Why are GPs needing to work differently? GPs, their teams, and patients have faced an extremely challenging time during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite lockdown measures lifting the pandemic is still not over. Face-to-face contact has been limited across all NHS services to protect you and keep you safe from the risk of infection. We want to be honest with you. General practice will continue to struggle to meet the growing needs of patients. This isn’t the way we want it to be, but practices are open, and we are here for you when you need us.

Why are things different? To keep you and everyone else safe appointments are being triaged. This helps give you the type of appointment you need: – To be seen in person – A phone consultation – A video consultation – Help from your local pharmacy If you need to be seen face-to-face you will be.

Why do receptionists ask such personal questions? Not got a QR scanner or not working? Use this link: www.issuu.com/norwoodpress

Receptionists are a vital part of the practice team. Their questions are to ensure that you are seen by the right person at the right time, and all answers are kept confidential.

Why am I seeing someone who is not my GP? Not everyone needs to see a GP. Many practices now offer appointments with other healthcare professionals, including nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists, physician assistants, mental health workers and paramedics. This ensures you see the right person for your condition as quickly as possible.

Where else can I get help? Visit www.nhs.uk for advice on how to treat common symptoms or contact www.111.nhs.uk or dial 111 to speak to someone who can help. In a life-threatening emergency always call 999.

Your GP surgery needs your support, so it can be there to support you. We can’t meet this challenge alone. General practice desperately needs help from the Government.

Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually. But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased’s share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children’s inheritance is protected. This last point can be particular interest to couples who have come together and have children with different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensuring that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property, they can still sell the property and the proceeds to be used to purchase a new property, the terms of the Trust remain over the new property.

T: 0116 2394336 M: 07808585825 E: ozzyoshea@hotmail.com Road Closure Ratby Lane Kirby Muxloe. Residents Please Note Ratby Lane Come out of Ratby towards Kirby Muxloe will be closed from 25/10/21 to 28/11/21 and again in January from 10/01/22 to 21/01/22 this will have a major impact on Ratby and Groby residents wish to access the A47 Please see below. Advance Notice of a Temporary Regulation Order. A Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) is to be made for the following location Ratby Lane & Desford Road junction, Kirby Muxloe. The purpose of the TTRO is to allow MJ Evans acting on behalf of William Davis TTRO will incorporate a temporary road closure. The duration of the restriction is not anticipated to exceed a period of7weekscommencing on the 25/10/2021 until the 28/11/2021 then the 10/01/2022 until the 21/01/2022.The proposed alternative diversion route will be via: Desford Road, Desford Lane, Kirby Muxloe; Desford Lane, Ratby; Desford Lane, Botcheston Road, Markfield Lane, Desford; Markfield Lane, Thornton Lane, Bagworth & Thornton; Thornton Lane, Ratby; Ratby Lane, Launde Road, Markfield; Leicester Road (A50), Groby; Groby Road, Leicester Road, Glenfield; Groby Road, New Parks Way, Hinckley Road (A47), Leicester City; Ratby Lane, Leicester Forest East; Ratby Lane, Kirby Muxloe and vice versa. A Press Release will be issued to confirm these details approximately 2 weeks prior to the work starting. Ratby School Crossing. The school crossing has been without a school crossing warden for at least a couple of years if anyone is interested please contact the school or Leicestershire County Council Highways Department. The County Council have advertised this position several times. I arranged for all the approaching road marking and the crossing to be remarked out and painted during the summer. I have asked officers to look at any further safety measures including double yellow lines along the library side, but parked cars do have a traffic calming effect. The problem this village faces is that Main Street was built for horses and carts and not the type of traffic we face today. The road cannot be widened and the footpaths are narrow. The new developments will just add to the heavy traffic during rush hour times. SHIRE Environment Grant: Grants of up to £3,000 are available for community groups and organisations to deliver local projects and activities to improve Leicestershire’s environment. LCC is looking to support projects that improve the local environment through waste prevention and reuse to minimise the amount thrown away, reducing carbon and improving biodiversity. Although applications can be received at any time, the SHIRE Environment Grants scheme will operate a series of deadlines and decision meetings. The remaining deadlines for 2021 / 22 are outlined below: Friday 29th October 2021 with decisions made by Friday 26th November 2021 For further information please visit: www.leicestershirecommunities.org.uk/grants/environment-grant.html Don’t Get Scammed By This Fake Wetherspoon Meal Voucher Competition. Fake meal vouchers for Wetherspoon pubs are being promoted on Facebook, despite the chain shutting all its social media accounts in 2018. Facebook users who comment on the posts published by the fake Wetherspoon pages are told they will win meal vouchers if they receive comments from Wetherspoon. But these comments come from scammers who have set up the pages. The posts read ‘Congratulations for those of you who have received comments from us, you have the opportunity to win them’. You are then asked to like and share the post with your friends. Luckily, the fake profiles don’t have large followings unlike other competition scams we’ve warned about, but they do have the potential to reach a large audience. Over the past week, searches for ‘Weatherspoon’s Facebook scam’ have risen by 800% on Google, eclipsing earlier searches made when this scam circulated earlier in the year. We found two Facebook pages claiming to be legitimate Wetherspoon social media profiles, both sharing posts following the same format. Users are asked to ‘like’ and ‘share’ and then enter a competition by following a link to a ‘competition’ website. Once here, users are asked to click a button to enter their details and claim their prize.

