One easy way of helping us is to sponsor Andy, our delivery man to dye his hair yellow! He will deliver our Coalville Magazines with bright yellow hair on Friday 14th February! If we get enough donations all the Open Box staff will dye their hair yellow too! And believe me for some of us that deal took some convincing! On the 31st March all our fundraising efforts will be totalled up and sent to DLR Air ambulance and hopefully Open Box will have raised more than the other companies taking part in the fundraising challenge set by the Air Ambulance!

I hope you can join us and wear something yellow, or donate any amount to help us raise as much as possible. SHEPSHED AND DISTRICT CAMERA CLUB
For the first time for a very long time a member of Shepshed and District Camera Club took all three winning places in one of the Club’s competition classes. In the recent 2014 Competition League Round 1 Sue Hutton, who has recently been successful in gaining her Licentiateship of the Royal Photographic Society, took first place with her photograph called “Ready To Roll” and followed that up with “Grebe At Sunset” and “Winter Blues” in second and third places in the Open subject class for prints. Highly Commended’s in this class also went to Phil Tapp and Chris Coxon. The Judge for the evening was Keith Long, who also had the job of judging the Themed class for digital images, “Flight”, and in this class he selected “Incoming” by Garry Rennocks as the winner followed by Brian Negus in second place, Phil Tapp in third place and Highly Commended’s to Alan Harris and Brian Negus. The Club continues to meet on most Tuesday evenings until the summer at Shepshed Council Offices in Charnwood Road with a full programme of lectures, practical evenings and competitions scheduled until then, further details are available on the website at www. shepshedcameraclub.co.uk or on 07740 118338.
SHEPSHED INNER WHEEL CLUB
Inner Wheel Club of Shepshed raise funds for Homestart Members of the Inner Wheel Club of Shepshed and their partners held a very successful Soup and Pudding lunch in January. The event raised £150 which will go towards President Pauline’s chosen charity for this year which is Homestart. Homestart helps families with young children. They support parents as they learn to cope, improve their confidence and build better lives for their children. Inner Wheel is celebrating its 90th birthday this year and a celebratory cake was enjoyed by all members present.
SHEPSHED ROTARY CLUB
SHEPSHED LIONS CLUB COMMUNITY FIRST RESPONDERS The team have been busy responding to calls from East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) in Shepshed, Loughborough and the surrounding villages. In excess of 20calls have been responded to in January alone. All the team members are volunteers and give up their time to support our community. There are quite a few times that the team are on call but do not (fortunately for the community) get called out. EMAS contacted the coordinator of the group, Lion Bob Lilley on Thursday 23rd January to announce that the Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders will be issued with a car for the response to incidents in March or April this year. The vehicle will be marked in EMAS livery and funded by EMAS. (When the vehicle arrives a further release will be made).
CHRISTMAS DINNER
This is a simple enough statement for most of us, but a significant step forward in creative problem solving for autistic students. Shepshed Charnwood Rotary is privileged to have been part of the development of a bare field site into an "outside classroom" for the local Shepshed High School. The site provides young autistic students with space, whatever the weather, to design and build their own bird houses, nature boxes and insect habitats and to monitor wildlife cameras. This enables them to develop leisure and vocational skills whilst working and playing together. It also allows them to become part of a community and binds them together whilst discussing numerous projects. Having this facility available gives the pupils some relief from the pressures of the school day and increases their all important self-esteem. Combining money from the National lottery with the skilled and willing hands of the Rotary Club ensured that the dream of Nick Ratcliffe (forest school provision) came to fruition. In his words, to have a classroom in the forest is "priceless."Additional funding is being applied for, and the Rotary Club looks forward to further involvement in what promises to be a unique adventure.
On Saturday 11th January 2014 members of Shepshed Lions Club members enjoyed a Christmas Dinner at the Shepshed Town Council Offices. The menu was not the traditional Christmas fayre, but an international menu, prepared and cooked by two club members. The meal is traditionally taken in January as, due to the commitments of the Santa Sleigh and other activities there is no time to take it before the big day. A good time was had by all.
PREPARATIONS FOR THE 5TH ANNUAL CHARITY CARNIVAL Preparations are under way for the 5th Annual Shepshed Lions Club Charity Carnival to be held in Glenmore Park, Shepshed on Bank Holiday Monday 25th August 2014. Put the date in your diary now. Arena acts have already been booked and a number of stallholders and attractions have already reserved places at the event. If you are interested in having a stall please contact Lion Susan Lilley on 07429 535499. This years event promises to be bigger and better than last year. Please remember that all proceeds earned by the Shepshed Lions Club go to charitable good causes. Many groups and individuals have benefited from grants made from the funds raised in all of the club’s fundraising activities.

