SHEPSHED WI Shepshed WI met on 5th June and enjoyed a talk from Amy from Twycross Zoo. The brain child of Molly Badham and Nathalie Evans, coupled with their intense love of primates, Twycross Zoo was founded in 1963 to fulfil their dream of protecting primates and set standards which were to be followed by zoos around the world for years to come. In the beginning they treated the chimps as children and started the famous chimps tea parties and the PG Tips chimps. These no longer take place but one of the original chimps is still alive. Twycross has come a very long way since its opening. Now a registered charity, the zoo is renowned as a specialist primate

centre and has a wide variety of monkeys and all four great ape species, including the UK’s only group of bonobos. Twycross Zoo has always been famous for the breeding of primates and has recorded first UK births for thirteen different species. It was reported that Shepshed WI had won their darts match against Breedon 4 games to 3, and the next match will take place at Walton on the Wolds. A bursery for a course at the WI’s Denman college will be awarded later this year and members were asked to fill a jar with sweets for a tombola to be held at the Carnival on 24th August. Details of a visit to the Bell Foundry museum were also given and plans for a craft meeting to make bunting to celebrate the WI’s centenary later this year.

D DAY ANNIVERSARY THEMED AFTERNOON TEA PARTY IN AID OF CHRISTCHURCH’S ACCESS 4 ALL FUND Commemorating the 70th anniversary of D Day was the theme for a fundraising afternoon tea party in aid of Christchurch's Access 4 All fund. The event was held at the home of John, Cynthia and Robin Popley who attend Christchurch. Access 4 All is a project that is underway to improve the access at Christchurch by altering the entrance into the church and installing a lift to the first floor. This is an ambitious project and building work is hoped to begin later in the year. Over a long period, many fundraising events have happened to help the Access 4 All fund and there are dates throughout the year of further fundraising activities. Christchurch is well used by Community groups in Shepshed.

Every Friday morning is Coffee Morning at Christchurch. Each week volunteers carry out the coffee morning rota providing home made cakes, teas and coffees opening from 9.30am to 12noon. This was started many years ago as a place for members of the community to call in for refreshments with money raised helping church projects. The years that the Friday Coffee Mornings have been going have provided a place to spend time, chat and share friendships.

Lions Club member Alastair Frobisher showed everyone he was at his peak over the weekend 20th to 24th June 2014 by undertaking the 3 Peaks Challenge by walking and climbing up Mount Snowden, Sca Fell Pike and Ben Nevis in 24 hours. He undertook this challenge to raise funds to support the Community First Responders Scheme. He was exhausted when he finished the event but was delighted when he realised how much he had raised in sponsorship for the project, a massive £985 that will enable the scheme to purchase another Defibrillator and kit bag for the team. Coordinator of the scheme, Lion Bob Lilley said “Alastair is a member of the Shepshed Lions Club but due to his work and family commitments he has been unable to volunteer for the project, but wanted to help and support it in other ways. This was a massive boost to the scheme and a terrific effort by Alastair to support it. I am delighted”.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace

the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer

requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Shepshed & the surrounding area and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I

get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

GARDENING

S

ummer is here at long last and thoughts turn towards holidays and breaks from the hectic lifestyle. Spending time with friends in the garden, lighting the BBQ and grabbing a beer or two is high on the agenda, so during the sunniest months it’s good to have a break from the gardening chores. So this month I take a look at choosing plants that are low maintenance. By being selective, choosing plants that require little deadheading, trimming and staking, it’s possible to create a space that looks good without much TLC.

