WELCOME TO YOUR JUNE COMMUNITY EYE MAGAZINE It’s hard to believe spring is here as it seems to have arrived very suddenly, however it’s very welcome and I’m enjoying seeing the Bluebells start to flower as they have to be my favourite flower of all. Maybe it’s because my mother was walking in the Bluebells in Loughborough’s Outwoods just before I was born. Bel has a lovely spring article and it’s certainly inspired me to go and visit my local garden centre and have a look at the amazing array of plants for to encourage wildlife into my garden. Once the garden is looking neat and beautiful it’s time to tackle the spring clean inside. This month we’ve some handy tips for getting your house sparkling clean without having to go out and buy expensive cleaning products. We also welcome some new advertisers to our
SHEPSHED AND DISTRICT CAMERA CLUB The members of Shepshed and District Camera Club had a busy April and May before going in to the annual summer break until September. They were overjoyed to win this years annual 3-way competition where each club supplied 16 prints to be judged by Steve Myall of Keyworth who awarded marks to each out of 20. In a really close finish Shepshed scored 262 with the Ashby club on 260 and the Coalville club on 259. A couple of weeks later the annual Audio/Visual challenge was held and congratulations went to Alan Harris for his winning sequence of 'Easter in Algarve', a joyous and colourful reminder of Spring and Summer with people dancing in the streets. Brian Walbey came second with his visual tour of the Peak District to the accompaniment of 'The Lord is my Shepherd,' and Sue Hutton, LRPS. came third with 'Memories of the Seaside.' The third league competition of the years was held in early May, judged by the very popular Terry Bickley, DPAGB, AFIAP, BPE3. The prints class result was: 1st. Garry Rennocks ‘(Concentration’) 2nd. Sue Hutton LRPS 3rd. Paul Rennocks Highly Commended: Alan Harris And the projected images result was: 1st. Alan Harris ‘The King Returns’ 2nd. Phil Tapp 3rd. ladies business networking group
GOES FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH It’s networking but not as you may know it! The Ladies Business Group (Now LoveLBG Limited) brings together local businesses owned, managed or represented by women LoveLBG supports, promotes and inspires the businesses involved. There are currently groups in Ashby, Alcester, Loughborough and Burton upon Trent with new venues Leicester and Sutton Coldfield launching this June, due to increased demand. Networking LoveLBG style offers a sociable, sharing and inclusive alternative to the hard sell format of traditional groups, encouraging business women to get away from the work place for just a short time (no crack of dawn starts with breakfast meetings for busy working mums!) and meet likeminded ladies from the local area to share experiences and promote their businesses. Founder Sue Crooks explains what led her to set up the group in Ashby de la Zouch in April 2012 "People buy from people. Women are particularly good at making strong connections that often turn into friendships. For the ladies in our networking groups, it's not just about the event on the day - we believe in ongoing support and promotion, with reduced price professional training, relevant and topical workshops to boost members’ knowledge and tips and skills to build confidence and cement relationships.” According to Sue, part of the group’s success is its less formal structure which many people find far more comfortable than the goal setting, referrals and pressure of other networking groups. "Refreshingly, there are no long, dull speeches - instead, we meet, chat, exchange news, eat and share in a relaxed atmosphere with an interesting guest speaker at every lunch event bringing tips, advice and fresh perspectives to our members. The Ladies Business Group has grown incredibly quickly since its launch 3 years ago, which is why we need to rebrand and invest in the group’s future. New groups in Leicester and Sutton Coldfield are coming on board to join Loughborough, Ashby de la Zouch, Alcester near Stratford and Burton upon Trent so the time is right to do this.”