NICKY MORGAN | AN UPDATE FROM YOUR LOCAL MP Tel: 01509 262723 - Email: nicky.morgan.mp@parliament.uk I have had lots of casework and e-mails to keep me busy for the last few weeks. Please keep your e-mails coming. I do read them and I really do appreciate hearing from you – even if you just want to tell me what we could be doing differently! I spent a great day rehearsing and then singing with the Shepshed Singers recently as they held a “Come and Sing” day for members and enthusiastic extras! We sang the Britten Requiem which is a fabulous piece of music. It was a pretty full day and we all had to concentrate but it was worth it when we even had an audience for our final performance. Thank you to everyone at the Shepshed Singers for making me so welcome.
I was very sorry to read in the local press about the further dog on dog attacks suffered by another Shepshed family, the Gouldens. It was a pleasure to meet them all, and their puppy Pepper, when they joined another constituent, Jill Mayes, to support her call for stiffer penalties for such attacks. Jill launched her petition last summer and I have been pleased to support her call for more action. Jill had lots of support when she had a stall at the Pets at Home store in Loughborough. Her petition can be found at www. epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/52161 We are hoping to find a space for Jill to set up a stall in Shepshed at some point soon to gather further support. Sadly this seems to be a widespread problem. I know the vast majority of dog owners take
full responsibility for their pet and it is a great shame that a small minority can ruin everyone else’s peace of mind. I know that the recent rainfall has meant further paths and land being flooded in and around Shepshed. I have written to the DEFRA Minister about the maintenance of flood relief systems put into new developments, which has been raised with me by the Town Council. I shall share his response to me with the Council once I have it. Finally, please don’t forget that plans for the 2014 Shepshed Show kick off with a launch event on Monday 17 February at Shepshed High School from 7pm. I look forward to seeing you there.

SCOUT BURNS’ NIGHT RAISED FUNDS FOR JAPAN AND TOILET TWINNING Burns’ night was celebrated once again by 3 local Scout groups - Belton and Hathern, 4th Shepshed, and Blackbrook Explorers, which is now a popular annual events in the local Scout calendar. It was also the start of a series of fund raising events being organised to raise money for 3 Scouts – Daniel Mills, Eleanor Hughes, and Thomas Hughes, recently selected to attend the 2015 World Scout Jamboree in Japan. www.23wsj.jp/index_e.html
Once everyone was full of dinner and whisky toasts, the evening ended with Scottish Dancing, with guests being taught the steps so they could dance (or try to dance!) the Gay Gordons, Strip the Willow , and the Dashing White Sergeant. The evening cost £10.00 a ticket and was incredibly good value and great fun for all the family, and made a good start to these Scouts’ fund raising efforts towards their Japan trip.
The Scouts and their guests enjoyed a traditional Burns’ evening, which started off with bagpipe music to pipe in the haggis. Scout leader Kenny Henry and Bob Lilley were the chefs who provided the traditional Burns supper which started off with Scotch Broth, followed by haggis, neeps and tatties, finishing with homemade Scottish shortbread. There was a mix of Scottish poems, and rousing speeches to toast Robert Burns, and of course the lassies and lads. In between there were visits to the toilets where guests were persuaded to donate money towards twinning the Scout Hut Loos with newly built toilets in Burundi and Cambodia. www.toilettwinning.org/
Further events are being organised by the Scouts, the next being a Beetle Drive on Friday February 14th, contact Cheryl Mills on 01509 650076 or Clare Hughes on 01509 504070 for more details.
ROYAL BRITISH LEGION On behalf of the Royal British Legion, Whitwick branch. Many Thanks to the people of Shepshed and surrounding area for your donations of £3,479.17 for our annual appeal at Remembrance Tide,
Well done ! 6