Read more: www.which.co.uk/news/2021/09/dont-get-scammed-by-thisfake-wetherspoon-meal-voucher-competition/ - Which? Blue Badge Scams Following a recent report to Leicestershire Trading Standards, we would like to warn residents about blue badge application scams. Whilst a blue badge application is free (£10 if a badge is issued), some people can find the process a little daunting. This is when the scammers step in by offering to apply for a blue badge on your behalf. They use a variety of methods to con people into feeling that the application fee is money well spent, by using methods such as official-looking websites, convincing website addresses, and exaggerated claims about how hard the process is. The amount the scammers charge for submitting an application for a Blue Badge on your behalf varies, but it's normally around £50, and some don’t even forward your application on your behalf once you’ve paid. This could mean you have handed over your money for nothing and will still need to apply through the official channels yourself. Spotting a Blue Badge scammer is easy, if the website address doesn't end in GOV.UK or a local county council website (which will end in ‘gov.uk’ too), then it’s a scam. It doesn’t matter how official the website appears to be if it doesn’t end in gov.uk it’s not an official website and is almost certainly a scam. For further information from the official government website, please see below: www.gov.uk/apply-blue-badge NHS Covid-19 Scams As we approach winter, look out for potential NHS Covid-19 scams. In the past criminals have used text messages, phone calls, fake websites and even home visits to try and trick people into making a payment or handing over their financial information. This could be for things like the Covid pass, Covid jabs including the booster jab, and even the NHS app. Fraudsters will try and convince you that you have to "pay" for these things, but they are all available from the NHS free of charge. Remember the NHS will never: Ask for payment or bank details Arrive unannounced at your home Ask for copies of personal documents to prove your identity More information can be found on the NHS website links below; www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/covid-pass/ I would like to take this opportunity to thank residents for your continued support. Remember I am only an Email or a phone call away. I am always here to help in any way that I can. Kind Regards Ozzy O’shea. Always Working for you

