BOROUGH COUNCILLOR’S COLUMN by Christine Radford My role as a Borough Councillor can be very varied and interesting, dealing with housing problems, neighbour problems or planning issues. I was pleased to be able to report that I held a public meeting on Friday 17th May when residents living near too the proposed 66 dwellings on land off Iveshead Road had been invited to ask Peter Blitz, a Charnwood Borough Council officer questions about this detailed application. Concerns were raised regarding the proposed layout, positioning of properties, and the access onto Iveshead Road via a mini roundabout and whether or not access on to Brick Kiln Lane was going to be allowed. Concerns regarding how the sewerage and rainwater would be dealt with as there are already problems in the area. The design of some of the properties such as the proposed flats residents did not feel was in keeping with the area. As Ward Councillor I will be taking on board all of their concerns and ask to speak at the planning committee stage when this application is being considered. A suggested date of 18th July has been pencilled in the diary. There is a rumour going around about 200 houses off Butt Hole Lane/Hathern Road in Shepshed, as yet nothing has been submitted to the Council. When something definite has been submitted I shall report back so that residents are made aware of any proposals. I have written to Nicky Morgan MP asking to be included in the meeting she is organising with the Planning Minister Nick Boles so that I can raise concerns/issues we have in Shepshed regarding the amount of houses we are having to have, without due thought to the lack of improved infrastructure. Shepshed cannot take this amount of new housing. I hold a monthly surgery in the Town Council offices with other Conservative Councillors from 10-11 on the last Saturday of the month except December, or I can be contacted any time on 01509 502974 or 07796 544817 or e mail christine_radford@hotmail.com.

Shepshed Ramblers Book on free Shepshed Shepshed Ramblers enjoyed its annual walking weekend, 3–6 May, in Weymouth. The weather was perfect for the walks along Abbottsbury Ridge; Chessil Beach and the cliff tops from Weymouth to Portland Bill Several members of the group rewarded themselves with cream teas with the completion of each walk! The group stayed at a seafront hotel with views across the bay to the Dorset cliffs and enjoyed the added bonus of being able to watch a kite flying competition from the lounge of the hotel.
The next walk, between 5 and 6 miles is to Rearsby, leaving Shepshed Market Place at 09.25 on 9 June and on 14 July, the group is having an away day to Windsor Great Park for a walk of about 6 miles. There are still places available on the coach. If anyone would like more information about the group and the programme for the remainder of the year you can contact either Margaret on 01509 600510 or Bernie on 01509 828328.

Equipment, including helmets and bicycles, will be available to borrow (subject to availability and a refundable deposit). Shepshed Lions have donated £1,000 to 1st Shepshed Guides for camping equipment. Guide Leader Liz Bullock said, 'We are all delighted with the contribution from Shepshed Lions, which we have already used to buy 4 first class tents, as well as other camping equipment. The first use of the new gear will be at Willesley near Ashby at the end of May, and later in the year we will be going to 'Poacher 2013', an international event being held for 6,000 young people at the Lincolnshire County Showground. The new kit means we can sustain and maybe even extend our busy programme of camps.' Lion President Bill Holland said, 'Our funds come from local people in Shepshed through the Santa sleigh collection and so on, and we direct most of what we raise back to local causes, like 1st Shepshed Guides. It's great to be able to help them, and I hope they get many years of good use from the equipment they have bought with our donation.