WHO SAYS THAT THERE AREN'T TRAFFIC ISSUES IN SHEPSHED? This is what occurs when something goes wrong on the A6 at Hathern and traffic is diverted through Shepshed in order to get to the A512 via Field Street and The Bull Ring. These photos prove what the powers that be won't accept and that is that Shepshed suffers from major traffic issues during peak times. Despite the normal traffic congestion Shepshed suffers the situation on Thursday 16th January was beyond belief. I have since heard many tales of conditions before 9.00am. However, my experience began after 9.00am this was when my husband and I entered the traffic flow. The traffic was grid locked in Shepshed at 9.10am and the M1 at a standstill at Junction 23 when on the way to Burleigh Springs-a journey that takes normally about 12 minutes- returning to Shepshed at 10.10 still to a traffic jam along the A512! As the photos show traffic on Field Street at 11.00am and at 11.15am in the Bull Ring was as bad. Chaos - the result of a major incident as that which occurred on the A6 in Hathern the night before from a burst water main causing hours of flooding and a close A6 and what have we got? Mega, mega, havoc causing traffic havoc and untold distress to the residents of the homes affected. Furthermore, add to this an accident on the M1 at approximately 9.00am near the southbound exist of Junction 23 and now what have we got? MAYHEM - with
traffic nose to tail and grid locked in some instances, poor motorists delayed in getting to their work places feeling stressed; and heaven help the havoc reigned on all our emergency services coping with it all as well as their day to day responsibilities. What a mess! I also have sympathy for Severn Trent workers coping with what must have been a déjà vu moment only three weeks after the Boxing Day burst at Kegworth and all the issues that followed afterwards. Thursday morning was an eventful one. I only hope that it may bring hope for those of us that see the advent of 3500 houses being built on the Garendon Estate (with Hathern and Dishley on its perimeter ) with points West of Shepshed as absolutely fool hardy. How it can be beneficial to build a development the size of a new town, with a connecting road between the A6 and the A512 is utterly beyond my comprehensionUrgh! We can speak figuratively "about an accident" waiting to happen", but after last Thursday it certainly did. What on earth would the outcome have been with the addition of 3500 house and a connecting road thrown in? Perhaps Charnwood Borough Council should put building an Ark as a "material planning consideration" for the developers. That would be a new idea for section 106 money! Let us all remember the events of last Thursday and store them in our memories.

CHERA VOCE ANNUAL DINNER
Photo 1 - Taken whilst driving home along the A512 near the lorry park on Thursday 16th January at 10.10am
Photo 2 - Taken on the same morning at 11.00am. This is the congestion along Field Street, Shepshed at 11am. Despite the fact that restrictions exist to prevent HGVs over 7.5 tons travelling through Shepshed this rule didn't appear to hold anyone to account as all sorts of HGVS were coming through the town.
Photo 3 - Taken on the same morning at 11.15am. This is the congestion in the Bull Ring, Shepshed at 11.15am no traffic down the hill but plenty trying to get out!
COMMEMORATION OF THE OUTBREAK OF WORLD WAR 1 Shepshed Liberal Democrat Councillors are seeking your views with regard to commemorating the 100 anniversary of the outbreak of 1st World War which began on 4th August 1914. We would like to hear from you. If you feel this should be commemorated, please email your views to cynthia.popley@ntlworld.com.
Members of Chera Voce met in January for their Annual Dinner. Rehersals have already begun and the group has already accepted booking s for 2014. This year promises to be another of enjoyable performance, friendship and a shared love of harmony singing.
We stress this is not a celebration of the outbreak of war but a commemoration and recognition of the start of a conflict that changed the world. Our next advice surgery will be held on 1st February 2014 at Shepshed Town Council, Charnwood Rd, Shepshed, from 10am to 11am. Appointments are not necessary; for more information, Tel 01509 561458.
Chera Voce’s home is in Shepshed; getting together once a month to rehearse. Their repertoire covers a wide variety of vocal harmony from classical music to modern day musicals. New members are always welcome and no previous singing experience is necessary. Contact details for further information are 01509 505648 or 01509 561458.

