SETTING OFF FOR THE LAST OF HIS 21 RUNS (left to right): Councillor Ozzy O’Shea (Loz’s dad), Loz O’Shea, Mike Kapur OBE (The Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire) and Dan Harrison (Chairman of Leicestershire County Council)

Pledged To Do ‘Something Massive’ For His Late Mum, So...

Loz Runs 21 Half-Marathons In 21 Days Raising £5,000 A Groby man who has finished his pledge to run 21 halfmarathons in 21 days, dedicated each run to someone who lost their life to cancer. Laurance O’Shea says he was inspired to do the challenge after losing his mum to cancer three years ago. Laurance, more commonly known as Loz, donned 17 different outfits while taking part in the challenge, from Spiderman to Thunderbirds. Loz said each costume was picked by the person or loved one with cancer. He even went so far as to plan out each route so he ended each race at the doorstep of the person he was running for.

Distribution

The 44-year-old suffers from epilepsy, which he says was heightened during the loss of his mother, Jenny O’Shea. Despite the health risks, which prevent him from driving, Loz said he wanted to do “something massive” for his mum.

Visit Our Website

Loz works at the Asda distribution centre in Lutterworth and cycles 40 miles a day to get there and back from his home in Groby. He is married to wife, Leila, and has two sons,17-year-old Loz and 15-year-old Kyle.

He said: “My family supported me every step of the way, my eldest was well made up. I just wanted to do something really big and I feel like I’ve achieved that. I’ve done fundraising in the past, but after I lost my mum, my epilepsy got worse and my seizures started playing up, so I had to stop for a while. Her illness was really short, they found lumps on her chest and brain but before they could operate they found her on the floor with a bleed on the brain. I’ve always wanted to do something that would make her proud and I really hope I have. I’ve lost my grandma and grandad and an aunty because of cancer too, and I just had the realisation that people from all walks of life have lost a handful of people to the disease - so I wanted to do my bit to help.”

Loz’s challenge began on March 25, ending on April 14, raising just over £5,000 for Cancer Research UK.

He said: “We did a JustGiving page and I’ve had cash donations, clearing just over £5,000. I used three weeks holiday from work and ended up running an extra 53 miles than I intended to - meaning I did 315 in total. If I couldn’t run towards someone I had dedicated the run to - for example someone in Nuneaton - I would do miles around Leicestershire. I met so many people along the way and I can’t tell you how good it felt to see a smile on their face.” His outfits ranged from Batman and Robin to Superman, Wolverine, Captain America, 21 half marathons in 21 days - from page 1 Spiderman, Mr Incredible, Mr T from the A-Team, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Darth Maul, Darth Vader, Where’s Wally, Deadpool, Garfield, a Storm Trooper, Thunderbird and Robocop. The runner’s favourite journey was day 17, when he ran 18.4 miles in a Deadpool costume. He said: “I didn’t want to stop. The public were loving it and kept horning their cars. I did it for a random woman who had taken a picture of me in my outfit on Day 5. We got to talking and she told me she had also lost her son to cancer. She told me his name was Shay - which is like my surname. When she added me on Facebook I knew I had to dedicate one of my runs for him. Another good day was the 19th run, when I dressed as a storm trooper. I was in Hinckley when this man filmed me. He saw me again in New Parks and showed me a video he put together for his son, of me in my outfit. Stuff like that kept me going.” On the last day, Loz put on his Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle outfit and got family members to dress up, too. He said: “All four turtles crossed the finishing line that day. It was for my mum and her twin sister, who both lost their lives to cancer. It meant a lot to my grandma who lost her husband, her mum and both her daughters to the disease. The Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire and the chairman of Leicestershire County Council set me on my way and were both there to see me finish at the end. It was quite a thing to have them do that for me and help me raise awareness for cancer.”

Newtown Linford Choral Society Article by Peter Sayer

In March the Choral Society presented a concert of classical and sacred pieces of music to a capacity audience in Loughborough, and received a very enthusiastic response. We are now busy rehearsing for our ever-popular Summer Concert, which will be held in Newtown Linford Village Hall on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th June. We will be performing a variety of light hearted songs to suit the summer season, including for example ’Under the Boardwalk’, ’What a Wonderful World’, and a medley of Broadway favourites from the past. We will also be celebrating the Platinum Jubilee by including some songs which are said the be favourites of the Queen. There will be a licensed bar. Tickets are available by ringing 01530 243822, and prices are £10 for adults, and £5 for students in full time education.

Churches Together In Ratby Article by Joan Hawkins

Christian Aid Week 15th - 22nd May In Zimbabwe, the climate crisis is causing aching hunger for families. The combined effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, conflict, and drought have robbed families of the power to provide basic needs for families. And 7,000 miles away, the war in Ukraine are driving up food prices in Zimbabwe and around the globe. Without the fertiliser and food like wheat and cooking oil - that Ukraine and Russia produce, vulnerable families will be pushed even deeper into hunger.

