Our meetings continue into the autumn. Sunday at 2.30 on September 11th at the Mary Forryan Centre; our ‘Challenge Parkinson’s’ weekly exercises at 3.00 at the St. Francis Centre; dance and singing sessions at Elmesthorpe Village Hall on Friday afternoons; our monthly ‘get togethers’ at Dobbies at Stapleton on September 19th from 2.00 in the Restaurant Conservatory; and our Nordic Walking on the third Thursday of the month at 11.00 from Acorns Café at Burbage Common. But, after that initial part of leaving my troubles on the bank and learning to trust the dog, I soon realised they were so big and strong, they had enough power to take me back to safety.

Pete has been offering the emotional support experience with his Newfoundlands for around seven years, but has been working with the breed for over 26 years. He said: “We work with schools, the emergency services, with people with disabilities and we are now doing more of this work with veterans. It is so rewarding and the results are brilliant. The dogs love it too.
Mark, 50, who lives in Leicester, has therapy for his complex PTSD. He said: “I was discharged from the RAF in 1997 for health reasons. Since leaving I have had 13 surgeries on my knees and shoulders. A few years ago, I had a breakdown. My PTSD came to the forefront of what I had been struggling with for so long. It may sound hard to believe, but I found that when I was struggling, I could sit one of my pet rabbits on my shoulder and I could speak to them without feeling any shame. I also have a dog. Now, if I have a bad day, I know I have to get up for my pets. It gives me the drive to keep on going. I think having that bond with animals is so therapeutic and that is what made this experience so amazing. There is no doubt about it, they were such special dogs.
Rescue Dogs Help Veterans Improve Their Mental Wellbeing Through Therapeutic Open Water Swim Sessions During Summer
One of the veterans who attended the first session in the series, on Wednesday 15 June, was ex-RAF firefighter, Mark Eyres.
The emotional support swimming dogs, Storm, Sonar, Walker, Bob and Ralph, excel in the water due to their muscular build, thick double coat, webbed paws and excellent swimming skills. The dog’s owner and trainer, Hinckley-based EMAS paramedic, Pete Lewin and his team will also be in the water. Earlier this year, the large pups, Pete and his team were crowned winners of The Kennel Club Hero Dog Award competition at Crufts 2022.

He added: “I really want to help other veterans who are going through something similar to me and who need some support for their emotional wellbeing. We hold virtual drop-in sessions on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Being able to talk openly about our shared experiences and having that community and comradeship is so valuable.

After the success of the pilot session, Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust’s charity Raising Health secured £4,880 of funding from the Shire Community Grant, managed by Leicestershire County Council, to hold six more courses for those who have left the armed forces and need mental health support.
“There was an amazing bond between the veterans; we had that friendship as soon as we were in the water. I was able to be honest and say when I felt I was struggling. Everyone was so supportive and helped me when I needed it. That was very special.
Over this summer, a number of ex-service personal took part in a series of unique NHS-supported open water swimming sessions with award winning rescue dogs, to help them with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The four-hour sessions will take place at Stanton Lakes in Stoney Stanton, following a successful pilot held in September 2020. The veterans taking part will don wetsuits and take part in a series of relaxing floating and towing experiences in the water with the specially trained Newfoundland dogs, as part of the mental health support they are receiving from Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust’s Armed Forces service.
“As part of the sessions, the veterans will join me and the dogs in the lake, with buoyancy aides, and we will go through some special holds and tows that will help them to feel emotionally supported, secure, wanted and cared for. This sort of therapy isn’t about curing the PTSD but gives people some respite for a few hours and allows them to take their mind off any negative thoughts. It works so well because you get the cold-water therapy – which helps people to focus on the present and their breathing – as well as the enjoyment of working with the dogs who give off pheromones, which helps people to relax and feel positive. Swimming with the dogs will also give them new memories for life.”
Mark is passionate about helping other veterans. He volunteers his time to help with Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust’s Buddy2Buddy support service for ex-service personnel, which is also organised by Brendan Daly.