STINSONS OF WHITWICK - WHAT A WAY TO GO!
I
t’s been quite a while since I last went to a funeral but I remember the change from mourning to celebrating had started to take place even then. Being able to celebrate life, have family members tell anecdotes and even make some people laugh remembering the happy times is a wonderful way to give thanks for someone’s life. When Anton Rozworski (Ted the Pole’s grandson for those who remember the name) invited me to have a look around the new Stinsons of Whitwick premises I decided to find out what the Independent Funeral Director offers.
I am aware that now colourful celebrations of life are becoming more popular and the wealth of coffin designs available is now larger than ever. From woven willow and sea grass, to beautifully printed coffins showing garden scenes or favourite football teams, to ones with mining pictures and memorabilia printed on them. You can
also have your own photos printed on them to enable you to be laid to rest in your own garden or with your pets around you. My personal favourite has to be the Wensleydale coffin which is handmade in Yorkshire from felted British Wool and lined with organic cotton, the lid is held on with ribbons and wooden toggles and it’s beautifully soft to touch.
Many thanks to the Independent Funeral Directors Stinsons of Whitwick for inviting me to their open weekend and allowing me to photograph just a few of the array of coffins they have available.
It would also appear that the old black hearse is being overlooked and people are opting for more flamboyant ways to go! From motorbike hearses to flatbed trucks it seems anything is now a possibility and if you never used to travel in a car why should your final journey have to be in one?
HAVE YOU GOT ONE? LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY If you became seriously ill or incapacitated who have you appointed to look after your affairs? It is important that you appoint somebody that you trust to do this for you whenever you are unable to do so now or in the future. Whilst you are fit and well you normally have no problem going about your normal everyday affairs. But what if you were to be injured and became incapacitated as a result; or what if you became seriously ill? Who can now look after your financial affairs? Many people think that their spouse, son or daughter could: and it often comes as a shock when they discover they cannot. These things become even more self evident when someone is no longer of sound mind, e.g. Alzheimer’s or a coma. This is not the time for loved ones to find out that they have little or no power.
There also appears to be a growing trend of prebooked funerals so people get exactly what they want and the pressure is off the grieving family, something I intend to give some thought to, Kiri Renton from Stinsons says she enjoys sitting down with people and helping them to plan exactly what they want and if it’s something that’s new they will pull out all the stops to give their clients everything they request.
For more information you can contact Stinsons on 01530 833355 or visit www.stinsonsofwhitwick.co.uk

he has also arranged to purchase surplus produce from the Shepshed Allotment holders. Keeping food miles low is clearly a key concern for the Black Swan.
Miriam met up with Greg Williamson the new manager and had a look round the restaurant and bar. ‘Greg is a very experienced businessman with a clear passion for good food, his love of cooking led to him opening his own restaurant in November last year. Since then The Black Swan has been awarded the highest Food Hygiene rating possible and also the Industry Cask Marque for its quality real ale.
From speaking to Greg it quickly becomes clear that Shepshed is hugely important to him. His chefs are local, his bar staff are all local, his game comes from a local shoot, his meat comes from Webster’s, his vegetables from the new greengrocers and

