The Village Writers A Ball of String Written by Cherryl Read
The new ball of string crisp grey - almost white, pristine, untouched. Neatly wound, it’s long strand criss-crosses evenly making a squat, almost-round sphere with its end tucked out of sight into the dark hollow in the middle of the shape. Or is that its invisible beginning? The beginning that, once released from the small, dark cave will unravel the ball from within and allow the string to become useful. To be what it was meant to be. To be used and re-used. Romantic notions of brown paper packages tied up with strings promotes thoughts of a curious or excited receiver finding the bow too tightly knotted to be undone quickly, so pulling and sliding it this way and that against the brown, shiny paper encasing the parcel and then as soon as practicable tugging it off, momentarily casting it aside whilst interest in it is suspended and focus is on unwrapping the brown paper and then to oh and ah over the content revealed. Later to wistfully retrieve the string, more patience now to untie the knots and bows and carefully wind it around the index and middle finger to make a neat loop, the last few inches being drawn round the middle of the loop to secure it before dropping it into the bits and bobs drawer to be forgotten, perhaps for ever. Or maybe retrieved, used to tie another parcel, its ends (or beginnings) cut and discarded or once again wound into a smaller loop to go back into the really useful drawer for an indeterminate length of time. By now the string looks grubby, its ends frayed, perhaps a tight knot or two making little bumps along its thin, strong line. Its use now is for more utilitarian purposes - it’s had its time of glory in securing precious parcels - and is found at the allotment or in the garden, tying blackberry canes to the fence or holding wayward rose shrubs to stakes. At the end of the season it is worn, weathered, grey and soft, crumbling to shreds, its strength faded. It is tossed into the compost bin to be digested by worms.

Twelve months ago I do recall The same thing happened to us all We woke one morning from our bunks And found that all our clothes had shrunk Perhaps the washing water’s hotter If that’s the case then I’ve just gotta Make a note for next New Year To be more careful with my gear Some say we've just indulged too much Scoffed too much Christmas pud and such Mince pies and all those nuts and sweets Schooners of port and other treats But, I protest, it's no such thing OK I may have had a fling But moderation’s more my profile Not greedy that’s just not my lifestyle But then again I don’t like waste Not one to throw food out in haste That bit of surplus Christmas pud I’ll clear it up that would be good

Latest Coronavirus Update for Leicestershire We are now in Lockdown since I last wrote I hope this guide helps residents. Summary: what you can and cannot do during the national lockdown You must stay at home. The single most important action we can all take is to stay at home to protect the NHS and save lives. You should follow this guidance immediately. The law will be updated to reflect these new rules. Leaving home You must not leave, or be outside of your home except where necessary. You may leave the home to: • shop for basic necessities, for you or a vulnerable person • go to work, or provide voluntary or charitable services, if you cannot reasonably do so from home • exercise with your household (or support bubble) or one other person, this should be limited to once per day, and you should not travel outside your local area. • meet your support bubble or childcare bubble where necessary, but only if you are legally permitted to form one • seek medical assistance or avoid injury, illness or risk of harm (including domestic abuse) • attend education or childcare - for those eligible Colleges, primary and secondary schools will remain open only for vulnerable children and the children of critical workers. All other children will learn remotely until February half term. Early Years settings remain open. Higher Education provision will remain online until mid February for all except future critical worker courses. Ratby Community Library Wishes You A Happy New Year Article by Joan Burton
Want to know the good news? We're open again! We can't tell how good it is to know that it is safe to open the library again and start greeting all our friends and visitors. We see many different visitors over the week: regular borrowers, the local school children, parents and carers of younger children and of course, those who volunteer to collect and return books for their neighbours who can't get out as much as they used to. So welcome back, all of you. After Christmas our opening hours, starting Tuesday 5th January will be: 10am – 12 Monday, Saturday. 2pm – 4pm Tuesday, Thursday. Closed Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. We have changed from Wednesday morning to Monday morning as a result of public requests. We are always happy to listen to public opinion and will respond if possible. Exciting news is that contractors have been hard at work stripping out the old kitchen and preparing for a refit; at the moment, due to the ongoing work, we can't provide even our takeaway drinks but just wait... We have an excellent stock on the shelves for borrowing but also a variety of donated books of all types which are for sale – any cash donation welcome! The beautiful Bradgate Calendar is in stock and at £5 is very good value. On re-opening please be assured that all Covid-19 regulations will be followed assiduously and, as ever, the volunteers will be happy to assist with helping visitors find just what they're looking for. Here's hoping that 2021 brings us peace, prosperity and good health!