Passionate about the group, Sue drives it forward with energy, warmth and humour. She’s especially good at connecting people and businesses together and as Managing Director of SJC Marketing Limited in Ashby, she brings professional expertise in social media, marketing and communications to promote and support the group, whose members enjoy an active Facebook page, Twitter hashtag #lovelbg and their own presence on a dedicated website. Sue explains how it works “You can visit twice as a guest to see whether the group is for you - all it costs is the price of the lunch, although most people join as members beforehand to get a discount, it’s superb value! I don’t think any other networking group offers membership at less than £100.00 a year with the support we offer and members able to go to any area event they choose. Lunches take place in local, independent venues every month with regular coffee morning meet ups for members.” No sector is locked out. Every member has equal status, whether they are a home-based sole trader or a partner at a leading firm of solicitors – unlike some organisations, more than one member can represent the same business or product. Nothing like a little healthy competition! Guest speakers have included Nicky Morgan MP, who launched the Loughborough group in Spring 2014, Karen Williams, Networker of the Year (and also host of our Burton and Sutton Coldfield groups) and Maria Hanson MBE whose foundation helps people make the most of the time they have left together. Every event also supports a charity by either holding a raffle or having donations such as Easter Eggs for children in domestic violence support systems or unwanted bras for women and orphaned teenagers in Africa. Members can look forward to a summer of exciting events, a racing day and more inspirational talks and discounted workshops in Marketing, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Twitter, Facebook and Email Marketing – all designed to help members grow their own businesses. Come and find out what it’s all about! Contact Sue Crooks on 03330 116 449 or visit www.lovelbg.co.uk
UPDATE FROM GURU SINGH It is only three months left for my forthcoming challenge and my training has mostly gone well. In early May most of the riders in the challenge took part in a 70 mile training ride which was tough but enjoyable. It gave us slower riders plenty of opportunity to bond. There are two more difficult rides coming up in June. My weight loss regime has been very encouraging. I have lost 20 pounds so far and have another 8 to lose to reach my target. As my friend Paul says the pounds are rolling off and the £s are rolling in. My fund raising has gone past the £3000 level. All the money raised of course goes to Leicestershire’s own cancer charity Hope Against Cancer. Thanks to all those who have contributed so generously, particularly to Diane Portsmouth and her daughter Bec who have been holding raffles for Hope. Those who have been following my blog on www.gsingh1015. wordpress.com will know that I have secured sponsorship from Pedal Power in Loughborough who have supplied my Domane Trek bike. I am still seeking corporate and small business sponsorship from local businesses

My donations page is http:// uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/ Hopesitalianjob Sponsorship forms also at Charnwood Pharmacy, Ryatt’s Optometrists, Hall Croft opticians, Bloomin’ Marvellous, Black Swan, Dilip’s Multistore and the Crown in Market Place. Plans for starting a social cycling club in Shepshed are also progressing and many people have shown a lot of interest in joining up. The first ride planned is on Sunday June 14 starting at 9.30am from the Town Council offices on Charnwood Road. The emphasis is on going to be on fun. The motto is nobody gets left behind! I hope to make this event into a regular Sunday morning event, eventually with riders of differing abilities coming together.

QUILT TOGETHER 'I am a keen quilter and belong to a quilting group in Shepshed called 'Quilt Together'. I had an idea last year that we as a group should make a quilt to enter in a show or two. I found the idea in a book called 'Foolproof crazy quilting' by Jennifer Clouston and so we began to stitch! We started it in September 2014 and finished this January, well ahead of the time I thought it would take. We entered it in a show at Uttoxeter in April and were delighted with the judges comments, so we also entered it into a much bigger national show at Malvern this May and to our astonishment and delight were given a 'judges merit' rosette! We now plan to enter it in the biggest UK quilting show at the NEC in August - not because we think we can win anything, but because we want to sell the quilt to raise money for Canine Partners - a charity that trains dogs to assist people with disabilities. The quilt is made of hexagons which have been embellished
with all sorts of bits and pieces - buttons; beads; ribbons; lace and other 'trinkets'; then all stitched together by hand and finished with different coloured embroidery stitches. Making this quilt has been a great pleasure and a learning curve for us all, but it has also boosted the confidence of the group - most of whom thought they weren't good enough to enter into a competition! We named the quilt 'Are we mad? No, just crazy' - quilters are known for their sense of humour!'

THE NOTTINGHAM BUILDING SOCIETY’S ASSEMBLY
PHOTO: Branch staff Ria Cook (as Robin Hood) and Jade Hardy The Shepshed branch of the Nottingham Building Society (The Nottingham) have been educating local primary school children on the importance of money and saving. Pupils from St Botolphs in the town were delighted to welcome Robin Hood and his helper Jade Hardy into their school for an assembly of fun and facts. Karen Ashworth of St Botolphs primary school said “The assembly was great. The Robin Hood outfit grabbed the children’s attention and the information was pitched at just the right level.”
SHEPSHED TOWN BOWLS CLUB Shepshed Town Bowls Club will once again be represented at the Shepshed Show on Saturday 20th June. Please pop in and talk to one of our members if you want to find out more about playing bowls or how you can get involved in this friendly club. There will also be a chance to have a go at short mat bowling. On Sunday 28 June the club will be holding an open day at its premises on Charnwood Road, opposite Asda, between 10.00 and 4.00 for anyone, young or old, to try bowling on an actual green. Basic tuition and equipment will be provided but we do please ask that participants wear flat shoes. This will also be an opportunity for any member of the local community to come and view our fantastic new facilities following our recent project to extend and refurbish our club house.