12 noon the coffee lounge closes as the pub opens for lunches and drinks, pub food is served right through till 6pm. The restaurant which features a mouthwatering A La Carte menu is open from 7pm to 9.30pm with Sunday Lunch been served between 12 noon and 4pm. All food is cooked to order and booking is highly recommended. Local clubs and societies are already booking their meetings and AGM’s at The Black Swan and it is also available to hire for weddings, parties, conferences and wakes.
Looking round the premises it is just what you’d want from a cosy local pub and restaurant; a large open car park, a sizeable dining room with crisply laid tables, a smaller room which would be perfect for hiring out for family parties or business meeting’s and the snug areas in the bar with open fires are an ideal place to relax after your meal.
The Black Swan is also hosting events throughout the year and we will print the details once they are released but I hear they still have some Valentine’s tables available for Friday 14th so I might see you there!’

ebruary is my favourite time to plan the gardening year ahead. The weather may be cold & wet, but it’s a perfect opportunity to thumb through seed catalogues and books for inspiration. With a cup of coffee to hand I love to sit back and plan what I’ll be growing in my garden and what I’ll include in my clients gardens too. I’m plant and garden obsessed! I’m a Garden Designer, I’ve been a professional Plant Grower at local nurseries for 15 years and I’m the Manager of a community grower’s project in Leicester. Planning ahead is crucial if I’m going to spend time in my own garden too! So what will I grow this year? Well the ground is really wet at the moment so I’ll delay planting shrubs and perennials until March, but I will be starting off seeds and bulbs soon. Our local nurseries, garden centres (and DIY stores) now have a range of vegetable seed and seed potatoes to entice us to ‘grow our own’ and bulbs like the colourful Dahlia and Lily too. These shiny packets of loveliness are pretty cheap. I have been known to come home with armfuls, many of which I don’t get around to planting or I lose enthusiasm for later in the year! So when it comes to growing veggies in my garden this year, I’ll be choosing varieties that I know I’m sure to eat having nurtured them through to harvest time. I’ll also include some varieties destined for the Courtyard Kitchen Garden I’ll be developing at the White Peacock Restaurant in Leicester. You can see how this project progresses on my website www.belgrierson.co.uk So on my shopping list for 2014 are Salad Potatoes, Purple Sprouting Broccoli, Salad leaves, French & Runner Beans, Mangetout, Squashes, Beetroot, Tomatoes, Chilli’s and Herbs. I usually struggle to find a use for the more weird and wacky varieties, so I’ve struck those off the list and I don’t spend time cosseting onions, carrots & celery when the farmers do it so well.
I’m always tempted to pick up a few colourful packs of Dahlia and Lily bulbs along with my veg seeds. I’m never sure at the time where I’ll plant them so they inevitable go in to pots or the veg plot. The pots come in useful later in the year adding colour to the patio or the front porch. With my list in hand I’ll be visiting my local nursery & store to see what they have to offer and for those I can’t find there, I’ll buy online from one of the companies that sell small packets of unusual varieties. WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR IN YOUR LOCAL NURSERY, GARDEN CENTRE, GARDEN STORE IN FEBRUARY I can recommend ‘Nicola’, ‘Belle de Fontenay’ and ‘Pink Fir Apple’ seed potatoes which all did fantastically well in my garden last year. Runner Bean ‘Moonlight’ is actually a Runner x French cross with the look and taste of a Runner Bean but the prolific cropping of a French Bean. Squash ‘Red Kuri’ will grow pretty much anywhere and produces tasty red Squash for roasting with garlic & chilli in the Autumn & Winter months. Beetroot ‘Cylindra’ is a favourite and I now mix the seed up with a golden variety too to give more interest. I’ve got a line of it the garden now that I’m still harvesting. Tomato ‘Cuore di Bue’ is a lovely beefsteak variety with hardly any seeds & great for salads. The Dahlia Bishop series is a real winner, flowering for months and Lily Star Gazer is fantastic for summer fragrance. Next month I’ll be looking at preparing new borders and reinvigorate existing areas in the garden to give colour throughout the year. Spring will be in the air so there’ll be a range of bulbs and heathers available at the nurseries & garden centres perfect for adding the early season splash of colour. To find out what else I’m up to in the garden this month check out my website www.belgrierson.co.uk and Facebook page belgriersondesign