EVERGREENS

There are a several garden-worthy shrubs that look good throughout the year without the need for intensive maintenance. Hebes are number one on the list of must haves. There are plenty to choose from depending on your style. I favour Hebe ‘Sutherlandii’ for use as a soft rounded alternative to topiary, with the added benefit of white flowers. For a brighter splash of flower colour H. ‘Purple Shamrock’, H. ‘Midsummer Beauty’ and H. ‘Nicolas Blush’ will bloom well during summer. Larger varieties may need an occasional trim to keep them in a tidy shape, but that’s all. Lavender is a British favourite for a good reason long lasting blooms, scented foliage and tidy grey-green foliage. English varieties are the hardiest where as the French varieties with the ‘butterfly tops’ will thrive best in sheltered spots. They only require a trim immediately after flowering to stop them going woody and keep them in a good shape. They suit borders and containers with well-drained soil/compost. Lavender ‘Hidcote’ and ‘Munstead’ are compact varieties ideal for hedges. Choisya are very useful in gardens to creating a rounded bush with attractive glossy foliage. They bear fragrant white flowers in May-June on well behaved plants. These rarely need any care, so are ideal for low maintenance areas. They’re best in a sunny border away from cold winds. C. ‘White Dazzler’ is worth seeking out.

Bel Grierson

Garden Designer & Plantswoman

FOR A SPLASH OF COLOUR Perennial Geraniums such as the much loved G. ‘Johnson’s Blue’ and the new G. ‘Rozanne’ will give colour to the borders for months at a time. If they stop flowering simple give them a hard trim down to the ground and a feed with a liquid fertiliser and they will be up and flowering in a few weeks. Penstemons are valuable for late summer colour. In a sunny sheltered spot with well-drained soil, they will happily establish and give a vibrant display for months. Their bushy habit means they don’t need staking just a light deadhead every couple of weeks to prolong the flowering. I favour the old hardier varieties such as P. ‘Hewells Pink’ and P. ‘Garnet’ which have elegant blooms.

Herbes

Geraniums

11

Fuchsias are hard working plants able to flower all summer long. They are available in a huge colour range and there are trailers for window boxes or bushes for pots and borders. They will happily flower nonstop in a lightly shaded spot with moist soil. Heucheras are now available in a rainbow of colours. Most are grown for their vibrant semi-evergreen foliage but there is also a range with stunning flowers too look out for the plants named after cities e.g. Hollywood which is a favourite of mine. These all require little TLC and will look good pretty much all year around. Try them in pots and borders. With the pots and borders now planted they will require watering until they establish, especially as the weather warms up, so next month I’ll be looking at the best irrigation methods for the garden and which fertilisers to choose to make the most of your plants.

ARE YOU PLANNING A LOW MAINTENANCE GARDEN ON A TIGHT BUDGET? I am donating approx. 3 tons of 20mm golden gravel (worth app. £180) to a local home/school in need. It’s ideal for covering membrane for a weed free garden. It is loose so will need bagging up by the collector and removing from site in Shepshed. The full quantity must be taken & by the 27thJuly. N.B the collector will need their own suitable bags and vehicle to move this heavy load! Get in touch asap if interested. If you need help to make your garden low maintenance or you are looking for design ideas, a Consultation or Planting Plan may be just what you need. Take a look at my website for details of the services I offer www.belgrierson.co.uk or call me on 07506 750250.

LOCAL NEWS

SHEPSHED TOWN COUNCIL PRESENT £6000 CHEQUE TO SHEPSHED VOLUNTEER CENTRE Below is a quotation from both Mrs Whitmore and the Chairman of Shepshed Town Council “Shepshed Volunteer Centre is extremely grateful to Shepshed Town Council and would like to thank them for their continued support of this worthwhile service. This financial help enables us to continue to provide our services to the people of Shepshed, indeed without this funding, the centre would not be here. We hope that the council will be able to continue to support us for the foreseeable future.” PHOTO: From left to right, Cllr Joan Tassell (Chairman of Shepshed Town Council), Cllr Barry Perkins (Vice-Chairman) and Mrs Angie Whitmore (Activities Support Worker Shepshed Volunteer Centre).

"Shepshed Town Council are Happy to be able to support once again this year the Shepshed Volunteer Centre. The work they do in the town would be greatly missed by the residents who depend on their help to stay in their own homes and remain independent".

