Parkinson’s Disease has so many variations that no one can really predict the way it will progress or how long this will take. It sometimes seems that every person with Parkinson’s is really quite unique in their symptoms and conditions. What all realise is that every day has to be treasured and enjoyed as much as possible. John Kavanagh was diagnosed with the condition in 2010. twelve years ago. He was later to join and become a valued member of the Hinckley Parkinson’s Group and as his condition deteriorated he persevered with all his activities and became an inspiration to our members and indeed anyone else who was to meet him. Even when his body seemed as though it had let him down he was still able to smile, or have a twinkle in his eye to show appreciation of those around him.
John is standing on the right. After 30 years with the police he retired in 1994 and undertook various roles, like fundraising for LOROS and becoming a tutor on drink-drive rehabilitation courses. Throughout his life he supported Leicester City and had a great love of nature.
His condition did worsen in the last few years but his mind remained active and fully functioning. Despite his difficulties, with the care of his wife Janet [the Chair of the Hinckley Group] and close family friend Rachel, he was able to remain feeling involved in so many activities – exercise and choir particularly. Just a few days before his sudden but peaceful death in hospital on August 26th, he was on the front row of ‘Half A Sixpence’ at the Kilworth House Theatre enjoying the musical. So many messages have been sent to both Janet and Rachel to show how much love and support he generated.

John will be greatly missed obviously by his family and friends but also by the wider Parkinson’s Group, which had become an extended family for him. The inspiration he generated will continue and Janet is remaining as Chair to support and encourage all those with the illness together with their carers and families. Much of this is achieved through the fellowship of group activities and support for one another. No one needs to feel alone or isolated.

Parkinson’s does not respect an individual’s life achievements. So many well known personalities are known to have the condition. John, born in 1944, had grown up in Measham and had worked in the mines for five years before joining Leicestershire Police where he rose from a PC to Detective Superintendent. Many perhaps will remember him from the 1980s in ‘Crimewatch Midlands’, hosting with Peter Purves.
The Hinckley Group, regularly attended by over 50 members, continues to offer monthly meetings [October 9 and November 13], a monthly informal tea at the Stapleton Dobbies [October 17, November 21], weekly exercise, dance and singing sessions and monthly Nordic Walking, as well as other extra activities planned throughout the year. It’s almost time for ‘Kirby Muxloe’s Christmas Lights Switch On.’ So, get your woolly jumpers ready and come and join in the festive fun outside the Village Hall/Library on Saturday 26th November from 6:30–8:30pm. The winners of the Christmas colouring competition organised by Kirby Muxloe Parish Council will have the honour of switching on the glittering tree lights at 7:15pm. DJ Scott Bailye will host the evening of attractions which include Ratby Cooperative Mid-Band, Kirby Muxloe Primary School Choir, Santa Claus, Face Painting, Children’s Funfair Rides, Stalls, Refreshments and much more! Any donations received on the evening will be donated to Menphys, who strive for a future full of equal choices and opportunities for disabled children, young people and their families, empowering them to live as ordinary lives as possible. Please note that the car park by the Village Hall/Library will close at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday 26th November 2022 to enable the festive preparations to get underway.

Save Our Library Campaign On the 17th October 2022 the Chair of Trustees of Ratby Community Library received an email from Leicestershire County Council containing these magic words 'I am pleased to confirm that the County Council is happy to support your request (to retain our lease) and we will now remove the termination notice.'