T: 0116 2394336 M: 07808585825 E: ozzyoshea@hotmail.com Planning at HBBC. We are able to say with some dismay that of the 9 Planning Officers at HBBC, 8 are due to leave in October. That leaves us with 1 Planning Officer and 2 Enforcement Officers. The Administration have decided to bring in agency staff as Consultants but now we have a huge backlog of applications that are due for determination but will not happen and so , the applicants can sue for non- determination which you will pay for. Realistically, HBBC Planning's reputation is now so bad that we cannot recruit any decent officers hence the need for agency staff. The Local Plan is a working project that decides where housing can be allocated in all areas of our Borough as we have been asked to allocate 9.5k up until 2039. The LibDem Administration at HBBC have delayed this until August 2022 which means the rural areas are immediately at risk. Following a zoom meeting between both of us and a Planning Policy Officer and Cllr David Bill, Executive Member for Planning, it was explained to us that Officers contacted land owners to see if they were prepared to sell their land for housing. In terms of Ratby, we are a Key Rural Settlement and as such, Planning Policy Officers are looking for an 200 dwellings to be provided. We both explained that Ratby has already taken some 267 dwellings that got Planning permission this this year and as such , we have met their quota over and above. We got to see which area's were put forward by landowners such as the whole of the Burroughs to the north and land off Desford Lane which is subject to an imminent application for 225 houses. Both of these areas will not be going forward in the Local Plan as the Burroughs is our jewel in the crown and Desford Lane is adjacent to the Rothley Brook Flood Plain. Other areas were looked at and discounted but that will not stop any application coming in. Remembrance Parade. We are so pleased to announce that at last, the village of Ratby can have it's annual Parade due to the lifting of restrictions. Chris, as your Parade Marshal will again lead the Parade but there will be no Church Service this year. Instead, a ceremony will take place at the War Memorial on the 11th of the 11th at 11 o'clock which falls this year on a Thursday. On the 14th, a full Parade will take place starting at the top of

Danehill and march directly to the War Memorial where a shortened service will take place, names read , wreaths laid, hymns sung followed by the last Post. We march off at 10.20 am. It has been 2 long years since we all have had the chance to honour those who gave all. We are both sure that the residents will turn out but we have to say it is at your own risk as infection of Covid remains high. Gladman Proposal. Have your say on the Gladman proposal to put 225 houses on Desford Lane, Ratby. Previously we put the Gladman link in our article to allow residents to comment on the proposals. We have since been told the link did not work. Please use the following link. www.your-views.co.uk/ratby And Finally, Apple Day. Chris had the pleasure of attending the Ratby Apple Day organized by the Community Orchard Group. Lots of coring, squeezing, peeling and a host of other activities were done and it was very well attended. Well done to the Ratby Orchard Group and all it's volunteers to make a great day. Plus, it would be remiss of us not to mention Ratby Brass Band who took part in the National Championships and came fifth even beating Brighouse and Rastrick Band who shot to fame with the Floral Dance with a certain Sir Terry Wogan. Well done to you all, Ratby is very proud of you. Chris and Ozzy Working for you..

Osteoporosis In The Spotlight Article by Gary Trickett

Osteoporosis or brittle bones disease affects an estimated 200 million people worldwide. The disease weakens the bones meaning they fracture more easily, but because the condition develops over several years many people don’t realise they have osteoporosis until the first break occurs. Breakages can occur all over the body, but they are most common in the wrists, hips and spine. Whilst osteoporosis can affect both men and women, it’s around four times more common in women, and most common in women who have been through menopause, because women can lose bone density as a result of falling oestrogen levels. There’s plenty of ways you can support bone health, starting with what you eat. Vegetarian and vegan diets are associated with a lower risk of osteoporosis, in part because they are less acidic than diets rich in animal protein. Try switching to a plant-based diet or at least reducing your intake of animal protein. You should also cut down on highly processed and sugary foods as too much sugar can cause calcium to be secreted through the urine.

Silica, from the element silicon, is also understood to play an important role in bone health, as is Urtica or stinging nettle. Not a fan of nettle soup? Try A.Vogel’s Urticalcin with Urtica, calcium and silica.

Certain nutrients can also help. Vitamins C and K are crucial for healthy bones, and of course there’s calcium. It’s the most abundant mineral in the body and with 99% of it found in bones and teeth, is hugely important in the fight against osteoporosis. Try to eat four servings of calcium-rich foods a day. If you find dairy products such as yoghurt, skimmed milk and cheese, hard to digest, spinach, broccoli, beans, peas, sardines and pilchards are also excellent calcium providers, and they contain heaps of magnesium, which is important for calcium absorption.

Finally, do schedule in regular bone density scans especially if there is a history of osteoporosis in your family.