SHEPSHED TOWN TEAM AWARDED FUNDING TO ENHANCE TOWN CENTRE AND SHOP FRONT IMPROVEMENTS Shepshed Town Team is looking forward to an enhanced town centre after securing £10,000 from the County Council’s Better Places fund and £50,000 from Charnwood Borough Council to be directed towards shop front improvements. Both schemes will be discussed at the next meeting of the Town Team which is to be held at Shepshed High School from 6:30 pm on Monday 14th July. Also on the agenda will be the consideration of opportunities for reinvigorating town centre activity and prosperity driven by a new or enhanced market and the independent shopping offer. That discussion will include the potential for protecting shopping frontages, making the best use of vacant and empty space, providing business support to small and start up retailers, growing the weekly market and promoting specialist touring markets. Given the focus on shopping and business the Town Team is keen to hear the views and opinions of town centre traders. A warm welcome is extended to the business community to attend this particular meeting and join the team to bring wider investment and coordinate joint activity to build a stronger, thriving town centre for Shepshed.

CFR UPDATE The Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responder Scheme is now going well with 13 volunteer responders active in our community. There are also 14 new volunteers awaiting training. Once trained, these volunteers will supplement those already responding and enable us to set up another team in Loughborough. This will increase the amount of time volunteers are on call and provide cover over a wider area. The new volunteers will require uniform and protective clothing at a cost of £120 per person. It will be necessary to buy another defibrillator and bespoke kit

bag to equip the new team when their training is complete. The defibrillator will cost £650 and the kit bag £150. The volunteers are currently fund raising to buy this equipment and will conduct a bucket shake at Tesco Express on Charnwood Road Shepshed on Sunday 13th June and at Tesco, The Rushes, Loughborough on Saturday 19th July 2014. If you are interested in becoming a Community First Responder or sponsoring the purchase of the equipment required to expand the scheme, or just make a donation please contact Lion President Bob Lilley on 01509 508265 or 07585772902 or by e-mail at thelilleys15@gmail.com.

made to clear the gutters of weeds which are also growing up through the drains which prevents the water from flowing into them when we get heavy rain. This, of course, will only add to the already bad flooding that we endure.

On a more serious note the Borough and County Council cuts in funding are really beginning to have an effect on services such as the Volunteer Centre (although the town council has managed to maintain its current level of funding). The library has also been affected with reduced opening hours but has so far avoided closure but I suspect this will not be too long in coming.

The dog fouling in and around Shepshed is also still a problem – it is always the small minority of people who WILL NOT CLEAN UP AFTER THEIR PET. It is especially nasty on the parks and open spaces where children play as this is a health hazard and a child could become seriously ill from coming into contact with it.

I would also like to comment on the recent grass cutting in and around Shepshed it is an appalling mess with grass left spilling over into the gutters and large clumps lying around everywhere as they are only strimming it which makes the grass fly in all directions. This makes the area look very messy and untidy. No attempt has been

SHEPSHED LIONS CLUB 5TH ANNUAL CHARITY CARNIVAL Plans are well advanced for the Shepshed Lions Club 5th Annual Charity Carnival. The event will be held on Glenmore Park, Shepshed on Bank Holiday Monday 25th August 2014. The event promises to be bigger and better than last year when over 3000 people visited the event. The are two fantastic arena attractions to look out for, bouncy castles, a children’s maze, fairground, BBQ and tea tent, a fantastic selection of stalls and other attractions.

I

n my role as a Borough Councillor I am always on hand to try and resolve any concerns you may about services provided by Charnwood Borough Council. PLANNING I spoke at the planning committee in support of the application for Change of Use of the former printing works at 91 Charnwood Road to a children’s play centre (class D2). This is a much needed facility in Shepshed. I did ask at that meeting that adequate sign-age should be put in place to remind drivers that pedestrians would be walking from the rear car park down a very narrow drive to the entrance at the front of the building. This was agreed by the Committee. I was invited along with Cllr Jane Lennie the other West Ward Councillor to attend the official ‘Cutting of the first turf’ for the proposed new bungalow next to 20 Longcliffe Road. This was attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Charnwood. This has come about with the alterations of the S106 at the Britannia Street flats, which were starting to get derelict. I was instrumental in organising the discussions between the proposed new owner of the Britannia Street flats – now called Palace Gardens – and Charnwood Borough Council. Rather than having 5 of the 30 flats as social housing the new owners have given money to Charnwood to build a purpose built 2 bedroom