The email went on to say that it was ' clear that the Group had taken significant steps to improve the sustainability of the library.' This decision means that, as long as we can sustain the current progress we have made in revitalizing the finances of the library following the end of all Council financial support,because of the work of the volunteers, the generous aid from local people and businesses WE ARE STAYING OPEN! One Of Our Benefactors: Ratby Community Group's Very First Ratby Scarecrow Festival. The Community group, a new and hugely enthusiastic village charity group worked tirelessly to organise and produce Ratby's full weekend of scarecrow activities! Halloween Children's Craft Event -Spooky Fun and Games! Over 40 children enjoyed a super variety of crafts and messy play, stories and songs at this Halloween themed afternoon. Just like last year, painting, food decorating and messy play were all available but the addition of face painting meant plenty of smiling spidery faces went home. Healthcare Course Provider Hires New Trainer By Scarlet Lewitt
Meduc8ion, a healthcare course provider, is pleased to announce the hire of Heidi Tanton as their latest course trainer. Heidi will be working from both of Meduc8ion’s training centres, based in Hinckley and Leicester, training individuals in ear anatomy, otoscopy, and earwax removal. She will be delivering courses for Meduc8ion fortnightly and spending the rest of her time fulfilling her duties as an audiologist. “I feel very strongly about teaching individuals how to deliver safe and efficient hearing care. It is something that I’ve always taken an interest in, but I didn’t want to stop being an audiologist,” Heidi said. “The role that I have undertaken with Meduc8ion is ideal because it will allow me to explore more of the training side to audiology, while spending the rest of my time in clinic as an audiologist. It is my aim to be the change that I want to see in the world, and I’m looking forward to bringing my expertise and clinical knowledge to Meduc8ion.” Heidi comes to Meduc8ion with a strong background in audiology. She acquired a first-class degree in BSc (Hons) Healthcare Science (Audiology) from the University of Leeds and has spent the best part of several years advising and assisting patients in need of hearing care. She spent two years working for the pharmaceutical giant, Boots, as a Hearing Aid Dispenser (HAD) before moving to Novus Health Ltd as a Senior Clinical Audiologist. During her time at Novus, Heidi worked for the Any Quality Provider (AQP) scheme; a type of NHS contract which allows non-NHS organisations to provide NHS services. She recently set up her own business for hearing aid dispensing and helps the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) sector on the weekends.

How the days are drawing in now, and the trees looking somewhat bereft, poor things. We hope that you are all managing with the colder weather and the need to be careful about putting the heating on. It all reminds us of days long gone – just hope we don’t get those icy patterns on the insides of the windows – some of you will remember those days. Magical when we were kids, not quite so magical now! Don’t forget that the Library is offering itself as a warm space for you to be if it’s all getting too much. Just drop in when you feel like it. You will be made very welcome and won’t have to do a thing other than keep warm. Refreshments are available with free top-ups. There’s company if you want it, or you can just sit quietly by yourself – you decision, no questions asked.
Here at Leicester Animal Aid we have a few animals that have longer stays than others, and Ralph here is one of them. He is a loveable 9-year-old Husky, and has been with us now since June. Even Santa has been helping us in our search for his furrever home and called in to visit recently! Ralph is a clever boy, and very talkative. He needs a secure garden with a high fence as he likes to jump and will need a strong walker. He is a handsome boy, and you might notice that he has different coloured eyes – a condition called heterochromia which is common in certain breeds including Huskies. We think it makes him even more special and we are hoping to find him a responsible and loving home really soon. If Ralph doesn’t find his home in time for the big day, then he and all the other animals in our care over the Christmas period will receive a gift which will be thanks to generous members of the public who donate to our Christmas Appeal. Every year, we care for more than 300 dogs and cats who are lost, abandoned, neglected, unwanted or relinquished because their owners can no longer look after them.
N’UKES GIG What a great evening, thoroughly enjoyable. The N’Ukes gave a highly professional performance – sound, lights, excellent virtuosity, a great selection of music setting people dancing, all topped off by ploughman’s suppers and puddings – absolutely everything went! Many thanks to all the volunteers who helped out (especially with the washing up the next morning!), and to the Parish Council for the loan of chairs. And of course most especial thanks to the N’Ukes themselves, who gave their services as a gift to the Charity. There will be a repeat performance before too long!

