For example, local guides and scout groups received £2000 for help with new tent and equipment costs and a local family were given £2000 to help cover the cost of a specialist car seat for their disabled child, enabling them to remain independent.
Bob spent over 30 years as a police officer for Leicestershire and told Miriam that he feels police can’t do their role effectively without the support of the local community. Therefore upon retirement he decided he wanted to give something back to the community.
The Lions meet at Livio’s in Shepshed on the first Monday of every month and not only work locally but are involved with joint projects linking them to the Lions group in Sarcelles – Domont in France. The Lions are an international charity but the majority of the money raised by Shepshed Lions is spent locally, from environmental projects such as tree planting with local young people to giving out small grants to families who really need a helping hand.
inner of this year’s Pride of Loughborough Citizen of the Year award went to local Shepshed resident Bob Lilley. The Community Eye magazine were lucky enough to share a table with Bob and his lovely wife Susan at the awards ceremony and were taken back by the huge amount of charity work he has done for the town.
Bob joined the Lions 13 years ago when it had only eight members, over the years he has been instrumental in raising the profile of the Lions within Shepshed and also of instigating new fundraising activities such as the Santa Sleigh, where he begged resources from locals to build a beautiful sleigh. Last year the Santa Sleigh raised over £3500! One of their other annual events, The Carnival raised over £6000 this year! Bob has been the club president 3 times and the Zone Chairman 3 times which saw him supporting 6 other clubs in their area. The Shepshed Lions now has 26 members. 100% of money raised by the Lions goes to the people who need it most.
4
Bob’s passion and one of the reasons he won Citizen of the Year, is his involvement in the setting up of the Shepshed Community First Responders Group. Run in partnership with East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) the First Responders Scheme sees individuals across the East Midlands, giving up some of their free time to be trained up in Basic Life Support and the use of de-fibrillation machines. Bob has managed to recruit 14 individuals of which only half are Lions, who may one day be saving your life. Despatched by EMAS they aim to arrive at an emergency before the ambulance and as every minute without de-fibrillation a person’s chances of survival decrease by 10% they will be an instrumental part of the emergency services in Shepshed. No previous healthcare experience is necessary as full training is given. If you think you may be able to join this very special team of individuals please contact Bob on 01509 508265. He is also looking for sponsors as each set of disposable defibrillator pads costs £75 + VAT. If you could contribute to this cost please contact Bob on 01509 508265 as without this cost being met it puts huge strain on this vital community service. Bob is very humble about his award and it is clear that he doesn’t work alone and winning this award would not have been possible without the support of fellow Lions, friends and family, including his wonderful wife Susan who is rightly very proud of his achievement. Bob would like to urge anyone who isn’t already involved in local volunteering to give it a go, giving you the opportunity to make new friends and learn new skills and well as reaping huge personal satisfaction from the changes you can make to the lives of others.

It was a privilege to join many residents and the Chairman and members of the Town Council for Shepshed’s moving Remembrance Sunday service. As always the parade through Shepshed provides an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifice that those in our armed forces have made over the years – and continue to make – in order to keep our country safe. They truly will not be forgotten.
Inevitably the stories about how the Parliament cellars are still searched the night before the State Opening of Parliament just in case someone is storing gunpowder there again and how the Palace of Westminster burned down in 1834 caught the attention of everyone! But it is important that we all understand how our democracy works and how highly we should value it, particularly when we look around the world and see that in many other countries their democracy is limited or only just beginning.
November also saw Parliament Week 2013 taking place. Backed by some fantastic online resources www.parliamentweek.org for schools and others this is Parliament’s opportunity to explain how Westminster works. I was delighted to talk about Parliament at the school assembly at Newcroft Primary School. I was very impressed by how many of the pupils knew the name of Big Ben and also all about the
I am very aware that planning and Charnwood Council’s proposed Core Strategy continues to cause great concern amongst Shepshed residents. I have raised these concerns at the highest
levels of Government, including with the Prime Minister. I shall continue to do so. I am also aware of the interest in and questions about services at Loughborough Hospital. I am working with the local GP’s Commissioning Group on a review of the services currently provided at our much loved and well-used hospital. I want to see more services provided there which would tie in with the desire in the NHS to provide more services closer to the community. I am sure that 2014 will continue to see me dealing with many cases and questions from Shepshed residents. I welcome your thoughts and correspondence. And don’t forget I send out a monthly e-newsletter which you can subscribe to via www.nickymorgan.com. However, in the meantime, I wish you and your family and loved ones a peaceful Christmas and successful 2014.

