Hinckley & District Parkinson’s Branch
Back In The Band Room
We are told that every hour in the UK someone is informed that they have Parkinson’s Disease. The majority of these are over the age of 50 but many start to experience the symptoms before they are 40. Although not everyone reading this will personally know someone with Parkinson’s, it is likely that they will know of a personality with the disease. Names from the past include John Betjemann, Pope John Paul II, Billy Graham and Muhammad Ali, while more recently you may have heard about Jeremy Paxman, Ozzy Osbourne or Billy Connolly. Breakfast television programmes have recently carried reports about Graham Norton’s father or Rugby star Mike Tindall’s father being diagnosed with Parkinson’s
As Covid-19 restrictions are eased we are pleased to be able to resume rehearsing for each of the bands albeit in small groups.

The first opportunity for us all to be heard again playing in public will be on 24th July at the bandroom and adjoining Totem Pole field. This will be a special occasion for Sheila Allen and the beginners group, affectionately known as the ‘Tooters’, as they perform for the first time in public. In May we were delighted to receive a grant from Norwood Press for the purchase of new music some of which will be performed at this event. Hopefully, the relaxation of the Covid-19 rules will allow us to meet up in person and there can be no better way to do this than to listen to one of our bands.

It was Scottish comedian Billy Connolly who objected to Parkinson’s being referred to very negatively as “an incurable disease” when it should be thought of as a disease being investigated by scientists to find a cure.
August 8th - Mid Band, Melton Park August 22nd - Senior Band, LFE Parish Hall 3pm
The Hinckley Group are still not able to confidently say when their meetings can safely resume, but when they do a lot of new folk are expected to come along and, rest assured, all will be made most welcome. Thanks to articles like this one in your local magazine more people have now realised that help and support are very much available locally. Your Consultant or the Parkinson’s Nurse may only see you once or twice in the year but the local group and its members are here all through the year, willing to offer friendship, help, support and advice. So do not worry that you will be the only newcomer at a meeting or activity as there should be quite a few of you.

Hopefully in the near future, once a month, those suffering from Parkinson’s and their families or carers will meet together at the Mary Forryan Centre, on Leicester Road in Hinckley - a social gathering, often with a speaker for information or entertainment, offering a chance for people to get together to discuss problems, ways of easing difficulties, to plan group visits out or just chat! There will be a weekly exercise class called ‘Challenge PD’ [currently on Zoom], a monthly informal afternoon tea at the restaurant conservatory in Dobbies at Stapleton, Nordic walking on Burbage Common and a weekly Choir Group. Other ideas for suitable activities would be welcomed. To contact the Hinckley & District Parkinson’s Group give our Chairperson Janet Kavanagh a ring on 07932615233, or watch out for details of the resumption of meetings in this magazine. So don’t let Parkinson’s dictate how you live your life, come along and join the Hinckley Group and see the benefit of being part of a group for yourself.

Leicester Forest East Parish Council Achievements Of The Council During The Last 12 Months Article by Holly Mann
Protecting Your Family’s Inheritance Article by Klara Hesling
Our frontline staff follow Government guidelines for visiting you in your home and they are in the vaccination program with second course completed. LevLaw Ltd remains here for you. Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually.
1. New Play Equipment - Kings Walk Park The Parish Council secured s. 106 funding to fund part of the new installation of Play Equipment on Kings Walk Park. The rest of the money came from the Precept. Much of the old, wooden, equipment had been removed due to vandalism and the Parish Council decided to replace it with new, sturdier equipment. 2. Resurfacing of Boyers Park All items of Play Equipment on Boyers Play Park have been re-surfaced with grass carpeting. This was to replace the existing surfacing which was well-worn and did not allow for sufficient drainage of the park, meaning equipment could not be used after wet spells. The new surfacing provides extra draining so the Park will be usable for more of the year. 3. Elm Tree - Forest East Park Goscote Nurseries, very kindly, donated this Elm Tree to the Parish Council, it has been planted on Forest East Park. The hope is that this tree, along with the many others the Nursery donated to other organisations, will go some way to replacing those trees lost to Dutch Elm Disease. 4. Path around Playing Fields A new path has been installed around the perimeter of the playing fields on Forest East Park. The field is now more user-friendly and can be used by dogwalkers, cyclists, those with pushchairs and walkers. 5. Solar Panels With a view to ‘doing it’s bit’ towards tackling climate change, the Parish Council has installed Solar Panels on the Parish Hall roof. The project took just a few days to complete and is already generating electricity! 6. Hanging Baskets and Flower Planters This year, the Parish Council has changed provider for hanging baskets and flower tubs and has saved money in the process. I hope you’ll agree, the planters and hanging baskets look fantastic!
But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased’s share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children’s inheritance is protected. This last point can be particular interest to couples who have come together and have children with different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensuring that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property, they can still sell the property and the proceeds to be used to purchase a new property, the terms of the Trust remain over the new property.