We have had a professional garden designer to draw up plans, and very elegant they are too, really lovely. It is planned for the larger of the two areas to be for families, with the smaller (to the left) as a restful place for adults and older people to relax, chat and enjoy the sensory experience (though these are not of course mutually exclusive!). We are currently finalising the plans and getting quotations for the work. At that point, we will hold an open event for the community to see the plans and make comments. It goes almost without saying that this will be an expensive venture for us, and we will be reliant on grants and donations from the community. The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group Article by Judith Upton
The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group generally meets 6 times a year, and membership is open to all. Details of the dates of meetings, together with the topics that will be covered, are shown on the notice board in Kirby Muxloe Library and on our website, which is www.kirbymuxloelocalhistorygroup.org. “Memories” meetings unfortunately remain suspended, we are hoping to start them in the new year. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 15th November at 7:30pm. Unfortunately, Felicity Austin, our speaker for the November meeting, has needed to cancel due to unforeseen circumstances. We have decided to put together some very interesting facts about Kirby Muxloe Castle. Most people are aware of the story of Lord Hastings and Richard III, but do not know much about the castle over the last 100 years. Val, the village archaeology warden and co-chair has access to all the artifacts which were found in the moat when it was drained in 1912. Come along and learn about what was found, the pageant of 1953 held in the castle grounds and more! Visitors are always most welcome. Full yearly membership £10, plus an entrance fee of £2 paid at each visit. Visitors £5 entrance for each single session. Talking to Jill Hurd née Pearson and her husband Derry. A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of going down to Ratby to visit Jill and her husband Derry. Jill and I immediately realised that we knew each other from 50/60 years ago when we were both young and living in Ratby. Jill wanted to tell me about her father Joe, who was a member of the St John’s Ambulance Brigade. We talked about her father’s work which was very interesting and I was amazed at the number of cups and trophies on display – all won by her father in various competitions. After talking about Joe, we eventually started to reminisce about life in Ratby years ago. Firstly Joe. Joe Pearson was born in Ratby in 1907. His family at the time lived in the Stamford Arms Yard. Years ago, there was a public house named the Earl of Stamford Arms which was in a house just past the present fish and chip shop. There was an entrance to the yard between the pub and the next house and Joe’s father’s family lived up there. They then moved to a little row of terraced houses, opposite Porter’s Carpets on Station Road. Joe had two brothers and a sister and they lived with their mum and dad in a two up, two down; that’s how many people lived in those days. Joe was too young to fight in WWI and when WWII came around, he was too old to fight and so at that time, he joined the Home Guard. In around 1950, he joined the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade. His interest in the St John’s goes back to the time when the family were in Mablethorpe, enjoying a well-earned holiday. Joe’s wife tripped on a slab that was sticking up from the ground and cut her knee. They didn’t know what to do until a kind person brought over a cloth to try to stem the bleeding; this made Joe realise that it would have been much less traumatic if he had known what to do. From that day, he decided he would join the St John’s. Joe joined St John’s in 1950 and loved every minute of his time there. As a service member, he went on numerous displays and in 1956 he went to Hyde Park in London, for the Queen’s inspection. All the St John’s men stood in rank and the Queen went around them standing up in the back of a Land Rover. On becoming a Superintendent, he was presented with a special medal, but as he was not one for showing off, when a photographer arrived to take his photo for the Tubes magazine (where he worked for many years), he didn’t want to wear the medal. Jill persuaded him by telling him that he really did have to put on his uniform and medal, it was expected, so eventually he did! He was also a member of the Leicestershire Yeomanry and in 1924 was present when the War Memorial on Old John, near to the Old John Tower in Bradgate Park was unveiled. The memorial was built to commemorate the members of the Leicestershire Yeomanry who fell in the Boer War and also WWI. Another memorial plaque was added after WWII. The memorial became a statutory listed building in 1984 and is Grade II listed. The St John’s Ambulance Brigade held many competitions and at competition time, the whole group travelled up to London and competed with teams from all over the U.K. They were taken into a special room, group by group, and presented with a mock-up accident, together with patients covered in fake blood. The team had to take charge, calling for ambulances, take care of the injured and deal with passers-by and witnesses. They were marked according to their performance. Joe’s team won many plaques and trophies, which are now on display in Jill’s house. As Joe was superintendent, he was allowed to keep them all. Jill

