WELCOME TO YOUR FIRST EDITION OF 2014! I hope you all had a great Christmas and wish you all a Happy New Year. As ever our local clubs and societies have been very busy and raised hundreds of pounds for good causes during the festive season, thank you to all involved and to all those of you who have generously donated.

PRE-PAYMENT ONLY JANUARY - FEBRUARY - MARCH

We at Community Eye magazine are also raising money for a very worthy cause. We are supporting the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance, who cover 3850 square miles of the midlands, providing emergency care to those who need it most. Sadly I have had cause to use the air ambulance after a friend of mine suffered a heart attack in the middle of the countryside. Knowing that paramedics could reach us so fast was fantastically reassuring to those of us providing CPR. Please help us to support them by donating to our Just Giving page or by texting OPEN 64 followed by the amount you wish to donate to 70070. More details can be found on page 4. Finally if you would like to advertise with us for 2014 please don’t hesitate to get in touch, we provide great value, ensuring that your advert makes it through 5800 letter boxes in Shepshed every month.

RYATT OPTOMETRY CELEBRATING 7 YEARS Ryatt Optometry is celebrating 7years in Shepshed this month. Since the opening of our practice, we have worked hard to provide excellent eyecare and good value for your eyewear.

We know you have a choice when it comes to eyecare and we appreciate the custom you have given us for the past 7 years. To celebrate this event, Ryatt Optometry is offering all current and new patients 15% discount on all eyewear till the end of February 2014. 'The key to our success has been listening to our patients and ensuring their needs are central to everything we do. 'We have been overwhelmed by the local support we have experienced over the years, not only for our business, but also for the charity and community work we have been involved in. We have collected over 1000 pairs of unwanted specs from local residents, all of which have been donated to Vision Aid Overseas for use in the developing world. 'It's been a fantastic seven years and we're delighted to be celebrating this milestone with our patients and well wishers.

SHEPSHED LIONS CLUB A TALE TO MELT YOUR HEART

Lion Bob Lilley, Coordinator for the Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responder Scheme has been trying to raise funds for equipment for the scheme and its volunteers. He has written to many companies and organisations to try and raise funds to develop the scheme and set up another scheme in nearby Loughborough. However, a source closer to home has been considering how she can support the project. This source is Bob’s Grandaughter, Jessica Docherty, aged 6 years. In a conversation with her mother, Nicola, Jessica asked “ Mummy, I know that Santa Claus sends some presents for me, and other people send me presents, but could you ask Santa to bring me one less present and give the money to Grandad for his heart people? Jessica’s mother said “ It is a bit too late as you have already sent your letter to Santa.” Jessica said, “OK mummy. So can I please give Grandad all the pennies out of my money box for his heart people?’ Jessica’s mother said “Grandad wouldn’t want you to take your pennies out of your money box”. Jessica then said, “Can you help me make something to sell to get some pennies for Grandads heart people”. Jessica’s mother said, “I don’t think we can make anything to sell”. Jessica was clearly disappointed so Nicola thought about what she could do to help Jessica achieve her goal to help Grandads heart people so Nicola contacted the Head Teacher at Jessica’s school, St Winefrides’ Voluntary Academy in Shepshed and he agreed to allow all of the children to have an “own clothes day” on the last day of term where each child donates £1 to the scheme for wearing their own clothes. When Jessica was asked why she wanted to donate to the scheme she said, “ I know how important it is to Grandad and his heart people. Grandad and his heart people are trying to help people who are poorly, so I want to help Grandad.” Jessica raised a total of £120 for the funds that will be used to purchase equipment for the team.

SANTA SLEIGH COLLECTION

Shepshed Lions Club members are delighted to announce that the Santa Sleigh Collection undertaken by Santa Claus and Lions Members raised a substantial amount of money to be used for charitable causes. Santa was delighted with the response by all of the children and the parents he met. This year the club raised more than in previous years and Lion Bob Lilley said “ It never ceases to amaze us in the Lions Club how generous and supportive the public of Shepshed are. These are very difficult times for many people but this does not deter the public in supporting us.”

PRESENTATION OF A CHEQUE FOR £650 TO THE SALVATION ARMY

On Monday 16th December 2013 Shepshed Lions Club President Dave Jackson, together with his wife Lion Lynn, presented a cheque for £650 to Captain Anita Perkuss of the Salvation Army. The presentation was made in response to the request for funds to get homeless people in Charnwood off the streets for Christmas. The Salvation Army provides temporary accommodation, medical and health checks, food and support for homeless people. During the Festive Season.