Your gifts this Christian Aid Week could help set up water taps, or help people to learn to grow food, and provide seeds that thrive in drought – giving people all they need to turn dry, dusty land into a garden of hope. Please join us this Christian Aid Week and help turn hunger into hope. With every gift, every action, every prayer, we celebrate and share hope with our sisters and brothers facing crisis around the world, from Ukraine to Zimbabwe. You would be very welcome to the Parish church rooms on Saturday morning 21st May for a Christian Aid Big Breakfast event where you can have an English breakfast served to you and again you can also drop off envelopes. There will be a special Christian Aid Services at the Parish Church on 22nd May, at 10am – everyone welcome.

Ratby Community Library And Crow Pie Cafe Article by Joan Burton

Spring has sprung with a sprightly step forward in the library! First, the trustees and volunteers of Ratby Library and Community group would like to express their sincere thanks and appreciation to the widow of the late William (Bill) Sinclare, for passing on his bequest of £200 to the library. It was a lovely gesture and will be put to good use. Condolences to Jo and a warm invitation to come in for a cuppa and a chat at any time. Bradgate Rotary Club have made a donation of £200 to our funds and have generously offered to assist us in other ways with planning events and publicity. This organization does a huge amount of charity work nationally and we are delighted to be in touch with them and working on a range of ideas . Wildflowers on their way. The library has been successful in its bid for £300 Shire grant in order to establish a wildlife biodiverse area to the rear of the library. The money comes with several conditions which we are happy to abide by. Anyone interested in becoming our nature reporter to Nature records, please get in touch. What we've been up to lately and what's to come! On 8th April we ran a very lively and successful craft afternoon for children. It was the first day of the holidays and this Easter event really kicked off their free time. Babies, and toddlers enjoyed messy play; Baby Otis pictured here at his first such outing where he got the hang of it very quickly! Older children made spring flowers and cards and the painting and making tables were full. The raffle and guess the bunny's name (Ruby by the way), were popular additions to the afternoon. 25th April saw the first meeting of Kathryn's Art Club. This is a weekly evening event from 7.30 – 9 p.m. Costing only £6, including all materials, future activities include lino printing, watercolour and acrylic painting with pompom making on 9th and 16th May. And of course, Krafty Corner crafters are still meeting on the first Tuesday of the month from 10.30 until 12. There's a lot of art in Ratby. 2nd May and the library was open for toys, teas and tasty cakes. The Ratby Yard Sale is always fun and this year the volunteers organized our own stall as well as greeting lots of thirsty visitors who thoroughly welcomed the chance to rest and recuperate before continuing their search for that priceless antique or special toy for the new grandchild. The cafe is open every session for delicious coffee and teas, cakes and savoury snacks at very fair prices, not just on Bank holidays. The cafe is the main source of income for the library so do call in and enjoy your visit. 28th May. We're in discussion with Jane, a Royal Academy of Dance teacher, about a taster morning for children where they can explore Ballet or Rainbow Yoga. Watch out for more details on Spotted Ratby and other social media. Fancy a game of BINGO! ? That's another plan in discussion but so far we have our caller, Steve, taking time off from his quizzes and we've got the bingo cards – just sorting out prizes now so watch this space. Is Family History an interest of yours? If so, a local expert is ready to set up a group where a first social occasion would be 'for individuals to talk... about where they are at in their research and any problems they may have encountered' leading on to planning for further meetings covering,

for example, 'useful record resources, how to use them and any pitfalls to avoid'. Again, more details to come. Fish and Chip Supper and a Right Royal Quiz. Friday 3rd June 7.30p.m. Steve Roche welcomes a jubilee crowd to a special evening full of food, fun and fascinating facts. Rosie Robinson's Book Club is up and running. Book discussion, pamper gift and a really super atmosphere create a warm welcome to the session. Call in for details as to book choices and times. AGM of Ratby Community Library 27th April 6pm in the library This meeting was attended by trustees, volunteers and one other member of the public. We received the reports from the Chair, Mr K Hunnybun, the Secretary, Mrs A Hunnybun and the Treasurer, Mrs D Huxtable. The trustees remain as Mr K Hunnybun, Mrs A Hunnybun, Mrs D Huxtable, Mrs J Burton and Mr M Loft. Many thanks go to Ken and Avril for all of their officer work over the years. Come to our Big Brekkie! Ready to change the world over breakfast? We’ll be serving a delicious morning meal, while raising money to fight poverty and injustice worldwide.