remembers that a man from Kirby often came down to Ratby to act as “the patient”; she thinks it was one of the Bosworth brothers. The pretend patient was frequently covered in fake blood! Joe worked at TI Tubes at Desford, but before that he had been employed at Desford Aerodrome. Joe met Joe Pearson at work in the medical Amy Johnson, who in 1933, room at TI Tubes, Desford accompanied by her husband, was the first woman to fly across the Atlantic. This was a particularly dangerous flight as for most of the time they were very far from any landmass. As Joe was working at the Aerodrome at the time, he was able to gain her autograph when she landed at Desford. Joe then went on to work at TI Tubes Desford, which he joined on 6th October 1941 and was their first employee. Initially he worked as a store keeper, then in 1947 he moved on to become transport manager. Eventually, in 1955, when it became evident that he was a very experienced St John’s Ambulance Brigade Joe Pearson, member, he started to work in wearing his TI Tubes works surgery. Joe medal when worked nights and was in made a charge of the medical room, Superintendent always patching someone up in the St John’s who had injured themselves Ambulance whilst working. Once, he Brigade. almost delivered a baby, but Courtesy of Jill the ambulance arrived just in Hurd time! Joe never had a car and cycled to work every day.
Jill was born in 1942, when Joe and the family moved to a house near to “Sunny Row”. I had never heard of this name, but Jill told me that if you start off at the off-licence on Station Road and turn right to go down the road, there is a house adjoining the off-licence and another house standing at an angle; there used to be a wide entry way there that led to Sunny Row. She remembers the Foggin family and Aggy Dean, who was the wife of the rag and bone man, who used to go around pushing a baby’s pram collecting old rags; they all lived on Sunny Row. As people got to know that Joe was in the St John’s Ambulance Brigade, when a child had fallen over or been hurt in some way, there would be a knock at the front door, with someone asking for Mr Pearson and could he just look at their injured child. He had a cupboard in the house that was full of all sorts of bandages. In 1976, Joe was made a “serving brother” of the St John’s Ambulance Brigade. He went up to London and was presented with his medal by Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester. There is so much more to say about Joe Pearson – he smoked a pipe, he loved gardening and loved going to the Railway pub with his friends on a Friday night, I could go on a lot longer. Lastly, Jill and her husband talked about life years ago in Ratby. Jill remembered going with her parents to the Bull’s Head and always sitting in the rear conservatory, which is where people sat if they had children with them. Mr Shipman (Alan) used to come out to have a chat with Joe and give Jill a silver threepenny piece for her money box. She still has them today. Derry and Jill remembered the night of “terror”, when the Teddy boys from Anstey arrived at the Majestic Cinema. All the girls were so frightened that they hid in the toilets. It appears that the Teddy boys almost caused a riot, running round and round the cinema followed by Sid Deveraux, the Special Policeman! Derry said that poor Len Crump, the manager, didn’t know what to do! They remembered that sometimes men used to try to swing the lead and attempt to obtain a sick note from the doctor. However, it only worked if Dr Jones was on duty; Dr Alexander could see what they were up to immediately! So many memories, the slaughter house next to the butcher’s shop with water running down the road when the premises were being swilled out, the cows driven down Main Street at milking time. Girls putting on lipstick after they left home and rubbing it off before returning. Going to the Church or the Chapel on a Sunday evening and meeting up afterwards, either in one of the houses for coffee or occasionally going to Banners Café at the top of London Road, Leicester, for more coffee. When that happened, they either piled into Martin Brooks’ van, where sheep and hay had been hastily swept out, or occasionally in a car belonging to Trevor Grewcock’s uncle, who lived in Kirby. It was all so innocent and just good fun – what a life to look back upon. Thank you so much Jill and Derry, I thoroughly enjoyed visiting your home and listening to your memories. Under proposals published on Monday (17 Oct), the money will be used to offer £1.5m emergency food and fuel support – triple the amount allocated last year – and will ensure 14,000 children across the county have free school meal vouchers during the Christmas, February half term and Easter holidays. The national funding takes the council’s wide-ranging support package to £14.8m and is on top of community fridges, innovative ‘green homes’ schemes, energy efficiency advice and help for foodbanks and charities, all of which is helping to bring down household bills.
October and the National offer date is 1 March (or next working day). Parents and carers: to maximise your opportunities, apply for three schools including the catchment school(s). It is never advised to only apply for one school, as this increases the risk of disappointment, resulting in upset and having to accept a school much further away. Infant to Junior transfers: The application window to transfer from Infant to Junior school is now open. Parents and carers will receive a letter inviting them to apply to transfer for entry 2023. Always apply for the linked Junior school to maximise likelihood of success. The closing date for infant to junior transfer is 15 January, the national offer date is 16 April (or next working day). Applications for a year-three place in a primary school will not be processed until late summer term, for entry 2023, as it will be considered a mid-term transfer. Service demand is unrelenting and expected to go up by £18m every year, excluding the impact of inflation. Bridge Demolition Puts Railway Project On Track! Andy Fillingham
Latest phase of ambitious railway connection project to create 18mile heritage line across the East Midlands. A railway bridge which has been a landmark in Loughborough for well over a century has been demolished. It is part of an ambitious scheme to create an eighteen-mile heritage railway attraction and take lorries off the roads at the same time. The original Great Central Railway bridge over the A60 Nottingham Road, in the northeast corner of the town was 125 years old and was clearly showing signs of old age! It has also been struck by careless lorry drivers many times. The modern day Great Central heritage Railway based in Leicestershire is working on a multimillion-pound project to ‘Reunify’ two halves of the line which were separated by British Railways in the 1970s. The bridge over the A60 is key to the project. However, it was beyond economic repair, so the difficult decision was made to remove the old bridge and replace it with a brand-new structure capable of carrying modern freight trains and heritage railway passenger services. Work began on Saturday 1st of October in the early hours of the
morning with ‘VolkerLaser’ as the lead contractor. The project has been championed by Friends of the Great Central Main Line, who have also helped co-ordinate the fundraising with The David Clarke Railway Trust, the Great Central Railway’s charitable partner. The new bridge will be carry two railway tracks. One will take trains to and from the national railway network, which could lead to heavy freight trains using it to access local businesses, removing traffic from the roads and delivering sustainable transport. The other track will carry the new connecting lines between the two halves of the Great Central Railway creating a heritage passenger line across Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire promoting sustainable tourism. The Great Central Railway placed the order in April, to beat rapidly rising costs but is still seeking to raise further funds to finish this part of Reunification and commit to future phases of the scheme. It was our Danny’s social worker that got me thinking about our family. She called to see Danny but, of course, he was in bed. Well, it was only 11 o’clock and he rarely gets up before 2. I asked her to come in and would she like a cup of tea while I woke our Danny up. I wanted her to know that we are a good family, not like some of the rough lot that live around here. Fat chance of Danny getting up, I thought, but what else could I do? The poor woman had come all that way, though she has a lovely car. (I wouldn’t mind driving round all day in a lovely car like that and chatting to people.) Anyway, as it turns out, she was brought up on this estate – moved away when she was a teenager, but she remembers the time when it was decent – before the shops had to be boarded up and when the gardens were all kept tidy.

