NEW PLAY EQUIPMENT NOW COMPLETE Shepshed Town Council has funded this equipment to the total cost of £22,313.62. The equipment was provided and installed by Wicksteed Playgrounds. This project appears to have been well received by local residents, especially those with younger children/ grandchildren. The Town Council frequently receives requests for new play equipment and, therefore, considers each request on it’s own merits and then forwarded to the Projects Subcommittee for consideration. Other play areas under the ownership of Shepshed Town Council are also currently being considered for improvement. The Town Council hopes that the equipment will be treated with care and respect and that residents will report any signs of malicious behaviour towards this equipment, or any other site, to the Police using the 101number. At the end of the day, this play equipment is funded out of ratepayers money.
SHEPSHED RAMBLERS Shepshed Ramblers will meet in Shepshed Market Place at 09.25 on 19 July 2015 for a prompt 09.30 departure for its ‘Pack Up for Packington’ walk. Walkers carry a coffee break and packed lunch. If anyone requires further information, please contact Margaret on 01509 600540 or Bernie on 01509 828328. A warm welcome to all is guaranteed.

I
have thoroughly enjoyed seeing so many Shepshed folk in the last month at various events. My first visit was to the Shepshed Bowls Club on a gloriously sunny Sunday to officially open their newly extended and revamped club house. I was delighted to support Nigel and the Club last year in their bids to secure funds for the new facilities.
and organisations taking part, the fantastic bike display and entertainments and the real sense of community. Many congratulations to the organisers of both events – I know they don’t happen without a lot of hard work behind the scenes.
The progress the members of the Club have made in not only fundraising but then getting everything sorted is truly remarkable. It was lovely to see the finished club house and to meet members and those involved in the project. My son also had a great time practising his bowls skills! Thank you to everyone for making us so welcome.
Locally I have been working with Leicestershire Promotions for some time now to support their plans for a Children’s Illustrated Literature Festival in Loughborough. This will also coincide with the centenary anniversary of the founding of Ladybird Books. I have been delighted to host several dinners in the House of Commons to bring relevant publishers and journalists together to discuss the plans for a festival.
A few days later I was delighted to visit Shepshed-based businessman Andy Coughlan to hear about his involvement in Setel Powerline Limited, the winner of a 2015 Sea Trade Award for Innovation. Andy has been a keen supporter of the Shepshed Business Forum. On the subject of Shepshed businesses I was very pleased to hear about the recent meeting of Town Centre businesses and my office will do all we can to support this group. I do believe it is very important that Shepshed’s businesses work together and have a common voice on matters affecting the town.
The good news is that the first Loogabarooga Children’s Illustrated Literature Festival will be held between 22nd and 26th October 2015 across Loughborough. This festival is unique in focusing on illustrated literature. It provides a platform to show just how important reading is and how much we can all enjoy books together as a family. I am sure we all remember our favourite children’s books – and I bet we remember the pictures as much as the stories! I am really excited that Loughborough will be hosting this festival which I am sure will attract both national and international attention.
June is always a busy month for fetes and fairs. I was very pleased to be invited to St Botolph Primary’s summer fete and although the weather was a bit wet I don’t think that mattered too much for those members of staff who ended up having wet sponges thrown at them…! The stocks were out again for the Shepshed Show. Although the weather was not at all seasonal it was still great to see so many local businesses
Finally as regular readers will know Cllr Christine Radford and I have been collecting signatures on a petition calling for a bus service between Shepshed and East Midlands Airport. We met a representative from the Airport in March to discuss this. I am pleased to say that the Airport has confirmed in its latest Sustainable Development Plan that this is something they would like to develop. We will continue to work on this.
Are held on the second Saturday of each month at Shepshed Town Council offices in Charnwood Road from 11am until 12 noon. Labour Councillors would love to meet you and help you deal with any issues that you may have. All Shepshed residents are welcome. If you unable to come along please telephone 01509 277012 and we will do our best to help.
Shepshed Conservatives Councillors hold an advice surgery at the Shepshed Town Council Offices, Charnwood Road, Shepshed on the last Saturday of the month. 10am to 11am. Your Conservative, County, Borough and Town Councillors would love to meet you and help you deal with any issues that you may have. All Shepshed residents are welcome. Appointments are not necessary for more details call 01509 502974