Ratby Church Rooms Church Lane Ratby LE6 0JF

Article by Liz Collinson Summer starts officially on 1st June – but it is beginning to feel to us that it is pretty well with us now – wonderful! We want this summer to feel special for us all. It feels as though we should celebrate our village and its community spirit in what have been dark times. So what better way to do this than to celebrate the sunflower? Sunflowers follow the sun. They face east in the morning and turn to track the sun as the day progresses. Isn’t that amazing? We feel that this symbolises what we need to do now, and so we are celebrating the sunflowers and the impending summer. Here’s how. We are joining with other village organisations in plans for the Summer Sunflower Spectacular and the Scarecrow and Fun Day Festival (September 10th and 11th). The aim is to have a mass of sunflowers in gardens around the village. All Primary School children have sown seeds for themselves. More seeds, pots and seedlings are available from Moore’s and from the Library, for a small donation. Do get involved and let’s brighten up the community with these extraordinary flowers. Nothing could be simpler! So what else have we got planned? DUKE OF EDINBURGH STUDENTS Heike and Abigail have for working with us for the past few months as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. They are now coming to the end of their placement – we have been very happy to have them with us and wish them well for the future. For the summer term, we have Summer (how fitting is that!) and Chloe, who will be starting shortly. So we look forward to welcoming them and getting to know them. GARDEN TIDY-UP A number of people joined us at our last coffee morning to help with tidying up the garden at the front of the Library, which is now beginning to look much prettier. Many thanks to all those who joined in. We would like to think that this is not a one-off event, so if you feel like giving us a hand, we will have another go at our next coffee morning on Saturday May 28th. BOOK SALE Thanks to the generosity of Library users, we now have loads of books, jigsaws and DVDs, so we will be running a sale of these items alongside the next coffee morning on May 28th. You can get 3 paperbacks for £1.00, to while away the weary hours on a plane when you take your holidays. Cheap enough for you to leave them behind for the next lot of visitors! THE QUEEN’S JUBILEE Alongside other village celebrations, we will be serving freshly-baked scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam, and tiny cakes such as mini eclairs and mini chocolate truffle cakes, together with ice creams and drinks from 2.00pm on Thursday 2nd June. Do join us.

Rosemary and Roger are busy devising another of their famous paper-based quizzes to fit in with the Jubilee theme. These will be on sale in the Library from 16th May for £1.00 each. APOLOGIES AND THANKS In last month’s Local we said that Tom had been mowing the Library gardens for years and would appreciate some help. We should also have mentioned that Stephen Foster and George Carpenter had also been helping with this onerous task. This was a careless and unintentional omission, and we would like to apologise for any hurt feelings. We appreciate all help that is given by each and every one of our volunteers. The library is run on a totally voluntary basis. Without their help, there would be no Library at all! So warmest thanks to each and every one - and apologies again for careless omissions. Spring Fare – 9th April 2022 Thank you to everyone who came along to the spring fare on Saturday the 9th April. The library was busy with local stallholders. As well as coffee and cakes we have various stalls including freshly cooked samosas (which are very popular) and a tombola as well as the opportunity to meet up. For the children there were activities such as making plate rabbits, colouring for the younger ones and Lego TM for the older children. We can also loan out books but please remember the Coffee Mornings on the 1st Saturday of the month (10:00 – 13:00).

Not many people understand what it’s like to live with Parkinson’s. They don’t realise that treatments are limited and that there is no cure. This is why coming together in a group can be so helpful. Do not get the idea that our group meetings are sad and serious affairs as there is a great emphasis on enjoyment, fun and helpful activities. At the last Sunday meeting we were entertained by Pat Hall who brought joy and laughter and shared some tales and tips in her funny comedy routine.

Looking for Volunteers We are still looking for volunteers. Volunteering at the library doesn’t mean to do a library shift but can be helping out at events, creating posters, writing articles or even flyer dropping in the local area. Any assistance you can give will be gratefully appreciated. Please contact us using the QR code below.

Julie is on the right with a few members of the Hinckley Group If you would like to support Julie and donate to either or both of these worthy causes you can do so in a variety of ways: you can fill in a sponsor form available at any of our meetings, or you can go to Just Giving at www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/julie-bailey64 The 64 sends donations to LOROS, but if you change it to 58 your donation goes to Parkinson’s UK. If you prefer to donate with cash or cheque you can contact Julie herself on 07952 181 797 to arrange details.

Want to help but are Time Deprived? If you are lacking time to volunteer then please consider supporting the library by purchasing one or more numbers in the 100 Club. If you would like to be in the draw for the rest of the year, please ask via the QR code below or volunteers at the library for a form. It costs £12 pro rata so to be added to the June Draw until December it will cost £7 per number. You have to be in it to win it! Aprils Draw 1st prize No 23 2nd Prize No 19 3rd Prize No 27

Julie is a Holistic Therapist working for and with clients with MND or Parkinson’s, and their carers, to bring some relief into their lives. Julie works in the community and visits individuals in their homes enabling them to receive the support they need. Julie says, “It is a drop in the ocean but I hope it gives them as much reward as it gives me. They inspire me, they humble me and they encourage me to give more”

Theresa and Bill with Chair Janet Kavanagh. Fund Raising is obviously important to allow the group to arrange so many activities – paying for room hire or for professional support from our activity leaders for example. On June 25th one of our committee members, Julie Bailey [known to us as Julie Bliss], is going to jump out of an aircraft to raise valuable funds for two very worthy causes, the Motor Neurone Disease team at LOROS and Parkinson’s UK Hinckley Group.