She seemed a lot younger than me, but turns out I’m only five years older. Suppose I could look younger with a nice hairdo and some make-up. I don’t bother though, because I never go anywhere. And he’s always out. Usually down the pub with his cronies. Well, I have to stay here to make sure the kids are alright. That’s my job. I really don’t know what happened with our Danny. Just got in with the wrong crowd, I suppose. I’m hoping it’s just a blip and he sorts himself out. He’s the eldest, though he’s not mine. Well, not technically. No, he’s his and his first wife’s. I didn’t know he was married. First I knew was when she came round to my mam’s and left the two kids on the doorstep and black a bin liner with their clothes in. Right tatty stuff – wouldn’t give it houseroom! Danny was only one and such a cute baby, with curly blond hair and saucer eyes. His sister, Letisha-Mai (we call her Tish, it suits her much better) was just coming up to three and she was just as cute. Her mam came back for her after a week, but she didn’t want Danny. That made me love him more – poor little mite. We still see Tish – she loves coming here, she does, and she and Danny think the world of one another. ‘Course, they’re proper brother and sister and it does make a difference. They think the world of their dad too – though he could do more. Then there’s our five. Ben, Jessica and Joanne – twins number one and Thomas and Toby – twins number two. Well they’re all ours really – I’m just explaining. Then there’s Aaron – he’s only one and he is Thomas’ son, but Thomas is only seventeen now and his girlfriend was only fifteen when Aaron was born, so what was I to do? You can’t expect a girl of fifteen to bring up a baby! And her parents …. Well! She and Thomas don’t see one another now but Aaron can’t help that, can he? He’s absolutely gorgeous and such a good baby. He’s got lovely mocha skin, the biggest brown eyes and the widest smile showing his two baby teeth. His hair is proper Jamaican, like his mum’s family – though I doubt he will ever see them. The Social Worker called us a ‘blended’ family. Apparently, that’s the word for families like ours. I wasn’t sure whether she was being insulting. We’ve been called a lot of things! But, I looked it up – blended, I mean, and one of the things it said was “go well together; harmanize.” I’ll take that.

Senior Band A fabulous return to perform at the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain where the band performed at the Royal Albert Hall and were awarded the accolade of 17th best band in the UK.

Mid Band – Triumph At Pershore The Mid Band had an excellent day contesting on October 29th where the band did the Ratby Organisation proud by taking first place at the prestigious Wychavon Festival beating off 11 other bands. In addition the percussion team were adjudicated to be the best in the contest picking up another award.