I remember the American airmen; they were always in the village, usually in the pub! They were often drunk at night and always fighting, not with the village lads but with each other. They used to give us chewing gum. In my teenage years, I went to the youth club, it was held in the school rooms -we didn’t dance, boys weren’t into dancing. There was a record player and we used to play table tennis. Sometimes we’d walk to the Majestic cinema in Ratby; there were double seats at the back so a couple could sit together. It was so dark in the cinema as there were no small lights at all. Hardy’s on Castle Road used to sell ice cream-it used to be 90% ice. We didn’t have cornets; it was always a “sandwich”. Milk used to come round on a cart and when I was small, I used to go out with a jug, they would scoop the milk out of the big churn with a ladle. I remember Jones ginger beer sold in a stone jar and delivered each week.
Last month, I was invited to interview Bryan Clarke. I knew of Bryan, but had never actually met him. It turned out to be a very enjoyable morning, sitting with Bryan and his lovely dog Benji and listening to his memories. Looking at his many pen and ink pictures was a real treat; he is a very accomplished artist.
Bryan is a very accomplished gentleman; apart from his pen and ink drawings, he has, over the years, made 17 carriage clocks. A display of Bryan’s drawings with be on the History board in the library during September.

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday September 20th when we will be given an interesting talk by David Ray entitled “William Morris and England’s Silk Road”. Our meetings commence at 7:30pm and visitors are always most welcome.
I went to Kirby School on Barwell Road and I remember Mr Jarvis the headmaster, Miss Williams and Miss Hubbard, but I can’t remember anyone else. We used to get the cane if we had been naughty, even for talking in class. I’ve heard of people climbing on the roof to ring the bell but I don’t really remember doing that! In the playground, there was a long brick-built wall which separated the boys from the girls. I went home for my dinner as we lived close to the school. I don’t think the food was very good; they used to cook it in the place on Main Street (now the Scout hut). An old man used to wheel the food down to school on a barrow and one day he dropped it and it went tearing down the hill crashed into a wall and spilt all the dinner; everybody had bread and cheese that day! I recall the evacuees coming into school. I was a form captain when they brought in the evacuees and divided them up into various classes, they
When WWII came along, my father who had trained as an engineer, went to Desford aerodrome where he repaired planes that had crashed; that was a reserved occupation so he didn’t join the forces. With my dad working at Desford, the shop was closed down, partly because we couldn’t get the provisions and also because most people were growing their own vegetables. At that time, we were living at number 30, Main Street which is one of the Victorian cottages set right back from the road next to the shop. The house had a big long garden and we used to sell a lot of the produce we had grown. People used to come for lettuce and all sorts of veg. The soil was black and crumbly, you could grow anything in it! I remember Mrs Wilmer, who lived next door, and although Mrs Wilmer had electricity and gas, we didn’t, I don’t know why. The cottage was a good size with a large black range with lots of ovens. Meat was rationed and so we didn’t get much at all, however, I was friends with Mr Russell the butcher on Main Street and from time to time he would give me a slice of corned beef wrapped in paper.
Bryan’s story- I was born in 1937 and have lived in Kirby Muxloe all my life, as did my father and grandfather before me. My father had a greengrocery shop in Main Street. It was where One Stop is now. We had the right-hand side of the building, on the other side was Tom Poyner, who sold animal feed, coal and coke. Mr Poyner was a merchant for coal and coke and so used to store it in the fields at the back of the shop. My grandfather originally ran the shop; he also had a horse and cart, which he drove around the villages selling his goods and produce. Later, he had a lorry and went around the area, especially Kirby Fields because there were no shops there. Apart from green grocery, they sold bacon, sliced by the bacon slicer when the customer required it and not before. They also sold all sorts of food items; remember, there were no other shops around here at the time. Of course, this was a time before Enterprise House was built when there were just fields and someone’s garden behind a high edge next to Poyner’s and my father’s shop.

The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group generally meets 6 times a year, and membership is open to all.
There are so many memories – playing at the castle after 6o’clock when the keeper went home, sledging on Big Hill, the circus which didn’t seem to have any animals, just one strong man! The Boden ladies who ran the shop at Faith cottage. The draining of the moat in 1941, when all the fish (some very large Carp) were swimming in the stream, which was too shallow and sadly they ended up dying. Going on a boating holiday with Tony Ball and lastly the stock car.