PRESENTATION OF £1000 WORTH OF FOOD TO THE CARPENTERS ARMS AT LOUGHBOROUGH

COMMUNITY FIRST RESPONDERS In an effort to raise awareness and raise some funds, members of the newly formed Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responder Scheme attended the beer festival held at the Crown Hotel in Shepshed on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th December 2013. The team gave demonstrations on basic life support and use of the defibrillator to customers attending the event. A total of £94 was generously donated to the scheme by customers in the pub, and two local businessmen, Tom Wilkinson and Harry Singh donated £75 each to enable the team to purchase two sets of defibrillator pads. Lion Bob Lilley, who is coordinator for the scheme said” This event was important for us as we are trying to raise awareness of what the scheme involves and what we are trying to achieve. The funds raised will be used to purchase new equipment and uniform for the team. Two potential new members for the scheme were also identified and this will enable us to provide more cover and support for the community and East Midlands Ambulance Service. We would like to thank Linda and John Savage for allowing us to attend this event.” If anyone is interested in volunteering or in sponsoring the scheme can contact Bob Lilley on 01509 508265 or by e-mail at thelilleys15@gmail.com

Santa Claus came to the assistance of Lion President Dave Jackson of Shepshed Lions Club in presenting £1000 worth of festive food to the Carpenters Arms at Loughborough. Lion Susan Lilley, who is a member of the welfare committee of the club, discovered that many families from Shepshed benefit from food parcels from the project. Following some enquiries and a discussion by the committee it was decided to boost the Christmas Parcels given out by the Carpenters Arms staff. The food was delivered on Wednesday 11th December 2013. Santa can be seen with Lions Club President Dave, Lion Susan Lilley and staff from the Carpenters Arms. The photograph was taken by Lion Lynn Jackson who also helped with the delivery of the foodstuffs,. A spokesman for the Carpenters Arms Project said, “This is a fantastic and generous donation from Shepshed Lions Club which will make a big difference to many families and individuals this Christmas”.

NICKY MORGAN | AN UPDATE FROM YOUR LOCAL MP Tel: 01509 262723 - Email: nicky.morgan.mp@parliament.uk I expect that, by the time you read this, 2014 will be a few weeks old. I hope that you and your loved ones had a peaceful and enjoyable Christmas and I wish you all the best for a happy 2014.

learnt a great deal and was able to ask all the (non-health related) questions I would love to ask when I visit my GP but it isn’t really appropriate to do so!

I certainly enjoyed visiting the many Christmas events held locally, including the Christmas Tree Festival at St Botolph’s and the Victorian Fair held in the Church Hall. I also had my strangest assignment in Shepshed that day when the Rev Cynthia Hebden and I had to cut the hair of Richard III (aka David Whittington) in aid of charity. I certainly think I have no future in hair dressing and I hope David’s haircut hasn’t led to too many strange comments!

If the thought of running seems a bit daunting, then how about joining a friendly running group organised by Run England? Why not find out more here: www.lrsport. org/sports/running. And there is a great opportunity to test your new fitness levels by taking part in the Loughborough Half Marathon in aid of Loughborough-based charity, Living Without Abuse, in March. You can sign up here www.loughboroughhalf. co.uk - and I will see you at the start line!

Last month I spent a fascinating morning shadowing Dr Badiani at the Forest House Surgery in Shepshed. Thank you to him, his patients and all his staff for allowing me to sit in on the reception and in his surgery. I

Or perhaps your resolution is to get more involved in your local community. Well, an excellent opportunity will be presenting itself soon as plans for the 2014 Shepshed Show kick off with a launch event on

Did you make any New Year’s resolutions? Perhaps one of them was to do more sport and exercise?

Monday 17 February at Shepshed High School from 7pm. I think everyone who attended the 2013 show will agree that it was a fabulous event and I look forward to supporting this year’s show. Finally, I know Shepshed residents have been concerned about the future of services provided at Loughborough’s Community Hospital. In December the Health Minister, Dr Daniel Poulter, and I met the West Leicestershire Clinical Commissioning Group who commission those services when we visited the Urgent Care Centre. Both the Minister and I pressed the CCG Management hard on their plans for the hospital. The CCG made it clear to the Minister that the hospital has an important role to play in ensuring a full range of services are delivered closer to home. As Dr Nick Pulman, Chair of the West Leicestershire CCG said in our joint press release, “I hope this will help to reassure the local community that we are firmly committed to Loughborough Community hospital.”