8 | www.openboxpromotions.co.uk/news

Exercise can also help, especially high impact exercise, such as jogging, power walking and step aerobics, and strength-training exercises such as jumps, weights, sit-ups and back strengthening exercises. It doesn’t have to be anything too strenuous – a daily 20 minute walk is a great start.

Messy church is for families - these can be a parent(s) and children, grandparents with granchildren or aunts and uncles with neices and nephews – it is a chance for us all to explore the stories from the bible in an interactive and fun way. We meet between 3 and 5 pm, beginning in the church hall with craft activities (some led by helpers from the church, some for parents to do with their children indepenedently). We then move into church for a story and song before going to back to the hall for refreshments (cake and drinks) and a chance to chat together. In December we have our Messy Christingle – where our crafts include both Christmas decorations and christingle making before going into church for a short christingle service. If you would like to know more please contact Colleen Kitchen : messy@ standrewslfe.org.uk or just turn up on the first Sunday of the month.

Ollie, Tye And Freckles Are On The Hunt For Their Perfect Match

Lifetime Mortgage Myths

Article by Nicole Blair

Last month we looked at Lifetime Mortgage Myths, and this month we look at Lifetime Mortgage Pros & Cons.

At Leicester Animal Aid we do everything we can to make sure the dogs and cats who come into the Centre receive good food, veterinary care and individual attention to help them feel secure and loved.

It’s important Mortgage to fully understand how& equity release or a lifetime mortgage Lifetime Pros Cons

We care for more than 400 cats and dogs every year who are lost, abandoned, unwanted or given up because their owners can no longer care for them. We try our hardest to make each animal’s stay with us as enjoyable and stress-free as possible. However, the Centre isn’t a substitute for a loving home environment and we want each one of our dogs and cats to find a new, forever family. Occasionally, it can take a bit longer for some cats and dogs to find the right home. We match each one based on their individual needs to new homes – acting a bit like a dating agency! Ollie, male, Domestic Short Hair, 6 years old He may look like a tough guy but he is very friendly and loves fuss - he just doesn't know how to model for the camera. His name is Ollie and he is still looking for his forever home. He enjoys being outdoors (when the sun is out you can see the brown in his fur shine through) and he is looking for a calm, adults-only home. Ollie is a bit shy here at the Centre as he prefers to be at home but if you give him some time, his personality will blossom. Ollie came into our care as he was struggling to cope with some new changes at home. Ollie is going to need an understanding owner who is willing to help him build his confidence. We are sure once he is out of this environment, and settled into a suitable home he will grow in personality. A more rural area would be best for him as he likes to come and go as he pleases. Tye, Female, Domestic Short Hair, 13 years old Freckles, Male, Domestic Short Hair, 13 years old Freckles and Tye came into our care together sadly due to their owner passing away. They are two peas in a pod and will need to be rehomed together. Tye and Freckles are sweet, gentle-natured older kitties looking for a forever home to spend their golden years. They're not big fans of shelter life so they come off as fairly shy at first but they love a good chin scratch and bit of fuss. Given a lot of one-to-one time, both do enjoy a scratch on the head so we are looking for someone willing to help their personalities blossom. Tye leads the way and if she is comfortable with us then Freckles follows her lead. Tye will be a lap cat in her new home! They are going to need a quiet home with teenagers and adults to enjoy their golden years and have the space to build up their confidence.

RATBY PRIMARY SCHOOL Year 2

Road Safety Around Ratby Primary School

Our School Council has been collecting opinions from the children about road safety around school. The main issues that our pupils noticed are: • cars not stopping at the zebra crossing; • vehicles travelling too fast past school; • cars parking on double yellow lines or in places that children can’t see past; • drivers using their mobile phones while driving. Then, we ran a competition to help everyone remember our important message by designing a banner. We had lots of entries for the competition and it was a hard job to pick the best ones to put up in the hall. The winners were: We are hoping to choose one of the entries to be made into a real banner for the fence outside school to help everyone to remember how to keep us safe. Please remember these important message next time you are driving past our school, thank you. Ratby School Council Class Representatives

