LFE Film Evenings Article by Dennis Walker
Coronavirus Restrictions The UK Government has announced that public places such as cinemas and theatres can now open. However, measures will need to be put into place to ensure that premises and audiences are Covid-safe. We are currently looking into our options on how this can be managed. Until we are satisfied that we can put in place a system that complies with this objective, we do not intend to resume our Community Cinema before September 2021. It would be appreciated if readers of this announcement could make our position known to anybody you know who has attended, or intends to attend, our monthly Community Cinema event. As soon as we are able to finalise our procedures we will publicise our plans, and meanwhile thank all our patrons for their forbearance in these peculiar times. Georgios Enters Mascot Competition Article by Ismini Vasileiou
Georgios Anastasiou, a Year 6 student at Ratby Primary School, participated in the Leicestershire and Rutland Football Mascot competition and got a commendation. More information can be found here www.leicestershirefa.com/news/2021/ may/05/lrcfa-mascot-winner-announced Although he did not win, he received confirmation that his design with the words will also feature on the final mascot posters. This is a fantastic recognition for an 11 year old boy who has faced bullying and trying to raise awareness against it and racism #NoRoomForRacism

Protecting Your Family’s Inheritance Article by Klara Hesling
Our frontline staff follow Government guidelines for visiting you in your home and they are in the vaccination program with second course completed. LevLaw Ltd remains here for you. Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually.
Norwood Press Donation Update Article by Norwood Press
So far we have managed to help many groups and charities in the area. Here are some of the groups we have helped so far: • Shepshed Litter Pickers - New equipment and Hi-Vis jackets • Ratby Band - New junior / beginner music • 1st Anstey Guides - Days out and camp • Passion Youth Project Shepshed - New waffle maker for their cafe • Shepshed Toy Library - Childrens toys • Linda Barks - Knitting supplies • Glenfield Bowling Club - New signage • Shepshed Dolphin Swimming Group - Leaflet printing • Jean Bates Yarn Angels - Knitting supplies
But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased’s share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children’s inheritance is protected. This last point can be particular interest to couples who have come together and have children with different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensuring that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property, they can still sell the property and the proceeds to be used to purchase a new property, the terms of the Trust remain over the new property.
LEAFLETS - BUSINESS CARDS - LETTERHEADS MAGAZINES - BROCHURES - BOOKLETS "Thank you for your extremely kind donation. We are very lucky to have the lovely Emma and Andy who own Knotty Knits and Creative Krafts in Loughborough supporting us and they have given us an amazing deal on 100 balls of assorted baby wool for £100 ! This will be used to create baby clothes, baby blankets and small knitted toys for InterCare based in Syston. This charity raises money to send medical aid to hospitals and clinics in Africa. Each box is lined with a blanket and the small knitted items are used as packing instead of bubble wrap or polystyrene which can't be recycled there. It will also be used to make warm baby hats for asylum seeker and refugee families who arrive here with virtually nothing but what they stand up in. Thank you again Norwood Press for this donation. It will help many people who through no fault of their own are not able to help themselves. Our very best wishes for another 70 years in business." Jean Bates and Yarn Angels

Ozzy O’shea County Councillor
T: 0116 2394336 M: 07808585825 E: ozzyoshea@hotmail.com Have your say on school term time dates. Leicestershire County Council want to hear your views on your preferred school term and holiday dates for Leicestershire. We are looking to set the term dates for the five years between Autumn 2022 and Summer 2027 and would like to hear what you have to say on our three suggested options. These different proposals attempt to meet the range of different needs in the county which include trying to reduce term time holidays by having early breaks and balancing the length of terms to try to reduce staff and student sickness. Overall, we aim to improve outcomes for Leicestershire children. Broadly, the proposals are: 1. Keeping the ‘traditional’ county term time pattern, which offers an earlier summer holiday but means a longer autumn term 2. Aligning the autumn and spring breaks in line with most other authorities, including Leicester City, but again means a longer autumn term 3. Introducing a two-week autumn half-term break. This would leave terms ‘more balanced’ across the whole year but would result in a shorter Easter break More detailed information on these proposals is available via our consultation document: The Consultation document can be found via Leicestershire County Councils Web site via consultation or type in the below link www.leicestershire.gov.uk/have-your-say/current-consultations/have-yoursay-on-school-term-time-dates