Meeting others You cannot leave your home to meet socially with anyone you do not live with or are not in a support bubble with (if you are legally permitted to form one). You may exercise on your own, with one other person, or with your household or support bubble. You should not meet other people you do not live with, or have formed a support bubble with, unless for a permitted reason. Stay 2 metres apart from anyone not in your household. Published 4 January 2021 Early Christmas Present for Rural Pubs Money from a brand new initiative supporting struggling rural pubs is being awarded to landlords across Leicestershire, just days after the scheme launched. Leicestershire County Council is offering a one-off payment of £1,000 to support small village pubs which are unable to open their doors over the festive period. Around 100 have already applied, the first eight pubs are being awarded cash and another 20 being put in the post. Launched on Friday (18 Dec), the scheme – thought to be the only one of its kind in the country - aims to keep people in jobs, maintain the role of the pub as a community hub and help them to diversify by providing extra services for residents. I have made all 4 pubs in my ward aware and totally supported their applications. Hospitality has been dealt a big blow during the pandemic. And the impact is even more acute when you consider the lifeline pubs can provide within communities. That’s why the County Council has moved quickly to bring in support. It’s hoped that the scheme will support up to 200 community pubs and is backed by major trade body, the British Beer and Pub Association, which represents around 20,000 of the country’s pubs. Budget proposals 2021-25 - have your say We're encouraging residents, businesses, parish councils and partner organisations to give their views on our latest four-year budget proposals by completing a short survey. Our latest plan shows the difference between income and expenditure will reach £92m in 2025 meaning that significant savings will be required. Investment in services including children and family services, adult social care and environment in transport is proposed as well as a £450m capital pot to spend on infrastructure and a 1.99 per cent rise in Council Tax. You can comment from 16 December 2020 until 17 January 2021 by going to Leicestershire County Councils web site, and follow Have your Say. You can also follow the following link. www.leicestershire.gov.uk/about-thecouncil/council-spending/budget-proposals-2021-25 If you would like to request printed materials, or send in additional feedback, please email: priorities@leics.gov.uk or call 0116 305 6274 Ivanhoe Trail Issues I have arranged for the Ivanhoe trail to have the leaf fall cleared off the path between Taverner Drive and the M1 Bridge. However I need to give a gentle reminder to the small minority of dog walkers, who are not picking up after their dog. Please pick up after you dog it only takes a minute. Remember you can put your dog’s poo in both the dog bins and council waste bins thank you for your co-operation. Advance Notice of a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order A temporary traffic regulation order (TTRO) is to be made for the following location: Stamford Street, Ratby. The purpose of the TTRO is to allow Leicestershire County Council to facilitate the replacement of a street lighting column and any other associated work to the highway. The TTRO will incorporate a temporary parking restriction. The duration of the restriction is not anticipated to exceed a period of 1 day commencing on the 21st January 2021. Scam Alert - COVID-19 Vaccine Scam Text I was contacted by a local resident after they received a Scam Text Message allegedly telling them how to book their vaccine appointment the link from the text looked like a genuine Government Website. I checked through the links and soon realised it was a scan immediately alerting Trading Standards. They put out the below warning. I am always here to help if in doubt don’t click on anything. Please be careful. Criminals are taking advantage of the COVID-19 vaccine rollout through a convincing scam text to steal people’s personal and financial details. The text contains a link that leads to a convincing fake NHS website with an application form. It asks for your bank/card details in order to ‘check identity’. The NHS will not ask for payment. Below is a copy of the Text message. NHS: We have identified that you eligible to apply for your vaccine. For more information and to apply. Follow here: uk-application-form.com