Year 5 – Commando Joe’s Commando Steve from Commando Joe’s has been teaching Year 5 about Space. 1. On our first mission, we made a 2D astronaut suit on the floor 2. On our second mission, we made a rocket, that our team could sit on 3. On our third mission, we created a rocket out of a plastic bottle, each class launched 6 rockets. We used white vinegar, bicarbonate of soda, a cork and a launch pad of jenga blocks. It was very exciting! “Commando Steve is amazing, he's teaching us about space and helping us build character traits. He is helping us to understand the topic and ourselves. He is COMMANDO STEVE!” By Holly, Lily and Isla Pluto 5

As part of their new topic on ‘Street Detectives’, year 2 have enjoyed learning all about the history of Ratby and they recently went on a village walk to spot local landmarks and historical sights in the community. The children were very interested to learn all about the old butcher’s shop and were surprised to learn that the location of the old Co-op used to be a cinema! The topic has focused on learning about the history of the village of Ratby and we have been looking at how it has changed over time. As you can imagine, the children have been very excited looking at maps and old photos of the village to work out what has changed in the local community. Year 2 are very much looking forward to learning more about the ‘Street Detectives’ topic and are excited to describe their route to school, including any local features they spot along the way.

Year 3 – Mighty Metals This term Year 3’s topic Mighty Metals was brimming with scientific investigations about forces, magnets, metals, push and pull action, pulleys and levers. Our young scientists have been conducting many experiments that involve measuring forces and deciding on materials that enable objects to travel faster. The Iron Man, the main character from our novel study, is looking for a friend to keep him company. The children have been asked to design a prototype friend that can stop him from being lonely using various household recycled materials. But who will he choose? This is an opportunity to present their companion by discussing how they made their robotic friend for Iron Man, but also providing us with a list of instructions on how he can be operated. A must if he is going to be a lifelong companion!

Welcome To All Of Our New Foundation Stage Children We Are Absolutely Delighted That They Have All Settled In So Happily! Most of our learning so far has been based around two of our favourite woodland stories, Owl Babies and Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We had to find clues to the Goldilocks story on the playground and we have retold the story with puppets and role play, identifying the main events and talking about the characters. We have been counting bears and problem solving using different sizes of bears, including sharing the food out so that Daddy Bear had more food than Baby Bear. We found a broken chair in our classroom and we all think we know who did that!

Ratby Primary Residential

The children have all shown a tremendous interest in learning new things and we are having a lot of fun together!

Year 6 had a wonderful time at Condover Hall for their residential week in September.

What’s the deal with Army Cadets? Army Cadets is for young people who are up for adventure, enjoy an adrenalin rush, like working with others, want to challenge themselves and, most importantly, like to have fun.

Who can join

?

Army Cadets is a well kept secret – it’s fantastic, but not many people know about it.

Army Cadets is all-inclusive – you just need to be aged 12 -18.

Will I have to join the Army later?

How does it work?

You aren’t expected to join the Army after being an Army Cadet, it’s simply an organisation for young people who want to live an awesome no-filter lifestyle.

Cadets join a group called a detachment. That’s your Army Cadet crew who you get to know well through your adventures. You bond with each other by taking part in activities and spending time at summer camp and on expeditions.

Done any Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards? That’ll give you a flavour of the expedition element of Army Cadets. In fact, the expedition training and DofE are aligned so you can do your DofE through Army Cadets at a fraction of the price you’d pay anywhere else.

How often would I go? Detachments meet one or two evenings a week and do adventurous training and camps on weekends and during school holidays.

What does it cost? Cadets pay a very small

annual subscription for their uniform and access to incredible adventures. Weekends and camps are heavily subsidised; money shouldn’t be a barrier to joining.