T: 0116 2394336 M: 07808585825 E: ozzyoshea@hotmail.com Road Closure Markfield Road Ratby. I have been made aware that Millar Homes are putting in traffic calming along Markfield Road Ratby starting A50 on the 12th July for a period of three weeks. There will be no through road to Ratby from Markfield. This is part RATBY LANE of their planning permission granted by Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council. The road will be closed between Whittington Drive and the Miller Site Entrance whilst they install two speed tables and speed humps. The road will close on Monday 12th July for 3 weeks. Residents of Markfield Road will be able to access their houses via the service road. I am not happy about this closure as it will greatly inconvenience residents and cause the Arriva bus service to be suspended around Whittington Drive and Charnwood whilst works are carried out. Highways have made MARKFIELD ROAD Millar Homes reduce the closure time from their requested 6 weeks to 3 weeks and as such the contactors are putting extra gangs working on the two speed tables at the same time. As we go to print I am pressing for the Markfield Road and Whittington Drive junction speed table to be get extra priority, in order that this junction can be opened up to allow access to Whittington Drive via Markfield Road. This is not ideal and I appreciate resident’s anger and concern after taking your calls. Unfortunately this work has to be done as its part of the planning application. Highways are doing their very best to minimise the disruption to residents. Residents will know that both I and Chris strongly objected to this development at the planning committee meeting but were outnumbered by the ruling administration. A diversion has been put in place to take traffic away from Markfield Road. National Bus Strategy engagement survey. We’ll soon be drafting a Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) for Leicestershire, in collaboration with the county’s bus operators. This stems from the government’s recently published National Bus Strategy (Bus Back Better), which requires all English local transport authorities to work with operators to come up with bold plans for improving their local bus services and encouraging more people to use them. The government has pledged £3 billion in funding across the country to help deliver these plans, and Leicestershire is aiming to secure a fair share of that funding. As an important input to the plan, we want to find out what you think would improve local bus services and what would make you use local buses more. Let us know your views. We're keen to hear from people who already use buses and from those who currently don’t. We also want to hear from public, private and voluntary organisations who have an interest in making our bus services work better. The closing date to complete the engagement survey is Friday 30 July 2021. If you're able to, please complete the above questionnaire online to help us keep costs down. Please use the following link or visit the County Councils website and go to consultations. www.leicestershire.gov.uk/have-your-say/current-consultations/national-busstrategy-engagement-survey Paper copies of the questionnaire are available on request by calling the Customer Service Centre on 0116 305 0001 (option 9).