PLANNING APPLICATION
SHEPSHED WEST BY-ELECTION
A planning application has just been deposited at Leicestershire County Council for a waste transfer and recycling facility on Ingleberry Road in Shepshed.
I would like to thank all who voted for me at the Shepshed West By-Election on the 28th October 2013. My thanks also go to the many people who helped with the delivery of election literature, the members of the Loughborough Conservative Party for their help and support, also the Nottingham Road Constituency Office and the Central Conservative Office in Birmingham. Special thanks go to the 10 Shepshed residents who nominated me as their candidate, to Paula Freckelton for her help with food on polling day, to Christine Radford, Pauline Ranson and Nicky Morgan for their support and encouragement. Unfortunately the results were against the Conservatives, but I hope to be able to stand at the 2015 elections, both for the Shepshed Town Council and Charnwood Borough. Yours faithfully - Joan Tassell (Mrs)
You can view this application on www.leics.gov.uk/planning_search. htm and put in planning application number 2013.CM/0347/LCC. For further information contact 0116 3057325. REPORT FROM OUR EAST MIDLAND MEP MR BILL NEWTON-DUNN A recent report by Britain’s biggest business organisation, the CBI, found that every year each person in the UK benefits to the tune of £1225 from EU membership, compared to an annual contribution to the EU budget of just £116. That is undeniably a good deal. Meanwhile, a recent poll has found that 6% of businesses in the UK say they would close if we left the EU. That could mean up to 4286 closing in the East Midlands and 114,200 jobs being lost. Put simply, it’s in Europe, in work. Pulling out of the EU would risk throwing our recovery away and putting thousands of jobs at risk. Liberal Democrats, as the party of In, are focused on helping businesses create more jobs in the UK by reforming the EU from within. We’ve already helped deliver one million new jobs since 2010, now we want to deliver one million more. Bill Newton-Dunn, East Midlands - Liberal Democrat MEP

Top Tips To Do For The Festive Season • Leave your heating on for at least an hour a day while you are away from home. • In severe weather, or if severe weather is forecast, you should leave your heating on day and night at your usual temperature setting. • Check that loft insulation is laid over, and under pipes in the loft. • Make sure that you know where your stop tap is, and that it works so that you can turn off the water supply if needed. • Consider asking a friend or relative to visit your home every day while you are away. This will mean that, if you do suffer a burst pipe, it will be detected as soon as possible. Make sure that they know where the stop tap is located. • If high winds are forecast, make sure objects such as garden furniture or ladders are fully secured. • Set your heating to come on just before you get up and switch off after you’ve gone to bed. If it’s very cold, set your heating to come on earlier and turn off later rather than turning the thermostat up. • If you can’t heat all the rooms you use, heat the living room throughout the day and your bedroom just before you go to bed. Remember to close curtains and shut doors to keep heat in the rooms you use most. • Fit draught proofing to seal any gaps around windows and doors. • Check your guttering is clear from leaves.
• Make sure that your loft has at least 10-11 inches (270 mm) of insulation. Any home with 4 inches (100 mm) or less should have it topped up. • If you have wall cavities, make sure that they are insulated too. • Insulate your hot water cylinder and pipes. • Draw your curtains at dusk to help keep the heat generated inside your rooms. • Make sure that your radiators are not obstructed by curtains or furniture. • Get your home ready for winter. Get heating and cooking appliances checked, flues and chimneys swept ensuring ventilation points are not blocked. If you use heating oil, LPG or wood products as the main heating source, make sure that you have a sufficient supply to avoid running out. Fit an audible carbon monoxide alarm which is EN50291 compliant, but fitting an alarm should not replace regular maintenance of appliances. • Good hand hygiene can help prevent the spread of norovirus. • Learn a few simple first aid steps; such as how to deal with strains and sprains or broken bones, as trips and falls can increase in icy weather. There are a number of accredited first aid providers and useful education resources available. • Check the forecast and ensure you have enough food and medicines. • Check on elderly neighbours, Clean carpets, Clean ovens & Don’t leave shopping till the last minute!