Halloween Special! Trick or treaters, bring an adult to the library and we'll give you a skeleton lolly to add to your haul! There'll also be hot chocolate on sale with a selection of delicious muffins, toast, brownies etc. We're a bit famous for our lattes and capuccinos so adults, come in for a restorative after a heavy haunting bout. Look out for further details in the library, our website and on Spotted Ratby Facebook page. Quiz Night is back! With Steve Roche as question master be prepared for fun and fiendish questions. Friday 15th October at 7.30 pm will see our second quizz of the year. It's great fun and the many people who attended last month were so glad to be back. Wriggly Readers started up again last month and is now just as popular as it ever was with parents and carers of pre-schoolers. Songs, rhymes and stories combined with active play make for a really happy and sociable ocassion so do come along and join us. At the moment it is every two weeks on Thursday morning, 10.30 -11 for songs and a story with play and refreshments until 12. The library is closed to other users in order to give a safe and unique experience. Dates for future Wriggly Readers sessions are 14th & 28th October, 11th & 25th November and 9th December. Are you a member of a craft group? Walkers? Book clubbers? Local Interest Group? Need a place to meet? We have free time available in the library on four mornings a week. If you wanted a comfortable space to sit, chat, work, why not call in and we can discuss your needs? One visitor we didn't welcome last month was the fly-tipper who left a 50 gallon drum of used chip oil in our car park, creating spillage and stains. This could have been an environmental blow to the water system, the main road outside as well as parents and visitors trying to park. Our County Library Hub tried to help but we must offer special thanks to Councillor Chris Boothsby who was indefatigable in helping to get it removed. If anyone ever sees something like this happening again, please contact us, the police or Hinckley and Bosworth Council to put a stop to this anti-social behaviour. Volunteers: we need you! Like many community libraries in the county, the prolonged lockdown of the last 18 months has led to a shortage of volunteers. We'd like to thank all previous volunteers who helped create such a good atmosphere in Ratby Library. If you would like to get involved with the local community but don't have much more than two hours a week to spare, why not come and join our community of library volunteers? Full training is offered so do call in and talk to us about joining our team; you really won't regret it. Opening Hours: Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday

10am – 12 & 2pm - 4pm 2pm – 4pm 2pm – 4pm 2pm – 4pm 2pm – 4pm 10am – 12

With apologies to those who look up our hours on Google, please could you use the Ratby Library and Community Group website for your search? We have no control over the mis-leading 'Ratby Library' site as it is not our domain and we're not able to amend it. We also post regularly on Facebook in the Spotted Ratby group so we can keep you updated on events and items of interest.

Hear4U – based in Leicester, Hinckley, Rothwell and soon-to-be Newark – are revolutionizing the way they do business. In the world of finance, long gone are the days when everything was written on sheets of paper, so why should the world of medicine be any different? For hundreds of audiologists up and down the country, the technology may have changed but the way they do business has remained the same for many years. In the pursuit of stability and reliability, audiology has tended to lag behind when it comes to the way they operate, relying on paper notes and outdated systems. A Paperless Future For Hear4U, that is all about to change with the addition of Blueprint Solutions’ celebrated, cutting-edge system. Boasting an entirely paperless format, this pure-digital method features a far more detailed interface which can track entire patient histories as well as their choice of medical solutions across time. Put simply, this means a far more patient-focused approach that perfectly reflects Hear4U’s own ethos. If patients want to receive a new pair of those same hearing aids they had a few years ago; if they need to access medical history for a home visit at the touch of a button and if they want a secure system with an intuitive client interface, this innovative new system has them covered. Indeed, Blueprint Solutions’ remarkable method is truly the next generation of patient/clinic interface. Not only is its extensive database available anywhere, but Hear4U will be implementing an online booking form, an automatic appointment reminder system and full cashless credit card processing so that you need never miss your timeslot again. Patient-Focused Approach In keeping up with Hear4U’s commitment to the very best in aftercare, they have opted to include three additional procedures in making sure that patients always feel that they have the support they need: Automatic reminders for arranged follow-up meetings, a full timeline for your hearing aids so that you know exactly how old they are and even a warrantee reminder for when your coverage is about to expire. On top of all this fantastic functionality, patients can look forward to a fully integrated experience with Noah software, the gold standard for audiometry. This means that you can have a full printout of your latest audiogram whenever you like for maximum peace of mind. Director Tyler Bennett had this to say: “I’m absolutely thrilled about the new system – it’s set to be a real boon, not only for our staff (but) our patients and clients as well. With this addition, we can solidify our position as one of the leading audiologists in Leicestershire”. Osgathorpe Based National Assistance Dog Charity Opens Doors To Helping More Disabled People