Please contact Sam 07860280014 For appointments
The deadline for comments is midnight Sunday 18 July 2021. All responses will be considered and a recommendation for Leicestershire's new term time patterns will be presented to the council's Cabinet which is set to make a decision on this in the autumn. How we deal with road problems Potholes • All potholes need to be classified, before repairs can be scheduled. • When a member of the public reports a pothole, we will ensure an inspector visits and classifies the problem within 14 days. • The pothole is classified according to how serious it is and this dictates how quickly it is fixed: Category 1 defects • Require prompt attention as they represent an immediate or imminent hazard or a risk of short-term structural deterioration. • These defects will be fixed or made safe at the time of inspection, if reasonably practicable. • If it’s not possible to fix or make the defect safe at time of inspection, repairs of a temporary, or permanent nature will be done within 3 working days. Category 2 defects • Require attention, but do not represent an immediate or imminent hazard. • These defects have a target repair period of 90 calendar days from being reported by the public or will be included within a planned highways maintenance programme. Grass, hedges and trees • Grass cutting is scheduled between March and October, but is dependent on weather and may be subject to change. • Hedges and trees in general, are the responsibility of the adjacent landowner, although a small proportion do form part of the highway assets. • It may be worth notifying the adjacent landowner before contacting us, as they might be able to resolve the issue. • We will ensure an inspector visits and investigates the problem within 14 days. • For grass cutting issues, we will try and get these resolved as soon as possible. • For tree and hedge issues, we will find out who is responsible and ask them to cut back the trees within a reasonable timescale. If they don’t we will arrange to undertake the work ourselves and recharge them. You can report any of the above issues via the County Councils Website. Please follow the link below.

www.leicestershire.gov.uk/roads-and-travel/road-maintenance/report-a-roadproblem# Gritbins Investment scammers run riot on search engines, while victims pay the price Search engines such as Google and Microsoft’s Bing provide an easy hunting ground for criminals who target victims via paid-for adverts, while the spike in investment scams is pushing regulators and law enforcement to the limit, warns Which?. Action Fraud received more than 17,000 investment scam reports in the year to September 2020, up 28% on the previous year, with total losses reaching £657m – and many more cases go unreported. The financial uncertainty created by the pandemic has played into scammers’ hands: the Financial Conduct Authority’s (FCA) warning list of firms potentially running investment scams doubled from 573 in 2019 to 1,184 in 2020 follow the link. www.fca.org.uk/scamsmart/warning-list Many firms on the warning list initially advertised on either Google or Bing, having paid to appear at the top of search results for terms such as ‘best bonds’ and ‘best fixed-rate bonds’. We’ve found that such adverts have remained for weeks after the FCA issued warnings to avoid them Read more: www.which.co.uk/news/2021/03/investment-scammers-run-rioton-search-engines-while-victims-pay-the-price/ - Which? WhatsApp Scam Hackers are trying to get access to WhatsApp accounts after stealing the identities of their victims’ contacts. Here’s how it works and what to watch out for. First, you’ll receive an unexpected but genuine text message from WhatsApp containing a verification code. This is usually triggered when logging into the app for the first time, when you’ve been logged out, or you’re trying to log into WhatsApp from a new device. But in the case of this scam, fraudsters have entered your number into WhatsApp themselves to try to get access to your account, triggering the verification code text. Next, one of your WhatsApp contacts will message you via the app, usually with a story to try to persuade you to give them the verification code you’ve just received. They might say they’ve accidentally entered your number by mistake, for example. Because the message seems to be from a relative or friend, a lot of people have been tricked into passing on the verification code, which then allows fraudsters to take over their accounts. Once they’ve taken over, scammers might use your account in a few different ways How this WhatsApp scam works 1. You get text 2. Then a WhatsApp message from a friend asks you for the code. DO NOT SEND your friend's WhatsApp has been hacked – now you're the target! If you share the code, the scammers will hack yours too. I would like to thank residents and councillors for your continued support. Should you need my help or advice on any matter or issue please contact me. I pride myself on always making myself available to residents and councillors and getting straight back to you. Remember I am only a phone call or email away. Kind Regards Ozzy O’shea. RATBY PRIMARY SCHOOL