Turkey Timings Place in a pre-heated hot oven, gas mark 7, 425°F (220°C), – this initial blast is so that the heat gets right into the turkey and the stuffing very quickly. Then reduce the oven temperature to gas mark 3, 325°F (170°C). 8-10 lb (3.5-4.5 kg) – 30 minutes at the high temperature, then 2½-3 hours at the lower temperature, then a final 30 minutes (uncovered) at gas mark 6, 400°F (200°C). 15-20 lb (6.75-9 kg) – 45 minutes at the high temperature, then 4-5 hours at the lower temperature, then a final 30 minutes (uncovered) at gas mark 6, 400°F (200°C). Please bear in mind that ovens, and turkeys themselves, vary and the only sure way of knowing if a bird is ready is by using the tests: After the final 30 minutes, remove the turkey from the oven. Pierce the thickest part of the leg with a skewer then press the skewer against the leg to see if the juices run clear without any trace of pink – if the juices are clear, the turkey is cooked. You can also give the legs a little tweak – if they feel like they’ve got some ‘give’ in them, then the turkey is done. Cover it loosely with foil and allow it to rest for about 45 minutes before serving – it will be fine at kitchen temperature. As soon as your leftover turkey is cool put in in an air tight box in the fridge.

CHRISTINE RADFORD | BOROUGH COUNCILLOR’S COLUMN TEL: 01509 502974 - MOB: 07796 544817 - EMAIL: christine_radford@hotmail.com My role as a Borough Councillor can be very varied and interesting, dealing with housing problems, neighbour problems or planning issues. I have struggled recently to keep up with the number of planning applications coming through for new housing on land at the edge of Shepshed. Unfortunately, all are in what I would consider ‘green areas’. I shall continue to oppose these applications and listen to residents’ concerns regarding flooding and infrastructure pressures.
Housing repairs or lack of repairs have been high on my agenda recently. Especially following the refurbishment work carried out to many Council owned properties in the town. In a small number of cases the work has not been finished off properly by contractors but has already been signed off by Charnwood. Tenants and the owners of adjoining privately owned properties affected are absolutely right to raise these issues while the contractors are still in the locality. I took these concerns to a panel at Charnwood and hope that this will be taken on board before further contracts are awarded.
I would like to wish everybody a happy Christmas and prosperous New Year and look forward to helping and support you over the next twelve months. I continue to hold a monthly surgery in the Town Council offices with other Conservative Councillors from 10-11am on the last Saturday of every month except December. Or I can be contacted at any time on 01509 502974 or 07796 544817 or e mail christine_radford@hotmail.com.