Teas, Coffees, Cakes, Teacakes & more! Donations of books would be welcome on Friday 29th (4 - 5pm)

Article by Elly Fiddy

Locally based national assistance dog charity Canine Partners has officially opened its brand new kennel block to its dogs in training, allowing them to train more assistance dogs for disabled people. The charity, which has two national training centres including one near Osgathorpe, Leicestershire, held an opening event on Thursday 23 September, which was attended by His Royal Highness The Duke of Gloucester.

‘Tis almost the Season to be Jolly…

Canine Partners trains amazing assistance dogs to transform the lives of people with disabilities, boosting their confidence and independence. Previously the charity had used temporary accommodation and volunteer homes for the dogs in its advanced training programme at the Midlands Training Centre, which limited the number of dogs that were able to be trained as assistance dogs.

It’s almost time for ‘Kirby Muxloe’s Christmas Lights Switch On.’ So, get your woolly jumpers ready and come and join in the festive fun outside the Village Hall/Library on Friday 26th November from 6:30 – 8:30 pm.

“With significant support from charitable trusts and foundations, corporate supporters, organisations and individuals, we were able to secure enough money to build these fantastic new facilities,” says Cat Harvey, Head of Fundraising.

The winners of the Christmas colouring competition organised by Kirby Muxloe Parish Council will have the honour of switching on the glittering tree lights at 7:15 p.m.

“We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who donated to our ‘Raise the Woof’ appeal and for enabling us to continue transforming lives for years to come.”

DJ Scott Bailye will host the evening of attractions which include Ratby Co-operative Mid-Band, Castle Playgroup, Kirby Muxloe Primary School Choir, Santa Claus, Face Painting, Children’s Funfair Rides, Stalls, BBQ, Refreshments and much more!

The new kennels can house up to 40 dogs at any one time, which means that in future years, the charity will be able to help many more disabled people enjoy greater independence and a better quality of life, by being partnered with our assistance dogs. The dogs are taught a range of everyday tasks including picking up and fetching items, opening doors and helping to undress a person. They can even help to load and unload a washing machine and they can fetch help in an emergency. To find out more about Canine Partners or to make a donation to help transform the lives of disabled people, please visit www.caninepartners.org.uk

26 | www.openboxpromotions.co.uk/news

Any donations received on the evening will be donated to Rainbows, who provide vital care and support to families impacted by life-limiting conditions. Please note that the car park by the Village Hall/Library will close at 3:30 p.m. on Friday 26th November 2021 to enable the festive preparations to get underway.

The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group Article by Judith Upton