MORTGAGE SUPPORT TO CONTINUE INTO 2014

EXTRA MONEY FOR SCHOOL PLACES WELCOMED

Leicestershire County Council has pledged to continue its mortgage support scheme into the New Year, alongside the Government’s Help to Buy initiative. Council leader Nick Rushton wants local people to continue using the scheme, as there are still outstanding funds available with Lloyds Bank.

Almost £55 million will be ploughed into creating new school places across Leicestershire over the next three years. The money, announced by the government last week, will enable Leicestershire County Council to build new classrooms and construct new schools.

Last year, the county council agreed to lend Lloyds Bank £10 million, enabling it to offer low-cost mortgages to up to 400 first time buyers. Under the scheme, buyers have to find a deposit of just five per cent. So far, £6.7 million of the council’s deposit with Lloyds has been used to underwrite Local Lend a Hand mortgages, which has resulted in 312 mortgages being approved and 236 purchases completed. Recently, the Government has also launched its own scheme, known as Help to Buy, which gives people another option when it comes to taking out a mortgage. Nick Rushton said: “The council’s Local Lend a Hand scheme has been a massive success within Leicestershire and we want it to continue for as long as there is demand for it. It’s allowed many first-time buyers to enter the housing market with much lower deposits than would otherwise have been required, for mortgages of £142,500 or less.”

It can be used to develop new school places in circumstances where there might be increased births forecast, or families moving to a particular school’s catchment area. It’s been allocated in response to a three-year school place plan submitted by the council. Ivan Ould, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for children and young peple, said: “This is excellent news and shows that the government has recognised the need for investment in our schools. “We are beginning to experience significant demand for school places, especially in the primary sector, but this money means we can ensure there are sufficient spaces available for children. We’re awaiting further information from the government and this will enable us to work with schools and other partners to work up a detailed plan early in the new year.” • PC, Laptop and Tablet repairs. • Networking, Wireless and Security. • XP/Vista upgrade to Windows 7 or 8.

HOW THE SCHEME WORKS

• Troubleshooting and Maintenance.

• The council lends money from its reserves to Lloyds Bank. • The money allows the bank to offer mortgages of up to £142,500, reducing the size of deposit that first-time buyers have to find to just five per cent. • After five years, the bank repays the money, plus interest, to the council. For further details, or to apply for a mortgage, visit any Lloyds Bank branch in Leicestershire.

CHRISTINE RADFORD | BOROUGH COUNCILLOR’S COLUMN TEL: 01509 502974 - MOB: 07796 544817 - EMAIL: christine_radford@hotmail.com My role as a Borough Councillor can be very varied and interesting, dealing with housing problems, neighbour problems or planning issues. Would you like to remain living an independent life in your home, but are a little worried about having a fall or becoming ill in your home or garden? Lifeline is a Charnwood Borough Council facility available to anyone over 60, or those who are vulnerable or disabled in any way and would benefit from the added support of this device. It is available for any type of home, including privately owned.

The service runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Connected to an already existing phone line in your home, the device comes with a pendant to keep around the neck. Should you need assistance, just press the button on the pendant and the Lifeline Team will be able to talk to you. They can then take the appropriate action which could include calling your designated contact, coming to see you or calling the emergency services. The cost is a £30 one off charge to install the equipment and £50 per quarter for the service. This may be reduced if you are on benefits. To find out more details, call Charnwood Borough Council on 01509 643970.

GRANTS AVAILABLE Do you have a son or daughter who will be leaving school or college, July 2014, to go onto further education such as University, college or into an apprenticeship? I sit on a Charity (Thomas Harley’s Charities) which gives out grants to students whose family income is less than £35,000 per year. Grants can go towards equipment, (as in hairdressing, carpenter, car mechanic), books or towards accommodation. They will need a letter of support from their tutor to support their application. Our next meeting to discuss grants for the next financial year is in March 2014. For more information please contact me, Christine Radford on: 01509 502974.

FOOTPATH K62 CLOSED Footpath K62, which runs from Banbury Drive to Tickow Lane, will be closed from 6th January for 6 weeks to enable Wm Davis to carry out work on it. There is not a alternative footpath.

I am pleased to report that I have now received a copy of the Tree Preservation Order for land off Anson Road/Tickow Lane, which was dated 8th November, 2013. This is for 21 trees together with 6 groups of trees. I have given the Clerk to Shepshed Town Council a copy and I also have a copy should anybody wish to take a look. I will be keeping an eye on these trees together with monitoring the building works when residents contact me regarding any concerns they may have. I continue to hold a monthly surgery in the Town Council offices with other Conservative Councillors from 10-11am on the last Saturday of every month except December.