fully adapted bungalow. I feel that this is a win win situation; the Britannia Street flats have been improved and brought into use – to the inevitable benefit of local businesses. While Charnwood will now own an additional property to let out after completion at the end of 2014. Residents have contacted me regarding a 7 day Consultation on the approved planning application P/14/1223/2 for homes between Iveshead Road and Brick Kiln Lane. This is for a variation on the S106, In brief the current arrangement is for a provision of 30% of the dwellings as affordable housing. This equates to 21 affordable homes (15 rented, 6 shared ownership). The applicants is requesting that this arrangement is amended to 10 affordable units (8 rented and 2 shared ownership) this equates to 14% of the total. CHARNWOOD BOROUGH COUNCIL FULL COUNCIL MEETING At the recent meeting of the Full Council held on Monday 23rd June a number of issues were discussed one being the lack of dog bins/litter bins in Shepshed, this was raised by Cllr Poole, but this is something that all the Shepshed Borough Councillors have been trying to get improved. Dog waste, as long as it correctly wrapped can be place in a litter bin, we all feel that more bins are needed and some bins need to be better placed. I understand that

FIVE CHURCHES IN SHEPSHED AND OAKS IN CHARNWOOD RAISE MONEY FOR CHRISTIAN AID PHOTO: From left to right, David & Elaine Stevenson, Brenda Fox (standing), Lorraine Cutts & Yvonne Diamond. Five churches in Shepshed and Oaks in Charnwood recently joined forces to raise money for Christian Aid. Their activities during Christian Aid Week in May included a house-to-house collection, a cake stall on the market, a sponsored walk along Offa’s Dyke and a Saturday collection at ASDA supermarket. With the help of Gift Aid a grand total of £3,000 was raised. Organisers would like to thank everyone for their efforts and generosity in generating such a worthwhile sum in a worthy cause.

13

more money has been set aside for extra bins around Charnwood and I am sure we will all be asking for some of that to come to Shepshed. INDIVIDUAL ELECTORAL REGISTRATION Effective June 10th 2014, the Government introduced a revised application procedure for voters. Under the new system people registering to vote will need to provide identifying information, such as their dates of birth and national insurance numbers, and their applications will be verified before they are included on the electoral resister. Anybody unable to supply this information will have to provide an alternative form of evidence of their identity. This will help prevent fraud by enabling a check that everyone who is added to the electoral register is who they say they are, and should lead to greater trust in the legitimacy and fairness of elections. Most residents who are already registered will transfer across automatically to the new system, but some may need to provide additional information. Charnwood will be writing to all pre-existing registered voters during August 2014 to either let them know that they have transferred across and don’t need to do anything, or to clarify what further information they need to provide and how to submit it. HOUSING CAPITAL PROGRAMME A Report from Cabinet was submitted regarding the Housing Capital Programme asking for support to release money to improve the Riversdale Court project in Birstall. This will provide 29 one bedroom flats in

total including 8 new builds at a cost of £3,151,000. Currently this development consists of 25 units (of which 16 are bedsits). This will give the residents larger, self-contained flats with their own bathroom. The scheme will take 52 weeks to complete. I am working with Charnwood to improve flats in Shepshed but a considerable amount of money has already been spent on Council owned homes in Shepshed. MOTION ON NOTICE There was as a Motion on Notice, Improvements in the Economic Health of the Borough. Unfortunately before this could be discussed fully all the Labour Borough Councillors walked out of the Council Chamber and only those Councillors, Conservative, Lib/Dem and Independents stayed behind to debate this motion as Labour deemed it Political. I continue to hold a monthly surgery in the Town Council offices with other Shepshed Conservative Councillors from 1011am on the last Saturday of every month except December to enable Shepshed residents to discuss issues which may concern them.