We still have volunteers who are wonderful and as key workers, they are allowed out to provide these key services to those who need help under lockdown. RATBY PRIMARY SCHOOL Christmas Food Bank Appeal Thank you to our parents and staff for their generous donations to our Reverse Advent Appeal. Every day a different year group brought in a suggested item for the Churches Together Community Support Team, who are collecting for people in the local community who are in need. We had contributions of tins, toiletries, dried goods but to name a few. These will be distributed before Christmas, and will support the most vulnerable families in our area.
Decorations Day Ratby Primary School celebrated the lead up to Christmas with our annual Decorations Day on Friday 4th December 2020. Each class spent the day making some super creative decorations to display at home this Christmas. The enthusiasm and creativity displayed by all year groups was incredible and the children worked very hard to create their own unique designs for each of their decorations. We all had a very fun-filled day and got to showcase our fantastic art and design skills. We wish you all a very merry Christmas!
STEM Challenges We have had a great week taking part in some STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and Science challenges this week! Our Foundation stage children tested liquids to see which would make the ginger bread man dissolve the quickest, and our Year 1’s tested ice decorations to see which conditions affected how quickly they would melt. Year 2 were challenged to make the tallest snowman out of marshmallows and spaghetti. In lower KS2, Year 3 had to create 3D present shapes out of midget gems and cocktail sticks and in Year 4 they used the same materials to make trees and chairs for the Christmas teddies. In Upper KS2, Year 5 made Christmas scenes using recyclable materials and Year 6 made Christmas Sculptures. Well done to all the children for using their imagination, being creative and making great predictions! We also would like to congratulate Ayla in Year 5, who won a runner up prize in the Glass Guardians Science competition!
Growth Mindset In Year 6 Since we started back at school at the start of the academic year, we have been teaching the children about the difference between having a fixed and a growth mindset. The children have responded really well to these lessons. It is a very powerful idea that intelligence is expandable and is not fixed or static. This concept is encouraging the children to become more resilient and take more ownership of their own learning. We are very impressed with the positive and hard-working attitude that the children have had during the Autumn term. They are certainly showing their growth mindset.
Nativity 2020 Christmas Jumper Day On Friday 11th December, we all got to go to school in our Festive Christmas jumpers, to help raise money for a charity called ‘Save the Children’. We were all asked to donate a small amount of money and it was lovely to see everyone in their colourful jumpers. To make it extra special, it was Christmas dinner day, which was yummy. We raised a fantastic £271! By Riah, Year 5

The Nativity is a big part of Key Stage 1 in the Autumn Term. Therefore, we couldn’t have a year without performing for our parents and classes. The whole school learnt songs in their bubbles and we created a virtual Nativity. Year 1 acted out the traditional First Christmas and Year 2 narrated each scene. This was edited together to make a fantastic performance which we shared with our families at home. The staff even added their own version of Slade’s, ‘Merry Christmas Everybody!’ A huge THANK YOU to Reverend Bampton and the Church for paying for a fantastic performance of ‘Hark- A Nativity Story’ by The Saltmine Theatre Company. The children really enjoyed the performance.

Flight Lt Reid with his wife and mother after receiving the D.F.C.at Buckingham Palace. Photo courtesy of Caroline Elton
Major Reid and Reid and Sigrist of Desford Aerodrome Flight Lieutenant George Hancock Reid was born in Stonehouse, Devon in 1889. He was the son of Florence Hancock and George Ewen Reid, an Able Seaman. His parents married in 1885, but divorced just after George junior was born. It is not clear what happened to his biological father after the divorce but by 1911, George Hancock Reid was living with his mother Florence and step father Walter Epton and family in Camberwell, London. He was aged 22 and was an engineering student. Flight Lt George Hancock Reid was one of the first flyers to be awarded the D.F.C. (Distinguished Flying Cross) when it was established in 1918, just after the end of WWI. A report in the London Gazette on 21st September 1918 is as follows - “As a pilot of a short seaplane he was engaged in a raid on Zepplin sheds in Schleswig-Holstein (north west Germany) on 25 March 1916, in which he displayed great courage, ability and resource under the most trying circumstances, which included flying in a snow storm and immersion for over 3 hours in the sea”. Flight Lt. Reid was accompanied on this mission by Chief Petty Officer Richard Mullins and we understand that while returning to the Vindex, his seaplane carrier, Flight Lieutenant Reid attempted the rescue of another pilot stranded in the North sea. It is said that he plucked the pilot from the stranded seaplane and strapped him to an outer part of his aircraft, then headed back to the Vindex. Unfortunately, before he