Christine Radford FLOOD FAIR

Leicestershire County Council are hosting a Flood Fair to raise awareness of flood risk in Charnwood, on 30th January 2.00 7.00pm in Loughborough Town Hall. For further information contact the Flood Risk Management Team by email: flooding@leics.gov.uk or phone 0116 305 0001

ENERGY SAVING NETWORK I have just heard about a new initiative being run. I would like to take a few minutes of your time to tell you about BIG ENERGY SAVING NETWORK (BESN), a Department of Energy and Climate Change funded initiative to help vulnerable households reduce their energy cost through ‘assisted action’ on tariffs, switching and take up of energy efficiency offers. Free, impartial advice about sessions are being run, and for further information about 4 Ways to Warmth please call 01509 634937 or email Jennifer.roberts@charnwood.gov.uk

CHRISTINE RADFORD | COUNTY COUNCILLOR’S COLUMN

TEL: 01509 502974 - MOB: 07796 544817 - EMAIL: christine_radford@hotmail.com As your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal, with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council. (LCC). I am pleased that Shepshed Town Council has written to Leicestershire County Council stating their concerns regarding the proposed Waste Transfer, Treatment and Recycling facility on Ingleberry Road. LE12 9DE. (LCC No. 2013/CM/0347/LCC. As County Councillor I have asked that this application goes before a Committee to be discussed. I shall speak at this Committee and Shepshed Town Council has asked that a representative speaks. Residents can also ask to speak and raise any concerns they may have. The Clerk to Shepshed Town Council has organised for a representative from A. E. Burgess, the applicants for this facility to talk to and answer questions at a meeting of the Town

Council on 8th January. If you would like any points raising, please contact your local Town Councillor to get the matter raised. The County has organised a Jobs and Skills Fair to be held in Loughborough Town Hall on Thursday 16th January between 11am and 3pm. 36 exhibitors have already been confirmed so this is a great opportunity for people looking for work, training, and guidance in finding a job or setting up their own business. Anyone is welcome to attend if you would like further information please get in touch with Sarah Rudkin call 0116 3057023 or email: sarah.rudkin@leics.gov.uk. I have been approached by a number of residents regarding the grit bins having not yet been filled. I have chased these up, if you are concerned about a grit bin near to you not yet having been filled with salt/grit please get in touch. It is too late this year to have a grit bin placed near to you. If you request one, properties near to the proposed site have to agree to its

location and in some cases approval is not forthcoming. Please remember this grit/ salt is for use only on public footpaths and dangerous junctions, not for private drives. The Local Authority Mortgage Scheme for Leicestershire which commenced in September 2012 has been lent £7.4 million by the County Council. To date 312 mortgages have been approved, and of these 236 have already been completed. The total value of mortgages that have been agreed is £35m. The County Council’s scheme has undoubtedly been a success within Leicestershire and has allowed many first time buyers to enter the housing market with much lower deposits than would otherwise have been required. I hold a monthly surgery at the Council Offices in Shepshed between 10-11am on the last Saturday of every month (except December).

"SAFE PLACES" TO AID NEW YEAR SHOPPERS

LOUGHBOROUGH ORCHESTRA WINTER CONCERT

Shoppers making the most of the new year sales are reminded that "Keep Safe Places" have been established in busy retail areas across Leicester and Leicestershire. With town and city centres bustling with people keen to bag a bargain, the venues are available for anyone who feels vulnerable, upset, scared or distressed.

On Saturday January 25th the Loughborough Orchestra will present its Winter concert in Trinity Methodist Church Centre, Loughborough at 7.30pm. Included in the programme are some very well known pieces of music; the most popular of these being the Haydn Trumpet concerto in Eb.

Set up in libraries and shops, including Age UK shops and businesses, staff can offer immediate reassurance to anyone that needs it. Staff can offer basic support, including a place to sit down and contacting friends or relatives if necessary, or the emergency services if required. The initiative has been developed by the county council in partnership with the police, city and district / borough councils, local community partnerships and Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland. Joe Orson, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for community safety, said: “Shopping areas are traditionally very busy at this time of year with people clamouring to bag a new year bargain. "We want people to know there are ‘safe havens’ they can go to if they are feeling upset, scared or distressed." Changes to the scheme mean that users now also have the option of being referred to First Contact, a multi-agency initiative that checks if people would benefit from a host of services and advice such as getting the right benefits, smoke alarms, help with their finances or support for carers. Venues that are Keep Safe Places display special stickers. Details of where Keep Safe Places are located can be found, including photos of the venues, can be found at: www.leics.gov.uk/keepsafeplaceschemes

CHERA VOCE’S Chera Voce’s programme of performances finished 2013 with a variety of concerts in Shepshed and Birstall in aid of local charities, along with a selection of Christmas carols and seasonal favourites for charity in Loughborough’s Carillon Court. Chera Voce is a group of singers who share a love of harmony singing. They are based in Shepshed, getting together once a month to rehearse. Their repertoire covers a wide variety of vocal harmony from classical music to modern day musicals. New members are always welcome and no previous singing experience is necessary. Contact details for further information are 01509 505648 or 01509 561458.