UPDATE FROM YOUR LOCAL COUNCILLOR

COUNTY COUNCILLOR

CHRISTINE RADFORD T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com

A

s your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal, with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council.

the Town Council, Councillor Joan Tassell and ward Councillor Claire Poole were able to join me at the top table to answer questions raised by Shepshed residents. The major concerns centred around: 1. The ability of Iveshead Road to safely take the extra traffic volume generated by 103 properties. 2. Would the existing drainage/ sewage system cope, would the balancing pond be adequate?

PLANNING As County Councillor I called a public meeting on Friday 20th June at the Glenmore Centre, to enable residents who live in the vicinity of the proposed development to 62 Iveshead Road (62 Iveshead Road would be demolished to enable access to the land behind, to build 103 dwellings planning application number P/14/0777/2 refers), to come along and look at the large scale plans of the proposal and to discuss their views and concerns. I am pleased that the Chairman of

3. The close proximity of Morley Quarry. It is a site of significant importance and would be a dangerous play area for the children who will move into these homes. I am pleased that County Highways initial view is to refuse approval on highway and sustainability grounds, no doubt the developer will be discussing these points with various departments at County and Charnwood to see if they can be overcome. I am mindful of the amount of developments being proposed

around Shepshed together with the proposed 3,500 houses on land known as Garendon between the M1 and Loughborough. Large developments such as the 3,500 have to be planned to include the supporting infrastructure. I am however very concerned about the smaller piece meal developments which collectively can have serious consequences to the infrastructure, lack of facilities, such as shops, doctors, school places. Primary schools will shortly be returning to 11+ from the current 10+ system, that is why together with the additional housing I have formally requested land be set aside for another Primary School before all the available land is taken up by housing. The Highways Authority based in County and the Highways Agency have been asked to do an in depth study of the road network around Shepshed taking into account all these proposed developments whether they be small or large. BRADGATE PARK I am a trustee of Bradgate Park and had the pleasure of being invited to attend the launch of the fund raising event by Leicester Lions to extend the visitors centre. The event was opened by Sir David Attenborough who is a Leicester lad and reminisced about his escapades in the Park which

made us all smile. The wisdom of securing a celebrity to open the event, got the fund raising off to a flying start. The event was featured on BBC TV evening news.

PUBLIC SEATING I am pleased that I was able to get permission to site a seat at the top of Charnwood Road with its junction with Ashby Road to mark my first term in office as County Councillor, I felt that this area of Shepshed was not well served with public seating. My first seat was to mark my year as Chairman of the Town Council and this is situated next to the play area on the Oakley Road playing fields. I hold a monthly surgery at the Council Offices in Shepshed between 10-11am on the last Saturday of every month (except December). To enable Shepshed residents to visit me personally.

MAYOR BREAKS GROUND ON NEW COUNCIL-OWNED BUNGALOW IN SHEPSHED

A brand new bungalow is being built in Shepshed to create a vital home for disabled residents. Councillor Paul Day, the Mayor of Charnwood, today (June 18th) helped mark the official start of building work during a ceremony at the site located behind 20 Longcliffe Road, Shepshed. The specially adapted bungalow is the first new Council-built property since 2011. Charnwood Borough Council has commissioned Corby-based builder Jeakins Weir to carry out the work and design the special features of the 900 square foot bungalow. The bungalow will have two bedrooms and has been designed to strict DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) standards.

Special features include a secure electric scooter store with charging facility and a DDA compliant kitchen and door widths. The bathroom has a wet area and the design also takes into account future loading on the trusses for the installation of a hoist. The tarmac paving surrounding the property is perfect for the easy movement of a wheelchair or scooter. French windows in the lounge also provide direct access to the garden area. It is expected the bungalow will be ready in October 2014. Councillor Day said “Providing homes for our residents, especially people who are elderly or vulnerable, is vitally important. I’m delighted that we have been able to

work with Jeakins Weir to build a new property and put a brand new roof over somebody’s head.” Councillor Jane Hunt, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, said “As a council, we are committed to helping provide homes to all of our residents. This new building, our first in three years, is an important one as we hope it will give someone a new lease and quality of life in an environment which is specially tailored to their needs.” Alistair Weir, Managing Director of Jeakins Weir, also said “Today marks the beginning of a five month building project. We are delighted to have been awarded this building contract and to be involved in such a progressive and significant design.”