reached the safety of his carrier, he was forced to land on the water again, due to engine trouble in the snowstorm. All he could do was to taxi back in the direction of the Vindex, but he was soon spotted and surrounded by a motor boat carrying German soldiers and two German seaplanes, which landed alongside him. He was a prisoner of war until the Armistice in 1918, despite trying to escape several times, including jumping from a fast moving train. George Reid studied engineering and was one of a few people to be awarded a Whitworth Scholarship, a prestigious award granted to engineering students. He married his wife Eva Sweetman, in 1915, at All Saint’s, Springfield, Essex and began his post-war career by renting a bench in the Hawker factory in Richmond, in order to work on his own designs and inventions. In 1928, the private company of Reid and Sigrist was formed by George Hancock Reid and Frederick Sigrist who, at the time, was a joint managing director of H.G. Hawker Engineering. Initially the company had premises in Hampstead, North London, then Kingston on Thames and in 1935, New Malden in Surrey. Major Reid had already invented and produced several important pieces of apparatus for the aviation industry. One of his most famous inventions was the “turn and bank” indicator, which when further developed and was used by the R.A.F. from 1937 onwards. With WWII looming, the company applied to run one of the new Civilian Flying schools, set up to train new pilots. In order to be successful in this new venture, they were required to posess an airfield. Therefore, still in 1935, they purchased Desford Aerodrome and some surrounding land. By the end of the year, the new Flying Training School was opened by Vicount Swinton of Masham. By 1937, with the ever more focus on a war, the school expanded to train R.A.F. Volunteer Reserve pilots. With the commencement of WWII, Reid and Sigrist were recruited into the Civilian Repair Organisation by the Ministry of Defence, to repair damaged R.A.F. aircraft. Many people in the village worked for the company in the war years and beyond. Major Reid and his family moved to The Cliffe, in Kirby Fields in 1935. Their household comprised of James, the butler, Bella, the cook, Marion the housemaid and Mary the kitchenmaid. Their chauffeur was a Mr Graham of Kirby Muxloe whilst Mrs Graham looked after Mrs Reid’s wardrobe and attended to the laundry. During WWII, they certainly led a busy life. Whilst Major Reid was managing Director of Reid and Sigrist, his wife Eva was in charge of all female personnel, R.A.F. auxilliary accommodation and all messing arrangements. During the bombing of 1940, a string of High Explosive bombs dropped in the field behind the Cliffe. According to the A.R.P. report book on Sunday November 24th, Major Reid phoned the report post to say that “a bomb crater in the Tyrrell’s garden was full of water and ‘sissling’”. The Tyrell family lived at Holmwood, Holmwood Drive, Kirby Fields. As the Major could not raise any A.R.P.’s at the time, he decided to go and inspect the bomb himself. However, by this time Mr Pick, whose house on Hinckley road was one of the Report Posts, had arrived, assessed the bomb and decided that it was indeed an unexpoloded bomb. Mr Tyrell’s house and the gardener’s cottage were evacuated. Unfortunately, we do not have any records to confirm that it was a UXB. It has also been said that not all the H.E. bombs that fell on Blood’s Hill and surrounding area exploded that night - are they still in the ground? We may never know. At the end of WWII, the company received a request from the British Government to make the Reid Camera. This was based on designs of the Leica camera, made in Germany. The camera went on sale in 1951. At some point Reid and Sigrist (possibly in the 1960’s/’70’s, after they were taken over by Decca) had offices on Scudamote Road, Braunstone. Major Reid and his wife retired in 1955/56 and lived out the rest of their lives in St Saviour, Jersey. Major Reid died in 1969. Information courtesy of Caroline Elton and Island wiki.

Ratby Surgery Patient Participation Group Article by Joan Hawkins
Coronavirus vaccinations You may be aware that Ratby Surgery was one of the 1st practices to start immunising their patients along with , Desford, Newbold Verdon and Earl Shilton practices The practices worked together to arrange for patients to be vaccinated in Earl Shilton's premises as they were the largest out of the four practices and so safest for patients. This made it possible for our practice to be able to offer Covid vaccination to everyone over 80 years old from W/C 14th December. Uptake was very good despite the travelling issue and with some support from volunteers the surgery were able to make sure all those that wanted it could get there. All of these patients have since received a 2nd dose.