SHEPSHED HISTORY SOCIETY The May meeting of the Shepshed History Society saw Mr. Stephen Flanders giving an enthralling and an amazing account of Catherine Cromptons diary. And it all began when he was given quite an unassuming diary by a friend which was over a hundred years old. At first glance though, it held nothing of any significance being just a mundane account of the lady’s life in general. However when Stephen began to examine it in depth he soon began to unearth the most amazing accounts of both her life and events that occurred in the second half of the 19th century, which led him on a quest to learn even more. He was soon to learn then that Catherine Crompton had been in fact married to George Crompton , managing director of the Stanton Iron works. Having worked her way up from the working class, she fin ally married this important man and went onto have 11 children, 4 of which sadly died quite young. They lived mainly in a prestigious part of London for many years. However brief comments in the diary like ‘I heard the explosion that has everyone talking’ led Stephen to investigate this noise which had resounded for a good 25 miles. And he found it referred to the well documented account of a river barge carrying tons of gun powder that had exploded when travelling under a very substantial bridge. The bridge was reduced
to rubble and had to be rebuilt from scratch which led to new laws being made about transportation of dangerous cargo. Another time she mentioned seeing the great fire that lit up the horizon, this Stephen found referred to the first pantechnicon to be built. This was the very first storage building to be erected that was made out of concrete and the owners vowed that it was fire proof. Here the aristocracy would store their precious valuables and antiques when going on the grand tour, as burglars had been known to target their empty homes and ransack them on a regular basis. However as many of the clients had secreted valuables in mattresses and chair cushions etc. to save on insurance they were unable to claim for them when the unthinkable happened and this fire proof building did actually catch fire. All these and many more intriguing tales of the diary were accompanied by fascinating slides of history of that time and members were enthralled as Stephen continued entertaining the society with non stop tales all of which were gleaned from this very run of the mill diary which on the surface to be of no consequence at all. Her life having had humble origins Catherine Crompton was to become an exceptionally wealthy widow, her sons following in the family business. The June meeting will be given by Mr Peter Liddle and the subject to be ‘The Life and Burial of Richard III. Guests and new members are welcome.
ST. WINEFRIDE’S CHURCH SUMMER FETE SATURDAY 4TH JULY 2015 Do please come along and join us for an afternoon of fun here in the Church Grounds, Charnwood Road, Shepshed between 2pm – 4pm. Meet old and new friends, browse our many varied stalls, and then join us in the Church Annex for tasty refreshments. We look forward to greeting you all.
LAST NIGHT OF THE PROMS CONCERT The Last Night of the Proms has become an established feature in the Shepshed Charnwood Rotary Club's calendar. This year's concert, held at St Andrew's Church in Kegworth, was again a superb evening of music and entertainment performed by the ever popular Hathern Band, conducted by David Newman. Audience participation was actively encouraged and with a great deal
of flag waving the evening sped by. Members of the Club, dressed in their finery, served refreshments at the interval to an appreciative gathering who were soon ready to hear more, and were certainly not "brassed off". The evening was a huge success and the money raised was split evenly between the Church and the ABF. This charity, started in 1944 as the Army Benevolent Fund, gives lifetime support to serving and retired soldiers and their families. The club is delighted to support both of these organisations and would like to thank all who attended and contributed to the evening.

A FEAST OF FILM AND STAGE MUSIC WITH THE LOUGHBOROUGH ORCHESTRA On Saturday June 20th 7.30pm at the Cope Auditorium, the Loughborough Orchestra presents an evening packed full of dramatic moments from stage and screen. There is music for every taste and emotion! With a little imagination, the orchestra will take you on a journey through the heroics of Gladiator, across the wide plains of The Big Country and on to the bustling life of Paris in the mid 20th Century. You can travel to a fantasy time with dinosaurs reappearing to terrorise the earth or to the Land of Oz and the tales of its two most famous witches. Then there is a little fantasy woven around the life of Mozart (but no fantasy about the elegance of his Flute and Harp Concerto) And how could there be a selection of such drama without some deep emotions such as those found in West Side Story? With music from composers as diverse and expert as Gershwin, Tchaikovsky, Bernstein, Lloyd Webber and the “big daddy” of film music, John Williams, this promises to be a great evening. Tickets are available at £7.00, Concession £6.00 and Children £1.00, from secretary@ loughboroughorchestra.org.uk or from any member of the orchestra. Following exceptional demand for tickets at the last concert, it is recommended to obtain a ticket in advance to avoid disappointment. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace
the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer
requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Shepshed & the surrounding area and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I
get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

THE FRIENDS OF CHARNWOOD FOREST VISIT TO CHARNWOOD LODGE NATURE RESERVE Wednesday 10th June 2015 at 10.00am Neil Pilcher, Senior Conservation Officer, Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust will be leading a walk around Charnwood Lodge on Wednesday 10th June. We will meet at the Bomb Rocks at 10.00 am (see map). The area covered by the reserve was originally part of Charnwood Forest wastes and the now familiar stone walls were erected during the enclosure period of the 19th Century. Among the most striking features are the prominent 600 million year old Precambrian rock outcrops which protrude through the surrounding marl. These outcrops include the famous “Bomb” rocks which attract attention from geologists nationwide and have led to the reserve being declared a National Nature Reserve.