GPCPG Launches Campaign Programme Garendon Park & Countryside Protection Group (GPCPG) have launched their Campaign to oppose the building of over 3,000 houses on the Garendon Green Wedge and an additional 500 houses west of Shepshed. Charnwood Borough Council’s draft Core Strategy still includes these proposed housing developments despite representations made by GPCPG and Charnwood residents. Though more houses are needed, these should be built east rather than west of Loughborough for a more sustainable future.
We may look cold but it is great fun!
There is to be a 6 weeks Consultation on the Strategy commencing 10th June, but CBC will undertake this mainly on the Internet. Although a number of ‘Exhibitions’ are to be held around Charnwood, there will be little opportunity for Shepshed and Charnwood residents to voice their opinions directly to Borough Councillors. GPCPG are therefore arranging three Public Meetings to keep residents informed of CBC plans and allow their views to be heard. Planned meetings are as follows: • Tuesday 4th June at Hathern Community Centre starting 7.30pm • Friday 7th June at Shepshed Glenmore Centre starting 7.30pm • Friday 14th June at Gorse Covert Community Centre starting 7.30pm It is also hoped to have a mass walk through the Garendon Green Wedge on Sunday 16th June starting at 2.00pm. Further details of this will be published on the GPCPG website and discussed at the Public Meetings. The list of GPCPG members/supporters has now reached over 750 and the number of signatures on hard copy and internet petitions over 3,500. But we still need more help if we are to be successful with our Campaign. For more details please visit our website (www.garendon.org.uk) or email l.needham1@ntlworld.com or roy.kershaw@ntlworld.com
Shepshed Town Bowls Club are holding an Open Day for new bowlers on Sunday 30th June between 10am and 4pm. If you fancy having a go, come along and see us. Coaching will be available and a warm welcome extended to all age groups. Just bring yourselves, wearing flat shoes or trainers. Entrance to the Bowls Club is at the back of Charnwood Hall Nursing Home (opposite Asda) on Charnwood Road, Shepsed.
We look forward to seeing you.
An Update from your MP, Nicky Morgan I should like to congratulate Christine Radford on her re-election as Shepshed’s County Councillor and offer my commiserations to the other unsuccessful candidates. Having worked closely with Christine over the past 4 years I can see just how hard she works for everyone in the town and how much she stands up for Shepshed at County Hall. She and I will continue to work together on all matters which are of concern to Shepshed residents. The two main political events, at least from a Westminster perspective, have been the Queen’s Speech and the publication of a draft EU Referendum Bill. The Queen’s Speech announced the Coalition Government’s legislative programme for 2013 – 2014. Bills announced include an Immigration Bill, a bill to reduce national insurance contributions for businesses and charities by £2000, our Energy Bill, a Deregulation Bill to reduce the burden of unnecessary legislation, a draft Consumer Rights Bill, a Pensions Bill, a Care Bill, an Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Bill and an Offender Rehabilitation Bill. Eleven further Bills were also announced. The
programme announced is all about backing people who work hard and want to get on in life. Some of my MP colleagues wanted to pass an amendment to the Queen’s Speech which regretted that a Bill to allow an in/out referendum had not been included in the list of future Bills. Although this was tempting the fact is that at the moment we have a Coalition Government and, although we have passed one Bill to allow a referendum in the event of a change to the EU Treaties we have already signed up to, our Coalition partners do not support having an in/out referendum now. So, as an alternative, one of our MPs will now propose a Private Members Bill so we can at least have the debates about an in/out referendum now and demonstrate the Conservative Party’s commitment to have such a referendum. However, we need either a majority in the House of Commons now or a majority after the 2015 General Election to be able to deliver that referendum. In the meantime lots of work continues to see how our relationship with the EU could be renegotiated. At a local level I know that feelings about planning matters continue to run high. Although not of direct relevance to Shepshed residents some of you may have seen that the Planning Inspectorate and Secretary of State allowed an appeal to build 300 more houses just outside Barrow upon Soar. I spoke against
this application at the appeal inquiry and find it hard to see how such a development can be considered to be sustainable given the pressure it will put on the village’s roads, GP and school. In July the Planning Minister will be visiting my constituency to meet local residents groups and I will ensure at least one representative from Shepshed is present. In the meantime I would encourage you to take part in Charnwood Council’s latest consultation on its draft core strategy. The sixweek consultation aims to find out what people think about the soundness of the strategy which will guide development in the Borough over the next 15 years. At the same time, a new website has been launched to help explain the Council’s plan and includes an interactive map which allows users to see where growth is planned to take place across the Borough. The site can be found at http://localplan.charnwood.gov.uk. The Core Strategy will also be available to view at the Council Offices, County Hall and all libraries during the consultation period. The consultation will begin on Monday, June 10 until 5pm on Monday, July 22, 2013. For further details please contact localplans@charnwood.gov.uk or by phone 01509 634570. To contact Nicky Morgan please e-mail nicky.morgan.mp@parliament.uk or call 01509 262723.