The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group generally meets 6 times a year, and membership is open to all. Details of the dates of meetings, together with the topics that will be covered, are shown on the notice board in Kirby Muxloe Library and on our website, which is www.kirbymuxloelocalhistorygroup.org Our main meetings will resume on September 28th with a talk on “The Ivanhoe Line” by Ted Cook, starting at 7:30pm. Covid precautions will apply. For further details, please see our website. Our new “Memories” meetings unfortunately remain suspended, pending our assessment of the effectiveness of our new anti-virus procedures. We have now extended our monthly newsletter to non-members of the History Group, although our last issue will be in September. A FREE copy can be picked up at Kirby Muxloe Library, Station Road, or Clann Gifts on Main Street, or email copies on request from info@ kirbymuxloelocalhistorygroup.org A meeting with Jane Draper A few weeks ago, in response to our article on memories of Leicester Market and its surrounds, I received a call from Jane Draper of Kirby Muxloe. Jane had memories of the shops surrounding the market to add to our excellent memories from Jan Timson. So, never one to miss an opportunity, I arranged to meet Jane at her house in Kirby. We settled down in her cosy sitting room, I switched the recorder on and off we went. Well, memories of the market turned into her childhood memories and it soon became a very interesting conversation. Firstly, the market. Jane has memories of the Mikado coffee house at the side of the market, fairly near to where W.H. Smith is today. Jan had told us of the smell of coffee emanating from the open shop door and she was able to give us a real insight into the shop interior. Jane recalled that once a week, she visited the Mikado with her friend for lunch time coffee. I asked if they had anything to eat, Jane said no, we couldn’t afford to buy anything to eat, we always took sandwiches to work. Jane confirmed the fantastic smell of coffee that wafted into the market place – it was very strong and she was sure there were more than one type of coffee, all displayed in jars behind the counter. She remembers the large brass coffee grinder in the window and says that the inside was pretty basic. She couldn’t remember much about downstairs, as they always clambered up the steep stairs to the first floor. There was no décor, just mismatched tables and chairs. When they arrived on the first floor, they found a table and sat down. Most of the customers were men – the two men who either owned or worked for Clark and Satchel were always there. A waitress soon came to serve them, since there was no carrying a hot cup of coffee upstairs yourself in those days! Stoyles was another shop that she remembers; Jane’s mother used to shop there frequently, always buying the same winged collars for her grandad. He wore them all day, every day and when he removed the collar at around 9 o’clock at night, you could see how the collars had cut into his flesh, he always had a red, rather sore looking mark around his neck. Jane said “Why he wore them all day, every day, I do not know”. Stoyles store also had a fascinating money tube, which was always an interesting thing to watch as the money was sent up to the cashier on another floor and then the tube returned bearing the change. Jane’s grandfather started an undertaking business, which is probably why he dressed as he did. Her father took over the business in later years and at the time, he was possibly the only undertaker who had a fleet of Daimlers, a hearse and a number of coaches. Most of the surrounding village undertakers hired their vehicles from him. Each Sunday, Jane and her two sisters used to go around with their father collecting the rents. My own great uncle, Stephen Preston, was an undertaker in Ratby, so maybe he hired vehicles from Jane’s grandfather. Her father had premises for several vehicles and employed a coffin maker. The funeral premises were on Saffron Lane and they are still there today, although the company was taken over many years ago.

Vestry Street Swimming Baths. Jane also remembers Gee Nephews, which was a fashion store. Her mother particularly liked Morgan Squires on Hotel Street, opposite the top of the market. Once a year, Jane, her twin sister and her other sister were taken into Morgan Squires to buy a new dress each. This was a very important occasion as they only ever had one new dress a year, always purchased at the time of the Sunday School Anniversary. This was the first time the dress was worn; it was always very exciting. At the anniversary, they all sat on wooden planks that had been constructed in a tier so that everyone could be seen. This was a special event and the congregation was very large. Personally, I have memories, when at the age of 6 or 7, watching my mother and grandmother sewing and embroidering a special dress for me to wear at Ratby Chapel Sunday School Anniversary. Just opposite Morgan Squires at the top of the market was a lovely shop named Pearce’s, selling high class jewellery. The shop had two windows and Jane said they often stood and stared at all the amazing jewels, but never went in. Jane also remembers Home and Colonial, which reminds her of large tins of biscuits, from which the customer would purchase ½ lb or 1lb of assorted biscuits. These had to be weighed on the scales and put into brown paper bags. She also has memories of large amounts of sugar in a sack, sitting on the floor, which when ordered, was put into blue paper bags and weighed. One lasting memory is of Vestry Street swimming baths and slipper baths (slipper baths were bath tubs, usually in an enclosed area in the same building as the swimming baths. This is where people who did not have a bath of their own could take a bath for 6 pence a time). Jane says that if your school was the first to arrive, their initial duty was to pick up a fishing net and remove the cockroaches. The same action applied to the slipper baths. Yuk!!! However, after swimming she used to buy a jam cob (no butter) for 1 penny. Jane still remembers them and said “Oooh – a jam cob”! Our conversation continued with Jane adding more interesting memories, which have been transcribed and saved in our History Group’s archive. Thank you, Jane, for a lovely hour listening to your memories.