If you need help to complete the survey, or have any questions about the engagement exercise, please email nbs@leics.gov.uk or telephone 0116 305 0001 (option 9) Carers strategy review spring-summer 2021 This engagement runs from Tuesday 22 June - Tuesday 31 August 2021 The Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland (LLR) carers’ strategy is due for review and update. We want to hear your views. The information you provide will be used to develop the LLR Carers Strategy 2022 – 2025, alongside further engagement, coproduced project work with carers, and local and national data. This survey is about life before Covid-19 but we acknowledge that the past year has significantly impacted carers, with numbers of carers providing more care, supporting those with increasing needs, often unable to take a break wanting to protect themselves and the person they care for. With that in mind we have provided a question on the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns to provide comment on the last year too. Follow the below line to take part on the survey. https://surveys.leics.gov.uk/snapwebhost/s.asp?k=162253932100 Once the strategy has been developed there will be a period of formal consultation in early 2022 subject to Cabinet approval. This will ensure carers, local stakeholders, groups, and the public can comment on the strategy before it goes back to the council's Cabinet for final approval later in the year. Pawsome Pet Show Article by Helen Wilber
Throughout July, Leicester Animal Aid is running an online Pawsome Pet Show to raise money for animals on the Medical Foster Scheme. Local pet lovers can enter their pet into 7 different rounds including Golden Oldie and Best Rescue through the Fundraiser occupying the top slot of LAA’s Facebook page. Pet lovers can also enter by emailing info@ leicesteranimalaid.org.uk or by sending their photographs through the post to the address below. Please remember to include your pet’s name, age, and the round that you want to enter them into. The competition is ‘donate as you feel,’ which means that although donations are needed and very welcome, your pet’s chances of winning is not affected by whether you donate or not. More information is available at leicesteranimalaid.org.uk LAA’s Medical Foster Scheme is a Scheme for animals who, due to illness or long-term medical conditions, live temporarily in foster homes in the community until permanent ‘forever’ homes can be found. Some animals stay in their foster homes in the long-term. The Scheme has been running for around 24 years and was set up to address the issue of animals with an illness being at a disadvantage when it comes to adoption. Understandably, some families are put off by an animal’s health issues, either because they’re worried they don’t know how to manage this or for financial reasons. The Medical Foster Scheme helps by paying vet costs for animals who leave the centre with a known medical condition. Ongoing support and advice is also provided. One of our Medical Foster Scheme animals is Louis the Chihuahua. Louis and his brother Bean, have just reached their 10th birthday and have lived happily in their longterm foster home since being rehomed together around 5 years ago. Louis has epilepsy and is on medication to manage the condition. Being Chihuahuas, this pint-sizedpair are light on their feet and mum Jay keeps a close eye on their diet as, for Louis especially, becoming overweight could affect the efficacy of his medication. In the summer LAA would usually be out and about in the community, running dog shows and attending summer fetes. Understandably, many fundraising activities are on hold due to Covid-19 which means that the Charity is looking for other ways to recoup funds. LAA is now running dog first aid courses on Zoom, and talks about our work (to Women’s Institute groups and the like) can also be arranged on Zoom. More information about this and a short course for new dog owners called Canine Foundations is available on our website www.leicesteranimalaid.org.uk

Ratby Community Library And Crow Pie Cafe Article by Joan Burton
This month we have seen lots of visitors happy to collect the perfect book for ‘holiday’ reading. We have had a very large delivery of new stock and favourite authors, so there’s something for everyone on the shelves: from Lee Child’s Jack Reacher to ‘Bridgerton’ author Julia Quinn. We also have a large collection of brand new wellbeing and self-help texts sent to us by the County Council Libraries service as one form of support for many in our communities who may need assistance in re-establishing their mental health and balance. The pressure has been on us all, some harder than others. Over the May Bank Holiday Ratby saw some splendid space displays in the village’s Rocket Around Ratby activities. The library has a super section devoted to space stories and exploration set up in the children’s area, which is well worth a browse. One of our volunteers was delighted when her fours year old grandson, Tyler Smith, won a prize for his creation of Planet Woolly Wonder. Well done Tyler! Summer Reading Challenge 2021 If your child is eager to take part in the Summer Reading Challenge do come in and find out what we have to resource their reading. Developed in association with the WWF, the challenge sets out to give children a sense of their own planet and how they can stand up for the future of their own world. Children taking part will be able to ‘join up’ with six fictional wild world heroes, learning about the environment whilst getting involved with the fight to restore nature levels to their neighbourhood of ‘Wilderville’.

The challenge starts for Leicestershire on Saturday 4th July and runs until Saturday 5th September. It’s designed for children from 4 12 years of age (including children who will be 4 by the 31st August). Crow Pie Café Re-opening. At last! Come in and take a look at our refurbished Crow Pie Cafe. It is bright and cheerful with distanced seating for sixteen. There is plenty of space to eat and drink indoors in our relaxing and comfortable seating area. Fresh on the menu is delicious coffee of choice, snacks and cake, all brought to your table by our volunteer staff. Facilities Our free internet laptops are back in use. Not as many as before as we will be cleaning each one between usage but our many users will be glad to know they can search, open their emails, print off documents, etc, just as they used to do. It helps to know when we're open, though, and it's good to offer more open hours than we've had for many months. From Monday 5th July our hours will be: Monday 10am – 12 & 2pm - 4pm Tuesday 2pm – 4pm Wednesday 2pm – 4pm Thursday 10am – 12 & 2pm – 4pm Friday 2pm – 4pm Saturday 10am – 12