£2500 RAISED FOR CHRISTIAN AID

£2500 was raised for Christian Aid by participating churches in Shepshed and Oaks in Charnwood during Christian Aid Week in May. In addition £218 will be forthcoming by Gift Aid.
and gruesome wounds were discovered in the Kings skull that could only have been enforced with such evil venom after death.
A very well attended Shepshed History society meeting held on June 9th enjoyed listening to a talk given by Mr Peter Liddle on the subject of the death and burial of Richard 3rd of which he played a large part in discovering.
In depth ancient maps of Leicestershire were shown and Peter explained the journey the Kings body would have taken on its way to Grey Friars and its subsequent burial.
Peter began the evening by explaining how the mistaken location of the Battle of Bosworth came about and what the authorities did to uncover the truth of where the actual battle took place. Amateur metal detectors enthusiasts also played a large part in helping the experts unearth vital evidence in the form of unearthing ancient weapons and so slowly the overall true picture of the momentous battle began to emerge and make sense.
So continuing then with his lecture Peter moved to the modern day and explained how they discovered the Kings body in a run of the mill car park and how they went onto with the help of a special kind of D.N.A. To ascertain that the deformed skeleton they had discovered was in fact Richard the 3rd. A spell binding evening that had everyone mesmerised as they came to learn the true facts of our history which up to now had only been hearsay and much of it not true.
Continuing to describe the horrific death of the doomed King, it would appear that he was so hated by the enemy that the rebellious opposition savagely attacked the poor King as he lay slain on the floor, for eight massive
The July meeting will be given by Mr Bob Neil, always a popular presenter who will bring quirky antique articles for members to guess what they are and new members and guests are always welcome.
This is an excellent effort when public generosity is being stretched by many demands. Our thanks are due to everyone who collected, donated and baked cakes in a worthwhile cause to help some of the world’s poorest people.
CYCLE RIDE FROM SHEPSHED TO SKEGNESS IN AID OF LOROS On the 6th of June, 9 local men (Richard Kitchener, Andy Akmentins, Paul Simons, Mark Brierley, Andy Grimley, Stephen Smurthwaite, Gary Whiles, Andy Orton & Paul Shaw) cycled from Shepshed to Skegness in aid of the charity LOROS. This was done in memory of Alan Spendlove who died aged 54 from mesothelioma and spent his final few weeks being cared for in LOROS. Alan was local to Shepshed, ran a fencing/landscaping business and was well known and liked in the Shepshed area. Between them they have raised over £4500. They would like to thank all the people who donated money together with Campbell Scientific Ltd of Shepshed who gave a substantial money donation. Further thanks go to Mick Sloan who organised donations of bottled water from Kater4, bananas from Websters Grocers in Shepshed and printed T.Shirts from Primo IT. Also thanks to Steve of Steve Ellis House Clearance Services for following in his van as back up and for bringing the cycles home on the Sunday and to The Crown Public House in Shepshed for providing a celebratory buffet upon their return.
ELAINE & DAVID STEVENSON CELEBRATE THEIR GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY Shepshed couple Elaine & David Stevenson recently celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary. An informal reception at the Glenmore Centre was attended by more than 150 people on the afternoon of Sunday 31st May. Photos of their wedding 50 years ago were mainly in black and white, and Elaine wanted a colour image which would do justice to her dress. By kind permission of Rev’d Canon Cynthia Hebden it was agreed that photographs could be taken in St Botolph’s Church. The problem was to find someone who could fit into a 1960s shape! The dilemma was solved by their young friend Aimée Ainsworth who at the age of 13 was able to squeeze into narrow taper sleeves and a 19” waist.