SUNSET BOULEVARD AT LOUGHBOROUGH TOWN HALL IN SEPTEMBER No sooner has the applause died down from their sell-out success of Hairspray, than Loughborough theatre company the ESNA Players are announcing news of another local premiere for the town - Sunset Boulevard. Sunset Boulevard is a huge hit with fans of classic cinema thanks to Billy Wilder's memorable 1950s film starring Gloria Swanson and William Holden.
The reserve extends to 193.5 hectares (480 acres) and most of it is a Site of Special Scientific Interest in addition to the above. The large tracts of heath grassland are dotted with small areas of bilberry, while marshes and boggy pools harbour a wide variety of species, some of them true relics of the ancient Charnwood landscape such as bog pimpernel, marsh violet, lesser skullcap, creeping willow and climbing corydalis. We will be fortunate to find them all. It is the only site in Leicestershire for petty-whin and we should find some orchids. An area known as The Rough is a good location for ground nesting birds, such as meadow pipet, linnet, reed bunting and skylark. The group will need to be limited to 25. If it is oversubscribed then I will try to arrange an additional date. Please note NO DOGS. Charnwood Lodge remains one of the last truly wild areas of the Forest. If you wish to join the visit please contact Toby Manning, toby.manning@dsi.pipex.com or 01530245298.The group will be selected on a first come basis. You will be notified if you are not included in the initial group. This will be a most interesting visit, hope to see you there.
She hires a young screenwriter Joe Gillis to draw into her fantasy world and help set up her movie comeback. Gillis believes he can manipulate her, but he soon finds out he is wrong. The screenwriter's ambivalence about their relationship and her unwillingness to let go leads to a situation of violence, madness, and death.
And now, ESNA are bringing the stage version to Loughborough Town Hall for the first time.
With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, the show first opened in London in 1993 and has had several long runs internationally and also enjoyed extensive tours.
Sunset Boulevard focuses on aging silent film queen Norma Desmond, who refuses to accept that her stardom has ended.
It also swept the board at the 1995 Tony Awards, winning seven awards including Best Musical and Best Original Score.

Creating Wildlife Gardens
A
garden isn’t a garden without wildlife. We rely on them for pollination, pest control, providing a food source for other creatures and as a bonus they add colour, movement and sound to our outdoor spaces too. So if we can incorporate wildlife friendly features and plants into our gardens we will all benefit hugely.
Echinops Thistle
Log Piles
I’m busy working on a design plan for a wildlife garden at the moment, including features and planting to encourage wildlife to frequent the garden. So what are the essentials for this type of garden?
diversity. Be sure to top up the water in the summer months. Bug boxes are made up of materials like bamboo canes, sticks and cones to provide nooks and crannies as snug, safe places for insects to hibernate. They are especially good our natural pest exterminators - lacewings and ladybirds. Solitary bees also hibernate in the hollow tubes of the bamboo. Bug boxes are available to buy easily or they can be made simply from scraps of wood and garden twigs.
Ponds are great habitats for Frogs, toads and newts. Damselflies, dragonflies, pond skaters, snails and water beetles all breed in water and for those with space for a large pond, they may even see swallows and house martins gathering insects from the water surface and using muddy areas for nest building.
Hedgehog habitats like piles of logs & leaves, a compost heap or space beneath a shed will provide shelter and space for nesting or hibernating hogs. Encouraging them into your garden will help with pest control as they love to munch on slugs, beetles and caterpillars. I love to hear them snuffling around on a summers evening.
Ponds can be large or small; it’s possible to convert decorative pots, old sinks, troughs and even old baths into a pond once the drainage holes have been sealed. Pots with a minimum water depth of 20-30cm (8-12in) will allow a few plants to be added.
Log Piles made up of a mixture of logs and twigs from various plants they provide homes for creepy crawlies and a food source for plenty of wildlife. Simulating a natural woodland floor, they’re best placed in a shady spot, so that it remains cool and damp.