CHRISTINE RADFORD | COUNTY COUNCILLOR’S COLUMN TEL: 01509 502974 - MOB: 07796 544817 - EMAIL: christine_radford@hotmail.com As your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal, with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council. (LCC). Leicestershire County Council recently conducted a survey asking residents where they should make over £100m cuts to services which they provide. Despite the survey being online, 63 per cent of the responses came from a hard copy sent out with the Leicestershire Matters magazine. Street lighting was the area in which residents were prepared to see the greatest cuts; a close second was grass cutting. At the other extreme, gritting was an area in which residents did not want to see any cuts. A total of 69 per cent said they would be prepared to pay a 1.5 per cent increase in council tax. At the last meeting of the Area Forum held on 3rd October concerns were raised by those who attended regarding the plans to close the front desk at Loughborough Police station and move it to the nearby Charnwood Borough Council offices. As chairman of the Area Forum I have written to Simon Cole, Chief Constable and copied in Sir Clive Loader, Police and Crime Commissioner for Leicestershire expressing those concerns, mainly the reduced opening hours, but also the fact that the degree of privacy will not so great. The lack of an office for Neighbourhood Watch in the proposed new Police station being considered is a major omission.
I have also written to Nicky Morgan MP regarding the declining services at Loughborough Hospital, the closure of the physiotherapy unit, being the latest example. Local users of these facilities will inevitably face increased travel costs to make use of the alternative facilities at Leicester. Loughborough Hospital covers the next biggest conurbation after Leicester City. I also raised concerns about the long term future of Loughborough Hospital since it is not being used to its full capacity.
The Chairman of Leicestershire County Council, Rosita Page, officially opened the newly refurbished Library in Hall Croft on November 15th. The Library has Adult learning classes, a room which houses Computers for public use and another room for hire. This will have secured the future of this facility for Shepshed and its residents. Invited guests were Joan Tassell and Diane Horne, Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Town Council, Sandra Forest, Mayor of Charnwood and myself as County Councillor for Shepshed. Children from St Botolphs School sang for us and Rosita Page cut the cake. I sit on the Thomas Harley Charity and the Charity recently gave money to Shepshed High School to enable them to invite a group of actors
(Young Shakespeare) to perform Macbeth, I was invited to go along to view the performance and found it very interesting and entertaining.
I recently had a meeting with the Director for Children and Young people and raised my concerns and the concerns of the Town Council regarding the fact that the County Council is not seeking funding towards new school provision even though planning applications for now well over 1,000 homes around Shepshed have been lodged with Charnwood. I am of the opinion if land is not allocated for a primary school at this early stage then no land will become available at a later date. This does not mean I am in favour of extra housing but this issue does need addressing at this early stage. I would like to wish everybody a Happy Christmas and Prosperous New Year. I hold a monthly surgery at the Council Offices in Shepshed between 10-11am on the last Saturday of every month (except December). Or I can be contacted at any reasonable time on 01509 502974 or 07796 544817 or e mail christine_radford@hotmail.com.

ENVIRO-CRIME INVESTIGATORS PROBE COLD CASES ENVIRO-crime fighters have released new figures which reveal a summer surge in the number of fridges dumped in Charnwood. From July to September 2013, Charnwood Borough Council received 36 reports of fly-tipped fridges - compared to just two over the same period in 2012. The statistics were released as part of the Council’s Don’t Muck Around campaign to tackle environmental crime.
ur Party Councillor Jane Hunt, Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet
member for Regulatory Services, said: “These figures show there are people who have no regard for our beautiful Borough. Our award-winning environmental campaign, Don’t Muck Around, is currently focussing on fly-tipping and educating residents about disposing of waste properly.