Budding Writers Invited To Submit Work For New Book Celebrating Leicestershire Article by Tim

Budding writers are being invited to submit their poetry and short stories for a new book celebrating Leicestershire. “I am particularly keen to promote fresh, new talent so extend this invitation to anyone aged 16 and over,” says Tim, who has just published The Hampshire Collection. “The challenge is that poetry needs to be 30 lines or under and stories must not exceed 1,000 words.” The deadline is July 28, 2022 with publication scheduled for late 2022/early 2023. Email your entries to: tsaunderspubs@gmail.com Separately, Tim is also working on a fundraising project for Ukraine. “Within the next few months I will be publishing a book celebrating freedom and hope with 100 per cent of the royalties going to the Sunflower of Peace Foundation (sunflowerofpeace.com.), a non-profit organization committed to helping Ukrainians affected by the Russian military invasion. For this I am looking for unpublished poetry (no more than 30 lines) and short stories (no more than 1,000 words) on the subjects of freedom and hope. The deadline is June 1.” Email your entries to: tsaunderspubs@gmail.com For more information visit: http://tasaunders.weebly.com/tim-saunders-publications.html

Grand Slam Scarratt

Former Bosworth Academy student, Emily Scarratt, skippered the England Women’s rugby team to victory in the Six Nations decider on April 30.

The home team started the stronger of the two teams and got the opening try but the Red Roses hit back with three tries to lead 21-7 at half time. The second half saw France have much of the ball and a pivotal last ditch tackle from Emily prevented France from scoring a try. Captain Scarratt scored a penalty to add to her three try conversions and the Grand Slam was clinched with a final score of 24-12. The result was the Red Roses’ 23rd victory in a row - equalling their record set between 1992-97 and was also their fourth consecutive Women’s Six Nations title.

Article by Adam Hodges It was a day to remember for Bosworth Academy students at the schools paralympian festival held at Loughborough University where they met two British paralympians who showed them new skills. Students Tia B, Ashden C, George H S, Jacob H, Dillon M, Daniel M, Janet M and Ruby N were among 300 others from schools across Leicestershire and Rutland participating in social and physical activities. The school sports festival was organised by Active Together Partners and individual events were led by Tokyo 2021 wheelchair rugby gold medallist, Nick Cummins MBE, and London 2012 judo paralympian, Dan Powell. Year 8 student, Ashden Cahalin, was shown judo moves by Dan Powell and Ashden appeared on BBC East Midlands Today where he told them, “I found it really good. It’s amazing. I was absolutely sweating after it but I've learnt so many new things.”

Article by Adam Hodges

Both England and France had won all their previous four games in the 2022 TikTok Women’s Six Nations tournament, setting up a winner-takes-all match played in front of a capacity crowd in Bayonne, France.

Bosworth Academy Students Meet British Paralympians

Rugby Union Weekly show that “I don't think any of us are under any illusions of when that game comes around how tough it's going to be”. Emily has now made 101 appearances for England and received a commemorative golden cap in front of her home crowd at Welford Road last month. The 32-year-old also picked up another gong on May 3 when she received her MBE from Prince Charles at Windsor Castle after being named in last year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours list. Speaking after the ceremony, Emily described it as “strange to do by yourself” as she is used to working in a team but said it was “a huge honour” to receive the MBE.

The two teams are due to meet next in October’s World Cup and Emily told the BBC Radio 5 Live’s

14 | www.openboxpromotions.co.uk/news

Jacob Harris, a Year 9 student, also spoke with BBC Radio Leicester where he described his first time trying out judo as “really fun and I would love to do it again at some

point. I’m also looking forward to trying out wheelchair basketball as it allows people in a wheelchair to participate in a sport they may not have been able to do before.” Amongst the other activities that the students got to participate in were boccia, new age kurling, badminton and motor activity training. The event was part of a wider week-long initiative where activities were conducted virtually through the Virtual Together app and on Active Together’s website where students could watch interactive videos and gain valuable resources. Active Together said that the aim of the week was to “promote engagement and participation in Paralympic sport, especially after the success of Tokyo 2020.” The team of Bosworth Academy students were more than willing to learn new skills.

Great Central Railway Gives The Go Ahead For £1,000,000 Bridge Replacement Article by Michael Gough

The Great Central Railway PLC’s Board are pleased to announce that they have today given approval for the work on the replacement of Bridge 326 crossing the A60 adjacent to the former Brush Works in Loughborough to commence with immediate effect.

PHOTO ABOVE: The existing structure looking towards the former Brush site and Loughborough

A purchase order has now been placed with VolkerLaser who are the preferred main contractors. Fabrication of the two new steel and concrete U decks will commence as soon as the final design work is completed by HBPW Consulting of Retford and the steel (which has already been design-specified) arrives at the fabricators, Carver Steel in Harworth, Doncaster. Volker will be ready to demolish the old bridge deck and install the new twin decks from the 1st October, as well as making good the existing bridge abutments. This will enable both the track to the midland mainline chord and the future line from GCR south to pass over the newly-constructed bridge. Two tracks over the bridge are essential to secure a future connection with the mainline. This project represents the next major step in the reunification of the Great Central Railway Loughborough with the northern section which leads to Ruddington in Nottinghamshire. Work, in the first instance, to investigate a possible repair to the, more than 120 years old, deck rather than replacement proved that too much original section had been lost to corrosion and thus replacement proved to be the only financially viable option. This major project will cost in excess of £1 million in total and is projected to complete at the end of October this year. The bridge replacement will be funded by supporters and the Railway’s charitable trust and will therefore be cost-neutral to the PLC. Commenting on the announcement, the Railway’s Managing Director, Michael Gough said; “This project represents another major step in the drive for reunification of the two GCR sections and in the return of the currently-disused northern section of line back to traffic. This is a 120-year old structure which is certainly life-expired and cannot be repaired and we are pleased once again to be able to work with the team at Volker who have proven to be trusted partners on two previous bridge projects for the Railway that have both gone incredibly well.