FLOODING IN SHEPSHED
We all know that Shepshed is prone to flooding. Up to now the Environment Agency has produced maps which show the risk of flooding from Rivers and the Sea. These indicate that up to now only the very North of Shepshed and the fields to the West are at risk of flooding, chiefly from the Blackbrook.
Last December, however, the Environment Agency updated these maps and produced a new set of maps which show areas at risk of flooding from surface water. Surface water flooding happens when rainwater does not drain away through the normal drainage systems or soak into the ground, but lies on or flows over the ground instead. Residents can check for themselves whether their property is likely to be affected by going onto the Environment Agency Website www.environment-agency.gov.uk and click on the word Flood which leads you to a page with links to both sets of flood maps.
grateful to the Town Council for their invitation to come and talk to them on the issue of flooding at a future meeting.
The maps also will also be useful to the Town Council and those groups concerned about planning applications having a negative impact on the existing drainage pattern of their area. There are many councils now which adopt a zero impact approach demanding a SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems) approach for all new housing which removes the effect of development on surface water run-off. These measures include balancing ponds, storm water detention and infiltration as well as porous paving and road surfaces.
These new surface water maps show whole new areas of Shepshed at risk of flooding. Smaller tributaries of the Blackbrook are shown which extend the flooding along three different lines through the town from the North right through to the Ashby Road. Not only will this information concern householders who may not have realised their property is at risk but it may well have an impact on them financially. It is likely that once the maps become more widely known and used, property searches by potential house buyers will reveal those houses now identified at risk of flooding and so affect the value of the property. Insurance companies are also looking at these maps with a view to adjusting flood premiums. Some companies are refusing insurance for housing known to be at risk of flooding which leaves the householder to apply to specialist insurance companies. In cases I have known in Loughborough they have raised the premium from £200 a year to £1,700 a year or in another case from £180 to £600 with a £10,000 excess. The Government had in the past negotiated an agreement with the Association of British Insurers on a joint Statement of Principles (SoP) for the provision of flood risk insurance which expired at the end of July 2013 but is continuing to be used for the time being while negotiations continue over flood insurance. However in the long run there is no guarantee that insurers will insure houses identified in the maps in areas of high flood risk or will demand prohibitive premiums for flood insurance. Although these maps will be a disappointment to many householders in Shepshed they also provide an opportunity for them via the councillors to work with Shepshed Town Council, Charnwood Borough Council, the County Council and Environment Agency on ways of reducing the risk of flooding, some by work on streams and water courses, others on highway drainage etc. I am
Climate change is causing more extreme patterns of weather, in particular, flooding. These maps should be a call to action by all tiers of local government and the Environment Agency to identify solutions to the worse cases of flooding in the Loughborough Area and National Government to provide the necessary funding for these. In this season of heavy wet weather, there has never been a better time to raise the issue of flooding in Shepshed.
Dr Matthew O’Callaghan
Labour Parliamentary Candidate for Loughborough I have been studying flooding issues in this area since 1999 when I chaired a Flood Task Force comprising of representatives of Charnwood and Melton Borough Councils, County Council and Environment Agency. This followed the disastrous floods of 1998 which left the centre of Melton Mowbray under water and caused extensive flooding in many parts of Charnwood Borough and the rest of the Midlands. The Bye Report commissioned by the Government in the wake of these floods examined the circumstances around the flooding in Melton Mowbray and overhauled the responsibility of the Environment Agency for flooding. As a result of the work of the Task Force a £6.7m dam was built 2 miles upstream from Melton Mowbray and other flood alleviation work carried out in the Charnwood Area.