The Shepshed Show is nearly here. With less than 2 weeks to go plans are in full swing to make this the biggest event in Shepshed for many years. The team have been working tirelessly to bring together 70 stalls, attractions, and a wide variety of activities for everyone. None of this would have been possible without the amazing support from local businesses. ARC Business interiors were the first company to show their support when they offered to become the events main sponsor back in March. Quick to follow were Loughborough Building society and Dilips Multi store. Primo IT, Motorline Direct & E M Transport have also shown their support amongst others keen to show the community they are behind the new event. Vicky Coomber the vice chair of The Shepshed Show committee “we have been delighted with the responses from local businesses their enthusiasm to get involved, offer suggestions and ideas, has been fantastic” The committee were amazed to have secured more than 75 stalls selling, arts, crafts, toys, sweets, cakes, chocolate and fresh meat, eggs and cheese. A spokesperson from the show said “we were keen to not only have a wide selection of stalls, but also to encourage local groups and charities to hold stalls to carry out fund raising and help to increase awareness” This philanthropic approach has seen brownies, guides, scouts, boy’s brigade, primary schools and charities such as Shepshed LOROS and New Dawn all wanting to be involved. The show no longer has to contact organisations to become involved they are contacting the show! We have now closed stall bookings to begin the show layout
and plans. The Show Organisers were keen to work with the local professionals of this type of event. The Shepshed Lions were invited to have an involvement in the show from an early stage. They have opted to provide refreshments from their BBQ and tea tent to raise money for their charity. The Shepshed Show launched its website last month. With over 1000 page hits in the first week, it is proving a valuable asset in raising the shows profile among locals and in attracting both sponsorship and stall holders. The website has links to both Facebook and Twitter, with feeds being viewed across all three Medias. The website allowed stall holders to print off booking forms and sponsors could access information on the different packages we offer. Look out for the timetable of events and layout of the show, which adds to the information about entertainment providers and stall holders as well as the Show Sponsors. Please visit the website at www.shepshedshow.org designed by Charlotte Stone Creative of Hathern. A spokesperson said “Charlotte has managed to capture the spirit of the show, we are very proud of the site she has created for us”. To give readers a taster of some of the attractions planned for the day below is a list of just some of the things that will be happening at The Shepshed Show: A Mini Farm – sponsored by Motorline Direct, 2 bouncy castles (one for younger children), face painting, musical bumps sing a long sessions, The Toy Library’s children’s corner, donkey rides (small charge), children’s vintage
bus rides - sponsored by EM Transport and a children’s entertainer. Competitions on the day will include, Tug O War (download your entrance form from the website), a cake competition, miniature garden competition and a novelty Dog Show provided by Glebe Von Wood. If that isn’t enough there will be tombola stalls, wine or water, guess the name of the stuffed toy and a human slot machine game, to name a few! Rowland’s chemist in Shepshed will be offering free health checks and blood pressure check at the show and Charnwood Bras information on breastfeeding, and many other local groups will also be on hand. All of this is as well as a fully packed programme of entertainment headlined by Savage Skills – The UK’s most established mountain bike stunt team from ITV’s Let’s Get Gold. Sponsored by Primo IT The organisers are looking for volunteers who can give 4 hours on Friday 14th June to help set up the show. If you can help please make contact via the website.

Mix – no matching! We are loving Navy to create bold contrasting themes that are bang on trend this season. Nothing needs to match! so try mixing patterns and motifs together in varying shades for a striking new look. Hall of Fame Cricketer visits Shepshed Charnwood. ‘A right handed bat and slow left arm bowler, on her figures she has a strong claim to be regarded as the best all-rounder that the English women’s game has produced’. (Wikipedia) That is the type of comment used to describe Enid Bakewell from Nottinghamshire. She played 12 Tests and 23 one-day international matches for England, returning a batting average, in Tests, of 59.88, with 4 centuries, and taking 50 wickets at an average of 16.62. To recognise Enid’s achievements, last year she was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame, becoming only the 3rd woman to be recognised thus, at the same time as Brian Lara, the West Indies’ legend. Last week she was the guest of honour at a joint meeting of the Rotary Clubs of Shepshed and Shepshed Charnwood, held at the Best Western Premier Yew Lodge Hotel in Kegworth. She brought along her ‘cap’, presented by the ICC, and gave an amusing account of some of her experiences in the game, particularly in her earlier days when sponsorship and expenses were scarce. She had to sell vegetables from her father’s allotment to buy her kit! Also guests at the meeting were Louise Norris, Head of Kegworth Primary School and Neil Swift from Hathern Cricket Club who were both presented with a cheque for £200 by Trevor Smith, President of Shepshed Charnwood Rotary Club, from the club’s Christmas Santa Float Charity collection. In the picture are, from the left, Rotarian David Hayes, Margaret Thompson, Rotarian Roger Hutchinson, Enid Bakewell, President Trevor Smith, Louise Norris and Neil Swift.