Your County Councillor Update THE LAST YEAR has seen us all starting to get back to business as usual after the pandemic changed all of our lives. Lee and Nick have continued to take up issues on behalf of residents across the Division. Highways issues have been a large part of this workload. The Members Community fund allocation, totalling £50,000, allowed us to liaise with the community and submit a total of £48,000 worth of schemes to improve and enhance the area. Some of these schemes are now scheduled for implementation, some are awaiting approvals and some were refused on technical/ regulatory matters. We now have a further allocation to add to our first year’s carry over and will again be looking at ways we can add value to what the County Highways team already provide.

With only 4.3 metres from the underside of the deck to the road, the old bridge has frequently “seen action” in terms of bridge strikes from high-sided vehicles trying to pass underneath and we are designing the new structure to achieve maximum additional headroom as well as building collision protection measures into the new structure.”

We are in regular contact with all four Parish Councils in the Division and take away their concerns and problems, as well as yours as our residents reading this. We are actively working on behalf of all of our residents, as your elected Members.

For A Child's Christening

We are also working with our colleagues at County Hall to deliver the pledges we made in our manifesto. For a Child’s Christening (at which it was sung) If all the world’s a stage, then be the fool and speak your mind, without offence, to all, whatever parts they play. And in the school of wit find wisdom and the verve to call to strict account whatever seems to bear no sense, or right, or goodness in its heart. Life has its luck. The trick is not to care how much or little Fortune holds your part, but taking all with equal thanks and grace, in looking sideways at the world’s affairs, reveal the truths that lie behind the face and light the dark that coats us unawares. So, motley minded and obliquely just, be yet a touchstone in whom all may trust.

Sunflower Spectacular In Kirby Muxloe Article by Rosemary Stead

Kirby Muxloe school pupils were some of the first to plant sunflower seeds this year with the aim of turning the village bright and colourful this summer. After two years of Covid and the tragic events in Ukraine, the community is looking to bring some hope and raise a smile by filling Kirby Muxloe with sunflowers. At the start of term, using donations of pots, seeds and compost, each child in the school was able to plant two seeds and take them home with encouragement to plant them in their front gardens for all to see. Similar packs are on offer at AA Moore and Son and Kirby Muxloe Library for a small donation which will go to supporting the Fun Day and Scarecrow Trail on September 10th and 11th. All profits from that weekend will go to local charities. For further details about the Sunflower Spectacular please contact either Sue on 0116 2394809 Rosemary at rrmrsteady@aol.com or Amy at amymcdowall@live.com

Ozzy O’shea County Councillor

T: 0116 2394336 M: 07808585825 E: ozzyoshea@hotmail.com Bus Service Improvement Plan Funding Turned Down. The County Council were told to bid for money from the government for the bus service improvement plan. I can confirm that our bid was around £58m from Government over 3 years, but as outlined in the recent Cabinet report that was completely contingent on the county council being able to draw on additional funding from central government Councillor Ozzy O’Shea, Leicestershire County Council’s cabinet lead member for highways and transport, said: “Once again we are extremely disappointed Leicestershire has been overlooked in a bid for Government transport funding. “The announcement that we will receive no Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) money is a blow because bus services in the county have suffered during the pandemic and support from the Government is vital if we are to protect and improve them. “Although our bid was a strong one, demand for funding by other councils considerably outstripped the pot of money available. The Government has advised us to bid again once more funding becomes available. “We are far from alone in being turned down. Only 31 of the 79 BSIP bids by councils were funded and we have missed out alongside other rural authorities such as Lincolnshire, Cumbria and Suffolk. We have already raised the Government decision with local MPs. “We have asked the Department for Transport to explain why the bid was turned down and we can then consider our next steps.” The Leicestershire County Council (Various Roads, the Borough of Hinckley & Bosworth) Consolidation Order 2017 (Bancroft Way, Ratby) (amendment 22) Order 202 1. reported to Action Fraud involve fraudsters connecting remotely to a victim’s computer. Never allow remote access to your computer following an unsolicited call, text message or browser pop-up. How do remote access tool scams work? Remote access tool scams will often begin with a browser popup saying that your computer is infected with a virus, or with a call from someone claiming to be from your bank saying that they need to connect to your computer in order to cancel a fraudulent transaction on your account. Criminals will try to persuade the victim to download and connect via a remote access tool, which allows the criminal to gain access to the victim’s computer or mobile phone. If the victim allows the criminal connection via the tool, they are able to steal money and access the victims banking information.

The easiest way to change the identity of a stolen vehicle or avoid speeding tickets and parking tickets is to fit stolen number plates.

The City of London Police advise: Only install software or grant remote access to your computer if you’re asked by someone you know and trust, such as a friend or family member, and never as a result of an unsolicited call, browser pop up, or text message.

Please be aware by using security screws to attach your vehicle’s number plate’s makes it harder for thieves to get your number plate.