CHARITY CARNIVAL BANK HOLIDAY MONDAY 31st AUGUST GLENMORE PARK Before its disappearance in the 1990s, the annual carnival was the most important event of the summer in Shepshed. It brought us all together for a celebration of our village, our culture and our community and created treasured memories for all of us who grew up in the village. So, in 2010, the Shepshed Lions Club decided to resurrect this most important of traditions and organised the first Shepshed Charity Carnival, so that current and future generations had the opportunity to get together and make their own memories whilst raising money to support local causes and those in most need within our local community. The annual event has grown rapidly over the last six years. It is now the signature event of Shepshed’s summer, attracting in excess of three thousand people each year. The carnival is a 'not for profit' community charity event in the village and is organised and delivered by the volunteers of the Shepshed Lions Club, with all proceeds going back into our community. To date, the carnival has raised over £20,000 for great local causes. We encourage everyone in our community to get involved however they can, whether it be simply attending on the day, volunteering time to help with organisation or by sponsoring the event. If you would like to get involved, please get in touch. Bob and Sue Lilley 01509 508265 www.shepshedcarnival.org The carnival this year will provide a day of fun, excitement, learning and celebration on an unprecedented scale, with over sixty stalls, 25 incredible attractions and an arena show that will entertain the entire family. Proud to be the Main sponsor of the Shepshed Lions Charity Carnival 2015

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace
the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer
requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Shepshed & the surrounding area and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I
get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

T
hat was the question posed in the February edition about the 1944 Souvenir issued by The Anstey War Service League and it evoked numerous responses from Anstey’s senior citizens.
Sylvia Wain tells us that her father Lenard, the founder of the Suburban Press in Albion Road, put forward this idea to the League and with their grateful approval generously produced, at his own cost and using his rationed paper allocation, a copy for every one of the 500 on active service plus a further 600 copies to be sold to raise funds for the League. A copy from Sylvia that had been donated to The Anstey Millennium Collection is shown herewith signed by the committee - President - Herbert Booth, Chairman - J. A. Bramley, Hon. Sec. J. P. Willett, Ass’t Sec. Arch Bosworth, Treasurer J. A. Crooks and Editor J. W. Wakefield. Janet Elverstone who initiated the article in February with her uncle Arch Barker’s copy of the souvenir has prompted Brian Kibble to come up with a photograph from the Millennium Collection - courtesy of William Palmer of Thurcaston - showing Arch receiving in 1952 his 25 year service award at Bosworth & Wright’s box factory from Arch Bosworth (wartime League assistant secretary).
Elaine Casey phoned in to say that the Betty Thurman referred to was her aunty and that she would have been 12years old at the Latimer St. School when her letter to those on service was selected as the best for publication. 90 year old ex Serviceman Derek Ross who served in the Fleet Air Arm has also responded saying that he has still got a copy of the souvenir in mint condition together with several other League newsletters that had been enclosed with gift postal orders ranging from five shillings to £1 in value. One of the stories in the newsletters referred to the sight of a very long RAF tender having difficulty negotiating The Nook roundabout and a further incident of a tracked Bren gun carrier crashing into the Plough Inn on Bradgate Road - 80 year old Brian Kibble remembers that same RAF tender was driven by Anstey serviceman Harry Allen who parked it a while next to Palmers shoe factory carrying a shot-up German plane causing quite a stir of interest in the village. Brian also remembers the Bren gun carriers who were based on the Bradgate
Park and often came down to the Nook for refreshment in the Cosy Café (today’s Nationwide).