Shepshed and District Camera Club
For the members of Shepshed and District Camera Club the recent Spring Bank Holiday drew to a close the meetings for the 2012/2013 season at Shepshed Council Offices on Tuesday evenings, but not before two important competitions and several “in-house” events had taken place. There will be a few informal meetings during the next few weeks details of which should appear on the Club’s website.
In April the annual 3-way print battle with the clubs at Coalville and Ashby took place at the latter’s meeting venue and this year was judged by the well known Midlands photographer Bob Moore. Each club entered 16 prints and they were all given a mark out of 20, the final result was a tie for first place between Shepshed and Coalville with 254 points each and Ashby just behind on 245 points. The first meeting in May saw the third of the 2013 Competition League rounds judged by David Gibbons, ARPS AFIAP APAGB, this time for Open subject digital images and prints to a theme of Farm Animals. David gave a good summary of his feelings about each entry and made the following awards: Prints - Farm Animals 1st. Sue Hutton (Bertie) - 2nd. Paul Rennocks - 3rd. Sue Hutton Highly Commended: Alan Harris & Gary Rennocks Projected Images - Open Subject 1st. Paul Rennocks (A Frosty Morn) - 2nd. Sue Hutton - 3rd. Gary Rennocks Highly Commended: Phil Tapp & John Loan-Clarke The new season for the Club will commence on Tuesday, 10th. September with the usual opportunity for existing members to catch up with each other after the Summer break and to welcome any prospective members who feel they would like to see what goes on. FILMREVIEW The Hangover Part III - 15
The Hangover Part III reunites the original cast and director for one final episode of disastrous goings-on. Despite everything that happened there last time, Phil (Bradley Cooper), Alan (Zach Galifianakis) and the rest of the gang are back in Las Vegas, determined not to repeat the mistakes of last time. Fat chance. Before long they are embroiled in serious crime, are investing in giraffes and are generally up to their ears in trouble, some of it life-threatening. The Hangover Part III is the final masterpiece in one of the maddest trilogies in film history.
Epic - U Epic is a dizzyingly beautiful 3D animation with an amazing cast from the makers of Ice Age and Rio. Mary Katharine (Amanda Seyfried) is the daughter of a professor studying nature deep in the forest. One day, when he doesn’t come back, she goes in search of him and is caught in a leaf shower that magically changes her. Now she’s smaller than most woodland creatures, she’s recruited by a band of tiny warriors in a battle to save their world from evil forces. Epic is an exciting adventure with a message and cast that also includes Colin Farrell, Christoph Waltz and Chris O’Dowd.