For larger spaces natural style ponds can be created with shallow sides to allow frogs easy access & to allow birds to drink safely. Aim for some foliage around the edges for wildlife to shelter and to encourage greater
Plants which are nectar and seed rich will attract a wealth of bees, butterflies, insects and birds throughout the year. Daisies like Echinacea, Rudbeckia and Leucanthemum, act as landing pads for bees and butterflies,
drawing them in to gather nectar and pollinate the blooms. Thistlelike perennials like Eryngium, Echinops and Teasels offer a valuable food source for birds in the autumn-winter months. Native wildflowers will bring a whole host of wildlife into the garden. Choose those which are not invasive like Wild Primrose and Violets which flower in early spring when there is little else about. Berrying & fruiting shrubs and trees like Rowan, Pyracantha and Crab Apple offer an easy food source for birds and insects from late summer onwards. Leave fallen fruit for insects, decomposing bacteria and fungi to scavenge from in the autumn-winter. Bird Feeders are essential if you want to attract more birds to the garden. There’s a huge range of bird food to choose from to attract finches, Tits, Sparrows & Robins. Ensure they are kept clean to keep the birds healthy and regularly top them up to keep a steady stream of feathered friends calling. The tropical look more your thing? Next month I’ll be looking at how to add plants to give an exotic flavour to your outdoor space. If you fancy a wildlife garden or border revamp and need some further help, get in touch.

NICKY MORGAN
I
would like to say a massive thank you for re-electing me as your Member of Parliament. It is a huge honour to represent everyone in Shepshed, and I will continue to work hard for all constituents and be your voice in Westminster. I would also like to congratulate your four borough councillors, Christine Radford, Joan Tassell, Bill Bebbington and John Savage and your town councillors on their elections or re-elections too.
I have been clear that I see education as a matter of social justice. Every child is entitled to a place at a good local school which will give them the best start in life. I want to see this become even more of a reality by the end of this Parliament. Since 2010 we have a million more pupils in schools rated good or outstanding but we need to go further and ensure that we have excellent schools and excellent teachers in all parts of our country.
I have been overwhelmed by the hundreds of messages of support from local residents. Please do contact me or my team if you are in need of assistance – my contact details are on this page.
Finally we will be a “One Nation” Government that will act in the interests of the whole country. This means ensuring the economic recovery reaches all part of our country, from north to south, from east to west and it means continuing to rebalance our economy.
During April I had the honour of opening the new play area at Oxley Primary School. It has been a pleasure to visit the school in recent months and meet the staff and pupils. I know that the new play equipment would not have been possible without the support of parents and families of the pupils and also the pupils themselves who helped to design the area. I am certain the equipment is already being well used. MPs have now returned to Westminster and as a Government we are clear that our task is to spend the next five years fulfilling the commitments set out in our manifesto. We have three main principles to follow over the course of this Parliament. Firstly, we are putting working people front and centre of the new Government’s mission. This will mean introducing legislation within weeks to reform welfare, offer more apprenticeships, create two million jobs and help working parents with childcare costs. And for those who can’t work we will ensure they have the support they need at every stage of their lives. Secondly we will be very clear that in areas such as education we will govern with compassion and with a focus on social justice. I am delighted to have been reappointed as Secretary of State for Education as well as Minister for Women and Equalities by the Prime Minister.
Governing for the whole country also means bringing together the different nations of our United Kingdom. The Prime Minister has said that he wants to govern with respect and we will implement as fast as we can the devolution that all parties agreed for Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. I know from my many conversations with Shepshed residents that there are many local issues you would like me and your councillors to focus on. This includes planning, traffic, securing investment for Shepshed, supporting local businesses, continuing to work on a bus link between Shepshed and East Midlands Airport and supporting fantastic local organisations such as Steps. I believe the next five years will be very exciting for Shepshed, Leicestershire and the East Midlands. In the last Parliament we had to focus on recovery and repair and now as a country we can build on that and focus on renewal. I look forward to seeing many of you at the forthcoming Shepshed Show which I am sure will be excellent as always.

COUNTY COUNCIL MEETING
GOVERNMENT BOUNDARY COMMISSION - a brief report
– at the County Council Meeting held on 25th March when the Leader of the Council, Cllr, Nick Rushton, paid tribute to everybody involved with the events leading up to the reinternment of Richard 111, starting with the event on Sunday at Bosworth Battlefield. I am sure everybody who has followed the events has been moved by them. Leicester and Leicestershire will have to make sure that they capitalise on the legacy.
by the Constitution Committee was given regarding boundary changes due to come in to effect April 2016. The need to secure equality of representation (approx. 9-10,000 residents) and the need to reflect the identities and interests of local communities. Currently more than 30% of council’s wards/divisions have an electoral imbalance of more than 10%. Some have an imbalance of more than 30%.