SHEPSHED TAEKWONDO NEW INSTRUCTOR QUALIFICATION
ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR FOR SHEPSHED WI Shepshed WI met for their annual meeting recently when Glenis Brookes was elected President for 2014. Millie Johnson, retiring President, was thanked for her commitment during the past year which had seen an increase in membership. An easy walking group had been formed with short walks followed by afternoon tea at a local cafe, and several theatre trips were enjoyed by members. Secretary, Linda Gomez, gave her report saying that there had been a good range of speakers and subjects during the year and these included ‘Medical Detection Dogs’, Quilts for Injured Servicemen, Fire Safety, Shoes, Behind The Scenes at the Chelsea Flower Show and Hannah’s Chocolate Shop. There had also been an increase in fund raising during 2013 with a cake stall in the market and on a really hot day a ‘chocolate’ tombola and cake stall at the Lions Carnival which proved very popular in spite of melting chocolate. Another cake stall was also held in November and craft group members decorated a tree at the Christmas Tree Festival held at St Botolphs Church.
Congratulations to Stephen Hopewell 2nd Dan of Shepshed Taekwondo on achieving Instructor status. Steve shown here receiving his Instructor’s Certificate in Derby from Mr Garry Bradford 5th Dan, flanked by fellow instructors Jamie Cameron 2nd Dan and Pat Shawcroft 4th Dan. SERENADE SHEPSHED WOMEN’S COMMUNITY CHOIR Following the success of their concert with the Loughborough Concert Band in October, the ladies of ‘Serenade’, Shepshed Women’s Community Choir, will be performing at their own concert on Monday 9thDecember. This time the choir will be joined by children from St Botolph’s Primary School for a few numbers. The ladies will be singing a mix of both modern and traditional Christmas music, along with a song that was written specially for them by a local resident, Elaine Stevenson, audience participation is very much encouraged! In addition to this, their very own Musical Director, Tom Stanyard, will be in the hot seat performing a solo rendition of a well known Christmas Carol. The concert is being held at St Botolph’s Church at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced at £3 per Adult (under 18’s free) and available by ringing 07772132778 or by emailing serenadeshepshed@ rocketmail.com. Refreshments will be provided and a selection of homemade cakes will be available to purchase on the night. All proceeds will go to Serenade’schosen charities -Derbys., Leics.& Rutland Air Ambulance and Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research. The concert is only part of their full Christmas programme. The ladies will also be singing at the Holy Cross Christmas Fayre, Whitwick on the 23rd November, The Crown public house Shepshed on Saturday 7thDecember, at local Nursing Homes on Sunday 8thDecember and at the ‘Smart and Sparkle’ Community Christmas Party on Saturday 14th December. Please do go along to as many events as you can and support the ladies, not only will the events be very enjoyable, but they will also be raising money for two very worthwhile causes. The Choir, of around 90 Ladies, meet during school term time on Monday evenings at Shepshed High School at 7.30pm. For any women with connections to Shepshed, who are interested in joining the choir, please ring Keleigh Atkin on 07775 558219 or email Serenade at serenadeshepshed@ rocketmail.com. More information about the choir can be found on their website www.serenadeshepshed.co.uk
The new year will begin on Thursday 2nd January with a beetle drive and as usual new members are always welcome. Meetings are held at 7.30 pm on the first Thursday of the month at Christchurch Methodist Church, Field Street, Shepshed. For more information contact Glenis Brookes on 01509 503677.
ST BOTOLPH’S PARISH CHURCH NEEDS YOUR HELP TO KEEP THE ORGAN PLAYING AND THE BELLS RINGING. CAN YOU HELP US? St Botolph’s is a re-ordered 12th century church in the centre of the town. As well as services held on Sundays and Wednesdays, the Church is open on Tuesday and Saturday mornings 9.30am 12.30pm for refreshments, a look around, prayer or a chat. We are very fortunate at St. Botolph’s to have a fine and historic church organ, and a first class peal of eight bells. These are the two items that most visitors will notice when they attend the church for Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals. Indeed Shepshed residents will undoubtedly hear the bells being rung on Sundays, practice nights and many other occasions. We need to carry out some much needed refurbishment to both the organ and the bells. To cover the joint cost of both pieces of work we need to raise an amount in the region of £23,000 + vat. We have launched an appeal for funding for this work and members of the church congregation have organised various fund-raising activities. We have also made several applications for grants to help. We are appealing for donations from local residents and businesses that may be able to help. Please have a look at the Church web site which has further details of the appeal together with interesting historic information about the bells and the organ and more detail of the works required. You can donate via our Church web site: www.shepshedandoaks.co.uk where there is a link to the online facility - please follow the instructions on the web site. If you prefer, send your donation in an envelope marked “Organ and Bells Appeal” to the Parish Office, Church Gate, Shepshed, LE12 9RJ. Cheques should be made payable to The PCC of Shepshed.