This month Action Fraud launched a new national awareness campaign about remote access scams. The City of London Police, explains more. More than £50 million was lost last year to scams where victims were tricked into handing over control of their computer or smartphone to criminals. New data from Action Fraud, the national reporting centre for fraud and cybercrime, reveals that 20,144 people fell victim to scams where they were persuaded to grant criminals remote access to their device. The complaints relate to the intrusion into the next field. Chris has raised this with the Planning Enforcement Team. He asked them to open a case, which they have done. We have also spoken to a representative of Lagan homes. They have assured us that the further work in the adjoining field was to install a sustainable drainage system (SUD's) which is permitted as they are using the adjoining fields for storage of development equipment and materials. Local Development Plan. Residents will be aware that the Local Plan submitted by the LibDem Administration , although previously delayed for a year, is not currently being supported by LCC. The County Council have serious concerns regarding the plan's Highways and Education infrastructure. A question has been submitted to the next Planning committee which is on May 10th. The question asks whether HBBC has sought legal opinion given LCC's stance on this draft Local Plan. The response is somewhat evasive mentioning the Government's request to increase the number of homes to be supplied but

However , Chris has further probed Chris Brown , the new Planning Manager at HBBC , in regard to the Local Plan and he has admitted that it needs more work, so therefore it seems like it will be delayed again. EYFS - Vicky The Vet This half term our topic has been all about ‘Pets’. As part of our topic we were very lucky to have a visit from a real vet! Vicky the Vet came to speak to us about all the different pets she has looked after including giraffes and chimpanzees during her adventures as a vet in Africa and Twycross zoo. She also showed us some x-rays from different animals and we had to guess which animals they were. After she spoke to us about caring for pets she showed us how to do an operation on a toy dog and we even got the chance to dress up as some of the people who help vets. We all enjoyed finding out about what vets do and practicing in our vets role play.

The Patient Participation Group Ratby Surgery Article by Joan Hawkins

Below you will see the latest update from Dr Ogle at Ratby Surgery with regards to the new build and as we promised to do you will find information about two other members of the Ratby Surgery Team . The PPG is really pleased that our doctors are doing alll they can to develop a multidisciplinary team to meet the needs of the patients. Ratby Premises Update Unfortunately due to some highways issues, the start date on site has been postponed slightly, but it has been finally confirmed that work should be in progress by the middle of May as opposed to the end of April as we previously hoped. We can not wait until work starts and we will keep all patients updated via the Local and on our Facebook Page. Clinical Pharmacists in GP practices Ratby Surgery PPG have been talking to the practice about other clinical staff that work in the practice to support patients and GPs and would like to share some information about what they do to raise awareness with all patients. What are clinical pharmacists and why might I speak to them instead of my GP? Clinical pharmacists are pharmacists who work in GP practices along side GPs and Nursing teams. They can deal with a wide range of medical and medication issues depending on their training. They help the patients and the practice by being able to speak to patients about side effects or concerns they might have with their medications, suggest alternatives and arranging for prescriptions to go to your local pharmacy, much in the same way your GP would. This helps to free up your GP for more severe or complex medical problems that patients contact the surgery about, which helps everyone to be seen sooner. Who are the clinical pharmacists at Ratby? Ratby surgery have two clinical pharmacists working within the team. Deepa has been working with the surgery since late 2019 and has a specialist interest in diabetes. A lot of our patients with diabetes will already have spoken to Deepa over the last couple of years regarding their diabetes care, especially if there were any medication adjustments that were required. She also looks after a lot of high risk medication monitoring and reviews within the practice.

Staying One Step Ahead Of Hayfever Article by Gary Trickett

We all look forward to the warmer spring and summer months, but if you’re one of the many people in the UK affected by hayfever – as many as 20% of us are, you won’t want to hang up your hanky just yet. An allergic reaction such as hayfever can be explained as an excessive reaction to a normally harmless substance. The immune system identifies the harmless substance, in this instance pollen, as dangerous, and produces an antibody called IgE, which triggers the production of histamine. Histamine is an inflammatory chemical that causes an array of unpleasant symptoms, including running nose and eyes, itching and burning in localised areas such as in the throat, nose and eyes, puffiness, swelling and mucus formation. Grass pollen is by far the biggest trigger, affecting up to 95% of hayfever sufferers. Happily there are a number of measures you can take to stay one step ahead. Keep your body as toxin-free as possible by avoiding junk foods, caffeine and alcohol, and drink plenty of water. Avoid dairy foods as they cause mucus formation that can

Rachel has been with the surgery since 2021 for three days a week. She supports a lot of patients with general medication queries and advise and adjust medications for those with high blood pressure to ensure it is controlled. She also deals with medication monitoring within the practice. If you would like to know more about the role of the Patient Participation Group please do contact Sheila Adcock at the surgery. We are very keen to have a group that truly reflects the demography of the Doctors patient list.