CHRISTINE RADFORD | BOROUGH COUNCILLOR’S COLUMN TEL: 01509 502974 - MOB: 07796 544817 - EMAIL: christine_radford@hotmail.com My role as a Borough Councillor can be very varied and interesting, dealing with housing problems, neighbour problems or planning issues. I have been contacted by residents concerning differing housing issues which I have been able to rectify and pleased to say that there are ongoing improvements to Council properties. I am given to understand that the 3 large new housing applications, one between Tickow Lane and Conway Drive, one on Tickow Lane behind Westroyd and one on Hallamford Road (the road leading to Belton) will all be heard on the same evening, Either on 27th February or 27th March. I shall as ward Councillor speak at the planning committee.
of Iveshead Road, between Morley Lane and Iveshead Lane. This proposal would mean the demolition of a bungalow on Iveshead Road to enable access to land at the rear. This application has not as yet been formally lodged with Charnwood. I attended the Flood Fair at the Loughborough Town Hall and mentioned the concerns that the residents, Town Councillors and myself have regarding all the proposed developments around Shepshed on areas which are prone to flooding. I’m pleased to report that following lengthy intervention by myself and Charnwood Borough Council, the area of land off Abbey Close, known as a SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage System) has now been cleaned out and the fence either replaced or repaired. This has taken over 18months to bring to fruition.
In addition to my work as a Councillor I have been supporting many community groups in Shepshed on various issues. I would like to take this opportunity to thank those residents of Shepshed who have kept me informed of progress regarding issues I have taken up on their behalf and also the letters of thanks/emails that I have received. It is very helpful to be kept informed of progress or otherwise as I am only too well aware of how issues can get lost in the ‘system’. I continue to hold a monthly surgery in the Town Council offices with other Conservative Councillors from 10-11am on the last Saturday of every month except December.

The new housing currently being built is already causing flooding on Tickow Lane (this area has far I know has never flooded in the past) and highway problems around the site which have taken up some of my time. On Friday 31st January a Public exhibition was held to give residents the change to inspect a forthcoming application for an additional 199 houses on land to the rear Pick any of the areas we deliver our magazine’s to and we will print and deliver your A5 leaflet in colour, single or doubled sided. *Leaflets to be supplied.

CHRISTINE RADFORD | COUNTY COUNCILLOR’S COLUMN
TEL: 01509 502974 - MOB: 07796 544817 - EMAIL: christine_radford@hotmail.com As your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal, with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council. (LCC). At a recent Shepshed Town Council meeting representatives from A.E.Burgess came to brief the Council on their application for a Waste Transfer, Treatment and Recycling facility at the former Redland Tile Works on Ingleberry Road. A lengthy discussion followed and resulted in A.E.Burgess agreeing not to accept PCB’s on site. The company will withdraw the appropriate code from the planning application. In addition, all electrical waste and electronic equipment will be stored either within the site building or outside within a weatherproof container. The storage will comply with Environment Agency and Government guidance. The
majority of the recycling to take place on this site will occur within the existing building. This application is due to go before the County on the 13th February. I expect it will be approved now that your Town Councillors major concerns have been allayed. It was also agreed that a liaison Committee be established and as your County Councillor I will endorse this agreement and ask that it be a condition as part of the final approval. As your County Councillor I have written to the Department of Education at County Hall asking that they initiate the procedure to have land set aside for a new primary school in Shepshed. It is my belief that Shepshed is in need of another primary school given the number of new houses planned in the coming years (over 1,000 in the Tickow Lane area alone). I am aware that some of the existing
schools have a limited amount of capacity, but the use of mobiles to extend schools is not satisfactory even where mobiles can be accommodated without taking up precious play areas. My concern is that if nothing is done at this stage, the most suitable locations may finish up being used for housing. I have the support of the majority of the Town Councillors from all political parties on this issue. None of this means I am in favour of all the proposed housing, but I am mindful that we need to do our best for the young children of the future. I hold a monthly surgery at the Council Offices in Shepshed between 10-11am on the last Saturday of every month (except December).

SYMPTOMS of dry eyes include:
• Dryness • Burning or stinging • Gritty feeling • Irritation from wind or smoke • Blurred or smeary vision • Watery eyes • Red eyes or eyelids • Sensitivity to bright lights • Contact lens discomfort.