Year 6 - Darwin’s Delights During the summer term, we have been learning about Charles Darwin and his studies on the HMS Beagle. To better understand his studies, we did multiple science experiments on his research. The first experiment we did was an enquiry into how different bird beaks are better for eating certain foods. We carried out the experiment by collecting different tools and small foods and tried to pick up twenty of the different foods in one minute. Our results show that a spoon like beak is better for picking up lots if food at once, however, a sharp pointy beak is better for picking up one item at a time. Our next experiment was about how much weight eggs can hold. We explored this because we were wondering how an egg doesn’t crack under the mother hens weight. To grasp this idea, we put kilogram weights on an egg to see how much it could hold. We created a nest before we started the experiment to simulate the environment that the egg would be in. Starting with 100 grams, we gradually increased the weight on the egg until it cracked. To our surprise, some of the eggs stayed intact even with over 8 kilograms of weight! Amazingly, we found out that the egg will resist more weight when it is cushioned, due to the weight being more spread out, the egg will resist even more weight when positioned vertically. In conclusion to that experiment, we discovered eggs are much stronger than anticipated. Thanks to these experiments, we have been able to understand the works of Darwin better! By Logan and Joshua B Earth Class
Year 4 - Burps, Bottoms and Bile! The topic for Year 4 this term has been ‘Burps, Bottoms and Bile’ which has involved learning all about the digestive system! The children have thoroughly enjoyed finding out all about different types of teeth and how our bodies break down and digest food (and then get rid of it at the end!). In our Science lessons, we have set up and observed some great (and very messy!) experiments including making poo using crackers, orange juice and a pair of tights! We also looked at the impact of different liquids on our teeth by placing eggs into a range of drinks to see what would happen… We couldn’t believe the terrible effects of the energy drink, fruit juice and cola on the egg shells – it was very clear that water and milk were the best options for our teeth!
Year 3 - Scrumdiddlyumptious Our topic in Year 3 for the Summer term was ‘Scrumdiddlyumptious’. This has been a fun and truly yummy half term of learning. For our DT focus we have researched, designed and made our very own creative cookies. We have considered the name of our cookies and made them exciting and unique. We have made packaging for our cookies with slogans, ingredients and even a Wonka logo. For English we have written letters to Mr Wonka himself to ask if we can have our cookies made in his magical factory. We are awaiting his response, but are hopeful of a positive outcome!
10 | www.openboxpromotions.co.uk/news
The children have also been very creative within this topic, they have written some exciting stories about a journey through the digestive system and have painted some wonderful digestive systems using water colour paints. In Design and Technology, Year 4 have also designed and sewn their own digestive systems onto tea towels using a range of fabrics and other materials! We now have a great knowledge all about how our digestive system works and can discuss the function of each of the organs involved!

RATBY PRIMARY SCHOOL Year 1 Moon Zoom! “One small step for man, one giant leap for Year 1!” We have had a fantastic start to the Summer term and have enjoyed exploring our new topic – “Moon Zoom”. This exciting topic has allowed us to learn some interesting facts about space, how travel into space has developed and we have also had the opportunity to investigate and create some wonderful texts centred around space. The children especially enjoyed making flying saucers for “Rocket Around Ratby” – a space-themed trail around the village, and have even made their own alien masks to form the basis of instructional writing. We look forward to completing our topic with space themed art work and designing our own rockets!