The Leader went on to report that progress continues to be made in securing funding support for local businesses and the creation of jobs. He went on to say that he had signed the Growth Deal which secures much-needed funding to regenerate Melton cattle Market, improve the Midland Mainline and work is well underway to construct the Advanced Technology Innovation Centre at Loughborough University and that the MIRA Technology Enterprise Zone is to be extended.
All three main political parties agreed that the current council size met the needs of the authority which is currently 55 members.
Leicestershire is set to see two significant changes in its rail network. An announcement is due this year from the Government on HS2 and the Midland Mainline is due to be electrified in the next 5years or so.
– Together with Nicky Morgan MP we had a meeting with East Midlands Airport and presented a petition supporting our request to have a bus ink between Shepshed and East Midlands Airport. This link could be via Loughborough or via Coalville. This followed repeated request from residents who wished to apply for jobs at the airport but were finding it difficult to get there due to the lack of public transport. Jobs at the airport are mostly shift work. The Airport is fully supportive of our request and we now need to approach the bus companies, County, Charnwood and Northwest Leicestershire to support this request. I would like to thank everybody who has supported us by signing the petition.
CHILDREN AND FAMILY SERVICES – the Lead Member
for Children and Family Services made a statement regarding the arrangements that have been put in place to create a multi-agency team, working with the Police and health partners, to respond to the increasingly prevalent area of child protection. As part of these new arrangements an all-Member Child Protection Panel was set up to provide assurance that the County Council is discharging its duties in relation to child protection. However we need to acknowledge that there are examples of child sexual exploitation, commonly referred to as CSE, in the county and these are being swiftly responded to, perpetrators are being investigated and
In May the Government Boundary Commission will be going out for consultation. Currently Shepshed has over 11,000 residents, I will be writing in support of Shepshed staying as one division and not having a small part of it hived off, moving into Loughborough or Hathern.

Put it in your diary, June 20, 2015 at Shepshed High School, 11am-4pm! It's the return of the Shepshed Show in association with the Nottingham Building Society, our main sponsor. The Show’s Committee Members have been working very hard to ensure that this year’s Show has new things to offer as well as the usual family favourites. The Shepshed Show is a fun filled day out with so much to do, all at affordable prices. The event is generously sponsored by local businesses that support the day, enabling the committee to offer so much without having to charge large entrance fees. This year’s star attraction is the UK’s Top Ranked Freestyle Motocross Team – Broke FMX sponsored by Farmer and Carlisle of Loughborough. The show features stunt riders incorporating the latest heart stopping tricks usually only seen on TV. Returning this year is the Fun Dog Show, sponsored by the Loughborough Building Society and organised by Helping Hathern Dogs. You can find the categories and an entrance form on our website www.

“We are thrilled to see such exciting new things this year. HELP LIZ TO FUND RAISE FOR EPILEPSY ACTION I've known my friend Caroline since I was five years old and as long standing friends do, we've shared some highs and lows throughout our time together. So, in November 2003, when I found myself holding Caroline's second daughter, a beautiful little girl, Eloise, when she was just a day or so old, who knew that in just over a few weeks her life, Caroline's and the rest of her family's life would never be the same again; as at just 2 and a half weeks old Eloise began to have seizures and soon Caroline began to hear words such as Tonic Clonic and Myoclonic seizures as a result of Cortisol Dysplasia leading to Epilepsy. It was clear that her condition was serious, life threatening and that tiny Ellie would
require surgery which in itself would have a major impact on her life. Eloise was having over 100 seizures a day and at 3 months old went through a 13 hour operation called a partial haemispherectomy of the right front lobe of her brain. Again her seizures began to increase to around 100 a day and she faced more surgery at 6 months old. The effects were as if she had a stroke, with weakness along the left side of her body. Caroline gave her physiotherapy every day but the effects of her Epilepsy are far reaching, she cannot speak, cannot step far and is doubly incontinent and developmentally delayed, She needs a lot of help, but she always tries to help....Eloise loves to be socially included, loving school, music and has a wicked sense of humour.
Despite this Eloise is a brave little girl, facing surgery and hospital visits again and again and with the help of her family Eloise has been able to walk. She still has seizures, just one or two a night, lasting seconds instead of hours. Caroline now a single mum working in a Special Needs School works hard to ensure Eloise (and her other daughter Yasmin) has a happy life just like any 12 year old. When I held tiny Ellie all those years ago I had little understanding of how devastating Epilepsy could be, that's why when another long time friend suggested a group
of us give something back by taking part in Trek Fest I knew which charity I wanted to raise money and awareness for, Epilepsy Action.