exacerbate hayfever symptoms, and keep your intake of refined sugar low. Make sure you’re sleeping well. Whilst scientists are still trying to figure out the exact relationship between sleep and the immune system, studies show that sleep helps to shift the balance of anti-inflammatory proteins so that the immune system can recognise and respond better to bugs and allergens, which may help to reduce the severity of your symptoms. Approximately two weeks before your usual symptoms kick in, take Luffa operculata twice daily. Pollinosan Hayfever Tablets from A.Vogel contain seven tropical herbs, including Luffa operculata and Galphimia glauca, to help with allergy to grass and tree pollen. They are non-drowsy and so will not affect your ability to drive or use machinery. A nasal spray is also available for immediate relief. If your eyes are particularly sensitive to hayfever try Pollinosan Hayfever Eye Drops. With hyaluronic acid and chamomile, they provide a soothing solution for red, burning, itchy eyes as a result of hayfever-causing allergens, and can be used with contact lenses and glasses. Finally, a bit of detective work will also help you to outsmart your pollen-shaped foe. Stay up to date with the latest pollen information in your local area by checking your 5-day pollen forecast. The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group Article by Judith Upton

The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group generally meets 6 times a year, and membership is open to all. Details of the dates of meetings, together with the topics that will be covered, are shown on the notice board in Kirby Muxloe Library and on our website, which is www.kirbymuxloelocalhistorygroup.org For further details, please see our website. Our next meeting will take place on Tuesday 17th May at 7:30pm. The speaker will be the well-known historian Peter Liddle, M.B.E., former County Archaeologist. The subject is “The Vikings in Leicestershire”. The talk will be followed by a short A.G.M. Membership subscriptions of £10 will be due. Talking with John Shipman, a former long-time resident of Ratby Several weeks ago, not long after the interview with Bob Pendery, we received an email from John Shipman of Cropston. As usual, never one to miss an opportunity of talking to someone with memories of their life in one of our villages, I picked up the phone. Two weeks later, I was off to Cropston to meet John and Sylvia, his wife. What I didn’t realise at the time was that John’s family had been licensees of the Bull’s Head in Ratby for many years and that he grew up living in the pub. After a warm welcome, we sat down in one of the rooms of his lovely bungalow and started to talk.

John Shipman with Ted Walsgrove, licensee of the Bull's Head at Ratby c1938

John’s Story I was born in Ratby on 20th March 1934, at around 11pm. I was delivered by Dr Jones, who many of us will remember well. My father was a county cricketer and played for Leicestershire (Alan W. Shipman). When he retired from cricket, he had a house built for the family by Shipman’s the builders, costing £1,000. We named it “Inglenook” and it is on Station Road, set back from the road and not far from the entrance to Danehill. The Fletcher’s lived next door to us, Madam Norah L.R.A.M. (Mrs Fletcher) taught the piano. I was never a pianist but remember getting hit on the knuckles with a ruler because I was playing the wrong notes – I gave up pretty quickly! Within two years, dad took over the Bull’s Head from Ted Walsgrove, my mother’s uncle. I was told that the pub had been in the hands of our family for many years. Previous publicans were Preston’s and Gregory’s, who were all related. Last year, I found an inventory of stock taking and valustion as my grandfather took over the pub in 1901, so I deposited it with the lady who is now the licensee of the Bull’s Head. Really, my education took place in the Bull’s Head. I was brought up during the war and I remember quite a lot of incidents happening there. There was a big club room on the first floor. One day, we had a visit from a lady named Miss Pond; she came to the pub bringing with her 7 evacuees and a dog, and as we had the space, we had to take them all in. I remember one called Arthur Bott and another, Ronnie Ravenhill. At some point in their stay, one of them said in a Birmingham accent (John does a very good likeness: J.U.) “Mr Shipman, there are strange things in the field eating your grass, what do they do? “Well”, said my dad “they produce milk”. They were amazed! They couldn’t believe it; they’d never seen cows before! Henry Freeman, the butcher, kept his beasts up there in the field. Eventually the evacuees left and then my aunt and uncle moved in followed by the Hawkins family. Ted Hawkins was really a mentor to me and many other people. He’d take us on nature walks up Burrough’s Road, pointing out hips and haws which we collected for the War Effort and teaching us about the wildlife. I also remember Freddie (Nippit) Moore. After he came out of the forces, he joined his wife and daughter at the Post office and grocery store. When my mother put in an order for groceries, he would always say “I’ll nip it in later”, hence the nickname. Myself and my friends were often recruited by Nippit to deliver the Christmas mail. Another interesting guy was Billy Bishop. Harold Lemon was the village bookmaker, and Billy was his runner. Harold used to do 6d bets in the Bull’s Head and elsewhere; there was no shop, just Harold. One day a new policeman came to the village, who was a keen as mustard; someone said to him if you want to get that Billy Bishop, he’ll be in the Bull’s Head on