Visit From Monet
Foundation Stage children have been very busy during this half term and enjoyed a visit from the famous artist, Monet! We were so surprised he came to visit us here in Ratby and once we had learned a little more about him, we created some pond plates in the style of his work. Here are some photos of our amazing art!
Year 5 – Allotments Year 2 Art Showcase, The Co-op Mural The Galaxy class were recently asked to create a piece of artwork inspired by Ratby village for the local Co-op to display in their store. Year 2 worked super hard to create a final piece titled ‘The Four Seasons of Ratby’. We used inspiration from the spring bluebells in the Burroughs as the focal point for the project and then created a seasonal effect for each of the four seasons we see in Ratby. This week, the display was finally unveiled as a mural which is now the window display for our local Co-op. The children in the Galaxy class were absolutely thrilled to see their amazing artwork on display. The smiles on their faces show how proud they are of their effort! We hope the local residents of Ratby enjoy the display too!

This term, we have been looking at allotments and how things grow. At the start of the term, we weeded the raised allotment beds on the top field so they were ready for planting. We then made planters out of plastic bottles. We had to design them to be strong, stable, portable and self-watering. We are looking forward to adding them to our allotment and seeing our plants grow. We have tried sketching things from nature such as leaves, trees and flowers. We have also written instructions on how to plant a fruit tree and written descriptive setting paragraphs about gardens in our English work. It was interesting to look at the different farming all over the world and we used atlases to find the different countries and their farming on a world map. In science, we looked at whether dock leaves would help cure a nettle sting. We learned that they wouldn’t because nettles and dock leaves are both acidic and we need an alkali to neutralise an acid. We had fun experimenting to find out whether different substances were acids or alkalis by testing them on universal indicator paper. By Mercury class.

And finally, Ratby Chip Shop. So the question has finally been answered. Will it or won't it ever open again ?
What is now becoming apparent is that the Council is way behind where it should be in terms of determining what is to be built in our Borough and more importantly , where. We are in this position for a number of reasons. Firstly , we do not have a 5 year housing plan. This is primarily because the ruling LibDem Administration could not bring forward the Sustainable Urban Extensions in Earl Shilton and Barwell so therefore other rural areas such as Ratby are at risk of further development without any protection despite objections from local residents. Secondly , HBBC'S Local plan is now delayed until August 2022. This document is a legal requirement to set out delivery targets of numbers of houses to be built and where they should go. Despite an offer of help from our MP Dr Luke Evans , the Council Leader has refused this. Here in Ratby , we have had 258 houses passed already that are not sustainable and a road network not equipped to handle the extra traffic. Lastly , Neighbourhood plans. These are documents put together mostly by community volunteers and often led by local Parish Councillors who give up their time to produce these plans and once signed off , go towards the Site Allocation Development Management Plan. In short , they are produced so that local residents can have a say in determining where new builds go and in turn afford protection if the local countryside. But , without a Local Plan which will now run until 2036 , these Neighbourhood plans are out of date already. We know that their is a national shortage of housing and in our Borough, a shortage of affordable housing but when do we say enough is enough. During the last County Council Elections , the ruling LibDem Administration put out leaflets declaring a build, build, build policy by the Government but in reality here, under their tenure, it is a policy of pass, pass, pass .Be careful what you wish for. Ratby gets wombled. On Saturday 29th May at 11am , a group of volunteers came together to do a charity litter pick in the village for LOROS. This was organized by Emma Grundy and the Rapid Releif Team who are part of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church. About 30 people turned up to hit the streets , including Chris. A sizable amount of rubbish was collected off the streets and this was then followed by free burgers for the volunteers. Congratulations to all who helped.

