Dryburgh there is an ancient yew tree, said to be between 700 and 900 years old. The tree was brought over by the monks from Normandy. Dr Garfit picked up some seeds and brought them back to our village. When one of the seeds sprouted, with the permission of the vicar at the time, it was transplanted into the churchyard. Initially, it was surrounded by tall metal railings in order to give it the protection needed to survive. Next time you visit the church, take a look at the tree, there is a plaque at the base which tells us that the tree was planted in 1934. N.B. please accept my apologies- I mistakenly wrote that the cycle speedway track on the reccy was for “motorcycles”. Of course, it was not, it was for pedal bicycles. Thanks to “anon” for correcting my mistake.

Things that you will notice: • The Library looks much more spacious – we have had to move all non-essential items out so that there is plenty of room for social distancing. • The counter now has some very posh glass screens for your protection and the protection of volunteers. You will need to open the books you want to borrow at the counter so that we can scan them, and likewise with your Library card. • Staff will be wearing masks, rubber gloves and possibly face shields. We do look a bit weird but it’s still us underneath it all! • Windows will be open at all times to provide good ventilation for the Library. • There is a one-way system in operation around the shelves, again so that distancing can be maintained. Things that you will need to do: • You MUST wear a face mask when you come into the Library, unless of course you have an exemption for health reasons. • You will be greeted at the door by a member of staff, who will explain the way around the Library and what you need to do. • You MUST sanitise your hands on entry – there is a sanitiser near the door. • You will be asked to give your name and telephone number on entry, for track and trace purposes. Your time of arrival will be recorded, as will your time of leaving. Be assured that this information will be kept securely and destroyed after 21 days. • As we can only have 6 customers in the Library at any one time, it is possible that in busy periods you may need to wait outside for a short period. Things that you need to know: • During September, we are open on Tuesday afternoons, 2.00 5.00, and Saturday mornings, 10.00 – 1.00. We hope to add Thursday afternoons in October, subject to LCC approval. • You are of course very welcome to browse books to see what you want to borrow. The thing to remember is that if you do touch a book, DON’T put it back on the shelves. Do put it in the crate or box at the end of the shelves so that we can quarantine the books for 72 hours. • We have a lot more books than normal in the Library, due to the transport system still not working and we cannot therefore return books to other Libraries. Also, the new books that we have ordered from our own funds are now in the Library. All in all, there is a really good choice. • Fines will be restarted as of September 5th, so make sure you have returned all your books by then. • The book drop is now open. • We have a number of books that have been on hold since March – they are still available, so do drop in to collect. Things that, sadly, we cannot do – yet! • We cannot serve refreshments. • We cannot open the public toilet, for Health and Safety reasons, except in the event of a genuine emergency. It will take time for us to build up all our activities to where we were before all this happened, but rest assured that we are working on it.

You Have To Start Somewhere Article by Kirby Lad

When I retire the one thing that I’ll have is lots of time But how to fill it, that’s the thing, when I am past my prime I could relax, sit in my chair and watch a load of telly Lie in all hours and get up late, have lunch up at the deli But friends have told me that it's clear my time is not infinite They say get out, find interests, don’t waste a single minute (ouch) It's hard to think when there’s so much on Yesterday and Dave I think I need some hobbies, my mind and health to save But what’s out there, how do I choose, how do I make a start? Not practical, no good with wood, and even worse at art Beekeeping wouldn’t work for me, I’ve previously been stung (Though by a wasp I think it was, when I was very young) Think back, what have I tried before, that could now fill my days Well winemaking was good but always left me in a daze What I need now is something which will keep my thinking clear So brewing jars of wine is out (that also goes for beer) I’ve tried my hand at knitting, and I’ve made some pottery But didn’t get on all that well, so they won’t do for me I’ve heard that exercise and sport will keep your health at par But football, rugby, boxing? No that’s just a bridge too far I’ve got no head for heights so mountaineering would be barred Perhaps something that’s less intense, something not quite so hard There are some more sophisticated sports it seems to me Like bowling, badminton or tennis, even archery Or I could join the gym, lift weights, then cycle for a bit It’s true, I’ve seen they’ve got a simply vast array of kit Or maybe running marathons across the streets and parks And with all of that effort I am sure I’d get full marks But having thought it through, and just to help reduce the stress Perhaps I’ll settle for a game of dominoes or chess

A Weighty Issue? Article by Gary Trickett

If recent headlines are to be believed, subscriptions to online slimming clubs are at an all-time high. Spoiler alert: diets, quite simply, do not work. The key to a healthy lifestyle is exercise. It increases the rate at which the body breaks down foods, so less of your food intake is stored as fat reserves. Try to exercise for at least 10 minutes a day and as your fitness levels rise, increase your activity accordingly. Feeling sluggish or bloated? Make sure your diet is healthy and balanced; faddy diets that cut out an entire food group can cause all sorts of problems, including deficiencies, cravings and bloating. A varied, balanced diet should include plenty of fruit and vegetables, plenty of wholegrain foods (bread, pasta and rice), some proteinrich foods and some dairy foods. Your diet should also be low in fat, especially saturated fat, salt and sugar, and high in fibre (18g to 35g a day), and drink between 1.5 to 2 litres of water a day to keep your digestive system healthy.

A good prebiotic supplement should help to enhance digestion and improve your metabolism. Taken before a meal it can help to stimulate the secretion of digestive enzymes throughout the whole digestive system, which helps to reduce the rotting of food residues and resulting gases, making it very difficult for unfriendly bacteria to gain a hold. Once unfriendly bacteria have been discouraged and friendly bacteria are given the environment they like, digestion and metabolism improve, and energy levels increase. Try A. Vogel’s Molkosan Fruit diluted in a large glass of water, twice daily. Don’t go more than 4 waking hours without eating. This helps to keep your blood sugar steady and cravings at bay. Craving Essence from Jan de Vries may also help. It provides flower essences to help maintain the motivation to make daily progress and keep a positive self image.