28 | www.openboxpromotions.co.uk/news

Saturday at about one o’clock. He keeps betting slips under his hat, you’ll catch him red-handed! The policeman didn’t realise that he was being set up- I can see it now. Billy arrives at the pub, covered in cement dust (he worked at Alexandra Stone) and orders his pint, the policeman approached “-Got you Billy Bishop – you’ve betting slips under your hat”. Billy replied “No I haven’t”. This continued for a short time and then the policeman banged Billy’s head. Well, egg yolk was streaming down his face, it mixed with the cement dust which made it worse!! It was a setup; the poor policeman shrank!! There were no betting slips, just 3 pigeons’ eggs! I was brought up in the era of Coronation Street, everyone met in the pub. I remember Elsie Ingle and Emma Argyle, they were the first ladies to drink pints of beer, but only in the snug where they couldn’t be seen by the men. They were “secret drinkers”. I’d liken them to Minnie Cauldwell and Ena Sharples with my mum as Annie Walker. I remember some of the school teachers - Miss Hounam particularly as she slapped me across the ears once, that was concerning the story of the burnt treacle tart! I can still remember it today. We were having our school lunch and having finished the main course, the pudding duly arrived. I happened to be in the corner of the room, there was a long table with lots of people one side or the other, and I was at the bottom, trapped! The burnt treacle tart came down one side and of course ended up with me. I was creating “I don’t want this burnt treacle tart” and then Polly Hounam hit me across the ear. I then licked the custard of the top and put the tart in my pocket. Of course, the school is very near the Bull’s Head and so after dinner, I ran home with a few tears and said to my mum “Look what they’ve given me, burnt tart, and then I got hit on my ear by your W.I. friend! We fed the treacle tart to the hens, but even they wouldn’t eat it! When I was young, we formed a football team; I had the football and William Ball, the farmer next door, had fields. We created Ratby Athletic, Ratby Swans, Ratby United - my uncle used to say it was Ratby Excited!! We trained on liquorice imps because they kept you nice and warm. Now and again, we used to have a game, Station Road versus Markfield Lane. We used to play on Motty’s stile, the fields up there. I remember a chap named Derek Underwood, we called him “Scuddy”. He couldn’t afford any boots and so played in his Wellies. He said “Don’t bother about me boots, I can dribble as well as Stanley Matthews in these wellies”. We also used to play on the reccy. The Black and Blue Wars – with Kirby Muxloe. K.M. had a speedway team named Kirby Kings and Ratby didn’t. We tried to get a speedway cycle team together, but we were never any good. I may be exaggerating a little bit but somehow or other we went along and damaged their wheels – it was the only way we could beat them! For some reason, I was supposedly the ring leader. Next thing that happened, an anonymous note was pushed under the door at the Bull’s Head. It said “we’re coming to get you, John Shipman, you and your gang, it’ll be the Black and Blue wars! - Black for you and blue for us” Luckily, they had forewarned us and so we were prepared with turnips and mangles which we threw at them from our “den”upstairs, at the back of the pub. They never came near us again. There are so many other things to remember, the fish and chip shop on Burrough’s Road, playing whip and top, kiss chase at school, the winter of ’47 with the longest slide ever on the school playground; being barred from the cinema for three weeks (a firework, not mine!) and V.E. Celebrations in the Bull’s Head carpark. Cutty Plant – he was an absolute wizard when curing domestic animals, he was a self-taught medicine-man. Lastly, the American airmen with their bicycles, doughnuts and chewing gum. (For the full article, see our website – it is full of memories of Ratby years ago).

A Work In Progress Solo Exhibition At Sock Gallery Article by Liz Black Dowding

I'm a local artist and am having my first solo exhibition at the Sock Gallery, Loughborough from Thursday 21st April to Saturday 4th June. I won the chance to show my work after my painting Snow Hare was voted People's Choice in the Sock Gallery Summer Open Exhibition in 2018. Initially my own exhibition was scheduled for May 2020, but due to Covid and lockdown, it is only now becoming a reality! I have been continuing to paint and have a collection of over 70 pieces of work to be viewed. I think that the two-year wait has been useful in terms of quality and quantity! I have always been interested in art and trained as a graphic designer, but had moved away from graphics to concentrate on illustrating and watercolour painting. My work has been used for books, textiles, ceramics and most recently, for the greetings industry. My work has featured on cards, gift wrap, gift boxes and most paper products worldwide. I have also trained in adult teaching and am running workshops in Loughborough. In 2018 I had a renewed love of painting on a larger scale and started using acrylics on canvas and board. I began by creating paintings of my most loved places in Cumbria and the Lake District. Winning the People's Choice at the Sock Gallery Open exhibition gave me more confidence to keep working in this medium, and the chance of a solo exhibition, which was both terrifying and exciting. All my work is very personal, and I strive to create the beauty I see in landscapes and nature. More recently my work has been looking at the play of light on landscapes, the drama and contrast that it creates. There is also the theme of light breaking through in the dark, which is how I feel about life in general. The exhibition will show a wide variety of work showing local scenes, Cumbria, and the Lake District. As well as original work there will be a range of printed gifts and greetings cards on sale.

for an Oasis Treatment as it helps your soil to make the best use of any available moisture, meaning you’ll need to water up to 80% less. Our popular Oasis Treatment now features an innovative, highly concentrated seaweed extract which has proven to have an almost immediate visual effect on the colour of your lawn. At this time of year, we also recommend implementing a regular mowing regime to help your lawn be the best it can be. Dry, sunny days are the best conditions for mowing, however it’s important that your mower blades are kept sharp or replaced when needed to avoid causing damage to the grass plant. It is also important, especially during the summer months, that your grass isn’t cut too short as this will weaken it, attracting unwanted weeds. When dry, we advise raising the height of your cut from 1” up to 2” and give it a good drink the day after mowing. Let’s create the lawn we both love.