STANDING OVATION FOR ‘SERENADE’ AT THEIR ‘MUSIC AND MEMORIES’ CONCERTS

The Shepshed Womens’ Choir “Serenade”, led by Musical Director Tom Stanyard, brought the audience to their feet at their two “Music and Memories” Spring Concerts. The concerts, at Thorpe Acre Church on 1st June and at Shepshed High School on 13th June contained a mix of songs and styles, which were suggested by the ladies of the choir, for the special memories that they held for them – hence the title of the concert. Both events were well attended and received a standing ovation with shouts of “more”. One member of the choir said “Tom has been encouraging us to challenge ourselves by introducing more complicated harmonies. We have also had more small group pieces, which have proved to be very rewarding. It’s great that the dedication the ladies have shown has been rewarded by such a fantastic audience reaction”. Hot on the heels of the concert tour was the Shepshed Show on Saturday 15th June. Although the ladies did not perform this year, they manned a charity stall which, thanks to the generous public, raised over £100.00. The proceeds from the concert at Shepshed High School and the charity stall, will go to the choirs chosen charity; The Peter Le Marchant Trust. For over thirty five years the Trust has provided day outings and holidays on waterways for people of all ages with any kind of disability or serious illness. More information can be found on their website www.peterlemarchanttrust.co.uk.

Following the concerts the ladies will be taking a well-earned summer break, but if you have
been to the concerts and feel that you would like to join, or if you simply feel like singing, the choir will be regrouping in September. They meet at Shepshed High School at 7.30pm on any Monday evening during term time, so feel free to pop along and see if it’s for you. The format is very simple, you come along and sing (with a cuppa, a biscuit and a chat at the break) and make friends. The choir is a very sociable bunch of around 70 ladies, of varying ages, who have links to Shepshed. There is no need to audition and if performing in public isn’t your thing, that’s fine, there is no pressure to perform in any of the performances. On the other hand, if you want to unleash your inner diva, there is plenty of opportunity to do so! The choir has been running for 3 years and during that time they have raised thousands of pounds for a number of charities. This has been through various fundraising activities and performances. Since ‘Serenade’ started, they have performed at the Shepshed Show, at local churches in their own Christmas Concerts (often accompanied by Loughborough Concert Band and local school children), toured local nursing homes and even sung Christmas Carols at local hostelries, to name but a few. You can find more information about the choir on their website: www.serenadeshepshed.co.uk Alternatively, if you have any questions you can contact Keleigh Atkin on 07775 558219 or email ‘Serenade’ at serenadeshepshed@ rocketmail.com.

WINDOW DRESSING
Fabrics To Bring Out Your Inner Artist
In past years digitally printed fabrics were quite a niche market and not so widely available. With this process you can print an image direct onto the fabric to create a colourful and unique design. These days the choice is endless and one of my current favourites is a collection of fabrics from Prestigious Textiles call Iona. Available in 7 designs, and mainly printed onto soft chenille which is suitable for all kinds of soft furnishings, it also includes two fabrics specifically designed for upholstery.
An artists palette of colour is used in soft brushstrokes to recreate bold, bright blooms and subtle washed out petals and leaves, alongside weaves with strong accent colours which are perfect for accessories such as throws and cushions. To view this range and many other fabrics for all your soft furnishing needs, please contact Acacia Curtains & Blinds on 01509 821016 Contact Caroline Thompson Telephone 01509 821016 Mobile 0795 1619046