NICKY MORGAN T: 01509 262723 E: nicky.morgan.mp@parliament.uk

I

would like to start this month’s column by offering hearty congratulations to everyone involved with organising this year’s Shepshed Show. It seems a long time ago since the launch event at Shepshed High School in February and the committee had clearly been very busy. I know that organising an event such as the Shepshed Show takes a huge amount of very hard work over many months. But it was well worth all the effort the sun was shining and there was an impressive variety of stalls and activities. I enjoyed some delicious cupcakes and had a go at mixing my own smoothie via bicycle power (!) at the Charnwood ASB stand. I also enjoyed learning how to play bowls at the Shepshed Bowls Club stand needless to say I do not have a natural talent for bowls! Above all it was brilliant to see so many people on their way to the Show from across the town. It was clear that people of all ages and indeed whole families were visiting and taking part in what the Show had to offer. The next challenge is how the organisers of the 2015 Show are going to beat this year’s tremendous event. Earlier this month I was very pleased to visit, with Cllr Christine Radford. Acorn Close Care Home. The Home provides accommodation for up to 23 people whose needs are associated with mental health together with a provision for clients with learning disabilities. There was a positive and happy atmosphere and it was good to meet residents and staff and to hear about all the activities everyone is involved with.

office is available to help schools organise their tours. In particular there is an excellent education service available at Westminster and the staff there take real pride in making Parliament accessible to pupils the visit often includes a mock election. If any of the schools in Shepshed would like to take advantage of this in the next school year then please do get in touch. National Carers Week is held every June. There are almost 7 million carers in the UK and this number is rising 42% are men and 58% are women. In Leicestershire our local GP clinical commissioning groups encouraged parents and teachers not to let young carers go unsupported and to help them look after their own health. A young carer is defined as someone aged 18 or under who helps look after a relative who has a condition such as a disability, illness, mental health condition or a drug or alcohol problem. I know from my casework that there are many people who do not consider themselves to be carers and yet they are definitely performing that role. So, in addition, local GPs are encouraging young carers, in particular, not to care in silence and isolation but to seek support if they care for a relative and haven’t told anyone officially. There is support locally and it may be a welcome relief to share the burden for a while and to be able to chat to those in a similar position. Further support is available at www.supportforcarers.org

NICKY MORGAN WELCOMES NEW CASH FOR POTHOLES IN LOUGHBOROUGH Local MP Nicky Morgan has welcomed the announcement of £2,639,172 of new funding in Leicestershire to tackle potholes. In total £4,131,149 of additional funding for Leicestershire has been announced for this year, on top of the annual roads maintenance budget.

NICKY MORGAN MP URGES CONSTITUENTS TO GET SCREENED FOR CERVICAL CANCER Loughborough MP Nicky Morgan has been calling on constituents to get themselves screened for cervical cancer. The call comes as part of Cervical Screening Awareness Week (CSAW) which took place earlier this month. In Leicestershire and Rutland, in 2012/13, 165,000 women were eligible for free screenings on the NHS, yet only 39,000 took up the offer. Nicky is encouraging more

NICKY MORGAN MP HUNDREDS OF NEW PEOPLE ON THE HOUSING LADDER IN LOUGHBOROUGH Local MP Nicky Morgan has welcomed newly-released figures which show that more people in Loughborough are getting onto the housing ladder thanks to the increase in affordable new homes and the Help to Buy scheme. In Charnwood, 920 new affordable homes have been delivered since 2010 and 103 people have been able to buy their own home thanks to Help to Buy, giving more families the opportunity to move into a good quality, affordable home and plan for their future.