Rebecca Robertson is to be the guest soloist for this performance. Rebecca graduated with Honours from the Royal Northern College of Music in 2010 before spending two years at the Conservatoire regionale Rayonneent de Jean Philippe Rameau at Dijon. She has also been a member of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain for 4 years. Her guest spot with the Loughborough Orchestra completes a circle of trumpet playing! Rebecca’s father was one of the first pupils of Trevor Lax, conductor of the Loughborough Orchestra. The evening also includes the “Prelude to Hänsel and Gretel” by Humperdinck and “Night on a Bald Mountain” by Mussorgsky, arranged by Rimsky Korsakov. This spooky piece featured in the Disney film “Fantasia”, giving it a much wider audience. The final orchestral piece is Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony, with its memorable melodies. Parts of the Symphony have been used for a variety of different musical uses including film music and advertising for Australian TV, besides inspiring other themes and songs.

SMOKERS URGED TO QUIT THIS NEW YEAR Give up smoking this year, or you’ll do untold damage to your body. That’s the hard-hitting message from a new national campaign, backed by Leicestershire County Council, to encourage smokers to quit. Public Health England has launched TV advertising which shows how smoking puts toxins into a smoker’s bloodstream, which are then pumped around the body and into the brain. Ernie White, Leicestershire County Council’s cabinet member for health, said: “The New Year offers a new start for the two-thirds of smokers who are trying to quit. The risks of smoking are clear but there is lots of practical help and support on offer to help people to give up.” More than 2,600 Leicestershire smokers gave up cigarettes during October’s Stoptober campaign in Leicestershire which makes them five times more likely to quit, permanently. Benefits of quitting include: • An extra week of life, for every month you quit • Savings of £150 per month, or almost £2,000 per year Here are the key facts about stopping smoking: • After 20 minutes, your blood pressure and pulse return to normal • After 24 hours, your lungs start to clear • After two days, your body is nicotine-free and your sense of taste and smell improve • After three days, you can breathe more easily, and your energy increases • After two to 12 weeks, your circulation improves • After three to nine months coughs, wheezing and breathing improves • After one year, your heart attack risk is half that of a smoker • After 10 years, your lung cancer risk is half that of a smoker The county council funds work in Leicestershire by the stopsmoking service, STOP! Other work includes: • Working with schools, the Youth Offending Service and others to help change perceptions and reduce the number of young people using tobacco • Step Right Out, a smoke-free homes and cars campaign • Home fire safety inspections and fire alarms, through the fire service • Work by Trading Standards to clamp down on under-age and illegal sales of tobacco products For further information see www.leicspart.nhs.uk/_OurServicesSTOPSmokingService.aspx or call 0845 045 2828

A THANK YOU FROM SHEPSHED FOODBANK All those involved with working with Carpenters’ Arms in Loughborough to bring food parcels to the Shepshed clients would like to thank all the volunteers who regularly give their time to ensure there is a regular service. We should also like to thank all those who have contributed tinned and dry goods to the collection points at St Botolph’s Church, St Winefrides’s Church, the Glenmore Centre, BOAL Aluminium and ASDA. It is not easy for Churches to set aside space for a collection point and not every business is able to encourage its staff and customers to donate. Without these regular collections the foodbank would not be able to ensure a parcel service for those families and individuals in need. We wish all our donors, volunteers and clients a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year and we shall work to continue the service in 2014 with the support of the generous residents and businesses of Shepshed.

CHRISTMAS DAY LUNCH PROJECT Yet again we have had another successful Christmas Day lunch at the Glenmore Centre for people who would otherwise have been spending probably quite a lonely day on their own. A big thank you must go to all the volunteers who have given up their time to help, thus ensuring the day was a huge success, without them the day would not have taken place. The local community has also been very generous with donations, raffle prizes, Christmas crackers and hampers. Guests enjoyed the day so much they are already talking about next Christmas!