Creating A ‘Tropical’ Garden
W
ell summer is here and thankfully we can wave good bye to the cold mornings we have suffered in the spring and say hello to long sunny days. Things seem a little late this year but with some good sunshine they will soon catch up.
Bamboo
As I spend more time out basking in the rays my mind turns to holidays in warmer more exotic climes. It can be so tempting to return to our cooler gardens and long for the plants and colours we have seen abroad. Despite our less clement weather it is possible to create a tropical look using hardy and half hardy plants with the odd flamboyant annual thrown in too. Select from a range of lush foliage plants and tropical looking flowers to transform a space into a bright, fresh & invigorating space.
Phormium
Tropical foliage Bamboo – a classic for an exotic garden, the foliage looks and sounds great when caught by the breeze. Choose varieties that are well behaved and true clump formers like Fargesia robusta. They can be grown in large containers if they are kept moist. Bananas – hardy varieties (through most winters) include Musa basjoo with huge paddle shaped green leaves on long sturdy stems and Musa sikkimensis which has bronze markings on the young leaves and trunk. Both will reach approx. Height of 3-4m (10-13ft) .
Hemerocallis
STBC CELEBRATES OPENING The official opening of Shepshed Town Bowls Club’s newly extended and refurbished club house took place on Sunday 7 June. Club members and many invited guests representing funders, contractors and sponsors enjoyed refreshments on the patio whilst watching a light hearted exhibition game played out on the green. In her address Carol Burton, Club President welcomed all to the celebration of the conclusion
Fatsia – with huge evergreen glossy palm like leaves this is a popular shrub. It can get quite large and benefits from being in a sheltered spot to avoid frost damage to leaves in spring. Phormium & Cordylines – strong statement plants both of these produce strappy evergreen leaves in a variety of colours. They are suitable for pots or borders and heights vary with variety. Note that only the green form of Cordyline is truly hardy, the red and striped forms need some winter protection. Palms – hardy forms like Trachycarpus fortunei can be an expensive investment but as they are such great statement plants you only need one to transport you to the tropics! Exotic looking flowers Dahlias Well with such a huge range of colours and forms and great exoticlooking foliage these are a must for a tropical style garden. Try cactus types for their zany pointed petals. Reds, oranges and yellows with dark foliage will give a wow factor.
Climbers – Passion flowers like Passiflora caerulea or ‘Constant Elliot’ are hardy in this area and produce exotic-looking blooms in blue/white. Campsis bear exotic clusters of pale yellow-orange trumpet-shaped flowers perfect for warm pergola or wall.
Hemerocallis – the Day lily come in a huge range of colours and heights. ‘Stella d’Oro’ is rightly popular for its bright yellow blooms in summer. ‘Pardon Me’ is a rich wine red variety great for hotting up a border.
Talking of climbers, there are so many available in garden centres and nurseries it’s sometimes hard to decide which to choose, so next month I’ll be looking at the best for walls, fences, arches and pergolas. If you fancy an exotic looking garden and need some further help, get in touch.
Cannas – tender and needing a little care in winter, these amazing lilies have bold foliage topped with stunning brightly coloured

The Rt Hon Nicky Morgan, Loughborough’s MP, was then asked to cut the ceremonial ribbon. She commended the club on all the effort that had obviously taken place. The fantastic new facilities would not only benefit members and visitors but also the wider Shepshed Community. John Harrison, from Sport England, said "It is great to see a successfully completed project at first hand. Shepshed Town Bowls
Gingers - Hedychium coccineum the Scarlet Gingerlily, is a robust tall-growing hardy Ginger from the Himalayas. It produces startlingly beautiful flowers in late summer. These prefer a warm sheltered spot and all the water and feed that you can give them. Begonias – popular bedding plants for hanging baskets and containers they can also look fantastic in containers in an exotic style garden. Group them with grasses and ferns in containers for a lush look. Begonia rex are grown for their striking foliage and are perfect for shady spots.

of many months of hard work and disruption. She particularly thanked the funders of the project and all the club members who had contributed in any way.
flowers throughout summer. Happy in sun or shade and all manner of soils, these are very adaptable plants.
Club have certainly made the most of our £50,000 grant, as well as contributions from others and a significant financial input from themselves. The finished work will certainly improve the experience of club members and visiting players, and will ensure that the wider community can play sport more often." For more information on how to join this friendly club or to try out the sport of bowls visit our web site at: www.shepshedtownbowls.co.uk We also welcome anyone who would just like to view our fantastic new facilities which can be hired.