Shepshed Lions Club
A New Venue For Shepshed
Tree planting. Members of Shepshed Lions Club have planted 105 trees in the Oakley Park in the town, but they could not do this on their own. They were ably assisted by members of the 4th Shepshed Scout Group and pupils from the ASD ERP unit at Shepshed High School. This was done in collaboration with the Woodland Trust and was part of Shepshed Lions Club commitment to improving our community environment, and working with the young people in the town. It is hoped that when the trees grow it will be a pleasant area to visit for families. Shepshed Lions Club would like to thank the Shepshed Scouts and the School students for their invaluable help in the planting.
A new venue is opening in Shepshed in the near future. It will take the form of a MEET 'n' EAT café and takeaway. The premises in Hall Croft are at present being refurbished to enable customers to sit and enjoy good food and drink. As well as selling prepared light meals and snacks there will also be a selection of cakes to eat in or take away. Also on hand will be a specialist selection of teas and coffees. The proprietor will be a familiar figure for a lot of Shepshed people having worked in the café at Armstrong Mill on Charnwood Road.
Defibrillator. Shepshed Lions Club are proud to announce that they have now taken delivery of a Defibrillator for their Community Defibrillator First Responder Scheme. The Club are now making arrangements for the training of the volunteers who will undertake the response to emergencies when people suffer from heart attacks, cardiac arrest or other breathing difficulties whilst awaiting for the arrival of an emergency ambulance or paramedic. The Club are still looking for volunteers to assist in this project. It is not necessary to become a member of the club to be a volunteer on the scheme. If you are interested in volunteering please contact Lion Bob Lilley on 01509 508265 for more information. Donation of a Trailer. Shepshed Building Society has very generously donated a double axle box trailer to Shepshed Lions Club. Shepshed Lions Club will use the trailer in their community events in the town. Cheryl Eames of the Shepshed Building Society recently made the handover of the trailer to Lions Bob Lilley and Dave Jackson. This is another example of the generous support the Building Society has given to Shepshed Lions Club in their fund raising efforts. Cheryl Eames said she was sad to see the trailer go but was happy it would be put to good use by the Lions Club. Shepshed Lions Club President Bill Holland said, “This is a very generous gift to our Club. I can assure the Shepshed Building Society that the trailer will be put to good use, to benefit the community in Shepshed.”
The MEET 'n' EAT café is opening on Friday 31st May and will be open Monday to Thursday & Saturday 8am 3.30pm, Friday 7.30am - 3.30pm. Do come along and we will be delighted to see you.

COUNTY COUNCILLOR’S COLUMN by Christine Radford I would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who voted for me in the recent County Council Election and as your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council. I am pleased to say that I will still be sitting on the Fire Authority as a County Councillor and I was privileged to attend the opening of the new Head Quarters and Fire Station premises in Birstall. As County Councillor I have raised concerns with Charnwood regarding the proposed mini roundabout on Iveshead Road with the junction to the proposed new houses on land between Brick Kiln Lane and
12
Iveshead Road. I feel that this will only cause more problems than alleviate them. I have also raised concerns about the ‘so called improvements’ on the bend at the junction of Iveshead Road, Moult Hill and Charley Road. I have been assured that there is still further work to be carried out at this junction. I hold a monthly surgery at the Council Offices in Shepshed between 10-11 am on the last Saturday of the month (except December) You can contact me by e mail on christine_radford@hotmail.com or by telephone on 502974 or 07796 544817

Thringstone’s Community Scarecrow Event Taking Shape Thringstone Methodist Chapel celebrate their 150th anniversary on Saturday 6th July with a full day of activities in the village. Starting at 10am with Andrew Bridgen MP opening the event at Thringstone Methodist Church, The Green, there will be games, stalls, displays, refreshments and slide shows, plus the village's scarecrow event organised by Friends of Thringstone. A spokesperson for the group said 'We have all been very busy trying to deliver straw to people to build their scarecrows and have heard of some dramatic suggestions including one family working on either Richard 3rd on horseback or the full range of The Muppets. For the first time, Grace Dieu Cricket Club (whose 150th anniversary is also this year) are taking part in building a scarecrow which will go on their pitch. They are promising to open their bar on the day and there will also be non-alcoholic refreshments, cakes etc. all day at the Methodist Chapel. We look forward to seeing as many people from the area as possible coming to the village to enjoy the festivities.'
Fund Raising in Oliver’s Memory It is now twenty-five years since Oliver Taylor of Syston passed away aged 14 after fighting a long battle against leukaemia. He would have been 40 on the 30th July this year and during the months leading up to his birthday the Taylor family have been commemorating this milestone by organising different events to raise money for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, something that was important to Oliver, as a tribute to his courage and inspiring example. The family have got off to a good start with lots of fund raising events including table top stalls, afternoon tea events, auctions, e-bay sales, sponsored walks and challenges, and a very successful show, ‘100 Years of Fashion’. Their target is £10,000 and so far they have raised just over £8,000. Their big event this year is in June when Oliver’s cousins Sarah Brown and Laura Spridgens, formerly Sarah and Laura Payne of Shepshed, together with eight other team members, are hoping to complete the Three Peaks Challenge (Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon) in 24 hours – a huge undertaking. You can follow the progress of the walkers on their facebook page ‘taylors troupe’. Laura currently lives in Loughborough and works for Sign Express (derby) Sales and Marketing who have kindly made a sign for their minibus to promote their challenge. The family are hoping to get as much sponsorship and support as possible for the team to help them reach their target. If you would like to sponsor them please donate at www.justgiving.com/teams/taylorstroupe or alternatively you can make a donation by writing a cheque payable to ‘Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research’ and sending it to The Oliver Taylor Tribute Fund, Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, 39-40 Eagle Street, London WC1R 4TH.