Over three million potholes will be filled in across England with funding from the £168 million Pothole Fund, announced in the 2014 Budget. This is part of more than £24 billion which will be spent on England’s roads between 2010 and 2021 – the biggest investment in our roads since the 1970s. Nicky commented “This is great news for everybody who uses the roads in Loughborough. £2,639,172 of new funding will go a long way to dealing with the menace of potholes and ridding them from our roads.” women to get themselves screened, particularly those aged between 25 – 29 and 60 – 64, as they are more likely to be diagnosed with cervical cancer. The NHS Cervical Screening Programme (CSP) screens 3 million women every year, and it thought to save up to 4,500 lives annually in England alone. Nicky commented “Cervical cancer is a truly devastating disease, but we know that lives are saved if women take up the offer of a free screening. I would encourage all women who are invited be screened to take up this offer so we can help save even more lives. Nearly 200,000 new affordable homes have now been delivered across the country since 2010 while Help to Buy has enabled over 27,000 people to buy their own home. Nicky said “I know from the letters and emails I receive that many constituents are desperate to get onto the first rung of the housing ladder. Many of them have grown up in Loughborough or the surrounding villages and they want to stay here. It is their home, but many can’t afford to live here. Help to Buy is changing that, and it is particularly welcome news that 103 people locally have been helped onto the housing ladder. I was also pleased to hear that since 2010, hundreds of new affordable homes have been built here, meaning many more people can afford to live in Loughborough and the surrounding areas.”

Thickened toe nails are often caused by increased pressure on the nail, and can be an occupational hazard for footballers, dancers and anyone wearing heavy duty footwear. Trauma to the nail, fungal infection and conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease, poor circulation and diabetes may also be contributory factors, although often it just part of the normal aging process. Discomfort and pain due to increased pressure on the nail bed can be a significant problem, as can embarrassment about how the nails looks contributing to low self esteem for some people. Nails can become white, yellow, red or black in colour. A red or black nail may have dried blood underneath the nail plate due

WHAT DOES YOUR OPTICIAN SEE IN YOUR EYES? Submitted by Bonita Irish Retinal photography and its uses During an eye examination, an Optometrist (Ophthalmic Optician) routinely studies the interior of your eye, looking for any sign of abnormalities. We are able to actually photograph the interior of your eyes (specifically the retina), meaning that we can study your eyes in far more detail. By keeping photographic records of your retina, we are also able to compare images year on year, which is extremely useful. We call this procedure retinal screening and it enables us to check for Glaucoma, Diabetes, Cataract, Age related macular degeneration (AMD) and other ailments that affect literally hundreds of thousands of people in the UK. KIDS ZONE

SPORTS DAY ! The weather had been sunny for the last few weeks so Daniel and his friends had decided to organise a small picnic and sports day at one of their favourite parks. Christie was bringing some sandwiches and muffins, Bethany was flying in with some fresh lemonade for them and Daniel had packed a bag full of bits and bobs for the races, but he wouldn’t tell anyone what the races were! On the day of the picnic the friends met up in the park and Daniel started unpacking the bag… “Here we go” said Daniel as he started to remove the items one by one… “Three small bags half full of rice? What are we supposed to do with those?” said Bethany. Daniel carried on… “Old clothes?” said Christie, it looks like you forgot to take that bag to the charity shop! Daniel didn’t say a word but kept unpacking… “You packed Welly’s Daniel?” said Bethany, “But it’s not going to rain today and you haven’t even packed enough for all of us!” “I’m not sure about this sports day?” said Christie, you’ve packed some very odd items Daniel! Daniel started laughing! “You need to use your imagination a bit more, these items are perfect for our races!”

Last Months Competition Winners Well done to James Pett, age 2 winning the kids competition and Barry Partridge winning the adults competition. Your prizes are on their way!