Taking The Strain Out Of Tired Eyes
There are some logical precautions you can take. If, for example, you know you spend more time than you should in front of a screen, schedule in regular breaks. If you’re not getting enough sleep, address this issue first.
Article by Gary Trickett
There are various causes of tired eyes but generally speaking, if you are suffering from eye strain it would suggest you are overworking your peepers. Everything from too much screen time to driving for long periods of time, can cause tired eyes. Here are some of the symptoms to look out for (no pun intended) and what you can do to help ease eye strain.
Most people suffering from tired eyes also find relief from the use of eye drops. A. Vogel's Eye Drops with Euphrasia and hyaluronic acid, are a favourite for dry, irritated or tired eyes. Just one drop 4 to 5 times daily can help to soothe and maintain lubrication of the eyes. They are also
Any activity that requires your eyes to be focused for a long time can leave your eyes feeling tired. Unsurprisingly, this makes your computer or smartphone one of the most common causes of eye strain. It is estimated that up to 90% of people who use a computer for more than three hours a day experience ‘computer vision syndrome’. Other causes of tired eyes include reading for too long, poor lighting, driving, allergy and simply not getting enough sleep. You know your eyes are struggling if you’re having difficulty focusing, blurred vision (that passes), or sore, dry or irritated eyes. Other common symptoms of eyestrain include increased sensitivity to light, a feeling of heaviness in the eyes and also headaches.

suitable to use whilst wearing contact lenses. For extremely dry eyes try their Extra Moisturising Eye Drops with double the amount of moisturising hyaluronic acid. A little eye cream or gel dabbed around your eye and gently smoothed into your eyelids can also help to freshen tired eyes. Residents, community groups, local businesses and others with an interest in the area are invited to give their views on the Hinckley and Bosworth Draft Local Plan in a consultation which begins on 30 June. The Local Plan is the key planning document for the borough and it will guide future development in Hinckley and Bosworth up to 2039. The draft plan sets out a preferred strategy for housing and economic growth, and includes a number of planning policies covering a range of issues such as conserving and enhancing the natural and historic environment, sustainable transport, good design and responding to the challenges of climate change. The policies will be used to guide development and respond to economic, environmental and social issues within the borough. Councillor David Bill, Executive Member for Planning at the Borough Council said: “The Local Plan sits at the heart of the planning system and provides the framework against which all planning decisions are considered. This consultation is an important stage in moving the Local Plan forward and is a chance for residents and communities to have their say on the future of the borough.” As well as being available to view and download on the website, printed copies of the document will be located at libraries within the borough and at the Hinckley Hub. Members of the public will be invited to attend drop-in events where planning officers will be present to answer questions, discuss views and provide advice on how to submit comments, subject to the latest coronavirus restrictions. Further details on the consultation, an online questionnaire and the latest plans for drop-in events can be found at www.hinckley-bosworth.gov.uk/localplanreview The consultation will run for eight weeks and ends on 27 August. The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group Article by Judith Upton
The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group generally meets 6 times a year, and membership is open to all. Details of the dates of meetings, together with the topics that will be covered, are shown on the notice board in Kirby Muxloe Library and on our website, which is www.kirbymuxloelocalhistorygroup.org Unfortunately, due to the Corona virus (Covid-19), all our meetings are cancelled until further notice. This includes our new “Memories” meetings, held at the Library meeting room each month. We will continue to support “Your Local” magazine with our monthly articles. Stay safe, follow government advice and if you are out and about, please practice social distancing. We have now extended our monthly newsletter to non-members of the History Group. A FREE copy can be picked up at Kirby Muxloe Library, Station Road, or Clann Gifts on Main Street, or email copies on request from info@kirbymuxloelocalhistorygroup.org Focus on Peter Cooper This month we turn our attention to the person believed to be the oldest native resident of Kirby Muxloe. Peter Cooper was born in a house on Church Road, Kirby Muxloe, on 23rd July 1927. He was brought up by his parents Alfred and Mabel. Peter tells us that as a boy, he was always “larking about” and was not averse to getting into schoolboy scrapes – he has a multitude of stories to tell. He attended Kirby Muxloe Primary School and then, having failed the 11+, his mother managed to get him enrolled in a new school (Gateway) for children who had good practical skills but had not passed to go to Grammar School. The Gateway school was founded in 1928 as a feeder school for Leicester College of Art. A fee had to be paid and his mother made and sold toffee in the village as a means to pay the fees. At the age of 15½, he gained an apprenticeship, which allowed him to leave school before the age of 16. By a young age, he had developed a talent for making anything with his hands. He had an artistic gift and could turn his hand to anything: signwriting, producing invitations & programmes and painting beautiful pictures, to name just a few. At the age of 18, his apprenticeship was broken up by a period of “hostilities only” service for two years. He had hoped to join the R.A.F. but found himself in the Fleet Air Army, stationed at Lossiemouth, Scotland and also serving in Ireland. He became known as 765836 Air Mechanic 1st Class. His job was to take care of the planes, in particular the one belonging to Major Cheeseman, his Commanding Officer. The Major had a very distinguished flying record. Peter says that occasionally Major Cheeseman told him to buckle up and he would then fly Peter out over the Hebrides. When Peter was due to go on leave, the Major would hand over his own chocolate rations and slip in a few pounds, telling Peter to enjoy his time off. When his time in the services came to an end, Peter returned to Leicester to finish off his apprenticeship. After a number of positions in different companies, Peter became very well known for his expert craftmanship and design capabilities. Eventually, in around 1978, he decided to set up his own company, as a graphic designer. The company was named Peter Cooper Enterprises. Working from a large shed in his garden on Portland Road, he designed exhibition stands, right through from their design to manufacture, including making scale models (this was a time before computers). With the help of Martin, his son, who could drive a lorry, they transported the whole exhibition stands to countries in Europe and sent stands by ship to as far afield as Hong Kong. When the equipment arrived in Hong Kong, Peter and Martin met the shipment and together they put together the display stands. Peter’s company didn’t ever have a studio or office in the town, but always worked from his studio (shed) in his garden, the breakfast room becoming an office where Pam, his wife, dealt with all the paper work. In the intervening years, he served as a member of the Free Church choir, organising their annual choir outing for many years, was a founder member of K.M. Cricket club when it resumed after WWII and was completely involved in village life. Eventually Peter retired and returned his hand to painting, making various woodwork items for both Kirby Muxloe churches and even mending lawnmowers! This year, Peter has decided to sell many of his paintings and prints and for the proceeds to be split between St Bart’s and the Free Church. There are many beautiful paintings, some of Kirby Muxloe and others of further afield. Each time I visit him, he seems to have found more and more paintings, which have been stored all over the house, often for years. So, please support your local churches and come along and view Peter’s paintings