were from London and a rough lot. After school, we usually went down into the fields; we used to climb trees and make dens. At conker time, we used to go up to Gullet Lane and also on Back Lane, trying to find as many conkers as we could. I’m pretty sure we went scrumping, it was just a thing that boys of my age did. We kept hens in the garden; at one time we bought 12 chickens from the market, they were 6d each. Ten of them died, the two that lived ended up being cockerels! At one time, my grandfather and father kept 200 chickens, I think they were in the back field. They sold the eggs in the shop, but that was before my time.
When the bombs dropped on the village in 1940, I was in bed and the ceiling collapsed on top of me-it was only plaster so it wasn’t too bad. My uncle, who lived on the corner of Barwell Road, said that the blast lifted up his roof, twisted it and set it down again in a different place. The lock on our back door was blown off and we never found it! I remember them removing all the railings in front of the houses and taking them for the War Effort, they were replaced by low brick walls. I also have memories of great big hollows on Blood’s Hill where some bombs had been dropped (they would have been incendiary bombs J.U.) The hollows were there until fairly recently but have now been levelled out. I think the Germans were emptying their planes as they passed overhead. Dad used to put big boards over the windows which were made up of small panes of glass. There used to be an air raid shelter in the Royal Oak carpark, built of brick with a concrete roof. It stood close by the oak trees, which are no longer there, but fairly close to the road. We used to play parachutes by jumping off the top-we didn’t use anything for a parachute, just our imagination! I remember another brick shelter outside Goodall’s shop. I don’t think I went in either of them.

Phone lines down in Ratby. We were made aware earlier this week that BT phone lines were down in our village. This has caused huge problems for residents, businesses and HBBC controlled accommodation such as Centurion Court. HBBC have supplied those residents with temporary mobile phones and sim cards. In order that they can contact anybody for help if needed. This was caused by a theft of copper cables and fibre optic cables at the William Davies site which was not the only one. Barlestone and Osbaston also were subject to thefts on the same night. HBBC are working hard and negotiating with BT Openreach to ensure service is restored as soon as possible but with pending strikes by BT Workers soon, this might delay restoration of services.

Grow With Us – Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation’s Thriving Community Allotment Project Marks A Ten-Year Milestone!
Located on Hinckley Road in Leicester Forest East, the new development will sit on the site of the current Kathleen Rutland Home, which currently accommodates 42 older residents and a low vision clinic, operated by the charity Vista. In addition to 30 more spaces at the care home, the new development will replace the old structure, which is considered to be “outdated and of a visually poor design.”
Councillor Nick Chapman, Vice Chair of Blaby District Council’s Planning Committee, said: “We are pleased to have approved this important development. Vista are a charity who make a hugely positive difference to the lives of many people, both in the district and across the county. Their commitment to modernising the old Kathleen Rutland Home with a new, high-quality structure highlights their support in our local communities. The charity is delighted to share details of the ongoing success of the Grow with Us Project, which is celebrating its tenth and most fulfilling year to date. Helen Baxter of the Foundation said, “In 2012 Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation reinstated an old, enclosed vegetable garden at Ulverscroft Grange to link disadvantaged young people with members of the wider community who have an interest in allotment style gardening and a desire to pass on their skills”.
Other facilities on the site will include a new shop, physiotherapy centre and a gym which will benefit both residents and the wider community.

Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation, a registered charity based in Ulverscroft in the heart of the Charnwood Forest in Leicestershire, has been providing support and friendship to older adults and people living with an illness or disability for many years. The Foundation provides supportive services and inspiring wellbeing opportunities for the local community to enjoy in an inclusive and welcoming setting.
In ten years, the project has matured a great deal; vegetables and flowers have blossomed, and skills and confidence have flourished. This wonderful venture has already achieved many of its objectives by increasing knowledge and skills for all involved, increasing wellbeing through social interactions and through the creation of a positive, enjoyable learning environment for the community to enjoy.

A knitting machine is a device used to create knitted fabrics in a semi or fully automated fashion. There are numerous types of knitting machines, ranging from simple spool or board templates with no moving parts to highly complex mechanisms controlled by electronics. Comparison of machine knitting to hand knitting The fabric produced using a knitting machine is of a more even texture than flat knitting, hand-knitted fabric, which is particularly noticeable on large areas of plain stockinet stitch, and can be an advantage. Some stitch patterns (e.g., tuck stitches) are much easier to produce with a knitting machine. Others (e.g. garter stitch) can also be produced with machine knitting, but can take a little longer; however, this is still much faster than hand knitting. The standard gauge 200-needle machine can knit the finest yarns up to a good sport-weight (4ply UK), while the heavier yarns knit better on a mid-gauge or bulky knitting