is such a great girl, so down to earth and a fantastic musical director I am sorry she is unable to stay with us, but I am also looking forward to working with Tom. The choir members would all like to say a huge thank you to Nicole she will be greatly missed.
Serenade had four applicants for the musical director post and each applicant led the choir and directed them through a piece of music as part of their audition. Last week choir members all had the opportunity to vote for the musical director they wanted. Tom was the lucky applicant. Founder member, Keleigh Atkin said “we were so pleased to have received so much interest in the musical director vacancy, it was great to have a choice of such talented and enthusiastic applicants.
Serenade’s next performance will be at the “Shepshed Show on Saturday 15th June 2013 which is being held at Shepshed High School. The choir will be led by Nicole and they will be singing their new song ‘Sing’ by Gary Barlow and Andrew Lloyd-Webber. Members of the choir have been working very hard to rehearse for this performance (including bank holiday rehearsals), so please come along and support them at the “Shepshed Show.
Local girl Nicole Perkins has been directing the choir since the beginning of this and has been a huge hit with members. Despite members trying to persuade her to stay she has decided to continue with her first passion the Gilbert and Sullivan Society. One member said “she

MILLS ON AIR The Loughborough & Distict Amateur Radio Club members activated a special event station, for 'Mills on Air' during the weekend of 11th and 12th May, at the Shepshed Watermill. This is an annual event which the club has taken part in for a number of years at the Shepshed Watermill. There were large number of other mill special event stations activated for national mills weekend, around the UK plus some in Europe. Over the weekend we made contact with at least 24 other mills, along with numerous other amateur radio stations. This year operating conditions for the shortwave band that we were operating on were very favourable, which meant we had lots of stations trying to make contact with us. The club was using a special callsign for the event of GB2WMS, which was just for that weekend. Along with the operating amateur radio we had a display of WWII radio equipment, which included a SOE suitcase spy radio transmitter.

Use The Summer For a Warmer Winter, Says Nicky Morgan
Don Dolby, Press Officer Shepshed Branch Labour Party 07803 413343
Residents could be eligible for free insulation in their homes, which if installed now would be in place ready for the colder weather. With next winter possibly only five months away Nicky is urging residents to take these steps: 1. Call the Home Heat Helpline - find out what help constituents might be eligible for and how to save money on their energy bills. The number is 0800 33 66 99. 2. Apply for a Warm Home Discount – all the major energy suppliers give £135 off to customers who are struggling with their bills and are over 70, living with long-term disabilities or bringing up young children at home. 3. Get a free home energy check - Every supplier will be able to offer help and advice on what constituents can do today to save next winter – and most will do it for free. 4. Fix the leaks - summer is the perfect time to install insulation to ensure houses are warm through the winter. Companies offer to do this work for free or at heavily subsidised rates for some customers
Back row: Caitlin Goulden, Mandy Foulds, Tim Revill, Sally Sarson, Philippa Somerset.
5. Spring clean boilers - while it’s warm and boilers take a welcome break; this is a perfect time to make sure they are as efficient as they can be. Nicky said: “At long last the weather has changed and we are finally seeing some sun. We can take advantage of this to prepare for those colder months.
Front row: Michael Smith, Harriet Somerset, Simon Austen. Not in photo: Edward Small, Craig Foulds and Ben Rowell.
“By taking these steps, hopefully residents can save some money in the long term.”