Daniel started to put the clothes down on the ground, first three big pairs of socks in a row, a few meters later, three baggy t-shirts and a few meters after that three of Bethany’s old hats! “All you have to do is start at the socks, when I shout ‘go’ we put the socks on, run or fly to the t-shirt, put that on quickly then run or fly to the hat, put that on and then on to the finish line!” said Daniel. “Oh that sounds like fun” shouted Christie, let’s do that first. So the friends lined up and Daniel shouted “go!” they rushed putting their socks on, Christie was in such a rush she didn’t pull them up properly and tripped over on her way to the T-shirts, Daniel got his T-shirt on but backwards and they all rushed on to the hat’s laughing as they went! Bethany grabbed her hat and put it on, but it slipped over her eyes and she started flying the wrong way! Eventually they all crossed the finish line and were rolling around on the floor laughing at Bethany who had flown in circles trying to see out from under her hat! They carried on doing more competations, Welly Wanging with the three wellies and a race balancing the rice bags on their heads! After the competitions they all sat down for the picnic and decided that they had all done as well as each other. Playing with your friends is fun and you can use almost any items to design your own races! Why don’t you have a go?

A man walks into a doctor’s office. He has a cucumber up his nose, a carrot in his left ear and a banana in his right ear. “What’s the matter with me?” he asks the doctor. The doctor replies, “You’re not eating properly.” Q: Did you hear about the fight in the biscuit tin? A: The bandit hit the penguin over the head with a club, tied him to a wagon wheel with a blue ribbon and made his breakaway in a taxi! 2 bags of crisps are walking done the road, a policeman pulls up beside them and asks “do you want a lift?”, they both reply “sorry mate, were walkers!!”

QUICK CRAFT

Tell you a tale of Leicestershire, the county where I live. And of the myriad delights that fair shire has to give.

PORTOBELLO MUSHROOMS

The lush green of her rolling hills. Sleepy hamlets of red brick.

Need cheering up? Then Leicestershire will surely do the trick. From Charnwood Forest’s rocky heights the view is panoramic. The fresh, green growth in springtime, it really is dynamic.

Just take a walk in Bradgate Park. History’s all around you.

My home county’s turbulent past. It really will astound you. Go see Bosworth battlefield where King Richard lost his life.

YOU WILL NEED:

• Fresh, whole white or Portobello mushrooms • White paper • Drinking glass • Non-aerosol hair spray

Offered his kingdom for a horse in the midst of all that strife. Visit Melton Mowbray. I really think you oughter.

Stilton cheese and crisp pork pies. Your mouth is sure to water.

HOW YOU DO IT:

1. To make spore prints, carefully remove the stems from the mushrooms. Expose the gills by using a knife (a parent’s job) to trim back the lower edges of the caps. 2. Place the mushrooms on a sheet of paper and cover each one with an inverted glass. Let stand overnight. The mushrooms will release spores from their caps to create distinctive patterns. 3. Carefully lift first the glasses, then the mushrooms, to reveal the spore prints. If you are careful not to smudge them you can try adding faces to make some mushroom people! 4. To preserve the designs, coat with non-aerosol hair spray.

Look east from top of Beacon Hill on a beautiful summer’s day.

That silvery thread is the River Soar meandering her leisurely way.

Hear the chimes of the Loughborough carillon, borne on a gentle breeze. Explore the new National Forest. They are planting millions of trees. Down in the south of the county, Foxton locks is wonderful sight. A staircase of ten mighty lock gates, all in a single flight. So come on and visit my county. It will not disappoint.

INGREDIENTS • 100g softened butter • 100g caster sugar • 1 egg • Drop of vanilla essence • 225g plain flour • 3-4 tbsp of jam / curd METHOD Cream butter and sugar together. Add the egg and vanilla before mixing until smooth. Combine the flour to form a smooth dough. If the dough is too sticky add a little more flour. Wrap the dough in cling film. Chill for 1hr.

Heat oven to 180 degrees. Roll out the chilled dough, on a floured surface, until it is about 5mm thick. Using a cookie cutter cut out about 40 biscuit shapes. Cut out a small hole in half of the biscuit shapes. Place the shapes on lined baking trays and bake for 10-15 mins, or until golden brown, then remove and leave to cool on a wire rack. Take a pair of biscuits and put ½ tsp of jam on the whole biscuit, the place the holey biscuit on top. Enjoy!