SHEPSHED RAMBLERS Shepshed Ramblers recently held its AGM, when not only was business of the Ramblers discussed but a social evening followed. A light supper with delicious puddings was rounded off with a Beetle Drive. So a good time was had by all. The AGM reviewed the walking programme for 2013 and agreed it had been an interesting and varied year. At the meeting the Committee recommended for 2014, walking on the third Sunday in the month rather than the second Sunday, and this was agreed. Suggestions for the twelve walks for 2014 were submitted and the following programme has been devised. (Attached). The AGM also considered and agreed to continue with its May weekend of walking and has chosen to visit Tenby for 2014. The AGM decided to move its ‘day trip’ from July to September and in 2014, the walk will be in Derbyshire. Shepshed Ramblers has arranged a Christmas lunch at Barrow after walking the Fossil Trail on 8 December and the final walk of 2013 is Kasing out Keyam. A five mile walk meeting either at Shepshed Market Place for 09.30 or Keyham Village Hall for 10.00 am. If anyone is requires further information about the Shepshed Ramblers and their walks, please contact either Margaret on 01509 600510 or Bernie on 01509 828328. Go on make it your New Year’s Resolution to make new friends whilst getting fit!

DO YOU HAVE A VISION FOR SHEPSHED TOWN CENTRE IN 2035? COME AND SHARE IT Shepshed town centre needs the help of local residents and businesses to support its regeneration. People who may be prepared to lend their time, skills or enthusiasm to the project are encouraged to attend the Launch Event in January 2014. Using the Shepshed Masterplan, which has been approved by Charnwood Borough Council to help guide its planning policy in Shepshed, improvements are envisaged for the Market Place, Bull Ring and Hallcroft. The package of proposed major physical improvements is supported by a menu of potential actions arranged under six key objectives: • HERITAGE. To promote Shepshed as a historic market town whose heritage and location will attract visitors and drive prosperity. • RETAIL OFFER. To encourage town centre activity and prosperity based on a new / improved market and thriving independent shops. • LEISURE. To provide better leisure facilities across the town to serve residents of Shepshed and to attract visitors to the town centre from outlying employment areas and surrounding settlements. • VISUAL IMPROVEMENTS. To improve the appearance of the town centre and enhance the street scene making it an attractive place to visit, shop and spend more leisure time. • GETTING AROUND SAFELY AND EASILY. To improve public transport, parking, roads and paths to make the town centre an easier and safer place to access and visit. • BUSINESS. To attract new businesses to Shepshed and to help retailers and local businesses to work together with appropriate support, a common purpose and mutual commitment to invest in the town centre. Everyone in who lives or works in Shepshed is welcome to attend this free Event. We need your input to move this outline forward in ways that are practical and can make use of local people and their knowledge and passion for the future Shepshed. The Town Team Launch Event will be held at Shepshed High School Monday 20th January 2014 6.00 pm – 8.30 pm (Buffet available from 6:00 pm) A copy of the plan can be viewed on the Borough Council’s web site at: www.charnwood.gov.uk/pages/shepsheddraftmasterplan

HIGHLIGHT ON CRUCIAL NEED FOR EYE TESTS Ryatt Optometry is taking part in a national campaign to highlight the dangers and consequences of driving with poor eyesight. An autumn and winter campaign called ‘Think About Your Eyes’, encourages drivers to consider their own vision by getting their eyes tested every two years, to make sure their vision meets the legal standard for driving. Ryatt Optometry has joined independent opticians all over the country to participate in the “Think About Your Eyes” campaign. Sarabdip Ryatt said he wanted to highlight the importance, as the nights are drawing in and we are faced with different driving conditions including blinding glare from oncoming traffic.