MEN IN SHEDS (CHARNWOOD)
LOROS - THE ROYAL ASCOT LADIES DAY EXPERIENCE
A place of leisure where men come together to work
A Men's Shed is a larger version of the typical man’s shed – a place where he feels at home and pursues practical interests with a high degree of autonomy. They are places of skill-sharing and informal learning, of individual pursuits and community projects, of purpose, achievement and social interaction. Suggested projects include activities as varied as: • woodworking (e.g. carpentry, joinery, turning, carving, whittling, marquetry, furniture renovation, picture frames, garden furniture, bird boxes, Xmas/Easter ornaments) • electronics • bike repair • arts/crafts (painting, calligraphy, pottery) • gardening • upholstery • music (singing/playing instruments) • sports/Leisure - pool, skittles, carpet bowls, darts, dominoes, cards • model trains, boats, planes, cars etc. • IT/communication - computers, languages
Have you always wanted to experience The Royal Ascot but have been put off by the long journey? Thanks to LOROS Hospice, now you have the chance to enjoy this year’s Ladies Day, right here in Leicester.
But there must be more - make a suggestion and we’ll try to help… Reclamation, reuse and restoration will feature strongly – and some say that is true of the men too! Whichever activities are pursued the essence of a Shed is not the building, but the network of relationships between the members. Age UK Leicestershire and Rutland are pleased to announce that the Charnwood Shed is now open in Loughborough. For more details, ring 01509 211603, or Email MeninSheds@ageukleics.org.uk or visit www.ageukleics.org.uk.
The Royal Ascot Ladies Day Experience will take place at Leicester Racecourse, on Thursday 18th June, on the same day as the main event itself. There will be live screening of the races via giant plasma screens, a glass of fizz on arrival and a four course lunch, as well as the chance to bag yourself a few new purchases at a variety of pop-up shops. LOROS fundraiser Laura Betts said “There’s a huge demand for this type of event, which brings The Royal Ascot experience to your doorstep. We’re all really looking forward to the day and can’t wait to see some of the local ladies glammed up for a day at the races. So dig out your best frocks girls, because this is an event you don’t want to miss.”
The day will also include live entertainment, an award for ‘best dressed’ and a super car display. Leicester Racecourse director Rob Bracken, said “The team at Leicester Racecourse are delighted to be working with LOROS this year. “We are extremely proud to be associated with the charity that is celebrating 30 years of caring for our community.” This is one of many LOROS event taking place in what is a jam-packed year celebrating the Hospice’s 30 year anniversary. Tickets are available at £59 each or £500 for a table of 10. The ticket price also includes entry to the live horse races, which are due to start at 6pm.

BETHANY AND FRIENDS DONATE TO CHARITY
The two friends had a laugh about the amount of clothes and trinkets they had and how they hated to throw things away.
Summer had almost arrived and Bethany was emptying her house ready to give it a good clean, one by one she moved everything out into the garden so she could wipe down the walls, mop the floors and polish the windows till they sparkled.
Daniel Dog was walking past on his afternoon stroll when he heard the laughing, “What’s going on here then?” He said “Someone moving house?!”
She hopped out with a basket of hats and scarves then back in again, then she hopped out with a box of baking trays, then back in again. This went on for quite some time! Christie cat had heard the rattling of boxes and popped her head over the wall to find out what was going on. She could barely see Bethany over the huge pile of boxes!
Christie and Bethany explained what was going on and why they were laughing. “You don’t need to throw things you don’t use anymore away, have you considered donating it to charity?”
Bethany was just coming out of the house with another basket of hats when Christie asked her what she was doing. “I’m emptying my house so I can clean it,” Said Bethany “But I didn’t realise I had so much stuff! I don’t remember buying most of it and I’m sure I haven’t worn half of these hats!” Christie replied “It’s good to empty rooms out sometimes, I really need to do my house. I always find things I forgot I had or that I don’t use and are just taking up space”. “I don’t think it will all fit back in!” Joked Bethany. “I’m sure this can’t all me mine!”

Daniel went on to explain that there were many charity shops in the town who needed second hand clothes and trinkets. He explained that they sell them to help raise money for good causes. Bethany though that this was a brilliant idea and so once she had finished cleaning, Christie and Daniel helped her to sort out what she wanted to keep and what she wanted to donate. The following day the friends all took Bethany’s donations to the local charity shop who were very happy to receive them. Bethany felt very happy to have made a difference to others by giving away things she didn’t want any more. Well done Bethany, giving to charity is a very kind thing to do. Can you think of anything you don’t use any more, or any clothes you have grown out of that you could donate? Why not ask your parents to help you sort your bedroom out and take some items down to a charity shop?