The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group Article by Judith Upton
The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group generally meets 6 times a year, and membership is open to all. Details of the dates of meetings, together with the topics that will be covered, are shown on the notice board in Kirby Muxloe Library and on our website, which is www.kirbymuxloelocalhistorygroup.org Unfortunately, due to the Corona virus (Covid-19), all our meetings are cancelled until further notice. This includes our new “Memories” meetings, held at the Library meeting room each month. We will continue to support “Your Local” magazine with our monthly articles. Stay safe, follow government advice and if you are out and about, please practice social distancing. We have now extended our monthly newsletter to non- members of the History Group. A FREE copy can be obtained at Kirby Muxloe Library or Clan Gifts on Main Street. Memories of Leicester Market This month we turn our attention to Leicester Market. As many of us will be aware, Leicester Market is believed to be the largest outdoor covered market in Europe. Its origins date back to the year 1298 when records state that “a market took place bounded by the city walls and the corn wall”. The corn wall was an area where horse dealers demonstrated the speed of their horses. For the past 700 years, it has been on the same site as it is today. In the sixteenth century, the market was held on a Saturday and named the “Saturday Shambles” and by 1850 it was held on three days. Today the market trades six days a week, closing only on Sundays. We are so fortunate to have so many people living in K.M. with stories to tell and the following piece was written by Jan Timson, whose grandparents, Mr and Mrs A.E. Clarke, had a stall selling gloves and hats.
hated, also winter vests which made me itch! (J.U.: I also hated them and they were very itchy!) What I found most interesting were the gentlemen’s longcoms, which he had hanging up prominently in the centre of the stall. Besides the fly in the front, they had a flap at the back which buttoned up, imagine the rest! There were so many other stalls selling dress fabrics, lace curtains, curtain fabrics and more and more clothes. Lastly, I must mention Lawrence Wright, who, before he had a shop on London Road, played the piano near to his music stall. A longer version of this article can be seen on our website on www. kirbymuxloelocalhistorygroup.org Click on “recollections” in the column on the left and then Jan Timson. With many thanks to Jan or her amazing memories
My grandmother’s stall was on the main alley which was opposite the City Cinema. As you entered, the stall on the left displayed fur coats and stoles, (what a temptation to stroke); this stall belonged to Mrs Cohen, a lovely middle-aged Jewish lady. Opposite Mrs Cohen were the Reeder sisters, who sold beautiful smart hats suitable to wear for weddings and special occasions. Next to Mrs Cohen were the Frieders, who sold toys, many of them mechanical tinplate toys. My grandmother was next to the Freiders. Grandma sold gloves of many types, woollen gloves for children and general wear, ladies and gents leather gloves, gentlemen’s leather driving gloves lined with real fur and gauntlets with leather palms, a woollen lining and Astrakhan on the back. Leather gloves had to be carefully fitted and my grandmother taught me how to ease them gently down children’s fingers. Eventually I was trusted with fitting children’s gloves and removing them by gently pulling them from the tips. If a lady or gent found a pair of leather gloves rather tight on the fingers, a glove stretcher was brought into use to gently ease each finger to fit. Grandma also sold hats. She sold hats for everyday wear, usually made of felt and mainly dark colours. The only decoration was a petersham ribbon of a matching colour, with a flat bow. Hats could also be adjusted by my grandma - she hat a hat stretcher, a device which looked a bit like a head, with no features, which was in two parts. A long screw joined the parts together and could be wound to open the gap and stretch the hat which was on it. If a hat was too big, tissue paper was folded into a long strip about 1-2 inches (3-5 cm.) of suitable thickness and inserted behind a petersham band inside the hat. Mr Grant’s stall always fascinated me. He sold various forms of underwear, mostly woollen, for everyone. My mother bought my liberty bodices (an undergarment worn by girls in the ‘40’s and ‘50’s) from him, which I

Jan’s story - My grandmother lived in Kirby Muxloe and was taken to Leicester Market on Fridays and Saturdays where my grandfather and father helped to set up her stall. From an early age, I regularly went with my father to help Grandma pack up at the end of the day, so I got to know many folk who had stalls near to her. I was fascinated by the huge wicker hampers with small solid iron wheels, into which many people carefully packed the various item they sold. As the hampers were rolled across the cobbles to the big doors that led to the storage space under the Corn Exchange, the rumble was unmistakeable. To me, Leicester Market was an Aladdin’s cave from the late 1930’s through to the 1940’s, when I was a child.