After a year of struggling to find anything really positive to be writing about, we now find ourselves with almost (only almost!) too much! But that’s a good thing – signs of a return to normal, so let’s get on with it. NEW THINGS As you know, we have increased our opening hours. We are now open for 6 sessions each week, Monday, Fridays and Saturdays from 10.00 – 12.00, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, 2.00 – 4.00. You will still need to wear a mask and maintain distance. We shall have to wait and see what happens on July 19th, but at all times your safety comes first. We shall shortly have Covid test kits available at the Library, at no cost. If you need a kit, drop in and collect one. We are not sure yet when they will be delivered, but will put a notice in the window when we actually have them. After the fines holiday, you should be aware that fines for late returns have been reinstated from July 1st. Likewise the £1.00 charge for reserving books from other Libraries. SUMMER EVENTS The Summer Reading Challenge has started. This is for Primary School children, ages 4 – 12. The Challenge runs from July 3rd to 4th September. The theme this year is Wild World Heroes.. Children will need to enrol at the Library and get their starter kits. All they need to do then is borrow books from the Library to read at home. They can be any kind of books at all, and children will need to read at least 6 books to complete the challenge. They will receive stickers for each book read, and after 6 books will receive a certificate and a medal. An added bonus for children taking part in the scheme is free admission to Bosworth Battlefield and the 1620s House and Garden at Donington.

There will be a Treasure Hunt running from August 10th to August 28th. This sounds like fun. More details will be available at the Library in due course. On August 14th we will have a Theatre Performance, the Upswing Show. This will be an event for families with children of 5-11 years. More details later, but pencil it into your diaries. It looks like being a very creative and happy event. PLANS FOR THE FUTURE We are working with the Parish Council to turn our garden into a Sensory Garden for the Village, to provide a space for peace, calm and contemplation. This looks to be an exciting project and will be very much a part of our role as a Community Hub. We will keep you up to date as things progress. Hopefully this will also become a space for an extension of our café facilities. Exciting times ahead!

And talking of the café, depending on what happens on July 19th, we will be able to resurrect the Blue Potts Café, with refreshments available, our monthly coffee and crafts mornings, and the resumption of coffee clubs. Now there’s something to look forward to! AND FINALLY….. With all this going on, we need some new volunteers. Volunteering is such a rewarding and happy activity, with the opportunity to make loads of new friends and to feel that you are contributing to the community in a very positive way. There is no need to feel anxious that you couldn’t do it – full training is given and you will always be on duty with an experienced person. Drop into the Library for details and the opportunity to talk with other volunteers about what’s involved. Remember that every single one of us is a volunteer – if we can do it, so can you!