HEALTH & WELLBEING
I WISH I’D LOOKED AFTER MY FEET! Oh, I wish I‘d looked after my feet! My nails are all tough and they’ve just had enough They’re all thick and yellow, poke though socks to say ‘hello’ I’m afraid they have just got me beat! How I wish I’d looked after my feet. Oh, I wish I’d looked after my feet! All the years of tight fashion have given a bashing My corns are a throbbing, I can’t do the shopping And I now have to carry a seat! If I’d only looked after my feet Oh, I wish I’d looked after my feet! My toe nails are in-growing, pointed shoes I’m a throwing! They were always too tight but I looked such a sight In sensible shoes, like a geek!! But, I wish I’d looked after my feet! Oh, I wish I’d looked after my feet! This fungus is spreading, my skin is all shedding The faint odour of cheese, it does nothing to please And I’m sweating so much with the heat Oh I wish I’d looked after my feet! Oh, I wish I’d looked after my feet! My nails they’re a crumbling, I can’t help a grumbling They’re unsightly in sandals, just like my love handles Oh! to be sexy and neat! I just wish I’d looked after my feet! Oh I wish I’d looked after my feet! My heels are all cracking; I’ve tried rubbing and hacking They’re split and unsightly, not good in my nighty How often must I know defeat? Why didn’t I look after my feet? Oh I wish I’d looked after my feet! Is there help to be smooth, and pain free as in youth? Stop this muttering and cursing; find a ‘Foot Health Care Person’ There’ll be one who lives just down the street! And they will look after my feet!! I think I’ll look after my feet! With some cutting and filing, I could just be smiling Some probing and digging and I could be out gigging And you never know who I might meet!! So, I think I’ll look after my feet!! EYES ON THE WORLD Newborn babies can see shapes and light, with close-range focus enabling them to recognise their mother’s face within days. The ability to coordinate both eyes develops throughout the first eight weeks, although a lot of sight-related progress involves simultaneous brain development. Colours become increasingly distinct during the first few months of life, while a six-month old baby will be gaining depth perception that tracks objects as they move closer or further away from them. Light sensitivity also improves. By nine months, long-distance vision will be approaching its full potential in preparation for reading and playing. Crawling is invaluable for establishing hand-to-eye coordination, and it’s better than walking in terms of developing visual skills. If you have any concerns regarding a baby’s eyes we will be happy to discuss this with you and if necessary arrange for an early check-up to ensure both eyes are developing normally Did you know? Newborn babies can’t identify colours because their retinal cells aren’t fully developed, but they can see highcontrast patterns like black and white stripes. If your baby does need to wear glasses we supply the Miraflex range of baby frames. Recommended by hospitals and orthoptists, they have been
designed for babies and children aged from approx 3 month to 8 years. They are manufactured from a unique lightweight and flexible plastic material to permit excellent wearing comfort and optimum adjustment, with no metal parts and hinge-free temples, drastically reducing the risk of facial and eye trauma. The nose bridge is anatomically designed to distribute the weight of the frame and lenses across a larger surface to further increase wearing comfort. A special adjustable and electronically welded head band keeps the frame snugly in place to improve optical correction and occlusion treatment. Great for babies and toddlers engaging in play and sports activities. The Flexible & Safe collection consists of 11 models and is available in more than 20 colours. Frames are supplied with a headband and case. VOLUNTEERING Do you enjoy meeting and engaging with people? Do you have time on your hands? We are always looking for help with the museum, the public cannot access the upper rooms unless a volunteer is present so the volunteer Museum Guide’s role is vital. Do not worry that you know little about military memorabilia you will be amazed how quickly you begin to sound like expert on the subject and to start you will be paired up with an experience guide. Even if you cannot commit to a regular slot you might be able to help us out covering absences, holidays, sickness etc. Email us!
MODEL MAKER STILL WANTED In the April Edition of the Carillon Chimes newsletter I asked if anyone could make 1:144 scale models of houses, Rows of terraced houses preferred. They are for a display to commemorate the Zeppelin raid to be held at the Charnwood Museum during January 2015. We already have a 1:144 model Zeppelin and some figures, just need the buildings to give a sense of size. Absolutely no response! So I am asking again. 1:144 is (I believe) the equivalent to ‘N’ gauge in the model railway world, no model railwayers out there?