Isn’t it just lovely? It never ceases to amaze us that the weather has such an influence on mood. We now have a sense of cautious optimism about the future and feel that we can start planning again. Oh, to get back to the days of coffee, cakes and children’ s crafts, and the buzz of happy chatter and laughter in the Library, to say nothing of quizzes, ukulele concerts and the rest. Not quite there yet but we are certainly ready for it. Changes As from June 1st, we no longer have to quarantine books for 72 hours. This will make life a lot easier for all of us – you can now browse books happily without having to put them into separate boxes for 72 hours – they can go straight back on to shelves. The only exception is for returned books, which should be left in the boxes at the entry point and will be wiped down by volunteers before returning to the shelves. We are also able to increase numbers in the Library from 1st June. We can now accommodate 14 people at any one time. Up to this point, we have had to limit numbers to 8, so that is a definite improvement. This number is inclusive of volunteers. At the moment we are still having to observe all hygiene procedures – wearing face masks, sanitising hands upon entry, and maintaining social distance. Trach and Trace remains in operation, and we shall continue to act in line with Government guidance. None of us know yet precisely what will be happening on 21st June, given the impact of the Delta variant. Assuming that the gradual opening up continues, we are planning to increase our opening hours from that point on. Our plan is to double the hours but keep sessions to 2 hours rather than 3 at any one time – wearing a mask for longer than 2 hours at a time can be stressful for some people. Our planned hours are: Mondays 10.00 -12.00 and 2.00 – 4.00 Tuesdays 2.00 – 4.00 Wednesdays 2.00 – 4.00 Fridays 10.00 – 12.00#Satyrdaos 10.00 – 12.00
0116 2505 848
Note that we will no longer be opening on Thursdays. Should matters change, we will put notices on our website, Facebook, notice boards and in the Library windows. Volunteers We are looking now to recruit more volunteers. Have you thought about volunteering for the Library? We can offer you a range of interesting tasks, for which you will be fully trained, the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends, and the chance to feel that you are helping to contribute to the well-being of our community. Remember that we are a Community Hub as well as a Library, and we seek to provide a focus for village activities by increasing provision for people to meet in a range of activities, or simply to come into the Library for coffee and a chat if they are feeling a bit lonely and isolated. Rarely has this been more needed than now, when communities pulling together has been critical in supporting people in difficult circumstances. The Library offers a a warm and friendly environment, and, all being well, we hope soon to re-open our very successful Blue Potts café. If you are interested, just drop in to the Library, collect a form to complete, and we will be in touch. Other News We are pleased to say that we have now received a range of 82 books focussing on mental health and well-being, for adults, young people and children. These are essentially self-help books and are a result of concern about how people’s well-being has been affected over the course of the pandemic and lockdown. It is a joint Reading Agency and Government initiative. Come and have a browse and see if you can find anything helpful for you or others that you may know. As part of opening up, we are now selling again greetings cards and wrapping paper at very reasonable prices. And finally for this month, have you thought about joining the Love Blaby Lottery? This is a Blaby District initiative that raises money for good causes. Tickets are £1.00 each and there is a weekly draw with a maximum £25,000 prize. 60% of the money raised goes directly to good causes such as the Library. You can nominate the good cause that you would like your contribution to benefit (us, of course!) and buy as many or as few tickets as you would like on a weekly basis. Contact the Love Blaby Lottery for more details.
